I am writing this review of Dark Star Orchestra because I am a 66 year old "newbie" who just "discovered" this amazing band after a great friend recommended them to me just a few weeks ago.

I have to admit that being involved in one of the BEST GRATEFUL DEAD COVER BANDS, was a highlight to my life!!

I mean, what an incredible night!!

The band played all the songs that I love from the early days of the "Dead" and did so with such style and enthusiasm that I was left in amazement! They were so incredibly great from the first note they played, all through the night!! I am particularly impressed by the lead guitarist and the impressive keyboard playing.

And the fantastic people I met last night. I talked to so many people from age 21 to 80 years old, and every one, was fun, charming, engaging and thoroughly entertaining. I wished I would have given my two new "friends" Nick and Nate my card to keep in contact, but that didn't happen.

It reminded me of the Dead concerts I attended in the 60's and 70's, with so much fun and laughter.

I am going to follow this band and plan on attending all their concerts within 500 miles of my home, no matter where they are. I am a BELIEVER!!!

It is a massive gamble to establish your band as a tribute band, because it can attract people who will criticize to no end. However, Dark Star Orchestra has managed to turn themselves into one of the best Grateful Dead tribute bands, having acquired enough fans to tour the world. Playing together for over seventeen years, they have even had original members of The Grateful Dead like bassist Phil Lesh and vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux join them on stage.

Their fans include a slew of people, mostly original Grateful Dead fans who have brought along a younger generation to appreciate the music that they have been so fond of. The band seems very mellow, and their show almost feels like a bunch of friends who decided to jam together and just so happen to be on a stage that you can watch them from. The vocal harmonies by John Kadlecik and Lisa Mackey are executed pretty damn close to the original. What’s great about viewing their live shows is that no matter what age you are, you can appreciate the fact that you are transported to another time, and as the music surrounds you, everything you currently stress about is melted away.

The band certainly was good, but too little played from the Dead's vast musical library for my taste. Highlights of the show, sadly too few, were the Weather Report Suite (executed beautifully) into Let it Grow and Unbroken Chain. Unbroken Chain is a complicated tune that the band flawlessly presented to the fans who at that point had been anxiously awaiting some more depth. while it was cool to get some B-sides, like the Keith Godchaux tune Let Me Sing Your Blues Away, the fans were left scratching their heads when the Brent song from Built To Last was played. Did anybody ever buy that album? I remember seeing it in the cut out bin for 99c. Pride of Cucamonga was a nice touch and the Ripple finale was clearly welcomed by the crowd, but having just seen the Dear Jerry Show where that was the finale, I personally would have liked to see something different.

The format gave the band a chance to be more self indulgent exploring new songs never played by the Dead, but guys, you are a Dead Cover band. That is what I as a fan want to hear.

I've had the privlege of seeing Dark Star Orchestra quite a few times. I try to always see them when they are in the area. They are the best Grateful Dead cover band in my opinion. They're unique in the fact that they recreate an actual Greatful Dead show that was done in their extensive career. I've never had a bad show, NIR have ever witnessesed anyone else having a bad time! I recommend everyone see them at least one time. Guaranteed, it won't be the last! And, their sound is spot on. You'll feel as,if you're at an actual Grateful Dead show. The tickets are very affordable, and believe me, you'll get a bang for your buck! Check them out for yourself,I'm positive you'll agree!

Show was great musicaly, the venue Maine State Pier needs to do away with the fence thru the middle og crowd, i guess one side is drinking free but you have to go to thedrinking side for water and you have to go to the sober side for bathroom, all this side switching occurs at one small break in the fence. i felt like a sardine at times. parking was wayyyy to much.

the music was excellent as usual. the band played for 3.5 hours and the crowd was rocking. dso always mixes up the set list and last night's arrangement did not disappoint. the only concern was the venue... the westcott needs to do some more cleaning and add additional restrooms!!

These guys always bring it. The energy was great, the show was spectacular (4-5-82 Spectrum), and a bonus White Rabbit for a second encore made my night. The venue was really nice, small, intimate, with great acoustics.

Awesome show as usual. Made it front center on the rail first set. Keep rocking, I'll keep showing up. Also I parked near your coach, nice digs. It looks comfortable. Let me know if you need a driver.

Dark Star Orchestra Unveil Four-Night Residency with Third-Annual New Year’s Series at The Capitol Theatre

Dark Star Orchestra Unveil Four-Night Residency with Third-Annual New Year’s Series at The Capitol Theatre

Dark Star Orchestra look forward today with the unveiling of the band’s winter residency at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, N.Y. Segmented across a November weekend at New Year’s Eve series, these four new dates at the hallowed jam haven arrive as the first and last performances of the premiere Grateful Dead cover ensemble’s new fall tour, giving the fans something to be excited about between the final push of the summer festival circuit and the band’s highly anticipated Jam in the Sand getaway.

Dark Star Orchestra’s newly announced series begins on Nov. 15 and 16, when the Dead disciples and road warriors will bring their acclaimed, immersive homage to psychedelia’s forebearers to the Cap once more. Just over a month after the lights go down, the seven-piece ensemble will ride again for a New Year’s Eve celebration on Dec. 30 and 31. With this latter pair, the band will conclude its four-night residency and ring in the new year alongside the Port Chester crowd for the third consecutive year.

On the announcement of Dark Star Orchestra’s return to The Capitol Theatre, the band’s members have shared their excitement for the residency. “In my opinion, The Cap is the most iconic east coast Dead oriented venue,” offers keyboardist Rob Barraco. “Peter Shapiro has put together a temple to all things Grateful Dead housed in a holy place of Dead history. The production is second to none. DSO treasures our shows there. New Year’s is becoming a hallowed tradition.”

Vocalist Lisa Mackey recalls her earliest appearances with the band at the venue, writing, “I guess we’ve been coming to the Cap since around 2010. The venue has great energy and lovely personnel who make our visits and performances as lovely as can be. Personally, The Cap is a milestone for us, and every time I walk through the door it’s like the first time I walked through the door…kind of like ‘You made it…you’re in the big-time now.’”

Drummer Rob Koritz concurs, writing, “We have played The Cap nearly 30 times since Peter re-opened it and it is always special. The history of the building, knowing that the Dead and so many other legendary groups graced the very same stage always gives us a little bit of a boost. Everyone there treats us so well.  Peter, the staff, the stage crew and of course, the fans. I think they anticipate it is going to be a special performance and their energy is definitely felt on the stage. I’m really excited that we will be there for 2 two night runs before the end of the year.”

Shapiro, owner and operator of the venue and engineer behind its renovation and current prominence, also commented on the landmark series. “My history with Dark Star goes back nearly 30 years to hosting legendary Tuesday night Zen Tricksters shows at Wetlands,” he recalls. “I am super psyched to have Dark Star back at The Capitol for a run of shows. They are standard bearers of this music and The Capitol Theatre loves to breathe their Dark Star air.”

An artist pre-sale for Dark Star Orchestra’s four-night winter residency at The Capitol Theatre begins tomorrow Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. ET. A venue presale will follow on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET, before the general on-sale launch this Friday, Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. ET. Fans can find tickets and more information at thecapitoltheatre.com . For details on the band’s broader fall tour, visit https://www.darkstarorchestra.net/tour/ .

Music | Keeping the Dead alive: ‘It’s almost like it changes your DNA’

Grateful dead tribute band dark star orchestra still going strong.

Keyboardist Rob Barraco and the Dark Star Orchestra will re-create a particularly famous Grateful Dead show at the Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley on July 13.

That was the date when the famed Bay Area psychedelic rock act performed at what is often referred to as its favorite venue — the Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley — and something quite dramatic happened during the encore.

Having just completed two sets of music, thrilling their loyal Deadheads with such classics as “Dire Wolf,” “Scarlet Begonias” and “Stella Blue,” Jerry Garcia and company then reappeared to play the group’s trippy signature number — “Dark Star” — as an encore.

While they were playing it, as legend has it, a shooting star sailed across the Berkeley sky and further blew everybody’s minds. Oh, and did I mention that the whole thing happened on Friday the 13th?

Exactly 40 years later, Grateful Dead tribute act Dark Star Orchestra is set to re-create (and, as they are known to do, re-imagine) that legendary show for fans at the same venue on July 13.

Melvin Seals and JGB are also on the bill.

The show also celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Rex Foundation, the Dead’s charitable organization that was founded in 1983, and hosted its first benefit shows in 1984. Showtime is 5:30 p.m. and tickets start at $78.15 (subject to change), apeconcerts.com .

I recently had the chance to talk about the big show with Dark Star Orchestra keyboardist Rob Barraco, who has also performed in such GD-related projects as The Dead, Phil Lesh & Friends and the Zen Tricksters.

Q: Good to chat with you, Rob. How does it feel to have been jamming in Dark Star Orchestra now for over 19 years?

A: It’s quite the honor to be able to play with most of the same people for all these years. They become your family and you get to know them intimately — and musically intimately. It actually turns out that we’ve developed our own language when we play. It’s pretty cool.

Q: You joined the band some eight years after it started in 1997. How did that all come about?

A: Their keyboard player Scott Larned passed away in April 2005 and their manager called me up on the phone and was like, “Look, these guys have a month-long tour coming up. They are in no position to audition anybody. We know that if we ask you to come onboard for that tour, they won’t need to rehearse because you know the material so well.” And I agreed to do it. And I really haven’t looked back.

Q: There are no original members in the band at this point, right?

A: The only (remaining) person — who joined the band two shows in — is Lisa Mackey. Other than that, both our drummers are the oldest ones in the band. But none of them are the originals.

Q: Back when the band was first starting out, do you think anybody had any idea just how long Dark Star could last?

A: No. When John Kadlecik started the project with Scott Larned, I think their thought was, “Yeah, we’ll play a couple of shows here and there.” And it just turned into a juggernaut, because this community just loves this music and they just want as much as they can get — doesn’t matter who’s playing it.

They found a niche — re-creating shows — and it caught on.

Q: Perfect segue, my friend. Tell me about the show you will be re-creating at the Greek and what made it so special.

A: Somehow, (the Grateful Dead) ended up encoring with “Dark Star” — which, as far I am concerned, is their coolest tune — and it hadn’t been played in years.

The lore is that there was an unbelievable shooting star that happened when they started playing (“Dark Star”), so it made it really special.

It’s a show that’s been talked about on and on through the years.

And we’re playing it on the 40th anniversary of that show.

Q: I’m looking at the Dark Star Orchestra Wikipedia page and it says that the band played its 2,000th show way back in 2011. So, that was 13 years ago.

A: We’re way into the 3,000s now. We have surpassed the Dead (show total) by quite a bit.

Q: Wow. Isn’t that a trip that you’ve now played more shows than the Grateful Dead?

A: Of course, it is. Like I said, I don’t think anybody envisioned such a feat.

Q: Dark Star Orchestra is best known for re-creating specific shows in concert. Yet, there’s another side to the band as well, right?

A: If you took a week, we probably do three to four re-creations. The other shows, we call them elective sets — and we make up our own setlists. And those are really cool because we juxtapose years that had nothing to do with each other. Like, I have to play and sing three different ways in a show, which is a great challenge for me — makes me a better musician. We put together setlists of songs that the Dead never really put together. And we try to make it work. And, most of the time, it does.

Q: Of course, Dark Star Orchestra was one of the first nationally known Grateful Dead tribute acts. But it just amazes me how many others are out there now — they’re everywhere.

A: I was in Dead cover bands in the ‘70s. I was in Dead cover bands in the ‘80s. I eventually found my way to playing with Phil (Lesh) and it was while I was playing with Phil that I got to talk to people all over the country. And that’s when I came to the realization that every town has a Dead band. Some of them have multiple Dead bands — Portland, Maine, has like three Dead bands. It’s so insane.

But it doesn’t surprise me anymore. I have realized that this community is its own thing — and it can keep going in perpetuity.

Once you plug into it, it’s part of you. It’s almost like it changes your DNA.
