Translation : If people would only talk about what they understood, Earth would be a very quiet place.

Albert Einstein, the renowned physicist and one of the most influential thinkers of all time, astutely observed that our world is often filled with noise — noise born out of hasty judgments and empty chatter.

The power of this quote lies in its ability to resonate beyond the realm of science. It transcends disciplines and applies universally across all aspects of life — be it personal relationships, social issues, or even political discourse.

By embracing Einstein's sage advice, we can aspire to create a world where discussions are fueled by curiosity, empathy, and a genuine desire for growth.

Translation: Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the universe.

Another quote by Einstein not only showcases his remarkable wit and humor but also offers us a chance to reflect on our own tendencies and limitations as humans. While we may often marvel at the vastness of the universe and its seemingly infinite nature, Einstein playfully reminds us that human folly, too, can appear boundless.

It nudges us to ponder upon our own actions and decisions, urging us to recognize that we are all prone to moments of irrationality and imprudence. By acknowledging our own fallibility, we can strive to learn from our mistakes and cultivate wisdom through experience.

And, while we may not yet fully comprehend the extent of the universe's infinity, it serves as an inspiring reminder that there is still much left for us to uncover — both within ourselves and in the world around us.

Translation : You're not traveling in order to arrive but in order to travel.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the esteemed German writer and polymath who penned literary masterpieces such as The Sorrows of Young Werther and Faust , speaks to the very essence of what it means to embark on a journey.

Goethe's words serve as a powerful reminder that life is a voyage filled with countless adventures and experiences. They invite us to relish each moment along the way, savoring the discoveries, encounters, and personal growth that come with exploration.

This quote also transcends the concept of physical travel, extending to our metaphorical journeys through life. Whether it be personal development, relationships, or career aspirations, we often find ourselves striving toward specific goals and endpoints.

Goethe encourages us to shift our focus from merely achieving these objectives to fully embracing the process, allowing ourselves to learn and grow at every stage.

By adopting this mindset, we can foster a deeper sense of fulfillment and gratitude for life's many twists and turns, ultimately discovering that it is the journey itself that holds the true magic and wonder.

Iggy, Soren, Pocky, and Benji are on a bus trip across Europe.

Translation: Even from stones placed in one's path, one can build something beautiful.

This is another thought-provoking quote by Goethe, which serves as a potent reminder of the incredible potential that lies within our ability to adapt and overcome adversity.

The essence of this quote lies in its underlying message of transformation — the notion that even the most formidable challenges can be surmounted if we approach them with positivity and determination.

Moreover, this timeless adage highlights the importance of perspective: it is ultimately up to us to decide whether life's setbacks will hold us back or propel us forward. When faced with adversity, we have the unique opportunity to tap into our inner strength, ingenuity, and tenacity to transform hardships into triumphs.

By emphasizing the power of resilience and creativity, these German words encourage us to view life's obstacles not as insurmountable barriers but as opportunities for growth and innovation.

Translation : Only the strongest survive.

This evocative German proverb’s literal translation — “ Only the tough ones make it to the garden " — alludes to a deeper meaning grounded in Christian theology — the return of tenacious souls to the heavenly Garden of Eden.

In this interpretation, it is the resilient ones who ultimately reap their rewards, underscoring the significance of determination and mental fortitude in our lives.

The garden, in this context, symbolizes a place of achievement, fulfillment, and satisfaction — a reward for those who have weathered the storms and persevered. This proverb encourages us not only to recognize our own inner strength but also to channel it toward overcoming the hurdles that may stand in our way.

Furthermore, this adage highlights the transformative power of endurance — that the hardships we face often shape us into more resilient and capable individuals.

In a world where instant gratification is increasingly sought after, this age-old wisdom reminds us of the importance of patience and unwavering commitment to achieving our goals.

Translation : We rarely think about what we have, but always about what's missing.

This perceptive quote by the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer casts light on the common human tendency to fixate on what we lack rather than appreciating and embracing what we already possess.

The wisdom emanating from Schopenhauer's words encourages us to reframe our thoughts and adopt a more mindful approach in our daily lives.

By deliberately focusing on the blessings we have — be it our health, relationships, or material comforts — we can nurture a sense of fulfillment and happiness that may otherwise prove elusive in our fast-paced, goal-oriented society.

Soren, Iggy, Pocky, and Benji play a cardboard game. Pocky says, “I really appreciate you coming today.”

Translation: Every little bit helps.

This German proverb underscores the crucial role that seemingly insignificant actions and efforts play in our lives. The saying suggests that even the smallest contributions can accumulate to create substantial outcomes, reinforcing the idea that every step, no matter how minor, is essential to achieving success.

All too often, we become fixated on grandiose gestures and sweeping changes, overlooking the potential impact of small acts of kindness or minor adjustments to our habits. This proverb serves as an important reminder that the gradual accumulation of these seemingly inconsequential efforts can lead to remarkable results over time.

This timeless wisdom also emphasizes the importance of persistence and consistency in pursuing our goals. While it may be tempting to minimize the value of minor accomplishments, each small victory forms a vital building block upon which we construct our ultimate successes.

By recognizing and appreciating the significance of each step along our journey, we cultivate a mindset that fosters continued growth and progress.

Another English equivalent is “ Many pennies make a dollar. ”

Translation: It's a German necessity to speak badly of the government over a beer.

Otto von Bismarck's insightful comment highlights the importance of open, informal discussions as a cornerstone of democratic societies.

This quote serves as a reminder that politics is not solely reserved for the elite or those occupying positions of power. Instead, it emphasizes that political discussions should be accessible to all members of society, regardless of their background or social standing.

The informal setting of a pub, where individuals from all walks of life may gather and exchange ideas, is emblematic of this egalitarian perspective.

Translation: What doesn't kill me makes me stronger.

Perhaps one of the most popular German proverbs, a compelling aphorism coined by renowned German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, delves into the profound concept of growth through adversity.

By highlighting the transformative potential of overcoming life's challenges, Nietzsche's quote underscores the idea that withstanding hardship can ultimately fortify our character and resilience.

Nietzsche posits that when we confront and surmount obstacles, we not only evolve as individuals but also emerge stronger and more capable than before. Moreover, Nietzsche's words offer a valuable reminder of the importance of perseverance and tenacity when faced with difficulties.

As we navigate life's trials, we must draw upon our inner strength and determination to endure and eventually triumph over these challenges. In doing so, we unlock our potential for growth and transformation, becoming more resilient versions of ourselves.

Soren, Iggy, Pocky, and Benji are at the karaoke, all singing Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) very loudly.

Translation: The morning hour has gold in its mouth.

English equivalent: The early bird catches the worm.

The German adage encourages us to embrace productivity and make the most of the precious hours that lie before us.

At the heart of this saying lies a celebration of discipline and time management, two crucial elements for achieving our goals. By rising with the sun, we afford ourselves a head start on our daily tasks, thereby maximizing our potential for accomplishment.

This wise proverb acknowledges that those who capitalize on the quiet, uninterrupted morning hours often find themselves at an advantage when it comes to tackling challenges and staying ahead in their pursuits.

Establishing a consistent morning routine not only sets a positive tone for the day but also fosters a sense of purpose and motivation. By prioritizing an early start, we lay the foundation for a productive and fulfilling day.

Translation: All beginnings are difficult.

At the core of this saying is the recognition that uncertainty and obstacles are an intrinsic aspect of starting something new, whether it be a personal project, a career change, or a new relationship. These initial challenges often stem from factors such as inexperience, unfamiliarity, or fear of failure.

By accepting these challenges as a natural part of any beginning, we can approach them with a sense of understanding and patience, allowing ourselves room to learn and grow.

Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of resilience and grit when faced with these early struggles. As we navigate through the complexities of new undertakings, it is crucial to maintain our determination and commitment to our goals.

With time, perseverance, and focused effort, we can overcome these initial hurdles and pave our way to success.

Soren reads Goethe’s Faust at home.

learn german proverbs

1 . Aller Anfang ist schwer.

Literal translation: “All beginnings are hard.”

No matter what you are undertaking in life—learning a language, embarking on a new career or starting a project from scratch—you will suck at it at first.

That’s part of the natural order and the way it should be. Don’t worry too much and just keep at it until you get it right.

learn german proverbs

2 . Des Teufels liebstes Möbelstück ist die lange Bank.

Literal translation: “The devil’s favorite piece of furniture is the long bench.”

In German, putting something on the “long bench” means putting it off ( etwas auf die lange Bank schieben – another very good addition to your German slang phrases ).

Seems like Germans knew about procrastination long before the word was on everyone’s lips. What are you putting on the “long bench” that you could take care of right now? Don’t let the devil win.

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “He who rests grows rusty.”

This saying states that in order to improve your skills, you have to continuously work on them. It also warns that if you want to achieve anything, the most important thing is to take action.

Too many undertakings never get accomplished because of a lack of follow-through—so “get off your behind” already!

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “Starting is easy, persistence is an art.”

Starting something is much easier than seeing it through to the end. Haven’t we all had the experience of being full of enthusiasm at the beginning of a new venture only to have it fizzle out as time progressed?

Keeping up your motivation is an art form in itself, and one that needs to be cultivated.

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “Failure makes smart.”

Many of us live in cultures that are deeply averse to failure. Nobody likes to screw up or fall on their face, but failure is actually a necessary part of learning.

Without making mistakes, you will never understand how to do things properly. To quote Samuel Beckett: “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again, fail again, fail better.”

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “The cheapest is always the most expensive.”

This saying is a reminder to invest into quality. While the first impulse is often to go for the cheapest option, it’s usually worth it to spend a little more.

Whether on study material, tutors, or services, spending a little more for higher quality almost always pays off in the long run.

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “You don’t see the forest for all the trees.”

In life, it is important to see the big picture. If we only concentrate on the latest wins or failures instead of seeing our lives as a whole, we are vulnerable to fate’s whims and get frustrated easily.

So don’t give up on German just because you had a bad vocabulary day. You can pick it up again tomorrow.

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “First think, then act.”

Although taking action is important, it is of equal importance to take the right action. Determining which one that is requires some deliberate thinking.

This proverb reminds us to set the right priorities and make decisions about what we want instead of blindly rushing into battle.

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “Make haste with leisure.”

While it is important to work hard toward your goals and not be idle ( Wer rastet, der rostet, remember?), you also have to make time to smell the proverbial roses along the way.

If we are too focused on the outcome and the end result, it is easy to miss out on all the fun getting there.

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “Don’t worry about eggs that haven’t been laid yet.”

This one is a little bit like “don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”

While the English version asks us not to rely on means which we do not possess at this time, the German equivalent expresses the futility of worrying about things that haven’t come to pass yet and never might. That energy that can be spent much more productively.

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “Crooked logs also make straight fires.”

The perfect is the enemy of the good. A lot of people wait for the elusive “perfect moment” when the stars align and everything falls into place.

But life doesn’t work like that. This saying tells us to work with what we have available, not what we would like to have. To quote Theodore Roosevelt: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “You have to take things the way they come.”

In the same line of thought, life will seldom play out exactly the way we plan. It’s important to cultivate an adaptive mindset and deal with your current surroundings and conditions instead of wishing for things to be different.

So take life as it is, not as it should be.

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “The morning hour has gold in its mouth.”

This might be the most weird-sounding translation on the list (which German is prone to—just look at this list of German vocabulary with surprising meanings ).

It is one of the ways Germans stress the importance of getting up early to get a head start on the day. Many inventors and creators of our time have been early risers who have used the first hours of the day as their most productive period. Highly recommended.

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “Yourself is the man./Yourself is the woman.”

This saying is hard to translate literally. Its English equivalent is “Self do, self have.” Oftentimes we will use waiting for others as an excuse to not take action.

The proverb says that if you want something done, you have to do it yourself. While the original is the male version, Selbst ist die Frau is also widely used today.

learn german proverbs

15 . Taten sagen mehr als Worte.

Literal translation: “Actions say more than words.”

In German, actions don’t speak louder than words—they are just more verbose. Of course, the meaning of this is to talk less and do more.

A lot of people want to do great things and like to talk about their plans but lack follow-through. Let your actions speak instead of your voice.

learn german proverbs

16 . Übung macht den Meister.

Literal translation: “Practice is what makes a master.”

Mastery is hard to attain. It takes continuous honing of your skills to get really good at something. Be prepared to put in the time!

Whether it’s business savvy, physical skills or language proficiency, there are no shortcuts.

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “He who chases two rabbits at once will catch none.”

This is the German way of telling you to stop multitasking. Be focused. Concentrate on one thing at a time and then move on to the next.

Well done, grasshopper. (By the way, does anybody else think words like these should really be spoken by a wise kung fu master?)

learn german proverbs

18 . Wer A sagt, muss auch B sagen.

Literal translation: “He who says A also has to say B.”

No, this is not the slowest way to learn the alphabet. Instead, it means that if you commit to something, you should commit to it all the way. Don’t half-ass things or cherry pick.

The saying refers to people with the attitude of Wasch mir den Pelz aber mach mich nicht nass (wash my fur but don’t get me wet), meaning that they want something to happen but are unwilling to make the sacrifices required for it.

learn german proverbs

19 . Wenn der Reiter nichts taugt, ist das Pferd schuld.

Literal translation: “If the rider is no good, it’s the horse’s fault.”

When we attempt something and fail, we sometimes want to shift the blame away from ourselves. It’s more comforting to imagine that external factors and circumstances caused the outcome.

The German proverb reminds us to take responsibility instead. Germans have many more funny expressions that involve animals, so check them out!

20 . Der Hunger kommt beim Essen.

Literal translation: “Appetite emerges while eating.”

If motivation runs low, one of the hardest things to do is to get started. Yes, we want to learn German. Yes, we committed to this time for our studying session. But we just don’t feel like it.

Start by studying a little bit, even for just a minute. More often than not, you will find that after working for a while and easing into the process, it actually becomes fun and easier to continue.

learn german proverbs

Literal translation: “Work is work and liquor is liquor.”

Even if we are doing work that we enjoy, it isn’t always all puppies and rainbows. Sometimes, it’s just work and you just have to get through it—but there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

It is also a reminder to schedule periods of recovery. Just don’t overdo it with the Schnapps or you won’t feel too recovered afterward.

travel quotes deutsch

Literal translation: “Quickly ripened doesn’t hold stiff.”

The best English equivalent, though, is “early ripe, early rotten.”

This expression is often applied to children , as it’s thought that someone with many talents early on in their childhood won’t hold onto them for long as they grow up.

travel quotes deutsch

Literal translation: “Only the strong come into the garden.”

It basically means only the strongest survive—who knows what exactly is going on in the garden, but it seems you have to be tough to make it!

travel quotes deutsch

24. Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei.

Literal translation: “Everything has an end, only the sausage has two.”

Did you know that German has a lot of proverbs and sayings that revolve around sausages? It’s true! The Germans love a good wurst (sausage)  so much that they can’t help but write proverbs about them.

This one is easy to understand as it’s quite literal—everything has an end, no matter how long something takes. However, that’s not the case for the good old sausage!

travel quotes deutsch

Literal translation: “Small animals also produce dung.”

That might not paint such a pretty picture, but it does have a meaningful message behind it: small amounts always add up to something bigger.

So, don’t give up on your German studies, even if it feels like you’re inching along! As this piece of German wisdom indicates, it’s a good idea to keep working on something even if you only do it bit by bit.

travel quotes deutsch

Literal translation: “Life isn’t a pony farm.”

It basically means that you can’t live like a pony at a pony farm and have your every whim taken care of for you.

In other words, you can’t always get what you want!

travel quotes deutsch

Literal translation: “Children and drunks always tell the truth.”

In English we might say something similar: “children and fools tell the truth.”

This phrase can be used to describe certain groups of people who are much more likely to be open and honest about a situation, for better or for worse. Children are the worst at keeping secrets and drunks are often a little loose-tongued, while the rest of us know how to lie when we want to.

travel quotes deutsch

Literal translation: “If you give the devil your little finger, he’ll take the whole hand.”

In English, we have the proverb “if you give an inch, they’ll take a mile.” Simply put, it means that people can take advantage of you if you let them.

german wisdom quotes

Literal translation: “Close the lid, the monkey is dead.”

The English version doesn’t have such dark connotations, thankfully. We’d simply say, “let’s end this” or even “end of story.” And no monkey gets hurt in the process!

travel quotes deutsch

Literal translation: “What I don’t know doesn’t make me hot.”

You can think about this one in terms of the English phrase “hot and bothered,” relating to frustration or being flustered. We’ve all heard people say “what you don’t know can’t hurt you,” which is how we’d usually translate this expression.

travel quotes deutsch

Literal translation: “What little Hans doesn’t learn, adult Hans will never know.”

It’s basically our version of “you can’t teach an old dogs new tricks,” but with humans!

You should take particular note of the word  H änschen  (little Hans) in this sentence. It’s in the diminutive form , which is often used for children’s names.

travel quotes deutsch

Literal translation: “Don’t poke around in the beehive.”

This equates to another one of our dog-themed proverbs in English. We’d say, “let sleeping dogs lie.”

You don’t want to bother the bees or the sleeping dogs. Who knows what they’ll do if you disturb them!

travel quotes deutsch

Literal translation: “Where the foxes say good night.”

The British idiom for a highly remote place, “the back of beyond,” would be an equivalent for this quote. Seen any foxes out there lately?

travel quotes deutsch

Literal translation: “A sparrow in the hand is better than a pigeon on the roof.”

You’ll have certainly heard the English proverb, “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” The Germans just specify which birds they’re talking about in their quote.

travel quotes deutsch

Literal translation: “Work is the best jacket.”

The English version of the wise saying, “the best way to warm yourself up is by doing something useful.”

This list of proverbs should help prepare you to hear some unusual phrases in everyday German so you’ll know when not to take a sentence literally. It’s also a good starting point for anyone who wants to learn more phrases to use at parties or memorize romantic phrases to impress a German-speaking crush.

If you want to review proverbs and other interesting sayings, use an online dictionary like WordReference . Sayings can differ by dialect and change over time, so you can get some useful info from German speakers in WordReference’s comment sections.

13 Most Beautiful German Quotes (& The Inspiring Figures Behind Them)

13 Most Beautiful German Quotes (& The Inspiring Figures Behind Them)

Germans get a bit typecast as “serious” people, but there’s so much more to them than that!

There are actually a great number of creative people of German descent!

There are many writers, poets, play writers, and philosophers, who come from Germany and did their best and most expressive work in their native language.

There are also many famous figures in the realms of science and politics who spoke German and expressed themselves beautifully in their native tongue.

Given the hidden depths of German culture, and how many people in the world speak German, there are actually a lot of beautiful, profound, and sensible quotes about life that are in German. Here is a sampling of some of the most beautiful German quotes out there.

1. Denke an all das Schöne, was in dir selbst und dich herum wächst und sei glücklich!

English Translation : Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy!

Many cultures all over the world are familiar with the story of Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl who kept a diary which she filled with hopeful and beautiful thoughts, even as she and her family were hiding and fearing for their lives from the Nazis. This quote about still being able to appreciate the beauty and feel joy, no matter the circumstances, deserves the number one spot in this list of most beautiful German quotes.

2. Lebe, wie du, wenn du stirbst, wünschen wirst, gelebt zu haben.

English Translation : Live like, when you die, you will wish to have lived.

This is an example of how some of the most beautiful German quotes come from poets and writers of German descent. This lovely line about how to live one’s best life is from a 1757 poem by Christian Fürchtegott Gellert called “Vom Tode” or “From Death”.

3. Ein jeder kehr’ vor seiner Tür, und rein ist jedes Stadtquartier.

English Translation : It’s a German necessity to speak badly of the government over a beer.

This quote from Otto von Bismarck , the first chancellor of the German Empire, sums up the way that German’s think about politics. For Germans, local and national politics is something that everyone, even the “ordinary” German, should be aware of and capable of talking about even in casual conversation. Possibly because of their keen sense of history, German’s consider it important to be politically aware and keep a critical eye on the doings of the government.

4. Wir leben alle unter dem gleichen Himmel, aber wir haben nicht alle den gleichen Horizont.

English Translation : We all live under the same sky, but we don’t all have the same horizon.

This quote from Konrad Adenauer, who was the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, is a gentle reminder of the systemic circumstances that keep us all from being “equal”. While we are all human, political, economic, and social circumstances sometimes limit the opportunities some people get.

5. Wer sein selbst Meister ist und sich beherrschen kann, dem ist die weite Welt und alles untertan.

English Translation : He, who is master of himself and has command over his emotions, has at his feet the whole wide world and everything therein.

This wise and beautiful German quote about the importance of self-control is actually the ending of a poem by Paul Fleming. The poem, “ An Sich ” or “To Oneself” was written back in 1641 but is still considered good advice for living today. You should try to find it, reading or listening to poetry and songs in German is a fun and easy way to learn.

6. Auch aus Steinen, die einem in den Weg gelegt werden, kann man Schönes bauen.

English Translation : Even from the stones placed in your way for you to stumble on, you can create something beautiful.

This quote from Goethe is a reminder that life’s hardships are not insurmountable and what seems like a stumbling block now might actually give you a boost towards achieving something better. Goethe, full name Johan Wolfgang von Goeth is an example of a very accomplished German man, being not just a poet, playwright, and novelist but also a scientist and statesman. Many of the people behind the quotes on this list are worth looking into and Goeth’s works are highly recommended as he is one of the greatest German literary figures of the modern era .

7. Wir denken selten an das, was wir haben, aber immer an das, was uns fehlt.

English Translation: We rarely think of what we have, but always of what we lack.

This wise and beautiful German quote from the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer is quite similar to the idea behind the English idiom which states that the “grass is always greener on the other side”. Both are a gentle admonishment against envy, and the perils of always thinking about what other people have instead of enjoying what you yourself have.

8. Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich starker

English Translation : What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger.

If there is one quote in the list of most beautiful German quotes that is easily recognizable even to non-German speakers, it would probably be this quote from the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It’s from his 1889 book "Götzen-Dämmerung" or “Twilight of the Idols”. If you’ve heard or used this quote in English, well, now you know how it’s said in the original language.

9. Jeder, der sich die Fähigkeit erhält, Schönes zu erkennen, wird nie alt werden.

English Translation: Anyone who holds on to the ability to see beauty never grows old.

This quote about the importance of being aware of the beauty of the world around us comes from the novelist and short-story writer Franz Kafka. This statement by Kafka was included in a book by his friend the Czech poet and memoirist Gustav Janouch titled  “Gespräche mit Kafka”  or “Conversations with Kafka”.

10. Alle Zeit, die nicht mit dem Herzen wahrgenommen wird, ist verlorene Zeit.

English Translation : All time that is not experienced with the heart is lost time.

Another beautiful German quote about the importance of living fully in the moment and being aware of everything that is going on around us, from Michael Ende.  Ende is a beloved writer of children’s fantasy fiction, his epic fantasy “The Neverending Story” wasn’t just translated into English but also made into a series of Hollywood movies in the 80s and 90s.

11. Das Schönste, was wir erleben können, ist das Geheimnisvolle.

English Translation: The most beautiful thing we can experience is a mystery.

Many of the most beautiful German quotes in this list have something to do with how you look at life and this quote from physicist Albert Einstein gives us some insight on one of the greatest brains in the 20th century looked at life. Given all the scientific discoveries Einstein either directly made or inspired, it’s not surprising that he approached everything with a healthy curiosity and an open mind. He didn’t despair if he didn’t understand something; rather he saw it as a challenge.

12. Wer kämpft, kann verlieren.Wer nicht kämpft, hat schon verloren.

English Translation: He who fights can lose, but he who does not fight has already lost.

Many wise German expressions and idioms talk about the value of persevering, even in the face of hardship. This quote from Bertolt Brecht is much in the same vein. Brecht was a playwright born in 1898 who served his country in World War I but was forced to flee when the Nazis came to power.

13. Das Leben und dazu eine Katze, das gibt eine unglaubliche Summe.

English Translation: Life and a cat, that adds up to an incredible sum.

Many people will tell you that the secret to enjoying life is to appreciate the little things or to gain the affections of a cat. In this quote, that seems to be what poet Rainer Marie Rilke believed was the key to a satisfying existence.

You might be wondering why we are recommending that you take the time to study these beautiful German quotes. Wouldn’t your time be better spent memorizing common German conversational phrases ?

While it is important to learn German words – even slang and swear words – if you want to develop the ability to hold daily conversations with German speakers, that’s not the only reason to learn German.

To really understand German-speakers, you need to also know and study what is in their hearts and minds. How they think and feel about love and life, what makes them sad and happy –these are all things you can learn by studying quotes such as the ones in this post.

As we mentioned at the start of this post, there are many famous people of German descent who have a lot of interesting things to say, and the quotes here are just a small sample.

Learn German Travel Phrases

German Phrases You Might Hear

You might also hear the following German expressions:

Gerne - "gladly” or “my pleasure”

Bitte schön - "there you go” or “you’re welcome”

Both of these are often used in restaurants and cafes, when the waiting staff bring your food or drinks over, and also in shops. More on that later!

German Phrases in the Hotel

One of the first things you’ll do when you arrive in a German-speaking country is check into your hotel. There are a few standard phrases which you can use, and the checking in procedure usually follows the same pattern.

The receptionist will ask if you have a reservation (listen for ‘Reservierung’ ), they’ll ask your name (listen for ‘Name’ [Nahmeh] ) and they’ll give you your key (listen for ‘Schüssel’ ).

Checking in to the Hotel in German

Kann ich bitte einchecken? - “Can I check in please?”

Ich habe eine Reservierung - “I have a reservation”

Mein Name ist (...) - “My name is (...)”

Ich bleibe bis Montag hier / bis zum vierundzwanzigsten (24th) Juni hier - “I’m staying here until Monday / until the 24th June”

Wann / wo gibt es Frühstück? - ”When is breakfast?”

Gibt es hier WLAN [vee-lan]? - “ Is there wifi here?”

Wie lautet das WLAN-Passwort? - “What is the wifi password?”

Um wie viel Uhr muss man auschecken? - “By what time must I check out?”

Kann ich bitte auschecken? - “ Can I check out, please?”

What You May Hear in German at the Hotel

Haben Sie eine Reservierung? - “Do you have a reservation?”

Wie ist Ihre Name? - “What is your name?”

Bleiben Sie hier für drei (3) Nächte / eine (1) Woche / zwei (2) Wochen? - “Are you staying here for 3 nights / 1 week / 2 weeks?”

Frühstück ist bis sieben (7) Uhr bis zehn (10) Uhr - “Breakfast is from 7am until 10am”

Ihre Zimmernummer ist… - “Your room number is…”

Shopping in German

If you’re out exploring the city, you’ll probably want to do a bit of shopping for souvenirs. The first phrase (ich schaue mich nur um) in this section was pretty essential for me in the early days when I was too nervous to speak much German. If a shop assistant comes up to help and you’re just having a look around or you’re too nervous to speak, this phrase can come in handy.

What You Can Say When Shopping in German

Ich schaue mich nur um - “I’m just looking around”

Ich suche nach… - “I’m looking for…”

Wie viel kostet das? - “How much does that cost?”

Kann ich mit Bargeld / Kreditkarte bezahlen? - “Can I pay with cash / credit card?”

Könnte ich eine Tüte haben? - “Could I have a bag?”

What You May Hear While Shopping in German

Kann ich Ihnen helfen? - “Can I help you?”

Möchten Sie es probieren? - “Would you like to try it?”

Eating Out in German

When it comes to eating out, this is a really great way to practice a bit of basic German. You only need a few phrases to get by. Your power phrase in this section is ich hätte gern… which you can use for any food or drink order. It’s very polite and the serving staff will appreciate it.

Like when checking into the hotel, there is usually a set pattern to look out for when in a cafe or restaurant:

The waiter will ask for your drinks order (listen for trinken ), they will then ask for your food order (listen for essen ) and later they will ask if you’d like a dessert (listen for Nachtisch ).

What You Can Say in German When Dining Out

Haben Sie ein Tisch für ein (1) / zwei (2) / drei (3) Person(en)? - “Do you have a table for 1 / 2 / 3 person / people?”

Ich hätte gern (…) bitte - “I would like (...) please”

  • einen schwarzen Tee (mit Milch) - “a black tea (with milk)”
  • einen Kaffee - “a coffee”
  • ein Mineralwasser - “a mineral water”
  • ein Glas Rotwein - “a glass of red wine”
  • ein Glas Weißwein - “a glass of white wine”
  • ein Bier - “a beer”

Könnte ich ein stück Kuchen haben? - “Could I have a piece of cake?”

Was empfehlen Sie? - “What do you recommend?”

Kann ich bitte bezahlen? - “Can I pay please?”

What You Might Hear in German at a Restaurant

Was möchten Sie? - “What would you like?”

Ich empfehle (...) - “I recommend (...)”

Was möchten Sie trinken? - “What would you like to drink?”

Was möchten Sie essen? - “What would you like to eat?”

Möchten Sie die Nachtischkarte? - “Would you like the dessert menu?”

Essential travel phrases in German

Sightseeing in German

When you’re out sightseeing, you’ll probably be able to find an English language tour guide. But there are a lot of situations where you might be on your own and need to ask where something is. The simple phrase wo ist… is very useful and easy to remember.

Entschuldigen Sie bitte - “excuse me please”

Wo ist (…)? - “Where is (...)?”

  • die Touristeninformation - “the tourist information”
  • das Stadtzentrum - “the city centre”
  • das Museum - “the museum”
  • der Dom - “the cathedral”
  • das Rathaus - “the town hall”
  • der Bahnhof - “the train station”

When You Struggle to Understand German

If all else fails, here are some phrases to memorize to help you if you have trouble understanding German. Trust me, I used these a lot when I first started visiting Germany. If you’re a bit nervous about your German, committing a few of these phrases to memory can help you get out of tricky situations.

Ich verstehe nicht - “I don’t understand”

Ich spreche kein Deutsch - “I don’t speak German”

Mein Deutsch ist nicht so gut - “my German is not so good”

Sprechen Sie Englisch? - “Do you speak English?”

Langsamer bitte - “slower please”

Können Sie das bitte wiederholen? - “Can you repeat that, please?”

Was bedeutet (…)? - “What does (...) mean?”

Bitte haben Sie Geduld mit mir - “please be patient with me”

So now you know all my essential German travel phrases! These helped me out a lot, and I hope you find them useful on your travels, too!

“Fear makes a wolf bigger than he is.” – German proverb

“I don’t really know how it feels for an American to go to Mexico, but if you come from Germany, Mexico is a really exotic place. It has this laid back vibe, at least in the countryside, and things don’t seem to be as over-civilized as they are here in Europe. – Apparat

German Sayings

Here are are favourite famous German sayings:

“A language of “angry, angry poetry.”

“When one is polite in German, one lies.”

“German is only romantic if you have a past in it.”

“In wine there is wisdom. In beer there is strength. In water there is bacteria.” – Old German Proverb

“Beiß nicht in die Hand, die dich füttert. – Do not bite the hand that feeds you.

German Expressions

Here are are favourite famous German expressions:

“Du gehst mir auf den Keks” – This phrase literally translates to “You’re going on my cookie” and it can be used when someone is really getting on your nerves.

“Ich hab’ dich lieb” – There’s  ich liebe dich which means you’re completely  in  love with someone or something. But they also have a stage that sits somewhere around  puppy love  on the spectrum and it’s best used when you want to express love, but don’t want to be too on the nose about it.

“Das ist nicht mein Bier” – Has someone ever told you a problem that you  really don’t care about, or want nothing to do with? “That’s not my beer” literally expresses that emotion in five short words.

Kummerspeck – When you are going through a relationship breakup or other times of sadness, it’s common to put on a few pounds of “Kummerspeck.” Literally meaning “grief bacon,” this is the weight put on by emotional eating. So when you find yourself on the couch watching Bridget Jones’ Diary with a tub of ice cream, you are in fact feeding your grief bacon (or possibly turning into grief bacon itself).

JETZT GEHT’S UM DIE WURST – Literally translating to “now it’s about the sausage,” the English equivalent would be “all or nothing.” You know the Germans are serious when it’s about a sausage!

“ Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof. I only understand “train station.” – Regardless, this idiom comes in handy when you don’t really understand something, meaning the same as “It’s all Greek to me.”

Das ist mir Wurst. That’s sausage to me. – A very artful way of saying that you don’t care at all, this is considered even stronger than Das ist egal(That doesn’t matter).

SCHNAPPSIDEE – I think we have all experienced this one. A “Schnappsidee,” or quite literally a Schnapps idea, is an idea you had while drunk that you will probably regret in the morning.

“Das Leben ist kein Ponyhof. Life is no pony farm” – Life isn’t a rose garden. Apparently it’s also not a place where you can take your kids for rides. As you can tell, Germany is a country of both equestrian enthusiasts and realists.

“Da liegt der Hund begraben. That’s where the dog’s buried.” – Translating as “That’s the heart of the matter,” it may sound funny to us, but in German it’s a useful sentence to show that you really know what the situation is about.

German Quotes about Love

Here are are favourite famous German quotes about love:

“Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing.”

“Ich liebe dich. – I love you.”

“Ich danke dir immer dafur, dass du mein Regenbogen nach dem Sturm bist. – Thank you for always being my rainbow after the storm.”

“Wo man Liebe sat, da wachst Freude. – When you sow love, joy with grow.”

“Nicht die Schonheit bestimmt, wen wir lieben, sondern die Liebe, wen wir schon finden. – It’s not beauty which determines whom we love but love determines whom we find beautiful.”

“Die Summe unseres Lebens sind die Stunden, in denen wir liebten. – The summation of our life is the hours in which we were loving.” – Wilhelm Busch

“Der liebe ist kein wind zu kalt. – No wind is too cold for lovers.”

“Mit dir zusammen zu sein ist Ort an dem ich mich am wohlsten fuhle. – Together with you is my favorite place to be”

“Wider die Liebe ist kein Kraut gewacbsen. – There is no cure for love.”

“My first time in Germany. We started off in Heidelberg, which is this quaint, nice town. The Germans, they shoot just like the Americans, except for, if it’s a 10-hour day, they’re leaving at 5. You don’t go to 5:30, 6, 7. No. And then we had a fest for everything.” – Craig Robinson

95 most inspirational travel quotes ever penned

Our favourite inspirational travel quotes have encouraged us to travel with abandon over the years. Perhaps they will do the same for you…

For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.

Sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves at just how ridiculous our lives have become: an ex-teacher and jobbing writer travelling the world for a living. It is absurd, it is astonishing, it is luxury.

When I first went travelling at 21 years old, my father gave me this quote scrawled on a piece of card.

inspirational travel quotes

It infused me with wanderlust. It encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, make the most of my time, see the world and enjoy the freedom that comes with being on the road. It remains one of the most inspirational travel quotes I’ve read (even if Twain did not actually say it).

Today, 20 years and almost 100 countries later, it’s still in my wallet. Despite its tattered and dishevelled appearance, it’s every bit as important to me now as it was then.

With that in mind, we’ve collated our most beloved inspirational travel quotes to encourage readers to “explore, dream and discover” for themselves.

• Mark Twain Travel Quotes

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime.
To do something, say something, see something, before anybody else — these are the things that confer a pleasure compared with which other pleasures are tame and commonplace, other ecstasies cheap and trivial. Lifetimes of ecstasy crowded into a single moment.

travel quotes deutsch

It is the loveliest fleet of islands [ Hawaii ] that lies anchored in any ocean.
No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me but that one [ Hawaii ], no other land could so longingly and so beseechingly haunt me, sleeping and waking, through half a lifetime, as that one has done. Other things leave me, but it abides; other things change, but it remains the same.   For me the balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surfbeat is in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud wrack; I can feel the spirit of its wildland solitudes, I can hear the splash of its brooks; in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago.

travel quotes deutsch

Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless.   We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us. Tour masters, schedules, reservations, brass-bound and inevitable, dash themselves to wreckage on the personality of the trip. Only when this is recognized can the blown-in-the glass bum relax and go along with it. Only then do the frustrations fall away. In this a journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it. — John Steinbeck
What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? – it’s the too-huge world vaulting us, and it’s good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies. — Jack Kerouac
A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for. — J.A. Shedd

travel quotes deutsch

It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any. — Hugh Laurie
Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the Earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white. — Mark Jenkins

travel quotes deutsch

The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. — Christopher McCandless
Adventure is allowing the unexpected to happen to you. Exploration is experiencing what you have not experienced before. How can there be any adventure, any exploration, if you let somebody else – above all, a travel bureau – arrange everything before-hand? — Richard Aldington
Be careful because Cambodia is the most dangerous place you will ever visit. You will fall in love with it, and eventually it will break your heart. — Joel Brinkley

travel quotes deutsch

When you’ve managed to stumble directly into the heart of the unknown – either through the misdirection of others, or better yet, through your own creative ineptitude – there is no one there to hold your hand or tell you what to do. In those bad lost moments, in the times when we are advised not to panic, we own the unknown, and the world belongs to us. The child within has full reign. Few of us are ever so free. — Tim Cahill

If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.
Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.
It’s an irritating reality that many places and events defy description. Angkor Wat and Machu Picchu , for instance, seem to demand silence, like a love affair you can never talk about.   For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you’ve been and what’s happened. In the end, you’re just happy you were there — with your eyes open — and lived to see it.

travel quotes deutsch

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
I’m a big believer in winging it. I’m a big believer that you’re never going to find the perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I’m always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary.
Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? … I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.

travel quotes deutsch

It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.   Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.
I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.
Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.
Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.

travel quotes deutsch

I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder.   I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.
At this point I think my body is like an old car. Another dent ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference. At best it’s a reminder that you’re still alive and lucky as hell. Another tattoo, another thing you did, another place you’ve been.

travel quotes deutsch

Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.
If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.
Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

Police Officer Is Now Family After Saving Three-Month-Old

Being a new parent is terrifying because you’re always expecting the worst. But when the worst actually happens, and your baby stops breathing, you hope that a stranger like this police officer will be there to save the day.

A Harrowing Incident

Officer Mike Harton sits with Tooka, he girl whose life he once saved

CBS News/YouTube

A normal day at the movies turned into a new mother ’s worst nightmare five years ago when her three-month-old daughter Tooka stopped breathing. Nikki Huckaby ran out of the theater and screamed for help.

“I was standing there, and that’s when she came running toward this way,” Officer Mike Harton recalled to CNN . “[The baby] curled back, trying to take a breath, and then she went completely limp on me.”

It was then that Harton’s training kicked in and he started performing chest compressions and back blows, trying to get Tooka breathing again.

“All I was thinking, is like, she cannot die in this movie theater,” Huckaby recalled.

“All I could think in my head was, 'Not on my watch, not on my watch,'” Harton added.

Saving a Life

After 30 long seconds, Tooka finally released a small cry. It was music to the mom and officer’s ears. “That cry was the best cry ever,” Harton said.

“I literally watched a miracle happen before my eyes,” Huckaby said.

From that moment on, Harton began calling Tooka “Little Angel” and the officer became a part of the family ’s life. He was even asked to be Tooka’s godfather. Today, he’s there for all of the five-year-old’s big life events: birthdays, holidays, and the first day of school. Tooka even wants to be a police officer when she grows up.

“That day, an angel came down,” Harton continued. “She did more for me than I did for her. My life changed that day. Our family got extended, and it’s amazing.”

Positive Relationships

In the interview, Huckaby explained that she and Harton wanted to share their story to show that positive police relationships can — and should — exist.

“A lot of people don’t get a chance to have that positive relationship with police officers. I hope this story is an example of how you can come together from different worlds and really be family because we are humans first,” Huckaby said.

It’s a nice reminder that the police in our communities do more than we think and are there to serve first and foremost. By highlighting more of these examples, we can deepen our relationships with police officers who show up for those in need, lend a helping hand, and continue to show up long after their official duties are done.

Jennifer Garner's Mom Once Made a Dollar a Day

Growing up, Jennifer Garner’s mom didn’t have much. Patricia Ann Garner’s family lived on an old farm and she earned only a dollar a day babysitting. Despite her mom’s financial struggles , Garner says the woman was determined to change her fate with hard work and resilience.

A Rough Start

Jennifer Garner and Patricia Ann Garner

Instagram/@jennifer.garner

Jennifer Garner was born in Houston, Texas, in 1972 and grew up in West Virginia. She was the middle of three daughters , and her family was a happy one. She recalls taking violin in school (and being so bad at it that her mom offered to pay her to never play again), studying ballet for nine years, and majoring in chemistry at Denison University before switching majors.

Little did she know that her decision to pursue the arts would one day come full circle for her mother.

Patricia grew up in Oklahoma on a 20-acre farm that her parents bought. The house was a two-room house with no electricity, running water, or indoor plumbing, and in 1936, it sold for a cool $700.

“As a farm girl growing up on a tiny farm in Locust Grove, OK, my mother earned $1.00 a day for babysitting her neighbor’s five children,” Garner shared on Instagram . “My mom’s family was poor— I’m sure she cherished that money — but it was the neighbor’s old LIFE magazines that really shaped Mom’s future.”

Forging a New Path

Eventually, Patricia knew she had to leave the farm to pursue a better life. So, as the farm changed hands between her uncles following her father’s death, she set out into the world. She met her husband, a chemical engineer named William John Garner, and became a teacher . They had three kids together and showered them with love.

After Garner became famous through roles like Alias and 13 Going On 30 , she began telling the story of how her mother came from humble roots and put together a beautiful life for her and her sisters. She also realized a lifelong goal, of traveling to all 50 states and visiting all seven continents.

“I think my mom was so poor, it's just unbelievable that she managed to leave,” Garner said in a 2020 interview . “When I moved to New York after college, my mom said, 'Jennifer, no matter what you do, it will never be as big of a deal as it was for me to leave that farm.'"

Embracing Their Roots

See on Instagram

Despite her rough upbringing, Patricia never wanted to keep it quiet. In that same 2020 interview, Garner explained how she and her mom had discussed Garner's openness about it. According to Garner, her mom is good with it.

“She said, 'I'm never ashamed of growing up poor,'" Garner recalled. "Rather, I am amazed by the grace and dignity that my parents had throughout my childhood.'”

Garner is embracing those roots, too. In 2017, she purchased the farm where her mother grew up from her uncle. They agreed that her aunt and uncle would live there and maintain the property, which now boasts an additional 35 acres.

The farm produces pumpkins, blueberries, field peas, and rye to help the soil, reports The Oklahoman . Some of that produce is used for Garner’s baby food company, Once Upon a Farm.

“I definitely am another generation removed from what my mom gave us and certainly from what she had,” Garner, now a mother of three, said in 2015. “But I hope that my mothering has been so infused by Pat Garner that there's a germ of it in there.”

An Eye on the Future

This inspiring story is even more so because we know how it turned out for Garner and her family. But Patricia’s experience also teaches an important lesson: never give up. Sometimes, life deals you what feels like an impossible hand, and it can be hard to push through.

However, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a brighter future or that things won’t improve. Sometimes, a dream and the will to make it happen are all you need. Rather than giving up, look for opportunities, take calculated risks, and know when it’s time to move on.

After all, if a woman who once made a dollar a day could do it, so can you.

101 of the Best Travel Quotes to Inspire Amazing Adventures

I’ve put together 101 of the best travel quotes as a reminder, motivation, and remembrance for the reasons why we travel.

I’m not just talking about the sightseeing and beach vacations. Travel is about the journey as much as the beautiful destination.

We learn about the world by experiencing new cultures and ways of living, in turn learning about ourselves.

I’ve been traveling the world for a few years – Will has been traveling for over 9 years – and the rest of the Broke Backpacker crew has put quite a dent in their passports too. I think these awesome quotes about traveling highlight some of the magnificent journeys and lessons we’ve experienced along the way.

Why? Because Travel quotes provide inspiration and capture truths about travel, adventure, and life.

Just like travel, words have the power to open our minds to completely new perspectives, which is why I hope this collection of quotes about travel and powerful words will inspire you to get out there and experience some adventurous travel yourself.

2. We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.” – Anonymous

This is one of my favorite quotes about traveling. A lot of people think that one travels to escape life, or that long-term travelers are running away from reality. The way I see it – sure – maybe vacations are a quick escape from the real world, but traveling is a way to embrace life’s grandest adventures. Traveling is a way for life not to escape us.

3. “Travel doesn’t become adventure until you leave yourself behind.” – Marty Rubin

5. “to live is to travel, on a voyage more epic than the odysseys of myth – not from place to place, but through the poignant strangeness of time.” – t.l rese.

Travel Quote 2

6. “Travel often; Getting lost will help you find yourself.” – Holstee Manifesto

Some of my best travel experiences were not necessarily butterflies and rainbows. Sometimes they were uncomfortable and painful. Sometimes I have quite literally gotten lost, but in the end, these experiences have helped me find myself.

I think that is what traveling is often about: finding – or at least rediscovering – aspects of yourself.

7. “Travel has a way of stretching the mind. The stretch comes not from travel’s immediate rewards, the inevitable myriad new sights, smells and sounds, but with experiencing firsthand how others do differently what we believed to be the right and only way.” – Ralph Crawshaw

8. “a man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.” – george a. moore, 9. “sometimes it’s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination.” –   drake.

This is one of the most important travel quotes. Doesn’t matter how long you’re traveling for, you’ll see new cultures, open your mind and change your way of thinking – even if it’s just a little bit. Traveling shows us sides of the world but also about yourself that you’ve never seen before. Having a different view on things helped a lot of people when it comes to making hard decisions.

10. “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture are like a tree without roots.” – Marcus Garvey

Travel Quote 3

11. Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comforts of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things. -air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky. -all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.” –  Cesare Pavese

I love this traveling the world quote from Cesare Pavese. Having been on the road for the last few years, he nailed my experience spot on. Nothing is certain – except air, sleep, the sea, the sky – but that is what traveling is about: embracing the unknown and trusting the process. The way I see it, the only thing for certain is what is happening in the now.

12. “Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit.” – Jawaharlal Nehru

13. “culture is the arts elevated to a set of beliefs.” – thomas wolfe, 14. “traveling — it gives you home in a thousand strange places, then leaves you a stranger in your own land.” – ibn battuta.

This is one of the most beautiful travel quotes. Meeting so many new people, making new friends and even finding a second family, has to be one of the best aspects of traveling. Having traveled quite a bit, I can say that having multiple homes is definitely an amazing feeling, although it can also create some distance between you and your original home.

15. “Culture is a way of coping with the world by defining it in detail.” – Malcolm Bradbury

Travel Quote 4

16. “Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”- Ibn Battuta

Probably one of the best travel quotes I’ve heard – the play on words, the sincerity, and the capture of what it means to travel. Traveling will undoubtedly leave you speechless, surprised, and lost for words, but those words will be found, and you will have epic stories to tell.

18. “To travel is to take a journey into yourself.” – Danny Kaye

19. “every journey is personal. every journey is spiritual. you can’t compare them, can’t replace, can’t repeat. you can bring back the memories but they only bring tears to your eyes.” – diana ambarsari, 20. “the perfect journey is never finished, the goal is always just across the next river, round the shoulder of the next mountain. there is always one more track to follow, one more mirage to explore.” – rosita forbes, 21. “travel can also be the spirit of adventure somewhat tamed, for those who desire to do something they are a bit afraid of.” – ella maillart.

Travel Quote 5

22. “Remember that happiness is a way of travel – not a destination.” –  Roy M. Goodman

I think this is one of my favorite quotes about travel. Having been to 30 or so countries, and plenty of destinations among them, one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that happiness does   not come from beautiful destinations any more than the concept that money can buy happiness…

It’s easy to assume that if money can’t buy happiness, surely experiences can, but you can be in the most beautiful place on earth having some crazy experience, and not be happy. We tend to always be in search of the next big thing – the most beautiful beach or bigger mountain – without realizing that it is the journey there that matters, not the destination.

Happiness is hard to define of course, but I think happiness lies in your outlook and present state of mind. To be happy is to be in the present moment, no matter what you own or where you are.

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

23. “What gives value to travel is fear. It breaks down a kind of inner structure we all have.” – Elizabeth Benedict

24. “we must go beyond textbooks, go out into the bypaths and untrodden depths of the wilderness and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey.” – john hope franklin, 25. “though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us, or we find it not.” – ralph waldo emerson.

Walking on the globe with your head down will never open up all views and beautiful things to see. In order to enjoy traveling, you have to keep your mind and heart open, accept different cultures and traditions and simply try to adapt. Keep a positive mindset and you’ll see the beauty of the world.

26. “Real traveling is not about visiting places but about ‘re-visiting’ our inner-self.” – Sorrab Singha

Travel Quote 6

27. “Travel not to find yourself, but to remember who you’ve been all along.” – Unknown

Both of these travel quotes (#26 and #27) encapsulate that sometimes we travel to learn more about ourselves. A large aspect of traveling is, of course, visiting places, but sometimes you end up visiting parts of yourself too.

28. “Travelling expands the mind rarely.” – Hans Christian Andersen

29. “traveling outgrows its motives. it soon proves sufficient in itself. you think you are making a trip, but soon it is making you – or unmaking you.” – nicolas bouvier, 30. it is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end.” – ursula k. le guin, 31. “the best journeys are the ones that answer questions that at the outset you never even thought to ask.” – rick ridgeway.

Travel Quote 9

32. “You thought too hard. Same with travel. You can’t work too much at it, or it feels like work. You have to surrender yourself to the chaos. To the accidents.” –   Gayle Forman

This is one of my favorite travel quotes! It reminds me of something I read in the book  Shantaram , about an ex-convict on the run and his adventures in India. In the book, he was given similar advice: to surrender to India and accept his experience for what it was.

You have to surrender to the chaos and enjoy/endure the experiences as they come. While this is applicable to many aspects of life, it is definitely applicable to travel. You can’t try to force itineraries and plans or work hard to fulfill some high expectations in your mind. Doing so will only tire and disappoint you.

33. “Traveling is like flirting with life. It’s like saying, ‘I would stay and love you, but I have to go; this is my station.”  – Lisa St. Aubin de Teran

34. “travel has a way of making the world a much smaller place.” – janna graber, 35. “life is a journey that must be traveled no matter how bad the roads and accommodations.” –   oliver goldsmith, 36. “focus on the journey, not the destination. joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.” – greg anderson.

Travel Quote 7

37. “Travel can be one of the most rewarding forms of introspection.” – Lawrence Durrell

I can relate to this quote about travel quite well actually. The longer and more that I travel, the more I find myself self-analyzing and observing my own thought and emotional processes.

Traveling has a funny way of throwing you out into the world with the intention of discovering more about everything around you, only to realize you will discover far more about yourself. It is why traveling can be the most rewarding form of introspection.

38. “You develop a sympathy for all human beings when you travel a lot.” – Shakuntala Devi

39. “once you have traveled, the voyage never ends but is played out over and over again in the quietest chambers. the mind can never break off from the journey.” – pat conroy, 40. “travel and change of place impart new vigour to the mind.” – seneca, 41. “a man practices the art of adventure when he breaks the chain of routine and renews his life through reading new books, traveling to new places, making new friends, taking up new hobbies and adopting new viewpoints.” – wilfred peterson.

Travel Quote 8

42. “It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end.” – Ernest Hemingway

I can relate to these words quite a bit as I try to find the balance between preparing and planning for the future, reaching goals, and just enjoying the ride and staying present in the moment.

Having goals and an endpoint in sight is good; however, I don’t think it will be as satisfying if you don’t enjoy the moments that take you there. If you only focus on the destination you’ll miss everything that matters – the journey along the way.

43. “All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveller is unaware.” – Martin Buber

44. “life is a magical journey, so travel endlessly to unfold its profound and heart touching beauty.” – debasish mridha, 45. “good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter.”- izaak walton.

Whether it’s long, annoying bus trips, a shabby hostel or simply somewhere you don’t necessarily feel comfortable, it’s always better to have great company by your side. Going through the rough times together makes the whole experience more endurable.

46. “The pleasure we derive from journeys is perhaps dependent more on the mindset with which we travel than on the destination we travel to.” – Alain de Botton

Travel Quote 10

47. “With age, comes wisdom. With travel, comes understanding.” – Sandra Lake

I love this quote about traveling. With age, comes wisdom. Wisdom isn’t something you can read about, it is something you learn through experience. The same goes for travel. You can read and hear about places and people that are different than you, but sometimes it takes experiencing those places and meeting those people for yourself to truly understand them.

Travel Quote 11

52. “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s OK. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” – Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain will always be remembered for his adventurous spirit and ability to share some of the most remote and fascinating corners of this planet with the rest of the world. His words ring true. Travel is not pretty, and it’s definitely not always comfortable.

Sometimes you’ll deal with awful buses and missed flights, sleep in strange places, be confronted with challenging and stressful situations, or encounter experiences that break your heart. But that’s okay because the journey will make you stronger, and ultimately make you a better person.

53. “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” – Gustav Flaubert

54. “it is always sad to leave a place to which one knows one will never return. such are the melancholies du voyage: perhaps they are one of the most rewarding things about traveling.” – gustave flaubert, 55. “all travel has its advantages. if the passenger visits better countries, he may learn to improve his own. and if fortune carries him to worse, he may learn to enjoy it.” – samuel johnson, 56. “uncertainty and anticipation are the joys of travel.” –  ken hundert.

Travel Quote 14

Rather than investing in the latest technology, do yourself the favor and take yourself on a little trip. Clear your mind, learn new things and experience different cultures and people. You won’t regret it!

Travel Quote 12

62. “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

63. “travel expands the mind and fills the gap.” – sheda savage.

There are so many things to see and learn. The more you know, the more open your mindset and view will be. If you feel like you’re missing someone, invest in yourself and go on a trip to experience new things – you won’t regret it, we promise!

Travel Quote 15

67. “Travel is not really about leaving our homes, but leaving our habits.” – Pico Iyer

68. “when you’re traveling, you are what you are right there and then. people don’t have your past to hold against you. no yesterdays on the road.” – william least heat moon, 69. “i soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within.” – lillian smith, 70. “for my part, i travel not to go anywhere but to go. i travel for travel’s sake. the great affair is to move.” – robert louis stevenson, 71. “conventional wisdom tells us… we take our baggage with us. i’m not so sure. travel, at its best, transforms us in ways that aren’t always apparent until we’re back home. sometimes we do leave our baggage behind, or, even better, it’s misrouted to cleveland and is never heard from again.” – eric weiner.

Travel Quote 16

72.  “The journey is part of the experience – an expression of the seriousness of one’s intent. One doesn’t take the A train to Mecca.” – Anthony Bourdain

73. “travel is like love, mostly because it’s a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed. that is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.” – pico iyer, 74. “to my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – bill bryson, 75. “perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” – maya angelou, 76. “travel does what good novelists also do to the life of every day, placing it like a picture in a frame or a gem in its setting, so that the intrinsic qualities are made more clear. travel does this with the very stuff that everyday life is made of, giving to it the sharp contour and meaning of art.” – freya stark.

Travel Quote 17

77. “The true fruit of travel is perhaps the feeling of being nearly everywhere at home.” – Freya Stark

78. “you will, if you’re wise and know the art of travel, let yourself go on the stream of the unknown and accept whatever comes in the spirit in which the gods may offer it.” – freya stark, 79. “when you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. it is designed to make its own people comfortable.” – clifton fadiman.

This another one of the most important travel quotes, especially in nowadays time. When traveling, always keep your mind open, be respectful towards other people and try new things. Just because your believes, expectations and values work for you, doesn’t mean that it works for others too. Watch, experience and keep the critical thoughts to yourself if you don’t want to make enemies in a different country.
