The Java plugin is part of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and allows a browser to work with the Java platform to run Java applets to execute in the browser.

The Java plugin is enabled in a large number of browsers around the world and this makes it a target for malicious hackers. Any popular third-party plugin is subjected to the same kind of unwanted attention. The team behind Java have always taken security seriously and they will endeavor to quickly release an update to patch any serious security vulnerabilities found. This means the best way to minimize problems with the Java plugin is to make sure it is up-to-date with the latest release.

If you are really worried about the security of the Java plugin but still need to visit a popular website (e.g., online banking in some countries) that need the Java plugin enabled, then consider the two browser trick. You can use one browser (e.g., Internet Explorer) only when you want to use the websites using the Java plugin. For the rest of the time use another browser, (e.g., Firefox) with the Java plugin disabled.

Alternatively, you might find that you don't go to websites that use Java very often. In this case, you may prefer the option of disabling and enabling the Java plugin as needed. The instructions below will help you to set up your browser to disable (or enable) the Java plugin.

To turn on/turn off Java applets in the Firefox browser:

  • Select Tools -> Add-ons from the menu toolbar.
  • The Add-ons Manager window appears. Click on Plugins on the left-hand side.
  • In the list on the right select, the Java Plugin - the name of the plugin will vary depending on whether you are a Mac OS X or Windows user. On the Mac, it will be called Java Plug-in 2 for NPAPI Browsers or Java Applet Plug-in (depending on the operating system version). On Windows, it will be called Java (TM) Platform .
  • The button to the right of the selected plugin can be used to enable or disable the plugin.

Internet Explorer

To enable/disable Java in the Internet Explorer browser:

  • Select Tools -> Internet Options from the menu toolbar.
  • Click on the Security tab.
  • Click on the Custom level.. button.
  • In the Security Settings window scroll down the list until you see Scripting of Java applets.
  • Java applets are Enabled or Disabled depending on which radio button is checked. Click on the option you want and then click OK to save the change.

To enable/disable Java in the Safari browser:

  • Select Safari -> Preferences from the menu toolbar.
  • In the preferences, window click on the Security icon.
  • Make sure the Enable Java checkbox is checked if you want Java enabled or unchecked if you want it disabled.
  • Close the preferences window and the change will be saved.

To turn on/turn off Java applets in the Chrome browser:

  • Click on the wrench icon to the right of the address bar and choose Settings .
  • At the bottom click the link called Show advanced settings...
  • Under the Privacy, section click on Content settings...
  • Scroll down to the Plug-ins section and click on Disable individual plug-ins .
  • Look for the Java plugin and click on the Disable link to turn off or the Enable link to turn on.

To enable/disable the Java plugin in the Opera browser:

  • In the address bar type in "opera:plugins" and hit enter. This will display all the installed plugins.
  • Scroll down to the Java plugin and click on Disable to turn off the plugin or Enable to turn it on.

Enabling Java in Mac OS X

Last modified 9/21/2023

Before you begin

Security precaution.

As a security precaution, Java is disabled by default on some versions of OS X. To use Java web applications and websites, you must enable it.

Java Preferences (Mac OS X 10.7.3 and above)

You may not have a Java Preferences icon in your Utilities window. If you do not find a Java Preferences icon, you can skip this step

To enable Java through Java Preferences in Mac OS X, do the following:

  • Open Finder
  • If you do not have a  Java Preferences  icon here, skip these steps and enable Java in Safari   as described below.
  • Under the  General  tab, put a checkmark next to Enable applet plug-in and Web Start Applications.
  • Also, make sure all versions have a checkmark next to them.
  • Close  Java Preferences.

Java has now been enabled through Java Preferences.

Java in Safari

Note: safari versions 12 and below.

These instructions only work for Safari browser version 12 and below. Per Java.com, Apple has removed NPAPI plugin support for Safari version above 12.

To enable Java in Safari in OS X, do the following:

  •  Launch Safari
  • Click  Safari →  Preferences...
  • Click the Security  tab.
  • Check the option  Enable JavaScript.

Java is now enable in Safari.

How to install Java on a Mac

Getting started with Perlbrew

freephotocc via Pixabay CC0

In late May, Java celebrated its 25th anniversary, and to commemorate the occasion, developers around the world used the hashtag #MovedByJava to share their achievements, memories, and insights with the programming language.

My timeline: * 1999 Started learning Java * 2007 Created @grailsframework * 2008 Cofounded G2One * 2009 Acquired by SpringSource * 2015 Joined @ObjectComputing * 2018 Created @micronautfw / won @groundbreakers award * 2019 Became @Java_Champions Thank u @java ! #MovedByJava — Graeme Rocher (@graemerocher) May 21, 2020

Over the years, many technologies and trends have contributed to the Java stack's development, deployment, and ability to run multiple applications on standard application servers. Building container images for  Kubernetes enables Java developers to package and deploy microservices in multiple cloud environments rather than running several application servers on virtual machines.

With these technologies, the Java application stack has been optimized to run larger heaps and highly dynamic frameworks that can make decisions at runtime. Unfortunately, those efforts weren't good enough to make Java the preferred programming language for developers to implement cloud-native Java applications for serverless and event-driven platforms. Other languages filled in the space, particularly JavaScript, Python, and Go, with Rust and WebAssembly offering new alternatives.

Despite this competition, cloud-native Java is making an impact on cloud-centric software development. Luckily, new Java frameworks (e.g., Quarkus , Micronaut , and Helidon ) have recently broken through the challenges by offering smaller applications that compile faster and are designed with distributed systems in mind.

How to install Java on macOS

This future for Java development starts with more people installing and using Java. So I will walk through installing and getting started with the Java development environment on macOS. (If you are running Linux, please see Seth Kenlon's article How to install Java on Linux .)

Install OpenJDK from a Brew repository

Homebrew is the de-facto standard package manager for macOS. If you haven't installed it yet, Matthew Broberg's Introduction to Homebrew walks you through the steps.

Once you have Homebrew on your Mac, use the brew command to install OpenJDK , which is the open source way to write Java applications:

In just a few minutes, you will see:

Confirm that OpenJDK installed correctly with $ java -version :

The output confirms OpenJDK 14 (the latest version, as of this writing) is installed.

Install OpenJDK from a binary

If you are not a fan of package management and prefer managing Java yourself, there's always the option to download and install it manually.

I found a download link to the latest version on the OpenJDK homepage. Download the OpenJDK 14 binary:

Move to the directory where you downloaded the binary file and extract it:

Next, add Java to your PATH:

Also, add this to the path to your dotfiles, .bash_profile or .zshrc depending on what shell you are running. You can learn more about configuring the $PATH variable in How to set your $PATH variable in Linux .

Finally, verify your OpenJDK 14 installation:

Write your first Java microservice on a Mac

Now you are ready to develop a cloud-native Java application with OpenJDK stack on macOS. In this how-to, you'll create a new Java project on Quarkus that exposes a REST API using dependency injection.

You will need Maven , a popular Java dependency manager, to start. Install it from Maven's website or using Homebrew with brew install maven .

Execute the following Maven commands to configure a Quarkus project and create a simple web app:

Run the application:

You will see this output when the application starts:

Access the REST endpoint using the curl command:

Congratulations! You have quickly gone from not even having Java installed to building your first web application using Maven and Quarkus.

What to do next with Java

Java is a mature programming language that continues to grow in popularity through new frameworks designed for cloud-native application development.

If you are on the path toward building that future, you may be interested in more practical Quarkus development lessons or other modern frameworks. No matter what you're building, the next step is configuring your text editor. Read my tutorial on Writing Java with Quarkus in VS Code , then explore what else you can do.

Java plug-in no longer in Safari 12.0

After seeing an update for Safari today, I noted that it contained security updates, so I upgraded. After upgrading, however, I could no longer launch a Java applet for remote desktop access that I've used for years. The upgrade put Safari at version 12.0 (13606.2.11). There no longer is a Java plug-in under the list of available plug-ins that can be enabled/disabled for individual web sites. Specifically, it used to look like this:

User uploaded file

Now I now longer see Java in the list of plug-ins at the lower left. I re-installed JRE 8 Update 181 from Oracle to no avail. How are we supposed to run Java applets/applications from Safari in version 12.0 and later? My MacOS is Version 10.13.6 (17G65).

I don't think that's correct. I still see other plug-ins for Adobe Flash, Google Talk, etc. The screenshot below is from my newly installed Safari 12.0

What's the basis for your assertion that plug-ins are no longer supported?

Sep 18, 2018 8:57 AM in response to Eric Root

After reading more (see How to Use Java, Silverlight, and Other Plugins in Modern Browsers and https://jaxenter.com/clock-ticking-java-browser-plugin-will-deprecated-soon-1315 46.html ), Safari has been one of the longest browsers to support the NPAPI Java plug-in. That support seems to have ended with Safari 11. There are some alternatives according to the jaxenter.com article, but they require modifying the Java application.

I hope this is not too late, but I too depend on a Java plugin to connect to work. I found in another article that using "SeaMonkey" from the Mozilla group did the trick! https://www.seamonkey-project.org

It includes an email, newsgroup, and feed client too but I only use it as a browser for my Java-Plugin required applications. Now I am back online and saving Safari and all those other browsers I tried (with no avail) for other uses.

Hope it works for you -- I am recommending it to all my cohorts who telecommute with Macs to try it out.

I am having the same issue - in my case my Java app works but there I need to enable the "Unsafe" mode for the Java App and that has also disappeared.

I am assuming there is a workaround or the feature is hidden somewhere else....waiting...😕

I'm having the same problem with 5 different Macs within the family (iMac, 2 new MacBook Pros, 1 old MacBook Pro, and 1 old MacBook Air). The use a program that requires Java plugin support and now I can't use it after the upgrade to Safari 12.0. I tried everything and was finally able to wipe an old 2013 MacBook my kid used before she got her new Mac this year. It came back with Safari 10.12 after the install which allowed me to use the Java plugin. Unfortunately, I can't do that easily for the rest of my computers because the shipload of software and documents. Now the only device I can run Java on is old and heavy MacBook. I used the new MacBook or MacBook Air when I travel but now I can't do that. I have to carry that old computer just to use 1 program?

Apple has been controlling and now they are getting more and more controlling. If Java is NOT safe then a user should be able to use it on their own risk. All Apple has to do is give the warning!

This has to change.

If you have a backup, you can restore your computer to a backup made prior to installing Safari 12. Individual applications included as part of the OS can't be restored.

If you are running 10.13.6, boot into the Recovery Partition and reinstall the OS.

I am having the same problem. I was using Safari to access a remote desktop - which requires the Java plug-in.

Now I am blocked out and have no way of backing up or reinstalling the old Safari to enable this remote access. Does anyone know how to do that? And have a copy of the old safari? Until this is fixed I am locked out.

help is appreciated.

5 Installation of the JDK on macOS

This topic includes the following sections:

System Requirements for Installing the JDK on macOS

Determining the default jdk version on macos, installing the jdk on macos, uninstalling the jdk on macos, installation faq on macos platform.

The following are the system requirements for installing the JDK on macOS:

Any Intel-based computer running macOS.

Administrator privileges.

You cannot install Java for a single user. Installing the JDK on macOS is performed on a systemwide basis for all users. Administrator privileges are required to install the JDK on macOS.

When starting a Java application through the command line, the system uses the default JDK.

You can determine which version of the JDK is the default by entering java -version in a Terminal window. If the installed version is 11 Interim 0, Update 0, and Patch 0, then you see a string that includes the text 11 . For example:

To run a different version of Java, either specify the full path, or use the java_home tool. For example:

$ /usr/libexec/java_home -v 11 --exec javac -version

  • macOS x64 systems: jdk- 11 . interim.update.patch _macos-x64_bin.dmg OR jdk- 11 . interim.update.patch _macos-x64_bin.tar.gz
  • macOS aarch64 (64-bit ARM) systems: jdk- 11 . interim.update.patch _macos-aarch64_bin.dmg OR jdk- 11 . interim.update.patch _macos-aarch64_bin.tar.gz

Click Accept License Agreement .

  • From either the browser Downloads window or from the file browser, double-click the .dmg file to start it. A Finder window appears that contains an icon of an open box and the name of the .pkg file.
  • Double-click the JDK 11 .pkg icon to start the installation application. The installation application displays the Introduction window.
  • Click Continue . The Installation Type window appears.
  • Click Install . A window appears that displays the message: Installer is trying to install new software. Enter your password to allow this.
  • Enter the Administrator user name and password and click Install Software . The software is installed and a confirmation window is displayed.

Do not attempt to uninstall Java by removing the Java tools from /usr/bin . This directory is part of the system software and any changes will be reset by Apple the next time that you perform an update of the OS.

  • Go to /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines .

For example, to uninstall 11 Interim 0 Update 0 Patch 0:

$ rm -rf jdk- 11 .jdk

This topic provides answers for the following frequently asked questions about installing JDK on macOS computers.

1. How do I find out which version of Java is the system default?

When you run a Java application from the command line, it uses the default JDK. If you do not develop Java applications, then you do not need to worry about this. See Determining the Default JDK Version on macOS .

2. How do I uninstall Java?

See Uninstalling the JDK on macOS .

3. After installing Java for macOS 2012-006, can I continue to use Apple's Java 6 alongside the macOS JDK for Java 11 ?

If you want to continue to develop with Java 6 using command-line, then you can modify the startup script for your favorite command environment. For bash, use this:

$ export JAVA_HOME=`/usr/libexec/java_home -v 11`

Some applications use /usr/bin/java to call Java. After installing Java for macOS 2012-006, /usr/bin/java will find the newest JDK installed, and will use that for all of the Java-related command-line tools in /usr/bin . You may need to modify those applications to find Java 6, or contact the developer for a newer version of the application.

4. Can I restore Apple Java after uninstalling Oracle Java?

Go back to Apple Java using the following instructions:

Uninstall Oracle Java by deleting the plug-in file. From a command-line, enter:

$ sudo rm -rf "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin"

Create a symlink using the following command, entered on a single line:

$ sudo ln -s /System/Library/Java/Support/CoreDeploy.bundle/Contents/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin"

5. What happened to the Java Preferences app in Application Utilities?

The Java Preferences app was part of the Apple Java installation and is not used by Oracle Java. Therefore, macOS releases from Apple that do not include Apple Java will not include Java Preferences.
