Each of our 16 rooms are unique with tasteful furnishings and boasting comfortable en-suite facilities, all of which are combined to ensure a memorable stay. While most visitors come to experience the delights of the African bushveld on horseback, on a game drive or perhaps out on an early morning bush walk, many visitors also enjoy the wonderful experience of canoeing in the pristine waters of Chengeta. When it is time to relax, do some sun lounging by the swimming pools or simply enjoy a glass of wine on the veranda.

CHENGETA LODGE (Selous) - Lodge Reviews & Photos - Tripadvisor

HA-Logo-Landscape

Bryony Scrooby

Chengeta safari lodge.

  • Accommodation , Selous , Zimbabwe

Chengeta Safari Lodge lies in the midst of a 13,000-acre private game reserve, near the small town of Selous .  It is approximately 1.5 hour’s drive from Harare and Harare International Airport, which means access is a quick road transfer from the capital city, on tarred roads, with the last few kilometers once you enter the boundary fence on well maintained dirt roads.  ( GPS (GOOGLE MAPS) -18.124996, 30.426567 ).

The lodge is built incorporating the natural indigenous trees into and around the buildings, with beautiful manicured lawns flowing throughout the lodge grounds.  This encourages a wide variety of bird life, with many species spotted from the comfort of the main entertainment area, which overlooks a multi-level swimming pool.  All the buildings are thatched, keeping them nice and cool during the summer months and insulated in winter.  The dining area and bar are adjacent to one another, with a wonderful fireplace built into the TV Trophy room for those wanting to stay indoors and cuddle up with a nice warm drink.  There is also a curio shop near reception for guests convenience, selling local souvenirs.

chengeta safari lodge day trip

There are 17 rooms in total, comprising of:

  • 1 x Family room
  • 16 x Standard double/twin rooms

All the rooms have ceiling fans, mosquito nets, mini bars, lock box and complimentary tea and coffee facilities.

Chengeta Lodge is linked to the national grid, so that appliances like hair dryers and electric shavers may be used, so long as there isn’t a power cut.  If the power does go out, there is a back-up generator able to supply the lodge.  The hot water is heated by a wood burning Rhodesian Boiler.  Cell phone signal is good, and there is Wi-Fi available throughout the premises.

There are various activities on offer at Chengeta, comprising of:

  • Horse riding;
  • Canoeing; (you will be transferred to Pamuzinda for this activity)
  • Game drives;
  • Game walks;
  • Chengeta school tour.

Chengeta Safari Lodge is a great place to get away from the fast pace of city life for a chilled weekend with family and friends alike.

Hotels Details

Chengeta safari lodge.

chengeta safari lodge day trip

Chengeta Safari Lodge is situated at the foot of a granite kopje amidst indigenous trees and a tropical landscaped garden with wildlife roaming through the gardens, guests can enjoy a memorable and restful stay with us. This beautiful well established 16 roomed hideaway is found in the midst of a 7,500 acre wildlife paradise with large concentrations of plains game as well as Buffalo, Lion and domesticated Elephant.

The lodge has a two-tiered thatched dining room overlooking the gardens and two swimming pools, and a pool bar that is open from 9am until dinner finishes. Thereafter, most guests retire to the trophy lounge area and main bar. There is a lapa fire pit area for that social "round the fireside" chat about the day’s events as well as a separate TV lounge with full DSTV selection.

Chengeta is more than just a name. It defines our approach to hospitality and we offer all of our valued guests a warm African welcome. Whether you are looking for a short safari holiday packed with an endless array of adventure, a rejuvenating weekend getaway or the perfect unique venue for your special event, we look forward to taking care of everything for you.

Chengeta has 16 rooms in total; 7 double-bedded and 9 twin-bedded, all of which are en suite. 3 of the doubles and 4 of the twins have both bath and shower, whilst the rest have showers only.

Twin-bedded Room

Each room is built of stone under thatch, and each has its’ own verandah overlooking the gardens.

Double Room

This beautiful well established 16 roomed hideaway is found in the midst of a 7,500 acre wildlife paradise with large concentrations of plains game as well as Buffalo, Lion and domesticated Elephant.

Things to do at Chengeta Safari Lodge

A large range of activities within the reserves are available.

Canoeing

Canoeing can be experienced on both the Serui within Pamuzinda or the Chimbo river at Chengeta as well as a large dam on the outskirts of the Chengeta reserve. We also have a pontoon boat powered by a silent battery driven bass motor for a more sedate cruise with friends along the Serui within Pamuzinda.

For those looking to get some exercise whilst on vacation, early morning or evening bush walks can be arranged with any one of our experienced guides.

Game drives

Game drives in open game drive vehicles are generally taken both morning and evening and a prearranged picnic lunch out in the bush can be arranged. For those staying with us for more than 1 day, drives can be taken within both reserves. Night drives are also available to view the nocturnal animals and birds of the southern African bush, these normally start after dinner and you are generally out for an hour.

Clay Pigeon

And for those of you who have never tried it before, clay pigeon shooting can be exhilarating in the company of an experienced shooter.  Shots can be taken at fast-moving clays from up to 6 traps, with the activity being charged according to the number of shots (minimum 10 shots per gun, and minimum of four participants).  Due to the manpower involved, clay pigeon shooting must be booked 24 hours in advance.

Elephant rides and Interactions

Pamuzinda also host elephant rides and interactions, although guests staying at Chengeta are more than welcome to take part: for those new to this, it is a truly magical and moving experience.  The adults, Boxer and Shorty, are now in their early 30’s, and were rescued as calves from the culls in the ‘80s; they have been together ever since.

Wildlife at Chengeta Safari Lodge

Chengeta and Pamuzinda’s two reserves boast over 45 mammal species, ranging from four of the Big Five – soon to be all five – to plains game, including giraffe, tsessebe, zebra, eland and wildebeest, through to the smaller game such as duiker, oribi, vervet monkeys and short-clawed otters.  There are good concentrations of nocturnal species as well, such as civets, porcupines, aardvarks, and the very elusive aardwolf – or “maanhaar jackal”, related to the hyena – which also eats termites like the aardvark.

Zimbabwe boasts a spectacular array of birdlife, and we are proud to say that between the two parks, we are home to approximately 350 species of bird, from the tiny southern masked weaver through to the larger species; the crowned eagle and the African fish eagle are resident and breeding, as is the rarer African finfoot.  It is a popular destination with the Zimbabwe and International Birdlife members.

Fergus Scholes . Photography by Carl van der Linde

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

The outstretched arm of our tracker gestures towards some treetops a few hundred yards away: his ability to spot the seemingly invisible is astounding. Luke, our guide, cuts the engine of the Land Cruiser and turns around: “Can you see? Just through that clearing to the left.”

Following his direction through my binoculars, I pick out the majestic-looking bird: dark brown head with tufted crown, white breast and piercing yellow eyes. Luke fills me in: “Sometimes nicknamed the ‘leopard of the air’, it’s a martial eagle, with a wingspan of up to 2.5m, one of the world’s largest birds of prey, and the largest in Africa.” This apex predator remains on its perch for a precious few minutes, then suddenly takes flight and disappears into the distance.

A pair of little bee-eaters

I’ve come to andBeyond’s Phinda Mountain Lodge in eastern South Africa on a birdwatching safari. The lodge sits in an elevated position with views across Phinda Private Game Reserve ’s 73,800 acres; its seven ecosystems offer an unusually varied habitat, from lush greenery to open savannah. The foothills of the low‑lying Lebombo mountains stretch 500 miles north into Mozambique, and the azure waters of the Indian Ocean lie just 20 miles east.

Most guests are here for the big game, but an impressive 436 bird species also makes the reserve a popular birding destination, so andBeyond’s specialist itinerary allows me to indulge a lifelong hobby.

Two great egrets and a grey heron perch in a tree above the Mvubu dam

Much of our first morning is hijacked by my enthusiasm to identify every bird we see, which means we get no further than 200 yards from the lodge in the first hour. But in the afternoon, we head directly to the dry sand forest, which is home to unusual endemic species.

A bright colour flashes by before perching on a small branch

Surrounded by an elephant exclusion fence, we leave the vehicle and set out on foot – as strict protocol dictates, our guide leads from the front with a high-calibre rifle in hand. Orchids and lichen grow in profusion, and some of the Lebombo wattle trees are believed to date back over 1,000 years. The dense vegetation makes getting a good view of the birds more challenging, but we still spot plenty, including African green pigeons, the paradise flycatcher with its unmistakably long tail feathers, and the crested barbet. Then we’re treated to the endemic pink-throated twinspot, a distinctive waxbill with a bright head and black chest with white spots. Extant in just a handful of other locations nearby, this is a favourite for many visiting birders.

The author uses the Swarovski Optik AX Visio binoculars with a Zulu tracker

My bird knowledge – largely limited to the British Isles – is of little help here in South Africa, so my guide has been invaluable. However, I’ve also been given access to the world’s first AI-supported binoculars, released this year, which enable me to make positive IDs myself. The Swarovski Optik AX Visio (£3,820) combines high-end optics (10x32) with bird identification software. You get the desired bird in your sights, and at the press of a button a suggested species appears on the heads-up display. Behind the scenes, the binoculars are cross-checking the image and GPS coordinates against Merlin Bird ID’s extensive database of more than 8,000 bird species (Merlin’s app is divided up into groups, allowing you to download extra information on the species found in a given region; I installed the South Africa pack of 712 birds.)

A gulp of reed cormorants, egrets and African darters roost above the waters of the Mvubu dam

Making our way in the vehicle once again, we come across zebra with red-billed oxpeckers picking ticks and parasites from their backs. A little further on, we glimpse a southern fiscal; a black-and-white shrike that also goes by the name of butcher bird due to its habit of impaling its prey on acacia thorns for later consumption. Then, as we pass a small water source, a bright colour flashes by before perching on a small branch; it’s a malachite kingfisher. Meanwhile, a three-banded plover moves busily along the water’s edge, foraging for insects. Luke then spots its nest, which is little more than a shallow depression on the beach containing two small grey mottled eggs.

Over the course of three days, the binoculars help me correctly identify 68 species of bird. Although there are a few, around 30, with which the technology struggled. Sometimes the bird is too far away, or it is obscured by twigs, or the image was blurred – but more often than not, with a good, clear view, the binoculars do an impressive job of identification. Moreover, because a photo is saved with each press of the button, I have a comprehensive photographic diary for later scrutiny.

A flock of white-faced whistling ducks

On my last day, as the sun drops low on the horizon, we stop at a clearing next to the waters of the Mvubu dam, which makes a sublime setting for sundowners. A handful of blue-cheeked bee-eaters flutter above the still waters, a flock of white-faced whistling ducks complete their final flyby, and the nearby hippos quieten their grunting for the night. Biltong and drinks polished off, we hop back in the vehicle and make our way under a starry night sky. Sitting back, I reflect on my first birding safari experience – spotting more than 100 bird species, taking in the big five along the way and myriad other wildlife, it’s been as rewarding a trip as I could have hoped for.

Fergus Scholes travelled as a guest of andBeyond , on an abbreviated version of its nine-night Beyond Average Birding in South Africa experience, which costs from £9,200pp sharing. Includes internal flights, dedicated safari vehicle and specialist birding guide, accommodation, laundry, meals and drinks, andbeyond.com. Guests will be able to book a pair of Swarovski Optik AX Visio binoculars from July, POA
