Ventura Itineraries
Ventura review, review of ventura.
The 2008-built MS Ventura cruise ship is one of the Grand-class P&O UK liners, with sistership MS Azura .
The vessel (IMO number 9333175) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310562000) and registered in Hamilton .
History - construction and ownership
P&O Cruises is a subsidiary company and two brands owned by Carnival Corporation - P&O UK and P&O Australia. In 2000, P&O Cruises became subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises, which merged with Carnival Corporation in 2003. P and O is the world's oldest cruise company, starting passenger shipping operations in 1822 on the routes connecting England with Iberia.
The 3100-passenger ship Ventura was christened in Port Southampton on April 16, 2008, by the famous British actress Dame Helen Mirren (assisted by a team of Royal Marine Commandos). The liner is particularly larger - by 30 % than any other vessel in the P&O Cruises fleet. This means there's more room for contemporary facilities, like expanded children-related amenities, recreational opportunities (bungee jumping) and different restaurants. What is more, it is difficult to find any sign of traditional P&O Cruises in the hardware - no card room, nowhere to have a sit in the library, no art auctions (all the pictures are on sale, but showed with the price) and no monotonous teak-and-cream coloring (there are cheery decor and modern artwork instead). The travelers are also distinct; still quite a lot of the retired cruisers that P&O Cruises is known for attracting, but also lots of families with kids.
Decks and Cabins
P&O Ventura staterooms (1556 total, in 35 grades) include 26x Suites, 853x Balconies, 223x Oceanviews, 434x Inside, 2x Family Suites, 18x Studios (single-occupancy cabins). Most cabins are sized 165 ft2 / 15 m2. Most cabin balconies are sized 45 ft2 / 4 m2. The largest passenger accommodations are the Aft Penthouse Suites (410 ft2 / 38 m2, with terrace sized 180 ft2 / 17 m2).
The boat has 18 decks of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 9 with cabins.
Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks
The quality of food aboard Ventura is of a high standard for such a big ship. The menus offered in the three main dining rooms change daily, and there is a Gala Menu on formal nights as well, put together by Marco Pierre White. Cinnamon and Saffron (two of the main dining rooms) offer 'Freedom Dining', meaning that guests can turn up anytime between 6:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and dine where and with whom they like. Bay Tree is the third MDR and offers set-time dining called "Club Dining" by the line. There are 3 specialty restaurants, 2 formal ones - Epicurean, serving molecular gastronomy cuisine and Sindhu by Michelin-starred chef Atul Kochhar. The one informal restaurant, which proved popular on sister vessel Azura and replaced Las Ramblas, is The Glass House by wine expert Olly Smith (for-fee tapas-style restaurant).
Follows the complete list of Ventura restaurants and food bars.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport
P&O company doesn't go in for huge West End-style productions. Instead, expect revue-type shows with an emphasis on the singing talents of the performer; ventriloquists, magicians, and tribute acts; British comedy. In the Arena Theatre, there are two main shows nightly. Times vary in order to accommodate the set dining times. Elsewhere on the ship, the main venues for live entertainment are Havana, at the back of the ship, and The Tamarind Club - a walk-through venue on Deck 7. In both these venues, guests will find bands or singers on at various times throughout the whole evening. There is usually a guest band too, depending on where the vessel is based. Havana is also the nightclub onboard ms Ventura. Additional amenities include: Complimentary 24-hour Room-Service, Internet/WiFi access, supervised kids program, laundry/self-serve laundromats.

The Fincantieri Monfalcone -built MS Ventura is one of PO's biggest vessels and also one of the biggest UK-based passenger ships, with sistership Azura (both of the Grand-Class). The ship was christened by Helen Mirren (1945-born British actress) who also sailed on the Inaugural Cruise/maiden voyage on April 11, 2008.
P&O Ventura (Monfalcone shipyard/hull number 6132) is powered by Wartsila marine diesel engines (models 8ZAV40S and 8L46C) generating total power output 67,22 MW.
Besides being a huge vessel as size and passenger capacity , Ventura is also one of the most family-friendly UK ships. Family fun activities at dedicated facilities on board are: "The Reef" (with kids club programming), Noddy (character greetings), open-air kids playing areas, "Beachcomber" and "Laguna" (family pools), "The Beach House" (casual family restaurant for dinner) and Havana Lounge (evening family shows).
During the whole summer of 2014, for the first time, P&O operated Ventura with exclusively fly-cruises to the Mediterranean from the UK. During winter, the liner offers Caribbean cruises from homeport Bridgetown Barbados , also operated with fly-cruise deals from UK ( Southampton England ). P&O UK's "flight and cruise" deals to the Caribbean are additionally inclusive of discounted airfare to and from Barbados.
The ship's current Captain (Master) is Paul Brown.
MS Ventura refurbishments review
The ship's drydock in 2018 (March 13-27, done by Damen Shiprepairs in Brest France ) resulted in the following changes:
The onboard retail shopping was upgraded by refurbishing all retail shops and adding new brands. The 2-tier Arena Theatre received a large, wall-mounted LED screen (similar to that on Azura), as well as a new sound and light equipment. Two bar lounges (Tamarind Club and Havana) were renovated and redesigned.
All passenger cabins and most public areas (the Atrium, Spa and Salon complex, all restaurants, lounges, and bars) were renovated with new carpeting. The main walkway area received new tiling, new carpet, new furniture.
New retail brands were added to the onboard shopping options selling premium watches, handbags, cosmetics and perfumes, travel essentials. New is the Dufry store (travel retailer). All the shops were completely renovated. Among the newly added brands are BRICS (luggage, bags, Selfridges), Longines (Swiss hand-made watches), Olivia Burton (watches, V), Liu Jo (women's clothes, bags, shoes), Radley (designer leather handbags, purses, accessories), Cath Kidston (fashion, bags, gifts), Kipling (designer bags, backpacks, luggage, wallets, travel accessories). A new collection of British gins was also added. To the shops on Deck 7 was added a large glass display window.
During the drydock refit were also refurbished the Waterside (24-hour buffet restaurant) and The Beach House (Select Dining restaurant).
Dixons Travel shop (deck 7) sells the latest technology gadgets and electronic equipment. During the refurbishment, the store's size was increased and new products were added, including by the brands Amazon, Apple, Bose, Canon, Fitbit, GoPro). The Photo Now (digital screen) was moved to the aft.
During drydock 2018, on the boat were installed 2 scrubbers (reducing fuel emissions and energy consumption). The hull was water blasted and painted with a new type of silicone paint (improving fuel efficiency). Also repainted was the liner's superstructure. Maintenance works included the vessel's propulsion, stabilizers, some repairs.
The list of deck plan changes after the ship's 2013 drydock (at Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg Germany ) includes:
- (Deck 5) - new Atrium entertainment programme – now with a dance floor (also for lessons) and live band music at night. Internet Cafe was transformed into the Library, while the old library was refitted into a perfume shop.
- (Deck 6) - 18 new single cruise cabins, of which 12 oceanview and 6 Interior), at no single supplement rates.
- (Deck 7) - The Glass House (wine bar) replacing the Ramblas (Latin specialty restaurant)
- (Deck 7) - East (Asian specialty restaurant by Atul Kochhar, with new Southeast Asia menu.
- (Deck 17) - The Retreat (outdoor adults-only spa terrace).
- Better (shipwide) Wi-Fi coverage.
The best adults-only cruises to try if you can’t stand being around kids on vacation
What are the best adults-only cruises — the ones that not only ban kids but cater to grown-up tastes and interests?
You may be asking because you just spent time on a megaship where the kids took over the pools and hot tubs (not to mention the elevators), much to your chagrin. Or, you might be looking for a vacation with more lectures and less limbo, or perhaps a cruise that skews more R-rated than G.
The list of cruises for adults only is, alas, very short. Only a handful of cruise lines ban children from their ships and promise cruises for grown-ups — perhaps the most notable being cruise newcomer Virgin Voyages and fast-growing Viking .
The trend in recent years in cruising is, in fact, more family-focused, with more kids appearing on ships of all types. Indeed, some of the biggest, best-known cruise brands have gone full-bore after the family market , to the extent that the sun-soaked top decks of their ships sometimes can feel more like a scene out of "Daddy Day Care" than a blissful vacation retreat.
For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
Don't despair, though. Even as many lines double down on the family market, a small group of cruise operators remains all-in on the idea of adult-only cruises.
Here are our picks for the best adults-only cruise lines, with a grown-up vibe to boot.
Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line
Virgin Voyages
The much-ballyhooed new line from Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group has banned children under the age of 18 from its ships. It's part of an effort to create a hipper, more-sophisticated, adult-focused vibe that company leaders think is sorely lacking in the cruise world.
"We have done a ton of research really trying to create a sophisticated experience," Virgin Voyages CEO Tom McAlpin said in the days before the line's 2021 debut . "I've done some personal research. We found that when you put kids in the pool, they scream, and we don't want that."
Related: I've been on more than 150 cruise ships. Here's what I thought of Scarlet Lady
Virgin Voyages' first three adults-only cruise ships, the 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady and sister vessels Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady , cater to grown-ups looking for a decidedly adult sort of fun with such offerings as interactive dance parties and a drag queen performance. It also offers a karaoke lounge with pink-and-purple karaoke rooms and a tattoo parlor (read about how one of our staffers was among the first to get inked on board ).
What you won't find on the three ships (a fourth is due later this year) are waterslides, watery splash zones, teen lounges and all the other family-friendly features that are becoming so common on bigger ships.
To create an adults-only cruise experience, Virgin Voyages took a page from fast-growing Viking 's playbook. Viking's 12-ship ocean cruise division has banned children under the age of 18 since it debuted in 2015. In addition, its 80-ship river cruise division has had a minimum age limit for more than two decades. (Initially, the cut-off was age 12; as of 2019, that jumped to 18, too.)
Not that Virgin and Viking are anything alike. Virgin is designed to appeal to millennials and older travelers who want to party like they are millennials. Viking, by contrast, is the anti-millennial line.
Viking's target market is squarely in the 55-plus bracket. It zeroes in on that demographic with an upscale, destination-focused experience that is heavy on what the industry likes to call "enrichment" — onboard lectures and other learning opportunities. It also emphasizes tours focused on history and culture (with at least one free excursion in each port) and entertainment offerings that veer more toward string quartets than dancers in string bikinis.
"What we're looking to do is try not to be everything for everyone," Viking's executive vice president of marketing, Richard Marnell, told TPG. "We do not have a kids' program. What we have is . . . [an] immersive experience that is best suited for people that are intellectually curious."
P&O Cruises
This storied British line clearly sees the demand for adults-only cruise ships, but it isn't giving up on the family market, either. The line splits the difference between the two segments. Five of its seven vessels (Arvia, Iona, Britannia, Ventura and Azura) are marketed as "family-friendly" and open to passengers of all ages. The other two (Arcadia and Aurora) are reserved exclusively for adults.
Given that more than 95% of the Southampton, England-based cruise line's passengers are British, you'll probably want to be either British yourself or a major Anglophile to consider booking one of the latter two vessels. Sailing with P&O Cruises is a very British experience, something that becomes clear the moment you see its vessels. They feature hulls painted with massive Union Jacks.
In addition, you'll find quintessentially British offerings on board P&O Cruises ships, such as elaborate afternoon teas, quoits on the top deck and restaurant menus designed by chefs big in the United Kingdom, such as Marco Pierre White.
That said, if you're a Princess Cruises fan, you might feel right at home on a P&O Cruises ship. Nestled under the same corporate umbrella, the two brands are longtime sisters that have swapped ships back and forth (though Holland America fans might be interested to know that Arcadia actually shares a ship design with that line's Vista class).
For booking purposes, P&O Cruises considers anyone who will be 18 or older when sailing an adult.
Saga Cruises
Like P&O Cruises, Saga Cruises is a British line that has honed in on the business of offering voyages just for adults. But it goes way beyond what P&O Cruises or any other line does in shunning younger travelers. The minimum age at Saga Cruises isn't 18 or even 21 — it's 50.
That's right — you won't find a single millennial or even that many Generation Xers on board a Saga Cruises ship (at 58, even the oldest members of Generation X only make the cut-off by eight years). You will find a heck of a lot of baby boomers, many of them retired.
Saga Cruises operates just two ocean vessels, sailing exclusively out of the U.K., plus several river ships. Like P&O Cruises, it's a product that is probably best for British travelers or big-time Anglophiles.
Other adult-focused cruises
In addition to lines that ban passengers under the age of 18 outright, a number of cruise operators allow young children but get relatively few of them.
Examples include such upscale lines as Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Silversea Cruises and Seabourn , which cater heavily to an older crowd. Small-ship specialist Windstar Cruises allows tweens and teenagers on its six ships, but it doesn't allow any children under the age of 8.
Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, which sells both ocean and river cruises, traditionally discourages customers from bringing passengers under the age of 12 on vessels except during Christmas holiday sailings.
Also, the longer the cruise, the fewer children you will find. Book a two-plus-week sailing to a more exotic location, like Asia or South America, during the school year on a line like Holland America or Princess, and you'll share the ship predominantly with adults.

New to TTG?
P&o cruises in legal battle with passengers over sickness claims.
More than 80 P&O Cruises passengers are seeking compensation from the line after falling ill while sailing on Ventura earlier this year.
Passengers reported suffering from gastrointestinal symptoms during and after their sailings onboard the 3,078-passenger ship in May.
In an effort to bring down "elevated" levels of acute gastroenteritis, the line introduced additional protocols, including delaying embarkation by up to seven hours ahead of Ventura’s 25 May departure .
However, affected passengers have since instructed law firms Hudgells, Irwin Mitchell and JPS Walker Solicitors to seek compensation from P&O Cruises.
TTG understands more than 50 passengers are being represented by Hudgells, 27 by Irwin Mitchell and a further six by JPS Walker.
Anne Thomson, senior litigation executive at Hudgells, said: “Many trips this year onboard Ventura have been ruined. I am now asking for an investigation into how they came to be ill. I will also be asking that they are fully refunded the cost of their holiday and additional damages for the illness, pain and suffering they experienced.”
Jatinder Paul, a partner at Irwin Mitchell, said some of the passengers onboard affected sailings were taken to hospital in Spain. "We’re now investigating further to secure our clients the answers they deserve on how they came to fall so ill,” Paul added.
A JPS Walker spokesperson said: “Most of the claimants we’re representing were vomiting, had diarrhoea and a cough. I would rate our chances [of winning] as high. The cruise line is bang to rights.”
A P&O Cruises spokesperson stressed that while the line would not comment on ongoing cases, it works closely with global and regional authorities.
“We have approved, recognised and proven protocols that are in place throughout every cruise to uphold the health and wellbeing of all guests and crew onboard,” the spokesperson added.

My 21-year-old godson just died a horrible, senseless death. He is not a statistic
I recently celebrated my godson’s 21st birthday in June at Carson’s Ribs in downtown Chicago . We all laughed and joked as Christion Tucker tried red wine for the first time. Last week Christion was to begin his job at Project H.O.O.D., the non-profit I lead that works every day to build up our community by reducing violence.
Then, I got a call two weeks ago on a Sunday in August from his mother and the news shocked me. Christion had been shot multiple times while sitting in his car and he was no longer alive. As of now, we do not know why he was killed. All we know is that his death was senseless.
He was the last kid you would expect this to happen to. He was not a statistic. He was not "oh-he’s-from-the-South-Side-that’s-why." He came from a good family that loved him dearly. He was a good soul with so much to give to this world.
IN MY CITY, THE NAME 'O BLOCK' CONTINUES TO LIVE ON IN INFAMY. IT'S TIME TO CHANGE THAT
I met Christion through another family tragedy. In 2018, Christion’s 15-year-old brother, Chauncy, died in a crash involving a snow plow. This tore the family up.
I tried to be there as much as I could for them. Christion and I just began developing a deeper and deeper connection. It was organic — like we were meant to walk this earth together. When his mother, Shenee Benson, asked me to be Christion’s godfather I was honored.
Christion was very close to his younger brother, and I’ve seen how tragedies like these can lead an individual down the wrong path. They begin to question the world, lose faith, and make bad decisions. But Christion didn’t. Instead, he tattooed his brother’s name on his forearm in remembrance and went to work on his future.
He finished high school and went on to junior college where he played basketball on the school's team. He also had a passion for music. Most of all, he just had an air about him that made people like and trust him, especially young people. That is why I was excited for him to begin work at Project H.O.O.D. where I knew he would make a significant impact.

Now, I feel nothing but a profound sense of loss, a void. Every death is hard, but this one hurt especially. Part of me wonders if I failed him. I know how dangerous this neighborhood can be and was I vigilant enough? You can’t bubble wrap these kids through life but could I have done more?
I will never know the answer, but I know his life on earth meant something. His mom now must live without two wonderful sons. The world is not better off, having lost these two lives. But, at the same time, we must make both of these lives matter and count.
I will admit I had flashes of quitting after I heard the news about Christion. The pain of dealing with these deaths is excruciating. I often wonder why and what for? What meaning is to be found?
As I move forward in life, I vow to carry Christion's voice with me as I mentor each youth toward the American Dream . Maybe he did truly start his work with me as the plan was — I just didn’t expect it in this form.
