Bushnell Tour X Laser Rangefinder Review

  • on August 17, 2015

50 Words or Less

The Bushnell Tour X laser rangefinder is a first tier rangefinder with some features you won’t find anywhere else.  Ability to change the display and turn slope on and off are huge benefits.

Introduction

Each year, the top manufacturers add something new to their top of the line laser rangefinders.  Some years the addition is minimal, but sometimes it’s a big step forward.  With the  Bushnell Tour X laser rangefinder , it’s definitely the latter.  Adding the ability to change the display to an already impressive laser makes it one of the best available.

Bushnell Tour X Laser Rangefinder_0034

Set Up & Ease of Use

As with most modern rangefinders, the  Bushnell Tour X  is very easy to set up and use .  The battery compartment opens easily without tools, and from there you just need to push the power button.

Bushnell deserves praise for making the advanced features easy to use as well .  Switching the display from grey to orange only requires flipping the switch on the back of the unit.  You turn slope off and on by replacing the face plate.  The menus for adjusting brightness and switching between meters and yards are the most intuitive I’ve ever seen .

My one small complaint is with the focus adjuster.  On one hand, this is a great feature that makes the image very clear.  The problem is that it’s so prominently placed I found myself bumping it every time I took it out of the case, which then required that I adjust it back into focus.

Accuracy & Performance

First and foremost, the  Bushnell Tour X laser rangefinder  is extremely accurate and has very long range .  It works anywhere from 5 to 1,300 yards and can find a flag up to 450 yards.  Thank to Bushnell’s E.S.P. 2 technology, the yardage displays in a fraction of a second.  But of course, that’s just the start with the Tour X.

The new headline feature for the Tour X is the ability to change the display from grey to orange with the flip of a switch.  Bushnell calls this Dual Display Technology.  I was able to see the power of this feature in my first round with it.  I teed off at 5:20 AM, so I started with the orange display.  In those pre-dawn conditions, the grey would have been nearly invisible.  As the sun rose, I switched to the grey because it’s ideal for bright conditions.  To me, this is the best advancement in laser rangefinders since slope adjustments .

Speaking of slope, the Tour X has two face plates – one that enables slope adjustments and one that makes the laser conforming for tournament play .  Just as with the display, the Tour X provides the best of both worlds .

On the course, the Tour X is easy to use.  It’s well made, and it should fit comfortably in the hand of most adult men.  Finally, it’s worth pointing out that the Tour X comes with one of the best cases that I’ve encountered .  It has two closure systems – a zipper and an elastic band – so you can opt for security or speed.  What’s really clever is that you don’t need to close it at all during your round; the case opens enough to slide the laser in and out, but not enough for it to fall out.

Bushnell Tour X Laser Rangefinder_0025

The  Tour X laser rangefinder  is Bushnell’s top of the line model for 2015, and that comes with a steep price tag: $500 .  While you can certainly get good lasers for less, the Tour X does justify its price tag by having a killer feature you won’t find anywhere else.  If you want the very best and are willing to pay for it, the Tour X will not disappoint .

Bushnell Tour X Laser Rangefinder_0029

If you’re in the market for a top of the line rangefinder, the  Bushnell Tour X  is one that you must check out.  With its combination of speed, accuracy, and high end features, it’s easily one of the two best rangefinders on the market .

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser Review

Martin Hopley

Bushnell has led from the front in laser rangefinders over the years and the Tour X Jolt is one of their premium models.

It offers many of the features that have been successful in other Bushnell lasers, but the big change is the addition of interchangeable faceplates to enable and disable the elevation measurement function in a way that has been approved by golf's ruling bodies.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

Use the Tour X Jolt with the black faceplate and it measures only distance and that makes it competition legal.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

Switch this with the red faceplate and the USB connector on the inside activates Bushnell's Slope Technology.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

This then shows the actual yardage and below this the degree of elevation that alternates with the adjusted yardage to show how far it is playing in reality. If you play a course regularly then you can note down these measurements or memorise them so that you will know how this will affect your club selection.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

This can be 1 yard or more for every 1° of elevation change and I found that shots which looked almost flat were in fact a few degrees up and therefore allowing half a club extra gave the right result.

Just so you don't get mixed up, the red faceplate has a 'Does Not Conform' message on the bottom of it and you can't cheat it by plugging in any old mini USB connector. Apparently.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

The Tour X Jolt is a generous sized device and fits very easily into an adult male hand. The contoured rubber grip top and bottom offers some protection against bangs and gives the laser a robust feel.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

It feels very well made with a solid case and all the buttons, dials and faceplates giving re-assuring clunks and clicks when used.

As with most lasers, the Bushnell Tour X Jolt is very easy to use. Point it at your target and use the the red button on top to activate it and then push and hold it again with the crosshairs on the flag.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

When it has locked onto the flag, the Jolt technology gives a little vibration so you know you have hit the target with the laser at least. This is very clever at just doing this on flags and not harder objects like trees and is another bit of reassurance.

The display is clear and with 6x magnification it is easy to find the target you want to measure. Bushnell say it can measure a flag up to 450 yards away and I found large objects were easily measured at that range and more, but flags were more difficult, not least because you need a steady hand.

I managed to get a Jolt on a flag at 354 yards, so those downwind, downhill par-4s on a firm links course in summer are now in range! This is very impressive as many lasers struggle to pick up flags at over 250 yards and this is where you get what you pay for.

The Bushnell E.S.P.2 (Extreme. Speed. Precision) technology within the Tour X Jolt not only picks up long range objects but does it with speed. This is a very quick laser and the 2nd generation of E.S.P is 5 times faster than before and accurate enough to show yardages to 1 decimal place with a claimed accuracy of +/- 1 yard.

The other feature I like on the display is the ability to change from black to red text to account for different light conditions. This is controlled using the Vivid Display sliding switch below the viewfinder on the back of the device and the brightness of the red can also be varied across 4 settings.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

The red setting is the best one for most lights and made reading the good sized numbers quick and easy.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

The B logo on the left hand side of the Tour X Jolt also acts as the Mode button for you to vary the Vivid Display setting and switch between yards and metres.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

Below the Vivid Display switch is the battery compartment for the supplied CR2 battery. It has a little flip up handle to enable you to unscrew the compartment lid to change the battery, which is easy to use and also ensures the battery is securely fastened in.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

You may not think this is a big deal, but I have had at least one laser where the battery cover has opened by accident and the battery has fallen out during a round and got lost.

Also to help your vision is an adjustable focus wheel above the viewfinder so that you can adjust it to suit your eyesight or lack of it. It is a little susceptible to getting moved in general use as you take it in and out of the case, but it's location above the eye piece makes it easy to re-adjust.

The Tour X Jolt comes in the box with a carry case, soft cleaning cloth, instruction booklet and the second faceplate complete with its own protective bag.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

The carry case is one of these rigid material cases that will provide good protection for your Tour X Jolt. It has a karabiner and a fabric loop on the back for attaching it to your bag. You can either zip it up or use the elasticated loop over the top to enable you to access the laser more quickly.

Bushnell Tour X Jolt Laser

Protecting your device is important for a number of reasons, not least to protect it in transit so that it works. But mainly it is to protect your investment, because this is not a cheap device at the thick end of £400/$500.

I did say you would get what you pay for earlier and with the Tour X Jolt, not only do you have two devices in one with a legal device that can also measure slope, but also the speed and long distance accuracy that sets this apart from lasers that are around half this price. What you are paying for is better quality components and build.

For serious golfers who want the option of measuring elevation, then the Tour X Jolt has everything I think you would need from a laser, short of a front/middle/back GPS screen, in a quality package that feels solid and well made.

But even a GPS screen would detract from the simplicity of owning a laser with no recharging, no course updating and point and shoot accuracy to where the flag is, rather than where the green is.

Is it a lot of money for a laser?

Is it worth it?

Bushnell Tour X Golf Laser Rangefinder Review

Bushnell Tour X Golf Laser Rangefinder Review

The new Bushnell Tour X golf laser rangefinder marks a turning point in this high-tech niche. I mean, not necessarily this product, I am referring to lasers being used in helping golf players achieving their best game possible. With the laser gizmos, weekend warriors are now able to get actionable info, like factoring slopes into rangefinder readings, which is pretty cool from a “noob”’s point of view but completely illegal for professional golfers. Well, Bushnell’s new Tour X Laser incorporates all Bushnell’s state of the art technologies in a device which can switch between slope reading and standard reading modes in two shakes of a lamb’s tale.

This means that you can use the Tour X in any situation, i.e. regardless that you’re a pro or a casual golfer ( this is called Exchange technology, i.e. Tour X comes with two interchangeable face plates that can be swapped , modifying the measurement/mode capabilities of the rangefinder). Other interesting features of the Tour X include the next gen of ESP and zoom technology while the PinSeeker display will allow you to observe instantly if you’ve hit the flag or not. This baby is rated to be pretty accurate at distances of 450 yards, while its increment measurements are half a yard inside of 125 yards (it can display in the metric system also). This means that the Tour X is highly accurate, in layman’s terms. The Tour X also features Jolt technology, i.e. you’ll feel a vibration which announces that you’ve managed to hit the flagstick during your game. Another cool addition is that you have the possibility to toggle displays, I mean the colors, i.e. you can choose between a black or a red color for the background (Dual Display technology). All these awesome features come at a hefty price tag of almost $500, but you can always regard the Bushnell Tour X as an investment in making the best out of your favorite game. Basically, this gizmo is an excellent choice for tournament players or for perfectionist casual golfers.

Bushnell Tour V4 laser rangefinder

It's smaller, lighter and gives distances quicker but does it improve on the V3?

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

Bushnell-Tour-V4

The Tour V4 improves upon the excellent V3 model without an increase in the price. The change in the rules means that more golfers can and should upgrade to the slope version to increase their accuracy and ultimately hit more accurate golf shots. It's compact and light, easy to use and extremely fast and accurate. One of the best lasers on the market for sure that is worth your consideration.

Fits perfectly in the hand and is stable to use despite being smaller and lighter. Excellent range and the JOLT function is a reassuring feature to have

The focus toggle is quite stiff. Can be time consuming to switch Slope function off

Why you can trust Golf Monthly Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

Golf Monthly's Bushnell Tour V4 laser rangefinder review, the replacement of the popular Tour V3 which now has an extended range, faster focus and quicker distance display

The Bushnell Tour V4 JOLT laser is the long-awaited replacement to the popular Tour V3 JOLT model, a favoured choice among amateur golfers up and down the country.

The new Tour V4 is 30 per cent smaller and lighter, making it fit perfectly in your hands and even your pocket. It also has a new Fast Focus system that allows you to adjust the focus with the same finger you use to fire the laser.

A change in the Rules of Golf, specifically rule 14-3 regarding artificial devices that came into effect from January 1 st 2016, means that slope lasers can now be used in competitions providing the function is disabled and there is a local rule in place allowing distance measuring devices (which most golf clubs in the UK have).

Bushnell-Tour-V4-laser

This means that golfers will be more encouraged to buy the Slope version of the Tour V4 JOLT (£315), distinguished by its red trim on the front of the unit, knowing they can disable the feature and use it legally in competitions. This is ideal for golfers that play lots of different courses, lots of competitive rounds that involve practice rounds, or hilly golf courses.

While the Tour V4 is certainly more compact, the 'Stabi-Grip' rough surfaces around the points at which it is in contact with your hand mean you don’t lose out on stability. It can be a little time consuming to turn the slope function on and off (it took us a few goes to master it) and the focus toggle is a little too stiff for our liking, but other than that the Tour V4 improves upon the Tour V3 and is certainly useable with just one finger.

Increasing the range of the JOLT feature will please lower handicappers that hit the ball a long way and want to know the exact distance to pins on approaches to par fives. I even managed to pick out a flag that was 390 yards away, very impressive!

As always, Bushnell hasn’t scrimped on the carry case, which has a premium look to it and clips easily to the bag to allow swift access. The battery meter is another reassuring feature, keeping you updated on when you need to buy a replacement.

Review: Bushnell Tour X Laser Rangefinder

This Laser Does Everything

If you were to build the best laser rangefinder you could, what features would it have?  It would be accurate, it would have some sort of pin locking technology, it would have option for slope/no slope, it would have crystal clear optics, it would fit perfectly in your hand, it would have optional display colors, and it would hit the ball the exact yardage it measures for you.  Ok, besides that last one, the other features would make for just about the perfect laser rangefinder.   Bushnell  put all those features into the Tour X Laser rangefinder.  This laser does everything.  (except hit the ball)

The  Bushnell  Tour X is their first laser rangefinder with a removable face-plate for both slope and non-slope ability for USGA approved usage.  While they aren’t the first to do something like this, it does get them up to speed with the best of the laser rangefinders.  It is really easy to install or uninstall.  The storage is on the bottom of the case in a little microfiber bag.  It can’t take more than 10 seconds to change out the face-plates.

Another new feature is the shape of the Tour X.  It really isn’t like any of their other models.  It has an ergonomic  squeeze point for vertical operation.  It is smaller than the Pro X7 and bigger than Z6 or V3.  The bigger size makes it stable in your hands but not big and awkward.  It seems like just about perfect for one hand operation.  It has rubber slip-resistant sections that keep it firmly in place while holding it.  I also like that it is mostly white for an easier reminder if you leave it on the tee-box or fairway after getting a yardage.

Another new feature is the ability to change the display color to either red or black.  Depending on the lighting and color-blindness one or the other works best for seeing the yardages displayed in the eye-piece.  While the picture below the black numbers comes out much clearer, I usually preferred to use it in the red setting.

On the course, this is pretty much the best laser you can buy.  It jolts when it hits the pin so you know that it is locked on, prism or not.  It is fast and accurate on every shot.  I got almost no “chatter” yardages from other objects behind or near the pin.  The slope calculations worked really well when I was playing with the red face-plate on.  It comes in handy for a friendly round, especially on a hilly course.  The black plate is certainly for the more serious round.  Everything is the same, except you get no additional slope information.

The case is nice to clip onto the side of your bag or because the  Bushnell  Tour X rangefinder is a good compact size, it fits really nicely in my Clicgear 3.5+ glovebox.  Like always the battery life is good.  I only have about 8 rounds in with this unit, but I expect like all laser rangefinders to not worry about the battery for about a year.  It is one of the main reasons I always go back to laser.

The  Bushnell  Tour X rangefinder is the ultimate laser rangefinder.   It’s speed, accuracy, ease of use, slope/no slope, red/black display along with a near perfect size and weight make it the best laser rangefinder you can buy.  This laser does everything. (expect hit the ball)

Bushnell Tour X Rangefinder Review

Published: 16 April 2015 Last updated: 25 October 2023

bushnell tour x laser golf rangefinder

At a glance

  • TG Rating 4 out of 5
  • Owner Rating Not yet rated

Really modern, competition legal setting

What we say...

According to the R&A, you can’t use distance measuring devices that factor in things like temperature, wind and slopes in competition.

So Bushnell’s new Tour X laser rangefinder finally gets around the problem by offering two viewing modes – via a gradient-measuring red faceplate and a tournament-legal black one.

“With Exchange Technology, golfers are able to use the same device in practice, gaining exact yardages plus slope compensated distances, while also being able to use the same device legally in comps – subject to local rules,” explains Bushnell’s Thomas Disch.

The Tour X offers accuracy of up to half-a-yard up to 125 yards. From 126 up to 1,000 yards it is accurate up to plus or minus a yard.

“Our patented Slope Technology works by instantly calculating the distance and slope angle between the player’s position and their target using a built-in inclinometer,” adds Disch. “Tour X then displays the degree of this angle, as well as the compensated yardage.”

Tech: Tour X uses two interchangeable faceplates. With the red plate attached, you can benefit from Bushnell’s Slope Technology, with gives an adjusted yardage with any change in elevation (but banned for competitions). When the black faceplate is attached that facility is disabled, so you can use it in comps if the committee allows. It also features Dual Display Technology (DDT), which lets you switch between a bright red or black display; a range of up to 1,300 yards; and JOLT Technology.

Looks: Really modern. The white body is framed by grippy panels top and bottom, and it's shaped to sit perfectly in your hand, with a large red button on top which can be used with a glove on. Toggling between the red and black numbers in the Dual Display is easy and useful, especially at dusk (red) or when you're looking into the sun (black).

Ease of use: It couldn’t be much easier. As soon as I'd popped the battery in it was ready to use. The plates are so simple to swap, the red one plugging into a type of USB socket to activate the slope rating. It takes seconds to pop one off and put the other on.

Performance: Hard to fault. Other devices I've had have struggled picking up targets against a messy background. Tour X never had that problem; PinSeeker Technology isolates the target and it works every time. You know when you’re locked on when you get that reassuring JOLT vibration. It takes no time at all to flash up a yardage.

Set-Up & Use

Slope design

For slope control, you can just replace the faceplate when turning it off and on. You can adjust brightness and switch units using it very natural and simple keys.

Accuracy & Performance

Bushnell tour X is known for its accuracy. The range finder has a very long-range of focus, and it is extremely accurate. Tour X utilizes Bushnell’s E.S.P.2 technology that makes it faster when processing and executing yardage within seconds. The range finder is capable of working anywhere from 5-1,300 yards and can locate a flag at a distance of 450 yards.

Dual-display

Another special feature is its dual-display technology. Tour X is able to change the display color from grey to orange just by the flip of a switch. The dual display capability has enabled the most useful to operate with it at any time of the day.

Slope adjustment

The slope adjustment is another great feature. Tour X has come with two plates, and one plate provides the directional laser for tournament play while the other is used for slope adjustment.

bushnell tour x jolt golf laser rangefinder

Tour X is well designed to be very portable and comfortable to handle. The rangefinder can comfortably fit the hands of every adult person while it is easy for use since you can operate with one hand.

Another interesting thing with laser range finder is its casing. It comes with two versions of casings all in premium quality. The casings are a zipper enclosure and an elastic band. So you can use both of them. You will find most people using it with its elastic bands during play since you can operate while it is enclosed; while letting its lenses out.

Tour X laser is Bushnell’s best range finder, and that is the reason why it comes at a relatively high price of $500 .

The value of its lenses among other killer features is worth its price. The individual features that come with this option cannot be found anywhere else, and that is why you won’t go wrong with this model.

Performance:

Bushnell tour X is the best when it comes to performance as compared to other range finders. Its accuracy is unquestionable-you can determine the yardage with an accuracy of +/-0.5, which is very close to the exact thing.

Ease of use:

Bushnell tour X is very simple when it comes to its way of use. You don’t need to be an expert so in using this range finder. The exchange technology makes it more convenient for flawless timing during tournaments. The pin seeker is set to vibrate when you are near to the target.

The design:

The rangefinder offers easy display toggling through its dual-display design. The user can use either of the display any time of the day when there is a lot of sunlight during the day or at the evening when there is limited light.

Its housing is built with panels that are grippy on top and its bottom to make it easy when handling, especially when holding with one hand. This also helps in making it comfortable when handling with gloves.

Most customers complain about the price of the Bushnell tour x. the price is around $500. You can find its competitors selling their products at less price than this, but looking closely, most of these products are worst when it comes to features and quality. Bushnell tour X is always recommended at its price since it is worth the price.

Final Thoughts

The Bushnell Tour X laser rangefinder is a very reliable option that will provide you with every feature you want. The rangefinder is perfect in terms of accurate distant measuring within a fraction of a second. The product is the top-rated among other Bushnell options while it is among the options that are positively reviewed by most users.

Normally, when a product is reviewed, we find varying opinions from different users based on the test of the product service. You might get it on the wrong side or get guided towards the right way based on the level of research you are ready to conduct before you acquire the product.

Good research on the review of the product requires you to go through various user comments on different features of the range finders. Ensure that you are keen on negatives while checking if they are repetitive from user to user; you will tell the common drawback from your analysis.

On the positive side, go through all positive reviews on the product features, and if most of the users are positively reviewing the product, then the positive side will overweigh its negatives.

According to my research on Bushnell tour X, the reviews are excellent, with minimal negatives. With that truth being said, I cannot question the performance of this model.

  • Unbelievably quick at giving distances.
  • I didn't think the jolt would be very beneficial but it is. With my old one I’d go back and forth between the flag and background to make sure I had the right number. With this, there is no need, even for my OCD’ness.
  • Red display is super easy to see. The black is fine in normal light.
  • Faceplate is very easy to change over.
  • Can't scan and continuously read distances like my old one. As soon as it reads a closer distance than the one it currently has it jolts and stops reading. Not a problem for flags but I struggled with long distance bunkers as my unsteady hands pointed at the ground well before the bunker.
  • The eyepiece has some coating on it that darkens the view - like wearing sunglasses. Good for really bright days but makes it harder than need be to see flags in overcast conditions. I thought at first there might be a protective film like you get on new phones but I can't see anything to peel off!
  • The case is a little fiddly and requires very small (or very dextrous) hands to get the device out one-handed. It’s also quite easy to move the focussing wheel when removing the device from the case.

Region3 said: Last week (after West Hill actually) I decided to buy myself a new laser rangefinder. There’s nothing particularly wrong with my old one, but it can struggle in rain and fog. I assumed this was normal as the beam would bounce of anything in between me and the target, but at West Hill I tried another player’s Bushnell and it was picking up distances through the rain when mine would not. After scouting Nikon and Bushnell’s websites for info and reading various online reviews I decided on the Bushnell Tour X. Now, I don’t need all the bells and whistles that the Tour X has, but they’re certainly not going to do me any harm and since I was treating myself I thought why not. I’ve now played 2 rounds with it over the weekend, and my thoughts and impressions so far are:- The Good Unbelievably quick at giving distances. I didn't think the jolt would be very beneficial but it is. With my old one I’d go back and forth between the flag and background to make sure I had the right number. With this, there is no need, even for my OCD’ness. Red display is super easy to see. The black is fine in normal light. Faceplate is very easy to change over. The Not So Good Can't scan and continuously read distances like my old one. As soon as it reads a closer distance than the one it currently has it jolts and stops reading. Not a problem for flags but I struggled with long distance bunkers as my unsteady hands pointed at the ground well before the bunker. The eyepiece has some coating on it that darkens the view - like wearing sunglasses. Good for really bright days but makes it harder than need be to see flags in overcast conditions. I thought at first there might be a protective film like you get on new phones but I can't see anything to peel off! The case is a little fiddly and requires very small (or very dextrous) hands to get the device out one-handed. It’s also quite easy to move the focussing wheel when removing the device from the case. Although it appears that I’ve written more bad than good that is far from the case. The bad points are merely niggles, and the good far outweighs them. Slope I had always wondered how useful (and accurate) the slope feature on rangefinders would be. For some reason I thought they might work yard for yard ie 5yds uphill means it plays 5yds longer. I was wrong. It also allows for the length of shot in its calculations. For example, 10yds uphill on a 180yd shot will have more of an effect on club selection than 10yds uphill on a 90yd shot, because the ball will be descending at a shallower angle on the longer shot. I can’t really judge how useful the slope is yet as my place isn’t hilly at all, and the one hole it could be useful on I forgot to take a reading from the usual approach spot. It did make adjustments of 2 or 3 yards on a few shots I thought were flat, but I’m not yet at the stage where 2 or 3 yards will make that much of a difference to my club/shot choice. Overall I’m very happy with it so far. It’s quite light but feels solid, fits in my hand very nicely and reads distances remarkably quickly. I look forward to halving my handicap in the coming months Click to expand...

I got one of these for my birthday. Have never had a rangefinder before but I am totally converted.... (Apart from getting a reading from the tree behind the pin at the 9th at West Hill and airmailing the green as a result!) The slope surprised me in that it generally seems to make less difference to the yardage than I would previously have imagined. My biggest fear is that I'll forget to change the faceplate in between a practice and competition round and get into trouble as a result!

Thanks for the review, its a lovely looking bit of kit! Quick questions: Do you get two numbers, one for flat out distance and one for slope altered difference? I have a cheap range finder that is cool but it is slow and and am constantly doing the same as you were, background, pin and so on.

Region3 said: As FD said, 2 distances. The top one is as normal ie non slope adjusted. In slightly smaller numbers underneath, it alternates every second or so between the angle it's detected and the slope adjusted yardage. Something that the manual mentions is that you are supposed to keep the device looking at the target for a second or so after you have your normal distance so it can do the maths for the adjusted yardage. I guess it doesn't continuously adjust for slope while the button is down and only does the calculation when the distance is final, so needs you to keep the device at the same angle. In practice it gave me the adjusted yardage before I could even think about moving it away. Click to expand...
MendieGK said: Which rangefinder did you have before? i struggled at west hill with my one constantly showing 11yards due to the rain etc! Click to expand...
Region3 said: A Nikon. I think it's called Coolshot, but it's the all black one from before the new funky blue & white ones. Mostly was either no reading or 11.5yds, but it did pick a few up. Click to expand...

It contains residential and administrative buildings, restaurants, cafes and shops. • Train Station. Build in 1955 in the style of late neoclassicism, Petrozavodsk vokzal is decorated with columns of the Corinthian order and a 17-meter spire. • Former children's clinic, also known as the “Kareldrev” trust building. Lenin (Round) Square

Constructed in 1775 in the tradition of Russian classicism, buildings on the Round Square are the oldest ones in the city: • “Governor's House”, now the National Museum. At various times, governors and vice-governors of the Olonets province lived and worked there. • Government building, now the Ministry of Culture. Public offices, the district court, and the apartment of the governor general were located here. The bronze lions at the entrance were cast at the Alexander Factory in 1858 in honour of the arrival of Emperor Alexander II. • Lenin monument. Erected in 1933 on the site of the monument to Peter I, the granite statue of the Soviet leader is dressed in a winter coat and holds a winter hat in his hand. • Memorial complex “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with the Eternal Flame”. Made of Shoksha red quartzite and gabbro-diabase, opened in 1969.

Karl Marx Avenue and Kirov (Cathedral) Square

The Cathedral Square of Petrozavodsk in the early XX century

Onega Lake embankment

Going down from Kirov Square to Lake Onega, one will found the monument to Peter the Great. Dedicated to the bicentenary of the Emperor’s birth, it was erected in 1873 on Round Square, where Lenin now stands. On the granite embankment of Lake Onega one can find gifts from the sister cities of Petrozavodsk, including unusual sculptural compositions made by modern architects from Duluth (USA), Varkaus (Finland), Umeå (Sweden), Mo and Rana (Norway), Neubrandenburg and Tübingen ( Germany), La Rochelle (France). Between the building of the Cosmos Petrozavodsk Hotel and the mouth of the Neglinka River a so-called Historical Quarter is located, where one can see several interesting wooden buildings of the 19th-20th centuries. A lazy perfectionist in the kitchen and on the road, petroskoi or petrozavodsk, capital of karelian republic.

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

My second trip to Petrozavodsk , the capital of Karelian Republic in the North of Russia, has proved once again my first impression of a very provincial and yet welcoming city. In fact this visit has been one of the most rewarding as far as my job goes. But of course there was a travel part to this journey which was almost completely left out during my first time in Petrozavodsk 2 years ago .

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

Petrozavodsk is of exactly the same age as St Petersburg and was founded by the same super-active person, tsar and then emperor Peter the Great. Actually,  Petrozavodsk is a shortened version of Petrovsky Zavod , the Factory of Peter, as there was this factory founded to make metal things for the Russian fleet.

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

People had populated the area long before the new settlement appeared on the shores of the Onega lake, well, in fact, thousands of years earlier, so the region has enough to show and tell about its indigenous people and their culture, the Karelians. The language is very close to the Finnish language and – if not widely spoken – it is still preserved in the region. Petrozavodsk is Petroskoi in Karelian and that’s what you read written on top of the Stalinist railway station building when you arrive from St Petersburg.

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

Karelia for me is all about forests and stones. It’s a pity in this time of the year you don’t see much when travelling with an overnight train. When we arrived in Petrozavodsk it was so early in the morning we had to wait at the station (which had free wifi and actually there’s wifi all over the city for free!) till it got less dark and we could go have breakfast on the 4th floor of an ex- mica factory (dating back to 1930 but now shut down) with a view over the old roofs of the city. We were the first customers but I must say that Na Kryshe (On the Roof) cafe proved to be ready with tasty buttermilk oladyi (pancakes) served with oblepikhovoye varenye ( sea buckthorn jam) and a pot of milk Oolong tea. And that was a very economical breakfast!

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

Out of all the cities I visited so far this autumn I think I liked the haunted Kaliningrad with its ever present past the most. Whereas Chelyabinsk left very negative feeling and it was not for nothing that I kept coughing each time I went outside there, Petrozavodsk left a rather positive impression on me. It’s a small very low rising (unless you visit one of the suburbs) provincial town with some preserved old houses and an embankment where you can catch a hydrofoil to get you to the famous Kizhi island which has become an open-air museum for wooden structures. We arrived too late in the year to get there but I hope I will see Kizhi soon. At least I don’t mind seeing Petrozavodsk in a better weather!

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

Petrozavodsk itself is an open-air museum for old houses, be it wooden barracks or Stalinist imposing buildings along the main arteries of the city. It used to be a very St Pete-like city, I mean the houses were really old, both built in stone and those in wood. Like this hospital building which can be seen from the Onega Lake embankment:

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

Well, the war swept away most of the old city and there came the 1950s when the new rationalizing plans which brought new buildings for the better future of the Soviet Petrozavodsk. And oh boy what houses!

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

This is the house where the central office of Post of Russia is (no postcards!). Actually sometimes the buildings housing Post of Russia are one of the best in the cities I’ve visited (like in Vologda). But then it rarely affect the quality and the swiftness of the service…

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

Another grand Stalinist house forming the ensemble of the central square:

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

With these Stalinist buildings you just have to remember to look up from time to time – to discover all those details and (decaying) balconies which I actually try to avoid these days 🙂

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

And then – in stark contrast – there is this type of houses – we saw several of them:

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

or these barracks – people still live there, mind you…

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

the same house from the other side – and with the wood for the long winter…

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

and this is the entrance to one of the wooden houses opposite those barracks

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

and how about this one?

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

the wall is just oh so decadent!

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

However the city has a number of 19th and early 20th century wooden houses all gathered together near Onega embankment that form a separate district of historical and architectural value. Take a walk along the Onega Lake embankment starting from the square in front of the Theatre and then turning left. But do not walk fast however windy the day might be!

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

The embankment is yet another open-air museum (and how does one fit in all this in such a small town?!) – this time of various successful and not that very successful sculptures and statues. The one from the beginning of the post called the Statue of Fishermen (a gift from Minnesota) looks really nice against the colourful sunset sky and the lake while the tall figure of Peter the Great (19th century) has actually been removed from its original place twice throughout the Soviet period. And guess who stands in Peter’s place now in the middle of the central square? You’ll find it out later in the post.

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

And with this small stone house begins the district full of old wooden houses, in one of which we entered to warm ourselves up a bit and from which we went out with some embroidered souvenirs. They also have some natural products like shampoo and soap, made without any preservatives and all that stuff.

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

This is the hospital church:

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

And this is one of the most expensive hotels in the city spoiling the view on the old town. ‘Spoiling’ because as I said the city has very small amount of high-rises in its historical center, so this weird construction can be seen from far away.

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

On the last day of our stay we left our hotel and went for a walk in the sun, heading towards the local history museum where we wanted to spend some quality time. It was sunny but rather frosty and we had quite a lot of time before the train back to St Pete – that was not an overnight but a rather fast Siemens train with comfortable seats which takes 5 hours.

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

When we came to the end of this wall we realized that was the Industrial Museum (which we skipped) occupying the old factory buildings. We thoroughly enjoyed this urban art on the walls!

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

So in the end we spent an unusual for an average visitor lot of time at the local history museum . Recommended by the way! There’s even a chance to listen to some Karelian folk songs and incantations or get a copy of Karelian recipes (will try some of them for sure!). Karelian cuisine is based on what the wild nature gives you and so some of the exhibits at the museum were dedicated to it.

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

And yep, here’s your Lenin right in the middle of Lenin Square (apparently), where Peter the Great used to stand until the 1930s came. And the Square itself has a very curious story to tell – it changed its name so many times I got lost when counting them. Well, they definitely embellished the look of the square whatever name you call it in the recent years. But as soon as you go into the back yard of the museum, you find yourself staring at this wrack of the “state-preserved” building:

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

The museum will also tell you about the brief period of the Finnish occupation of the city (1941-44) when the same Square which used to be Round Square (:) was renamed into Administrative Square. And oh, remember those Karelian forests that go on and on and on? Well, with the forests you have a strong culture of gathering or foraging and that means you have all the tools for berry picking or hunting for mushrooms 🙂 Here’s what you can see at display at the museum:

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

This thingy with spikes is to pick berries in a fast and efficient way. Everything made from wood and bark of the trees… Perfect! Just as this proto-rucksack for carrying all the treasure the forests can give:

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

After that we just could not have missed the local food! So we headed to the same restaurant opposite one of the best known symbols of Petrozavodsk (hotel Severnaya where I stayed last time – definitely NOT recommended, if only to see the inside of that super-red Stalinist buildings with white columns) where I ate 2 years ago . The restaurant is called Karelskaya Gornitsa and is although quite pricey and tourist-oriented is a nice place to imagine yourself travelling back in time.

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

But you see, last time we went to the Finnish part of the restaurant and this time we entered the Karelian part, which I found out when we were already leaving the place. All the time we were there I was wondering why I cannot recognize the place at all =) And then they explained to me there are two entrances leading to two parts of the restaurant. So we’ve made a better choice this time entering the Karelian cuisine part!

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

There I sampled thew most fluffy and almost yogurt-like thing called tolokno (oat flour which contains all the bran usually removed when making the regular flour) mixed with blueberries (hence the colour) and also a rye blin (pancake) filled with millet. This type of rye or barley pancake is called skantsy or sulchiny and is traditionally filled with porridge (they are either baked or fried, sweet or sour) . We drank cowberry mors (juice) which is almost always the best choice when it comes to traditional non-alcoholic drinks in Russia.

For some Karelian recipes , see my post on kalitka , traditional Karelian rye boat-like pie which is also enjoyed in Finland and in the North of Russia.

Petroskoi or Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

So, to wrap up Petrozavodsk, here are my checklist points:

  • decent postcards – failed
  • post office – found
  • market – failed
  • local history museum – done
  • dairy products and baked stuff – sampled
  • local specialit é s – as far as the vegetarian stuff is concerned – tasty! And my Mom said that her fried fish and rich mushroom soup were really good!
  • old town – seen and admired

Here you can hear the official hymn of the Republic of Karelia (actually a song from 1963). It was played on the train when we were leaving Petrozavodsk without unfortunately seeing all the beauty of the Karelian woods and lakes…

By the way, I am going to the dark-dark Arkhangelsk in two weeks! Hope this time I will get hold of the authentic sochni of Arkhangelsk…
