Tupiza to Uyuni Tour - Sunrise at the Bolivian Salt Flats

Uyuni Salt Flats & San Pedro de Atacama 3-Day Tour

Isla Incahuasi, Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia-6

How does a Salar de Uyuni and the Atacama Desert tour all in one go sound? This is a 3-day tour that ticks all the boxes, from exploring Salar de Uyuni to the emerald green Laguna Verde .

The first half of the journey is a Bolivian whirlwind as you explore Colchani and Salar de Uyuni, ending off at Ajenchi Town. Soak up Bolivia’s industrial past at the Train Cemetery and admire a sunset producing a myriad of colours reflecting off the pure-white salt flats of Uyuni.

How about popping over to the flamingo-filled waters of Cañapa Laguna? Perhaps you want to see the unique tree-like rock formations in the Siloli Desert? Whatever the case, you’ll discover over 20 of Bolivia and the Atacama Desert’s top attractions in three days.

You should note that the tour excludes Isla Incahuasi and the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve entry fees.

Piedra Rojas, Altiplanic Lagoons & Solar Full-Day Tour

This Atacama Desert day tour is brimming with flora, fauna, and picturesque lakes. Start your journey with a delectable breakfast as you overlook the sulphur-lined Miscanti lagoon. Volcanoes surround Laguna Miscanti y Miñiques, creating a colossal atmosphere.

Next up, the lake of Piedro Rojas Salars offers an unimaginable cacophony of colours due to the variety of minerals within the water. It can freeze over in winter, which makes a cool contrast.

Visit Piedro Rojas in winter, as the lake’s lower water levels make the colours even more vivid.

And if that’s not enough, you’ll also pop past Chile’s largest salt lake, Salar de Atacama. If flamingo spotting is on your bucket list, you can definitely tick it off here, as Laguna Chaxa is home to three unique species.

San Pedro de Atacama Etno-Astronomical Tour

Stargazing Milky Way, Atacama Desert, Chile-

No Atacama experience is complete without a night gazing into the starry sky above . So, get the most out of the Atacanemo sky on this astronomical tour .

Start off by getting a deeper scientific understanding of the universe. Get ready to understand the cosmos and how to differentiate a planet from a star. And don’t worry, you’re not just blindly looking up. There are telescopes to help guide you.

Visit between April and September for the best stargazing conditions.

Science isn’t the only perspective you’ll learn more about, and your tour guide will also explain the ancient inhabitants’ ways of seeing the stars.

Valle de la Luna Sunset Tour

Valle de la Luna

There’s only one thing that beats seeing Valle de la Luna, and that’s seeing this magical landscape at sunset.

This Moon Valley tour allows you to explore a land where the wind carves the Martian-like landscape into ethereal formations.

Watch the Grand Dunes ripple in the wind and gaze at Las Tres Maria’s as the sun casts them in a golden glow. I’d usually recommend visiting Valle de la Luna at sunrise (to avoid the sunset crowds). But this is a private tour and your guide will take you to a secret spot that not many people know.

Atacama Desert Tour: 3-Day Special Activity Combo

Salar de Quisquiro

Pack four of Atacama’s top tourist attractions into a 3-day experience like no other. Each tour departs from San Pedro de Atacama daily, so accommodation isn’t included, but transportation is.

From a geyser that erupts every six minutes to the biggest fumaroles in the Northern Geyser field, El Tatio is a bubbling world of sulphur awaiting discovery.

Then there’s the expansive fields of white salt flats in the High Altiplano. Some top ones you’ll visit include Salar de Pujsa, with its wildlife-filled wetland and the peaceful lakeside of Salar de Quisquiro.

And the opportunities don’t end there, as you’ll visit the salt mountain range of Vallecito and the hidden lagoons of Baltinache . What more could you ask for?

The Perfect Three-Day Atacama Itinerary

Hidden Lagoons of Baltinache Tour

Julianna Barnaby, Cejar Lagoon, Atacama Desert, Chile

You’ve probably seen those epic videos of someone walking into the turquoise waters of a small lagoon as the sky offers a tapestry of colour. Do you wonder where on earth you can find these picturesque lagoons?

Wander no more because this Baltinache tour will take you to seven remote lagoons every Instagram model tries to photograph. Although the tour excludes entry to the lagoons ($11.85 cash), it does include transportation and a guide who’ll make the experience truly unique.

Besides, who doesn’t want the chance to float in like a cork in a crystal-clear lagoon with white sand surrounding you?

Guided Buggy Tour Through the Atacama Desert

Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia

If you’re an adrenaline seeker looking to take on the Atacama’s rugged terrain, then this buggy tour is the one. Be it sand, mountains, or rivers. Nothing will stop your 4×4 vehicle in this seemingly never-ending landscape.

Want to pair a little adventure with some cultural significance? Your buggy tour will stop at two archaeological sites — you can try, but your GPS won’t find these hidden destinations.

All-in-all, you’ll traverse 31 miles of towering sand dunes, steep mountain roads (if you can call them roads), and trickling riverbeds.

San Pedro de Atacama Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride

Atacama

Start your day early with unprecedented views of the Atacama Desert from above on this sunrise hot air balloon ride .

Watching the reddish glow of the sun begin to peak from behind the Licancabur Volcano is a sight few get to enjoy. And it’s a hundred times better when you’re 1,000 feet in the sky.

Your chariot of the sky (humour me) rises between the Andean Mountains and Domeyco Cordillera. As the sun kisses the ground below with rays of light, you’ll see it all, from Death Valley and Salt Mountain Range to the Atacama Lagoon and Moon Valley.

And just before you think the start of the day couldn’t get any better, it does. After landing, you’ll feast on a fresh medley of local cuisine. It’s sure to be the best breakfast you’ll have in Chile.

Geysers del Tatio Half-Day Tour From San Pedro de Atacama

Sunrise El Tatio Geysers, Atacama Desert, Chile

Get ready to see the natural fireworks that Rodolfo poignantly calls the El Tatio Geysers at sunrise. This half-day tour offers you a short but sweet opportunity to admire the glistening minerals in the bubbling and steaming waters of El Tatio’s fumaroles.

The tour starts with a sunrise hike around the northern geyser fields. The bouts of steam and twinkling minerals throughout the walk are sure to knock you out of your early-morning drowsiness. After a generous breakfast, the second hike of the day takes you to the traditional village of Machuca.

This old Andean village still builds its homes (of which there are only 20) using traditional techniques. In other words, you’ll also learn about the communities that still live within this harsh landscape of El Tatio.

Chile’s Atacama Desert Tour With Canyoning & Trekking

Julianna-Barnaby-Valle-de-Luna-Atacama-Desert-Chile.jpg

Are you looking to build up a sweat and test your limits? Then, one of the best Atacama tours for you has to be this canyoning experience .

Get ready to descend a towering cliff face with a raging waterfall alongside you. I know it sounds pretty dangerous, but trust me, it’s sure to get your adrenaline pumping. You’ll get to do four rappels throughout the day. And don’t worry. A qualified guide will help you every step of the way.

You’ll take turns climbing up to the top of the canyon and rappelling back down. So, in your off time, you can rest on the sandy banks or dip in the refreshing — albeit cold — river.

Atacama Red Rocks & Altiplano Lagoons Day Trip

South America Travel Itinerary - Dont forget the Atacama Desert

Book this Altiplano day trip to visit the Tropic of Capricorn and venture into the red-laden landscape of the Aguas Calientes Salt Flat. You’ll enjoy an hour-and-a-half walk past the iconic Piedras Roja.

During the trip, you might spot the rainbow of colourful minerals cascading down Volcano Capur. But a guarantee is a visit to the most iconic lakes in the area, including Chaxa, Miscanti, and Miñiques.

On the way back from the Piedra Rojas, you’ll stop by Socaire village. Here, you can snap some photos of the 700-year-old and the sun setting over the Incan terrace fields of the village.

Atacama Desert Astrophotography Tour

Stargazing Milky Way

Atacama Desert stargazing is always on the agenda, especially when you consider it’s a region at the forefront of astronomical research. With locations like ALMA and Paranal, taking an Atacama Desert observatory tour only makes sense.

This astrophotography tour is relatively new on the block, but it’s the perfect way to admire the night sky and snap some memorabilia simultaneously. From visiting the ACT Observatory to sipping refreshing aperitivo, it’s a memory that will last a lifetime.

And you’ll take two professional photos home. Could you ask for much more?

Atacama Fat Biking Tour

Drone Shots, High Altiplano, Atacama Desert, Chile

While everyone is heading to the usual tourist attractions, how about a guided bike ride through the Atacaman landscape? You won’t see the bubbling geysers at El Tatio or the calming lakes of the higher Atacama Basin, but at least you’ll be able to experience the land at your own speed.

The tour departs by car from Iquique in the afternoon and arrives in the middle of the desert just before sunset. This provides the perfect weather for the meandering journey through the region’s dunes.

The tour doesn’t include food, which isn’t ideal, but as far as ways to explore the Atacama go, it’s one of the best.

Multi-Day Tour in San Pedro de Atacama

Sunset-Laguna-Tebinquinche-Atacama-Desert-Chile

If you want to enjoy all the best things in the Atacama Desert without a worry in the world, then this multi-day tour is for you. The adventure spreads across four days for your convenience.

You can entice your inner explorer with guided tours to Valle de la Luna, Rainbow Valley, Atacama Salt Flat, Piedras Rojas, the Altiplanic lagoons, and El Tatio Geysers. And to put the cherry on top, you’ll also embark on an astronomic tour at Ayllu de Cucuter.

You’ll also enjoy all your meals from the tour agency, including all the park entrance fees.

Salar de Uyuni & Altiplano Cordillera Traveller Tour

Salar de Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia

If you cross the border to Bolivia and want a truly exceptional experience, I highly recommend booking this Cordillera Traveller tour . My first day on the tour was a bit of a mix-up, as the booking office made a mistake, but my guide, Walter, was excellent.

The tour focuses on the Altiplano region, which happens to be the widest point of the Andean Mountains. One of the highlights of the tour has to be the visits to the pre-Columbian cities like Chirp.

These cities encapsulate just how powerful and significant the Incan Empire was. There are even Incan ruins at Licancabur Volcano, which you might visit if you choose it as a part of your tour package.

Practical Tips for Exploring the Atacama Desert Tours

  • Valle de la Luna gets extremely busy. If you’re looking for a free-to-enter, quieter destination, consider Ckamur Valley.
  • If you want an all-inclusive resort that includes tours of the Atacama Desert, consider booking a stay at Nayara Alto Atacama .
  • Not all the tours depart from San Pedro de Atacama or include hotel pick-up. Make sure you read the tour description fully before booking.

Description.

A dramatic journey across the Andes to the driest desert in the world, the Atacama in northern Chile.

This trip combines with the colourful canyon of the Quebrada de Humahuaca and (if you're doing a round trip from Salta) with the Quebrada del Toro.

There's spectacular scenery around every corner: mountains and volcanoes, flamingoes and vicuña: and the Atacama is ideal for desert night stargazing.

Click here to view map route.

We can start or finish the trip in Salta or San Pedro: or do a round trip from either location.

Salta or San Pedro de Atacama.

Why take this tour?

If starting from Salta, we head north along the old mountain road to San Salvador de Jujuy, and up into the stunning multi-coloured Quebrada de Humahuaca. We recommend a couple of nights here to see all the highlights, including a pre-Inca fort at Tilcara, numerous old colonial churches, and a Spanish fort now converted into a museum dedicated to the War of Independence. And of course, there’s the famous Seven Coloured Hill in Purmamarca which we’ll see in its best (morning) light, climbing up to a superb viewpoint which takes us away from the crowds.

From Purmamarca, the road winds up to a peak of 4,200m: a spectacular ascent of the outer Eastern range of the Andes, before descending to the Salinas Grandes salt flats. After a stop for the obligatory reality-defying photos, we press on to the high altitude town of Susques (3,615m), home to the second oldest church in Argentina, a simple adobe structure dating from 1598.

The following day, we head west through the panoramic landscape of the Olaroz and Cauchari salt flats to the Paso de Jama on the Chilean frontier. After crossing the border, we reach the Salar de Tala with its blue-black lagoon, and the giant volcanic ignimbrite blocks in the Reserva Natural de los Flamencos, known as the Monjes de Pacana or Moai of Tara because of their similarity to the famous standing stones of Easter Island. Finally, a breath-taking descent into San Pedro de Atacama, jealously guarded by the majestic volcano of Licancabur.

Heading back to Salta again after your Atacama desert tours, we take the slow road south past Lascar volcano and explore the high-altitude Altiplano lagoons of Miscanti and Miniques, enjoying some fantastic views of the Salar de Atacama as we climb the Andes mountain range.

This lesser trod route via the Paso de Sico also takes in the stunning Salar of Talar and Laguna Tuyajto. Back on the Argentine side, we will spend the night in the Puna town of San Antonio de los Cobres (3,770m) and visit the famous viaduct of La Polvorilla, where the Train to the Clouds finishes its journey.

We return to Salta through the colourful and panoramic landscape of the Quebrada del Toro, taking in the pre-Inca ruins of Tastil along the way. If you’ve still got the energy, we can also hike a little-explored section of Argentina's Inca trail.

Our seven day itinerary allows for two full days enjoying the best of San Pedro de Atacama tours, but you can add on as many days there as you like and we'll be ready to bring you back to Salta or organise your onward journey.

chile atacama desert tour

Salares of Uyuni, Bolivia

The Bolivia salt flats are one of the true wonders of the natural world, the biggest in the world, and visible from space.

Experience an unforgettable tour of the Salar de Uyuni, where the lack of artificial light means there is always a breath-taking night sky.

This trip also includes an excursion through the multi-coloured Quebrada de Humahuaca, and can be combined with the Chilean Atacama desert.

Bolivia’s high altitude wine

Allow us to introduce you to one of the world’s lesser known wine regions: Tarija in Bolivia. With vineyards at 1,850m, this is one of the highest altitude wine regions in the world.

The quality of wine, particularly its trademark Tannat red variety, has developed hugely over the last 15 years, while its traditional singani spirit distilled from white Muscat of Alexandria grapes is also excellent.

Join us for a unique and personalised experience in one of the emerging wine regions in the world.

This trip can be combined with hiking in Calilegua or a longer tour also incorporating the new wine region of Jujuy province, Fourteen Colours and Cloud Forest .

What to See on an Atacama Desert Tour?

Outside of the North and South Poles, the Atacama Desert is the driest in the world. Departing from the desert town of San Pedro de Atacama (a small city of little adobe houses, unpaved streets and cozy restaurants), vast salt flats, active geysers and intense blue lagoons are waiting for travelers.

Perhaps the most amazing attraction on the desert tour can be seen at night. Given the desert’s remote location and the lack of artificial light, this is one of the most incredible places for stargazing. With its crystal-clear skies, no light pollution and 300-plus cloud free days, it is no surprise why San Pedro de Atacama is an absolute must-visit place for stargazing. Don’t miss out on any of these tours to the Atacama desert.

Since colonial times, Santiago, founded in 1541 by the Spanish adventurer Pedro de Valdivia, has served as Chile’s capital. It’s located in the Central Valley and it features an amazing mixture of art deco and neo-gothic architecture with fantastic views of the Andes Mountain Range. Some of the attractions of Santiago are art collections of pre-Columbian and contemporary art, local markets, and beautiful parks like Cerro Santa Lucía.

Northern Argentina

Northern Argentina is known as a region of contrasts since it features historic plazas, red mountains, and green oases. Indigenous culture may still be found in the traditions and folklore of this region, which was once part of the Inca Kingdom. Salta is the starting point for exploring Northern Argentina. Visit the Calchaquíes Valley and the city of Cafayate, the hometown of Torrontés wine. Take some days to explore the province of Jujuy, located at north of Salta, which features the Humahuca Gorge, declared World Heritage by UNESCO, and the Great Salt Flats,

Uyuni Salt Flats

Located in Bolivia, Uyuni Salt Flats are considered one of the most extreme in South America. Stretching more than 4,050 square miles of the Altiplano, it is the world’s largest salt flat, left behind by prehistoric lakes that evaporated long ago. Visiting Uyuni is different from anything you might have experienced before. The biggest Salt Flats in South America offer wide wildlife experiences that include pink flamingos living in the highest lake on Earth and guanacos herding in a backdrop of colossal volcanos.

Torres del Paine

Established in 1959, Torres del Paine National Park features Lakes, glaciers, and hiking paths in its 227.298 hectares of land. Paine means “blue” in the local Tehuelche language, while Torres means “towers.” Its first inhabitants, the Tehuelches, were a native community of skilled hunters that only survives today in Argentina. Explore the “W” trek, Patagonia’s most famous hiking route, and live a multi-day experience in the wild. The “Torres del Paine” name refers to the three distinctive granite peaks of the Paine Mountain Range that soar more than 6,500 feet (nearly 2,000 meters) into the sky.

Working with Say Hueque was great.

Everyone at the company was responsive and thoughtful, even when I sent that "emergency" message they solved my problem very fast . When I'm traveling in a foreign country, it's important to me to know that there's someone I can contact that will help me figure things out. I appreciated Say Hueque's service.

Thank you again for all of the help in planning, specially Sol and Andrea.

We had a wonderful time in the desert! If I ever plan to go to Argentina or Chile in the future, I'll be sure to contact you.

Our vacation was fantastic. Everything was well prepared. Excellent communication with the organizer; my emails were nearly immediately responded to. The accommodations were as promised, with a few additions. In hotels/hostels, there was information on our departures/excursions waiting for us. The transportation was on time. We had ample time for ourselves and were free to use it anyway we saw fit. I have nothing negative to say. I'd like to go on this vacation again, even though I only have positive recollections! Already missing the sun, rain, people, and scenery.

Experience these and so many more otherworld outdoor excursions while indulging yourself in all the pleasures of Atacama’s atmospheric lodges. The possibilities are unlimited.

Is it safe to visit the Atacama?

The quaint desert village San Pedro de Atacama serves as the gateway to the desert’s main attractions. Fortunately, this laid-back little tourist town is known for having virtually no violent crime, though an occasional bicycle theft occurs every now and then.

While the desert itself harbors no major endemic hazards such as lethal diseases or poisonous animals, care should be taken when hiking, cycling, visiting volcanic geysers, or participating in any other outdoor activities; keep in mind that the Atacama is somewhat remote and possesses only a single small medical facility.

This points to the fact that the most significant safety concerns in the Atacama are those related to staying healthy, particularly with regard to AMS (acute mountain sickness), alleviated with locally available infusions. In addition, the desert poses the threat of potentially dangerous levels of UV rays, easily addressed with sunblock, sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats, and long sleeves.

Things to do in Atacama

The Atacama Desert in Chile offers a unique and breathtaking landscape with a variety of activities to enjoy. Here are some things you can do while visiting the Atacama Desert:

Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) : Explore this lunar-like landscape with its salt formations, sand dunes, and unique rock formations. Sunset tours are particularly popular for the stunning views.

El Tatio Geysers : Visit one of the highest geyser fields in the world. Watching the sunrise over the geysers is a spectacular experience.

Stargazing : The Atacama Desert is renowned for its clear skies and excellent conditions for stargazing. There are several observatories and tours available for experiencing the night sky.

Laguna Cejar : Float in the saltwater lagoon, similar to the Dead Sea experience. The high salt concentration makes it easy to float and offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

Salar de Atacama : Visit the largest salt flat in Chile, where you can see flamingos and other wildlife in their natural habitat.

Tatio Salt Flats : Explore the vast salt flats and enjoy the unique scenery. The flat terrain and reflective surfaces make for great photo opportunities.

Atacama Salt Lake : Visit this picturesque lake surrounded by volcanoes. It’s a great spot for birdwatching and enjoying the tranquil scenery.

Trekking and Hiking : There are numerous trekking routes in the Atacama Desert, ranging from easy walks to more challenging hikes. Explore canyons, valleys, and high-altitude lakes.

San Pedro de Atacama : Explore the charming town of San Pedro de Atacama, which serves as a hub for exploring the surrounding desert. Visit the church, browse local artisan markets, and enjoy delicious Chilean cuisine.

Biking and Sandboarding : Rent a bike or go sandboarding on the dunes for an adrenaline-filled adventure.

Flamingo Watching : Visit the various lagoons in the area to spot different species of flamingos, including the Andean flamingo, Chilean flamingo, and James’s flamingo.

Visit the Atacama Salt Flats and Chaxa Lagoon : These areas offer stunning landscapes and great opportunities for photography, especially during sunrise and sunset.

Remember to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen, as the desert sun can be intense. Additionally, it’s a good idea to acclimatize to the high altitude gradually to avoid altitude sickness.

What to pack for the Atacama Desert

Keep in mind at least a couple of points when packing for the Atacama Desert:

  • Pack in layers:  Despite being the desert, Atacama’s high altitude makes its winter and nights fairly chilly. Therefore, it’s a good idea to layer your clothing, taking off or adding items as the day or evening progresses.
  • Protect your skin:  As you’ll be vacationing at nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, the sun will be quite strong; so, be proactive about protecting yourself. Using a sunhat, sunscreen, and protective clothing are just a few ways to take care of your skin. Also, try to stay out of the sun during the middle of the day.

In addition, we have compiled the following basic list of recommended items to take on your trip to the Atacama Desert.

[NOTE: These are the essential items to bring along from home specifically for Atacama. Once you’ve decided on your trip, including all of the other destinations you plan to visit, Surtrek will provide you a more detailed packing list.]

  • Hiking boots  – Sturdy, ankle supporting, with anti-slip rubber soles, and comfortably broken in. (Note: The Atacama Desert offers some excellent hiking, especially around the Valle de Luna (“Moon Valley”) and Valle de Arcoiris (“Rainbow Valley”), both close to San Pedro de Atacama)
  • Sturdy sandals  (like Tevas) – For non-hiking day-activities such as hot springs and lake visits, and horseback riding
  • Hiking socks  – Moisture-wicking, lightweight, with little or no cushioning
  • Thermal underwear  – For high ascents such as visits to the Tatio Geysers, especially during winter
  • Hiking pants  – Lightweight and airy for the heat of the day (even unzipping pants for the desert) & shorts
  • Long pants (jeans or leggings)  – For walking around town, horseback riding and the cooler evenings and mornings
  • Long-sleeve thin shirts or t-shirts  – To protect your arms from the desert sun
  • Micro-fleece jacket  – With a hood, &/or light sweater or sweatshirt (nights and mornings are cool, as is Moon Valley)
  • A wide-brimmed hat or sun hat  – With a chin strap
  • Swimwear  – Plus a long-sleeve t-shirt to wear while swimming if you sunburn easily

PERSONAL CARE

  • Sunscreen  – Not only are you in a desert but in a high altitude one. This means that the sun is extremely strong here and the white sands and salt flats act of highly reflective surfaces. So, be sure to apply sunscreen (SPF 50 or higher) all over and reapply throughout the day.
  • Eye drops  – For those who use contact lenses or prescription lens, the dry climate of the high desert may be a strain on the eyes, so don’t forget some eye droplets to add a little moisture.
  • Medication  – If you have any prescription medication, be sure to bring along plenty for the trip, just in case the pharmacies where you’re staying don’t carry what you need. Also, keeping some Advil or Ibuprofen on hand in case of headaches caused by the altitude is a good idea.
  • Remedies for altitude sickness  – Altitude sickness is a frequent problem for visitors to the Atacama. However, most symptoms are relatively mild and go away within a few hours or a day or so. Regional solutions for dealing with altitude sickness include drinking coca tea or chewing coca leaves, while medications from your home country can also be brought along. Otherwise, actions like drinking plenty of water, slowing down and taking deep breaths when feeling out of breath or fatigued, sitting down when feeling lightheaded, eating carbs, and avoiding alcohol are several ways to help your body adjust to the altitude.
  • Lip balm  – with SPF protection
  • Basic first aid  – Even though your guide and lodges will have first aid kits, it never hurts to bring some Band-Aids along on day trips …just in case.
  • Aloe vera lotion  – In the event you do get a sunburn, keep some aloe vera lotion on hand to massage onto the burn at the end of the day. This helps soothe the burn and to speed up healing.
  • Beach towel  (quick-drying micro-fiber travel type) – For use after hot-spring baths and floating in salt lagoons.
  • Backpack, duffle bag, or duffle-backpack
  • Day-pack –  For day trips, you’ll need a comfy pack to carry your essentials: sunscreen, water bottle, hat, glasses, layers, etc. Something lightweight would be best, made with a breathable, airy material.
  • Sunglasses  – The high-desert sun can cause serious eye damage, so be sure to pack some shades! For those who wear contact lenses, we recommend swapping them for prescription glasses for the duration of your trip, as the Atacama can get windy and sand can blow into your eyes, get under your contact lens, and irritate your eyes.
  • Camera –  The Atacama is a visually stunning place, with volcanoes, geysers, salt flats, shimmering high altitude lakes, and diverse wildlife, and you’ll want to bring a good camera to capture those sights.
  • Binoculars  – The vast distances of the Atacama Desert and excellent camouflage abilities of the animals that live here can make it tricky to notice wildlife or passing points of interest while hiking or driving, so pack a pair of travel binoculars to use in such moments.
  • Reusable water bottle –  Not only is using a reusable water bottle environmentally friendly, it’s also important! Spending time in the high, arid desert of southern Chile takes a toll on your body so drinking plenty of water throughout the day, whether you’re physically exerting yourself or not, is important.

Getting to Atacama

To reach the Atacama Desert, most travelers land first in the Chilean capital of Santiago de Chile, where you will be welcomed by a Surtrek representative as soon as you touch down at the city’s Arturo Merino Benítez Airport. (Keep in mind that you will be accompanied and assisted by Surtrek staff or partners throughout your Atacama vacation).

Given the relatively long flight times for reaching Chile, we recommend you take a tour that includes at least one day in historic  Santiago de Chile , where you can rest up for your upcoming desert adventures.

From Santiago, you will be assisted in taking a one-hour flight to the northern Chilean city of Calama, where you will be met and accompanied on a scenic ground transfer to your luxury Atacama lodge in the oasis village of San Pedro de Atacama, in the heart of the Atacama Desert.

The best time to experience Atacama

To enjoy the most pleasant temperatures and the fewest tourists during your Atacama Desert adventure, we recommend the off-peak shoulder-season months of March to May (considered “fall” in South America)) and mid-September to November (“springtime”). With fewer visitors during this period, you’ll feel like you have the desert all to yourself.

The December to February “summer” high season also has pleasant daytime temperatures and warmer nights, though you’ll have to deal with the crowds.

The June to early September low season (the South American “winter”) is less ideal, as the temperatures plummet to close to freezing at night and there’s a greater possibility for storms.

How to Visit the Atacama Desert: 2024 Guide & Itinerary

Visiting San Pedro de Atacama Guide

Table of Contents

Chile’s Atacama Desert is home to spectacular scenery, mighty volcanoes, incredible lagoons and some of the clearest skies in the world. Despite being the driest non-polar region on earth, the Atacama Desert is filled with exciting things to do and is an absolute must when visiting Chile.

I had dreamed of visiting the Atacama Desert for years! Located in Northern Chile, this vast area covers a whopping 105,000 km². Despite its huge size, only small parts of the desert are open to visitors.

The best place to stay when visiting the Atacama Desert is the small town of San Pedro de Atacama. This beautiful town is surrounded by incredible scenery and is close to all the best things to see and do in the area. It’s also a great place to slow down and relax a little.

I spent a whole week in San Pedro de Atacama, so I had plenty of time to explore the town and get a feel for this stunning spot. In this guide, I’ve shared everything you need to know about visiting the Atacama desert, including where to stay, how to get there and the best way to get around.

How to get to San Pedro de Atacama

By plane The easiest way to reach the Atacama Desert is to fly to the nearby city of Calama which is home to the nearest airport. There are regular direct flights between Santiago and Calama. Once you arrive in Calama, you can collect your rental car or jump on a shuttle bus to San Pedro de Atacama. The drive takes just over an hour.

You can book a shuttle in advance here , but it seemed easy enough to book at the airport (and a little cheaper).

Tip : Calama is known to be dangerous, and it’s not recommended that you spend any time there. It’s common for rental agencies to advise against you taking the car into the city, or even refuse to insure you if you do.

You can take a shuttle from Calama airport to San Pedro de Atacama

By bus It’s possible to take a (very long) bus from Santiago to San Pedro de Atacama. The bus to Calama takes 21 hours (ouch), and from here, you can jump on a bus to San Pedro de Atacama. To break the journey up, consider spending a night in La Serena.

If you’re coming from further north or Peru, there is a daily bus between Arica and San Pedro de Atacama.

From Argentina or Bolivia The easiest way to reach San Pedro de Atacama from Argentina is to catch the daily bus from Salta. This bus route is one of the most beautiful in the world. I was meant to head to Salta after San Pedro, but my plans changed for various reasons.

For those planning to travel from Bolivia (or to Bolivia), there is a bus between Uyuni and San Pedro. However, I’d highly recommend doing a multi-day Salt Flats tour. Most of these tours are two days and three nights and take you on an adventure across the incredible landscape.

You can easily book your Salt Flats Tour once you arrive in Uyuni or San Pedro, but I highly recommend La Torre Tours if you want to book in advance. Andes Salt Expeditions is another highly recommended agency.

I highly recommend using Bus Bud to book bus tickets around South America.

How long to spend in San Pedro de Atacama

Most visitors spend four or five days exploring the Atacama Desert. This is the perfect amount of time to see the highlights, acclimatise to the high altitude, and rest between tours (the day tours can be tiring).

I spent a week in San Pedro de Atacama which was enough time. If I’m honest, it was too much time. I had a couple of days completely free, and while it was nice to rest and enjoy the town, I didn’t need to spend that much time there.

Another thing to consider is where you are going before or after San Pedro. If you plan to do the Uyuni Salt Flats, you likely won’t need to spend as much time in San Pedro. While the Atacama Desert is incredible, so is the Uyuni Salt Flats area.

The town of San Pedro de Atacama

Both spots boast incredible landscapes but also have similar features. For example, El Tatio Geysers is one of the most popular things to do in Atacama. However, you also typically see Geysers during the salt flats tour. They might not be quite as impressive, but they’re still pretty cool!

Likewise, during a multi-day Salt Flats tour, you can see flamingoes, visit colourful lagoons, and relax in hot springs, so you might feel there’s no need to do these activities in San Pedro.

Of course, it’s entirely a personal choice about how much you want to see. If you want to see everything the Atacama Desert has to offer, then plan to spend at least four or five days in San Pedro. However, if I’m being completely honest, I don’t think you need to spend too much time in San Pedro if you’re also visiting the Salt Flats.

It’s worth checking with your Salt Flats tour operator about where you visit during the tour. Most tours between Uyuni and San Pedro cover the Geysers, several lagoons and the hot springs, but it’s better to double-check this in advance.

Best time of year to visit San Pedro de Atacama

The great news is that the Atacama Desert can be visited all year round. However, despite being the driest place on earth, it does experience a rainy season between January and March. This time of year can be unpredictable, and activities are often cancelled due to poor road conditions or cloudy skies. I’d avoid this time of year if you can.

Besides the rainy season, there’s no bad time to visit the Atacama Desert. The winter months of July to September are generally known to have the best stargazing opportunities. This is also the dry season, and clear skies are more or less (almost) guaranteed. The temperatures also tend to be milder, making exploring more bearable (but it does get cold at night). The winter months are also known as the low season, so there will be fewer crowds.

The winter months are the best time to go stargazing in the Atacama Desert

November through January are the busiest months in San Pedro de Atacama, and this is considered the high season. The days are hot and there’s lots going on. However, you might find prices to be higher and some of the attractions to be very crowded.

Atacama Desert: rent a car or join tours?

Ah, the big question. Should you rent a car in the Atacama Desert? Well… yes and no.

Hiring a car in the Atacama Desert is the best way to see the area. You’ll be able to explore at your own pace and have complete freedom. It’s also easier to avoid the crowds when you hire a car. Most tours leave for the same attractions at the same time of day, so you can try to avoid these times.

However, as with most things, there’s a catch! Many of the roads in the Atacama Desert are rocky, sandy and filled with potholes. Driving in the Atacama Desert is not for the faint of heart. Granted, you’ll still be able to access most places, but only if you’re a confident driver.

I was desperate to hire a car in the Atacama Desert, but it was too expensive, especially as I was alone. I was also a little nervous about driving along the dirt paths by myself. I heard stories at my hostel about flat tyres, getting stuck in the sand, and getting lost along sandy roads. So, in the end, I feel like I made the right decision.

I did spend one day in a car after meeting some people at the hostel, and it was a great day. But I don’t think it was essential.

Sunset at Valle de La Luna

The good news is that you can still see the highlights of the Atacama Desert without hiring a car. There are affordable day tours to all the best places in the area. I don’t think you will miss out by not hiring a car. Sure, you’re tied to day tours and following an itinerary, but the guides know all the best spots, and you can relax and not worry about driving.

On one tour, a girl in my group asked to pull over for photos twice, and the guides had no issue doing so. All of the tours I joined also had English-speaking guides.

The cost will depend on your situation. I added up the cost of hiring a car; with insurance and petrol, it would have been more expensive than joining tours. Of course, if you’re travelling with others, you can split the cost of a car rental.

It’s worth noting that most attractions have an entrance fee. This is (usually) included in the cost of a tour, but you’ll need to factor in these additional costs if you plan to rent a car.

If you plan to rent a car, I suggest using Rental Cars . I always tend to find the cheapest car rental deals here. Most car rental companies here are based in Calama but there are a few options in San Pedro. If you walk down the main street, you’ll see signs advertising car rentals.

Most of the tours from San Pedro include a snack, lunch or cocktail

Accommodation in San Pedro de Atacama

San Pedro de Atacama’s popularity means it has a range of accommodations on offer. From luxury hotels with pools to hostels, there is something for all budgets.

Best hostels in San Pedro de Atacama

If you’re looking for a good hostel in San Pedro, I can’t recommend Casa Voyage enough. I spent a whole week here, and it’s one of my favourite hostels. The dorm rooms have big lockers and curtains on the bed (it’s the small things), the staff are very friendly and helpful, and the hostel has a social atmosphere. The WiFi worked well, and there was also hot water for showers (a rarity in San Pedro de Atacama).

Other popular hostels in San Pedro include Hostal Mamatierra and Anka Hostel .

Casa Voyage Hostel

Mid-range hotels

Hostal Desert is a great mid-range option for those looking for more privacy than a hostel but still wanting to budget. It also includes a tasty breakfast.

Hostal Likancabur is another highly rated option for those on a budget.

Luxury hotels

If you’re after a bit of luxury in the desert, San Pedro has a range of fancy hotels. Our Habitats is a popular hotel with gorgeous rooms and an incredible swimming pool to cool down on those hot summer days. It’s a little bit out of town, but you have everything you need on-site.

Hotel Pascual Andino is another fantastic option, and it is much closer to the town.

Budget for the Atacama Desert

Chile isn’t known to be the cheapest destination in South America, and San Pedro de Atacama is no exception. If you’re backpacking South America and have just come from Peru and/or Bolivia, you’ll likely get a bit of a shock regarding the prices.

In my one week in the Atacama Desert, I spent nearly $400. This included a week in a dorm room, food and drinks, day tours, and transport. Granted, I could have done it cheaper. I didn’t need to stay for a week, I didn’t need to do as many tours as I did, and I bought a coffee most days. However, San Pedro isn’t the cheapest of places.

If you’re looking to visit the Atacama Desert on a budget, the best thing to do is limit the day tours. For most people, the tours are the most expensive part of the trip. As I said above, you don’t need to visit every area, especially if you’re coming from the Uyuni Salt Flats (or planning to see them after).

The tours generally range between $25 and $100, depending on which ones you choose.

Eating out in San Pedro can also be expensive. Most main meals cost around $15, and even a coffee will cost you $4. Thankfully, there are a couple of supermarkets and markets in the town that sell fresh produce. This means it’s easy to prepare your own food. Many of the tours also include breakfast and/or lunch.

Las lagunas altiplánicas (Miscanti y Miñiques) are a must visit in San Pedro de Atacama

Altitude sickness in San Pedro de Atacama

San Pedro de Atacama lies at 2,450 metres above sea level. While this is manageable for most people, altitude sickness is still possible. On my first day in the town, I felt a bit breathless when walking around, but I soon got used to it.

Attractions such as Piedras Rojas (Red Rocks) and El Tatio are both at high elevations, reaching up to around 4,200 metres. They’re only day trips, so they tend to be manageable, but it’s not uncommon for visitors to experience headaches, breathlessness, and dizziness.

Try to spend some time in San Pedro de Atacama before visiting the places at even higher elevations. This will give your body time to get used to the altitude.

Cycling to Garganta del Diablo is one of the best things to do in the Atacama desert

Other tips for visiting San Pedro de Atacama

  • Avoid the tap water: There is mixed information about whether the tap water in San Pedro de Atacama is safe to drink. Personally, I avoided the tap water. While it’s normally clean, it has a very high mineral content and can easily upset stomachs.
  • Carry cash: It’s important to have some cash when visiting the Atacama Desert. While more places are starting to accept card payments, a hefty fee is often attached. You’ll also need some money for smaller restaurants and for paying entrance fees to the attractions which are cash only.
  • Book the tours when you’re in San Pedro: You can book your San Pedro tours online in advance. However, this tends to be more expensive and I found the tours to be cheaper in the town. Of course, sometimes it’s better to have everything booked in advance, especially in the high season.
  • Verify your tour company: The main street of San Pedro de Atacama is lined with tour operators selling day tours to all attractions. Some places offer deals that seem too good to be true, but it’s a sensible idea to check the quality of the tour companies in advance. Not all tour companies have the same inclusions or quality of service. You can check reviews on Google or speak to your accommodation. My hostel matched the prices I found in town, providing they were of the same quality.
  • Take snacks on the day trips: Most day trips include a meal or snack, but I suggest taking additional snacks. The tours can be long and tiring, and food is often quite limited.
  • Expect to get dirty: Being in the middle of the desert, it’s safe to say you can expect to get dirty on your trip. One tiny bit of wind will blow sand into your face and cover your clothes. Make sure to wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.
  • Pace yourself: With so much to see, extreme weather and high altitude, exploring the Atacama Desert can take its toll on your body. Try to schedule time to rest between all of the exploring.

Valle de La Luna is an epic sunset spot

  • Moisturise : Atacama is the driest place on earth, and boy, does your body feel it. Make sure to wear plenty of moisturiser to avoid being uncomfortable.
  • Suncream and more suncream : The sun in the Atacama Desert is STRONG. Even in the winter, the sun can burn you in a matter of minutes. Be sure to wear plenty of SPF and take it with you on all the day trips. It’s also a sensible idea to always carry plenty of water.

Where to eat in San Pedro de Atacama

Despite being a tourist hot spot, I wouldn’t say San Pedro is exactly known for its food. Having said that, there are still plenty of cafes and restaurants to try. Here are a few of my favourites.

It’s no secret that Chile loves its coffee and pastries, and there is certainly no shortage in the desert. My favourite bakery was a French bakery called Franchuteria . The bakery sells fresh bread, croissants, and sandwiches. The raspberry and white chocolate croissant is literally the best croissant I’ve ever had.

If you’re after an incredible empanada or cake, try Emporio Andino . It’s a busy spot but well worth the wait for a table. Roots is another excellent spot to grab lunch. It has a range of food on offer and an extensive vegetarian menu.

One of my favourite restaurants in the town is  Incas , a Peruvian restaurant serving traditional dishes. It’s reasonably priced , and the food is incredible. Adobe is a popular Chilean restaurant. I didn’t eat here, but others at the hostel said it was delicious.

Suggested itinerary for the Atacama Desert

Before finalising your itinerary, have a read of my post on the best things to do in the Atacama Desert. Here, I’ve shared all the best things to do in the Atacama Desert with honest thoughts on what’s worth it.

When building your Atacama Desert itinerary, it’s important to consider the altitude. Spots such as Piedras Rojas and El Tatio take you well above 4,000 meters. It’s recommended to spend a day or two in San Pedro de Atacama first to help you acclimatise.

Below, I’ve shared a suggested four-day itinerary featuring the best things to do in the Atacama Desert. This itinerary is mostly based on joining day tours and can be changed to suit your preferences and schedule, but try to keep El Tatio and Piedras Rojas towards the end.

Sunset at Vallecito

  • Arrive in San Pedro de Atacama
  • Explore the town and visit the markets
  • In the evening, go stargazing (if there’s a full moon, the tours won’t be operating)
  • In the morning, cycle to Garganta del Diablo (The Devil’s Throat) to see the unique rock formations
  • In the afternoon, visit Laguna Cejar or the Puritama Hot Springs
  • Consider a stargazing tour if you didn’t go the night before
  • Spend the whole day on a guided tour of Piedras Rojas . Choose a tour that also includes the Laguna Chaxa
  • In the morning, take an early morning tour to El Tatio Geysers
  • In the afternoon, join a tour to either Valle de La Luna (Valley of the Moon) or Vallecito for sunset (Vallecito is my personal preference, it’s such a beautiful landscape)

Other things to do in San Pedro de Atacama

I’ve written an article on the best things to do in Atacama, but here’s a quick overview for those planning your itinerary in a rush.

  • Visit the Meteorite Museum : If you’re looking for an evening activity or an alternative to stargazing, consider a trip to the Meteorite Museum, where you can see (and touch) actual meteorites. It’s a great option if your stargazing tour is cancelled due to weather or a full moon.
  • Go sandboarding : If you want to explore your adventurous side, consider sandboarding on the sand dunes. Most tours take you to Valle de La Muerte (Death Valley).
  • Visit Rainbow Mountain : Did you know the Atacama desert has its own Rainbow Mountain? You can visit it on a half-day morning tour.
  • Visit Salar de Atacama: If you’re not planning to visit Salar de Uyuni , consider a trip to Atacama’s very own salt flats. They are the largest salt flats in Chile.
  • Relax in the Purilibre Thermal Springs : These hot springs aren’t as well known as the Puritama Hot Springs. They’re free to enter, and you’ll need to do a short hike to reach them. There are no facilities, which makes it a much wilder experience.
  • Climb a volcano: If you want a challenge, consider joining a tour to hike one of the nearby volcanoes. It’s possible to hike both the Cerro Toco and the Licancabur volcanoes, with Cerro Toco being the easiest of the two. You’ll need a guide for the hikes, and it can be quite expensive.

Cycling to the Devil's Throat from San Pedro de Atacama

Final thoughts: is visiting San Pedro de Atacama worth it?

If you want to explore an area filled with natural wonders and unique landscapes like nowhere else on earth then yes, visiting Atacama is well worth it.

I’ve been fortunate enough to see a lot of this world, and the stunning landscapes of the Atacama Desert still blew me away. It really is stunning.

I will say that San Pedro de Atacama is a very touristy town. As most people opt to join day tours, many attractions can feel a little commercial. However, this is just part of visiting the Atacama Desert and all you can do is embrace it. If you enjoy getting off the beaten path and avoiding the crowds, San Pedro probably isn’t the right place for you.

Another thing to consider is whether you plan to visit Salar de Uyuni. Personally, I don’t think you need to spend too much time in Atacama if you’re also visiting the Uyuni Salt Flats on a multi-day tour. The landscapes tend to be very similar, but Uyuni is much wilder and more remote. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done!

Having said that, spending time exploring the Atacama Desert is still well worth it. It’s home to some incredible landscapes that can only be seen there. The Atacama Desert also has some of the clearest skies in the world, which only adds to the magic of the area.

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Chile's Atacama Desert

It's like nowhere else on the planet.

Best Things to Do

Where to stay, best time to visit, how to get there, how to get around.

Tatsiana Volskaya/Getty Images

Traveling to the Atacama Desert feels like stepping onto a different planet. There’s a reason for that — the soil here is similar to that on Mars. It’s the driest desert in the world and almost always voted as one of the best places in the world to go stargazing . If you want to experience breathtaking nature, this is the place for you. The town of San Pedro de Atacama sits at almost 8,000 feet above sea level, which is partially why it’s so dry. Other visitable parts of the desert go up to 17,000 feet — the same altitude as the Mount Everest base camp.

This area of Chile is significant for several reasons. It’s millions of years old and has ruins from around 10,000 years ago. Since there’s no light pollution, it’s one of the best places in the world to see the night sky. The most powerful telescope on Earth operates here and is crucial to research. Visitors to the desert have unparalleled access to the stars and planets of our solar system. From the local culture and Incan history to the salt flats and volcanoes, there’s no shortage of opportunities to engage with nature.

We spoke with Alain Maury, an astronomer at San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Explorations (SPACE); Jéssica Senna, B2B manager at Pukarumi Travel Agency; and Jonathan Rojas, marketing manager at Nayara Resorts to compile a complete guide to visiting the Atacama Desert.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • You can tackle four separate hikes while visiting the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), which appears as if you’re actually walking on the moon.
  • El Tatio is the third largest geyser field in the world, with more than 80 geysers and 100-plus fumaroles (spaces where volcanic gas is emitted).
  • The ALMA telescope is the largest and most powerful in the world and beyond — even more than the Hubble Space Telescope.
  • Pukará de Quitor is an archaeological site north of San Pedro de Atacama with incredible views and one of the most popular attractions in the city.
  • Cerro Toco, a dormant volcano near San Pedro de Atacama, is accessible for beginner hikers.

Join an astronomical tour.

Astronomical tours are one of the most popular things to do in the Atacama Desert. Although you can simply look up and see the sky at any given moment, it’s best to learn more from an astronomer or tour guide.

Explore Piedras Rojas and Altiplanic Lagoons.

This full-day tour picks you up from your hotel at 6:30 a.m. and has you home by 5 p.m. “You'll visit Piedras Rojas, Altiplanic Lagoons, and Laguna Chaxa,” says Senna. “There's a flamingo reserve in the heart of the Salar de Atacama. This is a classic and must-[do] tour because you visit many special places.”

Explore the salt flats.

You can take a tour of “three salt flats (Ruta de los Salares) and a caldera where volcanoes exploded millions of years ago,” says Senna. The salt flats in this region are like nowhere else on Earth .

Visit the seven hidden lagoons of Baltinache.

These lagoons contain so much salt that it makes floating easy. This tour brings visitors to seven different lagoons, but for conservation reasons, you can only swim in the first and last ones. However, the half-day tour has fantastic reviews.

Go sandboarding in the Death Valley.

For adventure lovers, sandboarding is a great option. Companies like Sandboard San Pedro de Atacama arrange group tours and can accommodate a variety of skill levels.

Courtesy of Tierra Atacama Hotel

The Atacama Desert is more than 40,000 square miles, so travelers have plenty of options when it comes to accommodations. “There are about 400 places, from camping [sites] to Airbnbs to high-end hotels,” says Maury.

Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa

Tierra Atacama Hotel & Spa , the first solar-powered property in South America, has a spa, dining area, and curated excursions. It's also one of the most popular resorts in the desert, due to its elevated atmosphere and ease of visiting the region.

Explora Atacama

This hotel is one of the best in the world for stargazing as it has its own private observatory for guests. Explora Atacama is an all-inclusive adventure hotel, which means all your food and excursions are included in the nightly rate.

Awasi Atacama

Awasi is home to 12 private suites inspired by pre-Inca ruins, with thatched roofs and private solariums. Guests also have a personal guide to help them explore the wonders of the Atacama Desert.

Milodge Elqui Domos

If you’re looking for a unique experience, Elqui Domos has seven geodesic domes with retractable ceilings to see the sky from your bed. It’s in the Elqui Valley, which is located on the southern end of the desert and an important area for producing carmenère and syrah wines.

Our Habitas Atacama

This boutique property houses 51 rooms plus a pool, a wellness area, and a communal gathering space. It has six pillars — art and culture, wellness, adventure, learning, food and beverage, and music — and daily programming is centered around these, in addition to the activities you can discover in the desert.

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

The best time to visit the Atacama Desert is September through December as there are fewer tourists, warmer temperatures, and plenty of stargazing opportunities. “[It's] a year-round destination,” says Rojas. “During winter, you have clearer skies; during summer, more flora and fauna and much more colorful sunsets.”

“Remember, when it comes to deserts, the thermal range is quite large,” says Senna. “In the summer period, which runs from September to March, it's quite hot during the day — 86 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit — and 50 degrees at night. In winter, from April to August, the temperatures are lower, varying between 50 and 59 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 32 or 23 degrees at night.”

Watch out for the rainy season in January, February, and March. “When it rains in San Pedro de Atacama, all the parks close,” says Senna.

“January [and] February, which is the austral summer, is also known as altiplanic winter and may be cloudier than the rest of the year,” notes Maury. If the primary reason you’re visiting is stargazing, you’ll be disappointed to see nothing but clouds on your visit.

It’s surprisingly simple to reach the Atacama Desert. Most people choose to fly into Santiago, the capital of Chile. You can fly from New York (JFK) to Santiago (SCL) nonstop in under 11 hours on LATAM. Then, take a roughly two-hour flight from Santiago to Calama (CJC). It’s about an hour and 15 minutes by car from the airport to San Pedro de Atacama. You can take a bus, taxi, or arrange a pickup with your hotel. Renting a car and road tripping from Calama is also an option. Senna recommends Transvip for arranging an airport transfer. San Pedro de Atacama is on the border of Chile and Bolivia, which makes it easy to drive from the desert to Bolivia’s salt flats , the largest in the world.

There are three main options for getting around the Atacama Desert, each with pros and cons. You can rent a car, take a taxi, or go on an organized tour. “There is no public transport in San Pedro de Atacama and no service or app like Uber,” says Senna. “Getting around the city is done on foot or by bicycle.”

The airport in Calama has Avis, Rent a Car, and Europcar, to name a few. This option is helpful if you want to see multiple parts of the desert. However, as Maury explains, “Many touristic places, controlled by the local communities, tend to only admit people coming with a tour agency.” Senna adds, “Take into account that some roads are very bad, and it's common to see broken-down cars where there's no signal, so the recommendation is not to go by car on your own to the hidden lagoons of Baltinache and El Tatio.”

If you rent a car, you need to be sure it has good tires and can go off-road. With a regular city car, you must stay on the paved roads, making it difficult to visit many of the most popular places. Senna adds that even if you rent a car, you should hire a tour guide so they can give you all the information about the desert. After all, you'll want to learn about your surroundings.

“There are taxis, but there is no organized system for them,” says Senna. “So, if you want a taxi, you should get the phone numbers of local drivers.” Then, when you need to go somewhere, you can message the driver to pick you up. This is common in other parts of South America — I did the same thing when I went to San Carlos de Bariloche in Patagonia.

Organized Tours

The most common option is booking an organized tour where the company arranges your transportation. This area has several operators like Pukarumi Travel Agency . You can book tours through your hotel or separately via the agency. Not only is it easier to do this, but you get to learn all about the sites you’re visiting rather than researching them on your own.

Arrival to the Capital of Chile

On the first day of your adventure, you’ll have time to settle in and experience Santiago De Chile .

Upon landing in Santiago, our local representative will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel. ‘Santiago is Chile’ say the Santiaguinos, and a visit to this great city will show you why. After settling in your hotel, you´ll have the remainder of the day to explore at leisure.

Located in central Chile, backed by the Andes to the east the city was founded in 1541 in the fertile valley in which it sits. Santiago is Chile’s cultural, commercial, industrial, and political center. A cosmopolitan city, with ample restaurants, bars, hotels, and shopping, from tiny boutique and craft fairs to giant shopping malls.

There are cultural attractions such as art galleries, museums, theaters, opera and ballet, lively nightlife, plus parks, tree-lined streets, and distinct neighborhoods. You’ll see brand new high rises and supermarkets next to old, shabby buildings. You’ll have to fend off vendors and peddlers on the busses but ride in peace and comfort on the ultra-modern subway system.

Included: Private transfer from Santiago airport to your hotel with assistance; Accommodation in Santiago. (Meals – None).

On the first day of your adventure, you’ll have time to settle in and experience Santiago De Chile.

Santiago like a local

Your second day in Chile will include plenty of exploration. You’ll learn the ins and outs of the city with a compelling Santiago tour.

Explore the exciting city of Santiago like a local with our fun and immersive city tour. Accompanied by your private guide, you’ll discover hidden hotspots as well as the tourist highlights of Santiago.

The trip begins with a subway ride to the Metro Station University of Chile. From here, you’ll wander along the main pedestrian city promenade, visiting iconic buildings such as the Palacio de Gobierno La Moneda and the Santiago Stock Exchange.

Next, you’ll set off towards Plaza de Armas, home to the gorgeous Cathedral, the Natural History Museum, and the Central Post Office. You’ll stop at Vega Central for a traditional Chilean snack before heading into the colorful bohemian district of Bellavista, where you’ll try a classic Santiaguino drink.

From here, you’ll hop in the cable car to the top of San Cristóbal, offering panoramic views over the entire city. Afterward, your guide will give you some local options for lunch (not included) before leaving you to spend the rest of the day in Santiago exploring at your own pace.

Included: One-way metro ticket, Private English speaking guide, Coffee at Café Haití, Sopaipilla or Churro at the Plaza de Armas (Main Square), Terremoto at restaurant Galindo or Venecia, Cablecar ticket; Accommodation in Santiago. (Meals – Breakfast).

Discover Valparaiso & Viña del Mar

Explore even more of what Santiago has to offer on the third day of your Atacama vacation.

Discover the magical wonders of the vast Casablanca valley, known for its extensive vineyards located right by the Pacific Ocean and, of course, its sumptuous wine. Upon arrival, you will first visit the charming seaside town of Viña del Mar, dotted with pretty parks and floral ornaments.

The tour then continues to the picturesque port of Valparaiso, founded in the 16th century, and whose city center was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2003. The enchanting town is built over many hills, which are accessed by narrow streets, long stairways, and a series of lifts.

The tour ends with an optional visit of Pablo Neruda ’s house La Sebastiana’, before returning to Santiago.

Included: Group excursion with transportation and guide; Accommodation in Santiago. (Meals – Breakfast).

Arrival to the Atacama Desert

On day four, you’ll head to San Pedro Atacama where you’ll be able to relax and adjust to your new surroundings.

Private transfer to the airport to take your flight towards Calama. Upon landing in Calama airport, your transfer will take you to San Pedro de Atacama. If arriving from a lower altitude, we would recommend spending your first day in San Pedro de Atacama relaxing and getting used to the altitude before doing anything overly physical.

San Pedro de Atacama is a town set on an arid high plateau in the Andes mountains of northeastern Chile. Its dramatic surrounding landscape incorporates desert, salt flats, volcanoes, geysers, and hot springs. The Valle de la Luna in the nearby Los Flamencos National Reserve is a lunarlike depression with unusual rock formations, a huge sand dune, and pink-streaked mountains.

Included: Private transfer from the hotel to Santiago airport with assistance; Group transfer from Calama airport to hotel in Atacama; Accommodation in Atacama. (Meals – Breakfast).

Altiplanic Lagoon & Atacama Salt Lake

Your fifth day will include plenty of incredible sights including Salar de Atacama and the Andrean highlands.

Travel between flamingo-filled lagoons, horizon bound salt flats, and highland lakes on this full-day group tour from San Pedro de Atacama, whisking you through Chile’s most stunning natural landscapes.

Setting off early, you’ll head for the Salar de Atacama, a gorgeous expanse of grey-white salt dotted with wetlands. This unique and fragile habitat is home to all kinds of birdlife, including large flocks of bright pink flamingoes. Here, you’ll follow a nature trail, stopping at the viewpoints to observe the flamingoes and snapping some once-in-a-lifetime shots.

Next, you’ll ascend to the Andean highlands, reaching 4,200 meters above sea-level. Hopping off the bus, you’ll walk along the shores of two deep-blue lakes mirroring volcanoes and surreal, pastel-colored wetlands.

Back down in the Atacama Valley, you’ll hike through a hidden gorge named the Quebrada de Jere, an oasis of fruit trees, flowers, and herbs near the traditional Andean village of Toconao. It’s a day of eye-opening contrasts, giving you a spectacular glimpse of the Atacama.

Included: Group excursion with transfer and guide, Entrance fees; Accommodation in Atacama. (Meals – Breakfast, Lunch).

Tatio Geysers & Moon Valley

Day six of your Atacama desert trip will involve an incredible sunrise and sunset. You’ll be whisked away on a group tour to see geysers, Moon Valley, and a spectacular view of the Andes.

Early in the morning, explore the highest geyser field on the planet during this brilliant half-day group tour. Hidden up in the Andes at 4,300 meters above sea-level and surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, El Tatio is like nowhere else on earth.

The geysers are most striking around daybreak when temperatures hover around the sub-zero mark, so you’ll leave San Pedro de Atacama before dawn in order to get the best views of the hydro-activity.

As you wander between gurgling steam vents and bubbling mud pools circled by multicolored mineral deposits and bright algae, the early start will soon pay off. Known by the locals as’ The Weeping Grandfather’, El Tatio is a mythical site that feels almost like part of a fantasy world.

Once you’ve finished exploring the geysers and snapping the action, you’ll be treated to a buffet breakfast, where you can warm up with a cup of coffee. Afterward, you can enjoy a relaxing soak in the natural hot springs before hopping back on the bus. On the way back to San Pedro, you can take a light trek along the mountain brook of Puripica, passing through a cactus-lined canyon.

In the afternoon, enjoy the fantastic excursion that allows you to discover the Salt Mountain range and the fabulous views it offers over the valley. Moon Valley landscapes seem like walking on Mars or through Death Valley, with its spectacular scenery and intriguing rock formations before continuing to the “Three Marias” an interesting geological formation located next to a former salt mine.

At dusk, climb a large sand dune in the Moon Valley for spectacular views of the sunset over the Andes Mountains.

Included: El Tatio Geysers & Moon Valley excursions in group service, entrance fees; Accommodation in Atacama. (Meals – Breakfast).

Leaving Atacama

The final day of your Atacama desert trip will take you to Calama airport, where you can continue your Chilean adventure.

It’s time to hit the road again as you make your way to your next destination where if you are planning to, you can enjoy exploring the beauty and diversity of Chile further. Your group transfer will take you to Calama airport for your onward travels.

Included: Group transfer from Atacama hotel to Calama airport. (Meals – Breakfast).

Where to go stargazing in Chile according to a local astronomer

From the snow-capped peaks in Torres del Paine to lush vineyards in the Central Valley and gurgling geysers in El Tatio, Chile is known for its startlingly diverse climates and vast, impressive landscapes. Yet, when the sun sinks and the skies morph into a dazzling dome of stars, some of Chile's most magnificent spaces come into their own. Thankfully, the country is home to a handful of dark sky reserves where the lack of light pollution can help astronomy enthusiasts feel that bit closer to the universe. Local author and astronomer Rodrigo Zúñiga Vásquez reveals what makes Chile an astronomer's paradise.

How did you get into astronomy?

It was a coincidence really. I grew up in Concepción in southern Chile where there are lots of clouds, and I didn’t know much about the stars. However, after studying English and French at university, I ended up moving to the Atacama Desert to translate astrotourism tours. After several months of interpreting, I found myself conducting my own observations, and it wasn’t long before I spent every evening looking at the sky.

I realised that the fascination I had with it was nothing to do with distance, but with the experiences I had lived beneath it. I became interested in the anthropological side of astronomy. It allowed me to investigate the past and discover how we build relationships with the sky. With this in mind, I created the Bajo La Noche De Atacama (Under the Atacama Night) astronomy tour, which focuses on the anthropological aspects while still tying in scientific facts, including distances, masses and sizes. It’s designed to help guests understand and appreciate the universe more.

Why do you love stargazing?

For every important moment in your life, there’s a sky, which creates a special connection between the universe and your own memories. This is what led me to write my books Under the Atacama Night: The Constellations of the Zodiac From Southern Latitudes and Under the Atacama Night: Flying Animal Constellations . The first title is an illustrated compilation of the zodiac constellations and the second is a retelling of the mythology of the constellations. I hope the books help others to not only learn about the universe and its various celestial objects, but to also consider their own relationship with the night sky.

What makes Chile such a haven for stargazers?

Chile has more than 2,000 miles of mountain range running through it, creating a variety of places without light pollution. This is an essential condition for successful stargazing. The Atacama Desert, located in the north of the country, is particularly good for mapping out the constellations as it has barely any clouds and averages around 300 clear nights a year. It’s also one of the driest places on Earth — this low humidity means the sky is crisp and sharp, offering the perfect conditions for astronomical observations.

How can I plan my trip to the Atacama Desert?

The town of San Pedro de Atacama is a great base with lots of accommodation options and stargazing tours. Each tour offers something a little different. On my tour, the Bajo La Noche De Atacama , we first observe the sky with the naked eye, identifying the most important symbols and constellations created over thousands of years of observations. We then look at the sky through telescopes, which, depending on the season, can reveal nebulae, clusters, varying planets and stars at different stages of evolution. After warming up with a bonfire and a hot drink, we have an astrophotography session in a dark area of our observation site.

The astrotour with Layana Travel is another fantastic option. Lead by a Latin American guide, the tour takes a deep dive into Andean archaeoastronomy and maps out the constellations of the Southern Hemisphere using a laser pointer.

I also recommend spending the night in one of the villages outside the desert, such as Socaire, a quaint, rural hamlet home to around 400 people. Many guided tours to the Atacama Desert stop for lunch there to sample traditional dishes such as patasca , a stew made of pork, beef, corn and potatoes.

What else can I do in the Atacama Desert?

There are all kinds of activities and tours to take in the lunar landscapes of the Atacama Desert. Travellers can trek to the high-altitude lagoons of Miscanti and Miñiques, witness the geothermal spectacle of El Tatio Geysers at sunrise, marvel at flamingos on the Atacama Salt Flats and soak in the Puritama Hot Springs.

What’s your all-time favourite spot for stargazing in Chile?

Piedras Rojas, located approximately two hours’ drive south of San Pedro de Atacama, is a particularly special spot of mine. It’s around 13,000ft high, with a shallow salt flat surrounded by reddish rocks and mountain peaks that all point up to the starry sky. If I have friends visiting, I always take them to the viewpoint just before you get to the Piedras Rojas site itself.

Why do you think stargazing has regained popularity recently?

This year we’re seeing lots of solar phenomena through the auroras and eclipses. There’s a lunar eclipse in September, which will be witnessed across the world, plus a solar eclipse in southern Chile in October. While this doesn’t affect what we see in terms of stars, people are thinking more about the sky in general.

What does the future hold for you?

As an amateur astronomer and writer, I’m keen to keep studying the sky and its stories. I love rediscovering things we felt were lost or have been forgotten. We’re reclaiming aspects that will flourish again, and I want to continue sharing that with more people through my tours and my writing.

What makes Chile such a special destination for visitors?

We have so much variety when it comes to scenery and experiences. Beyond the Atacama Desert and stargazing, I recommend visiting Chiloé Island and the wine region located in Central Valley, just south of Santiago. The former has an undulating, wooded landscape with unique viticulture traditions.

Three more destinations for stargazing in Chile

1. Torres del Paine, Magallanes In Chile’s far south, in the northeastern part of the Magallanes region, Torres del Paine National Park is known for its shimmering lakes, cobalt glaciers and towering granite spires. When the skies are clear, this monumental landscape provides an idyllic backdrop for mapping out the constellations, largely due to its remote location and lack of light pollution. On any clear night, you can step outside into the darkness and be treated to a sparkling show as the stars of the southern hemisphere reflect off water, ice and snow.

2. Elqui Valley, La Serena Declared the world’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2015, this vineyard-filled valley has the perfect climate and geographical conditions for seeing star-studded skies: the Andes mountains to the east block the clouds, there are over 320 days of sunshine a year and humidity levels are particularly low. The nearby town of Vicuña is a great base from which to explore the area, with five observatories available to visit. The Observatorio Cerro Mamalluca and the Observatorio del Pangue run guided tours which include the chance to look through several large telescopes.

3. Pucón, Lake District The town of Pucón, located in central Chile’s Lake District, attracts intrepid travellers with its volcanic hiking trails, whitewater rafting and vast array of wildlife. Yet Chile’s ‘adventure capital’ isn’t limited to adrenaline-inducing activities: when the sun sets, its rural location, high altitude and dry climate delivers unique stargazing opportunities in droves. Various operators offer tours which incorporate Indigenous perspectives on the night sky, the chance to observe celestial objects through professional-grade telescopes and a visit to Pucón’s serene hot spings.
