Top 10 Best Star Trek Female Characters, Ranked From Romulans to Illyrians

Image of Dennis Limmer

It’s not easy coming up with the  best Star Trek female characters , because there are so many to choose from. We wish we could name every one of them since there have been amazing female characters throughout the original Star Trek series, The Next Generation, and the recent Strange New Worlds. But this bodes well for the franchise, providing an excellent balance between male and female characters that’s helped elevate Star Trek beyond the confines of any world. Without further ado, let’s check out the list.

10. Romulan Commander

star-trek-romulan-commander

The first time the Federation’s deadliest enemy was introduced was in the original series episode The Enterprise Incident. Kirk gives in to his daring nature and takes his Enterprise ship into Romulan territory, where he encounters a squadron. What makes this character even more significant is the fact that she remains unnamed to this day and yet is such an important milestone for Star Trek canon and history.

While Kirk attempts to gather intel on the Romulans, the commander is fascinated by Spock and tries to persuade him to join her. It becomes apparent she might have a romantic inclination toward him. After inviting Spock to dinner, she explains how Romulan women are passionate when compared to logical Vulcan women. Spock is put on edge, but resists her offer and maintains his loyalty. All along, Spock was helping Kirk steal the invaluable cloaking device to help advance the Federation’s technology. At the end of the episode, the Romulan commander is captured aboard the Enterprise and held as a prisoner. In a moment of privacy, Spock admits that his romantic interest in her was not pretended.

9. Philippa Georgiou

star-trek-Philippa-Georgiou

Georgiou is a Malaysian human who became one of the Starfleet Academy’s most decorated officers and the captain of U.S.S. Shenzou. During a routine activity, her crew encountered the hostile Klingon Empire and things quickly escalated into an event known as the Battle at the Binary Stars before becoming the catalyst to the Klingon-Federation War. Georgiou lost her life to the leader of the Klingons, T’Kuvma, as she tried to capture him on his ship in an attempt to prevent the war. She is a smart and driven commander who will go down in Star Trek history for her sacrifice.

8. Elizabeth Shelby

star-trek-elizabeth-shelby

Commander Elizabeth Shelby has a bit of notoriety to her name, mostly owing to her rivalry with Commander William T. Riker. After confidently believing she would replace him as Captain Picard’s first officer, Riker didn’t take too kindly to her after his promotion to commander of U.S.S. Melbourne. To Shelby’s chagrin, she ended up becoming Riker’s first officer. Elizabeth has a similar personality to Admiral James T. Kirk in that she is a risk-taker when the greater good is involved.

As such, she ended up going over Riker’s head when leading an away team to investigate a Borg attack, and went so far as to lead another team to rescue Picard when the Borg kidnapped him. She eventually moved up the ranks to be a commanding officer herself, and it would be great to find out more about her in future shows.

7. Deanna Troi

star-trek-deanna-troi

Deanna Troi is a standout character not just due to her exoticness, but also because of her half-human, half-Betazoid hybrid race. This mixed-race is what gave her telepathic abilities (though decreased in their effectiveness), and those powers were perfect for the crew’s counselor. She brought prominence to this Starfleet position and proved the most valuable assets to have in space are communication and empathy.

On many occasions, her abilities helped smooth things out during turbulent encounters, and she survived many different scenarios including being surgically altered, impersonating Romulans, and figuring out when others were lying. Deanna eventually married Riker and did more than enough to secure her legacy in Star Trek canon and history.

6. Michael Burnham

star-trek-MICHAEL-BURNHAM

Michael has great importance to Star Trek canon, bringing more diversity while also being the main protagonist on the Star Trek: Discovery series despite not acting as the captain. Her story overshadows her captain Gabriel Lorca, and while she served under Captain Phillippa Georgiou, she would commit mutiny and injure Phillippa in order to force the U.S.S. Shenzhou to preemptively attack the Klingons. After being a part of the Klingon-Federation war’s inciting incident, Captain Lorca reduced her sentence since he wanted crew members dedicated to defeating the Klingons.

Her backstory is unique in that she was a human raised by Klingons, and none other than Spock’s father, Sarek, specifically. Not a typical Star Trek character, Michael is a complicated woman, most likely created under modern characterization precepts, and it will be interesting to see how her story develops.

5. Beverly Crusher

star-trek-beverly-crusher

Talk about an intimidating name. Beverly Crusher is an all-around amazing female character, and not at all an aggressive one like her last name might suggest. She served as the chief medical officer on both Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E, and was a main crew member on Star Trek: The Next Generation. She was also a loving mother to Wesley Crusher and after her husband’s tragic passing, developed a close bond with Picard that blurred the lines between friendship and romance.

Beverly Crusher is controversial in that many wished she was further developed than what was allowed on screen in the Star Trek the Next Generation shows and movies. Her closeness to Picard also rallied fans to request her to have a main role in the Picard series, and many non-canonical books were written about the pairing, and the life they share together, along with their son.

4. Seven of Nine

star-trek-seven-of-nine

Seven of Nine’s name should state the obvious; there’s nothing quite like her. Although human, she was a former Borg drone, meaning she was part of the Borg Collective until she was liberated by Kathryn Janeway and her U.S.S. Voyager crew. As an assimilated Borg, she was taken by them and enhanced with cybernetics. In the case of Seven of Nine, or Annika Hansen, she was abducted at the age of six and dubbed Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero One.

After her complex and traumatic upbringing, she becomes nuanced and complicated aboard the U.S.S. Voyager. She brings many deep, dramatic, and thematic elements to Star Trek, portraying a character that demands respect, patience, and understanding. After all, consider the fact that she was kidnapped as a child, forced to become a Borg drone, and then has difficulty assimilating with her human peers (let alone other races), while also having to suppress an urge to rejoin the Borg. For the show, she brought plenty of tense moments, as well as emotional scenes, funny moments, and butt-kicking action.

3. Nyota Uhura

star-trek-nyota-uhura

Uhura has seen different incarnations throughout the various Star Trek series and movies, and Strange New Worlds has really taken her to the next level. Her latest on-screen portrayal brings a balanced sense of vulnerability, strengths, weaknesses, and backstory. Although she begins as a communications officer aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, she eventually achieves the rank of commander of the U.S.S. Leondegrance for her remaining services to the Starfleet.

She can also be considered the first true standout female character or lead and deserves it completely. Uhura brings a great amount of diversity and unique themes to explore. As the expert linguist on her crew, and with her potential to grow, we’re looking forward to seeing more of her on a regular basis.

2. Number One / Una Chin-Riley

star-trek-una-chin-riley

As her designated name states, Number One is the first officer to Pike, and ranks just shy of the number one spot on this list. In the original series, she was only referred to as Number One but was later named Una Chin-Riley in several non-canon Star Trek novels. It’s great how Strange New Worlds finally solidifies her name as canon. Also in the new series, Una is given a more involved role and is attached to a key plot involving Pike’s destiny. Since she’s an Illyrian, she’s genetically modified, which is also why she looks like a human, while her kind normally does not.

From the beginning of the Strange New Worlds series, Starfleet makes it clear that they are anti-genetically modified beings. This puts her in a terrible position, and in direct defiance of Federation law. Regardless, she’s already had spotlight episodes where she’s saved the crew from a deadly virus, and has special empathy when it comes to forming bonds with fellow crew members. The fact that she risks it all to help her crewmates and perform her duties to better mankind makes her all the more compelling and one to root for.

1. Kathryn Janeway

star-trek-kathryn-janeway

Kathryn Janeway is an iconic female character that hasn’t received as much attention as she should, especially in recent Star Trek lore and media. In Starfleet history, she remains one of the most highly decorated captains and is notoriously known for her obsession with coffee. On a more serious note, one of her most notable accomplishments is how she took command of the U.S.S. Voyager as it made its way through the dangerous Delta Quadrant, which is home to the Borg Collective. Thanks to her leadership, the Voyager was able to bring the crew safely back to earth through a Borg transwarp conduit.

Her time as a commander also gained her another milestone which she achieved during her space exploration. It’s been estimated in various episodes how she’s made first contact with more alien races than James T. Kirk. She eventually gets promoted to the rank of Admiral after helping prevent another technologically advanced species from the Delta Quadrant, the Vau N’Akat, from destroying the Federation. To top it off, she defeated the Borg Queen and has a diverse background full of hobbies, passions, and scientific skills. Most of all, she comes across as being a balanced leader; one who is smart, decisive, and strong, but also kind, caring, and understanding. No other female character has been involved in so many Star Trek critical events and achieved so much, which makes her deserving of this top spot.

That’s our list of the top best Star Trek female characters , but the great thing about this franchise is that it has always been a pioneer for portraying powerful women of diverse races, ages, and cultures. There are way more than 10 great female characters in the Star Trek mythos, and new prominent female characters are being introduced all the time. If you’re a Star Trek fan, you owe it to yourself to check out the video game, Resurgence .

Set Phasers To Bone: Star Trek Shows, Ranked By Sexiness

Still from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Anyone who's ever watched an episode of "Star Trek" knows that space wasn't the only frontier they were exploring. The franchise is wonderfully horny, from its hormone-driven Captain Kirk (William Shatner) in the early days all the way to Spock (Ethan Peck) having a passionate (by Vulcan standards) love affair with his fiancée on "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." In celebration of the debut of "Strange New Worlds" and its proper appreciation for keeping "Star Trek" sexy, I've put together a ranking of all of the "Star Trek" shows, from least sexy to sexiest. " Strange New Worlds " hasn't been out long enough to make the list, but if the five episodes made available to critics are any indicator, it'll be close to the top.

Sexiness is relative and subjective, so this list is ranked by judging overall cast sex appeal, diversity and quality of romantic story-lines, and how frequently the series shows its characters getting down. While each of the "Star Trek" series is sexy in its own way, some are just better at the salaciousness, balancing camp and some silly sexuality with the franchise's heavier, allegory-driven output. Series creator Gene Roddenberry included sexuality from the beginning, but every iteration since has taken its own path.

So, which series is sexiest? See how your favorites pan out below.

9. Enterprise

How can "Enterprise" be the least sexy, you say, when it was the show that tried the most desperately to be sexy? Well, just that. "Enterprise" is chock-full of naked flesh and see-through shirts, but it all feels so weirdly exploitative that it's never actually very hot. The hotties of "Enterprise" are all lovely to look at, but their sexual exploits never really seem like much fun. T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) is the focus of most of the series' sexual escapades, including an episode where she goes into an uncontrollable sex-craze due to Pon-Farr, the Vulcan mating cycle. (Think of it like a cat in heat.) The costumes are also all skin-tight, the crew gets naked pretty regularly, and the camera follows people's most sexually appealing parts more than you see in other "Star Trek" series. I don't even think of it as the male gaze so much as the Rick Berman gaze, objectifying every woman onscreen and the occasional man for good measure. Berman has a long history of treating the women of "Trek" like objects and he co-created "Enterprise," so there's not too much surprise that it's as voyeuristic as it is. It's really too bad, too, because series captain/hot dad  Scott Bakula looked pretty good in a Starfleet uniform.

Sexiest moment:  In the season 3 episode "Damage," T'Pol has a wet and wild shower sex scene with Chief Engineer Tucker (Connor Trinneer), though it is eventually revealed to only be a hallucination as a result of her withdrawal from a Trelium-D treatment.

While it's impossible to deny the incredible hotness of Jeri Ryan, who plays the former Borg Seven of Nine , "Star Trek: Voyager" just really isn't all that sexy. Perhaps in an effort to stand apart from the character-driven "Deep Space Nine," "Voyager" didn't really give its crew many romances or even opportunities for casual hookups. Sure, Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) slept with the enemy in season 5 and there was an annoying "will-they/won't they" situation with Chakotay (Robert Beltran) and Seven of Nine, but beyond the simple ogling of women in spandex that always comes with '90s "Trek," there just isn't much to get the engines going.

Sexiest moment:  Chakotay and Seven of Nine had one deliciously spicy moment, but unfortunately, much like T'Pol's shower scene on "Enterprise," this one also didn't actually happen. While trying to reconcile her romantic feelings for Chakotay, Seven of Nine recreates him on the holodeck and they end up getting hot and heavy. This complicates things in the real world for poor Seven of Nine, whose feelings for Chakotay are so strong that her brain shuts itself down as a protective mechanism left over from her Borg programming. Then again, if his smoldering eyes ever gazed my way, my brain might shut off, too.

Once more, the sexiest thing about the series is Jeri Ryan, though her season 2 romantic subplot is chaste to the point of being non-existent. She's also not stuck in the awkward "Voyager-era uniform, either, and seems more comfortable in her own skin. "Star Trek: Picard" isn't all that focused on sex or sexuality, though the eternally simmering hotness of Sir Patrick Stewart cannot go without being mentioned. A man who enjoys good wine and understands the nuances of time travel? Meooww. Season 3 is bringing back the rest of the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" cast, too, which means there will be even more silver-haired hotness to enjoy.

Sexiest moment:  The existence of Seven of Nine and Picard, basically.

6. Lower Decks

"Lower Decks" is an animated comedy series, so it's not exactly trying to be all that sexy. There are some fun flirtations and a few sex jokes here and there among the crew that work the lower decks  on a mostly forgotten starship, but overall, things are relatively chaste or are played for laughs. Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) even misses out on the chance to bone down with his date because he's too interested in weird technical minutiae. The crew of the Cerritos are voiced by plenty of sexy people, but their animated counterparts are hindered by the show's animation style, which simplifies everyone's features and highlights silliness. That is, except for one very special guest appearance.

Sexiest moment: I don't know if it's just that Johnathan Frakes is attractive across all mediums or if they did something special while designing cartoon Will Riker, but yum. Utilizing only a handful of hard lines and a very limited color palette, they somehow managed to make the man who can never sit correctly a total hottie in two dimensions. Well done.

5. The Animated Series

Like "Lower Decks," "Star Trek: The Animated Series" is animated and not really trying to be all that sexual, at least most of the time. There are two notable exceptions, however, and one of those is sexy enough to get a leg up on "Lower Decks." In an episode called "Mudd's Passion," Nurse Chapel tries to use love crystals on Spock in order to get some Vulcan lovin', which is a pretty gross attempt to basically space-roofie the poor man. Thanks, 1970s. Thankfully, there's also an episode called "The Lorelei Signal" where the male away-team members end up entranced by hot alien sirens and Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) has to save their sex-stupefied behinds.

Sexiest moment:  The men falling under the spell of the beautiful, Barbie-esque sirens is pretty great. It's the kind of thing that would go on to be spoofed in other shows, like the " Futurama " episode "Amazon Women in the Mood."

4. Discovery

"Star Trek: Discovery" is a mixed bag of sexiness. On the good side of things, there's an incredibly diverse cast of hotties that are getting between the sheets in all kinds of ways. There's an actual romantic relationship between two men, after all, and the series was the first to depict a same-sex masculine kiss in the franchises' long history. There's trans and non-binary characters ! Perhaps most importantly, the mirror universe version of Michelle Yeoh's character, Philippa Georgiou, is a pansexual who has a threesome with a man and a woman in season 1. If "pansexual Michelle Yeoh" doesn't get your heart racing, I'm not sure what will. Unfortunately, points have to be removed for the episode "Into the Forest I Go," which depicts sexual assault in a bizarrely "titillating" way.

Sexiest moment: Most of the sex on "Discovery" is only hinted at, or is just a bit of love between romantic partners, but again: evil mirror universe threesome.

3. The Next Generation

Alright, now we're getting into truly sexy "Star Trek" territory. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" gave the crew of the Enterprise under Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) plenty of chances to bone down with each another, aliens, and even a ghost. Unfortunately there really isn't much LGBTQ+ representation, and the one chance the series had to really explore a character's potential bisexuality was frustratingly not taken , but otherwise there's plenty of wild interstellar interspecies action. "The Next Generation" taught us about the intricacies of Klingon mating rituals when Q tried to give Worf a female mate, advocated for polyandry in certain situations in "Up the Long Ladder," and introduced us to the character of Lwaxana Troi (Majel Barrett, who played the original Nurse Chapel in "The Original Series"), who might be the horniest character in all of "Star Trek." Seriously, this woman is  thirsty , and has no qualms stroking a Ferengi's lobes or hitting on Odo (Rene Auberjonois) on "Deep Space Nine" until he wants to stay a puddle forever. Instead of punishing her or chastising her for her sexuality, however, "Star Trek" made her into everyone's favorite horny space aunt and let her be herself. (The fact that she was  married  to Gene Roddenberry, who cast her as the demure Nurse Chapel, honestly makes her onscreen flirtations that much funnier.)

One of the series' wildest sexy moments happened in season 7 with the infamous episode "Sub Rosa." In that episode, Gates McFadden's Dr. Beverly Crusher attends the funeral of her grandmother only to discover that the women in her family have been haunted by a hot ghost for generations. It turns out that there's a special candle that can wake the ghost, and Crusher lights it. She and the ghost then get it on, and it turns out that he's some kind of alien ghost who uses the candle as an energy source to survive on. Their romantic entanglement is a funhouse mirror to the scene in "Ghostbusters" where Dan Aykroyd similarly tangles with the erotic undead, though it's not played for laughs.

Sexiest moment:  In season 1, episode 3, "The Naked Now," there's an infection that lowers the crew's inhibitions and is spread by physical contact. The episode was an expansion of the events from an Original Series episode called "The Naked Time," though "The Next Generation" got decidedly more naked in its episode. Under the effects of the infection, Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) starts looking for someone to have sex with on the ship, though she eventually sets her sights on Data (Brent Spiner), the ship's android crew member. She asks him how "functional" he is sexually and he replies that not only is he "fully functional" but he's programmed with a variety of pleasurable techniques. The two do the horizontal tango, inspiring android fetishes everywhere. Data's sexuality would be further explored in the movie "Star Trek: First Contact," where he has a complicated affair with the Borg Queen (Alice Krige). Is it weird? Yes. Is it hot? Undoubtedly.

2. The Original Series

"Star Trek," now known as "Star Trek: The Original Series," is the one that started it all. The series debuted in 1966 and starred a whole bunch of hotties in skintight costumes, gallivanting about space and meeting even more space hotties. While the original series was never allowed to get as explicit as some of the later shows, there's still plenty of sex appeal and references to sexuality peppered throughout. In fact, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) has such a habit of sleeping with women who pop up throughout his adventures that Dr. "Bones" McCoy laments it by the time we reach the movie "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. When Kirk hooks up with a shapeshifter on the prison planet Rura Penthe, Bones grumbles "What is it with you, anyway?"

Because it's a series from the 1960s, there are plenty of skimpy skirts and shirtless men to gaze upon, and the series did break ground for showing an interracial kiss in primetime between Kirk and Lt. Uhura, only a year after interracial marriage was deemed legal by the United States Supreme Court. "Star Trek" has always been about progressive ideals and pushing boundaries, and the show pushed for more progressive love and sexuality from the very start. While there aren't any explicitly queer characters on the original series, many fans felt that the relationship between Kirk and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) was more than just a deep friendship. They were a true odd couple , the passionate human and the logical half-Vulcan, and even though the series never made them officially romantic, Roddenberry famously had no problem with the stacks of fan-fiction written to make it so.

Sexiest moment:  In the episode "Amok Time," we're first introduced to the idea of Pon-Farr, where Vulcans must mate or they go mad. Spock starts acting really strangely and Kirk tries to help, but the two end up forced to battle with bladed weapons. There's homoeroticism, Spock being wildly horny, and it's hinted that Spock and Nurse Chapel hooked up off screen. It's a perfect mix of all things horny in Trek, and it's a lot of fun, too.

1. Deep Space Nine

Here we are at last, at the sexiest "Star Trek" series of all time: "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." While I am admittedly biased towards this series because it helped me process my own sexuality and gave me queer role models , "Deep Space Nine" is just ridiculously sexy. The series focused on the interpersonal dynamics of the crew much more than previous series, which made some fans feel like it was a "soap opera in space," but that attention to character relationships was what really made the series sing. Every character was given a chance to explore their identities, and that almost always included their sexuality. "Deep Space Nine" explored a number of relationships, each of them with their own unique twist. Captain Sisko (Avery Brooks) and Kasidy Yates (Penny Johnson Jerald) had to learn how to balance their careers with their romance. Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) and Odo (René Auberjonois) had to figure out love between a former terrorist with PTSD and a shapeshifter exiled from his people. Worf  (Michael Dorn) and Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) have perhaps the most loving, healthy, hot relationship in the series, despite being a joined Trill and a Klingon raised by Russians. There are multiple lesbian makeout sessions, and Garak (Andrew Robinson) and Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) have a homoerotic friendship to put Kirk and Spock to shame. Everyone's hot, everyone's humping, and it all plays into their complex relationships.

Sexiest moment:  "Deep Space Nine" really goes wild with the mirror universe, letting the actors who play some of the more repressed characters unleash their inner campy horny selves in their doppelgänger counterparts. The alternate version of Kira is an oversexed villainess who slinks around and tries to seduce the other version of herself because, hey, why not? When Sisko ends up in the mirror universe, he not only hooks up with the dominatrix-esque Mirror Kira, he also bones Mirror Dax. It's more than a little ethically fuzzy because both of them think he's Mirror Sisko and not Prime Sisko undercover, though both women are totally unphased when they discover that they slept with a different Sisko.

Watching Mirror Kira strut her stuff and act like a Bond villainess turned up to 11 is not only an incredible amount of fun, it's also pretty darn sexy. Visitor seems to be having a blast acting the part, and the other actors similarly lean in to being deliciously devilish villains. If the crew of "Deep Space 9" are among the hottest in all of Trek, their mirror counterparts blow everyone else out of the competition.

Star Trek: The 15 Fiercest Females Of The Final Frontier

Star Trek's one of the most progressive franchises in history, but that doesn't mean there's no room for some eye candy.

While Star Trek is known for its commitment to progressive ideals, it, like so much of sci-fi, can't resist an opportunity to insert eye-candy here and there. The original series really leaned into female sexuality as set dressing, evidenced by Kirk's numerous "relationships," and the mini-dresses and go-go boots that constitute military uniforms in the 22nd century. It was a huge contradiction in terms, but that was mitigated by the fact that Star Trek was culturally groundbreaking in so many other ways (see: treatment of racism) and eventually evolved to grant women far more respectful treatment in its later spin-offs.

However, despite the fact that female characters on The Next Generation and beyond were the first ones whose episodes would actually pass a Bechdel Test, producers still couldn't resist sneaking in a certain physical appeal wherever they could. Star Trek's general lack of focus on such visuals post- TOS made for a lot of very appealing scientists or criminals, so that's most of what you're going to see on this list. We've grabbed 15 of the hottest Star Trek babes from the franchise's long and storied history, but the list is based on more than just appearance. Every woman on it is stunning, but for their actions as well as their looks.

15 SEVEN OF NINE

Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine beamed aboard Star Trek: Voyager in the Season 4 premier, "Scorpion Pt. 2." The lost starship had just arrived at the backdoor of Borg space with no realistic way to travel through it without getting assimilated. Fortunately, Voyager and the Borg realized they shared a common enemy in Species 8472, so the two entities formed an uneasy alliance. Seven of Nine served as the Borg envoy, but was stranded aboard Voyager after the destruction of her cube and the end of the alliance.

The official word on the creation of Seven of Nine is that the producers wanted a character who would have a more antagonistic relationship with Captain Janeway than the show had ever featured. Unofficially, the show's key demographic at the time (teenage boys) clearly needed more motivation to watch. Luckily for all the young women watching, Seven of Nine turned out to be a dynamic character that truly enriched the story.

14 UHURA IN THE MIRROR UNIVERSE

Somehow, the Mirror Universe has the same effect on everyone as the Kelvin Universe -- everyone's hotter. Spock has a goatee, Kirk's into cutoff sleeves and Uhura somehow finds less to wear. In the original Star Trek  classic, "Mirror, Mirror," Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura go to a neighboring alternate universe where everyone's the jerk version of themselves. It's amazing, and the episode spawned a delightful subplot that would show up again in longer story arcs on Deep Space Nine and Enterprise .

We're very glad it did. The Mirror Universe is Star Trek camp at its indulgent best, and seeing the dark side of our favorite, goody-two-shoes Federation never fails to entertain. When Uhura impersonates her Mirror-counterpart and tries to seduce Sulu ON THE BRIDGE, we always get goosebumps and the giggles at the same time.

13 JADZIA DAX

The planet Trill is home to two species that share a symbiotic relationship with each other. The humanoids play host to symbionts, sentient, worm-like entities that merge consciousness with the host body. Jadzia was the eighth home for the Dax symbiont, and the young woman gained the memories of all those joined lifetimes when they were merged.

That meant Jadzia Dax was a combination of, among others, a grandmother, a pilot, a gymnast, a murderer and a very popular Federation diplomat named Curzon. Curzon Dax had been good friends with and mentor to a young Benjamin Sisko, so when Jadzia was assigned to Deep Space Nine, Sisko often still referred to her as "Old Man." Somehow, that made this bespotted, brunette bombshell even more attractive. That, and she really knows her way around a bat'leth.

12 MARTIA (IMAN)

Iman snagged one of the meatier cameos in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (Christian Slater has a blink-and-you-missed-it scene in which he plays a fanboy ensign who delivers a message to Kirk's quarters). After Kirk and McCoy are framed for the murder of Klingon Chancellor Gorkon, they're sent to a remote, frozen penal colony on Rura Penthe. As soon as Kirk arrives, he gets into a scuffle with a much larger alien prisoner, and bodacious alien babe, Martia, comes to his rescue.

Think if Tank Girl was a runway model and smoked cigars -- oh, and she's shapeshifter. Unfortunately, she's also morally bankrupt and has already promised the Klingons who framed Kirk and McCoy that she would off the Starfleet officers in return for a suspended sentence. It, uh, doesn't work out well for her.

Picard wasn't exactly the lothario Kirk was, so when he did ever close the deal, it was front page news, especially when the other side of that deal was basically his polar opposite. Vash (Jennifer Hetrick) first appeared in "Captain's Holiday," a.k.a. "Picard's Staff Makes Him Take a Personal Day." Picard goes to Risa to relax, but he's terrible at it, so he winds up getting involved in an archeological caper with Vash, a gorgeous and morally flexible archeologist.

She's searching for an artifact called the Tox Uthat (¯\_(ツ)_/¯), but she's on the run from a jealous Ferengi, so she enlists Jean-Luc to help her beat the little troll to the treasure. Along the way, Picard falls for her ne'er-do-well charms -- so much so that he completely overlooks it when he finds out she's been playing him the entire time.

10 ORION SLAVE WOMEN

Ahh, the Orion Slave Girl -- the semi-offensive plot device beloved by cosplayers the world over. They're one of Star Trek's oldest creations, dating back to the original, unaired pilot, "The Cage," and they're well known for their extreme... prowess . It's literally their only defining characteristic when they're mentioned in every other Star Trek until Enterprise .

In the episode, "Bound," it's discovered that part of the secret to their prowess is the intense quantity of pheromones the women emit. Not only are the girls said to have voracious appetites, they also inspire them in any men who happen by. These qualities made them a hot commodity on the Orion Slave Market, despite the fact that they were Orions themselves. The Orion Syndicate was never known for their scruples, after all.

9 NUMBER ONE

Majel Barrett-Roddenberry is Star Trek royalty for like, 10 different reasons. She voiced the computer, she was Gene Roddenberry's wife, and before she was any of that, she appeared as Number One in the original unaired original series pilot, "The Cage." An example of Roddenberry's progressive ideals, she played Number One, Captain Christopher Pike's notably female first officer.

Unfortunately, one of the (many) things NBC rejected in this first offering was the placement of a women in such a position of power. Transporters they could swallow, but a woman in the chain of command? Preposterous! Luckily for the future Mrs. Roddenberry, that wasn't the end of her Star Trek career, but we do wish we could've seen more of this lady. It would've been nice to see an attractive woman on the show rockin' it in something else besides a mini-dress.

8 MARLENA MOREAU

Remember how we said everyone's hotter in the Mirror Universe? Marelena Moreau is the exception that proves the rule -- she's smokin' in all universes. A perk of being a starship captain in the Terran Empire as opposed to the Federation is that the position comes with a Captain's Woman. It's not a formalized role, but it's an unwritten rule that everything on the ship belongs to the captain, and that includes the women. (The Mirror Universe is genuinely terrible, not just fun terrible.)

Marlena is Mirror Kirk's lady, and she yearns for a better life when she encounters NiceKirk in "Mirror, Mirror." She wants to abandon her universe for his, but despite the fact that he literally just slept with her, he refuses. Kirk looks sad for a minute, but then NiceMarlena gets assigned to the NiceEnterprise and everyone lives happily ever after (except MirrorMarlena, who is probably dead).

7 ROMULAN COMMANDER

"The Enterprise Incident" was the first time we met the Romulans, the Federation's eternally shady adversaries. Kirk suddenly loses his damn mind and takes the Enterprise into Romulan Space (apparently unprovoked). The ship encounters a Romulan squadron commanded by the as yet unnamed female Romulan Commander. Despite the fact that she only appeared in one episode and has remained nameless for the past 50 years, she's still an unforgettable character.

She's disdainful of Kirk and the other humans, but Spock really gets her engines going. She attempts to seduce him into joining her, and it is the only time we ever get to see Spock Prime approach the sex bomb we all knew was hiding under that Vulcan logic. Unfortunately, Kirk isn't insane, but on a secret mission to gather intelligence about the Romulans, so Spock and the Romulan Commander never consummate their forbidden love. DAMMIT.

6 KELVIN UHURA

Zoe Saldana's Uhura is an accomplished, passionate officer aboard Kirk's Enterprise. What was minor flirtation between the Prime Uhura and Spock became a full-fledged relationship in the Abrams movies. It offered audiences a chance to see Spock explore his humanity in a romantic relationship as well as in his friendship with Kirk. Zoe Saldana's vivacious and fierce personality is a phenomenal counterpart to the restrained logic of her partner's.

That said, she can make out with Spock all she wants, she's still hottest when she's standing toe-to-toe with a Klingon three times her size and learning languages in five minutes. Nichelle Nichols' Uhura was groundbreaking and Saldana's reimagined Uhura takes the best parts of the original and beautifully updates her for modern audiences. It makes us wish Prime Uhura yelled at Spock more.

5 MIRROR EZRI

After Jadzia's death at the end of DS9's sixth season, the writers introduced Ezri Dax -- the accidental 9th host of the Dax symbiont. Ezri was on the shuttle transporting the Dax symbiont back to Trill when an equipment malfunction made it necessary to join Dax with a new host immediately. So, when she arrived on DS9 months after Jadzia's death in possession of all the former hosts' memories, it made things awkward.

It also made things awkward that Ezri was pretty uncomfortable with herself -- not only was she green by Starfleet standards, she had also never planned on getting joined to a symbiont. Luckily, we got a seventh season Mirror Universe episode where we got a look at Ezri's more confident, more... into girls side. In this universe she's a mercenary who's become a favorite makeout buddy of Kira's Mirror Counterpart, the Intendant.

Continuing the tradition of catsuited ice queens started by Seven of Nine, T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) was a Vulcan attaché to the Enterprise under Captain Archer. And, like Seven of Nine, despite the fact that her appearance was gratuitously sexual, the conflicted Vulcan is brought to life beautifully by Blalock, and watching her navigate her at-first tenuous relationship with humanity remains compelling. And guess what??! She's got a Mirror Universe counterpart, too!

That T'Pol is a little edgier than NiceT'Pol, but she's still the only person worth rooting for on the "other" Enterprise. When the Defiant travels back in time to the 22nd century, she assists NiceArcher and Co. in making sure her universe doesn't succeed in keeping the technologically advanced ship. She definitely looks like a Vulcan Barbie while she's doing it, but it's kind of a campy, refreshing change from her normal wardrobe.

3 DEANNA TROI

While Deanna's certainly no Orion Slave Girl (perish the thought), she's still TNG's primary sex symbol (well, second to Riker sitting down). Make no mistake, she's a lady, but she's also a Betazoid. That means she's empathic and really, really comfortable with nudity. She's also brainy enough to be a psychologist, make it into Starfleet and get out of wearing a uniform (most of the time).

But given her history with Commander William "John Mayer" Riker and her numerous romantic relationships, Deanna definitely enjoyed her sexuality and that makes her even more of a bombshell. Or maybe it was the fact that she was one of the few people on the senior staff that wasn't constantly repressing urges. We're raising our eyebrows at you Picard, Crusher, Worf and Geordi.

2 THE INTENDANT

Like we said, EVERYONE is hotter in the Mirror Universe. The same is obviously true of the Intendant, Kira Nerys' Mirror Counterpart on DS9 . At this point in the Mirror Universe Timeline, the Terran Empire featured on TOS and Enterprise had finally been defeated by an ironic alliance between the Klingons and the Cardassians. The Terrans were enslaved and DS9 (Terok Nor once more) served as an Alliance outpost under Kira's command.

She's actively the polar opposite of NiceKira, fond of both torture and deception. She's a blast, though -- she runs around in a catsuit, wears a crown and is usually half-seducing anyone she shares a screen with (including NiceKira -- that was weird). While she's an undeniable villain and we'd never (EVER) want to meet her IRL, we can't help but admire how she's unapologetically living her best life.

1 CAROL MARCUS

Carol Marcus has a pivotal role to play in the Prime Star Trek  universe, so it was fitting when she showed up in Star Trek: Into Darkness . In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , she's an accomplished scientist who's revealed to be Kirk's ex-lover and the mother of his only son, David. In Into Darkness , Alice Eve took over the role as a much younger scientist who fakes her way onto Kirk's ship in order to investigate 72 very mysterious photon torpedoes.

As of now, it doesn't look like the character will reappear any time soon, so Kelvin Kirk is childless for the time being. You'll probably have noticed that everyone's hotter in the Kelvin Universe, and that fact got hammered home in Marcus' famous Starfleet-issue undies shot. Some fans grumbled at the scene's gratuitous nature, but compared to  TOS , the Abrams movies are still pretty tame.

Star Trek 's Sexiest Aliens

Marta (Yvonne Craig)

Any sexy- Trek list has to start with "those green ladies who dance all sexy and stuff." And though Susan Oliver undulated gamely enough in the show's original pilot, Yvonne Craig—yes, Batgirl herself—set the bar for moves and attitude. Watching her perfomance in the original series ep "Whom Gods Destroy," it's hard to say which was more fun: Watching her gyrations not work on Spock, or work really well on Kirk.

Gaila (Rachel Nichols)

Nichols' brief appearance as Uhura's Orion roommate/one of the many conquests of Chris Pine's delightfully horndoggy Kirk was perhaps the most wink-wink-nudge-nudge-inducing of the 2009 film's many, many callbacks to the original series.

Ilia (Persis Khambatta)

The Deltan race is apparently too sexy for hair. Anyway, the lovely Khambatta's role in Star Trek: The Motion Picture was really all about sex, even after her original character was killed and replaced by an exact replica. And she wouldn't stop going on about Shatner's "Kirk unit."

Kamala (Famke Janssen)

The Next Generation episode "The Perfect Mate" isn't one of the better ones, and Janssen's role as essentially a living, programmable sexbot is problematic to say the least. But the future Jean Grey does look absolutely stunning as this Kriosian, and you really believe that the future Professor X is doing his stoic utmost not to surrender to her charms.

Spock (Leonard Nimoy)

Maybe it's just us, but on the right face, those ears just do...something. (Come on, has Orlando Bloom ever looked half as good as he does as Legolas?) And the original Vulcan is the only...wait for it... logical choice as sexiest pointy-eared hobgoblin in the Alpha Quadrant. Yes, even in a bathrobe.

Spock (Zachary Quinto)

Still hot, in any timeline.

Saavik (Kirstie Alley)

More Vulcans? Sure! Honorable mentions to Robin Curtis and Kim Cattrall in their respective pointy-eared and plucked-eyebrow drag, but Alley wore the ears more naturally than anyone but Nimoy. Her buttoned-up Saavik had great chemistry with both Shatner and Nimoy in The Wrath of Khan .

T'Pring (Arlene Martel)

Martel's severe beauty as Spock's scheming wife-to-be in "Amok Time" sliced right through the soft-focus lenses they seemed to use on all close-ups of women in the original series.

T'Pol (Jolene Blalock)

Moving from the soft-focus era to the tight-catsuit-in-glorious-HD era, Enterprise 's Blalock looked less like a Vulcan and more like a really hot chick with a bad wig and fake ears. Which might have been why they opted for the tight catsuit...

The Romulan Commander (Mark Lenard)

Surprise! Not a Vulcan, but a Romulan, before The Next Generation gave them bumpy foreheads. Mark Lenard was absolutely convincing and compelling as Spock's aloof, distant father, Sarek. But he was sexy as the unnamed, passionate, conflicted Romulan commander who played U-boat skipper to Kirk's sub-hunter captain in the original series' "Balance of Terror."

Nero (Eric Bana)

The only post-bumpy-forehead Romulan to make the list. His delivery of the "Hi, Christopher, I'm Nero" line in J.J. Abrams' film gave his vengeance-driven, potentially one-note character a much-needed note of humor—always sexy.

Andrea (Sherry Jackson)

The miniskirt uniform notwithstanding, the original series' costume designers were good at coming up with female outfits that showed some skin, but not always at making them sexy. But this alien android's strategically cut jumpsuit and oh-so-'60s hairdo in "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" totally work. (And yes, that is Ted Cassidy, better known as Lurch from The Addams Family , behind her.)

Data (Brent Spiner)

Speaking of androids, come on: Data was hot. His evil twin Lore wasn't without his charms, we suppose, though a little too snotty and, well, homicidal for our tastes. But Data? Especially in those Next Generation episodes where he got to take command and order people around and stuff? Mmmmm...

Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor)

Speaking of ordering people around, who among us isn't turned on by beautiful, powerful people with complicated pasts and the steel to look impossible odds in the face and say, "If you want a war, I'll give you one"—and say it with a smile? We didn't need to see that tarted-up, alternate-universe Intendant version, Nana—your take on this Bajoran babe had us at the Deep Space Nine pilot.

Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell)

We get the sense Deep Space Nine writers didn't know what to do with Dax until they settled on the Trill being a multigenerational horndog. Beautiful as Farrell is, she makes the list because of three things that happened in the original-series crossover ep "Trials and Tribble-ations": She wore the miniskirt uniform; she preferred Spock to Kirk; and one of her previous hosts had played doctor with McCoy.

Worf (Michael Dorn)

Worf is not a merry man. Hot as he is through all that latex, this Klingon cutie has the worst luck with women. The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine are old news now, but it still feels like spoilers to talk about, you know, what happened. And then that other thing. That happened. But ladies, if you were thinking about consoling him? Forget it. Earth females are too fragile.

Kurn (Tony Todd)

Spock was only half-Vulcan: Nimoy created the template for all Vulcans who followed, but he was doing a trapped-between-two-worlds thing. It was Mark Lenard's turn as his father that defined how a "real" Vulcan behaved. The quintessential Klingon for us is Todd as Worf's brother. His intense interpretation brings to mind his work in Candyman , only with more makeup and fewer bees.

Amanda Rogers (Olivia D'Abo)

Fresh off her run as the free-spiritied hippie big sister on The Wonder Years , the charmingly crooked-toothed beauty appeared on The Next Generation 's "True Q" as a young woman who thought she was human, but was actually an all-powerful Q. She's supposedly enamored of Riker, but she actually has better chemistry with John de Lancie as Q than anyone not named Patrick Stewart.

The Borg Queen (Alice Krige)

Attempt number one to make the Borg somehow alluring, in an H.R. Giger sort of way, was a success. The Borg Queen's seduction of Data in First Contact doesn't make a whole hell of a lot of sense in terms of plot logic, but Krige's purring menace sells it.

Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan)

Of course, it's a lot easier to make the Borg alluring if you lose all those cables, flashing lights and deathly pale makeup. And if you cast a gorgeous, curvaceous blonde in the role, as Ryan was cast in Voyager , and put her in a skintight catsuit instead of, oh, a Starfleet uniform or something silly like that. Assimilation never looked so good.

Top 10 Best Female Star Trek Characters

Top 10 Best Female Star Trek Characters

To boldly go where no man, or woman for that matter, has gone before. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Female Star Trek Characters. For this list, we’re looking at the most iconic and empowering female characters from the “Star Trek” franchise.

Star Trek Actors: Where Are They Now?

Star Trek Actors: Where Are They Now?

Being the first Vulcan to serve such a long term on a human starship and doing it years before the Federation existed was both a distinction and a challenge that T’Pol adapts to. Torn between her loyalty to the Enterprise crew and to the Vulcan High Command, she lets her bigger loyalty to logic and the truth guide her. She is an expert fighter, stoic and clever when in command, but also proved, when her mother died, that Vulcans do have emotion even if they don't show them often.

Her official job description may be ship’s bartender, but that doesn’t stop her from speaking truth to power and even stabbing the omnipotent Q with a fork when needed. She is an alien from a long-lived species shrouded in mystery and her unique knowledge, wisdom, and point of view earned her the trust of the crew and commanding officers of the USS Enterprise-D, to the point where Captain Picard will even trust her when she tells him something is off with the whole universe and he needs to fix it.

#8: Carol Marcus

She's the scientist who created the Genesis Device, a key plot for “The Wrath of Khan,” which carried over to “The Search for Spock.” This doctor is brilliant, principled, and fights for what she believes in and - oh yeah, she's also Kirk's ex and the mother of his son. We get to meet a younger version of her in “Into Darkness.” Also a scientist, this Carol Marcus is mostly interested in figuring out what her admiral father is up to and ultimately helping to stop him.

#7: B'Elanna Torres

Top 3 secrets & easter-eggs from star trek discovery mid season premiere.

Top 3 Secrets & Easter-Eggs from Star Trek Discovery Mid Season Premiere

She may be half-Klingon, but she prefers working with engines and technology to becoming a warrior. She may also be half-human, but left Starfleet Academy to join the Maquis only to become chief engineer of a Federation starship many light years from home. While her fiery temper may have calmed over the years, both her sarcasm and dedication to the Voyager crew have strengthened. She has also formed close bonds with crewmembers she initially shunned, eventually declaring her love for Tom Paris under the most extreme circumstances, then marrying and having a baby with him.

#6: Kira Nerys

While a former terrorist may not be the most likely choice for second officer on a Federation-run space station, this Major in the Bajoran Militia, who gets promoted to Colonel by the end of “Deep Space Nine,” is surely the best choice. She is one of the most complex main characters “Trek” has offered us. She can put her past aside and help out former enemies if it is for the greater good and work for someone without letting her deeply held religious beliefs get in the way.

#5: Deanna Troi

When you can tell what people are feeling and are naturally a compassionate person, a ship’s counselor is a rather smart career choice and it’s one that this half-Betazoid, half-human made when she joined Starfleet. Deanna Troi has proven that she can handle aggressive aliens trying to probe her mind, problems that the Enterprise crew are experiencing, her on-again, off-again relationship with Riker, and even being kidnapped, surgically altered, and forced to impersonate a Romulan intelligence officer. The one thing she's never ready for, though, is a visit from her overbearing mother, Lwaxana.

#4: Seven of Nine

Top 3 things you missed in the star trek discovery premiere.

Top 3 Things You Missed in the Star Trek Discovery Premiere

When it comes to messed up backstories, it doesn't get more intense than being assimilated by the Borg as a child, growing up as a drone, and then getting disconnected from the hive mind as an adult. The result is a Voyager crewmember with more technical and tactical knowledge than anyone on the ship, but that struggles to form relationships, adapt to human customs, and fight the urge to return to the Borg Collective. Seven of Nine's presence on Voyager leads to some funny moments and others that are quite serious and touching, plus quite a bit of action.

#3: Beverly Crusher

Top 10 memorable beverly hills, 90210 moments.

Top 10 Memorable Beverly Hills, 90210 Moments

She’s an excellent doctor, a caring mother, a curious scientist, and a good friend to the Enterprise-D crew. She is principled and steadfast in her convictions and can even show compassion for a Borg drone. Her strong-willed nature means she has no problem speaking her mind, even letting Captain Picard know when she thinks he is wrong. She can debate the meaning of life with an android or teach him how to dance, but is just as readily able to act as a negotiator and peacemaker with aliens when the situation calls for it. She is a real 24th century renaissance woman.

#2: Kathryn Janeway

She can be a tough as nails commanding officer and a compassionate leader who cares for her crew. “Star Trek’s” first major female captain was also the one who faced the most impossible odds, stranded 70,000 light-years from earth, managing a new crew half comprised of former Maquis terrorists, and dealing with alien races no Starfleet officer had encountered before. She didn’t back down when faced with the Borg and even formed a temporary alliance with them to fight a bigger foe. As long as she had her morning cup of coffee, everything was under control. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honourable mentions: Jadzia Dax Borg Queen Tasha Yar

#1: Nyota Uhura

She's the original “Trek” female lead and after a whole series, several films, and two different women portraying her, she’s shown no signs of slowing down. Uhura is tough, smart, and always ready to help out the Enterprise crew. She is also witty and can be sarcastic, meaning she is as fit for comic relief as she is for action or Trek-level serious introspection. Above all, this Starfleet communications officer is an expert communicator and one we hope to hear more from as “Trek” continues.

11 Awesome Women of Star Trek

Share the Universe!

Did you know that Star Trek has some of the most phenomenal women playing different roles? Since the show made its debut back in the 1960s, viewers continue to watch amazing women play crucial roles. They exude strength and are inspiring to many generations that continue to enjoy the show.

Today, many women emulate the awesome women of Star Trek who’ve managed to keep the show diverse and intriguing. You notice fans wearing a costume similar to the uniforms the women wear in Star Trek.

Here are the most awesome women of Star Trek :

1. Lily Sloane

Lily Sloane

Lily Sloane is among the most prominent women of Star Trek to date. Her character continues to inspire generations who watch the show from the start to date. She was prominently featured in the Star Trek movie First Contact when her name blew up.

It all began with her spending time with Zafram Cochrane as he worked on a substantial project. He wanted to find a way to be a pioneer in creating a warp-driven spacecraft that would revolutionize the times and change history. Not only was that a great ambition, but such a creation would phenomenally impact the Earth and every other living thing.

But Lily got injured and fell unconscious during this time. It was up to Crusher to rush her to the Enterprise where her life would be okay. Crusher hoped it wasn’t too late for her because her situation was getting critical with every passing moment.

Only things got worse when the ship got attacked as she was getting the help she needed to regain consciousness. She came too as all hell broke loose and, in panic, escaped from those around, not sure who to trust at that moment.

Her panic state made her unpredictable when she took Picard hostage until she was sure she was on the Enterprise then let him go. After that, she realized that the Borg was the real threat and joined in the fight against it. It was the only way to make it out alive as the attack raged on.

Picard was becoming unhinged due to the Borg’s destruction, but Lily managed to help her see hope. With all the crew ready and willing to fight to the end, the Borg wouldn’t win. This not only saved the remaining team but Earth too from any further destruction.

Some women of Star Trek uniforms you can add to a collection include Rubie’s Women’s Star Trek Discovery Command Costume .

2. Seven of Nine

7-of-9

Her costume of choice was a catsuit, and she brought on a certain sex appeal to the show needed at the time. Her role is widely known as a means for the show to attract more male viewers who would otherwise never be interested in it. The show needed to expand its audience reach and grow numbers.

But she managed to turn the tables on the ridiculous expectations set on her shoulders and become one of the strongest female characters in the history of Star Trek. She no longer played a mere role as a sex object but a role model to many aspiring, strong women of all ages worldwide.

Her role begins while traveling with her parents at the tender age of 6. She was assimilated to become a Borg but later gained her freedom thanks to Captain Janeway.

Her journey to being human again made her realize her terrible role as a Borg and the pain she’d caused. All these made her into a strong person who managed to save the ship twice, drawing strength from her strong spirit. She earned her place as one of the top women of Star Trek .

3. Kira Nerys

Kira Nerys

Her role in the great Star Trek show was purely to bring an element of conflict that would have viewers glued to the screen. The creators saw a chance to bring in a character who wore a uniform with a different color. She was a match for the Federation Captain, and her purpose was evident from the start.

She stuck to her guns from the start, given her past as a resistant group leader. Though her current position was that of a liaison officer, she still had the spirit of a freedom fighter deep down. Also, she had no trust in politics and instead held fast to her religion.

Kira wasn’t only empty talk since all she said she could easily back with action earning her a spot among the most awesome women of Star Trek . Everywhere she turned, her beliefs met endless challenges, but she never once backed down. However, she grew as a person by learning to be open-minded to positive aspects that were different from what she knew.

4. Kathryn Janeway

Kathryn Janeway

She was officially known as Captain Janeway and was one of the most formidable leaders ever to grace Star Trek. Janeway was known to uphold all the different ideals of the Starfleet and ensured her crew was always safe.

Also, she showed plenty of skill when it came to physical and verbal confrontations while making tough choices. Her crew was held to a higher standard, which she set an example of how she carried herself. Despite her tough exterior, they always knew they could turn to her when facing certain problems, for she was always willing to listen and help.

Who else could match her as one of the most phenomenal women of Star Trek who fought Borg and other enemies while forging new friendships?

Guinan

Guinan played a crucial role in the Enterprise despite being a bartender on the ship, which she played to perfection, earning a spot on the top women list. Many might downplay her role as a minor, but she managed to advise some of the top leaders on crucial matters, and her advice was well received.

Everyone was grateful when her friendship with lonely Ro shed light on a conspiracy that Picard learned about through her. If they didn’t share the deep connection, things would not have worked out as they did.

Her origins were from El-Aurian, but her people were scattered everywhere by the heartless Borg. However, she was not one to mess with, and even Q knew so explaining why she’s among the top women of Star Trek .

To better understand her strength, you’ll notice that she played a major role in stopping a rebellion in Ten Forward. Most of the people had serious sleep deprivation leading to the unrest. She shot a few beams from her energy beam rifle, which solved the matter.

6. K’Ehleyr

Though she died earlier on, Star Trek fans will forever remember her character with fondness. Her role began when she was on the Enterprise to find a way to handle an issue with a ship of Klingons.

They were under the presumption that the Federation and Klingon were still at war, but an alliance was in place. Finally, she managed to calm the water when the Klingons lowered their weapons and permitted her to board their ship.

However, she had an edge to her, which contributed to her death at the hands of Duras. Duras was contending to take on the position of Klingon chancellor but was involved in a conspiracy. To keep it a secret, one of the strongest women of Star Trek had to die.

7. Captain Rachel Garrett

Captain Rachel Garrett

She is the only female captain of the Enterprise in charge of the Enterprise C. Enterprise C came forth during the 24-century mid-battle when a temporal rift occurred. This changed history forever, and the Enterprise was now in the middle of a war.

Despite trying hard to keep the occurrence a secret, Picard pressed for answers about when and where they were. Captain Rachel learned that her ship needed to be defeated and accepted without a second thought to this sacrifice to save thousands more.

Her perfect example of sacrifice was emulated by her crew, making her among the most awesome women of Star Trek .

8. Naomi Wildman

Naomi Wildman

Being an only child in a ship full of grown-ups was easy for Naomi Wildman. She liked being the only kid around but always ensured she pulled her weight. Her favorite part of it was assisting the captain and also studying everything she could find.

Her quest for perfection made her mirror the person she most feared, who was Seven of Nine. Her fear would be short-lived after having to face it and come clean about her goals. The two became more than just friends but had a great relationship as colleagues.

She continued to prove herself worthy of her friendship with Seven of Nine, making it to the list of most phenomenal women of Star Trek .

Natira

You would be forgiven for mistaking Natira as a follower of given rules from her first appearances on the show. All her orders came from an oracle, and she was the high priestess of Yonada. Though she believed in the oracle and obeyed commands, she also followed her heart.

Her spirit began to shine once she met McCoy, who only had a year to live. She proposed that he spend the year with her, which he accepted. Later on, she’d discover all the lies about everything she believed in.

Natira’s strength would shine when she learned of the oracle’s deception of her location. She was on a ship and not a planet. Despite it all, she chose to remain on board for her people when McCoy suggested they leave together.

10. Ro Laren

Ro Laren

Ro Laren was brought up in a refugee camp during the Cardassian occupation, where she saw too much pain and torture. Her most horrific memory of those days was when her father was tortured to death during an investigation by a Cardassian. She held that memory close, and it’s what drove her strong spirit and helped her survive trying times.

Her assignment to the Enterprise was under false pretenses, which Guinan found out. She encouraged Ro Laren to tell Picard the truth, and she eventually did in hopes that she wouldn’t get in trouble. Her truth saved the Maquis, who were caught up in a conspiracy that would blame them for an attack. If not for her admission, the Maquis were set to stand trial for the situation and take the fall for something they didn’t do.

She would later join the Enterprise crew serving them well but opted to leave after some time for the Maquis. The choice was hard, but it was one she had to make, proving once more how strong her spirit was. Everyone, including Picard, understood her decision, and it’s why she’s one of the most awesome women of Star Trek .

11. Edith Keeler

Edith Keeler

No one can deny that Edith was a visionary who ran a soup kitchen providing a warm meal during the tough times of the Great Depression. The soup kitchen was in New York, one of the places hardest hit by the depression.  She was able to predict great times in history when humanity would harness incredible energies.

These energies would make space travel possible, and those who took part would learn how to feed millions of starving people. She had the right concept of the changes the world needed but was killed before starting an American peace movement that would’ve prevented WW2.

Edith truly was one of the most amazing women of Star Trek who was ahead of her time in many ways. She foretold the atomic bomb and space travel before it happened.

Meet the women of Star Trek: Picard

Picard and Dahj in Star Trek: Picard

Star Trek: Picard is one of the most anticipated series of 2020, and for good reason: It brings back a fan-favorite character in an entirely new situation. Jean-Luc Picard is no longer in Starfleet, and it's clear that his parting wasn't exactly amicable. He's on his own, on a new mission (the circumstances of which are quite unclear), but without the resources he once had.

Like any Star Trek show, Picard has an amazing supporting cast — and there are quite a few incredible women on the roster. (As an aside, I've seen the first three episodes, and there are quite a few more women than are listed here, but won't be spoiling anything for anxious viewers.)

Here's what we know about the major female characters in advance of tomorrow's premiere.

Isa Briones as Dahj in Star Trek: Picard

Credit: James Dimmock/CBS

Dahj (Isa Briones)

Dahj, played by Isa Briones (who was Peggy Schuyler in the touring production of Hamilton and was the understudy for Eliza), might be the biggest mystery of Star Trek: Picard . The little we know about her tells us she’s a vulnerable young woman in some kind of serious trouble — but also, judging from the trailer, she has pretty incredible abilities. Speculation is that she’s somehow tied to the Borg, considering the cast list, or Data, because Brent Spiner is guest-starring in the show. Who (and what) Dahj is will likely play a central role in the series.

Alison Pill as Agnes Jurati in Star Trek: Picard

Dr. Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill)

We're not quite sure what role Dr. Jurati will play in Star Trek: Picard , but she’s been described as a doctor who has the same goals as Jean-Luc. Pill is a fantastic actor who has quite a few shows under her belt, and it will be interesting to see how she handles the technobabble (it's not clear whether she's a medical doctor or a scientist). Either way, it’s safe to say she’ll fit in perfectly with this dynamic, brilliant cast.

Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker in Star Trek: Picard

Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd)

Hurd is a television icon, so it’s incredibly exciting that she’s bringing her exceptional talent to the Star Trek universe. She plays Raffi Musiker, someone who worked with Picard in his post- The Next Generation , post- Nemesis days. Hurd teased in an interview that Raffi is "haunted," and promotional material has described her as an addict. It will be very interesting to see how Raffi fits into the larger story, and what kind of pain she’s trying to mask with her vices.

Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Picard

Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan)

We last saw Seven of Nine, the former Borg, in the series finale of Star Trek: Voyager . Over 20 years later, what is she up to? And why is Picard, who hasn’t previously met her onscreen, looking Seven up now? We don’t know the answers to these questions — Seven has clearly embraced a more human (and dare we say badass) look in the previews. But we don’t know what she’s been doing, though the inclusion of Jonathan del Arco as Hugh in the cast lets us know that Picard has a Borg connection. In an interview, Jeri Ryan made it clear that she’s not even allowed to say whether Seven still goes by her Borg designation or has chosen a new name. There’s quite a bit of mystery surrounding her appearance in the show, but given what an amazing character she is, it’s safe to say we’re excited for it.

Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis)

At the end of Star Trek: Nemesis , Deanna Troi was leaving the Enterprise, as her new husband, William Riker, had finally accepted a command of his own. Now, two decades later, they both seem to be enjoying retirement (and raising their children!). It seems as though they have opted for a simpler life, but it isn't clear how that came about. Did they decide to retire to start a family, or were they involved in the situation that led to Picard leaving Starfleet? Only time will tell!

Laris (Orla Brady)

Laris is a brand-new Romulan character (she could also be Vulcan based on appearances, but judging from the fact that Laris laughs in the clip we've seen and that the storyline seems to concern the Romulans, I feel safe making this judgment call). She and Zhaban, who appears to be Laris' partner, seem to be companions or helpers for Picard on his French vineyard.

Star Trek's Strongest Supporting Women Characters

Beyond the Captain Janeways, Dr. Crushers, and Major Kiras, there has always been strong women in Star Trek.

Illustrated collage featuring Star Trek's Number One, Kasidy Yates, Carol Marcus, Ro Laren, Lursa, Edith Keeler, Rachel Garrett, and Lily Sloane

StarTrek.com

While the Star Trek franchise reached its pinnacle with Kate Mulgrew's fantastic portrayal of Captain Janeway, it began earlier with the truly revolutionary casting of Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura. While one can nitpick and say she was subservient to the boys (and there's definitely an argument to be made), the very fact that an African American woman was seen on the Bridge had a direct impact on the viewing public. (Just ask Whoopi Goldberg!)

As Women's History Month comes to a close, let's take a look back — beyond the Dr. Crushers and Major Kiras — to some of the less-obvious strong women characters in the history of Star Trek .

10. Captain Kasidy Yates

Close-up of Kasidy Yates as she smiles over at Ben Sisko in 'The Way of the Warrior'

"The Way of the Warrior"

It takes a special kind of woman to win the heart of a space station commander, military leader, and Emissary to the Prophets. Kasidy Yates is that women.

She's a hardworking cargo ship captain (engaging in some light and mostly benign smuggling on the side) who refuses special treatment when caught or when it’s time to pitch in against the Dominion. Plus, she likes baseball. Yeah, Kasidy is awesome — let Sisko do the cooking!

9. Yeoman Leslie Thompson

Yeoman Leslie Thompson beams down to a planet's surface with the away team in 'By Any Other Name'

"By Any Other Name"

Okay, an odd pick, sure, but hear me out 'cause this is important.

How much was The Original Series in the vanguard? They were willing to have women beam down to planets as part of armed away teams. And sometimes (okay, once) they were willing to kill them off. Pretty radical!

Yeoman Thompson was the redshirt who was turned into the giant chalk Dungeons & Dragons cube and then crushed to death by that jerk from the Andromeda Galaxy in " By Any Other Name ."

8. Romulan Commander

The Romulan commander sits comfortably in her seat in 'The Enterprise Incident'

"The Enterprise Incident"

Nobody said they all had to be good guys!

While ultimately unsuccessful, the unnamed Romulan Commander from The Original Series ' "The Enterprise Incident" was cunning enough that it took the wits of both Kirk and Spock to take her down.

She had ambition and drive, as well as the courage to sacrifice herself for the good of the Romulan Empire. And did she actually get under Spock's Vulcan skin a little bit? That's up to your interpretation.

7. Lily Sloane

Close-up of Lily Sloane on the surface of Earth in Bozeman as she looks up to the sky in Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek: First Contact

Blow up the damn ship!

Lily Sloane, Star Trek: First Contact

It takes a lot of sand to say — to SHOUT — something like that to Jean-Luc Picard, as Lily Sloane does in Star Trek: First Contact . And to kinda be right? Even more so.

Most civilians from a pre-Warp era would just be freaking out that time traveling humans and aliens are bombarding Earth, but this sharp engineer keeps her head enough to offer military advice.

Close-up of Lursa as she holds a cup in 'Redemption'

"Redemption"

The true mastermind of the Klingon Civil War, the machinations of Lursa of the House of Duras left the galaxy quaking for whole seasons. Even with all this going on, she found time to be a mother. Awww, right?

Also, her death in Star Trek Generations was cooler than Kirk's. Sadly, it was WAY cooler.

(Feel free to argue with me that Kai Winn shoulda got the "political puppet master" slot. It was a close call.)

5. Captain Rachel Garrett

Captain Rachel Garrett looks up while on the bridge of the Enterprise-C in 'Yesterday's Enterprise'

"Yesterday's Enterprise"

From Star Trek: The Next Generation 's " Yesterday's Enterprise ," a serious contender for best single episode ever in any series, we meet the captain of the Enterprise -C, Rachel Garrett . And we don't even KNOW that it is due to her bravery and sacrifice that the current timeline is as breezy and upbeat as it is today. (Guinan kinda knows, but that's complicated.)

Tricia O'Neal's strong-yet-still-feminine portrayal of a starship captain no doubt paved the way toward Captain Janeway, another reason to offer her a hero's salute.

4. Dr. Carol Marcus

Carol Marcus pensively glances over in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

The woman who held, at least for a time, the heart of James Tiberius Kirk. But Dr. Marcus is no mere Captain's squeeze. She is an independent woman and a brilliant scientist whose Genesis Device is so powerful it was the focus of two movies!!

She also represents one of the very few times you'll see someone have a bone of contention with Starfleet prior to the creation of the Maquis.

(Again, here's your opportunity to scream at me for leaving a different brilliant scientist, Dr. Leah Brahms , off the list. This is hard work, people! And thankless, too. I felt the heat the other day for not including the Salt Vampire from TOS or the corpses from TNG ’s “ Night Terrors ” in my column about Trek ’s freakiest moments.)

3. Number One

Number One sits at her station on the bridge of the Enterprise in 'The Cage'

"The Cage"

Captain Pike's steady-as-a-rock first officer, Number One, was a brilliant tactician who wasn't afraid to bring out the laser cannons, or to sacrifice herself with an overloaded phaser rather than suffer indignities at the hands of the Talosians.

If you think her story ended with "The Cage," oh, how wrong you are. Drop everything and read John Byrne's fantastic comic series Star Trek: Crew to see Number One's really whacked-out adventures both pre- and post- her time on the Enterprise . Then pick up some of Peter David's New Frontier novels and focus on the Morgana Prime character. (I was there at New York Comic-Con a few years ago when David basically admitted that Morgana - Robin Lefler's mother - was actually Number One!)

In addition, Number One's adventure continues aboard Pike's Enterprise on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

2. Ro Laren

Close-up of Ro Laren in Star Trek: The Next Generation - Preemptive Strike

"Preemptive Strike"

[ RELATED : Everything You Need to Know About Ro Laren ]

One of the richest figures in Star Trek , the Bajoran nationalist was the first character we ever met whose antipathy toward Starfleet ever seemed justified. Still, her loyalty to Captain Picard kept her in line... most of the time.

Ro Laren was such a badass that even the woman who played her, Michelle Forbes, had to swim upstream. She rejected the offer to be a lead on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , causing the show's producers to create the (at first) somewhat similar character of Kira Nerys. Ultimately, it worked out for the best, but, oh, if only we could glimpse into that alternate timeline!

But to hold that desire ever, don't miss Ro Laren's confrontation with Picard 30+ years after the fact in Star Trek: Picard .

1. Edith Keeler

Close-up of Edith Keeler with a street light shining on her at night in 'The City on the Edge of Forever'

"The City on the Edge of Forever"

Imagine a woman whose soup is so powerful it could change the course of World War II.

In " The City on the Edge of Forever ," it is this loving, warm, and caring pacifist who must be silenced for evil not to conquer the world. (Blame Harlan Ellison; he's the sicko that thought of it!) Edith Keeler isn't just a character; she's a philosophical construct, a topic worthy of intellectual debate that the finest scholars could argue about for ages. And just thinking about her (and the phrase "He knows, Doctor. He knows.") is enough to send an army of Star Trek fans blubbering.

47 Badass Women of Star Trek

The Beat is celebrating Women’s History Month with some of Trek’s most badass women.

To celebrate Women’s History Month here at Stately Beat Manor, we’ve put together a list of 47 badass women of Star Trek!

This list is nowhere near exhaustive. Did we miss your favorite? Let us know! The Beat is waiting to hear from you, right here in the comment section or over on social media @comicsbeat .

Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols & Celia Rose Gooding)

Uhura on Star Trek

When the first episode of Star Trek: The Original Series first aired, communications officer Nyota Uhura was there on the bridge! A key player in all three seasons of TOS , Uhura continued to make an impression on the bridge of the Enterprise in the sequel series, Star Trek: The Animated Series . In fact, TAS even allowed Uhura to take command of the Enterprise in one episode!

Uhura also appeared in all 6 of the TOS cast movies. And in Star Trek: Picard season 2, background details revealed she became a Starfleet Captain, commanding the first ship on which Jean-Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ) served. On Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Gooding gives us a look of Uhura’s early days on the Enterprise .

Lwaxana Troi (Majel Barrett-Roddenberry)

star trek hottest female characters

Originally making her debut on Star Trek: The Next Generation , Lwaxana may have managed to top these memorable appearances when she heavily flirted with the rule-abiding shapeshifter Odo ( René Auberjonois ) on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . Regrettably, Barrett-Roddenberry died before the debut of Star Trek: Lower Decks , a venue that would have provided an incredible stage for Lwaxana.

“My mother’s joy came from bringing Lwaxana Troi to life because they didn’t write that character for her, but that was her being herself. She wouldn’t let anyone put her in her place. She was over the top, and she was flamboyant. When push came to shove, she would shove back,” said Rod Roddenberry about his mother’s favorite role in the Star Trek franchise in an interview with Geek Girl Authority .

Vice Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew)

star trek hottest female characters

On Star Trek: Voyager , Captain Kathryn Janeway gave us our first leading lady commander. Over the course of all seven seasons, Janeway fearlessly guided her wayward crew back to Earth from the Delta Quadrant. Meanwhile, she consumed a lot of coffee and conducted experiments that revolutionized many areas of Starfleet science upon Voy ’s return.

A few years after the conclusion of Voyager , on Star Trek: Prodigy , two different versions of Janeway play key roles. While the Emergency Training Hologram Janeway guides the young crew of the USS Protostar , Vice Admiral Janeway plays a game of cat-and-mouse with the misunderstood crew.

Michael Burnam (Sonequa Martin-Green)

star trek hottest female characters

Burnham didn’t start in the center chair on Star Trek: Discovery , and since the start of the series, we’ve seen her under the command of Captains that span the competence spectrum. Fortunately, that’s all behind us now, as a leap to the far-flung future at the outset of season 3 has allowed Captain Burnham to take her rightful place at the top of Disco ’s chain of command.

Time and again, Burnham demonstrates her competent leadership in matters personal and professional. Equally impressive is Martin-Green’s work on the series behind the camera, which earned her a producer credit for the show’s fourth season.

Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan)

star trek hottest female characters

After being rescued from the Borg on Voyager , Seven was integrated into the Voy crew under the tutelage and guidance of Captain Janeway. After returning to the Alpha Quadrant with the crew, Seven attempted to join Starfleet, but was rejected. She instead became a defender of the innocent by joining the Fenris Rangers.

On Picard , Seven’s ongoing involvement with Admiral Picard’s adventures led to her successful conscription into Starfleet. As the First Officer aboard the USS Titan-A in Picard season 3, Seven plays an important role during a crucial mission.

D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells)

star trek hottest female characters

As one of the first Orion ever to enlist in Starfleet, Tendi is truly going boldly where no one has gone before! Orion slave girls were originally introduced in the original pilot of TOS.   While other Orion women have appeared in Star Trek  shows since then, Tendi represents a major step forward in the depiction of the alien species.

In Lower Decks season 3, Tendi begins to accept her Orion heritage and her career gets fast-tracked due to her ongoing Science Officer training. And thanks to a holodeck movie, she can finally see herself in the role of Captain for the first time. Tendi is both the dreamer and the dream. She deserves all the pesto she can eat!

Hoshi Sato (Linda Park)

star trek hottest female characters

On the bridge of the NX-01 Enterprise on Star Trek: Enterprise , Hoshi serves an important role in humanity’s fledging steps into the stars. As linguist, her role is fundamental to the communications abilities of the crew under Captain Jonathan Archer ( Scott Bakula ).

In the Mirror Universe, Hoshi also plays an important role. After murdering Mirror Archer, she becomes the first Terran Emperor. In the opening pages of Star Trek: Discovery: Die Standing by John Jackson Miller , Emperor Sato is quoted: “I started as an educator. The lesson I teach today: it takes only one Terran to turn reality upside down, and change the future…”

Nurse Christine Chapel (Majel Barrett-Roddenberry & Jess Bush)

star trek hottest female characters

First appearing in 1966’s TOS episode “The Naked Time,” Gene Roddenberry snuck his wife Majel on to the CBS set in a blonde wig and cast her as the badass essential worker of the Enterprise, Nurse Chapel. Before she spent time pining over Science Officer Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ) and bandaging up a whiney Captain James T. Kirk ( William Shatner ), Chapel earned several advanced degrees to become a bio-researcher.

Did I mention she’s queer AF? By the time Star Trek: The Motion Picture rolls around, she’s not only queer AF, but she’s also a queer AF doctor.

T’Pol (Jolene Blalock)

star trek hottest female characters

As the first Vulcan to serve aboard a starship helmed by humans, T’Pol had to put up with a lot—especially that human odor. Once she got used to the smell, T’Pol’s time with the hoo-mans proved invaluable, and she learned to stand up for herself even when it went against the wishes of the High Command. While falling in love and making babies certainly doesn’t make you great, boldly going to home base with Chief Engineer Trip Tucker is a story for the herstory books!

Una Chin-Riley (Majel Barrett-Roddenberry & Rebecca Romijin)

star trek hottest female characters

Una, or simply “Number One,” first appeared in the original TOS pilot. However, her part was cut from the series. Barrett-Roddenberry was subsequently recast, both as the aforementioned Nurse Chapel and the Enterprise computer. Later, on TAS , she also played the original Caitian, communications officer M’Ress.

Meanwhile, SNW is finally giving Una the chance for further development. Over the course of the first season, we learned that Una is a genetic augment. This means she’s barred from Starfleet service, and has enlisted under false pretenses. Just how this engaging ongoing storyline plays out remains to be seen, and the character’s absence during TOS lends tension to the dangling plot thread.

Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis)

star trek hottest female characters

As the Captain of a California-class ship, Freeman doesn’t always get the respect that she’s earned. However, that never stops her from fully committing to performing her duties as a Starfleet officer. This includes when she’s facing sarcastic Vulcan salutes from her daughter and dealing with one of those Starfleet Badmirals that seem to show up so often.

Time and again, Freeman proves that the support ships are just as important to the continued operation of the Federation as any flagship could be. And besides, the Cerritos is kind of like the Enterprise of the Cali-class. Cerritos strong!

Philipa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh)

star trek hottest female characters

Georgiou Prime was a decorated Starfleet Captain in her own right. However, she dies early on in the series. We get a much better chance to get to know Mirror Georgiou over the course of the character’s multi-season role on Discovery .

After being dragged into our universe, the sharp-tongued and shockingly intelligent Mirror Georgiou winds up joining the secret Starfleet division Section 31. While the character is currently MIA after stepping through the Guardian of Forever, the Star Trek: Section 31  spinoff starring Mirror Georgiou reportedly remains in development.

Dr. Gillian Taylor (Catherine Hicks)

star trek hottest female characters

In Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , Dr. Taylor is a whale biologist who works for the Cetacean Institute in Sausalito, California in 1986. She plays an important role in ensuring humpback whales George and Gracie are able to travel back to the future at the climax of the movie.

Once she arrives in the future, it appears as though Taylor makes a splash herself. In Lower Decks , the logo for the Cetacean Ops division aboard the Cerritos borrows heavily from the 1980s logo for the Cetacean Institute. This heavily implies that Taylor’s work plays an important role in the development of this popular field of study.

Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor)

star trek hottest female characters

Nerys can go toe-to-toe with anyone: Cardassian prison warden and fascist despot Gul Dukat, fellow rage-fueled Bajoran freedom fighter Lieutenant Shax, and even a pansexual Mirror Universe version of herself.

On Lower Decks , it is revealed that in the wake of Captain Benjamin Sisko ( Avery Brooks ) becoming a wormhole alien god, Nerys took over as commander of Deep Space 9.

Jadzia Dax & Ezri Dax (Terry Farrell & Nicole de Boer)

star trek hottest female characters

Jadzia and Ezri are the two Trill hosts of the Dax symbiote who play an important role in the events of DS9 . In events that took place before the series, a former male host of the symbiote was good friends with Captain Sisko. This adds an extra dimension to the relationship between Jadzia and Sisko, who affectionately refers to her as “old man.”

Regrettably, Jadzia is murdered by the despicable Gul Dukat in the penultimate season of DS9 . However, this does give the opportunity for us to meet Ezri, who proves to offer a hitherto unseen perspective on the proceedings that take place on the space station.

Rok-Tahk (Rylee Alazraqui)

star trek hottest female characters

As the youngest Federation crew member on this list, Rok-Tahk, a refugee from Brikar, is a genius with a pension for all of the scientific disciplines and a heart of gold. Every planet that Rok-Tahk visits proves that she’ll do anything for creatures great and small, even risk her life.

Read Rebecca Oliver Kaplan’s interview with Alazraqui here .

Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis)

star trek hottest female characters

While Picard may keep his Number One close at hand, he keeps his counselor, Troi, equally close. Over the course of TNG , this proves to be the best possible decision, as Troi’s insight regularly proves invaluable in the conflicts faced by the Enterprise-D .

In spite of serving on a Federation ship, Troi rarely wears a regulation Starfleet uniform. However, this sartorial decision demonstrates that the flagship’s counselor is beyond competent, whether she’s wearing a Starfleet uniform or not!

Gwyndala (Ella Purnell)

star trek hottest female characters

A genetic clone created by her father, The Diviner ( John Noble ), Gwyn was literally designed to unite her people, the Vau N’Akat. Over the course of Star Trek: Prodigy ’s first season, Gwyn found her way to her purpose, a complex journey that is still in progress.

Just how Gwyn will play into future seasons remains to be seen. Nevertheless, as an initial antagonist who became part of the core crew of the Protostar, Gwyn carries on and embodies some of the most important themes from Janeway’s former crew aboard Voy.

Doctor T’Ana (Gillian Vigman)

star trek hottest female characters

When she was first introduced on Lower Decks , T’Ana could be considered “a cat in a coat,” as Ensign Fletcher unfavorably dubs her. However as the character has revealed more of herself to audiences, she has become a fan favorite.

Part of her undeniable appeal comes from her passionate romance with Bajorian beefcake Shax. Better yet, while T’Ana is an undeniably sexual character, she’s never subjected to the male gaze. When it comes to T’Ana, the gaze subjects you.

B’Elanna Torres (Roxann Dawson)

star trek hottest female characters

There aren’t very many role models if you’re a women with suicidal ideation , especially in STEM. As a former Federation foe and Maquis Resistance fighter, when the Maquis ship that Torres was stationed on and Voyager get stranded in the Delta Quadrant, she must adapt to Starfleet rules and regulations after she’s named Chief Engineer.

It’s not an easy journey for the Klingon-Human engineer—in fact, she almost commits suicide before the starship finds its way back to Earth—but in the end, she discovers a will to live and the strength within herself to keep fighting against impossible odds.

Oh, and she’ll always have Tom Paris.

Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman)

star trek hottest female characters

Who’s hot for teacher? Every single cadet whose had the pleasure of having Professor Tilly. Not only is Professor Tilly a science genius who programmed the food replicator to produce only spumoni ice cream by calculating the exact protein concentration and small particle dispersion of emulsifiers required, but she also knows how to whip out her survival training skills at the drop of a shuttle. In the 32nd century, she saves several cadets when a training mission goes south.

Me Hani Ika Hali Po (Yadira Guevara-Prip)

star trek hottest female characters

Thanks to Tilly’s spumoni ice cream, Po, Queen of Xahea, saves galaxies. That may be putting their storyline simply, but Tilly and Po are proof positive of the power of female friendships. With a mother who encouraged her to be extraordinary and brother who taught her science, Po eventually develops a dilithium incubator that enables recrystalization of the mineral, making her world the most politically-relevant planet in the Alpha Quadrant. Luckily, thanks to the Queen’s relationship with Tilly, Po and Xahea remain safe.

Jett Reno (Tig Notaro)

star trek hottest female characters

Reno crashed on a planet with the rest of her crew. As the ship’s only surviving crew member, she had to put all of her skills as an engineer to work to survive until the Disco  rescued her. A few seasons later, she saved the day with licorice—yes, licorice—and her finely honed wit.

La’An Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong)

star trek hottest female characters

The descendant of Khan Noonien Singh, one of Star Trek ‘s most notorious villains, La’An showed that she’s more than in her genes in the first season of SNW . Hopefully, La’An will be writing a ‘How to Slay the Gorn’ manual sometime in the future.

Read Avery Kaplan’s interview with Chong here .

Doctor Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill)

star trek hottest female characters

A cyberneticist at the Daystrom Institute who becomes wrapped up in Picard’s misadventures in the first and second seasons of Picard , Jurati eventually merges with an alternate-timeline Borg Queen ( Annie Wersching ). After performing a show-stealing rendition of “Shadows of the Night,” the mind-merged duo goes on to become the first member of a new kind of Borg: the Jurati Collective.

The Jurati Collective is currently guarding a massive tear in space-time that tore open in the season premiere and finale of Picard ’s second season. While she does not appear in Picard ’s third season, we’ll hopefully hear more from this intriguing new evolution of Jurati soon.

Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome)

star trek hottest female characters

While she may not be a fan of protocol, Mariner is still Starfleet through and through! As the self-appointed boss of Beta Shift, Mariner sometimes instigates chaos in the name of “building character.” But at the end of the day, nothing’s more important to her than her family, chosen or biological.

Over the course of the third season of Lower Decks, Mariner was in a relationship with Jen the Andorian ( Lauren Lapkus ). However, it’s unclear if this coupling will recur in season 4. Plus, we’re looking forward to seeing how Mariner mixes with new Cerritos arrival T’Lyn ( Gabrielle Ruiz ).

President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal)

star trek hottest female characters

Rillak is a politician who was elected president of the Federation of Planets in 3190. While in this position, she faced a sweeping tragedy that challenged her leadership: the advent of the Dark Matter Anomaly. Fortunately, Rillak is a strong and competent leader who helps keep the Federation together during this difficult interval. At the conclusion of the season, she and Captain Burnham welcome Earth back into the Federation.

Doctor Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden)

star trek hottest female characters

Originally introduced in the first episode of TNG , Crusher was absent during the second season of the series. This is because she left to become the head of Starfleet Medical! The incredibly gifted M.D. returned to the Enterprise-D in the third season and played a key role in many of the adventures undertaken by that ship and its predecessor, the Enterprise-E .

T’Pring (Arlene Martel, Gia Sandhu & Ethan Peck)

star trek hottest female characters

Over the course of the first season of SNW , T’Pring has played an important role in multiple episodes. In one of them, “Spock Amok,” she even temporarily switched bodies with her betrothed and was thus obligated to reluctantly engage in hijinks.

In the TOS episode “Amok Time,” T’Pring executes her right to kal-if-fee in order to break her engagement to Spock, preferring another mate, Stonn. No need to feel bad for Spock, however. He returned to the Enterprise with his boyfriend, Kirk.

Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd)

star trek hottest female characters

Happy Birthday, Raffi! It’s not easy to get clean. It’s especially not easy to get clean in the 25th century, in which designer drugs are tailored to be even more addictive using an ophthalmic drug delivery system, a particularly nasty way to get high that has an added risk of addiction. With drugs designed to each junkie’s taste so that repeat customers don’t turn to another dealer, it’s hard for any 21st and 25th century addict to turn over a new leaf.

Using today’s understanding of substance abuse, rates of addiction are higher in the LGBTQIA+ community because of the political, social, and cultural pressure of being queer in America. This makes Star Trek: Picard’s decision to tell a story of addiction and recovery with a Black bisexual woman extremely relevant to today.

T’Veen (Stephanie Czajkowski)

star trek hottest female characters

T’Veen is the science officer aboard the Titan-A in Picard season 3. The character is part Vulcan and one-quarter Deltan. Deltans are a species first introduced in TMP , and they are renowned for their sensuality. This ensures an intriguing character combination when combined with the repressive nature of most Vulcans.

Laris (Orla Brady)

star trek hottest female characters

Laris is more than the woman who told Picard that he wasn’t worth her waiting around until he got his shit together. She is also a good cook and housekeeper, great Chateau Picard head of security, and excellent former Tal Shiar intelligence officer. As a member of the Romulan intelligence agency, which is known for its ruthless efficiency, Laris would have been responsible for reporting to the highest levels of government and military. Now, she uses her hard-earned Tal Shiar skills to help Picard and Starfleet.

Captain Sonya Gomez (Lycia Naff)

star trek hottest female characters

When we first met Gomez on TNG , she was an Ensign who spilled a considerable amount of hot chocolate on Captain Picard. But when she reappears on Lower Decks , Gomez has not only ranked all the way up to Captain herself, she’s in command of the impressive USS Archimedes , an Obena-class ship.

But lest you think success has gone to Gomez’s head, never fear. In “First First Contact,” she even allows Freeman to conduct First Contact with the Laaperians. “No ego on that one,” remarks an intoxicated Freeman after the event.

Lily Sloane (Alfre Woodard)

star trek hottest female characters

Anyone who can tell Captain Picard to shut up using a Moby Dick reference is a queen. Also, 2064 appears to be as lily-white as 2023, which comes as no surprise as it’s only a couple of decades after Star Trek ‘s Bell Riots. It’s a safe bet to assume that Lily’s indignance towards cis white men is deeply ingrained following years of negative experiences.

Renée Picard (Penelope Mitchell)

star trek hottest female characters

Doctor Picard is the single thread holding together Star Trek ‘s utopian vision of the future. She was already a trauma survivor by age ten, having survived the capsizing of her sailboat of the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. By age 11, this girl genius had taught herself Cantonese, chess, and fluid dynamics. Her passions led her to a career as a test pilot, and from there, she was recruited by NASA to save the Milky Way Galaxy (and our timeline) with a microorganism found on the Europa Mission.

Saavik (Kristie Alley & Robin Curtis)

star trek hottest female characters

Saavik was first introduced in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . In that movie, she became the first person to be seen taking the infamous “Kobayashi Maru” onscreen. She played an important role in the resurrection of the titular Spock in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . She later became the Captain of the first Titan , a fact that is commemorated by a shuttlecraft bearing her name aboard the Titan-A in Picard season 3.

Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg & Ito Aghayere)

star trek hottest female characters

Guinan is the long-(long-)time proprietor of the bar Ten Forward, which has been located in various places, including Los Angeles and aboard the Enterprise-D . She tends bar, and she listens. She is a survivor of the Borg’s assimilation of her species.

Guinan is an invaluable advisor to Picard, and friend to Ensign Ro. Part of her will always be present inside the Nexus due to an event that took place in the first scenes of Star Trek: Generations . Also, she used to hang out with Samuel Clemens.

T’Rina (Tara Rosling)

star trek hottest female characters

T’Rina serves as the President of Ni’Var in the late thirty-second century. She must advocate for the interests of her people during a complicated time in the history of the galaxy, and ultimately leads her world to reenter the Federation. Furthermore, her mind-melding abilities are an integral step towards the ultimate successful First Contact with Species 10-C.

Demora Sulu (Jacqueline Kim)

star trek hottest female characters

Demora first appeared in Generations , where she was an ensign serving as helmsman aboard the maiden voyage of the Enterprise-B . She is the daughter of the legendary helmsman Hikaru Sulu ( George Takei ). According to many prose stories and Star Trek Online canon, Demora would later go on to become Captain of the B .

Chancellor L’Rell (Mary Chieffo)

star trek hottest female characters

Klingons, the warrior race, aren’t exactly known for how they treat their women, but that doesn’t mean that several Klingon women haven’t risen to power on Qo’nos. One of the Klingon women who stands out the most in the planet’s rich history is L’Rell, who united the Klingon houses and was responsible for ending the Federation-Klingon War. Although, like many women in power, Mother L’Rell had to subscribe to a certain aesthetic to maintain her control, but she did it in feminine Elizabethian royal attire.

To learn more, watch the epic Klingon anthem from STO , “ Steel and Flame ,” written by Jason Charles Miller and performed by L’Rell (Chieffo), which describes the Chancellor’s return and rise to power within the Klingon empire.

Grilka (Mary Kay Adams)

star trek hottest female characters

Grilka lives life full tilt, even bucking Klingon tradition to marry a Ferengi. When Quark claimed that he killed Grilka’s husband Kozak, she forced the barkeep to marry her so that she could retain control of her house. Thus, the House of Kozak became the House of Grilka, and feminists everywhere cheered.

While L’Rell may have been born centuries before Grilka, Chieffo’s interpretation of the Klingon Chancellor was inspired by Adams’ performance in DS9 . In an interview with GGA , Chieffo said, “My favorite forever will be Grilka. […] It was a moment of, ‘Oh, it’s still a patriarchal society.’ […] L’Rell had to rise to power, ultimately to Chancellor, which is far more than Grilka got to do, but I’m glad I got to reap some of the benefits of the path she paved.”

Leeta (Chase Masterson)

star trek hottest female characters

A dabo girl, and the OG sexy nerd. Leeta played ignorant before Paris Hilton made it cool. The Bajoran has led more than one rebellion. Not only did she work with the Terran Resistance Forces on Terok Nor, but she also teamed up with the rest of the Quark’s Bar staff to create a labor union.

Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia)

star trek hottest female characters

Ortegas is the helmsman on the Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ). In addition to her impressive piloting skills, Ortegas is the only one with the hair and wit to match Pike’s generous allotment of each asset.

In the SNW episode “The Elysian Kingdom,” Ortegas carries on one a proud Enterprise helmsman tradition: swashbuckling. Touché, Ortegas!

Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes)

star trek hottest female characters

When Ro first joined the crew of the Enterprise-D on TNG , she didn’t exactly face a warm welcome. Nevertheless, Ro managed to earn the respect of the rest of the crew, thanks in part to her friendship with Guinan. However, Ro was never willing to compromise her beliefs in order to fit in. For one thing, she ensured Picard would allow her to bend Starfleet uniform code so she could wear her traditional Bajoran earring.

Ro empathized with the Maquis, and ultimately defected from Starfleet in order to join their ranks. While Ro had initially been considered for DS9 , when Forbes declined the offer, she made way for the creation of Kira.

Professor Keiko O’Brien (Rosalind Chao)

star trek hottest female characters

She turned a meat eater into a plant lover, and that is only the beginning of her list of achievements. Born in Japan, Keiko is a galaxy-class civilian botanist onboard the Enterprise-D and an elementary school teacher on Deep Space 9. In addition, a Pah-Wraith only possessed her once—in your face, Dukat.

Zora (Sash Striga & Annabelle Wallis)

star trek hottest female characters

Zora is the first of her kind, a fully sentient Starfleet vessel. When a Starfleet doctor tells the crew of the Discovery to evaluate Zora to see if her fully integrated sentient programming is against Starfleet regulation, the AI eloquently argues for her right to exist, saying, “I am attached to [my form] as you are to yours.”

Watch Season 4, Episode 7, “…But to Connect,” to see more Zora (and trans allegory at its finest).

Ensign Kearns (Kari Wahlgren)

star trek hottest female characters

An ensign aboard the Cali-class USS Carlsbad , Kearns is so skilled at her duties, she even impresses Ensign Mariner. While Beta Shift initially assumes that she thinks she’s too good for them, they later discover she is actually intimidated by the impressive reputation earned by the Cerritos.

35 Actresses You Forgot Appeared In ‘Star Trek’

Uproxx authors

For the past 50 years, the  Star Trek  franchise has captured audiences imaginations on both the big and small screen, with six TV series and a dozen feature films, as well as some upcoming  projects in the pipeline . During that half-century, Star Trek has managed to accrue quite the ensemble of guest stars, playing everyone from alien races from far-off worlds to people from Earth’s past and present. We’ve previously looked at some of the great actors who have popped up , so here’s a rundown of 35 actresses that are forever part of Star Trek history.

Michelle Forbes

Having had recurring roles in several TV staples like  True Blood  and  Homicide: Life on the Street , Forbes is also known for playing Ensign Ro Loren in Star Trek: The Next Generation , a part she got after impressing producers with a one-off performance as the character Dara earlier in the show’s run.

Ashley Judd

The now-famous Judd got her start in front of the camera as Ensign Robin Lefler in two episodes of  Star Trek: The Next Generation’s fifth season. While she’s since made it to Hollywood’s A-List as an actress, she comes from a famous family, with both her mother and step-sister singing vocals in the country supergroup The Judds.

Julie Warner

Warner had acted in a handful of TV roles prior to Star Trek: The Next Generation , where she played Cristy Henshaw, a civilian resident of the Enterprise D and an on-again, off-again girlfriend to Lt. Geordi La Forge (Lavar Burton).

Olivia d’Abo

The cool older sister from The Wonder Years,  Olivia D’Abo, did a one-episode spot as Amanda Rogers in Star Trek: The Next Generation, who started aboard the Enterprise-D as the intern to Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), before it was revealed that she was a descendant of Q. Which meant she had to come to terms with that whole super-powerful, four-dimensional being thing.

Famke Janssen

The original Jean Grey from the   X-Men  film franchise had her first small-screen role as Kamala, a Kriosian who falls in love with Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) during an episode of  Star Trek: The Next Generation .

A minor TV star throughout the ’90s and early-2000s, Cox was barely recognizable behind all the prosthetics as Sarjenka, a Dreman girl in communication with the android Data (Brent Spiner), who urges Picard’s help in saving her world. Data even manages to show some affection toward her after she’s returned home having had her memory of the Enterprise erased, because sometimes the Prime Directive is harsh.

Kirsten Dunst

Having just finished starring as Peggy Blumquist on the second season of  Fargo  on FX , Dunst has literally grown up on the silver screen. Which meant she had a pretty impressive acting resume by the time she guest starred as the telepathic Cairn Hedril in the seventh season of Star Trek: The Next Generation .

Brenda Strong

The character of Rashella, played by Brenda Strong, was an Aldean who aimed to repopulate her near-sterile planet using the Enterprise-D’s resident children in an early episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation . Strong has since returned to the sci-fi genre these days, guest starring in The CW’s brilliant original series The 100 .

Pamela Adlon

Before she was the cranky, apprehensive girlfriend on FX’s Louis , Pamela Adlon, (then Pamela Segall), she played Oji in a single episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation . A member of the less-advanced Mintakin tribe, she’s left in awe of how the technology aboard the Enterprise-D was able to heal her father, Liko, leaving Picard to re-explain to her the concept of mortality.

Bebe Neuwirth

Neuwirth, best known as Frasier’s ex on Cheers , played Nurse Lanel in the fourth season of The Next Generation . Stationed aboard the Malconian medical facility, she helps First Officer William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) escape, but only on the condition that he helps her cross ‘sex with an alien’ off her bucket list.

Teri Hatcher

Early on in her career, with only a couple roles under her belt, this  Desperate Housewives star had to settle for an uncredited part as a transporter chief in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s second season.

Whoopi Goldberg

Yes, you remember Whoopi Goldberg’s Guinan, the El-Aurian bartender of Ten-Forward, the Enterprise-D’s lounge from Star Trek: The Next Generation , but maybe some people don’t. While she was part of the race known as The Listeners, making her the ideal barkeep, she was also known to dole out sagely advice to Starfleet personnel now and then.

Kim Catrall

Vulcan Starfleet officer Valeris was, at first, written in as Saavik, the character first played by Kirstie Alley in 1981’s  Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan  — a role Catrall herself auditioned for. She agreed to appear in Trek’s sixth installment, The Undiscovered Country , but only after learning that she’d be playing an entirely new character all her own.

The actress/supermodel played Martia in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , a double-crossing shape-shifter who, over the course of the film, would also take the form of a massive alien, a young girl, and eventually Captain Kirk himself, the last one giving us one of the most self-aware  Star Trek  jokes of all time.

Yvonne Craig

In the mid 1960s, Yvonne Craig went from playing Batgirl on TV’s Batman to playing Marta, a member of the Orion race and one of  Star Trek’s quintessential green seductresses. However, despite her very best efforts, she fails to both seduce and stab Captain Kirk.

Jane Wiedlin

Wiedlin was already famous as the singer/guitarist in the definitive ’80s band The Go-Gos, but she had an extremely brief cameo in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home as Trillya, a Communications Officer sending out a desperate distress call out to Starfleet. Thankfully, she got a bit more screen time as Joan of Arc in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure .

Catherine Hicks

Dr. Gillian Taylor, a 20th century in-house whale expert in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, was played by soap opera mainstay Catherine Hicks, who’d go on to play family matriarch Annie Camden for 11 seasons on  7th Heaven .

Kirstie Alley

In her big-screen debut, Alley played Saavik, the Vulcan Starfleet officer in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . She’d turn down the chance to reprise her role in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock over a financial dispute, which meant the role was recast with actress Robin Curtis. She’d go back and forth between roles on the big and small screen, and would eventually make TV history by replacing Shelly Long on the long-running Cheers .

The Oscar-winning actress and comedy icon had a role as secretary Roberta Lincoln in Star Trek ‘s Cold War episode “Assignment Earth.” And, like many in the 20th century the Enterprise crew seems to encounter, she ended up playing a fateful role in the future of humankind.

Julie Newmar

One of the three actresses to play Catwoman opposite Adam West in Batman,  Newmar had a role on Star Trek as Eleen, a pregnant Capellan who was forced to flee her home after a coup against her husband left him dead. She ended up returning to the role of Catwoman by voicing the role in Rocksteady Video Games’ Arkham Knight last year.

Sally Kellerman

After CBS elected to re-film the  Star Trek  pilot, they made a few changes. One, they cast William Shatner as James T. Kirk, another was their hiring Sally Kellerman to play Elizabeth Dehner, a Starfleet officer who develops uncanny abilities after encountering the psionic barrier.

Joan Collins

While she’s most readily associated with 80’s TV staple Dynasty , she stars in one of Star Trek’s most beloved episodes, “City On The Edge of Tomorrow,” playing the big-hearted Edith Keeler. When Kirk and Spock go back in time to rescue Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Kirk ends up falling in love with her, despite knowing the pivotal role she plays in the future of mankind (of course!).

Dina Meyer played the Romulan Commander Donatra in Star Trek: Nemesis  back in 2002, the same year she was cast as Barbara Gordon in the series Birds of Prey , a Batman adaptation sans-Batman. She’s probably best remembered, though, as the ill-fated Dizzy Flores in the 1997’s Starship Troopers .

Heather Langenkamp

You wouldn’t know it from looking at her, but that’s Nightmare on Elm Street’s Heather Langenkamp underneath all those prosthetics playing Moto, a Starfleet Security Officer in Star Trek: Into Darkness . The actress was initially working on the film as a make-up artist before she landed the role.

Lark Voorhies

Voorhies, known for an entire generation as Lisa Turtle from Saved By The Bell , was also part of the Star Trek universe as Leanne, a civilian resident of the Deep Space 9 station who was romantically involved with Jake Sisto (Cirroc Lofton) for a spell.

Gabrielle Union

Former teen heartthrob Gabrielle Union stuck fairly close to typecasting for her one-episode role in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as N’Garen, a young Klingon weapons officer.

Sarah Silverman

This comedy superstar played 20th century scientist Rain Robinson on Star Trek: Voyager in the mid-1990s during the two-part episode “Future’s End,” which like all female scientists from the 20th century, ended up falling for a Starfleet office. Silverman has managed to stay in the spotlight throughout the bulk of her career, balancing her standup with guest starring roles in shows like Masters of Sex , as well as lighthearted material, like her frequent voice work on Bob’s Burgers .

Virginia Madsen

While she was immensely popular in the mid-80s, actress Virginia Madsen has continued to work consistently, proving her ability to blend herself into any part. Such was the case with her role in Star Trek: Voyager as Kellin, a Ramuran tracer who, because of the traits of her species, ends up having a rather complicated love affair with one of the crew members.

Sharon Lawrence

During her run as Sylvia Costas on NYPD Blue , Lawrence starred as Amelia Earhart, the female pilot and 20th century icon who was written in as a character on  Star Trek: Voyager.  The show goes so far as to solve her mysterious disappearance, which was the work of the alien species the Briori.

Rachael Harris

Another well-known staple in the world of comedy, Harris played Martis, an Ocampan who gives birth to her daughter, Kes, who would later become a crew member of The USS Intrepid on   Star Trek: Voyager .

The Orange is the New Black actress, perhaps best remembered from  A League of Their Own, pops up in a Star Trek: Voyager  episode as Noss, a mysterious stranger who lives on an uncharted planet, teaching Tom Paris and Tuvok how to survive on the desolate world she calls home.

Joanna Cassidy

Cassidy has been acting since the late-1960s, and eventually added Star Trek to her resume as the Vulcan T’Les, an instructor at the Vulcan Science Academy in Star Trek: Enterprise back in 2004 .

Wynona Ryder

For the J.J. Abrams ‘  Star Trek reboot, Winona Rider played the part of Amanda Grayson, the human mother of Spock (played by both Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy), who was killed while trying to evacuated her adopted home planet.

Jennifer Morrison

Yes, Emma Swan from NBC’s Once Upon A Time played Winona, the mother of Captain Kirk (now played by Chris Pine), in Star Trek and the sequel Star Trek: Into Darkness .

Alfre Woodard

A survivor of the third world war, Alfre Woodard played Lily Sloane, a human who helps Zefram Cochrane (James Cromwell) build the first ever warp drive, drawing intergalactic attention to planet Earth in Star Trek: First Contact . Of course, the Enterprise-D is drawn in to help stave off some unwanted attention from the time-traveling Borg.

Let's look at Star Trek 's best new female movie characters.

18 Awesome Women In Star Trek

Caithlin dar (cynthia gouw), star trek v: the final frontier.

Caithlin Dar appeared as the Romulan representative on Nimbus III in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and was one of three diplomats captured by the radical Vulcan Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) and subjected to his mental influence during his quest to find Sha Ka Ree. Aligning with Sybok's Galactic Army of Light, Caithlin Dar and the Human and Klingon diplomats quickly work to entrap and disarm the USS Enterprise-A shuttle crew officers, sending out a staged hostage transmission and ultimately taking over the ship. An important figure by profession and placement, Caithlin Dar personifies the progressive importance and contrasting risks of cooperation, commitment, and trust.

Anij (Donna Murphy)

Star trek: insurrection.

In Star Trek: Insurrection , Anij (Donna Murphy) stars as a peaceful Ba'ku settler over 300 years old. With the metaphasic particles from the planet's rings providing renewing properties, the Ba'ku are extraordinarily long-lived and have developed a degree of mental influence. As a Son'a/Starfleet conspiracy begins to take root against the Ba'ku, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Anij develop a romantic relationship and set out to defend the Ba'ku against the despicable scheme. Notable for her enhanced youth, mental abilities, and loyalty to her people, Anij's commitment emphasizes the significance of her long life and considered peaceful ideals .

Lieutenant Ilia (Persis Khambatta)

Star trek: the motion picture.

In Star Trek 's 1979 movie premiere, Star Trek: The Motion Picture , Lieutenant Ilia (Persis Khambatta) is assigned to the USS Enterprise as navigator when Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command to investigate the V'Ger entity. A Deltan, Ilia had pain-relieving abilities during tactile contact with others and comforted Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) following a wrist injury. Ilia is killed on the Enterprise's Bridge by V'Ger's probe during the mission and soon replicated almost exactly as a second probe by V'Ger, sent to the Enterprise to collect information on the " carbon unit " crew. Kirk later listed Lieutenant Ilia, alongside her lover, Commander Will Decker (Stephen Collins), missing in action.

Carol Marus (Alice Eve)

Star trek into darkness.

Dr. Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) , daughter of Admiral Alexander Marcus (Peter Weller), joined the Kelvin timeline's USS Enterprise crew in Star Trek Into Darkness . Faking an assignment to the Enterprise, Carol conceals her identity and joins the crew as Dr. Carol Wallace. Boasting a doctorate in applied physics, specializing in advanced weaponry, Carol is significantly willing to investigate the shady irregularities despite the proximity of her familial relationship, ultimately risking her life and standing against her father in an attempt to save the Enterprise crew . Confident, capable, and quietly intellectual, Carol Marcus displays an idealistic, hopeful belief in the good intentions of others coupled with a wary, experienced distrust.

Star Trek Into Darkness' Alice Eve Controversy Explained

Kalara (lydia wilson), star trek beyond.

In Star Trek Beyond , Kalara (Lydia Wilson) lures the Enterprise crew to Altamid on a rescue mission. Formerly a Starfleet officer, the human Jessica Wolff was assigned to the USS Franklin under the command of Captain Balthazar Edison (Idris Elba) . Wolff transforms into Kalara, an alien form, using energy transfer technology found on the planet. Part of a Starfleet ship crew-turned-bad, Kalara mirrors the movie's protagonists and subverts the expectation of Starfleet as a force for good . Though not singularly responsible for the loss and devastation created through the original Franklin crew's actions, Kalara is nonetheless an agent of evil and bears significant responsibility for the colossal loss.

Lieutenant Valeris (Kim Cattrall)

Star trek vi: the undiscovered country.

The Starship Enterprise is charged with escorting the Klingon Chancellor Gorkon (David Warner) to important peace talks on Earth in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , following a devastating incident on the Klingon moon Praxis several months before. Learning of the mission, Lieutenant Valeris (Kim Cattrall) requests an assignment on the Enterprise and takes the helm. Mentored by Captain Spock (Leonard Nimoy) at Starfleet Academy and the first Vulcan to graduate at the top of her class, Valeris is due to succeed Spock in his role on the Enterprise at the end of the mission. However, Valeris has another agenda and participates in a conspiracy to sabotage the Klingon-Federation peace talks through assassination and political framing .

Donatra (Dina Meyer)

Star trek: nemesis.

In Star Trek: Nemesis , Donatra (Dina Meyer), commander of the Romulan warbird Valdorem conspired to advance Shinzon (Tom Hardy) to Praetor of the Romulan Star Empire, Donatra's loyalty began to waiver when she learned of his plan to commit genocide on Earth through the use of thalaron radiation. Later, Donatra fought against Shinzon's starship, the Scimitar, aiding Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-E, sending medical shuttles and aid to the Enterprise after the battle. Later, informing Picard that a friendship had formed between them, Donatra solidifies the character's importance in multiple regards. Indicative of Romulan culture and behaviors, Donatra's red lines forged great significance, established alliances, and saved lives .

Dr. Gillian Taylor (Catherine Hicks)

Star trek iv: the voyage home.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (the one with the whales) introduced Dr. Gillian Taylor (Catherine Hicks) as the kindly cetacean biologist caring for two humpback whales , George and Gracie. Showing a commitment to her charges, Dr Taylor becomes frustrated by the unusually evasive Admiral James T. Kirk and Captain Spock. Though disbelieving of their claims, she nonetheless seeks their assistance when the whales are released ahead of schedule. Later insisting on returning to the future with the stolen Klingon-ship crew and the two whales, Dr Taylor proves her resolute commitment to the whales' welfare, and boldly goes into the future facing a brand new life.

Star Trek & Whales: Earths Mammals Have Been Important To Starfleet For 37 Years

Lieutenant saavik (robin curtis), star trek iii: the search for spock, star trek iv: the voyage home.

Lieutenant Saavik (Robin Curtis) , initially played by Kirstie Alley in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , picks up the adventure in Star Trek III: The Search For Spock . Having transferred to the USS Grissom following events in the previous movie, Saavik works with David Marcus (Merrick Butrick) to study the Genesis Planet, where they find the rejuvenated but young and rapidly aging Spock. With rapid aging comes the sudden onset of Pon Farr, the Vulcan time of mating, and Saavik has little option but to help Spock through this violent ordeal . Later reunited with the Enterprise crew, Saavik assists with returning Spock to Vulcan to reunite his body and Katra.

Lieutenant Saavik (Kirstie Alley)

Star trek ii: the wrath of khan.

One of two new female characters introduced in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (with Bibi Besch as Dr. Carol Marcus), Lieutenant Saavik (Kirstie Alley) stars as a Vulcan mentored by Spock (Leonard Nimoy). Failing the infamous Kobayashi Maru command simulation near the movie's beginning, Saavik embarks on a learning quest parallel to the Enterprise's mission. Assigned to the Enterprise as a navigator, Saavik's curiosity and inquisitiveness simultaneously demonstrate her Vulcan intellect and professional inexperience . With this movie the first of a multiple-part story, Alley sets up Saavik's story arc with an approachable, emotionally invested character that serves as a comparison for an established, tested crew.

Dr. Carol Marcus (Bibi Besch)

Dr. Carol Marcus (Bibi Besch) starred in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , appearing as the noted Chief Scientist who created the Starfleet-funded life-forming Genesis Project . Alongside her scientific work, Carol Marcus was previously romantically involved with William Shatner's Admiral Kirk (at the time a junior officer in Starfleet) and mother to their son, David Marcus (Merrick Butrick). Stationed on Regula I with the now-grown David and their team, ready to test their creation, Carol Marcus is drawn into the conflict between Kirk and the vengeance-driven augment, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban). Though the interruption derails the project, Carol Marcus uses the situation to unite David with his father.

Lily Sloane (Alfre Woodard)

Star trek: first contact.

Lily Sloane (Alfre Woodard) starred in Star Trek: First Contact as a 21st-century human working to develop Earth's first warp-capable spacecraft, the Phoenix . A strong and formidable character, Lily was a highly determined survivor of Earth's World War III, somewhat jaded by her experiences. No stranger to the struggles of life's hardships or the dark potential of others, Lily rises to meet a series of trying situations and possible foes, even verbally taking on Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart). Working mainly with Picard to overcome the Borg threat and restore the timeline, Lily's bold actions, courage, and grounded morality are a weighty measure that establishes her remarkable character and sets the movie's tone .

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

Picard season 3 canceled a star trek: voyager naomi wildman comeback, playing 3 kirks in star trek: strange new worlds let paul wesley "learn from mistakes".

  • Some of the best characters in Star Trek are recurring characters, which add depth and variety to shows.
  • Characters like Nurse Chapel, Q, Garak, and Naomi Wildman bring unique perspectives and enhance the storytelling.
  • Recurring characters like Data, Emperor Georgiou, and Chakotay continue to have a lasting impact on the franchise.

Every Star Trek series has great guest stars, but some recurring characters stand above the rest. Although Star Trek TV shows have always relied heavily on a series' main cast to tell their stories, no show would be complete without other characters to round out various episodes. Often, an episode's guest characters only appear once in the series, but the best kinds of Star Trek recurring characters are the ones who stick around and appear in multiple episodes despite not being a series regular.

These recurring characters sometimes become more popular than the main characters and can add a lot to the show by being fresh faces that audiences are excited to see. Sometimes, previous main characters from older series have even become recurring characters on later shows , adding an exciting element as a callback to viewers' favorite series. Whether it's a classic Star Trek: TOS cast addition like Christine Chapel (Majel Barret) or a beloved former main character like Data (Brent Spiner), Star Trek 's recurring characters hold a special place in franchise canon.

Star Trek is ending series like Discovery and Lower Decks but renewed Strange New Worlds while setting up new streaming and theatrical movies.

10 Nurse Christine Chapel

Star trek: the original series.

Star Trek: The Original Series is famous for having a singular focus on the show's core characters, namely Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy). However, the show certainly had recurring characters, and there is perhaps none more famous than Nurse Christine Chapel. Played by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's wife, Majel Barret, Nurse Chapel made the biggest impression on TOS outside of the show's main cast. As one of the few female characters in the series, Chapel added a more well-rounded element to the show in her work with Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) in Sickbay.

More recently, Jess Bush has taken on the role of Chapel in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , fleshing out the character's backstory and adding new layers to her life and relationship with Spock that change and improve how she can be viewed in TOS upon rewatch.

Barret played Chapel with grace and charm, and the role cemented her as an icon of the early Trek era. Chapel's unrequited romance with Spock added a much-needed stable romantic element to TOS , contrasting with Kirk's briefer flings. More recently, Jess Bush has taken on the role of Chapel in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , fleshing out the character's backstory and adding new layers to her life and relationship with Spock that change and improve how she can be viewed in TOS upon rewatch.

Star Trek: The Original Series follows the exploits of the crew of the USS Enterprise. On a five-year mission to explore uncharted space, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) must trust his crew - Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Forest DeKelley), Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan), Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), Chekov (Walter Koenig) and Sulu (George Takei) - with his life. Facing previously undiscovered life forms and civilizations and representing humanity among the stars on behalf of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets, the Enterprise regularly comes up against impossible odds and diplomatic dilemmas.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Few recurring characters in Star Trek: The Next Generation have gone on to become as iconic as Q (John de Lancie) . Introduced in TNG 's pilot episode, "Encounter at Farpoint," Q became a staple villain (and sometimes ally) throughout TNG 's seven seasons. In fact, it's hard to believe that Q only appeared in eight episodes of TNG , given how strongly he is associated with the series and how much of an impact his storylines had on the larger Star Trek canon.

De Lancie's brash and hilarious portrayal of Q was a large part of what made him so popular, but Q's powers and his ability to involve the Star Trek: TNG cast in a wide variety of ridiculous situations created some of the show's best episodes. Outside of TNG , Q has gone on to occupy a special place in the franchise, making appearances in Star Trek: Voyager and most recently in Star Trek: Picard . The fact that Q is still an active part of Star Trek nearly 40 years after his introduction illustrates perfectly why he's TNG 's best recurring character.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third installment in the sci-fi franchise and follows the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew members of the USS Enterprise. Set around one hundred years after the original series, Picard and his crew travel through the galaxy in largely self-contained episodes exploring the crew dynamics and their own political discourse. The series also had several overarching plots that would develop over the course of the isolated episodes, with four films released in tandem with the series to further some of these story elements.

8 Elim Garak

Star trek: deep space nine.

Although he started on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in a minimal role, Garak (Andrew Robinson) became an important part of later seasons. As the first Cardassian character to occupy a more sympathetic role, Garak provided an interesting counterpart to DS9 's Cardassian villain Gul Dukat (Mark Alaimo) , acting as a more morally ambiguous figure in his role as the space station's resident tailor and former Cardassian spy. It's interesting that Garak was so popular despite his gray morality, but he fit right in with DS9 's complexly characterized cast.

In addition, Garak's fascinating relationship with Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) helped elevate his character to a much higher status than other recurring characters. The chemistry between Robinson and Siddig was apparent from the first scene they acted opposite in , and DS9 seemed to realize that both characters were better when they played against each other. Garak was also an integral part of some of the show's most iconic episodes, like season 6's "In the Pale Moonlight." DS9 would have been a completely different show without Garak's presence.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, also known as DS9, is the fourth series in the long-running Sci-Fi franchise, Star Trek. DS9 was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller, and stars Avery Brooks, René Auberjonois, Terry Farrell, and Cirroc Lofton. This particular series follows a group of individuals in a space station near a planet called Bajor.

7 Naomi Wildman

Star trek: voyager.

Star Trek: Voyager didn't include a lot of recurring characters, so Naomi Wildman (Scarlett Pomers) was certainly the best of the bunch. As the first child born on the USS Voyager and the only one to grow up during the ship's journey through the Delta Quadrant, Naomi provided something that most Star Trek shows didn't have: a young character who could provide perspective on what life was like for a kid on a starship . Some of the most interesting episodes of Voyager 's later seasons were episodes from Naomi's point of view.

Naomi also brought out the best in multiple main characters, most notably Neelix (Ethan Phillips) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) . For Neelix, acting as Naomi's godfather showed the more human side of a character that tended to be over-the-top. For Seven, Naomi provided a fascinating youthful parallel as the former Borg drone rediscovered her humanity, and opportunities for Seven to show her softer side as well. Voyager would have lost a wonderful perspective without Naomi, and despite being young, Scarlett Pomers played her perfectly.

The fifth entry in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Voyager, is a sci-fi series that sees the crew of the USS Voyager on a long journey back to their home after finding themselves stranded at the far ends of the Milky Way Galaxy. Led by Captain Kathryn Janeway, the series follows the crew as they embark through truly uncharted areas of space, with new species, friends, foes, and mysteries to solve as they wrestle with the politics of a crew in a situation they've never faced before.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 almost featured a reunion between Star Trek: Voyager's Seven of Nine and Naomi Wildman.

6 Admiral Maxwell Forrest

Star trek: enterprise.

Like Voyager , Star Trek: Enterprise focused mainly on its core cast and didn't boast a great complement of recurring characters, making Admiral Forrest (Vaughn Armstrong) the easy choice. Forrest provided a grounding element to the Enterprise episodes he appeared in, giving the show a connection to Earth that was needed as the characters embarked on the very first missions of the nascent Starfleet. Likewise, Forrest's death in Enterprise season 4 made for a shocking twist for the show's last season without killing off a main character .

Enterprise season 4 did end up killing a main character with Trip Tucker's (Connor Trinneer) death in the show's series finale "These Are the Voyages..."

More important than Forrest's character, however, was the man who played him. As a veteran of the Star Trek franchise with a dozen characters across various series under his belt, Vaughn Armstrong getting the opportunity to play a recurring role on Enterprise was well deserved. Armstrong himself was particularly proud of Forrest, even going so far as to say that the character was his best contribution to the franchise . This is high praise for someone who has played such a variety of Star Trek characters and already cemented their place as a franchise legend.

Star Trek: Enterprise acts as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, detailing the voyages of the original crew of the Starship Enterprise in the 22nd century, a hundred years before Captain Kirk commanded the ship. Enterprise was the sixth series in the Star Trek franchise overall, and the final series before a twelve-year hiatus until the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017. The series stars Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer, with an ensemble cast that includes John Billingsley, Jolene Blalock, Dominic Keating, Anthony Montgomery, Linda Park, and Connor Trinneer.

5 Emperor Philippa Georgiou

Star trek: discovery.

Although Star Trek: Discovery has had many recurring characters over its five seasons, Emperor Georgiou (Michell Yeoh) stands above the rest. Discovery first introduced Georgiou as her Prime Universe counterpart, who was unfortunately killed in the show's second episode. However, Discovery luckily realized that wasting Yeoh's talent on only a brief cameo was ill-advised , and managed to find a way to bring back the character with a twist.

Through her, Discovery greatly expanded the lore of the Mirror Universe, and her complicated journey from ruthless Terran Emperor to reformed villain was well-paced and completely believable, even given where she started.

Since her debut in season 1, Emperor Georgiou has become one of the more important characters in the Star Trek universe. Through her, Discovery greatly expanded the lore of the Mirror Universe, and her complicated journey from ruthless Terran Emperor to reformed villain was well-paced and completely believable , even given where she started. Georgiou became so popular during her time on Discovery that the franchise is giving her her own movie. Star Trek: Section 31 will explore Star Trek 's "lost era" and other previously under-represented parts of the franchise.

Star Trek: Discovery is an entry in the legendary Sci-Fi franchise, set ten years before the original Star Trek series events. The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

Star Trek: Picard

Few characters made a bigger impact on Star Trek: Picard than Data (Brent Spiner), despite the show only having three seasons. As a previous main character from Star Trek: TNG , season 1 of Picard 's choice to explore the fallout of Data's death in Star Trek: Nemesis was an extremely smart choice. Although not technically physically present for most of season 1, Data was integral to the heart of the season's narrative and provided the emotional crux for much of the plot .

Additionally, after supposedly dying permanently in season 1, Picard season 3 not only found a way to bring Data back to life but also gave him what he had always wanted: to be human. Thanks to a new more human body and the integration of several personalities, Data finally gained the full range of emotion and was able to reunite with his friends from the Enterprise-D. Data's return to life in Picard season 3 was incredibly emotional for long-time viewers , and one of the more impactful storylines in the show's final season.

After starring in Star Trek: The Next Generation for seven seasons and various other Star Trek projects, Patrick Stewart is back as Jean-Luc Picard. Star Trek: Picard focuses on a retired Picard who is living on his family vineyard as he struggles to cope with the death of Data and the destruction of Romulus. But before too long, Picard is pulled back into the action. The series also brings back fan-favorite characters from the Star Trek franchise, such as Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Worf (Michael Dorn), and William Riker (Jonathan Frakes).

3 Lieutenant James T. Kirk

Star trek: strange new worlds.

No character is more emblematic of the Star Trek franchise than James T. Kirk , which is why Paul Wesley's version of the character is undoubtedly the best recurring member of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' cast . Although Strange New Worlds is about Captain Pike's (Anson Mount) time as Captain of the USS Enterprise, the show has already greatly expanded the backstories of several TOS characters, including Spock (Ethan Peck) and Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding). Given this focus, it would have felt wrong not to include Kirk somewhere in the mix.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has provided the earliest depiction of Kirk in the franchise to date, showing his time in Starfleet before he became a Captain.

Although he has only appeared in a handful of episodes throughout the show's two seasons, Wesley has brought wonderful new life to his version of such an iconic character, putting his own spin on Kirk while still feeling true to his origins . Likewise, Strange New Worlds has provided some incredible franchise firsts, such as depicting Kirk and Spock's first meeting. The show has managed to use Kirk perfectly while also staying focused on its main cast, and the possibilities for seeing him in future seasons are endless in terms of what new storylines Strange New Worlds can explore.

A spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a television series that takes place before the events of the original series and follows Captain Christopher Pike as he mans the helm of the U.S.S. Enterprise. The show focuses on this previous crew of the Enterprise as they explore the galaxy with returning characters from Discovery.

Paul Wesley's performance as James T. Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 improved after his season 1 debut as an alternate reality Kirk.

2 Dr. Migleemo

Star trek: lower decks.

Star Trek: Lower Decks ' humor is primarily what sets it apart from other shows in the franchise. Lower Decks ' firm grounding in comedy means that any recurring characters must stand out as truly funny, to match the energy of the main characters . While most of Lower Decks ' recurring characters, like Billups (Paul Scheer) and Kayshon (Carl Tart), have their moments, none of them are quite as consistently amusing as Dr. Migleemo (Paul F. Tompkins).

Migleemo adds a wonderfully bumbling element to Lower Decks while turning the role of ship's counselor originated by Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) on its head. Migleemo has acted as a great foil for the show's main characters, particularly Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), and consistently helps elevate storylines with his often ridiculous appearances. While characters like Billups may have been given more screen time, Migleemo embodies the spirit of Lower Decks better and is consistently more interestingly characterized.

"Star Trek: Lower Decks" focuses on the support crew serving on one of Starfleet's least important ships, the USS Cerritos, in 2380. Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford and Tendi must keep up with their duties and their social lives, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies. The ship's bridge crew includes Captain Carol Freeman, Commander Jack Ransom, Lieutenant Shaxs and Doctor T'Ana. This is the second animated spin-off in the franchise after 1973-74's "Star Trek: The Animated Series," but has a decidedly more adult tone and humor.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Given that its only season was heavily focused on the main cast, Star Trek: Prodigy has basically no recurring characters. This leaves no doubt that Chakotay (Robert Beltran) is the best and hopefully set to have a bigger role in season 2. Like Data, Chakotay was a previous main character on Star Trek: Voyager , which means his inclusion on Prodigy only makes sense given the show's strong connection to Voyager in the form of Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) .

The main appeal of Chakotay in Prodigy is his potential; the show has the opportunity to improve Chakotay's character exponentially, providing him with a better depiction and ideally expanding the exploration of his complicated history with Janeway.

Prodigy season 1 already revealed what happened to Chakotay after Voyager ended, but season 2 is rife with possibilities for his character given that his rescue will be the main focus. The main appeal of Chakotay in Prodigy is his potential; the show has the opportunity to improve Chakotay's character exponentially , providing him with a better depiction and ideally expanding the exploration of his complicated history with Janeway. Given that Chakotay was often underused or mishandled on Voyager , his future in the Star Trek franchise thanks to Prodigy looks much brighter now than ever.

Star Trek: Prodigy is the first TV series in the Star Trek franchise marketed toward children, and one of the few animated series in the franchise. The story follows a group of young aliens who find a stolen Starfleet ship and use it to escape from the Tars Lamora prison colony where they are all held captive. Working together with the help of a holographic Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), the new crew of the USS Protostar must find their way back to the Alpha Quadrant to warn the Federation of the deadly threat that is pursuing them.

Every Star Trek series besides Star Trek: Prodigy is available to stream on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Prodigy is available to stream on Netflix.

Star Trek is one of pop culture's biggest multimedia franchises, spanning multiple movies, TV shows, books, comics, video games, and various other media. The franchise was created by Gene Roddenberry and started with the 1960s TV series starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. Over the decades, several equally popular series have come out since as Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Discovery.

Star Trek

Star Trek Characters Who Look Completely Different In Real Life

Worf and Airiam looking serious

When the crew of the starship Enterprise first embarked on their twenty-year mission, the goal was to "seek out new life and new civilizations." As it turns out, most of the planets in most of the galaxies across the universe are inhabited by beings that look remarkably similar to Earth's humans. Apparently evolution ends up happening in almost the exact same way on any planet that can support life.

But in all seriousness, the fact that the different alien races in the "Star Trek" universe either look indistinguishable from humans — or like a human but with an unusual skin color or some slightly exaggerated facial feature — likely originally stemmed from it being a network TV show from the 1960s and not having the makeup or VFX budget for much else, which for a time was one of the  worst things about the franchise .

Luckily, as time has gone on, new alien races have been introduced, with some actually getting much further from humans visually. Some even require the use of extensive prosthetics or special effects, making the characters look very different than the actors portraying them. Here are some of the more extreme examples of that, mostly sticking to either fairly significant characters or more well-known actors.

Marc Alaimo as Dukat

Often making lists of not only the best "Star Trek" villains but also of fan-favorite "Star Trek" characters in general, Gul Dukat is the franchise's most prominent member of the Cardassian race. Though the Cardassians made their debut on an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Dukat was a recurring character on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" where he took turns being both friend and foe to Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks).

Dukat was portrayed by actor Marc Alaimo, who not only looks different in real life but helped to originate the Caradassians as a whole. This is because Alaimo had also played another Caradassian, Macet, in the species' first appearance on "The Next Generation." Additionally, he played four other non-Cardassian characters across the run of "The Next Generation." Among his more noteworthy roles in which he doesn't appear under intricate prosthetics that completely transform his face are Mars Security Force Captain Everett in the original "Total Recall," and eight episodes as Gene Scapizzi on the 1980s police procedural "Hill Street Blues."

Alaimo told a crowd at a 2015 convention that, while he wasn't officially retired from acting, he was no longer actively seeking roles (though the official "Star Trek" X account tweeted that he was retired back in 2013). His most recent screen credit is a 2010 episode of "Family Guy."

Doug Jones as Saru

When prequel series "Star Trek: Discovery" debuted on streaming service CBS All Access — which would eventually evolve into Paramount+ — in 2017, it served as the launching point for one of the most active periods in "Star Trek" history. Since then, there have been two more live-action series as well as two animated ones, plus a slew of new characters that have been added to the "Star Trek" universe debuting in those shows.

Among those debuts is Saru, who also introduced the entire Kelpien race to the "Star Trek" franchise. A first officer of the titular starship who also serves as captain for a time, Saru is played by Doug Jones — an actor who has built his entire career out of completely disappearing behind makeup and prosthetics. Even if you wouldn't recognize Jones if he passed you on the street out of costume, you're most certainly familiar with his work.

His breakout role was as wisecracking zombie Billy Butcherson in the Halloween classic "Hocus Pocus," a character he revisited for "Hocus Pocus 2." He later became a frequent collaborator of filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, playing Abe Sabien in "Hellboy" and "Hellboy II: The Golden Army," the Faun and terrifying Pale Man in "Pan's Labyrinth," and the unnamed amphibian man in "The Shape of Water." As for roles where he actually shows his face, Jones was Baron Afanas in 10 episodes of "What We Do in the Shadows" and played the Arrowverse's Jake Simmons aka Deathbolt.

Paul Winfield as Dathon

The Children of Tama — also known as the Tamarians — have thus far had the strongest screen presence on the animated series "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Beyond showing up in a couple of novels connected to "Star Trek: Voyager," Tamarians have almost no prior history in the "Trek" universe — with the notable exception of their original debut. Once again, that happened on an episode of "The Next Generation," in Season 5's "Darmok." That episode not only introduces the Tamarian race but also its most prominent live-action ambassador thus far — Captain Dathon.

"Darmok" is often considered one of the best "The Next Generations" episodes of all time, as well as one of Patrick Stewart's greatest performances as Jean-Luc Picard in the series. But respect must also be paid to actor Paul Winfield, whose portrayal of Dathon went a long way in making the episode — and the character — so memorable. Winfield, who was an Emmy winner and Academy Award nominee, had previously played Captain Terrell in the film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan."

Other career highlights include "The Terminator" and recurring roles on the series "227" and "Touched by an Angel," plus the "Picket Fences" guest appearance that earned him his Emmy. Winfield remained active in both film and television right up until his death in 2004.

Eric Bana as Nero

After the disappointing critical and commercial performance of "Star Trek: Nemesis," the "Star Trek" film series needed a break. With none of the subsequent TV series having enough cultural cache to justify building big-budget theatrical movies around them, the only choice was to go the big-budget soft reboot route — which is how we got to J.J. Abrams' 2009 release, simply titled "Star Trek." Providing a new origin story for the crew of the Enterprise, while conveniently having it set in an alternate timeline so the original canon could still be returned to if need be, "Star Trek '09," as its often called, successfully breathed new life into the flailing franchise.

Much of the plot of the "Star Trek" reboot revolves around a new character named Nero, a Romulan captain who travels back in time to destroy Vulcan in an act of revenge — inadvertently creating the two branching timelines in the process. Both actor Eric Bana and the movie's makeup team did such a convincing job of transforming Bana into Nero that even Bana's own agent failed to recognize the actor when he was on set in his full Nero makeup and costume.

Prior to becoming a Romulan, Bana had portrayed Bruce Banner in Ang Lee's "Hulk," Trojan prince Hector in the action epic "Troy," and lead character Avner Kaufman in Steven Spielberg's historical drama "Munich."

Armin Shimerman as Quark

When the Ferengis were conceptualized by "Star Trek" creator Gene Rodenberry and "The Next Generation" writer Herbert J. Wright, they were originally meant to be a dark and menacing villain presence. But that didn't pan out, and they very quickly became comic relief instead. Quark was the standout member of the Ferengi race, to the point that he became one of the main cast members on "Deep Space Nine" as the station's bartender for all seven seasons of the show.

In both his original "The Next Generation" appearances as well as on "Deep Space Nine," Quark was portrayed by actor Armin Shimerman. The geek-minded might better recognize Shimerman — sans the extensive prosthetics used to transform him into a Ferengi — as Principal Snyder on the "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer" TV series. Shimerman is also a prolific voice actor, playing General Skarr in "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy" and Dr. Nefarious across the entire "Ratchet & Clank" video game franchise. When he's not acting, Shimerman occasionally moonlights as a writer, even penning a Quark-focused "Deep Space Nine" novel called "The 34th Rule" with David R. George III. He's also open to returning as Quark, but on one condition : that it not be anything more than a recurring role, noting the difficulty of wearing the prosthetics that the role requires.

Pancho Demmings as Kradin soldier

Resembling the Predator alien species from the franchise of the same name, the Kradin are one of the scarier-looking species to ever make an appearance in any "Star Trek" media. Apart from a few quick glimpses elsewhere, they only played a significant role in the franchise in just a single episode of "Voyager" — the Season 4 episode titled "Nemesis." Even so, the Kradin left a lasting impression among "Trek" fans, not only for their gruesome appearance but for the episode itself being a favorite among fans of the series.

The performers that brought Kradin to life in that episode include Peter Vogt, Chuck Borden, and Louis Ortiz, though the most well-known actor among all the Kradin soldiers is likely Pancho Demmings. Demmings also played Gerald Jackson, assistant to Ducky Mallard (David McCallum), on 15 episodes of "NCIS." He's appeared on shows like "Bones," "CSI: NY," "24," and "Alias," and he most frequently plays police officers or members of the medical profession. Demmings also played a character named Alpha 7 in the "Babylon 5" TV movie "In the Beginning."

Hannah Cheesman as Airiam

While cyborgs are no strangers to the crews of various Federation starships — most notably, Voyager's former Borg drone, Seven of Nine — Airiam was still special in that regard. She rose all the way to the rank of lieutenant commander on the Discovery, though she was ultimately killed when she had to be ejected from the ship for fear that the entity that corrupted her would jeopardize the entire crew. Her sacrifice was at the center of one of the saddest "Star Trek" episodes ever , though some fans complained that it was too little too late for a character that never got the development she deserved.

In the first season of "Star Trek: Discovery," Airiam was played by Sara Mitich. In Season 2, Mitich switched to playing operations officer Nilsson, while actor Hannah Cheesman was brought in to take over as Airiam for the remainder of the series. It has never been officially revealed why the swap happened, with a popular (but as of yet unsubstantiated) rumor suggesting it had something to do with Mitich having an allergic reaction to the prosthetics. Either way, Cheesman held the role the longest and saw it through to not only Airiam's demise but one last appearance in the show's final season. Cheesman's biggest part outside of the "Star Trek" universe so far was a recurring role on the Nickelodeon series "Max & Shred."

Jeffrey Combs as Shran

Shran is an Andorian who was a recurring character on "Enterprise." He spent the first few seasons as one of the show's more prominent villains, eventually flipping sides and allying with the crew towards the end of the show's run. Though Shran himself hasn't appeared on screen since "Enterprise," he was referenced years later when a ship called the USS Shran was used during the Battle of the Binary Stars that occurred during Season 2 of "Discovery." A high honor, indeed.

It was actor Jeffrey Combs underneath Shran's blue skin, white hair, and heavily textured forehead. Before playing Shran, Combs had also portrayed the characters of Weyoun, Brunt, Officer Mulkahey, and Tiron across 32 episodes of "Deep Space Nine." Prior to "Enterprise," Combs also played Penk in an episode of "Voyager." And he wasn't done with "Trek" even after playing Shran, having most recently voiced AGIMUS in "Lower Decks."

With all that being said, Combs isn't even best known for his "Star Trek" work — that distinction likely belongs to his portrayal of scientist Herbert West in all three installments of the "Re-Animator" film series, as well as his work in many other cult classic horror films.

Ethan Philips as Neelix

Though he was introduced in the series premiere of "Voyager" and was a main cast member for all seven seasons of the show, Neelix has never been one of the better-liked "Star Trek" characters, particularly among those who have been series regulars. Of course, he has also occasionally found himself brought up in discussions about the most underrated "Star Trek" characters — so perhaps the most accurate way to refer to him is divisive. As for the character himself, his main job on the ship was its cook and also its morale officer, serving a similar role to previous "Trek" characters like Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) and Quark as food service workers and also de facto therapists for the crew of their respective ships.

Whether you love or hate Neelix, you can't fault the actor who portrayed him. Ethan Philips definitely made the best of a character that was perhaps intentionally designed to be unlikable — which he honed after having been a working actor for 15 years at that point. He was no stranger to television, playing recurring character Pete Downey on the classic sitcom "Benson." He also played Ferengi Dr. Farek in an episode of "The Next Generation" and another one-off Ferengi in "Enterprise." More recently, Philips has made multi-episode appearances on "Girls," "Better Call Saul," and "Veep."

Michael Dorn as Worf

OG "Star Trek" fans remember the Klingons as one of the deadliest antagonists groups in the franchise, with several of the "The Original Series" movies in particular featuring them as the primary antagonists. But at this point, Klingons as a whole have been allies to the Federation far longer than they've been adversaries — and Worf played a pivotal role in that initial changeover. Not only was he the first Klingon to be a main character in a "Star Trek" show, but he was such an integral part of the universe that he appeared in all seven seasons of "The Next Generation" and was a series regular for Seasons 4 through 7 of "Deep Space Nine," the highest number of total seasons (11) as a main character of any character in "Star Trek" history." And that's to say nothing of his recurring role in Season 3 of "Picard."

Actor Michael Dorn played Worf in varying degrees for 36 years. He clearly doesn't have issues with Worf being his legacy. But it's not the only character the seasoned actor has played. Dorn played Dr. Carver Burke across six episodes of "Castle," as well as portraying the magical being Sandman in two of the three "Santa Clause" movies plus the Disney+ series "The Santa Clauses." However, the bulk of Dorn's non-Worf roles over the past few decades have been voice performances, lending his distinctive baritone to a number of animated series and video games.

Heather Langenkamp as Moto

The second installment of the rebooted "Star Trek" movie series was "Star Trek Into Darkness," which loosely retells the story of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" with Benedict Cumberbatch as the iconic villain originally immortalized by Ricardo Montalbán. Also in that movie in a minor role is a being known as Moto, which has a much more exaggerated extraterrestrial look than a typical "Star Trek" character and really put the movie's makeup artists to the test. In fact, it was a member of the makeup team that is underneath Mojo's very elaborate prosthetics — but not just any member.

The makeup work of "Into Darkness" was done by AFX Studio, which is owned by David Leroy Anderson and his wife, Heather Langenkamp. Of course, before Langenkamp was working behind the camera, she was in front of it — most notably as Nancy Thompson in three of the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" films. Langenkamp said she had fond memories of watching Robert Englund sit in the makeup chair as he was transformed into Freddy Krueger, and always wanted the chance to experience that sort of transformation herself. So when a few alien extras were needed to fill out a scene in "Into Darkness," Langenkamp jumped at the chance, and she was put into an alien prosthetic that was created for a different project but never used.

Alice Krige as Borg Queen

Several actors have portrayed Borg queens over the years, include Alison Pill, Susanna Thompson, Jane Edwina Seymour, and the late Annie Wersching. And each brought their own unique spin to the character, undoubtedly one of the biggest bads in the entire "Star Trek" franchise. But if any one actor gets to claim herself as the "definitive" Borg queen, it's definitely Alice Krige. Not only was she the originator of the role in the character's first appearance in the film "Star Trek: First Contact," but she also portrayed her in episodes of "Voyager," "Lower Decks," and took over to voice her in her final "Picard" appearance after Wersching passed away — making her the actor who has played the Borg Queen the longest and in the most different projects. But what does the Borg Queen look like today , and what else has Krige been up to?

Krige is a veteran actor whose screen credits go back to the 1970s. Her first big role was portraying real-life singer and actor Sybil Gordon in the Oscar-winning 1981 film "Chariots of Fire." Today, she's more recognizable for her recent roles as Eir in "Thor: The Dark World," Holda the witch in "Gretel & Hansel," and Nancy in Netflix's "The OA." She also played Queen Helena in all three installments of the holiday-based rom-com series "A Christmas Prince."

However, her supernatural powers are not what makes her so special but the way her character went through a massive character development in the sequel trilogy was truly phenomenal. Her whole arc of letting go of what she wants to be, to what she is meant to be is very well done. Even though she is not related to the Skywalker bloodline, she took Luke, her master to be her father figure and took up the name of Rey Skywalker.

2. Padmé Amidala

Padmé Amidala (Best Female Characters in Star Wars)

Padme was the wife of Anakin Skywalker and the mother of Luke and Leia. This very factor tells us that without her, there would be no Star Wars at all. However, that is not all. Padme became the Queen of Naboo at the age of 14 and a member of the Republic Senate. She played an extremely important role in freeing her homeworld from Separatist clutches as witnessed in Phantom Menace.

Megan Thee Stallion

“Y’all, this is my first tour ever!” Megan Thee Stallion shouted with glee after picking up a floral bouquet thrown onto the stage by a fan. Surprisingly, after headlining and performing at numerous festivals in the years since her star began to rise in 2017, Stallion’s “Hot Girl Summer ” is her first full-scale headlining trek, and on this Tuesday night she’d sold out New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden.

Popular on Variety

The energy peaked and the crowd went batshit when a special guest walked onstage to show her support: Cardi B. The two rapped “Bongos” and their smash single “WAP,” although Cardi was more focused on dancing. Next, Stallion’s opener GloRilla, whose set earlier in the night got a visit from A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, came out joined the pair for “Wanna Be.”

“Y’all wanna hear ‘Wanna Be’ with muthafuckin Cardi B?” GloRilla shouted. “‘Wanna Be’ muthafucking remix about to drop y’all — be ready. Stay tuned!”

But just when it seemed the audience couldn’t get any rowdier, “Savage Remix” came thundering through the speakers, although Beyonce did not join in for their joint 2019 hit, which for many is filled with memories of learning TikTok dances at home to pass the time during pandemic lockdown.

She closed out “Savage” and the night, picking up another bouquet as confetti drenched the stage, blowing kisses and saying a tearful goodnight: “I love you, New York Hotties!”
