As if that wasn’t enough, Norfolk doesn’t scrimp when it comes to nature, and if you like flora and fauna then you can visit stunning locations such as the Norfolk Botanical Garden or the Virginian Zoo that is also housed here.

As Norfolk is on the water, you can also head down to the Nauticus National Maritime Center or Harbor Park, or you can even take a cruise here to see the city from another vantage point.

1. Chrysler Museum of Art

Nestled in the Ghent district, known for being for the most artistic area of the city, is the Chrysler Museum of Art. This museum is famous for being one of the most important museums in the whole of the Southeastern United States, so with that in mind make sure you don’t miss a trip here if you are an art lover.

The museum dates back to the 1930s, and is based on the art collection of Walter Chrysler, of automobile fame. Here you will find over 30,000 items in the museum’s collections that will take you back thousands of years. Expect sculpture, paintings, glasswork, photography, and decorative arts.

2. The USS Wisconsin

The USS Wisconsin is famous for being a mighty battleship that was in operation during the Second World War as well as the Korean War.

The ship was actually retired on the 1980s, only to be called up for service again in Operation Desert Storm in the 1990s.

After such an illustrious history, the ship is now a nautical museum and you can take a self-guided tour here where you can visit different parts of the ship including offices, an onboard chapel, a mess, and the staterooms of the officers.

If you prefer there is also a guided tour that you can follow where the full history of the ship will be explained to you and you can also see other parts of the USS Wisconsin including the captain’s cabin.

3. The Moses Myers House

The former home of the Moses Myers, a famous American entrepreneur who was instrumental in the growth of Norfolk, the Moses Myers House gives visitors a look into how people would have lived in this part of the United States at the turn of the century.

The Moses Myers House has been lovingly restored over the years and is known for being one of the first brick buildings to have ever been built in Norfolk.

Many of the original furnishings are still in place here and there is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the story and history of Moses Myers.

4. Norfolk Botanical Garden

The Norfolk Botanical Garden stretches over 150 acres and is divided into different sections that include over forty gardens, each with a distinct theme.

The flowers and plants here are seasonal meaning that the gardens bloom all year round and there is even a special garden dedicated to younger visitors. As well as a special space for youngsters, all visitors here can also enjoy themes such as a serene and relaxing Japanese garden, complete with traditional Japanese ponds, as well as a Hummingbird Garden that features all of the favorite plants of these dainty birds.

5. Hunter House Victorian Museum

Dating from 1894, the Hunter House Victorian Museum is the former home of the Hunter family and is the perfect place to come if you want to find out how a Victorian family would have lived in Norfolk.

The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and visitors can come here to see the period furnishings and antique memorabilia on show that are much as they would have been in the days of old.

6. The Virginia Zoo

Nestled next to picturesque Lafayette Park, there are over 500 animals housed at the Virginia Zoo, from elephants to rare species of frogs.

Not limited to indigenous species, you will find animals from all over the world here including Africa, Australia, and Asia.

The zoo is divided up into specific exhibits to showcase the different species, such the Trail of the Tiger which has tigers from Malaysia.

7. Nauticus National Maritime Center

The Nauticus National Maritime Center was founded in the 1980s and first opened its doors in 1994.

This center is dedicated to all things nautical related and to that end you can expect a range of interactive exhibits where visitors can get hands-on, as well as several interactive and large screen theaters.

Part of the center is the Hampton Roads Naval Museum which is known for giving visitors the chance to get up close with the exhibits, including a shark lab and a horseshoe crab touch tank.

There is also a marina and a cruise ship pier here as part of the center.

8. Naval Station Norfolk

Naval Station Norfolk is known as the largest station in the world, which is definitely something of a claim to fame.

The base spreads for over six kilometers over the waterfront of Norfolk and 134 aircraft are housed here as well as an impressive 75 naval vessels.

This is very much a working naval base and is actually home to the largest number of navy personnel in the United States, but despite this visitors can still tour the base with a member of naval staff who will explain the history and work of the navy, as well as offering a tour of some of the ships and aircraft carriers that are kept here.

Today, the Battleship Wisconsin lives in Downtown Norfolk and is open to the public with guided tours available. The ship holds various events throughout the year, including Winterfest, where the entire battleship is decked out in holiday lights.

From a distance, Nauticus looks like a toy perched on the largest Naval base in the world. Don’t be fooled by its whimsical exterior. Inside you’ll find more than 150 exhibits including computer interactives, films on a gigantic screen, exotic aquaria, touch pools, and even shark petting!

You’ll enter on 70-foot gangplank over the water to a covered deck. Once you enter into the “Wonder Hall” with skylights, you’ll take the sloped people mover through bulkheads to view the exhibits. Everything is in an open, 50,000 square foot loft space. It even provides balcony views of the harbor below.

Best of all, there’s no admission fee to see it all, making it one of the best free things to do in Norfolk. Expect to spend at least one to two hours here, as there’s a lot to see. You might even want to take some time just to explore the harbor outside!

Hermitage Museum & Gardens

 Self-guided tours are available to take with informational pamphlets, but we enjoyed the grounds more with a physical guide! You can take a tour of just the house or just the gardens, but we recommend taking a tour that combines both aspects of the grounds!

The Hermitage Visual Arts School offers classes during the summer that are perfect for beginners to art! Through Ceramics classes, you can learn to use a pottery wheel and make mugs. You can even make your own creations in an intermediate class!

In the Handmade Papermaking and Pulp Painting course, you can learn to make your own paper from upcycled materials! Make greeting cards or a work of art to frame. In Hands-on Garden Workshops, you can learn to plant small trees, shrubs, and even perennials!

American Rover

When you’re a city whose history is rooted in the waterways surrounding it, it doesn’t make sense not to set sail! On the American Rover, one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA, you’ll hit the waves on a 125-passenger sailing schooner.

Take a daytime or sunset cruise that take you over the smooth waters of the Elizabeth River and the Port of Virginia. You can help hoist the sails, take a turn at the helm, or just enjoy the view as your captain points out the attractions on the historic Norfolk Harbor.

The Two-Hour Harbor Cruise sails through the afternoon. Most popular for children and families, you’ll love seeing the sights of Norfolk Harbor in the glittering sunlight. Enjoy the Downtown Norfolk and Portsmouth skylines, Battleship Wisconsin, and private shipyards.

Adults, couples, groups of friends, and companies tend to favor the Two-Hour Harbor Cruise. On this sunset cruise, you’ll learn this is the most romantic way to see the Harbor and the light cascading over the waves. You’ll also enjoy lives music and cold beverages from the bar while you take in the views as night falls.

Harbor Park

Rated by Baseball America as the best minor league stadium in the United States, Harbor Park is one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA. Nested on the Elizabeth River, Harbor Park is home to the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team!

Harbor Park boats 12,067 seats, 20 luxury suites, two TV broadcasting booths, and even a 300-seat restaurant. This stadium may be minor league, but it’s made for the majors! There’s even a picnic area for private parties and concession food and beverages for stadium guests.

Even if you’re not a Baseball fan, there’s still plenty to do at Harbor Park. Harbor Park is also home to Norfolk High School’s football games, notably the championships! Harbor Park is also a bustling concert venue for high profile groups.

Doumar’s

Imagine a world where every single day is Ice Cream Day. That’s what you get when you visit Doumar’s, one of the happiest things to do in Norfolk VA. A fabulous ice cream parlor, Doumar’s is responsible for the waffle cone, having produced the first in the world.

Doumar’s makes ice cream, shakes, and sundaes the way your grandparents remember them when they were young. Like we said, Doumar’s created the waffle cone and they uphold their traditions. You can even see the four iron waffle machine from 1904 on display.

It’s not just about ice cream at Doumar’s. They also make North Carolina-style barbecue, limeades, and hamburgers too. You’ll be tantalized by the juicy, delicious barbecue in the window and eventually order an orange freeze to wash it down.

Doumar’s is so iconic, it has been featured multiple times on Food Network. You might recognized their dishes from shows like Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives hosted by Guy Fieri or on the Rachael Ray Show. You’ll have to stop in to decide if Doumar’s is worth the hype. Spoiler alert: it is.

Mermaid Factory

First of all, with a name like the Mermaid Factory, you have to know you’re in for a good time! One of the favorite things to do in Norfolk VA, you’ll love making crafts and browsing the art at Mermaid Factory!

At the Mermaid Factory, you’re getting a unique gift shop and a “paint your own” art studio all in one! It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for a fun way to spend the afternoon or just looking for a place to pick up that souvenier for a loved one. This is your one stop shop!

Paint a mermaid, handmade of plaster in Coastal Virginia. The ideal blank canvas, you can use acrylic paint, glitter, and other embellishments to decorate your mermaid! Even if you don’t have time to paint your mermaid on that day, you can take home a “to go kit” that double as great gifts or fun rainy-day activities!

Hunter House Victorian Museum

For you history buffs or fans of yesteryear, you can now transport yourself to the Victorian Era. To get a glimpse of another time, visit the Hunter House Victorian Museum, one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA.

The Hunter House Victorian Museum preserves the human stories of the late 19th and early 20th century life through the historic house, which now functions as a museum. Through the collections of the Hunter family, you can look through the lense of their everyday experiences.

It’s not just all history, either. While you can take tours of the house itself, you can also attend afternoon teas, lectures, literary programs, community partnerships, craft shows. Every once in a while, you can attend a Murder Mystery Feature, an immersive experience with actors!

One notable new exhibit is Victorian Pastimes: Games of Yesteryear! Inspired by Hunter House’s extensive puzzle and game collection, you can see the transformation and evolution of the American board game industry. It also shows how gaming in the home became a comfort during times of hardship.

Battleship Wisconsin

We’ve already talked about the Nauticus National Maritime Center. Perched on the largest Naval Base in the world, you would also expect to see some pretty big ships too, right? Well at this extension of the Maritime Center, you can.

Visiting the Battleship Wisconsin is one of the “must” things to do in Norfolk VA. Berthed at Nauticus, the Wisconsin is one of the biggest and final battleships ever built by the U.S. Navy. You can tour and even rent out areas like the main deck, the fan tail, Admiral’s cabin, and even the gun turret!

If a day touring the Wisconsin isn’t enough, you can enjoy Overnights aboard the Battleship! Go and spend the night on the Wisconsin where you can enjoy relaxed, informal conversations with enlisted Navy members and retired officers themselves!

While this is a fun place for families to go together, it might be hard to get the little ones interested in the history. That’s where Bucky the Badger comes in. Complete the scavenger hunt (made of clues about the ship) to find Bucky. He’ll be waiting for you!

Naval Station Norfolk

Naval Station Norfolk is the biggest Naval base in the world. Truly a sight to behold, this is one of the best things to do in Norfolk to get a great idea of our military history.

Naval Station Norfolk supports the operational readiness and preparedness of the US Atlantic Fleet of ships. The base provides facilities and services in order to enable mission accomplishment. It’s a very serious place.

As of late, on site tours have not resumed in light of recent events. You can however take a two-hour narrated Naval Base Boat Tour that departs daily from Nauticus. You’ll start with an entertaining commentary about the Battleship Wisconsin, by which you’ll sail by.

From a distance, you’ll be able to tour one of the world’s busiest seaports. Get those cameras ready to see the Atlantic Fleet made up of destroyers, guided missile cruisers, submarines, aircraft carries, and more!

You’ll also enjoy comfortable seating, a climate-controlled enclosed deck complete with air conditioning, an open-air shaded upper deck, a snack bar, and a souvenier shop as well!

General Douglas MacArthur Memorial

Dedicated to the history of World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, history buffs alike will consider a visit to the General Douglas MacArthur Memorial an absolute “must.” A museum and research facility, this is one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA.

Why Norfolk, you might ask? This is the site where General Douglas MacArthur was laid to rest. The Memorial dedicates itself to preserving and presenting the story of the General himself. Tribute is also paid to the millions of men and women who served alongside him throughout the two World Wars and the Korean War.

Tours can be as involved as you’d like them to be. While a lot of people prefer to have a physical guide in tow, you can experience the exhibits and memorial at your leisure with downloadable guides in the form of a podcast.

If you’d like to engage yourself or your kids a little more, then go to their website and download some of the interactive scavenger hunts. Try your hand at the Artifact Scavenger Hunt, the Douglas MacArthur History Scavenger Hunt, or the World War II Scavenger Hunt.

Coastal Food Tours

There are only ten navy museums operated by the Naval History & Heritage Command. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum is one of them, making it one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA! It celebrates the long history of the U.S. Navy in the Hampton Roads region of Viriginia.

Permanent exhibits include detailed materials on the Battle of the Chesapeake, the American Civil War in Hampton Roads, the Great White Fleet, World War II, and the Cold War. You can see naval prints, ship models, and underwater archaeology as well as the remains of two Civil War shipwrecks, the USS Cumberland and CSS Florida.

The Hampton Roads Naval Museum also offers guided tours, a lecture series, and educational programs run by an active volunteer corps. Although only available by appointment, you can also access a reference library, archives, and photographic collections of regional naval material.

Tour A WWII Battleship

The Nauticus is a fascinating maritime museum filled with interesting historical exhibits. The museum showcases gun paraphernalia, sailor artifacts, and unique maritime tools and equipment. As you wander through the museum, consider how these non-state-of-the-art tools helped us win so many battles.

The USS Wisconsin , a WWII warship, is also included in the Nauticus complex. The battleship is open for self-guided tours along with guide-led, uniquely focused tours. The 90-minute Guided Command and Control Tour explores intimate areas of the ship. Visit the captain’s cabin, the admiral’s cabin, the navigation bridge, and more. Be prepared to climb up four different decks’ levels while you explore these areas that have, in the past, only been open to high ranking officials. Another interesting tour is the Guided Life in the Engine Room Tour . Travel down seven floors to the bowels of the battleship to explore the powerful engine room. On this tour, you will be required to climb steep ladders and share very close spaces, but the claustrophobic experience is worth the effort.

Exploring the softer side of Norfolk includes taking in some exquisite art. From Tiffany and Chihuly to beyond, the pieces at the Chrysler Museum of Art will surprise and delight you. Travel guide: what to see & do in norfolk, va.

• Saltine (100 E. Main Street) - the best brunch that I've had in 2019 so far, and possibly the best brunch that I've had ever! Saltine is a top ranked seafood restaurant for lunch and dinner in Norfolk, but they do an incredible brunch on Saturdays which shouldn't be missed,   I had a wonderful mojito with my brunch and was able to sample several of the popular menu items- there wasn't anything I didn't like! The Dutch Baby pancake was especially good, and the presentation was beautiful.
• Lamia's Crepes (401 Granby Street B) - I love a good sweet crepe for breakfast, and Lamia's was incredible! I had the S'mores crepe, which was super sweet, but incredibly delicious. The perfect holiday weekend breakfast treat! Lamia's also has a lot of savory crepes on their menu. 
• Cure (503 Botetourt Street) - A fun coffee shop located in the Freemason district. I was treated to breakfast here on my last day by Sarah and Nicole from VisitNorfolk! I love a good chai latte, and the one at Cure didn't disappoint. The Freemason area is filled with beautiful, historic homes- I wish I could've spent longer exploring the streets near here!
• Wisteria Cafe (inside Chrysler Museum of Art) - Perrin and I spent part of Sunday afternoon checking out the Chrysler Museum, so we decided to eat lunch in the museum cafe. It was wonderful. I loved the decor (there's lots of Wisteria inspired things!), and Perrin and I also really enjoyed the food. The mini sweet potato ham biscuits are incredible. 
• The Grilled Cheese Bistro (345 Granby Street) - We actually had dinner here the first night in Norfolk instead of lunch, but I think this would probably be a better lunch spot since it's very casual! This is the destination if you love grilled cheese sandwiches. They have tons of varieties of gourmet ones on the menu!
• Varia (100 E. Main Street) - This is the Italian restaurant and wine bar within Hilton Norfolk The Main! Perrin and I enjoyed glasses of wine and split a charcuterie board to start, and then had a pizza. We thought the food and wine was great, and I also loved the incredible decor and atmosphere of the restaurant. It's so gorgeous inside that a bridal party for a wedding happening at the hotel came into the restaurant just to take their pictures!

• Nauticus - martitime themed museum and battleship.
• Norfolk Botanical Garden - I adore botanical gardens, and this is the largest in the state.
• MacArthur Center - Norfolk's mall, which is located in downtown. I have never really lived in a city that has its largest shopping center downtown, so I just thought this was cool! (In Charlottesville, our shopping centers are a few miles outside downtown.) 
• Mermaid Winery - You know that I love my Central Virginia wineries! I wish I'd had time to visit this Hampton Roads area winery to see how it's similar and different to the ones in Charlottesville.
• Explore Historic Ghent - A historic neighborhood that's filled with beautiful homes, I would've loved to walk around and explore. 

Your weekend in Norfolk looked so fun and I love places that are short road trips from us. I have never been to VA, but your making me want to come visit.

Drive approximately 18 miles (29 kilometers) east of the city for the white sandy beaches and waterways of Virginia Beach . Sunbathe, take part in water sports and enjoy the views, outdoor restaurants and shops of the 3-mile (5-kilometer) Virginia Beach Boardwalk.

If you can pull yourself away from the oceanfront, travel to some of Norfolk's other attractions. Observe some of the thousands of marine creatures representing more than 300 species at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center . Breathe in the fresh air as you hike along the trails of First Landing State Park where English colonists landed in 1607. Nearby is Cape Henry Lighthouse climb up this late 18th-century tower for delightful views of Chesapeake Bay. The newer, 19th-century lighthouse is closed to the public.

For dining options, try the restaurants of the Waterside District , a dining and entertainment complex on the banks of the river.

To get to Norfolk, drive, arrive by train or fly into Norfolk International Airport. Travel to beaches, nautical sites and family-friendly attractions by car or public transportation.

Downtown Norfolk

Downtown Norfolk boasts a historic district, upscale shopping at MacArthur Center, and notable attractions like Nauticus and the USS Wisconsin. Trendy restaurants and bars can be found on Granby Street, offering a sophisticated nightlife experience.

While Ocean View might not have many sights to explore, venturing just a little farther will lead you to top things to see and do like Ocean View Beach and Norfolk Beaches.

East Ocean View

FY 2024 per diem highlights

We establish the per diem rates for the continental United States (CONUS), which includes the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia. Federal agencies use the per diem rates to reimburse their employees for subsistence expenses incurred while on official travel.

Federal per diem rates consist of a maximum lodging allowance component and a meals and incidental expenses (M&IE) component. Most of CONUS (approximately 2,600 counties) is covered by the standard rate of $166 ($107 lodging, $59 M&IE). In fiscal year (FY) 2024, there are 302 non-standard areas (NSAs) that have per diem rates higher than the standard rate.

Since FY 2005, we have based the maximum lodging allowances on average daily rate (ADR) data. ADR is a widely accepted lodging industry measure derived from a property's room rental revenue divided by the number of rooms rented. This calculation provides us with the average rate in an area. We remind agencies that the Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) allows for actual expense reimbursement when per diem rates are insufficient to meet necessary expenses. Please see FTR § § 301-11.300 through 11.306 for more information.

FY 2024 results

The standard CONUS lodging rate will increase from $98 to $107. All current NSAs will have lodging rates at or above FY 2023 rates. The M&IE per diem tiers for FY 2024 are unchanged at $59-$79, with the standard M&IE rate unchanged at $59.

• Charles Town, WV (Jefferson County)

Per diem localities with county definitions shall include "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city as well as the boundaries of the listed counties, including independent entities located within the boundaries of the key city and the listed counties (unless otherwise listed separately)."

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.
