A bit about me: I have partly earned my living over more than 50 years both as a storyteller and storywriter, working as a storyteller in 55 countries, mainly in schools but also in cafes and in the street, and as a storywriter for West German Television, the BBC and ITV, Oxford University Press and EJ Arnold.  My latest book of short stories, Beggar in Bogota, privately published, is being translated into Russian by the Boris Pasternak Museum in Moscow, and I gave a webinar for the Museum on September 16, 2017.  As well as telling and writing stories, I illustrate them.  (My first love and first training was in Fine Art.) A bit about my stories: My stories are mainly from my own experience, reflecting my own life and work, whether in England, my birthplace, or in Hungary, my present home or from the many other countries in which I have worked.  Most of my drive to write stories is to record the blend of the universal and the unique that is to be found in whatever we do, wherever and whoever we are.  My stories are short, some are just moments. I revel in the ubiquity of the values and concerns we share, I also revel in our utter idiosyncrasy. During my story evening, I propose to tell a good variety of stories and talk about them, hoping that you will find them engaging.  At the same time, I hope my choice of stories will remind you of the many, many experiences you have had yourselves of individuals living out their lives.

Erasmus+ K1 Mobility Projekt

Az I.L.I. Kft sikeresen befejezte a kétéves Erasmus+ K1 Mobility EU-s finanszírozású szakmai projektjét, amely keretén belül modern IKT alkalmazások és hátrányos helyzetűek oktatására vonatkozó szakmai fejlesztéseket végeztünk. A résztvevők külföldi képzéseken vettek részt 2014.07.27-2016.05.13. között, valamint 3 résztvevő a temesvári Babel Center nyelviskolai partnerünknél sikeres Best Practice tapasztalatcsere intézménylátogatást tett 2016.szeptember 7-11-ig, Dudás Julianna, I.L.I. Kft szakmai és projekt vezető részt az IATEFL 50. nemzetközi szakmai konferenciáján Birminghamben, ahol sok új nemzetközi kapcsolatot épített ki és új ismeretekkel gazdagodva tért haza.

A résztvevők IKT képességeket és a kooperatív tanulási technikákat sajátítottak el a projekt során, és adtak tovább kollégáiknak, építették be tanfolyamaikba. Prezentációs és tananyagfejlesztő készségeik nagymértékben magabiztosabbá váltak. Olyan módszertani ismereteket sajátítottak el, melyeket a későbbiekben a felnőttoktatás területén, céges és lakossági tanfolyamokon fognak tudni hasznosítani. A megismert módszerekkel motiválhatják hallgatóikat, színessé, élvezetesebbé tehetik óráikat. 

A projekt résztvevői olyan ismeretekkel is gazdagodtak, amelyekkel a sajátos nevelési igényű tanulók képzését segíthetik. Megismerhették például egy olyan intézet (Graz: Atempo) működését, amely a sajátos nevelési igényű fiataloknak a munkába való beilleszkedésének segítését tűzte ki célul. Nagy örömöt jelentett továbbá, hogy a projekttagoknak alkalmuk volt találkozni az Autizmus Alapítvány szakembereivel, ahol tapasztalatot cserélhettek, illetve bemutathatták  a mobilitási projekt keretében megismert technikákat és alkalmazásokat.

A finn oktatási rendszerről, egy nyitott, innovatív oktatási rendszerről alkotott tudás a projekttagokat érdeklődő, a világ oktatási rendszerei iránt fogékony emberré tette. A projekt során külföldi kollégáikkal megismerkedtek, tapasztalatot cseréltek, hasznos módszereket tanultak. A projekt hatással volt szakmai önérzetükre, magabiztosságukra és a nyelvtanítás iránti lelkesedésükre. Olyan személyes képességeik és tulajdonságaik is fejlődtek, mint önállóság, problémamegoldás, határozottság, szorgalom, szervezőkészség, kezdeményezőkészség, kreativitás, elkötelezettség, kapcsolatteremtő és kommunikációs készség, pontosság és megbízhatóság. Mindezen készségek a nyelviskolában végzett további munkájukban fontos kompetenciákat jelentenek. A projekt során megszerzett gyakorlati és elméleti ismereteket, személyes kompetenciákat az intézményben végzett nyelvoktatói munkájukban a jövőben is alkalmazhatják, és átadhatják. 

A képzéseken szerzett szakmai és interkulturális ismereteket, tudásanyagot a projektben részvevők hazaérkezésük után folyamatosan elkezdték beépíteni intézményi munkájukba és széleskörű disszeminációs tevékenységet folytattak a projekt során intézményen belül-kívül, (tanártovábbképzések az ILI Nyelviskolában, BESIG konferencia, Nemzetközi Posztgraduális Üzleti Angol Tanárképző kurzus, IATEFL konferencia, IATEFL Creative Cafe, NYESZE konferencia, Gödöllő-Szent István Egyetem). A projekt végén nemzeti szintű ILI-Erasmus+Mobilitás projektzáró napot szerveztek, amelyen a projekt eredményeit, sikereit és a megszerzett ismereteket osztották meg a résztvevőkkel, és a pozitív eredmények átadása mellett a jelenlevőket jövőbeli Erasmus+ projektekben indulásra buzdították.

Jelenleg coaching-stílusú nyelvi képzéseket, tréningeket tart közép-és felsővezetők részére.

Olyan nyelvtanárok képzését is végzi, akik hátrányos helyzetű tanulókat oktatnak.  Például a TÁMOP 2.1.2 keretében, melynek célja az is volt, hogy a hátrányos helyzetű kistérségek lakóit felzárkóztassa idegen nyelvi készségeik, kompetenciájuk fejlesztésével. Körülbelül 800 embernek tartottunk az I.L.I. nyelviskolai szekcióján keresztül képzéseket 560 órában országosan, közöttük a legtöbb hátrányos helyzetű település volt. Ezért folyamatosan keresi az új eszközöket, módszereket, melyekkel újabb motivációs lökést adhat ezeknek a tanulóknak. Többek között ezért is érdeklődik a modern IKT eszközök alkalmazása iránt. Az I.L.I. Erasmus+ K1 Mobility projekt vezetője és fő koordinátora, a projekt keretében 2015. augusztusában részt vett az ICI –InterCultural Iceland Intézet- által, Izlandon, szervezett „Reaching, Teaching and Keeping Learners” című kurzuson, melynek elvégzésével felkészültebb és magabiztosabb lett a kooperatív módszerek alkalmazása területén.

When Did Everything Become a ‘Journey’?

Changing our hair, getting divorced, taking spa vacations — they’re not just things we do; they’re “journeys.” The quest for better health is the greatest journey of all.

Drew Barrymore has been talking with Gayle King about her perimenopause “journey ,” and the soccer phenom Carli Lloyd has just divulged her fertility “journey .” By sharing her breast cancer story, Olivia Munn has said she hopes she will “help others find comfort, inspiration, and support on their own journey.” A recent interview with Anne Hathaway has been posted on Instagram with a headline highlighting her “ sobriety journey ,” and Kelly Clarkson has opened up about what Women’s Health calls her “ weight loss journey .” On TikTok, a zillion influencer-guides lead pilgrims on journeys through such ephemeral realms as faith, healing, grief, friendship, mastectomy, and therapy — often selling courses, supplements or eating plans as if they were talismans to help safeguard their path.

“Journey” has decisively taken its place in American speech. The word holds an upbeat utility these days, signaling struggle without darkness or detail, and expressing — in the broadest possible way — an individual’s experience of travails over time.

It’s often related to physical or mental health, but it can really be about anything: “Putting on your socks can be a journey of self-discovery,” said Beth Patton, who lives in Central Indiana and has relapsing polychondritis, an inflammatory disorder. In the chronic disease community, she said, “journey” is a debated word. “It’s a way to romanticize ordinary or unpleasant experiences, like, ‘Oh, this is something special and magical.’” Not everyone appreciates this, she said.

According to the linguistics professor Jesse Egbert at Northern Arizona University, the use of “journey” (the noun) has nearly doubled in American English since 1990, with the most frequent instances occurring online. Mining a new database of conversational American English he and colleagues are building, Egbert could show exactly how colloquial “journey” has become: One woman in Pennsylvania described her “journey to become a morning person,” while another, in Massachusetts, said she was “on a journey of trying to like fish.”

Egbert was able to further demonstrate how the word itself has undergone a transformative journey — what linguists call “semantic drift.” It wasn’t so long ago that Americans mostly used “journey” to mean a literal trip, whereas now it’s more popular as a metaphor. Egbert demonstrated this by searching the more than one billion words in a database called COCA for the nouns people put before “journey” to clarify what sort they’re on. Between 1990 and 2005, the most common modifier was “return,” followed by words like “ocean,” “train,” “mile,” “night,” “overland,” and “bus.”

But between 2006 and 2019, usage shifted. “Return” remains the most common noun modifier to journey, but now it’s followed closely by “faith,” “cancer,” and “life.” Among the top 25 nouns used to modify “journey” today are: “soul,” “adoption,” and “hair.”

In almost every language, “journey” has become a way to talk abstractly about outcomes, for good reason: According to what linguists call the “primary metaphor theory,” humans learn as babies crawling toward their toys that “‘purpose’ and ‘destination’ coincide,” said Elena Semino, a linguist at Lancaster University who specializes in metaphor. As we become able to accomplish our goals while sitting still (standardized tests! working from home!), ambition and travel diverge. Yet we continue to envision achievement as a matter of forward progress. This is why we say, “‘I know what I want, but I don’t know how to get there,’” Semino explained. “Or ‘I’m at a crossroads.’”

So it’s not surprising, perhaps, that as Americans started seeing good health as a desirable goal, achievable through their own actions and choices — and marketers encouraged these pursuits and commodified them — the words “journey” and “health” became inextricably linked. In 1898, C.W. Post wrote a pamphlet he called “The Road to Wellville,” which he attached to each box of his new product, Grape-Nuts. In 1926, the Postum Cereal Company republished the pamphlet as a small book , now with the subtitle, “A Personally Conducted Journey to the Land of Good Health by the Route of Right Living.”

The language (and business) of self-help so completely saturates culture, “it gets kind of hard to trace where a word started and where it came from,” said Jessica Lamb-Shapiro, author of “Promise Land: My Journey Through America’s Self-Help Culture.” Americans like to put an optimistic, brave spin on suffering, and “journey” seeped in because, Lamb-Shapiro speculated, it’s bland enough to “tackle really difficult things,” yet positive enough to “make them palatable and tolerable.”

“Journey” had fully entered medical speak by the 2010s. Many cancer patients recoiled from the “battle” language traditionally used by doctors, as well as by friends and relatives. In “Illness as Metaphor,” Susan Sontag had noted back in 1978 that “every physician and every attentive patient is familiar with, if perhaps inured to, this military terminology.” But now, opposition to the notion of disease as an enemy combatant reached a crescendo. To reflexively call an experience of cancer a battle created “winners” and “losers,” where death or long suffering represented a failure — of will, strength, determination, diet, behavior, or outlook — on the part of the patient.

Many patients “detest” the military metaphor, Robert Miller conceded in Oncology Times in 2010. Knowing this, Miller, then a breast cancer oncologist affiliated with Johns Hopkins, said he struggled to find the right words in composing a condolence note to a patient’s spouse. “I welcome suggestions,” he wrote.

“Journey” seemed less judgmental, more neutral. In Britain, the National Health Service had started to almost exclusively use “journey” language in reference to cancer (treatments were “pathways”). Semino, the metaphor expert whose father had died of cancer at a time when patients’ diagnoses were hidden from them, wanted to examine how patients talked about it — and whether that language caused them harm. In a research paper Semino published with colleagues in 2015, she looked at how patients talked about their cancer on forums online and found that they still used “battle” as often as they did “journey,” and that “journey” could be disempowering, as well.

For some people, talking about cancer as a “journey” gave them a sense of control and camaraderie — buddies traveling the same path — but others used the term to convey their exhaustion. Having cancer “is like trying to drive a coach and horses uphill with no back wheels on the coach,” one man wrote. Patients used “journey” to describe just how passive they felt or how reluctant to bear the burden of their disease. Separately, patients have told Semino how much they hate the word “journey,” saying it trivializes their experience, that it’s clichéd.

But it was too late: The metaphor already was everywhere. In 2014, Anna Wintour was asked which word she would like to banish from the fashion lexicon and she said, “journey.” The following year, Yolanda Foster, the mother of Gigi and Bella Hadid, told People magazine that while she was on her Lyme disease journey, two of her children were afflicted, too. Medical journals and government publications began describing insomnia , the effort to achieve health-care reform , diabetes , and the development of RSV vaccines as a journey. The term “healing journey,” in use since at least the mid-2010s, blew up around 2021. The phrase in news media referenced the experience of cancer , celebrity weight loss , trafficking of Indigenous children , Sean Combs’s creative process , spa vacations , amputation , and better sex .

On the Reddit channel Chronic Illness, one poster eloquently fumed that persistent sickness is not a journey. “It’s endless, pointless and repetitive. There’s no new ground to gain here.” The cultural insistence on illness as a journey, from which a traveler can learn useful, or even life-changing lessons, becomes something to “disassociate from, survive, endure.” It “causes social isolation.”

Although she concedes its downsides, Stephanie Swanson likes to think of herself as on a journey. Swanson, who is 37 and lives in Kansas City, was an engineer by training, with three young children, a career and a sideline as an aerialist, when she got long Covid in the summer of 2022. The things that had made her successful — her physical stamina, her ability to solve problems — evaporated. “I’ve had to give up my career, my hobbies, my physical abilities,” she said. “I’ve gained 30 pounds on my tiny dancer body. I’m doing the best I can with what I have.”

Swanson makes a distinction between “journey” and “trip”: The latter is circumscribed by a start, an end, and hotel and restaurant reservations along the way. She sees “journey” as a way to capture the arc of a whole life.

When she was running operations at a medical center at the University of Kansas, she always imagined slowing down to enjoy her kids more or to read a book, but “I felt like my head was going to explode.” Now Swanson has become a person who must rent a wheelchair for her upcoming trip to New York City, and she likes how “journey” accommodates all the challenging, unexpected circumstances she confronts. “To me, the word ‘journey’ resonates with choosing to be on a path of acceptance but not standing still,” she said. “I’m not giving up, but recognizing that this is the path I’m on.”

Ramani Durvasula uses “journey” advisedly. A clinical psychologist in Los Angeles who treats women in emotionally abusive relationships, she recognizes how “journey” has been “eye-rollingly cheapened” and has started to experiment with alternatives. She’s tried “process.” She’s tried “healing trajectory.” But she falls back on journey, because it, more than any other word, expresses the step-by-step, sometimes circular or backward nature of enduring something hard. “Arguably, a journey doesn’t have a destination,” she said. “Have you ever taken a hike in a loop? And you end up exactly where you parked your car?”

But Durvasula does object to the easy-breezy healing so many journey hashtags promote, what she calls the “post-sobriety, post-weight-loss, now-I’m-in-love-again-after-my-toxic-relationship” reels. Too many TikToks show the crying in the car then the cute party dress, skipping over the middle, when people feel ugly, angry, self-loathing, and hopeless. “I want to see the hell,” she said. “I want to see the nightmare.”

When in 2020 a Swedish linguist named Charlotte Hommerberg studied how advanced cancer patients describe their experience, she found they used “battle” and “journey,” like everyone else. But most also used a third metaphor that conveyed not progress, fight or hope. They said cancer was like “imprisonment,” a feeling of being stuck — like a “free bird in a cage,” one person wrote. Powerless and going nowhere.

TikToker who documented journey with metastatic sarcoma dies at 31, released final video saying 'I've passed away'

TikToker Kimberley Nix, who documented her three year journey with metastatic sarcoma, has died at the age of 31.

As a final farewell, Nix published a last video on her TikTok page to her 148,000 followers saying, “If you’re seeing this message, I have passed away peacefully.”

Nix, who worked as a resident doctor, was diagnosed with palliative sarcoma cancer at 28 years old, according to her TikTok account. Since then, she's used the platform to spread awareness on sarcoma cancer, a group of cancers that begin in the bones and in soft tissues, according to the Mayo Clinic .

In her farewell video she said: "I am a resident doctor who trained in internal medical and had a beautiful life and I’m so proud of it. Those who know me know I love my pets, my husband and make up in the reverse over, my husband first and of course all of my family and friends."

"In 2021, I got the opportunity to start making TikTok videos and I never thought that these would become anything. My goal was to spread awareness about sarcoma cancer, and we have been a successful team. We have reached great heights in sarcoma awareness," she explained.

"One of the things that has been the most important for really getting to know you all better has been also sharing my own journey and through my TikTok page, I've shared my journey from the time that my disease was potentially curative ... I've shared about going through six different lines of both experimental and non experimental ... therapies," she said.

"I shared about going through the various challenges of cancer and how we overcame them and I shared about love and joy and gratitude, because in this journey being grateful with people in the little moments, those little parts of your day like that warm first sip of tea in the morning or how it feels when the snow is fresh on your face, are the most beautiful."

She also documented checking items off her bucket list — from her engagement, her wedding, to a dream trip to New York City where she had "a plush stay" that reminded her of the TV show "Gossip Girl" and saw a musical on Broadway.

Nix also enjoyed trips to the mountains, to San Francisco's wine country, and saw some of her favorite artists including Taylor Swift on her Era's Tour, Coldplay and Noah Kahan.

"Through this time my workplace, my husband’s workplace, have been so supportive of us and he’s been able to be off with me a lot of the time. I've had my parents here a lot of the time supporting me and having support is so wonderful," she said.

Nix started to cry when she spoke about her husband.

"My only sadness dying is knowing that we didn’t get to grow old together. Everything else is totally bearable because that is the only thing that really matters," she said.

In her video she said she felt "at peace" with her life and overcome with gratitude for the people in her life, enjoying everyday small moments and with her mission on TikTok.

"If following along as been helpful in any way I have achieved my goal. If sarcoma awareness is achieved, I've achieved my goal," she said.

"This community has meant the absolute world to me. I will miss you TikTok. I love you all," Nix ended her video. "Thank you so much for this amazing opportunity. I’m in happy tears because you’ve all made me find so much purpose in the end of my life."

Nix's husband, Michael MacIsaac, said in a statement on TikTok Wednesday: "My beautiful and selfless wife, my unconditional support and guiding light, and the world's purest soul, passed on today."

He said his wife faced hardship and tragedy with “grace and kindness,” “loved the unloved,” and “healed the ailing” in her life, cut too short.

“I tried to learn all I could, from the biggest inspiration I’ve ever known. Where does all your empathy come from? Your work ethic? Your ability to seize every moment? I didn’t have enough time, but a hundred lifetimes wouldn’t be enough. I’ve no idea how she crammed it all into one, short as it turned out to be,” he said.

“I’m eternally grateful to have been your husband, and am so much better off for having known you. I’m shattered into a billion pieces. I love you Kim,” he concluded his message.

In another message shared Thursday he said: "Yesterday was the worst day of my life, and somehow, thanks to some deeply cherished friends and the connectedness I felt throughout the day, we made it. Today isn’t much better, but I think we’ll make it again too."

MacIsaac said he was "overwhelmed" by the response following his wife's passing.

"You sent me your light and love from every corner of the globe. While that’s easy enough to believe — Kim accomplished the ultimate goal of leaving the world better than she found it — what I can’t believe is how many of you are concerned about me. I’m touched."

'Just give me one chance, it might be my last': RCB's IPL 2024 star breaks down in recalling 'emotional journey'

W hen you look at Royal Challengers Bengaluru 's marvellous comeback in the second half of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, you will hear discussions about Virat Kohli continuing with his red-hot form and finding able assistance from the likes of Will Jacks, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, besides Rajat Patidar controlling the middle-order duties and Dinesh Karthik taking over the responsibility in the slog overs. In the bowling department, Mohammed Siraj will get a mention for making a comeback. But amid the stars, there is one name who will always fly under the radar, despite making significant contributions, mostly as an Impact Player.

It was in 2008, in the inaugural season of IPL, when Swapnil Singh was first picked in the auction, by Mumbai Indians. But it took him 16 years to make his debut in the tournament, when he donned the Lucknow Super Giants cap last season under head coach Andy Flower. With the Zimbabwe legend shifting base to RCB, all Swapnil asked for was "one last chance" when he had met Flower at Bengaluru's pre-season trial camp, saying that it might be his "last".

Speaking to RCB on their official social media handle, the 33-year-old recalled his "emotional journey" in cricket from his debut at the age of 14 for Baroda to being Virat Kohli's roommate on tours during the early days of their career. He later appeared in the IPL auction in 2008, but remained on the bench for MI before being shunted. Eight years later he was picked by the Punjab franchise as well, but failed to make a breakthrough, before returning as a net bowler for LSG, where he pushed his case for a first XI selection. He did make two IPL appearances last year and was confident of being picked in the 2024 auction as well. However, after going unsold initially, he gave up all hope. But he was eventually roped in for his base price of INR 20 lakhs in the accelerated round of the auction.

“The day of the auction, I was travelling to Dehradun for a Ranji game, and we landed somewhere around 7-8 PM. The last round of IPL auction was going on, and nothing had happened till that time. I frankly thought to myself, it’s done. Thank you. I will play the ongoing season (Ranji), and if needed the next one and call it quits because I do not want to play all my life, ‘Duniya jeetene ke liya aur bhi cheeze hain’, (there are a lot of other things I can do to be successful). I was very disappointed. But when the moment my family called, we broke down. Not many know how much of an emotional journey it was… That was it,” said Swapnil.

As RCB struggled to find the right spin combination through the first half of the season, they turned to Swapnil and he repaid the faith not just with the ball, but also with the bat.

He made his first appearance in RCB's ninth game in the season, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he dismissed Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen in the space of five balls in their chase. RCB later entrusted him with powerplay duties over the next four matches. He also put on an economical show against CSK, conceding just 13 runs in two overs while picking up that all-important catch to dismiss MS Dhoni.

Black IndyCar driver Myles Rowe says Penske equality program 'changed my world'

Myles Rowe recalls the moment he saw his first motor sports race on TV.

“My dad and I were watching Tiger Woods, who was playing in a golf tournament,” he told me Wednesday after visiting with ninth graders at Detroit’s University Prep Science and Math High School to share his inspiring story. “During a station break, my dad changed the channel and turned to another, which had a Formula One race on. I couldn’t stop watching it. There was so much energy, it just stuck.”

Though he was only 4 years old, it proved a defining moment — one that set him on a trajectory to step into an INDY NXT by Firestone race car, almost two decades later, at the upcoming Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix Presented by Lear that is set for May 31-June 2. He'll compete as the first African American driver who has won a North American open-wheel racing series championship following his USF Pro 2000 Series title last year. 

Rowe is particularly thankful to Roger Penske, “the Captain,” who started the multibillion-dollar Penske auto, logistics and motor sports empire in Bloomfield Hills, and who helps run the Detroit race along with his team. With Penske Entertainment Corp. operating IndyCar, the sanctioning body’s Race for Equality and Change initiative has helped open doors for Rowe and many others.

“It changed my world and my whole life,” Rowe said of the program. “I can’t tell you how impactful Roger Penske has been in my life.”

Rowe, now 23, grew up in Georgia driving go-karts and was so good he caught the attention of Will Power, Team Penske’s longtime driver, Indy 500 winner, and three-time Detroit Grand Prix race winner. Power helped steer Rowe to the program that’s focused on bringing more diversity to the sport.

Penske, 87 ,  told me a similar story about how he discovered racing. He had gone to the Indianapolis 500 with his dad. Young Penske took one look at the race cars and track and found his calling.

Penske would go on to become a winning race car driver himself but turned his focus to growing his automotive business. It was a few years later when he figured out a way to blend the two.

The Grand Prix calls

Penske and the Downtown Detroit Partnership took over the Detroit Grand Prix in 2007 and they continue to promote the race. With the Grand Prix taking place each spring, the Motor City’s reputation for hosting major sporting events continues to shine, as it did last month with the successful 2024 NFL draft, in which over 700,000 people — an NFL record — attended.

Two years ago, Bud Denker, president of Penske Corp. and chairman of the Detroit Grand Prix, worked with others to bring the race back downtown after 31 years. 

“We intentionally worked to make our event more inclusive and welcoming to everyone in Detroit and its surrounding communities, especially since its return downtown in 2023,” Denker told me recently.

Looking for the next motor sports champions

Penske and his team also recently helped some talented young people in metro Detroit learn about careers tied to racing, autos and mobility, by sponsoring a team of nine Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan Mobility Industry Club members as they participated in an autonomous racing championship held in Abu Dhabi on April 27.

The youth "joined the world’s first professional autonomous racing team, Code19 Racing,” said Shawn H. Wilson, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan.  “Competing against 18 teams from around the world, including college teams with advanced-level students, the Detroit team proudly secured the fifth position."

Wilson added: “We’re thankful that Roger and Team Penske through their support, helped our youth take their passion, energy and Detroit vs. Everybody mentality to Abu Dhabi and left their mark in the industry.”

Code19 Racing is an AI and robotics company that competes globally. Founded by military veterans, it’s dedicated to pushing the boundaries of autonomous racing and was selected to represent the U.S. in the inaugural Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League event held the same weekend as the NFL draft in Detroit.

Finishing touches were being put on the Grand Prix track in Detroit, Denker said, adding that over 150,000 people attended the event last year. He expects more this year.

Rowe, meanwhile, is looking forward to his Detroit racing debut.

I asked him what his long-term goal was.

“I‘d like to win the Indy 500. ... And I’d also like to give back and help others. It’s important to do that," he said. "I hope one day to be in a position to do that.”
