Spiritual Locs

Whatever reason you may have for choosing to naturally loc your hair, whether spiritual or not, it may still be of interest to know the spiritual significance behind this historical look. Who knows, you may even find that you connect to some of its spiritual significance. Adding another layer behind the decisions we make can offer us more inspiration to support the choices and efforts we make.

Ancient Egypt

Our first stop is in ancient Egypt. Archaeologists have unearthed locs that remained intact in mummified Egyptian tombs. The ancient Pharaohs have been known to have locs, as seen in many uncovered statues and several other artifacts, such as loc’ed wigs. According to the Egyptians, locs represented a certain level of power and esteem for anyone who has been known or seen with loc’d hair.

It is from a tribe in Ethiopia where we have heard about locs acting as an antenna and receptor of mental energies, spiritual force, and physical strength. Locs represent a devotion to purity, and since the locs are found around the head and face it acts as a constant spiritual reminder to its owner that they own force, wisdom, and are expected to generate goodness onto themselves and others.

In Hindu culture Shiva was said to have “Tajaa,” twisted locs of hair. Many of Shiva’s followers took on locs to declare the commitment to their spiritual growth and to resist earthly desires and temptations. However, in India locs are often reserved for holy people and represents a certain spiritual devotion.

Rastafarian

According to rastafarian belief, locs are a part of the Nazarite vow, rooted in Leviticus which calls out against shaving the four corners of the head. Many believe locs are connected to the Lion of Judah. The lion is the king of the jungle and therefore, by linking locs to lions a certain power and independent strength is represented both physically and spiritually.

Eastern and Western Spiritualism

There are Eastern and Western religions who hold the belief that spiritual energies leave the body through the head and hair. Many of these religions believe that if the hair is loc’d it will keep the energy from exiting the body and will result in retaining more physical strength and spiritual energy. The head and hair act as a spiritual gateway from one realm to another. This could explain why locs can be found all across the world, from culture to culture.

Taking extra care and attention to locs, when done with patients and thoughtfulness, can evoke a heightened meditative state for many. While carefully paying attention and looking after all parts of our body can be meditative, knowing the spiritual power locs can have, and tuning in to locs as a source of power, can be a reboot and recharge of essential energy flow. Perhaps this invigorating force is what the ancient Ethiopians, Egypts and other tribes were so attuned to.

Understanding Locs as a Spiritual Practice

spiritual meaning of locs

Locs have long held deep spiritual meaning across cultures. For many, the choice to loc one’s hair represents a commitment to inner growth and self-discovery. But what makes this hairstyle so spiritually significant?

From Hindu yogis to African tribespeople, societies around the world have prized locs for their meditative and enlightening qualities. Today, locs remain a profound symbol of spiritual identity and values.

The Historical Roots of Locs as Spiritual Expression

Matted, twisted hair has carried spiritual meaning since ancient times. Hindu scriptures describe renunciate sadhus coiling their hair into thick dreadlocks, seeing them as a sign of their disregard for physical appearance and devotion to spiritual practice. Similarly, many Rastafarians grow locs as a symbol of their religious journey and rejection of Babylon’s expectations. Several ethnic groups in Africa – including the Maasai, Turkana, and Oromo – traditionally wear locs to indicate wisdom, maturity, and closeness to ancestors. Across continents and belief systems, deliberately tangled hair has long represented a commitment to the soul’s development.

Locs in African Spiritual Traditions

Throughout parts of Africa, locs signify respect for tradition and deep spiritual roots within a culture. The Himba people of Namibia see their long, red-hued locs as characteristic of their tribe and status within the community. For Maasai warriors, forming locs marks the transition from boyhood to manhood, their tangled coils denoting strength and courage. Ethiopians often refer to their locs as “sera” – a term meaning “net” – reflecting loc hair’s ability to capture one’s ancestry and identity. From Kenya to Angola, locs symbolize cultural pride, rites of passage, connection to elders, and spirituality embedded in heritage.

In many African cultures, the act of creating locs is a ceremonial occasion steeped in spiritual meaning. Family members gather to twist and roll the hair of younger tribe members when they come of age. Songs and stories are shared to pass down ancestral wisdom. This revered ritual welcomes initiates into new community roles and responsibilities, their dreadlocked hair reflecting their maturation.

Hindu Sadhus and the Mysticism of Their Matted Hair

Since ancient times, many Hindu holy men have worn their hair in dreadlocks as a sign of their otherworldly focus and ascetic lifestyle. Known as sadhus or swamis, these monks twist their hair while meditating – a practice thought to stimulate enlightenment. Their coils, called “jata,” capture spiritual energy during meditation, much like an antenna channels signals. Loc’d hair marks sadhus’ freedom from societal norms and devotion to self-knowledge. For these ascetics, dreadlocks represent a profound mystical journey where inner realizations matter far more than physical appearance.

Hindu scriptures explain the spiritual significance behind sadhus’ matted locks. The coils are said to amplify psychic energy and yogic insight, aiding communion with the Divine. Dreadlocks also represent breaking free of ego and physical vanity. By neglecting external beauty standards, sadhus can focus on meditation and self-realization. Their choice of loc’d hair reflects high spiritual discipline and conquest of materialism.

The Mindful Journey of Locs

For those who choose loc’d hair today, the journey still provides opportunity for self-reflection and spiritual growth. Starting locs requires patience and care – first twisting or rolling the hair into coils, then allowing it to naturally mat and mesh over time. The loc process teaches surrender – embracing the uncertainty of how they’ll turn out and your changing identity within. Loc hair’s need for gentle, mindful maintenance strengthens your sense of connection and presence. Each wash and twist session grounds you in the moment, encouraging stillness and focus.

Locs as an Outward Embodiment of Your Inner Life

Many who wear locs today see them as an extension of their soul. Loc’d hair reflects the interweaving of experiences into wisdom, expressing your intricate inner landscape. Locs symbolize nonconformity and movement to your own rhythm and values. Their organic evolution mirrors your personal development. Just as our loc’d coils take time to form, spiritual maturity unfolds gradually. With its resistance to being tamed, dreadlocked hair conveys freedom – to change, grow, flow as the spirit moves you. Your locs’ journey parallels and externalizes your inner transformation.

Loc hairstyles reveal the uniqueness within each person. No two heads of locs are exactly alike. This mirrors how our inner lives are singular and can’t be forced into a mold. Locs model the value of honoring your authentic spirit. By celebrating the one-of-a-kind texture and energy of your locs, you affirm your right to self-define regardless of mainstream ideals.

Caring for Locs as Spiritual Ritual

The ongoing care of locs creates opportunities to cultivate mindfulness. Setting aside regular time to retwist or palm roll your locs brings you fully into each moment. Massaging oils into your hair becomes an act of self-love and therapeutic relaxation. Adjusting your locs lets you intimately reconnect with your roots, physically and ancestrally. Each maintenance session provides space for reflection on where you’ve been and where you’re heading. Honoring your spiritual identity through loc care rituals keeps you grounded in self-knowledge.

Many view washing, moisturizing, and styling their locs as a meditative ritual. These practices require focused presence, much like traditional meditation. Mindfully sensing each loc coil connects you to your highest self. Loc maintenance can also facilitate prayer and affirmations, aligning your outer and inner worlds. The patience and reverence of loc care allows spiritual insights to emerge.

Locs have never been just a hairstyle – they embody deep spiritual meaning passed down through cultures. Growing locs represents choosing an inward journey, one of self-acceptance and soul-searching. Maintaining them demands mindful presence, while their organic nature mirrors personal evolution. Locs reflect nonconformity and freedom to walk your own path. By honoring the spiritual roots beneath your locs, you stay connected to cultural history, living tradition, and your authentic self.

Though locs hold unique significance for people of color, their spiritual symbolism transcends culture. Locs represent the universal human needs for purpose, community, and inner peace. By wearing dreadlocked hair, we reconnect to timeless spiritual practices like meditation and closeness with nature. Loc’d journeys teach surrender to life’s uncertainties and acceptance of our ever-changing selves. For many, locs remain sacred – now as in ancient times.

In this article, we will explore the ten powerful meanings of locs, as well as provide additional content to give you a deeper understanding of this captivating subject.

The Spiritual Journey

Symbolism of locs in spiritual journeys.

Locs, or dreadlocks, hold deep spiritual symbolism in various cultures. These tangled knots of hair are often associated with a profound spiritual journey. Just like the process of growing and maintaining locs requires patience and dedication, so does the cultivation of one’s inner self. The journey of locs serves as a reminder to embrace the ups and downs of life, understanding that growth and enlightenment come from within.

Connection with inner self and higher power

The journey of locs is not just about physical transformation; it is also a journey towards understanding oneself on a deeper level. By nurturing our hair and allowing it to naturally form into locs, we establish a strong connection with our inner self. The patience and care involved in cultivating and maintaining locs mirror the commitment and discipline required to connect with a higher power.

Significance in personal growth and enlightenment

Locs act as a visual representation of personal growth and enlightenment. As the hair grows and matures, so do we as individuals. Each loc represents a chapter of our lives, with all its experiences, emotions, and lessons. In the process of growing locs, we learn to let go of societal expectations and allow our true selves to thrive and flourish. The transformative power of locs mirrors our own spiritual growth, leading us towards enlightenment.

Strength and Resilience

Symbolic representation of strength.

Locs serve as a powerful symbol of strength and resilience. The growth and maintenance of locs require dedication, patience, and perseverance. These characteristics are reminiscent of the strength we possess within ourselves. Just like the tangled knots of locs, we too have the ability to overcome challenges and hardships with determination and resilience.

Overcoming challenges and hardships

The journey of cultivating and maintaining locs often presents challenges and hardships. Haircare rituals, such as washing and styling, can be time-consuming and require commitment. However, these challenges allow us to develop patience, discipline, and perseverance. By overcoming these obstacles, we prove to ourselves and others that we are capable of enduring and thriving in the face of adversity.

Empowering oneself through locs

Locs empower individuals to embrace their natural beauty and authentic self. In a world that often emphasizes conformity to societal standards, locs offer a rebellion against these expectations. By choosing to wear locs, we choose to honor our unique identity and celebrate our strength and resilience. Locs become a statement of self-acceptance and show the world that we are proud of who we are and how far we have come.

Rebellion Against the System

Defiance of societal norms and expectations.

Locs challenge societal norms and expectations, particularly in Western cultures where straight and—often—Eurocentric beauty standards prevail. By embracing this unconventional hairstyle, we actively defy these norms, choosing to express our individuality and authenticity. Locs remind us that our worth isn’t dictated by mainstream beauty standards, encouraging us to break free from societal pressures and embrace our unique beauty.

Challenging Eurocentric beauty standards

Eurocentric beauty standards have long dominated the fashion and beauty industries, marginalizing and excluding people of diverse cultural backgrounds. Through locs, we reject the notion that only certain hair types or styles are considered beautiful, reaffirming the importance of inclusivity and diversity.

Embracing identity and cultural heritage

Locs provide a powerful platform for individuals to reclaim their identity and cultural heritage. In societies where assimilation and erasure of cultural identities are prevalent, choosing to wear locs becomes an act of resistance and preservation. By embracing our roots, we empower ourselves and inspire others to do the same.

Religious Dedication

From the Rastafarian movement to Hinduism and many other spiritual traditions, locs are seen as a visual representation of religious dedication.

Devotion and commitment to faith

For individuals who observe their faith with the guidance of religious texts, growing locs is often a way to demonstrate devotion and commitment to their beliefs. The journey of locs becomes intertwined with the journey of one’s faith, with each lock representing a step towards spiritual growth and enlightenment. The dedication and patience required to maintain locs align with the devotion and commitment to one’s religious practices.

Representation of spiritual beliefs

Locs are not merely a hairstyle; they represent the spiritual beliefs of individuals who choose to wear them. The physical manifestation of locs serves as a symbolic connection to a higher power or spiritual realm. Each loc becomes a channel through which divine energy flows, creating a tangible link between the individual and their spiritual beliefs. Locs become a visual reminder of the sacred bond between the physical and the metaphysical.

Cultural Significance

Role of locs in different cultures.

The cultural significance of locs spans across various communities, each with their unique symbolism attached to this distinctive hairstyle. In African cultures, locs have been worn for centuries as a celebration of identity and heritage. In India and other South Asian countries, locs have religious connotations and are associated with spiritual beliefs. Locs can also represent rebellion and resistance in many subcultures, challenging mainstream ideas of beauty and conformity.

Preservation of cultural heritage

Through the wearing of locs, individuals actively preserve and honor their cultural heritage. In a globalized world where cultural traditions can sometimes be diluted or forgotten, locs become a powerful statement of identity. By embracing this hairstyle, individuals proudly showcase their roots and foster a sense of belonging to a larger cultural community. Locs serve as a reminder of the storied history and rich traditions that continue to shape our cultural tapestry.

Connection with ancestral roots

Locs provide a tangible connection to our ancestral roots. Just as our hair grows and intertwines, so do the generations that came before us, leaving an indelible mark on who we are today. By wearing locs, we honor our ancestors and their enduring legacies. Locs become a physical representation of the resilience, wisdom, and strength passed down through generations, reminding us that we are part of a collective journey woven across time and space.

Hinduism and Lord Shiva

Symbolic association with lord shiva.

In Hinduism, locs are deeply associated with Lord Shiva, the deity known as “The Destroyer” and “The Transformer.” Lord Shiva is often depicted with matted, flowing hair, symbolic of his unconventionality and detachment from societal norms. As devotees of Lord Shiva, many Hindus choose to grow locs as a way to emulate his qualities and honor his divine presence in their lives.

Representing power and devotion

For Hindus who grow locs, each strand represents a symbolic connection to Lord Shiva’s immense power and devotion. Just as Lord Shiva’s hair flows freely and defies societal conventions, locs become a visual representation of liberation from worldly attachments. Growing and maintaining locs become an act of surrender to a higher power and a commitment to living a life aligned with spiritual principles.

Spiritual meaning in Hindu mythology

In Hindu mythology, locs are believed to hold spiritual significance. It is said that Lord Shiva’s locs contain all the knowledge and wisdom of the universe. The entangled strands represent the countless paths to enlightenment, each leading to the ultimate truth. By growing and wearing locs, Hindus embody the spiritual journey and seek to tap into the profound wisdom and divine understanding that Lord Shiva symbolizes.

Rastafarianism and African Roots

Importance of locs in rastafarian culture.

The growth and maintenance of locs among Rastafarians reflect their commitment to living a life true to their cultural identity and spiritual principles.

Resistance against western influence

Growing locs in Rastafarian culture is also an act of resistance against Western cultural and societal influences. Rastafarians reject the notion that straightened, Eurocentric hairstyles are the epitome of beauty and choose to proudly display their natural, textured hair. Locs become a statement against assimilation and an affirmation of their African roots, challenging the dominant narratives that perpetuate eurocentrism.

Celebrating African heritage and identity

For Rastafarians, wearing locs becomes a powerful celebration of African heritage and identity. Locs serve as a visual manifestation of their cultural pride and a way to embody their connection to the African diaspora. By embracing this hairstyle, Rastafarians seek to reclaim their history, strengthen their community, and inspire others to embrace their African roots with love and pride.

Rejecting Eurocentric Beauty Standards

Challenging western ideals of beauty.

Wearing locs challenges Western ideals of beauty that predominantly value straight, glossy hair. Eurocentrism has long perpetuated the notion that certain hair textures are more desirable and acceptable, often marginalizing individuals with natural, textured hair. By embracing locs, individuals actively challenge these standards, asserting that all hair types are beautiful and deserving of celebration.

Embracing natural beauty and diversity

Locs promote the celebration and embrace of natural beauty and diverse hair textures. Each loc tells a story of individuality, uniqueness, and diversity. By rejecting the need to conform to mainstream beauty standards, individuals foster a culture of acceptance, encouraging others to love and appreciate their natural selves. Locs become a symbol of empowerment, reminding us all of the beauty that lies in embracing our authentic selves.

Empowering individuals to love themselves

By defying Eurocentric beauty standards, locs empower individuals to embrace and love themselves unapologetically. Locs symbolize self-acceptance, self-love, and self-expression. Through this hairstyle, individuals reclaim their power and redefine beauty on their own terms. Locs encourage a shift in societal narratives, prompting others to question narrow beauty standards and appreciate the diverse range of beauty that exists in the world.

Self-Expression and Identity

Locs as a form of personal expression.

Locs offer a unique avenue for personal expression. Each individual’s locs are intricately detailed and distinct, reflecting their personal journeys, values, and identities. Embodying cultural and personal identity

Growing and wearing locs is a way for individuals to embody their cultural and personal identities. Locs serve as a visible marker of one’s heritage, traditions, and values. Whether it is an African, Afro-Caribbean, or South Asian background, locs become an extension of cultural heritage, reinforcing a sense of belonging and pride in one’s roots. Locs allow individuals to share a part of their identity with the world, fostering understanding and appreciation for diverse cultures.

The Process Of Growing And Maintaining Locs

Symbolism behind the patience and dedication required.

Growing and maintaining locs is not only a physical process but also a spiritual journey that encompasses various meanings and symbolism. One of the key aspects of this journey is the patience and dedication required to grow and maintain locs.

Here are some key points to understand the symbolism behind the patience and dedication involved in the locs journey:

  • Embracing the natural process:  Locs require time and patience to grow and mature. This mirrors the importance of embracing the natural pace of life and not rushing or forcing things. Just like locs, personal growth and development take time and cannot be rushed.
  • Cultivating inner strength:  The process of growing and maintaining locs can be challenging at times. It requires commitment, resilience, and dedication. These qualities can also be seen as a reflection of one’s inner strength and determination to overcome obstacles on the spiritual path.
  • Symbolic of commitment to self:  Standing as a visual representation of one’s commitment to their spiritual journey, maintaining locs requires consistent care and attention. This commitment can extend beyond physical appearance and serve as a constant reminder of one’s dedication to personal growth and spiritual development.
  • Embracing the beauty of imperfection:  Locs naturally become twisted and unruly as they mature. Rather than trying to control or perfect them, embracing their unique form is symbolic of accepting and embracing the imperfections within oneself. It signifies surrendering to the natural flow of life, trusting that things will unfold as they are meant to.
  • Honoring ancestral connection:  In many cultures, locs hold spiritual and ancestral significance. The patience and dedication involved in growing and maintaining locs can be seen as a means of honoring one’s roots and ancestral connections. The Spiritual Significance Of Letting Go And Embracing Change During The Locs Journey

Here are some key points to understand the spiritual significance of letting go and embracing change during the locs journey:

  • Symbolic of shedding old beliefs:  Growing and maintaining locs can represent letting go of old patterns, beliefs, and attachments that no longer serve one’s spiritual growth. Just as locs transform with time, the journey allows individuals to release old limitations and embrace new ways of being.
  • Surrendering to the present moment:  The process of growing locs teaches individuals to surrender control and live in the present moment. As locs develop and change over time, it reminds us of the impermanence of life and the importance of embracing each moment with openness and acceptance.

  • Letting go of societal expectations:  Growing locs often challenges societal norms and expectations of traditional hair standards. Maintaining locs involves more than just letting the hair grow naturally. Various rituals and practices allow individuals to nurture and care for their locs.

  • Regular cleansing:  Keeping locs clean is essential for their health and growth. Regularly washing locs with natural, residue-free shampoos helps remove dirt, buildup, and promote healthy scalp conditions.
  • Retwisting and palm rolling:  To maintain neat and well-defined locs, individuals often retwist or palm roll their locs regularly. This process involves twisting or rolling the new growth at the root to merge it seamlessly with the existing locs.
  • Moisturizing and conditioning:  Just like any other hair type, locs require moisture to prevent dryness and breakage. Applying natural oils or moisturizing creams allows individuals to keep their locs hydrated and nourished.
  • Scalp massages:  Massaging the scalp stimulates blood circulation and promotes healthy hair growth. Regular scalp massages can be incorporated into loc maintenance routines to enhance the overall health and vitality of the locs.
  • Intentional adornment:  Adorning locs with beads, shells, or other decorative elements can add a personal touch and reflect individual creativity and spirituality. This intentional adornment can serve as a form of self-expression and celebration of one’s loc journey.

Locs As A Symbol Of Spiritual Growth And Transformation

Locs, also known as dreadlocks, have a deep spiritual meaning that goes beyond their aesthetically pleasing appearance. The process of growing locs is a journey of self-discovery and personal transformation.

From the moment the decision is made to embark on this spiritual path, each stage of locs represents a unique phase in the individual’s spiritual growth.

Let’s delve into the significance of locs as a symbol of spiritual growth and transformation.

Moving Through Different Stages Of Locs

Growing and maintaining locs can be seen as a metaphor for life’s stages. Just as we progress through different phases in our personal development, locs also go through distinct stages.

Each stage comes with its own challenges and rewards, reflecting the growth and evolution of the individual pursuing this spiritual journey.

Here are the key stages of locs:

  • Baby locs:  The beginning of the locs journey, symbolizing the birth of a new spiritual path. Baby locs require patience and nurturing, just like the initial stages of personal growth. It is a time of vulnerability and laying the foundation for the transformation that lies ahead.
  • Teenage locs:  As locs mature, they enter the adolescent stage. This phase brings excitement and experimentation, representing the exploration of one’s spirituality. Teenage locs may be unruly, just as the spiritual journey can feel chaotic at times. It’s a crucial period of self-discovery and finding one’s unique spiritual voice.
  • Mature locs:  Gradually, locs reach maturity, signifying the culmination of spiritual growth. Mature locs are strong, well-formed, and full of wisdom. Similarly, individuals who have traversed the spiritual path experience a profound sense of self-awareness, inner peace, and enlightenment.

Celebrating Milestones And Spiritual Growth

Throughout the locs journey, milestones mark significant moments of spiritual growth and transformation. These celebratory occasions serve as reminders of the progress made and the lessons learned along the way.

Here are some milestones commonly celebrated within the locs community:

  • Rooting ceremony:  At the beginning of the locs journey, many individuals partake in a rooting ceremony. This ritual symbolizes the commitment to spiritual growth and the deepening connection to one’s roots. It is a sacred initiation into the transformative power of locs.
  • First-time styling:  As locs mature, individuals often reach a point where they can explore various hairstyles and adornments. This newfound creativity reflects the blossoming of their spiritual journey. Styling locs in intricate patterns or adding spiritual symbols can enhance the connection between the physical and spiritual realms.
  • Anniversary of locs:  Each year of locs growth can be commemorated as an anniversary. This allows individuals to reflect on their progress and express gratitude for the transformative experiences they’ve encountered. It’s a time to acknowledge the challenges overcome and the spiritual insights gained.
  • Sharing knowledge:  As locs become a symbol of spiritual wisdom, individuals often feel compelled to share their knowledge and experiences with others. This act of selflessness contributes to the collective spiritual growth of the community and fosters a sense of unity and interconnectedness.

Locs hold a profound spiritual significance, representing a journey of self-discovery and personal transformation. As individuals move through the different stages of locs, they navigate various challenges and celebrate milestones that mark their spiritual growth.

Locs 101: Everything You Need to Know

  • Caring for Locs

Dreads, dreadlocks, locs, regardless of the name, you could call them the original hairstyle.

The origin of the term “dreadlock” has been widely discussed. Some say the term came from slavery, when slave ship owners would look at enslaved Africans’ matted hair and say they looked “dreadful.” However, etymologists say the word “dreadlock” didn’t show up until 1960; with some saying it originates from the Rastafarian culture. The rastafari grew their hair to mimic a lion’s mane as a religious nod to the Lion of Judah, the symbol of a powerful leader.

The earliest evidence of locs dates back to India in 1800BC. The first evidence of the style in Africa came around 500 BC. While locs have been around for millenia, in modern times the style saw a resurgence in popularity in the 1970s and we haven’t looked back since.

Unlike wash-and-gos, two-strand twists, cornrows, or any other natural style, locs take dedication, patience, and TIME. Ask any of your loc’d friends and they’ll talk about their “journey” and that’s exactly what it is. Making the decision to loc one’s hair can be cultural, spiritual, or purely for aesthetic reasons; either way there are a few things to know about locs, before you take the plunge.

  • What are they?
  • Four ways to start them
  • How to care for them

[Oh by the way  👋🏾,  check out our short film, Pretty Shouldn’t Hurt , is a must-watch, even if you wear locs.]

What are locs?

Per Wikipedia , “locs are ropelike strands of hair formed by matting or braiding hair.” There are several different types of locs.

Traditional

Larger size locs, sometimes grown as freeform locs.

Sister Locs

A trademarked pattern style loc, about half the size of traditional locs.

Extremely small locs that resemble strands of hair, usually installed using two strand twists.

A temporary style, using braiding and marley hair.

Each one of these styles has a unique look and “feel” to them and depending on what you want, you’ll start the locs in different ways.

Starting Locs (traditional methods)

Aside from faux locs, many begin their locs on short to medium length natural hair and there are several ways to start the loc process. Here are the most common ways:

Organically/Freeform

This is the easiest way to start your locs, especially if you’re going for a freeform style (think J. Cole). You can start this process by not detangling your hair when you wash it. Simply, wash, condition, and moisturize but NEVER comb or brush your hair. Alternatively, if your hair is on the short side; you can use a curl sponge to create small free form locs that will begin to train your hair. The key to this method is PATIENCE.

Note: Those with tighter curls and coils will see their hair loc-up faster than those with looser curls.

The Queen Po walks us through the process.

Princess Platinumm shows us how to wash freeform locs.

Starting With Two Strand Twists

This method is probably one of the most popular and recommended ways to start your loc journey. Start by putting your hair in two strand twists but make sure you like the parting and size of the twists. One of the great things about starting locs this way is in the beginning you can change your mind. You can change the parting, change the sizing, or decide you don’t want locs and simply take out the twists. If you stay on it, the lines in your twists should disappear within one year.

Starting Locs With Braids

This method is similar to the two strand twist method with a few differences. Those that start with braids tend to have less shrinkage overall, also the loc is more flexible and less frizzy. However, the braiding pattern can remain very visible after years of wear.

Starting your locs with comb coils is almost always done by a loctician. Some will use gel and wax, while others suggest not using anything but moisturizer. The loctician will section your hair and use a rattail comb to tightly coil the hair, officially starting your journey.

How do you take care of locs?

Once you’ve started, you’ll need a few tips on taking care of your locs, especially in the beginning. You’ll often hear advice about not putting water on your locs for the first two weeks after they’re installed; however, depending on which method you used, you could use water sooner than later.

WestIndieRay used a mixture of salt water and regular water soon after beginning her loc journey with two-strand twists, claiming it caused her hair to loc up faster.

If you’re worried about your locs unraveling, especially if you have comb coils, Callmetoocute has a great way to wash your locs with minimal manipulation.

To moisturize your locs use leave-in conditioner spray or light oils; heavy products can cause build up and odor. Hallease has a great DIY loc moisturizer with ways to customize as the seasons change:

After a month or two it will be time to retwist your locs and you’ll be faced with another decision to make in your journey: palm rolling or interlocking.

Palm Rolling vs. Interlocking

Palm rolling is exactly what it sounds like; to retwist your locs you use moisturizer, locking spray (optional), banana clips, and your hands to roll them. The main thing to remember is to roll the hair in the same direction. (AKA: Don’t rub your palms like you would in front of a campfire, rub them in one direction) Braids By Rah has a great video of how its done:

  • could potentially cause bald spots from over-manipulation
  • tendency to frizz or unravel

Frequency: once a month

Interlocking is different; it’s basically like sewing your loc together. You need a lightweight moisturizer and a crochet hook or interlocking tool. To interlock your locs you’ll need to follow a pattern and never “sew” the same hole twice. Glamnaturallife has a really good tutorial on how to do interlocking:

  • maintenance lasts longer
  • will work with all hair textures
  • better for smaller/thinner locs
  • if done incorrectly could cause holes and loc damage

Frequency: 6-8 weeks

No matter which method you choose, the way you start, maintain, and grow your locs will be all your own. Like we said before, this is a journey that takes time and patience, but is very rewarding. Did we mention the style possibilities are endless?

Still not sure if you want to start your locs? Here are a few women that talk about why they started their locs.

Explore the Spiritual Meaning of Dreadlocks: A Journey Within

AJ

Dreadlocks are more than just a style accessory. They give people a path to greater self-awareness, personal development, and a closer bond with God. They have deep cultural and spiritual symbolism. In this post, we’ll examine the profound Spiritual Meaning of Dreadlocks. We are going to look at the mystical, metaphysical, and holy bond associated with dreadlocks. Join us as we explore the spiritual growth and metamorphosis associated with growing dreadlocks through an introspective journey.

Key Takeaways:

Dreadlocks, sometimes called “locs,” are hairstyles that are matted or braided. Numerous civilizations throughout history have worn dreadlocks. They are ancient in origin.

Dreadlocks are assumed to have originated in Africa, particularly among Jamaican Rastafarians, though their precise origins are unknown. The Rastafari movement, which emerged in the 1930s, saw dreadlocks as a way to embrace African culture and reject Western ideas of beauty.

Dreadlocks have been worn throughout history by many other societies. Many Sadhus, or ancient Indian holy men, wore dreadlocks as a symbol of their commitment to their spiritual path. Dreadlocks were believed to be worn by priests as a symbol of their elevated consciousness and intimacy with the divine in ancient Egypt.

Dreadlocks are worn by many cultures and subcultures worldwide these days, and each one adds a unique flair to the haircut. Dreadlocks have been an important way for people to express their cultural and personal identities for millennia. Their past is rich in culture.

The Dreadlocks’ Symbolism

Dreadlocks, also referred to as “locs,” have a rich history of symbolic and spiritual significance. From a spiritual standpoint, they might signify a link to the divine; from a cultural viewpoint, they can indicate a connection to one’s heritage and ancestors.

Dreadlock symbolism can be interpreted in a variety of ways depending on the cultural or religious context in which they are worn. The tightly coiled hair may be interpreted differently by different people. Some may see it as a sign of tenacity and strength, while others may see it as evidence of a person’s dedication to their values.

Depending on the social, cultural, or religious context in which they are worn, there are several ways to understand the symbolism of dreadlocks. Different people may interpret the tightly coiled hair in different ways. While some might interpret it as a sign of strength and perseverance, others might see it as proof of a person’s commitment to their moral principles.

Furthermore, dreadlocks are associated with a mystical meaning related to the body’s chakras. Each lock is said to represent a different chakra or energy point, and the locs may both contain and channel spiritual energy.

Dreadlocks have many spiritual meanings throughout nations and spiritual traditions, but the concept of authenticity and connection—both inside oneself and with the divine—remains a recurrent theme.

The Dreadlocks’ Spiritual Connection

Dreadlocks can help one’s spiritual path and communication with the divine; they’re not just a trendy hairstyle. Growers and dreadlock-maintainers alike can forge deeply meaningful spiritual connections.

Dreadlocks have spiritual significance because they can represent attributes such as patience, endurance, and commitment. Dreadlock development and maintenance require patience because it may take months or even years for the locks to reach their full maturity. One’s sense of inner peace and tranquility can be strengthened in many aspects of life by practicing patience.

Furthermore, the effort needed to keep up dreadlocks could serve as a powerful reminder of one’s dedication to spiritual growth. Taking care of one’s hair can become a spiritual practice in and of itself, promoting a closer connection to the divine and oneself.

Many people also claim to have a stronger sense of spirituality and a closer relationship with the divine when they wear dreadlocks. A person’s hairstyle can serve as a visual representation of their spiritual journey and a reminder that they are a part of something greater than themselves.

Accepting Your Dreadlocks as a Spiritual Path

For many people, growing and taking care of dreadlocks can lead to a profound spiritual journey of self-discovery and inner growth. Adopting dreadlocks as a spiritual path can help you access their inherent power and significance.

Dreadlock growth and maintenance can promote spiritual and personal development. Growing and maintaining dreadlocks requires patience, devotion, and commitment; these qualities can also aid in the development of tenacity, discipline, and resilience.

Dreadlocks can appear as a physical manifestation of an internal transformation as they grow and change. Twisted and interwoven hair can symbolize a sense of cohesion and oneness, reminding people that they are inherently a part of everything.

Drastic spiritual adventures can also lead to a deeper understanding of oneself and the universe. In order to build a bond with their ancestors and traditions, people who choose this hairstyle might take inspiration from their spiritual and cultural origins.

Dreadlocks’ Cultural and Spiritual Significance

Dreadlocks are more than just a hairstyle; they have cultural and spiritual significance. Dreadlocks are associated with a holiness that goes beyond outward appearances and has deep cultural and spiritual connections to many different countries and traditions around the world.

Dreadlocks are regarded as a type of cultural identity in many cultures, signifying a link to one’s ancestry and roots. For example, dreadlocks are seen as a sign of spiritual development and wisdom in African cultures, where they are frequently connected to holy men and women. In a similar vein, dreadlocks are highly revered in Rastafarian culture, where they symbolize a spiritual path leading to oneness with Jah (God) and liberation, peace, and love.

Apart from its significance in culture, dreadlocks are perceived as a spiritual declaration that symbolizes a closer relationship with God. Some people think that growing dreadlocks could facilitate their ability to connect with a higher power and gain access to their inner wisdom and intuition. Therefore, dreadlocks can help people transform spiritually and grow, serving as a catalyst.

Meaning of Dreadlocks

The Dreadlocks’ Metaphysical Significance

Even though dreadlocks are usually dismissed as merely a hairstyle, they can have more profound metaphysical and spiritual connotations.

One metaphysical interpretation of dreadlocks is that they are a tangible embodiment of spiritual force. The process of creating the coiled locks, which represent the movement of energy throughout the body, can be seen as a tangible representation of spiritual and internal development. In this way, dreadlocks can serve as a concrete reminder to stay in touch with one’s spiritual nature and higher awareness.

Dreadlocks’ spiritual significance is further demonstrated by the way they relate to cosmic energy. Similar to a spring’s coils, dreadlocks are thought to hold the energy of the universe, enabling a person’s spiritual journey and establishing a connection to the divine source. Many people have theorized that the coiled locks could act as antennae for the transmission and reception of spiritual energy.

The Holy Ceremonies and Customs of Dreadlocks

Spirituality and dreadlocks have long been connected in a number of international contexts. Draggalos represent sacred rituals and customs from various religions, including Rastafarianism and Hinduism.

In many cultures, dreadlock maintenance and care are considered holy rites and customs.

Dreadlock development and growth require particular attention and care because they are a spiritual rite in Rastafarianism. Using natural products like oils and herbal combinations is a common ritual in the Rastafarian culture.

In Hinduism, developing Jata is a process that requires a great deal of patience and self control. This practice is often associated with abstinence from material possessions and asceticism. Since natural products are believed to promote purity and spiritual growth, they are also widely used.

Dreadlocks and Spiritual Practices

Growing and taking care of dreadlocks could be a spiritual endeavor for some people. Many individuals who embrace dreadlocks as a means of spiritual expression also incorporate other practices, like meditation and visualization, into their daily routines. These traditions are supposed to strengthen dreadlocks’ transforming potential and spiritual connection.

Natural products like herbs and essential oils are also highly favored by those who see dreadlocks as a spiritual journey. These items are thought to encourage spiritual development, purification, and healing.

Accepting the holiness and spirituality associated with dreadlocks may lead to a deeper understanding of oneself and the cosmos. One can begin a journey of self-transformation and establish a connection with the divine by embracing sacred rituals and spiritual practices.

The Dreadlocks’ Divine Significance

Dreadlocks are more than just trendy hairstyles; they have profound spiritual significance in many cultures and traditions. Keeping your hair in dreadlocks and growing them out can be a good way to connect with higher realms and embody spiritual essence.

Many believe that because dreadlocks act as a heavenly incarnation, people with them can connect with the divine and access their inner spiritual power. By growing and taking care of their dreadlocks, people can express their spiritual nature and forge closer spiritual bonds.

For some people, sporting dreadlocks is a concrete representation of their personal development and transformation. Dreadlock growth and love could be a powerful source of inspiration for developing one’s own inner strength and spirituality.

Whether or not dreadlocks are interpreted as a symbol of spirituality or a conduit to other dimensions, they hold heavenly significance. Accept the sacred and spiritual aspects of dreadlocks, and embark on a journey of divine connection and spiritual embodiment of your own.

Transformation of Spirit via Dreadlocks

Dreadlocks have long been associated with a spiritual journey toward self-reflection and transformation. Growing and keeping dreadlocks can be seen as a form of self-empowerment, allowing a person to embrace their true selves and establish a spiritual connection.

Numerous spiritual transformations can result from having dreadlocks. Because their dreadlocks are a physical manifestation of their spirituality, some people may feel a strengthening of their spiritual practice. Others might discover that as they confront and surpass their fears and limitations, the path focuses more on introspection and personal growth.

One of the most significant aspects of the spiritual experience is the sense of connection and community that dreadlocks may foster. People who have chosen to wear dreadlocks as a spiritual expression can form very strong bonds with one another, providing a network of people who are all on the same path.

No matter how big or little the spiritual transformation brought about by dreadlocks, the journey is always rewarding. By accepting the cultural and spiritual value of dreadlocks, people may tap into a rich legacy that has been cherished for years.

In conclusion, dreadlocks serve as a tangible embodiment of concepts and forces found in metaphysics and are linked to a variety of spiritual and cultural contexts. Beyond being just a simple hairstyle, dreadlocks have deeper cultural and symbolic meaning. They can also lead to spiritual and personal growth.

A spiritual path of self-discovery and introspection may be followed by those who embrace their dreadlocks as a means of establishing a connection with the holy. Drooping and maintaining one’s hair or creating sacred rituals are two ways that dreadlocks can contribute to one’s empowerment and personal growth.

From their cultural roots to their spiritual meanings, dreadlocks provide a unique perspective on the relationships between spirituality, human culture, and individual identity. Recognize the spirituality and holiness of dreadlocks, and educate yourself on their cultural and philosophical importance.

The Locs Have It: Black Women On The Beauty Of Their Loc Journeys

Maybe it's the fact that I have gone back and forth with the decision for years since going natural , or maybe it is just the way Black women's ability to Black women gets taken to goddess levels the second they enter any space rocking the style, but locs and the Black women who wear them will forever have a place in my heart. Anything a Black woman does emits a healthy dose of undeniable magic, but locs to me just hit different.

By definition, dreadlocks, or locs, are a hairstyle where the hair falls in rope-like strands that are created on coarse and textured hair types through palm rolls, twists, or coils . Usually, they are created on Black hair through styling and refraining from combing through the hair or the locs that are created.

The style that originated in ancient Egypt became popularized by the late Bob Marley in the 1970s and has only risen in visibility in the mainstream throughout the years being worn by the likes of Whoopi Goldberg and even more recently, rappers like 2 Chainz and J. Cole and entertainers like sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey .

'Natural hair' seems to default to loose naturals, but people who wear locs should be included more in those conversations, which leads me to the creation of this piece. From traditional locs to freeform, there is no one way to wear locs and the wearer often has the ability to own the style in a way that feels unique to the individual.

Below, Black women with locs discuss the inspiration behind their locs, how they feel about their hair, and the overall expansiveness of their loc journeys.

Loc Type: Traditional

Length of Time: A little over three years

How Many: 117 locs

"I started my locs sitting in my childhood room at my parents' house in 2019. I started with two-strand twists and no parts but a slight idea of how I would probably like to style them in the future. Each one of my locs looks very different and they vary a little in size but they’re all a little smaller than the width of a pencil.

"I knew I wanted to get locs at 14 when I had a coil hairstyle done for my brother’s wedding. I literally begged my mom to let me start locs but she said no because I used to change my hair all the time and she thought that I would miss doing that. I eventually started my locs after I helped my mom start hers. I’ve had relaxed hair before and have done big chops three different times in my life but when I started my locs I had been a loose natural for years so I had some length already. I’m actually the 9th woman in my family to start locs and it has been such a beautiful experience to share my journey with the people who I love the most.

"When I put my starter locs in I remember being very satisfied with myself when I looked in the mirror. Maybe it’s because I’ve watched so many loc journeys over the years so I knew what to expect, but I wasn’t worried about how they would turn out at all. I was really intentional when I started them and decided that I would enjoy the whole journey regardless of how thin or shrunken my little baby locs looked at the various stages of my journey.

"I think that maintaining them myself for the past three years has definitely helped me connect with my physical self more and become more confident in the fact that everything I need is within me."

"In the following months after I loc’d my hair I experienced crazy shrinkage so I definitely had an 'awkward' phase where it was a challenge to put it all up in a ponytail so I was a little limited in what styles I could do or that I felt comfortable doing. I actually really liked that phase because it allowed me to live out my 'bob' era but when in doubt I always kept a headwrap on deck for the times I would rather not deal with my hair.

"I really love my locs and the journey I’ve gone on since having them. I think that maintaining them myself for the past three years has definitely helped me connect with my physical self more and become more confident in the fact that everything I need is within me. I feel like I trust myself a lot more because I approached the experience with the goal of growing my intuition and strengthening my relationship with myself.

"Although locs are definitely a commitment, no condition is permanent and hair isn’t an exception to that rule. If you decide it’s not for you in the future, you’ll always have the option to regroup or start over. Just set your intentions, do what you are being guided to do, and try to enjoy and learn from each experience as much as possible."

Melissa Chanel @melissachanel

Length of Time: Two years

How Many: 54 locs

"My journey started during the pandemic. I wanted something low-maintenance because I was tired of having my hands in my hair all of the time. I started rocking mini twists to see if I liked the style and the rest is history. I started my journey in November 2020.

"I was so over doing my natural hair. I was tired of twisting, braiding, and not knowing if the style would last or even look good the next day. I loved my afro but just didn’t have time for the maintenance anymore. I did not [do the] big chop and [I] started my locs with two strand twist[s]. I was happy to not have to worry about styling my hair anymore! I also felt excited to be on a different journey and try something new with my hair.

"It was the best hair decision I could’ve made. I enjoy the versatility and how I can work out, go swimming, and do all the things without having to worry about my hair. I was in the salon at a very young age growing up, so my hair has always been one of my favorite accessories. I love expressing myself through different hairstyles and trends.

"I feel like natural hair is a journey. It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing an afro or locs because it still comes with different stages of growth. When I was in the starter stage it was a little awkward and I couldn’t get over how fuzzy they were getting, but I learned to embrace it quickly. I overcame it by trying different hair accessories for my locs like headbands, loc charms, hats, etc.

"It’s hair. Try different styles, take chances especially if you’re looking for versatility (just look at Chloe and Halle) and ease with your hair! There are many techniques to remove locs if you don’t like them. It takes patience and they’re not for everyone."

How Many: 68 locs

"I have what you would call ‘traditional’ locs. I started my locs with two-strand twists. When starting traditional locs you want to make sure you part them exactly how you’d want your locs to be laid out and you have to consider how thick or thin they will be based on the size of your parts. After binge-watching a ton of loc videos, I had a friend come over to part out and twist my hair for me while I worked (I work from home). My loc journey took off from there.

"I’ve always had a love for locs. My love for them really grew when I started maintaining a friend’s locs in college. I knew I wanted to loc my hair when I realized that I had gotten tired of keeping up with my loose natural hair. I got my hair relaxed when I was super young and kept getting relaxers up until 2015. I did my big chop six months after my last relaxer and I was natural ever since. I can honestly say I was not prepared for the amount of work that went into being natural. I was natural for about six years before starting my locs so my hair was already pretty long when I started them.

"Truthfully, I didn’t really like how I looked [in the beginning]. It took me a while to adjust to the way my locs looked on me. When I got my first retwist I had a really hard time liking it. It was a two-stand twist style that just didn’t lay right and my locs unraveled because they were still so new. I did twist-outs on my natural hair all the time but this time was different. There was definitely an awkward phase!

"I love my hair! It has taught me patience and the beauty of watching something grow and mature. I’ve learned to find beauty in mess."

"Though I started with long hair, the frizz was the hardest part to adjust to. It took me a while to get used to the fact that locs aren’t always meant to look neat and tidy. I had spent so much time trying to tame my loose natural hair that I thought the same things had to be applied to my locs. I overcame it by intentionally not styling or covering my hair, trying new hairstyles, and being patient with locs as they grew and matured. Now I LOVE my frizz.

"I think deciding to get locs was the best decision I made in 2021. I love my hair! It has taught me patience and the beauty of watching something grow and mature. I’ve learned to find beauty in mess. My hair has helped me to grow as a content creator. It has made me more confident in front of the camera too.

"My favorite thing about my locs is their personality. I love that each loc is different. It’s a beautiful journey and everyone embarks on it for their own reasons. You don’t have to be spiritual or super knowledgeable on locs to get them. I knew very little about locs before getting them and it certainly wasn’t a spiritual decision. I would say laziness low-key pushed me towards embarking on this journey and I don’t regret it one bit!"

Comedian and actor Russell Brand recently announced that he’s going to be baptized, the culmination of his months-long public wrestling with the principles of Christianity. Brand said in a video he posted to X, “This Sunday, I’m taking the plunge. I’m getting baptized.” Brand said he’s heard baptism explained to him as “an opportunity to die and be reborn; an opportunity to leave the past behind and be reborn in Christ’s name like it says in Galatians: that you can live as an enlightened and awakened person.”

He also referenced what he suggested were non-Christian reflections on the same theme of embracing death for the sake of life, quoting Stoic philosopher and Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and the Buddha. He said, “All of these things seem so inviting and beautiful.” The comedian also suggested that increasing numbers of people are turning back to Christianity as the empty value system of modernity collapses and leaves them wanting more.

He said, “I know a lot of people are sort of cynical about the increasing interest in Christianity and the return to God, but to me, it’s obvious. As meaning deteriorates in the modern world, as our value systems and institutions crumble, all of us become increasingly aware that there is this eerily familiar awakening and beckoning figure that we’ve all known all of our lives, within us and around us. And for me, it’s very exciting.” Brand added that he intends to get baptized in the heavily polluted River Thames, joking that he might also be getting baptized in toxoplasmosis and E. coli. “I may be leaving behind the sins, but I might be picking up some pretty serious viruses,” he said.

Baptism. This Sunday I’m taking the plunge! How was it for you? pic.twitter.com/DnwcUrzoqa — Russell Brand (@rustyrockets) April 26, 2024

Brand’s baptism comes after other videos he has been making in recent months about his spiritual journey to the Christian faith. In December , he told followers he was reading the Bible and  The Problem of Pain , a 1940 book by C.S. Lewis that explores the role of suffering in the Christian life. In January, he noted that he was reading Rick Warren’s  The Purpose-Driven Life and desired a “personal relationship with God” as he found Jesus Christ increasingly important as he grows older, despite once seeing many churches as either too “old-fashioned” or too modernized. Brand said at the time, “The reason I wear a cross is because Christianity and, in particular, the figure of Christ, are, it seems to me, inevitably becoming more important as I become more familiar with suffering, purpose, self, and not-self.”

In March, he posted a video explaining that he had been visiting churches of various denominations with the intention of possibly getting baptized and asked his followers their opinions on the sacrament. During an  interview  with Tucker Carlson last year, Brand said, “Like many desperate people, I need spirituality. I need God, or I cannot cope in this world. I need to believe in the best in people.” Acknowledging he “didn’t have enough self-discipline to resist the allure of stardom,” he said he “fell face-first into the glitter, and I’m only just pulling myself out now.”

Brand faces multiple allegations of sexual misconduct going back years, including one  report  that claims he assaulted a 16-year-old girl after pulling her into an “emotionally and sexually abusive” relationship. Brand has denied the “very serious criminal allegations” and maintained that while he was “very, very promiscuous” in the past, all of his sexual relationships were “always consensual.”
