Whether it’s rum and cigars, sun and surf or dining and dancing, nowhere does good vibes quite like the Caribbean.

A mojito or a pina colada? Reggae beats or salsa rhythms? Trekking across volcanoes or relaxing with sand between your toes? These are the only questions you need to answer while kicking back on the brilliant beaches of the Caribbean. Spend days taking in the tropical sun from white sand beaches or wading under the clear blue water while snorkeling for marine life. Fill the nights with food and music, eat fresh fish and jerked chicken, listen to Bob Marley and dance the cha-cha (though maybe not all at once).

What countries are in the Caribbean?

The countries that are in the Caribbean are:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Dominican Republic
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis
  • Saint Lucia
  • Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago

What is the weather like in the Caribbean?

The Caribbean is mostly known for its warm, tropical climate. It does, however, have an alternate rainy season that brings tropical showers from around May to November every year. This time of year is known as the wet or summer season because temperatures will get to their yearly peak around July/August and the rainfall will get to its highest monthly average.

There is intense humidity from May to October for most of the region, with tropical storms and hurricanes typically occurring from June to November.

As the Caribbean is an island region, expect moderate to intense windy conditions all year.

Aside from the wet season, the temperatures remain pretty constant throughout the year. Daily highs are likely to sit between 82-90ºF and lows can range from 72-79ºF.

The dry season is from December to April however, the seasons can differ depending on the region in the Caribbean.

When is the best time to visit the Caribbean?

The best time to visit the Caribbean is from December to May for the dry season.

The busiest time of year falls during the months of February and April as the northern hemisphere's winter temperatures and school holidays coincide, bringing in many sun-chasing visitors.

If you're looking for a quieter time, avoid the major holidays and look to go around April before the dry season ends but tourist numbers have lessened.

With tropical storms and the hurricane season starting from May and running to November, it can be riskier traveling to the Caribbean during the wet season. However, because the weather deters many travelers, it means fewer people around.

Storms and hurricanes are most likely to occur from June to November while the rest of the wet season can have sudden, intense downpours and rained-out days. But not all places will get as much wet weather as others, so it's worth doing a bit of research before you plan.

Do I need a visa to travel to the Caribbean?

Whether you need a visa for the Caribbean will depend on your passport, the length of your stay and the countries you are visiting. For many travelers, including those with a UK, US, Canadian or Australian passport, you may need to pay an entry tax or a visa waiver fee or purchase a tourist card for countries such as Cuba, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic. Many countries in the Caribbean may allow foreign travelers to enter as long as they are only staying for a certain amount of time. This can change depending on the country visited and your nationality. Certain countries may also have a fee to extend your stay. Countries that may not require a visa for entry may still require each traveler to have a return or onward ticket.

If you are visiting the Caribbean, make sure you have thoroughly checked the entry and exit requirements specific to your nationality and make sure you do this for each destination you are traveling to or transiting through.

See visa travel advice for travelers from  Australia , the  United States , the  United Kingdom ,  Canada  and  New Zealand .

The page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in the Caribbean?

Tipping in the Caribbean is typically done at the discretion of the individual. If no gratuity has been added to the check, it's customary to add about 10-15% minimum.

Generally, tips are given to bellhops, housekeeping and room service. You may also tip bartenders, spa workers, barbershops, taxi drivers and waiters, it's up to you.

What is the internet access like in the Caribbean?

Internet access in the Caribbean is usually accessible, especially in the tourist areas.

Restaurants and venues may even have their own wi-fi for guests to use; sometimes, this may be for a small fee.

Can I use my cell phone while in the Caribbean?

You can use a cell device in the Caribbean. However, some areas, mainly rural and remote island areas, may not have coverage.

Several destinations also have local phones you can rent during your stay, while in other areas, the roaming function on your own device will work to keep you connected. However, ensure you've turned on global roaming before leaving your home destination. If you intend to activate global roaming while in the Caribbean, be sure to check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur when using this option, as sometimes this can be expensive.

What are the toilets like in the Caribbean?

Toilets in the Caribbean are typically western porcelain flush toilets. Some locations, specifically remote away from major hubs, may use a toilet hose or even a pit latrine if there is no indoor plumbing. You may need to pay to use toilets while traveling in the Caribbean and sometimes toilet paper isn't supplied - so it's a good idea to carry small change and toilet paper while out.

Also, keep an eye on whether you can flush toilet paper, as in some countries, you may not be able to.

Can I drink the water in the Caribbean?

Some countries in the Caribbean do have safe tap water, however, it may be chlorinated and cause stomach upsets.

Countries where tap water is not safe to drink include:

  • the Dominican Republic

Tap water safety can also vary within countries depending on if you are outside the tourist regions. For this reason, it's not advisable to drink water from the tap in the Caribbean.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable bottle or canteen with filtered water if you can – your group leader will provide larger and less disposable water containers for refills on private transport days when they have the resources available.

It's also best to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in the Caribbean?

Major credit cards are widely accepted in the major tourist hubs in the Caribbean. Most countries will also have sufficient ATM access in these popular areas, however, they can sometimes be unreliable.

It's advised to carry cash when visiting more remote islands and destinations just in case card payments are not accepted.

What public holidays are celebrated in the Caribbean?

With so many countries and territories in the Caribbean, public holidays can vary from island to island. Many of these countries include Christian holidays in their calendars, as well as some more regional celebrations like Carnival.

  • 1 Jan: New Year's Day
  • 7 Apr: Good Friday*
  • 10 Apr: Easter Monday*
  • 1 May: Labour Day*
  • 29 May: Whit Monday*
  • 8 Jun: Corpus Christi*
  • 25 Dec: Christmas Day
  • 26 Dec: Boxing Day

Carnival celebrations 2024/2025

  • Feb: Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti and the Dominican Republic
  • Apr: Jamaica
  • Jul: St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Lucia and Cuba
  • Aug: Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados and Grenada

These dates may vary. See the current list of public holidays for a full list.

Is the Caribbean safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Homosexuality is illegal in several Caribbean countries with imprisonment used as punishment for some homosexual acts. These countries include Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago. In these countries, a high amount of discretion is recommended for LGBTQIA+ travelers.

While the other countries in the Caribbean have made homosexuality legal, the general attitudes towards the LGBTQIA+ community in this region are still conservative. It is recommended not to show public affection while traveling in this region as public affection can be uncommon, even among opposite-gender couples. Stigma still remains in some parts of the culture of this region, especially in rural areas. It is strongly advised that LGBTQIA+ travelers be discreet and mindful of local attitudes so as to avoid negative attention.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Caribe Tours stops its trips to Haiti due to insecurity

caribe tours okap

Last Sunday, a Metro bus, another company that travels from the Dominican Republic to Haiti, was hijacked in the Croix-des-Bouquets commune on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.

Caribe Tours, one of the two companies that offer passenger transport services between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, decided to paralyze its operations  due to insecurity in Haiti,   where a bus leaving Santo Domingo was hijacked last Sunday.

”  Caribbean Tours has paralyzed travel to Haiti for the moment (…) we held a meeting with the DNI (National Department of Investigations), and they are preparing the place to get security from the Haitian Police,” he said this Friday to Efe, the executive vice president of that company, Paúl Guerrero.

He assured that talks are being held between the two countries’ foreign ministries, in which the Dominican embassy in Haiti and the Haitian legation  in Santo Domingo also participate.

“We will have a meeting (with Dominican authorities) next week to determine what is going to be done,” added the executive, who recalled that the Haitian Police “frustrated” the hijacking of a bus belonging to a company from that country.

The Caribe Tours company made  four daily trips from Santo Domingo to Port-au-Prince and one from the Dominican capital to Cap-Haïtien (north, Haiti’s second-largest city).

Last Sunday, a Metro bus, another company that travels from the Dominican Republic to Haiti,  was hijacked in the Croix-des-Bouquets commune  on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.

Eight Turkish citizens, eight Haitians, and the Dominican driver traveled in the vehicle. The Haitian National Police assured that the group was kidnapped by the  400 Mawozo  armed gangs, one of the most powerful of the many in that country.

In that same area, the Dominican diplomat Carlos Guillén Tatis was kidnapped on April 28 and remained in captivity for four days before being released.

The Dominican Republic announced that  it does not negotiate with “terrorists” and that in “no way” will it pay for the ransom  of any of its citizens kidnapped in Haiti.

This was expressed in a press conference by the Vice Minister of Consular and Immigration Affairs, Jetzel Román.

The Paris of the Antilles

Cap-Haïtien is Haiti’s second largest city, popular with travellers because of its proximity to world-class beaches and UNESCO heritage sites.

A key city during the Caribbean colonial period, Cap‑Français (as it was then named) earned the nicknamed the Paris of the Antilles for its sophisticated architecture and artistic culture. It was the capital city of the French colony of Saint Domingue from 1711 until the Haitian Revolution, when it became the capital of the Kingdom of Northern Haiti under King Henri Christophe. Christophe renamed the city from Cap‑Français to Cap-Henri. When Christophe died in 1820, the whole island of Hispaniola was briefly unified, and it was in the early phases of this (re)unification that Cap-Haïtien was given the name it has today. Mostly, though, you’ll hear this beautiful city called simply “Le Cap” .

What to see and do in Cap-Haïtien

The Cathedral

The early 20th century Notre Dame Cathedral (also known as the Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral, Cap-Haïtien Cathedral and (French) Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l'Assomption.

Héros de Vertières

Héros de Vertières (Heroes Monument of Vertières) is an open-air sculpture park dedicated to the heroes of the 1803 Battle of Vertieres.

The Battle of Vertières was the last major battle of the Second War of Haitian Independence , and the final battle of the Haitian Revolution led by Jean Jacques Dessalines. It was fought on November 18, just south of what is now Cap-Haïtien.

An inspiring site that celebrates a remarkable moment in history, a visit to the Heroes de Vertieres is especially empowering for travelers from the Haitian diaspora. The monument is on the western outskirts of the city, within a five-minute drive of both Hôtel Impérial and one of our favorite places to eat in Cap-Haïtien , Lakay.

The Bottle Gate(s) (French: "Barrière Bouteille" / “Barrières Bouteilles")

These iconic bottle-shaped structures mark the historic entrance to the city.

The Iron Market (French: Marche au Fer)

Named after the iconic Port-au-Prince Iron Market , this lively market is housed inside a Victorian-era cast iron pavilion. First built in 1890 under Haitian engineer Alexandre Bobo, Cap-Haïtien’s Iron Market has attracted tourists since the 1960s thanks to its impressive period architecture and the huge range of handicrafts sold here - especially colorful ritual objects associated with vodou practice. Today, the Iron Market is a chaotic sprawl of craftspeople and food vendors hawking their produce.

Dance to live music

Let your hair down like a local with these Cap-Haïtien musice scene stalwarts: Septentrional and Tropicana d’Haiti. Catch them at a venue called Versailles (named after the French royal palace).

Lakay Restaurant, Cap-Haïtien

Photo: Anton Lau

Where to eat

Lakay : Restaurant Lakou Lakay prepares excellent (and huge!) traditional Creole feasts - just be sure to make a reservation.

Boukanye : our favorite place to drink coffee in Cap-Haïtien, this pirate-themed hangout is a great bar by night but a cozy café by day.

Cap Deli : serving up some of the freshest food in the city, Cap Deli is the place to go in Cap-Haïtien for American-style burgers and pizza.

Lolo : a new Italian-Haitian restaurant, Lolo serves exquisite fresh pasta and fine wine.

Must-try local specialities: Cap-Haitien cuisine is particularly well-known for its cashew-based recipes, so be sure to try some local cashew dishes while you're in town! Native to Brazil, cashew trees are now an important crop across the Caribbean, and most of Haiti’s are grown right here in the North Department.

Amiga Island, (Ile-a-Rat) close to Cap Haitien

Best beaches

The best beaches nearby are Cormier, Labadee and Île-à-Rat Island (Amiga Island).

The beach at Cormier is one of the most under-appreciated on the island – and only a twenty minute drive from downtown Cap-Haïtien.

Labadee Beach is one of the crowning jewels of Haiti, with fine sands and crystal-clear blue water that attracts cruise ships from around the world.

Île-à-Rat (Amiga Island) is a tiny island off the beaches west of Cap-Haïtien. This little paradise is a microcosm of what makes Haiti one of the greatest little countries in the Caribbean, with fine white sand beaches, shady palm trees, warm turquoise waters, incredible fresh seafood - and fewer crowds. The swimming is superb, and snorkelers can find half-buried colonial artillery and anchors.

For USD $40 a boat taxi from Labadee will take you to Île-à-Rat, and for an extra USD $15 they'll cook you up a fresh lunch of lobster, octopus, crab or fish, all caught locally. Make sure you take some ice-cold bottles of rum and Prestige with you for the trip!

Where to sleep

All-inclusive resorts:

Cormier Beach Resort

Ocean view hotels:

Top hotels include Hôtel Impérial , Hotel Satama , Habitation Jouissant , Habitation des Lauriers and Mont Joli

Hidden Gem:

Kay Lolo Plage

Only accessible by boat, Kay Lolo Plage is a boutique B&B secluded in a private cove and surrounded by tropical forest. The separate bungalows and villa are in great condition and offer travellers a private beach with gorgeous views, birdsong and very exclusive vibes. There’s no wifi or running water here, but you’ll find kayaks, paddleboards and a breakfast cooked just for you.

Citadelle Laferrière, Milot, Haiti

Photo: Ricardo Lartigue

Awesome day-trips

South of Cap-Haïtien, Citadelle Laferriere is a hilltop fortress built by revolutionary leader Henri Christophe.

Sans-Souci Palace shares a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Citadelle Laferriere. A visit to both sites is considered essential for any trip to Haiti, and the hike (or horse-ride) from Milot to the Palace and then on to the Citadelle is well-worth the effort.

The city of Dondon is located about two hours south of Cap-Haïtien and has been settled since pre-colonial times when Haiti's indigenous Taíno people lived there. This little corner of Haiti attracts a lot of tourists, and the main drawcard for visitors is the opportunity to explore the stunning system of grottoes nearby.

Getting there

American Airlines fly direct from Miami to Cap-Haitian, with fares starting at US $127 and a flight time of less than two hours.

From Port-au-Prince , Haiti’s capital city, Sunrise Airways will take you to CAP in 45 minutes for less than US $100, but it’s more fun, and you’ll see more of Haiti, if you jump on a cross-country bus or rent a car. On wheels, the journey from PAP to CAP will take four hours or more, depending on your route. Will you drive inland via Lake Peligre and Bassin Zim , or along the Caribbean coastline via Montrouis and Gonaïves ?

Coming from the Dominican Republic ? Caribe Tours, the most popular bus company in Dominican Republic, runs daily from Santiago to Cap-Haïtien. The journey takes roughly five hours: two and a half hours from Santiago to Dajabon, on the Dominican border , then another hour from Haitian border town Ouathamije to Cap-Haïtien. Return tickets cost US $25 per person, plus an extra US $25 border-crossing fee.

On our all inclusive beach and snorkel AM Icacos island boat tour, you will be able to explore the beautiful and diverse marine life, clear turquoise waters and white sandy beaches on the best possible spot on the island.

Be prepared to have the best time while onboard or in the water enjoying our delicious tropical drinks, great music, and the best customer service around. Join us for snorkeling in Fajardo, Puerto Rico and more!

  • At Caribe Bliss we are very thankful for our amazingly beautiful marine environment and we are committed to protecting it. Marine conservation and preservation is paramount along with the safety and enjoyment of our guests. For these reasons we would like to remind our guest that most of the beautiful spots we visit are protected as well as all the marine life you will see and enjoy. We encourage our guest to enjoy this blissful experience and use all available means to create and enjoy memorable moments. It is very important to avoid at all cost touching or taking any sea life that could potentially put in danger the marine ecosystem around the island.
  • We would like remind our guest that these environmentally sensitive areas while protected are still exposed to many threats. In an effort to conserve and protect them we encourage you to use long sleeve performance shirts or “rash guards” as well as ball caps or hats for sun protection rather than sunscreen lotion.
  • At Caribe Bliss we strive to provide a blissful experience by taking you to the best spots however destinations are at the captain’s discretion and these may change depending on weather conditions. Please remember that your safety will always be our number one priority.
  • We would also like to remind our guest that this snorkeling beach trip will take you on a trip through open waters. If you’ve never been on a boat before or are prone to motion sickness we encourage you to take over the counter motion sickness remedies with food at least one hour prior to the trip.
