Hooked on Houses

A Fun Place to Get Your House Fix

A “Bewitched” House: 1164 Morning Glory Circle

The House from the TV show Bewitched

Would you believe that until I started researching the house from the classic 1960s sitcom “Bewitched,” I had never actually seen the show?

Although I’m a little late to the party, now that I’ve been binge-watching all of the seasons from the series I could get my hands on, I can see why so many readers asked me to feature Samantha and Darrin’s house.

Let’s take a look back at the house and the sets that were designed for it!

orange-line1 (1)

Samantha and Darrin’s “Bewitched” House

Bewitched TV sitcom house pilot episode

In the first season we got to see Darrin (Dick York) and Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) go house hunting.

When Samantha and her mother Endora first visit the house at the beginning of Season One, it has just been built, and there isn’t a blade of grass in the yard.

Samantha fixes the place up with a quick twitch of her nose.

Bewitched TV sitcom house exterior after Samantha moves in

If only home improvement could be that easy!

Samantha and Endora took turns trying different looks for the house and arguing about which was the best version.

When they step into the house for the first time, this is what it looks like:

Samantha and Endora explore new house on Bewitched pilot episode

You can see the backyard in this shot through the glass doors:

Endora and Samantha in new living room on Bewitched

They fall in love with the place and buy it. Here’s how it looks after they move in:

Samantha at the front door of her house on Bewitched TV sitcom

What’s that penguin doing in there? I suspect some magic was involved… 😉

Bewitched TV house staircase season one

These episodes were originally in black and white but were later colorized.

The tell-tale sign of colorization is when a character opens their mouth and their teeth look gray.

Bewitched TV sitcom sets living room season one

The interiors were all created on soundstages at Sunset Gower Studios.

Bewitched TV sitcom house sets dining room

According to 1164.com, a website for “Bewitched” fans:

The interior and backyard scenes, as well as some garage and front porch scenes, were all filmed in a soundstage.

The set consisted of a modular (but complete) first floor and back yard.

It also contained the hallway visible above the steps (though those doors at the top only led to tiny closets!).

Bewitched TV show kitchen Avocado fridge

Her range was a Frigidaire “Flair” with a pull-out cooktop and glass oven doors that opened upwards.

Frigidaire also offered a flair wall oven with similar glass door..

The laundry area at the back of the kitchen (with the avocado appliances!)

Was pretty modern for 1964:.

All of the upstairs shots were filmed on another set built

With a few rooms that were changed for various purposes..

Darrin and Samantha's bedroom on Bewitched

Check out the massive lamps on either side of their bed and the cushion that goes across the head of it.

I wonder where they stashed their sleeping pillows during the day?

Samantha's bedroom on Bewitched TV show

“Bewitched” was on the air for 8 years.

In Season 2, Samantha and Darrin had a baby girl named Tabitha (whose name was spelled Tabatha for the first few seasons and then changed later on).

Tabitha's nursery on Bewitched

The den set on the first floor doubled as the nursery set for Tabitha. According to 1164.com:

For nursery scenes, they just put a fake wall up outside the door to hide the view into the kitchen.

For den scenes, they put brown paneling up over the pink walls, covering the nursery window area with the plain wall near the den’s fireplace.

Tabitha's nursery on the TV show "Bewitched"

When Darrin gets home from work, we get a look at the garage and driveway:

Darrin in the driveway of the Bewitched house

The pilot for “Bewitched” was supposed to begin filming on November 22, 1963, but was postponed because of Kennedy’s assassination.

The first episode aired in 1964.

opening credits of the TV show "Bewitched"

The house was built on the back lot of the Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank, California.

It sits on Blondie Street alongside other famous facades used for classic shows like “The Partridge Family” and “I Dream of Jeannie.”

The House from the TV show Bewitched Warner Bros back lot

Did you know the Christmas Vacation  movie was filmed in this neighborhood?

“The Middle” was shot on this street, too, and if you pay attention, you can often spot the “Bewitched” house in the background.

You can see how it looks on the Warner Bros back lot today on their website . BTW, I also featured the adorable cottage from the Bewitched movie . Visit my  Houses Onscreen page  to see the others I’ve featured, listed from A-Z.

I remember that first decorating episode so well — Samantha and Endora each tried different looks for the living room and dining room! And I also noticed how often that the decor by the front door changed as the years went by …. it would be fascinating to see the progression! LOL! LOVE the stove in the kitchen! Loved the TV show so much! Another classic movie house(s) :”I Married A Witch” with Veronica Lake! And .. of course … “Practical Magic”!

Did your Mum give you a reason why you couldn’t watch that show ??? I remember being really quiet when I wanted to stay up and watch a show…..I remember a show called Peyton Place that we were too little to watch…with Mia Farrow, drove me crazy, all my relatives would whisper about it. Funny the things we remember !!!

Bewitched was my favorite shop growing up. I watched just to see her house. The front door in her house is the same as mine. I call it my bewitched door. Remember, she redecorated the house for the last few years. Thanks Anne

Kathy– Aunt Amelia’s right. My parents didn’t want us to watch anything with witches or ghosts or anything even remotely “supernatural” in it. We weren’t allowed to go trick-or-treating or celebrate Halloween when I was little, either.

They’ve lightened up a lot over the years, though, and now we can laugh about how shows like “Casper the Friendly Ghost” were forbidden! -Julia 🙂

Anne– I’ve only seen the first two seasons, so I didn’t know the house was redecorated later on. I’ll have to rent some of the later seasons to see! -Julia

Oh how I loved that show when I was a little girl. It was on in syndication in the early 70’s. i remember when JKF died – I was the 4th grade and his funeral interrupted my birthday party – 11/20/54 (birthdate) – such memories. The principal came in our class room to tell us – all the teachers were sobbing. The kids – we knew we should be upset, but we really didn’t understand the magnitude of it. I guess I had just turned 9. So Bewitched was my era. It’s funny to see it in color like that – it was originally in black and white, wasnt it? I thought it was – maybe I’m wrong about that though. Mrs. kravitz – she cracks me up still. I still refer to my nosey neighbor as Gladys or Mrs. Kravitz and everyone my age knows what I mean. Poor Gladys – Samantha drove her crazy. And think of all the girls named Samantha today! All because of the show. Tabitha was never as popular a name as Sam though.

What a wonderful flashback – as you can surmise, I thoroughly enjoyed it! Thank you!!! I’m sure it this took a lot of hard work.

Who knew that Samantha owned Fiestaware?? Growing up, Bewitched was my favorite show and was in syndication. I’ve read a ton about the show & its stars because I still love it.

The first couple of seasons were in black & white, so these pictures have been colorized. The Danish modern furniture reminds me of my first house (which I vaguely remember, but of which I have tons of pictures–as I was 5 when we moved). The kitchen appliances changed over the years with the other decorating. My favorite was that they put up a copy of Rembrandt’s “Girl with a Broom” by the front door.

Here’s a great link if any of your are interested in cool trivia, etc. https://www.bewitched.net/

My family had the exact same stove when I was growing up! It lasted forever and we were so sad when it finally died! The stove top was stored in the unit itself and you pulled it out to use it. As you can see in the picture, the oven doors opened by pulling them straight up. All my friends would come to my house and comment on how cool our stove was. Thank you; I enjoyed the article!

I’m trying to remember how the house was decorated when it very first started and the episodes were in black & white. I don’t think there were many of them, and I can’t remember if it was modern like the penguin shots here or if that’s when it was more Early American.

My mother is still living the avocado appliance dream and she’s quite pleased with herself that she’s hung on to that fridge for 42 years because now it seems cool again instead of just sad (as it was for the bulk of my life). It does, however, sound like an asthmatic hoot owl now, so we’re not sure how much longer she’ll have it.

Julia, Loved the trip down memory lane… or Morning Glory circle. The Warner Bros. lot is still used often. Pushing Daiseys was filmed there, as well as 2 1/2 men. There is also a Bryant air conditioner, as well as a Fruit of the Loom Christmas commercial that used the Bewitched house. The opening credits for Friends was done around the fountain in front of their “Boston” row houses right around the corner. The Walton house and church were just west of Bewithced House. I found several sites that went so far as to identify makes and models of appliances and furniture used on set of Bewitched. Yes I’m addicted.

I believe that the 1971 TV movie “Brian’s Song” about football players Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayes had some scenes with these “Bewitched” sets: The den, kitchen and a basement off the kitchen area in the movie that looked very convincing also. Perhaps more rooms, but it has been awhile since I saw it, and I know some of the scenes are definitely near the last part of the movie. Don’t recall the first part of the movie! Another way to spot colorized films: anything that was intended to be white in was just left alone and ended up gray. If you notice, the brick wall behind Darren and Samantha is obviously still ‘black-and-white’…including everything inside the cubbies, and the plant in the color vase.

I like the neighbors’ arbor, but their garage roof sure needs work!

I was about nine or ten when Bewitched was on and I thought that Samantha’s house was just a mansion!!lol…we lived in an old farm house. I also loved the Cleavers house on Leave it to Beaver. No one I knew lived in houses like that.lol.. .-= Arlene @At Home with the Grimms´s last blog ..My To Do List =-.

Wow, this was my favorite show as a kid and I watched it in the same house I’m reinventing as my own today. My husband and I are living in the house I grew up in. My kids are the 5th generation on my father’s side to live in this house. I just found your site and LOVE it! I noticed a Windsor chair behind the “davenport” in one of the living room shots. I’m hooked on Windsor chairs as well. Doesn’t it make you wonder sometimes how much of what we love all goes back to the first 10 years or so of life?

Loved Bewitched…..I wanted Samantha’s life and that house! I also adored I Dream of Jeannie. I remember once in an early show, Dr. and Mrs. Bellows took Jeannie home with them, because they found her in Tony Nelson’s house and thought he was “enslaving” her or had her brainwashed or something. Tony and Roger had to break in to rescue her. The Bellows’ house in that episode I could have sworn looked exactly like the Stevens’ house on Bewitched! Since they were filmed at the same time on the same lot……couldn’t be a coincidence??

I love Bewitched (and the newer Bewitched movie with Nicole Kidman…that house is wonderful as well) and still love that house. I used to to think that open staircase was so fancy!!! I loved the show and house then, and I still love it. They redecorated the living room and dining a couple times. I remember floral couches and Samantha changed her hair and clothes, much more hippy looking, toward the end of the show. Any way to get any of those photos?

Been meaning to suggest That Girl, Marlo Thomas’s apartment. I was always trying to see into her kitchen! They have DVDs out of it now. Once again, it changed design over the years, I believe.

As a huge “Bewitched” fan, thanks for the wonderful post!

In case anyone’s wondering, the first two seasons (1964-1966) were filmed in black and white, then colorized in the 2000s. The last six seasons (1966-1972) were filmed in real color. In 1970, there was a fire on the set, so the cast and crew went to film episodes in Salem while it was being remodeled. That’s why it looks so different the last two seasons (shag carpet, harvest gold, brown, baby blue, new kitchen stairs leading nowhere… of course Endora insults the redecoration. Bwah hah!)

Interesting trivia: Elizabeth Montgomery and husband William Asher were friends of the Kennedys. Asher even produced JFK’s birthday party in which Marilyn Monroe (in)famously sang “Happy Birthday.” They were crushed by the news of the assassination, but decided to go on with the rehearsal for the pilot anyway since it was what “he would do” (according to Asher). Later, Montgomery would campaign for Robert Kennedy’s ill-fated 1968 bid.

I’m curious as to when the people who said “Bewitched” was verboten in their houses grew up. Obviously it was very popular in the 1960s (#2 nationwide), so plenty of people then watched it anyway. Was the banning of all witchcraft-related things (no matter how innocent) a slightly more modern phenomenon? Post-1970s? And if so, I wonder why? .-= arfies´s last blog ..Theater =-.

I too, am a big Bewitched fan, having grown up with it . (I’m 55). I always thought the house was absolutely gorgeous. It has been used fairly recently in a Fruit of the Loom Christmas ad (2007, I believe). I saw it the other day, and told my husband that that was the house in Bewitched. Thank you so much for the tour. Someday if I’m lucky enough to win the lottery, I’m going to have a home built just like it, since I own 2 acres of land in rural Northern Arizona. I think that would be awesome.

12.19.10 at 1:36 pm

The only thing I would add to the house would be a basement.

12.19.10 at 1:39 pm

No problem!! I think a house like this would put my little community more on the map, and be kind of a tourist attraction. I live in Cordes Lakes (Mayer), AZ. I would also put a huge in-ground pool in the backyard, and the house would be solar pwered, as my current home is.

Bewitched was officially banned in our house too, but my sister and I managed to sneak and watch it. Even at my young age, I distinctly remember being a bit upset that a new Darrin, and a new kitchen with a second stairway, suddenly appeared with no explanation. I loved when Elizabeth got to play cousin Serena, letting go of her proper housewife persona and getting all mod and groovy.

In Popular Culture [ ]

  • The house that is associated with the 1164 Morning Glory Circle address was used in the 2021 Marvel television show, Wandavision. It is featured at the end of the eighth episode, as the house that served as the temporary residence of Agatha Harkness. Additionally, some irony serves in the fact that " Bewitched " itself is a primary reference of the show's 1960's themed episode, and later the house makes its appearance.

Take a 3D Tour of Sam and Darren’s Bewitched House

What a fun look at this nostalgic show.

Rose Heichelbech

Growing up watching iconic shows like I Love Lucy , I Dream of Jeanie , and Bewitched we got accustomed to seeing these same sets each week. The sets even began to feel not unlike the friendly houses of your friends and neighbors. But, even though we watched every week there were a lot of things about some of these sets that may not have made a lot of sense. That’s because concessions had to made by the set designers to accommodate colors or other factors. Even though they weren’t filmed at real houses, each set had a certain layout of a home it was mimicking on screen. One thoughtful YouTuber has a channel devoted to looking into the floor plans of these iconic TV homes and today we’ll be looking at the set of Bewitched with her.

bewitched house tour

Marina Coates’ channel is all about those wonderful TV houses we grew up. She is clearly a big fan of these designs and digs into the history of the shows and their production.

But, she goes one step further by making 3D animations of the floor plans and interiors of the sets as they were intended to be seen, as whole houses or apartments. This gives a brand new perspective on what it would have been like to live inside these fictional TV homes- had they been real that is.

bewitched house tour

In the case of Bewitched the colorful set was filled with emblematic 1960s design moments. But, Coates said she chose to focus on season 3 as the first 2 seasons were filmed in black and white and then colorized decades later. These colorized episodes do not give a true sense of the colors used for the set furnishings.

As is the case with many of our favorite old TV shows the outside of the house does not match with the interior. It was common practice of the era to pick a nice-looking home to represent the outside and to even possibly film some scenes there. But, when creating the sets the designers created what they thought would be appealing to viewers instead of reflecting the real floor plans of the homes they had filmed the exterior shots of.

bewitched house tour

Thus Darren’s den in the front of the house not only has a lot of weird angles that probably wouldn’t be drafted in a real home, it also doesn’t contain the bay window that we see from the street. There were a few other oddities about this set that Coates found as well, such as a painting that kept reappearing in various rooms, even within the same episode. But, despite the fact that the set crew seemed to always be making changes to the appearance, somehow it still always felt like Darren and Samantha’s house.

The earth tone decor in shades of brown, yellow, and avocado was so evocative of the era. And, it’s so nice to be able to remember the show in this way. Watch the video below for a look inside the first floor of the Bewitched house (the second floor is in another video ). Their home sure did go through a lot of changes over the 8 seasons it was aired!

Where Do Samantha and Darrin Stephens from ‘Bewitched’ Live? Take a Magical Tour of Their Home

Gwyneth Paltrow Lists Home

If you’re a fan of Classic TV , you’ve probably always imagined what it would be like to take a tour of some your favorite television families’ homes. We’ve been able to do so with The Brady Bunch   thanks to HGTV’s A Very Brady Renovation , but what about the Petries of The Dick Van Dyke Show , the Ricardos of I Love Lucy , the Taylors of The Andy Griffith Show or the Munsters from the show of the same name? Well, now you’ve got your chance to take a virtual guided tour through all of those homes and more, including — pertinent in this particular case — Samantha and Darrin Stephens’ of Bewitched .

elizabeth-montgomery

All of it is the brainchild of MockingbirdLane.design’s   Marina Coates , who decided to go back to school when her kids were grown and earn a degree in architecture. From that point forward, she freelanced from home, which, by its nature, meant that there would be some periods slower than others. Her first impulse was to send out samples of her work to developers in an effort to try and get more work — but then she elected to go with impulse number two.

bewitched-home-overhead-with-stats

“For whatever reason,” she explains in an exclusive interview, “I thought to myself, ‘You know, I’d rather spend this free time walking through The Dick Van Dyke Show  house.’ It’s something I’d always wanted to do and now I had the skills, so I built — virtually — that house and walked through it. And then I was just hooked and kept doing one after the other. That was about two years ago.”

agnes-moorehead-main

Between then and now, she’s showcased her work on a pair of YouTube shows :  Cinematically Inspired Design , which takes design secrets from the cinema and brings them into your living room; and  Behind the Scenes , giving computer-generated tours of TV and movie homes.

bewitched-home-main

Which is all fine, but it’s one thing to say, “Hey, I want to walk through  The Dick Van Dyke Show  house,” and another thing to actually make it happen. “It is  a process,” she laughs. “I start by  obsessively  watching the episodes, looking at details of the house and seeing views that I need to see in order to draw it up. Generally, I start on paper and then go to the computer. And when I’m done, and if all four walls connect, I know I must be close. And there are things you can go by, like a main door is usually three-feet wide, bathtubs are five-feet long — things like that help you get the measurements pretty dang close.”

mockingbird-lane-design-marina-coates

Not to be all cliched about it, but practice is certainly making all the difference. “I keep trying to improve in accuracy, too, so more and more of the items in the homes are exactly what they were on the show,” Marina details. “Which means I have to build them rather than just importing a component. I almost hate to admit this, but The Parent Trap  house took about 200 hours, but that included the research and then actually making the program, which takes a while, too. I guess the house itself was maybe 120 hours for that one. But I did I Love Lucy , which is a thousand square foot apartment, in a week.”

paul-lynde-in-pot-on-bewitched

The home from  Bewitched (the show is currently airing on the Antenna TV network ), the focus in this case, was a set that actually showed the audience all four walls, which, she points out, isn’t common. “They did that on  Leave It to Beaver  and  Andy Griffith , too, so they’re all from around the same period. By doing so, it makes it feel more like an actual house. Whereas  I Love Lucy  and most of the others are missing a fourth wall that you never get to see. But that’s kind of fun, too, because then I get to put in my own take of what might’ve been there. At the same time, even though they have all four walls, in any given episode we never get to walk through the whole thing, looking right and left. That’s what makes it different when you take these tours.”

Marina Coates

The Full Living Room from the House Entry

As she explains it, Marina needed a starting point in terms of what season of the show she would be basing her virtual rooms on. “The home changed so much over the course of the series that I had to choose a season and stick with it,” she says. “I chose season three, because seasons one and two have been colorized, so we can’t be sure of the actual colors. But beginning in season three, we know the  real  colors. Now, if you look at a picture of the living room stripped of all of its furnishings, try to picture in your mind what you remember seeing there in the show. It went through  a lot  of transformations over the years.”

bewitched-home-fireplace-wall

Columbia Pictures Television; Marina Coates

Fireplace Wall

“Let’s start with the iconic fireplace wall in seasons one and two. It was white brick with building niches on one side and a cream-colored bookcase on the other. In season three, we begin to see the fireplace wall the way most of us probably remember it, with red brick and a built-in wood bookcase on either side. But then a strange thing happens in just two episodes that season, which were actually filmed earlier: The fireplace wall changes to something we haven’t seen before and won’t see again. It’s a red brick fireplace, not white, with building niches on the left-hand side and a brown wood bookcase on the right. No magic involved, but by episode 15 of season three, it’s back the way we remember it best. That’s a lot of shenanigans for just one season.”

bewitched-backyard-potting-shed

Backyard Potting Shed

“The thing most interesting about the backyard is that people are curious about what that brick wall is that stands out from the house. It looks like more of the house than it can possibly be. Even though the show never took us around the corner to see what it was, I turned it into a potting shed. Samantha has a little plant stand on the outside and does her potting there, so we have to assume what it was and I’m going with that.”

Gazebo backyard

Backyard Gazebo

“In the gazebo you can see a Chinese lantern hanging there with matching red lawn chairs below it. It’s also the place that Aunt Clara landed in a few times.”

Backyard view into house

Backyard View Into House

“This view from the backyard into the house was significant to me, because I’m my own target audience and I was curious what it would look like. On the show, we only ever saw Sam looking out from the house, never in.”

bewitched-home-backyard-1

Sony Pictures Televison; Marina Coates

The Backyard

Other events that took place in the backyard was a swimming pool that would appear and disappear so Sam could do a few laps, and which helped to drive neighbor Gladys Kravitz crazy. “And then there’s a tree back there,” says Marina, “where Endora and Uncle Arthur appeared, often just hanging in midair on a branch.”

Dining room overhead

Overhead View of the Dining Room

“The only thing that comes to mind about the dining room is a chandelier that would sometimes be there and sometimes wouldn’t — and it had nothing to do with magic. And the nook would sometimes be missing; there would just be a wall instead of that really cute little orange nook. Things like that changed all the time.”

Dining Room view to kitchen

The Dining Room View to Kitchen

Just an angle that Marina wanted to capture. She does point out that sometimes those shudders were there and sometimes they weren’t, representing yet another example of a lack of continuity, not that that many people seemed to notice. Of course, Samantha was  magical, so she could change things whenever she wanted to. Just sayin’.

Kitchen washer dryer area

The Washer/Dryer Area of the Kitchen

“This is minor, but the washing machine and dryer is sunk into the wall, which couldn’t be the case because the garage is actually right there. So that’s impossible. Some people have told me that the washer and dryer were sometimes in the closet,  but I have yet to find them there. Oh, and the kitchen window would be blocked by the garage, too, so that couldn’t be there.”

Kitchen corner

Kitchen Corner

In interacting with the fans, what Marina has discovered is that the homes of TV families actually have their own fandoms apart from the shows themselves. Those fans definitely notice things and one of those things was the Frigidaire Flair oven in the kitchen.  “You can still find them on eBay,” Marina explains. “They’re really a hot item, even though not a lot of them work anymore. But people love it.”

Kitchen stove

What Is That Thing?

“The other thing that people love is that brick oven stove-looking thing,” she adds. “We never get to see anything in it, but it looks like a brick fireplace and we’re left to wonder what it does.  We never saw her use it, we just saw her cooking on the stove itself. Maybe it was just for show. It’s actually similar to one that was in the Brady Bunch  kitchen and they never used it either. Maybe it was designed for pizza?”

Kitchen to hallway

The Kitchen to the Hallway

Just another example of attempting to capture the look of a specific area of the set that wasn’t show quite as much in the filmed episodes.

bewitched-home-kitchen-view-to-dining-room

Kitchen View to Dining Room

“I included this shot because we rarely got to see all the way from the dining room to the fireplace in the living room. In that photo with Aunt Clara and Tabitha, you can kind of see it. I just made sure the image I created showed it.”

bewitched-home-entryway

“I did this one, because everyone loves that painting. It’s the one they remember most from the show. and the reason it’s significant is that it’s called ‘Girl With a Broom.’ Another reason I did that one was so that I could leave the door open and you could see outside. Again, not something we’d usually get to see.”

Living Room Window

Living Room Window

“This area actually changed a lot. At one time there was even a piano sitting there, because they needed it for that particular episode. A little Baby Grand. Sometimes the bar was there; you just never knew.”

Patio doors

Patio Doors

“Just a nice view into the backyard. The one on the top is the widest shot I could find from the show. With the bottom one, we get to see it more as though we were actually standing there in a real living room. Your eyes wouldn’t just see that narrow view.”

bewitched-home-view-from-living-room-into-dining-room

Master Bedroom Fireplace Wall

“Now if you think about the rooms from the top floor being placed over the main floor, as they were shown to us on TV, the master bedroom and bathroom were located over the living room. The problem with that is that the living room has a high ceiling, so it couldn’t actually be there.”

Master Bedroom by Highboy Chest

Master Bedroom by the Highboy Chest

Just another view of the room, though Marina’s additions includes the window curtain being parted so we, again, can get a sense of a bigger world out there.

bewitched-home-master-bedroom

Master Bedroom

The photo on the top provides an oh-so-rare reveal that Darrin and Samantha actually had a bathroom. “The bathroom was described as being ‘tomato red,’ which surprised me. So I did that view with the door open. Then later on [as seen further below] I went  into  the bathroom to give an idea of what it might have looked like. I guarantee you there are people out there going, ‘They didn’t have a red bathroom.'”

Tabitha 1

Tabitha’s Bedroom

“The walls in Tabitha’s room are really wonky; there’s barely a 90-degree wall in there so that the cameras can get in and turn around. The walls split out at such an awkward angle and you’d never actually build a room like that, but on TV it doesn’t look that way. It looks like a normal room. The other thing that’s not possible is that they sometimes show the characters looking out the curtain into the backyard. In one episode, where there are gremlins in Tabitha’s room, they look out her window and this time it’s the front yard. Well, either one would be impossible. Her window would be up against the master bedroom’s wall.”

bewitched-home-changing-fireplace

Changing Before Our Eyes: The Living Room

One comment Marina wants to make is regarding her thought process on a project like this. “We all have in our head the way we believe these homes looked — what we remember being where, but they actually changed constantly and yet we have them fixed in our minds a certain way. And rarely will any two fans of the show agree on the way it was,” she suggests. “I myself always think I know the house like the back of my hand and yet always discover things when I’m researching it to create the home that I never noticed just from watching the show.”

bewitched-home-bedroom-wall

More Changes: The Wall Behind Their Bed

“And not just minor changes like you see in a real-life home,” she elaborates, “but major changes — a bathroom in the den, then it’s a closet, or an open area behind the bed becomes a wall, or they go through several different fireplaces.  Things change so much without us noticing, that whenever I model a TV home I have to pick a season and stick with it. Often, I have to pick a few episodes within that season, because major changes can occur even just from episode to episode.”

bewitched-home-exterior

Ignore the Exterior of the Home

As was proven with  A Very Brady Renovation , frequently the exterior of these homes in no way could match the interior. The solution? Ignore it. “They simply can’t exist as shown inside,” Marina emphasizes. “But my whole thing is that I want to show how the room, how the house, looked to us on the show on the inside . I’m not trying to take the exterior as shown and make them match up. There are actually books out there where people do blueprints of the houses. So you  could  build them, but they’re never as they were on the show because of those wonky walls. If you built it, it would look crazy .”

Can You Visit the Bewitched House?

By: Author The Drivin' & Vibin' Team

Posted on January 3, 2022

The house from Bewitched is one of the many things that won over fans. We got to watch the characters going about their magical day in a perfectly suburban, un-magical-looking brown Tudor-style home.

Inside, the characters descended grand staircases, ate in a cute kitchen with bifold doors, and stashed novels on built-in bookcases.

We don’t blame you for wanting to live there or at least go there. But can you?

Let’s take a look!

bewitched house tour

About Bewitched

Bewitched was a sitcom that aired for eight seasons starting in 1964.

In the show, a witch marries an ordinary man and tries to be a typical suburban housewife. They have two children, both of whom have special abilities. The show’s plots are similar to other sitcoms about marriage and family, but there’s a magical twist.

Elizabeth Montgomery plays the witch, Samantha. Her over-involved mother, Endora, played by Agnes Moorehead, never approves of Samantha’s husband, Derrin. Dick York played Derrin for the first six seasons, but the show cast a different actor when York was in poor health.

What many people remember most about the show is that Samantha made magic happen by twitching her nose.

The show was nominated for 22 Emmy awards and awarded three. It consistently ranks on lists of best tv shows of all time, thanks mainly to Montgomery’s charming performance.

Warner Bros set tour

Where Is the Bewitched House?

The street address was 1164 Morning Glory Circle. The series gives conflicting information about whether the house was in Westport, Connecticut, or Patterson, New York.

However, the house is actually at the Warner Bros Ranch in Burbank, California, on Blondie Street. It still stands, though it looks a bit different now with different colors and extended siding.

The ranch is not open to the public. The WB Studio, a mile away, is available for tours, though they don’t have any sets from Bewitched.

What Other Shows Used the Bewitched House

Many shows and movies were filmed using buildings in that neighborhood, including National Lampoon’s “Christmas Vacation.” In addition, the Warner Bros Ranch features exteriors from many shows, including “I Dream of Jeannie” and “The Partridge Family,” plus the fountain from “Friends.”

Pro Tip: Fans of the sitcom Friends will be curious to know Can You Visit Central Perk from Friends? Find out!

What Took Bewitched Off the Air?

Ultimately, Bewitched ended because star Elizabeth Montgomery was tired of the part. She was also divorcing the show’s producer William Asher and didn’t want to keep working with him.

On this trail, you’ll see the famous Hollywood sign (from as close as you can legally get) and views of the skyline. Note that there isn’t any shade, so it’s best to go in the morning or evening.

Reviewers agree that the trail is well-marked and maintained with the final mile paved. Dogs are welcome on leashes. You’re also likely to spot some horseback riders.

The trail directs hikers to either Canyon Drive or Griffith Observatory , which have restrooms, parking, trash cans, and places to rest.

Wildwood Canyon Trail is a moderate 2.3-mile out-and-back trail from which smaller hikes, such as the 0.8-mile Wildwood Little Loop , are accessible.

AllTrails notes the Little Loop as “easy,” but reviewers agree it’s considerably steep. The inclines are mostly gravel as well, so you need shoes that grip well. This trail offers views of Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley. The trail ends near four radio towers and a fantastic view of the city.

The Wildwood Canyon Trail is also best for those who love a challenge. The hike is all uphill, so it may be suitable for training but not for inexperienced hikers. Given the terrain and the heat, it’s essential to arrive early in the morning and drink a lot of water.

Dogs are allowed on-leash, but they too need to be nimble and well-hydrated.

Note that there is a police training area nearby, and you may hear gunshots coming from it.

Best Camping Near the Bewitched House

Hollywood rv park.

This park is right in the middle of Los Angeles and close to attractions, and that’s a big plus. There are 180 sites, all of which are full hookups. It also has showers, laundry, cable, a gym, and WiFi.

While you don’t have to go far to see entertainment, there are fun things to do in the park as well. The Hollywood Playhouse is a performance venue right at the park, and they offer music and plays. The park contains pretty hand-painted murals throughout, giving it a distinctive vibe.

Reviewers also report that the owner and staff are amiable. It’s been family-owned since 1976, so it’s here to stay. Sites are quite narrow, though, and the staff sometimes uses a forklift to assist with parking.

Daily rates are $65.

Only if you have an insider connection. There are photos of the Warner Bros Ranch over the years online, and you can also see virtual recreations of the house in videos.

Burbank is full of studios, soundstages, and sets from a ton of shows, though. You won’t have trouble finding other favorites to visit at the Warner Bros Studio or elsewhere.

“Bewitched” is streaming now, so a new audience could get interested and lead to Bewitched-themed attractions. Anything’s possible if you believe in magic.

I have always loved Samantha's house! Does anyone else remember a small spiral staircase in the kitchen? I always imagined Sam n Darrin put that in after the following conversation:

Darrin: Did you use witchcraft today?

Sam: Just to pop upstairs from the kitchen to check on Tabitha. I had something on the stove...

Darrin (exasperated): Saaaammm! *(takes deep breath)* It's where the stairs land, huh?

Sam: Oh my stars! We've looked at it from every angle (*pop* *pop*) and it just looks funny!

Darrin: Yeah, but we don't want Tabitha developing bad habits when she starts walking...

Sam: ...and if she sees me do it...

Darrin: Hang on, come into the kitchen w/ me for a sec -

I cannot tell you how fun this is! Well Done!!! I loved the huge oven/stove that Samantha had too! The I Dream of Jeannie house would be fun too! I just keep thinking of homes that would be so cool to see like this! Keep them coming!

Bewitched was one of my favorite shows to watch growing up! You’ve got such great taste, things I wish I could dream up, you just do it! I can see Samantha really loving this remodel.

Having followed you on instagram, seeing your blog completes the story of how and where you come up with such clever recreations, right down to finding specific pieces of furniture! Brilliant, love it!

History of Tver Oblast

According to archaeological excavations, the first permanent settlement on the territory of the present Tver region existed in the 9th-10th centuries. In the 1130s-1140s, during the struggle of Rostov-Suzdal princes against Novgorod the Great, on the site of the former, unfortified settlement, a new fortress was built - Tver. It was first mentioned in the chronicles in 1208.

As an independent state, the Tver principality was formed in the 1240s-1250s. This initially sparsely populated and relatively remote from the Horde region attracted numerous settlers. From the first decades of its existence, the Tver principality played an important role in the social and political life of the Russian lands.

In the 14th-15th centuries, Tver competed with Moscow for leadership in the unification of Russian lands. It was one of the main centers of handicraft production and international trade. An indicator of the breadth of foreign trade relations of the Tver principality was the famous trip of the Tver resident Afanasy Nikitin to India in 1466-1472.

More historical facts…

In 1485, the Tver principality became part of the Moscow state. The troops of Ivan III, after a three-day siege, captured Tver. In 1569, during the campaign of Ivan the Terrible against Veliky Novgorod, the town was looted by the oprichniks, and, in the Time of Troubles, Tver was burnt by the Poles.

In 1775, the Tver governorate was formed, in 1796 - the Tver guberniya (province). In the second half of the 19th century, the local industry began to develop rapidly facilitated by the construction of the Nikolayev (Oktyabrskaya) railway.

In 1931, Tver received a new name - Kalinin, in honor of Mikhail Kalinin - a Bolshevik revolutionary. In 1935, Kalinin oblast was established. During the Second World War, fierce battles took place on the territory of the region. During the fighting of the initial period of the war, Kalinin, as well as other towns in the region, were almost completely destroyed.

In the post-war period, this region became an important industrial center and transport hub with enterprises of chemical industry, weaving, heavy engineering. In 1990, the historical name was returned to the city, and the region was renamed Tver Oblast.

The Top 10 Things to Do in Tver, Russia

Tver packs a travel punch bigger than its size would suggest

Boris SV/Getty Images

When someone asks if you've ever been to Tver, Russia, you might think they're talking about a street in Moscow  with a similar name. In fact, Tver is a separate (albeit somewhat small) city about two hours northwest of the capital. Although far smaller than any of Russia's major cities, Tver is an interesting place to spend a day or two. If you're on the lookout for things to do in Tver, Russia, start your search here.

Tour an 18th-Century Palace

From the outside, the palace of Putevoy Dvorets might not seem not much, particularly if you've previously had a chance to visit some of the opulent royal complexes in Moscow and St. Petersburg . However, Tver's most famous structure has an impressive backstory. Namely, that it served as a resting point for famed Russian Tsarina Catherine the Great on her journeys between Russia's two largest cities during the 18th century. These days, an art gallery resides within the Palace, which makes it even more worth a visit on your trip to Tver.

Get Lost in a Botanical Garden

If Putevoy Dvorets is the manmade structure of Tver that makes you feel like royalty, than the plants inside the Botanical Garden of Tver State University are nature's answer to that. Originally founded in the late 19th century as part of a monastery that once sat on the present-day site, Tver Botanical Garden is presently home to 350 species of plants, flowers, trees and shrubs, which attract an estimated 25,000 visitors per year.

Go to Chuch

Of course, it's not just history and nature that's appealing about the prospect of a trip to Tver. The city has a rich religious heritage as well, connectedly mostly to the Russian Orthodox branch of Christianity . Visit the humble Church of St. Michael of Tver, for example, to admire an understated and relatively traditional example of this sort of architecture, or the Orshin Voznesenskiy Monastery to walk through a slightly larger and more ornate structure.

Cross the Volga

Like many cities in the most populated parts of Russia, Tver straddles one of the Federation's great rivers — in this instance, the Volga. However, beautiful riverine scenery isn't the only alluring option this waterway presents to those who visit Tver. Most specifically, you can cross Starovolzhskiy Most, the oldest trans-Volga Bridge in Tver city. Dating back to the 19th century, this bridge is the ultimate monument to Tver's history as a modern industrial city, especially when you consider that a great majority of Tver residents who've lived in the last 200 years have likely walked across it.

Enjoy Two Takes on Local Cuisine

Russian cuisine doesn't get as much love as it should. Whether it's a hot bowl of borscht beet soup on a frigid winter day, vareniki dumplings filled with cherry to satisfy your sweet tooth or the timeless classic of noodles stroganoff , Russia is a far more formidable destination for gastronomy than its reputation might have you believe.

Two of the top restaurants in Tver approach Russian dining in decidedly different ways. The celebrated Manilov Cafe presents a more traditional take on Russian cuisine, with large portions of dishes made more or less true to their original recipes. Trendier restaurant Gubernator, on the other hand, presents more artistic versions of Russian dishes, with a menu that's generally more innovative and varied, incorporating the flavors of the former Soviet Republics of the Caucasus region, and even a number of pan-European items.

Learn the History of Russian Tea

Tea might not be a beverage you typically associate with Russia, but the Muzey Tverskogo Byta museum helps dispel that notion. Though the exhibits here are particular to the practices of tea making and drinking in Tver, there's also information about the consumption of tea in Russia as a whole (including details on the traditional Samovar used to brew tea leaves). After you finish enjoying the exhibition, you'll have the opportunity to purchase some tea (though you'll have to head to the flea markets of Trekhsvyatskaya Street if you want to purchase your very own Samovar to take home).

Pray with the Spirit of Catherine the Great

Putevoy Dvorets isn't the only spot in Tver that pays homage to the legacy of Catherine the Great. St. Catherine's Convent, for example, was name in honor of Russia's former Tsarina, and is built in a style iconic of the construction of that era. Even if you aren't a particularly religious person, a visit to St. Catherine's Convent is something of a communion with the famous ruler's spirit.

Drink Something Besides Vodka

You might think vodka is the only thing to drink in Russia, especially in smaller Russian cities such as Tver. However, this would be a false assumption. For example, a spot called Mamonts serves up a variety of cocktails to accompany its diverse selection of international fare.

Honor the Heroes of Chernobyl

Chernobyl is hundreds of miles from Tver, which might make you wonder why a statue honoring rescuers from the nuclear tragedy stands here. Nonetheless, the Park of Chernobyl Heroes in Tver is an enduring monument to the bravery of the first responders of the then-Soviet Union, who helped to minimize loss of life as the reactor melted down. At a bare minimum, this is a wonderful green space to pass a relaxing afternoon in Tver.

Continue on to Moscow (or Somewhere Else)

Just as Tver was a stopping off point for Catherine the Great, it's probably neither your first nor your last stop in Russia. Assuming you're coming from either Moscow or St. Petersburg, you could visit one of these cities after you're finished exploring Tver. Another option would be to use "mainstream" Russia destinations as a jumping off point for a larger trip, whether to Vladivostok in the Russian Far East,  Kazan in the autonomous Republic of Tatarstan or any of Russia's other dozens of great cities.
