How to Uninstall Safari on Mac

Avatar photo

Uninstalling Safari can seem necessary if you are encountering browser issues , slowdowns, or crashing . However, unless you have an older Mac, it might be more trouble than it is worth. So, is it even possible?

delete safari on mac

Safari is one of the applications that come preinstalled on your Mac. It is also one of the applications that is managed and updated through macOS.

This means that it is subject to protection from what Apple calls the System Integrity Protection (SIP) . SIP is one of the security features implemented on your Mac to protect from unauthorized alterations to the software or unauthorized executions of new codes that could damage your existing software.

SIP is one of the security features that we all know and love. We may not understand how they do it exactly, but this is one of the many reasons why Macs are considered so secure.

But if you’re keen on uninstalling Safari on your Mac, let’s get into it and see what we can do!

Table of Contents

Key Takeaways

What you need to know first, uninstall or turn off extensions, delete all data – clear history, delete all data – clear cache.

Disable SIP

Delete Safari Application and Associated Files

Re-enable sip, reinstalling macos (big sur and previous macos), switching to a different web browser, final thoughts.

  • Macs that still have macOS Big Sur and earlier installed can uninstall Safari on Mac. However, this requires disabling System Integrity Protection (SIP) . SIP is designed to keep your Mac safe from malware or other changes to software.
  • Macs with more recent software, such as the latest Sonoma , Ventura , or Monterey , are not able to uninstall Safari at all, even with disabling SIP.
  • There are still options to help clear the storage space taken up by Safari and to increase the speed, such as disabling extensions and clearing browsing data.
  • Oftentimes, switching to another browser, such as Google Chrome or Firefox , is a better idea than trying to uninstall Safari completely.

Some of the older macOS do allow you to uninstall Safari, but even if you have the ability, I would recommend proceeding with caution. However, if Safari has become corrupted, then trying to uninstall it may be the correct course of action for you.

Note : Even if you have Big Sur or previous macOS on your computer, removing any application that is under protection from SIP can be detrimental to your Mac. For the best results, you should try to clean up Safari first, by removing extensions and clearing your browsing data.

For Ventura, Monterey, or Newer macOS

Apple changed Ventura, Monterey, and their newer macOS to no longer allow you to uninstall Safari and other applications that are preinstalled on your Mac even if you disable SIP .

If you have one of these macOS’ or you find yourself (rightfully) hesitant to fully uninstall Safari, these are items that may help you to speed up Safari or still clear some storage that is related to Safari.

Extensions, while they can be fun and helpful, can significantly slow down the speed of your web browser. If you are finding that Safari is running extremely slowly, and that is why you were originally thinking about uninstalling it, then I would suggest trying this method!

Step 1: With Safari Open, click the Safari Menu and Settings… .

delete safari on mac

Step 2: Click the Extensions tab at the top. Use the checkboxes on the left to enable or disable each extension (mine are all disabled – when they are enabled, you will see a checkmark in the box). Or, if you would like to uninstall the extension completely, click uninstall under the individual extension.

Disabling the extensions will prevent them from running in the background, which will help the speed of your Safari, especially if you have a lot of extensions or have some that may have some that require a lot of processing power or RAM to run properly.

If you were looking to save storage space on your Mac by uninstalling Safari, then this might help. Safari itself does not require a lot of storage on your Mac. The related data, however, is where you begin to start to see that storage build-up.

By deleting all of your data, you are deleting history, Cookies, saved passwords, and other saved information on Safari. These items will be over the next few sections.

With Safari open, click the Safari menu at the top of your screen and select Clear History from the drop-down menu .

delete safari on mac

Choose Clear All History (or only more recent history if you prefer) and hit Clear History again to confirm.

delete safari on mac

Under Safari settings (reachable using the same steps as above), in the Advanced Tab, make sure Show features for web developers is checked.

delete safari on mac

With the above checked, you should see a Develop menu. Click Empty Caches from the drop-down .

delete safari on mac

For Big Sur and Previous macOS

Just because you have Big Sur or older macOS, doesn’t mean that you should immediately decide to uninstall Safari. The other options above may be more worthwhile if you are only seeing performance problems with Safari.

If there is some sort of corruption with your Safari, then this may be a valid option. Either way, be sure to backup your Mac prior to following these steps . Although losing data is unlikely if all goes correctly, there is a possibility of damaging your OS through these steps. Please proceed with caution.

First, you’ll need to disable SIP. To do so, take the following steps:

Boot in Recovery Mode – Apple Silicon Macs only

  • Start with your Mac turned off completely.
  • Press and Hold the power button until the startup options appear
  • Enter your administrator password as required and follow the onscreen instructions

Boot in Recovery Mode – Intel Macs only

  • Turn off or restart your Mac
  • When your Mac is turning back on, press and hold the Command-R keys.
  • When your Mac starts, you can release the keys and enter the administrator password as required.
  • Open the terminal in Recovery Mode
  • Enter the Command: csrutil disable
  • Press Enter
  • Restart your Mac as Normal

In Finder, find the Safari application, and drag and drop it into the trash.

Delete the Safari system files by using Finder to navigate through the folders and find any files that have Safari in the name. Be sure to check the following folders (and others):

/Users/ YourUsername /Library/

/Users/ YourUsername /Library/ApplicationSupport/

/Users/ YourUsername /Library/Caches/

/Users/ YourUsername /Library/Preferences/

/Users/ YourUsername /Library/Saved Application State/

/var/folders/

  • Boot in Recovery Mode as described above
  • Open Terminal
  • Enter the Following Command: csrutil enable
  • Restart your Mac

If you find yourself running into problems after uninstalling Safari or deciding that you would like to reinstall it, then you will need to completely reinstall macOS.

We recommend backing up the information on your Mac prior to a reinstall of macOS. While data loss is rare, it can occur, and it is better to be on the safe side than accidentally lose all of your information.

Boot in Recovery Mode as described above.

Choose the Reinstall macOS option. Follow the instructions onscreen.

If Safari is not working properly, you can skip the hassle of uninstalling it and simply switch to an alternative web browser. If you don’t use Safari, you can leave it alone, untouched in your Applications folder. The good news is that there are plenty of options for different browsers.

Google Chrome is an extremely popular browser, and it is the one I use personally. You can download it for free and connect it to your Google account to sync your favorites, contacts, calendar, and other Google apps. The sync feature allows you to use the same bookmarks and saved information across multiple computers.

Conversely, Firefox is another popular browser. You can download it for free, and it offers much the same functionality as Safari and Google Chrome.

No matter which browser you choose, switching away from Safari is much easier and less time-consuming than uninstalling it entirely.

This article explained why Safari is a difficult application to uninstall from Mac, if it is even possible at all. The latest macOS releases protect you from altering the software and don’t allow you to uninstall Safari at all. The others, allow you to do so when you disable SIP.

Disabling SIP can be very dangerous, so be careful if this is the path that you ultimately decide to take. Be sure to have your computer backed up to prevent any problems.

Ultimately, it is typically easier to just switch to using another web browser like Google Chrome or Firefox.

How to remove Safari from Mac

Safari is a default Apple browser for macOS and iOS systems. Although Safari is a fast web browser, you may prefer using another browser, for example, Google Chrome. If you do not use it at all, you may want to uninstall Safari since it is just taking up useless disk space. In this article, we will show you how to delete Safari on Mac.

Uninstalling Safari on a Mac

Can you uninstall Safari?

How to remove safari from mac with terminal, how to uninstall safari extensions, how to reset safari.

Important notes about uninstalling Safari on Mac

  • Generally, you don’t need to uninstall Safari from your Mac. If you don’t use it, it doesn’t accumulate caches or other service files and as a result, it doesn’t take up much space on your drive.
  • If you uninstall Safari, it can be restored when you update or upgrade your macOS. Moreover, on some systems, Safari can be restored after enabling SIP.
  • Uninstalling the default applications like Safari from a Mac can damage your system. You should remove them only if you understand the macOS file system and ensure that it will not affect your Mac badly.
  • If you want to uninstall Safari just because you need more free space on your Mac, read our article “ How to clean up a Mac .” There are some more effective ways to recover space on your drive.
  • This guide doesn’t work for macOS Monterey and Ventura. Since macOS the version 12, Apple doesn’t allow to uninstall Safari even when SIP is disabled. On the newest versions of macOS, the default Apple applications, including Safari, are located on a protected area of the disk even when you turn off SIP.

When you try to remove Safari to Trash, you will receive this message from macOS: “Safari app can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by macOS.”

message that safari cannot be removed

Why does this happen? The fact is, according to Apple System Integrity Protection (SIP) , you are unable to modify pre-installed applications and some system folders on Macs. This inability to remove such items in the standard way is envisaged by Apple to be a safeguard against inexperienced users accidentally damaging the viability of the system. This is very important because, even if Safari can always be restored by downloading from the App Store, with other applications it’s a little more complicated. However, there is a way to delete Safari on Mac using the Terminal command line. For this, you need to disable the System Integrity Protection.

Before providing the steps to uninstall Safari on Mac, once again we would like to remind you that, if you’re not a computer geek and are not exactly sure what to do, we strongly advise you not to delete Safari. By uninstalling the browser, you will save not more than 150 megabytes, which hardly justifies deleting it.

However, if you are certain you want to remove Safari from Mac, read on. Please note that all actions for removing embedded programs are completely at your own risk. Before removing Safri, you should disable SIP – System Integrity Protection

Part 1. Disable Mac System Integrity Protection

  • Restart your Mac holding the Command+R keyboard shortcut while the reboot is in progress.
  • Your Mac will show you are in the recovery mode.
  • Go to the Menu bar, click on Utilities and select Terminal .

utilities menu in recovery mode

  • Paste in Terminal window this command: csrutil disable
  • Click the Return (Enter) key. This will disable your SIP.

terminal-command to disable sip

  • Restart your Mac.
  • Login to your system using your admin account.

That’s it! Now you have System Integrity Protection disabled, and now you can remove the Safari browser app. For the next steps you need to have administrator rights.

Part 2. Remove Safari from Mac

  • Launch the Terminal program from Launchpad again.
  • Enter the following command: sudo mount -uw /System/Applications
  • Click the Enter key.
  • Enter your password when asked.

terminal with sudo mount command

  • Now you have mounted the /System/Applications folder to have Read & Write permission.
  • Type the command cd /Applications/
  • Click the Enter key. The applications’ directory will be shown.

terminal with command to show app directory

  • On macOS 10.14: sudo rm -rf Safari.app/
  • On macOS 10.15: sudo rm -rf ~/mount/Applications/Safari.app

Please be careful: when you remove items via Terminal, the system does not ask for confirmation.

After you have removed Safari, don’t forget to enable back the SIP. For this, again restart your Mac in a recovery mode (press Command+R while rebooting), and enter the csrutil enable command into Terminal.

* Also read our previous article How to uninstall default Apple apps .

In case you want to uninstall Safari just because the browser is very slow, don’t rush to get rid of Safari. Usually, extensions slow down your browser. So first we recommend that you uninstall Safari extensions.

Here is how to uninstall Safari extensions on Mac:

  • Open the Safari browser.
  • Go to the Menu bar and click Safari → select Settings .

safari menu with Settings command selected

  • Switch to the Extensions tab . Here you can take a look at all your extensions and click the Uninstall button to remove these extensions.

Safari settings showing the Extensions tab

Once again, we would like to note that removing default Apple applications may damage the system. If you want to uninstall Safari due to browser issues and errors, we recommend that you just reset Safari. You can easily do this with a free software tool App Cleaner & Uninstaller .

  • Launch App Cleaner & Uninstaller.
  • Go to the app’s Preferences and enable displaying system applications.

  • Press Command+R to rescan your apps and switch to Expert mode
  • Find Safari in the list of apps and right-click on it → choose Select Service Files for Removal

  • Click the Remove button and confirm the removal.

That’s all.

Thus, if you want to uninstall apps to free up more disk space, we recommend uninstalling only third-party applications and clearing their service files. Use App Cleaner & Uninstaller for these tasks.

App Cleaner & Uninstaller helps to completely remove apps , delete all their support files, find the leftovers of already removed apps, manage extensions, startup programs , and even change default apps you use to open different types of files.

How to delete Safari on MacOS and iOS

How to delete Safari on MacOS and iOS

Apple-based devices ship with the Safari web browser preinstalled on them. Rather than just blithely accept it, some users prefer to get rid of Safari and start afresh. If you’re one of them, read on and we’ll tell you exactly how to delete Safari on MacOS and iOS. Be warned though, it’s not an easy process because of the way Apple builds Safari into the operating system.

Although Safari works fine as a browser, you may have a preference for a different, more secure browser. Perhaps one that offers more customization options or that doesn’t track you by default.

Why you may struggle to fully delete Safari from a Mac

Macintosh computers make use of a technology called System Integrity Protection (SIP) that makes fully deleting Safari difficult. SIP appeared initially in MacOS X El Capitan (version 10.11). SIP limits the ability to make changes to the root account on the Mac, all in an effort to protect the Mac from potential hackers and malware.

This technology also greatly complicates the process of making edits to or deleting certain macOS files, including some files related to Safari.

If you want to fully delete Safari on a Macintosh computer, you will have to turn off SIP temporarily. This can be a challenging process. We will lay out the steps to follow for this process, but keep in mind that it is not necessarily a process that novices will want to tackle. Making an error with these types of files could damage the computer significantly.

How to delete Safari on your Macbook

How to delete safari on your Macbook

We will lay out the steps required to completely uninstall Safari. However, this involves making use of the Terminal window, which is a text-based command window, and turning off SIP. You also will need administrative access on the Mac to perform this step.

Users without experience with Terminal or who are nervous about making these kinds of changes to the system may want to skip ahead for advice on blocking or hiding Safari without completely deleting it.

Open Terminal in Recovery Mode

Mac recovery mode

Start the Mac in Recovery mode when you turn on the computer. Immediately press and hold the Command key followed by the R key during bootup. Release the keys when you see an Apple icon or a startup screen appear on the display. You may have to enter an administrator password to continue.

In the Utilities menu, select and launch Terminal.

Disable SIP

In the Terminal window, type csrutil disable and hit the Return key . Restart the computer in normal mode.

Delete Safari

Delete Safari

After the computer restarts, open Terminal again. Start by clicking on the Finder icon. Open the Applications folder, followed by the Utilities folder. Double-click on the Terminal icon.

At the prompt, type sudo mount -uw /system/applications at the prompt and press the Return key . This command allows you to edit files in the Applications folder. You may need to enter an administrator password.

At the prompt, type cd /applications/ and press the Return key . The prompt should change to show that you are working in the Applications folder.

Then type sudo rm -r safari.app and press the Return key . This should delete the Safari browser app.

You then will want to re-enable SIP as quickly as possible. If you leave SIP disabled and if you do not have antivirus protection installed, you could leave your Mac’s system files open to hacking . Even though some people believe Mac computers do not need antivirus protection because they are not susceptible to viruses, this is not true. Macs need antivirus protection .

To re-enable SIP, start the Mac in Recovery mode, as we discussed earlier. Open the Terminal window from the Utilities menu again.

At the prompt, type csrutil enable and press the Return key . Restart the computer normally.

Options other than deleting Safari on a Mac

If you don’t feel comfortable deleting Safari because of having to work with system files, you can take a few other steps to minimize Safari’s impact on your Mac.

Block Safari

Block Safari

Mac has a built-in feature called Screen Time that will limit the performance of apps on the Mac. You can use Screen Time to block Safari by not allowing anyone to use it.

Click the Apple menu, followed by System Preferences . Then click on Screen Time . Click Options , followed by Turn On . Click on the Content & Privacy Restrictions tab, and then select Apps . Remove the check mark from the box next to Safari and save your choices.

Deleting Safari-related files in an older MacOS

If you are using a Macintosh operating system that’s older than OS X El Capitan , which is when SIP began appearing, you can attempt to delete most of the files associated with Safari manually. This doesn’t completely delete every Safari-related file, however.

Click on Finder and delete any Safari-associated files from the following folders (while replacing [your-name] with the personalized name associated with your Mac):

  • /users/[your-name]/library/
  • /users/[your-name]/library/address book plug-ins/
  • /users/[your-name]/library/application support/crash report/
  • /users/[your-name]/library/application support/crashreporter/
  • /users/[your-name]/library/caches/
  • /users/[your-name]/library/preferences/
  • /users/[your-name]/library/saved application state/

You may want to empty the trash can or recycle bin to complete the process. You can place the Safari shortcut icon into the trash can or recycle bin too.

Use third-party software to delete Safari from a Mac

As another option, you can make use of third-party software to delete apps that Apple builds into the Mac, such as Safari. You may have to purchase the third-party software, but it can delete the apps faster than what you may be able to do on your own. Some uninstaller apps for Mac include:

How to disable Safari from mobile iOS devices

Disable Safari from mobile

The Safari app is built into the iOS on an iPad or iPhone as well, and you cannot completely remove it. You don’t have the option of editing system files on the iOS mobile device without jailbreaking, which is beyond the scope of this article.

You can hide Safari from view (or disable it) and remove the data associated with it on the iPhone, though. These steps then will make it difficult for someone else to access your data related to Safari. These steps also should free up some storage space on your mobile device.

Delete your browsing history

Before hiding/disabling Safari, you should remove your saved settings within the app, including removing any of your search history and login data.

On the iOS mobile device, tap Settings . Scroll down and tap Safari . On the next screen, tap Clear History and Website Data . You have to verify your choice by tapping the Clear History and Data button that appears on the bottom of the screen.

Use Screen Time to disable Safari

As we described earlier with hiding Safari on a Mac, you can use Screen Time on the iPhone or iPad to disable Safari.

Tap Settings and then tap Screen Time . On the next screen, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions . On the following screen, slide the Content & Privacy Restrictions button to the right to make it green. Then tap on Allowed Apps .

On the next screen, scroll down until you see Safari. Slide the button next to Safari to the left to remove the green color.

This will remove the Safari icon from the display screen for mobile device, making it inaccessible.

If you ever want to make the Safari icon visible again and to begin using it again, follow the same steps listed in this section, but move the slider button next to Safari to the right to make it green again.

Deleting Safari FAQs

What are some options to replace the safari browser.

Some potential web browser alternatives you can use on Apple devices instead of Safari include:

  • DuckDuckGo (iOS mobile version only)
  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge

If privacy is important to you, we’d recommend opting for either DuckDuckGo or Brave. Avoid Microsoft Edge as it includes un-removable trackers that share device information and browsing data.

What will I lose if I uninstall Safari?

If you have passwords and bookmarks saved as part of your Safari installation, you would lose this information. If you installed extensions as part of Safari, you would lose these too. Make sure to make a note of login credentials before removing Safari.

Should I uninstall Safari from Windows?

There’s no need, because Apple no longer supports a version of the Safari web browser for Windows, Linux, or other operating systems. Safari only is available for MacOS and iOS. Apple has not made a Windows version of Safari for a decade, so, unless you have an extremely old Windows computer, you will have no opportunity to delete Safari.

If I decide to keep Safari, how can I make it safer?

Although Safari offers a Private Mode, which prevents tracking cookies and other identifiers being stored on the browser. The safest way to operate is to use Private mode in combination with a VPN that works with Safari . The VPN will encrypt the data going back and forth through the Safari browser, making your browsing session much safer. Select a VPN that has an app designed specifically to work with the MacOS and iOS for the best results.

How to Easily Remove & Reinstall Safari on Mac OS

Safari is the default web browser for Mac users. It’s fast, secure, and easy to use. But sometimes you may want to uninstall Safari from your Mac and reinstall it. This can be due to performance issues, or you may simply want a clean slate. Whatever the reason, here’s how to remove Safari from your Mac and reinstall it.

First, make sure you have a backup of all your data before you start making any changes. Deleting Safari can cause damage to your operating system and could lead to data loss if something goes wrong.

To delete Safari from your Mac, open the Terminal app by searching for it in Spotlight or navigating to Applications/Utilities folder. In the Terminal window, type cd /Applications/. You will be asked for your device password; enter it and then type sudo rm -rf Safari.app/. This command will delete all files related to Safari from your Mac.

Consequences of Deleting Safari From Mac

If you delete Safari from your Mac, it could cause serious damage to the operating system and the overall stability of your device. It is not recommended to delete Safari, as it is deeply embedded in the OS, and deleting it could lead to unexpected errors and performance issues. Additionally, without Safari, you will not be able to browse the web or access any websites. If you are having trouble with Safari, it is recommended that you reset it or reinstall the app instead of deleting it.

Resetting Safari on a Mac

To completely reset Safari on your Mac, you will need to follow these steps: 1. First, open Safari and click the Safari menu in the upper left corner of your screen. 2. Select Preferences from the dropdown menu to open the Preferences window. 3. In the General tab, click the Reset button at the bottom of the window. 4. A confirmation dialog box will appear – make sure to select Remove All Website Data and then click Reset in this dialog box to confirm that you want to reset Safari on your Mac. 5. Finally, close out all Safari windows and reopen them for your reset changes to take effect.

Reinstalling Safari on Mac

Yes, you can reinstall Safari on Mac. To do this, go to the App Store and search for “Safari” in the search bar. Select the latest version of Safari and then click “Get” or “Download” to install it. Alternatively, you can also use Software Update (in System Preferences) to update Safari if you already have it installed.

Can Safari Be Uninstalled From a Mac?

Yes, Safari can be uninstalled on Mac, but it’s not as straightforward as uninstalling other applications. To do so, you must first disable System Integrity Protection which is a security feature built into the macOS operating system. This can be done through the Console or with the help of third-party apps. However, we don’t recommend disabling System Integrity Protection unless you have a good understanding of computer systems and are confident in making these changes.

Reinstalling macOS to Start Fresh

Yes, you can wipe your Mac and start over. To do so, open the System Settings by selecting it from the Apple menu. in the corner of your screen. Click General in the sidebar and then click Transfer or Reset on the right. Finally, click Erase All Content and Settings to begin wiping your Mac and starting over. Please note that this will erase all content, settings, and apps from your computer, so please be sure to back up any important files before proceeding.

Troubleshooting Safari Issues on Mac

It’s possible that Safari isn’t working on your Mac because your version of Safari or macOS is out of date. To check for available updates, go to Apple menu > System Preferences, click General in the sidebar, then click Software Update on the right. If there are updates available, install them and then restart your Mac.

Another possibility is that a system file related to Safari has become corrupted and needs to be replaced. You can try repairing disk permissions using Disk Utility (located in Applications/Utilities). If this doesn’t help, you may need to reinstall Safari from the App Store or from an installation disc.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, you may have a more serious hardware or software problem on your Mac that needs to be addressed. Consider taking it to an Apple Store or authorized service provider for additional assistance.

In conclusion, Safari is a powerful and versatile web browser that is an essential part of the Apple OS. It is highly secure, with built-in privacy features and a range of customization options to make sure your browsing experience is as safe and efficient as possible. It also offers a rich suite of tools for developers, including support for the latest web technologies and tools for creating modern web applications. While it can’t be deleted or individually installed, Safari is an important part of the Apple OS experience, so it’s best to keep it updated to get the most out of your experience.

How to Delete Safari on Mac, iPhone, and iPad: Step-by-Step Guide

Can you delete safari from your mac using a third-party app, other safety and privacy tips for browsing on mac, iphone, and ipad, frequently asked questions, short on time here’s how to remove and disable safari on mac, iphone, and ipad in 2024:.

1. Clear Safari history on Mac. In an active Safari window, in the top navigation bar, click History → Clear History. Beside Clear, in the drop-down menu, select All History. Then, click the Clear History button .

2. Remove Safari from your Mac’s dock. Right-click on Safari, hover on Options, and click Remove from Dock.

3. Clear Safari history on iPhone/iPad. Go to Settings → Safari . Tap Clear History and Website Data .

4. Disable Safari on iPhone or iPad. Go to your iPhone or iPad’s settings, tap Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions → Allowed Apps, then untick the option for Safari. This will remove Safari from your home screen.

Optional: 5. Choose another private browser. If you’re not already using one, you may choose a different web browser, like Mozilla Firefox, the Tor browser, etc. If you’ve already completed step 2 above on your Mac, simply press Command + Space for Spotlight to open Safari. You’ll need Safari to download alternative browsers.

Optional: 6. Use a good virtual private network (VPN). A VPN can help you keep your browsing more private by encrypting your network traffic. If you’re concerned about being tracked online, this can be a good solution (I recommend ExpressVPN ).

If you want to delete Safari from your Mac or iPhone, you’re not alone: many users consider removing it for various reasons related to performance, privacy, and customization preferences. Safari can sometimes be sluggish, unresponsive, and incompatible with certain websites or plugins, prompting users to seek faster and more reliable alternatives like Chrome or Firefox.

Privacy concerns also play a role, as you may be uncomfortable with Safari’s data collection practices and lack of transparency. Additionally, Safari’s limited customization options and feature set compared to other browsers can be frustrating for those who desire more flexibility and control over their browsing experience.

Whatever the reason you want to get rid of Safari, you should know that it can’t be fully deleted due to system restrictions on Apple devices — but you still have access to some solid options. For instance, you can delete your browsing history, cache, and cookies, and you can disable Safari from appearing in your dock on Mac or on your home screen on iPhone and iPad. Find out how to disable Safari and what to use instead in my detailed guide below. Editors' Note: ExpressVPN and this site are in the same ownership group.

Now that you’ve cleared Safari’s history, cache, and cookies, and have disabled it, you can choose a more secure browser . Regular browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Edge are all great. They offer more frequent updates and better compatibility with a wide range of websites and extensions. They also provide great security features and privacy controls, making them more secure than Safari. Another great (and free!) option is to use Norton’s Private Browser , which comes with tons of built-in protective features.

Optional: Step 6. Use a Good Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Though you can use a private browser like Tor (The Onion Router), which encrypts your browser traffic by sending it through various nodes worldwide, it’s cumbersome to use and many websites block it outright — rendering it useless in some cases.

Using a regular browser along with a reliable VPN  is a better option. A VPN encrypts all your network traffic, not just your browser activity, thus enhancing your online privacy beyond that of browsers like Tor. VPNs also offer faster browsing speeds, access to streaming sites and torrenting, and access to a wider range of websites and services that might be restricted with Tor.

Though ExpressVPN is my favorite, there are some other really good VPNs for both Mac and iOS devices . Choose any one of those, and you’re all set!

No — third-party apps can’t delete or uninstall default Mac apps like Safari  because of system integrity protection (SIP), introduced in 2015 with OS X El Capitan. SIP prevents unauthorized changes to system files, folders, and apps.

And while you can technically uninstall Safari by booting into recovery mode, temporarily disabling SIP via Terminal, uninstalling Safari, and re-enabling SIP, this is not a good idea. This procedure can seriously damage the operating system and make your Mac unusable if not performed extremely carefully. Additionally, removing Safari can disrupt various macOS features and services that rely on it.

For instance, Safari’s WebKit engine is used by many third-party apps and system processes to render web content, so deleting Safari could cause these apps to malfunction or display web content incorrectly. iCloud services, like syncing bookmarks and reading lists across devices, also depend on Safari, and without it these features may not work as intended, leading to a fragmented user experience.

Moreover, deleting Safari can create issues with macOS updates. Apple designs system updates with the assumption that core apps like Safari are present. If Safari is missing, you might encounter problems during system updates, such as failed installations or missing security patches, which could leave your Mac vulnerable to security threats or cause other system instability.

But if you don’t want to use (or even see) it, you can remove Safari from your Mac’s dock and delete its remnant junk files. First, follow Step 2 to remove Safari from your Mac’s dock. Then, remove Safari’s remnant junk files, like its cache and cookies. Doing this manually can be a bit tedious, so I recommend using a third-party app like MacKeeper to make cleaning Safari’s remnant junk files much easier.

In addition to choosing an alternative secure browser, you should take other measures to protect your safety and privacy while browsing on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad. Here’s what I recommend:

  • Use an antivirus app. Using a reliable antivirus product is important for protecting your devices from malware, phishing attacks, and other online threats. My top pick for Mac is Intego , but there are lots of good options out there.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) where possible.  2FA adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts. By requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone, 2FA makes it significantly harder for unauthorized users to gain access to your accounts.
  • Keep your software updated.  Regularly updating your operating system and apps ensures you have the latest security patches and features. Updates often fix vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers, so staying up-to-date is crucial for maintaining security.
  • Use strong, unique passwords. Strong passwords that include a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols can protect your accounts from being easily hacked. Avoid using the same password across multiple sites. Consider using a solid password manager for iPhone and iPad  or Mac  to keep track of your passwords and generate strong ones for you.
  • Be cautious with public Wi-Fi. Public Wi-Fi networks can be insecure, making it easier for hackers to intercept your data. When using public Wi-Fi, avoid accessing sensitive information and consider using a VPN (like ExpressVPN ) to encrypt your internet traffic.

Editors' Note: Intego, Private Internet Access, CyberGhost and ExpressVPN are owned by Kape Technologies, our parent company

How do I completely uninstall Safari?

It‘s not possible to completely uninstall Safari from Apple devices, as it’s an integrated part of the operating system. Instead, you can clear its history, cache, and cookies, and then disable it. You can also remove it from the dock on your Mac. These steps effectively make Safari unusable without actually uninstalling it.

To disable Safari on an iPhone or iPad, go to settings, then Screen Time , followed by Content & Privacy Restrictions,  and finally Allowed Apps . Toggle off Safari to hide it. On your Mac, you can clear your browsing data and remove Safari from the dock by right-clicking and selecting Remove from Dock.

How do I stop Safari from showing on my iPhone and iPad?

To stop Safari from showing on your iPhone and iPad, go to settings, then tap Screen Time . Next, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions  and toggle it on if it’s not already enabled. Tap Allowed Apps , then turn off Safari by sliding the switch to the left. This will remove Safari from your home screen. Here’s a complete guide with screenshots if you need more help.

By using these settings, you can effectively hide Safari without deleting it. This keeps the browser disabled and out of sight, ensuring you won’t accidentally use it while browsing. Remember, you can always re-enable it by following the same steps and toggling the switch back on.

Can I remove Safari from my iPad?

No, you can’t completely remove Safari from your iPad, as it’s a built-in app that Apple doesn’t allow users to delete. However, you can disable it so that it no longer appears on your home screen. To do this, go to Settings , tap Screen Time , then Content & Privacy Restrictions , and finally Allowed Apps . Toggle off Safari to hide it.

Disabling Safari is the best alternative to removing it entirely. This ensures that Safari remains out of sight and prevents you from using it, but it does not remove the browser from your device. This way, you can switch to another preferred browser without interference.

Why is Safari bad?

Safari isn’t inherently bad, but it does have various limitations. It doesn’t offer as many customization options or extensions as browsers like Chrome or Firefox. Some users also find it slower, with unresponsive tabs and compatibility issues on certain websites.

Security and user interface issues also play a role in Safari’s mixed reputation. It has been called out for security vulnerabilities, especially in its private browsing mode, and its security updates aren’t as frequent as those from other browsers. The interface can feel less intuitive, with inconsistent behavior and not enough visible buttons. On mobile devices, the design, like where the address bar is placed, has been criticized for being awkward. Despite its strengths, like working well with Apple devices and being energy-efficient, these drawbacks can be significant. Luckily, if you don’t want to use it, you can easily disable it .

How to uninstall Safari from Mac

Safari comes pre-installed as Apple's default web browser on your Mac. While it's not necessary to uninstall Safari since it doesn't significantly impact your computer's resources like storage space or processing power, you might prefer other browsers like Google Chrome or Firefox.

If you're looking to permanently remove Safari from your Mac , this article provides guidance. Additionally, if you're deleting Safari to free up space, we'll offer some helpful workarounds.

Can you delete Safari from your Mac?

If you've ever tried to delete Safari from your Mac , you've likely discovered that it's not as straightforward as removing other applications. Unlike typical apps, Safari doesn't offer an option to uninstall it through  conventional methods  like dragging it to the Trash or deleting it from the Launchpad. Instead, attempting to delete Safari usually triggers a message indicating that the action cannot be completed because Safari is a system application.

Safari, like other default apps on macOS, is integrated into the operating system and protected by SIP ( System Integrity Protection ). On older Macs running Big Sur and previous  macOS versions , it was possible to delete Safari by disabling SIP. However, every time you install a macOS update, Safari will be put back on your Mac.

In newer macOS versions such as Sonoma and Ventura, Safari cannot be deleted even with SIP disabled. This safeguard is in place because removing Safari could potentially destabilize your system or affect functionalities that depend on it.

Share the information about whether you can delete Safari on Mac with others.

Before uninstalling Safari on Mac

Before you proceed with uninstalling Safari from your Mac, it's crucial to recognize that doing so will delete valuable information from your computer. Therefore, we strongly advise starting with a checklist to ensure you save all essential data before taking any steps to remove Safari.

Export Bookmarks and Saved Passwords : Ensure you export your bookmarks and saved passwords from Safari to a safe location so you can import them into another browser or re-import them if needed in the future.

Review Installed Extensions or Add-ons : If you've installed any extensions or add-ons in the Safari browser, make a note of any extensions you want to reinstall in another browser or find alternatives for.

Backup Important Data : Ensure you have a backup of any important data stored within Safari, such as browsing history, reading list, or stored form data.

Removing Safari from your MacBook may seem like a daunting task, especially considering that it's a default browser that comes pre-installed on macOS. However, there are valid reasons why you might want to remove Safari. Perhaps you prefer using an alternative browser like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, or maybe you're experiencing issues with Safari and want to perform a clean reinstall. Regardless of the reason, this guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of removing Safari from your MacBook.

Before we dive into the removal process, it's important to note that Safari is deeply integrated into the macOS system, and removing it completely may have implications on the functionality of other applications. Therefore, it's crucial to proceed with caution and consider the potential impact on your overall system performance.

In this comprehensive guide, we will explore various methods to remove Safari from your MacBook. We'll start by ensuring that Safari and all its associated processes are closed to prevent any conflicts during the removal process. Then, we'll delve into using Terminal to uninstall Safari, followed by utilizing a third-party uninstaller like AppCleaner to thoroughly remove any remaining files and preferences. Additionally, we'll discuss the option of manually deleting Safari files to ensure a clean removal.

By the end of this guide, you'll have a clear understanding of how to remove Safari from your MacBook, empowering you to make informed decisions about managing your system's applications and optimizing your browsing experience. Let's embark on this journey to streamline your MacBook's software environment and tailor it to your preferences.

Step 1: Close Safari and all its processes

Before initiating the process of removing Safari from your MacBook, it's essential to ensure that Safari and all its associated processes are completely closed. This step is crucial to prevent any potential conflicts or interruptions during the uninstallation process.

Here's how you can effectively close Safari and its processes:

Quit Safari : Begin by closing the Safari browser itself. If Safari is currently open, navigate to the "Safari" menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select "Quit Safari." Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut Command + Q to swiftly exit the browser.

Activity Monitor : Open the Activity Monitor application, which can be found in the "Utilities" folder within the "Applications" directory. You can also use Spotlight Search (Command + Space) to quickly locate and open Activity Monitor. Once opened, search for any processes related to Safari. If you find any Safari processes running, select them and click on the "X" button in the top-left corner of the Activity Monitor window to force quit those processes.

Force Quit Applications : In some cases, Safari processes may persist even after attempting to quit the browser. To address this, you can use the "Force Quit Applications" window by pressing Command + Option + Esc. This will display a list of currently running applications, including any lingering Safari processes. Select the Safari processes and click "Force Quit" to terminate them.

By ensuring that Safari and all its associated processes are completely closed, you create a stable environment for the subsequent steps of uninstalling Safari from your MacBook. This proactive approach minimizes the likelihood of encountering conflicts or errors during the removal process, ultimately contributing to a smoother and more effective uninstallation experience.

With Safari and its processes successfully closed, you're now ready to proceed to the next step of uninstalling Safari from your MacBook, which involves using Terminal to initiate the removal process. This meticulous approach sets the stage for a seamless and thorough removal of Safari, aligning with your goal of optimizing your MacBook's software environment to suit your preferences.

Step 2: Uninstall Safari using Terminal

Uninstalling Safari using Terminal provides a direct and efficient method to remove the browser from your MacBook. This approach leverages the command-line interface to execute precise instructions for uninstalling Safari, ensuring a thorough removal process. It's important to note that using Terminal requires careful attention to commands and their implications, as it directly interacts with the system's core components.

To uninstall Safari using Terminal, follow these steps:

Open Terminal : Launch the Terminal application, which can be found in the "Utilities" folder within the "Applications" directory. Alternatively, you can use Spotlight Search (Command + Space) to quickly locate and open Terminal.

Enter Uninstallation Command : In the Terminal window, input the following command to uninstall Safari:

sudo rm -rf /Applications/Safari.app

This command utilizes the "sudo" prefix to execute the removal with administrative privileges, ensuring that the necessary permissions are granted. The "rm" command is used to remove the specified file or directory, and the "-rf" flags indicate a forceful and recursive deletion, effectively removing Safari and its associated files.

Provide Administrator Password : Upon entering the command, Terminal will prompt you to enter your administrator password to authorize the removal process. This step is crucial to validate your administrative privileges and execute the uninstallation command.

Confirm Removal : After entering the administrator password, Terminal will proceed to execute the uninstallation command. Once the process is complete, Terminal will display a confirmation message, indicating that Safari has been successfully uninstalled from your MacBook.

Uninstalling Safari using Terminal offers a direct and precise approach to removing the browser, bypassing the need for complex graphical interfaces. This method ensures a comprehensive removal of Safari and its associated files, contributing to a streamlined software environment on your MacBook.

By leveraging Terminal to uninstall Safari, you gain a deeper understanding of the command-line interface and its capabilities, empowering you to perform advanced system management tasks with confidence. This method aligns with your goal of optimizing your MacBook's software environment, allowing you to tailor it to your preferences and streamline your browsing experience.

Step 3: Remove Safari using AppCleaner

Removing Safari using a dedicated uninstaller application such as AppCleaner offers a comprehensive and user-friendly approach to ensure the thorough removal of Safari and its associated files from your MacBook. AppCleaner simplifies the uninstallation process by systematically identifying and removing all remnants of the application, including preferences, caches, and support files, thereby contributing to a cleaner and more optimized software environment.

To remove Safari using AppCleaner, follow these steps:

Download and Install AppCleaner : Begin by downloading and installing the AppCleaner application on your MacBook. AppCleaner is a free utility that provides a straightforward interface for uninstalling applications and associated files. Once installed, launch the AppCleaner application to initiate the removal process.

Locate Safari in AppCleaner : Within the AppCleaner interface, you can search for Safari by entering its name in the search bar or browsing through the list of installed applications. Upon locating Safari in the application list, select it to proceed with the uninstallation process.

Review Identified Files : AppCleaner will display a list of files associated with Safari, including preferences, caches, and other related items. Take a moment to review the identified files to ensure that all relevant components of Safari are included for removal.

Initiate Uninstallation : Once you have reviewed the identified files, proceed to initiate the uninstallation process within AppCleaner. This action will prompt AppCleaner to systematically remove Safari and its associated files from your MacBook, ensuring a thorough and complete uninstallation.

Confirm Removal : After initiating the uninstallation, AppCleaner will request confirmation to proceed with the removal of Safari and its associated files. Confirm the action to allow AppCleaner to execute the uninstallation process.

Completion Confirmation : Upon successful completion of the uninstallation process, AppCleaner will display a confirmation message, indicating that Safari has been successfully removed from your MacBook. At this point, you can close the AppCleaner application, knowing that Safari and its remnants have been effectively eliminated from your system.

Removing Safari using AppCleaner streamlines the uninstallation process, providing a user-friendly and intuitive method to ensure a thorough removal of the browser and its associated files. By leveraging the capabilities of AppCleaner, you can confidently manage your applications and optimize your MacBook's software environment to align with your preferences and browsing needs.

Step 4: Delete Safari files manually

Manually deleting Safari files involves a meticulous approach to ensure the comprehensive removal of all remnants associated with the browser. While this method requires attention to detail, it offers a hands-on way to directly manage and eliminate specific files and folders related to Safari, contributing to a thorough cleanup of your MacBook's software environment.

Here's a detailed walkthrough of the process to delete Safari files manually:

Navigate to Applications Folder : Begin by accessing the "Applications" folder on your MacBook. You can do this by opening a new Finder window and selecting "Applications" from the sidebar. Locate the Safari application icon within the folder.

Move Safari to Trash : Once you've located the Safari application, drag the Safari icon to the Trash icon in the dock. Alternatively, you can right-click on the Safari icon and select "Move to Trash" from the contextual menu. This action removes the Safari application itself from your system.

Remove Safari Preferences : After moving the Safari application to the Trash, it's essential to address the associated preferences. Navigate to the following directory: ~/Library/Preferences/ and look for any files related to Safari. Identify and select the Safari-specific preference files, then move them to the Trash.

Delete Safari Support Files : Next, navigate to the following directory: ~/Library/Application Support/ and search for any folders or files associated with Safari. Remove these items by dragging them to the Trash, ensuring that all Safari support files are thoroughly eliminated.

Clear Safari Caches : Caches can accumulate over time and may impact the performance of the browser. To address this, navigate to the following directory: ~/Library/Caches/ and locate any Safari-specific cache files. Delete these files to ensure a clean removal of Safari's cached data.

Empty Trash : Once you have manually removed the Safari application, preferences, support files, and caches, it's crucial to empty the Trash to permanently delete these items from your MacBook. Right-click on the Trash icon in the dock and select "Empty Trash" to complete the removal process.

By manually deleting Safari files, you take a proactive approach to thoroughly removing all remnants associated with the browser, contributing to a streamlined and optimized software environment on your MacBook. This hands-on method allows you to directly manage and eliminate specific files and folders, empowering you to tailor your system to your preferences and browsing needs.

How to uninstall, reinstall, or reset Safari on Mac

How to uninstall, reinstall, or reset Safari on Mac

Are you constantly trying to fix Safari on Mac?

Users who are plagued by Safari issues usually want to uninstall and reinstall the app to resolve them. While this might work for a lot of apps out there, it doesn’t quite solve Safari problems. In fact, you can’t simply click and delete the app since it is an in-built feature of the macOS and a permanent part of it.

Try Kingpin Private Browser for Free »

How do I uninstall and reinstall Safari?

If you are keen on fixing Safari just get the latest version of macOS and reinstall it on your computer to get rid of Safari bugs. If you are working with the newest edition of your macOS, you are automatically using the most recent version of Safari. This also ensures that user data like passwords and extensions are protected. Of course, if all else fails, you might consider using a different browser like Kingpin for high browsing speeds and incognito browsing .

How do I fix Safari on my Mac?

The very basic thing you can do is force quit the browser and hold the shift key when Safari is starting. This will make it start in safe boot. The safe mode is more stable than the regular one.

But this doesn’t always work. So you might need to tweak Safari settings to fit your usage . Resetting Safari on Mac clears the pile of cookies, caches, redirects, ad preferences, and a lot more. As we wrote in the previous article, it is possible to reset Safari browser even without opening . On the other hand, changing the settings may also cause you to permanently lose any data that does not have a back-up.

You can modify the settings easily after you’ve launched the browser on Mac. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you improve browser performance:

1. Delete Safari cache

Cache files weigh down your system like nothing else. You can find the ‘Delete’ option in the Preferences section of the Safari toolbar. Then go to the ‘Advanced’ tab and scroll down to the ‘Show Develop menu in the menu bar. Check the box in front of it. This will display the ‘Develop’ tab on the toolbar. Click on ‘Develop’ and then click on ‘Empty Caches’.

In short, here are the steps:

Safari > Preferences > Advanced > Show Develop menu in menu bar > Develop > Empty Caches

2. Delete website data

Every website you visit leaves some amount of data on your system. And all users visit a huge number of websites over some time. So, you can imagine the total data load that gets stored on your Mac.  It is easy to adjust the browser in such a way that all this data is removed and the browser malfunctions are removed.

Detailed steps:

  • Launch Safari
  • Click on Preferences to open a new window and then click on Privacy.
  • Select the button named ‘Manage Website Data’.
  • Click on the ‘Remove All’ button. You will be asked to confirm your choice.
  • Click on ‘Remove Now’.

Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Manage Website Data > Remove All > Remove Now

Erasing website data from all websites you’ve ever visited might check the tracking issue. However, there is a potential problem of sites loading slower. Prioritize your needs and change the settings accordingly.

3. Delete Safari history

Safari settings on Mac make it easy to delete history files from the Safari toolbar.

Just do the following things. Launch Safari and click on the ‘Safari’ tab in the toolbar. Now click on ‘Clear History’. When the drop-down menu opens, choose ‘All History’ and finally, click on ‘Clear History’.

Like so: Safari > Clear History > All History > Clear History

4. Delete Safari extensions and plug-ins

To restore Safari settings and fix performance issues it is sometimes best to remove all extensions and plug-ins from the browser.

What to do:

  • Open Safari on your system.
  • Click on Preferences
  • Head over to the ‘Extensions’ tab on the menu
  • Here you will find the full list of active Extensions on the browser. You can choose to delete either a few selected ones or the entire list all at once.
  • Click on ‘Uninstall’ to finish deleting them.

This is what it looks like:

Safari > Preferences > Extensions > Uninstall

Deleting plug-ins may be more tiresome than you think. They get saved in two separate places. Use your Finder window to locate them.

Here’s the outline:

  • Launch Finder and move to the ‘Go’ option and select ‘Go to folder’
  • In the search list that gets displayed, type ‘ ˜ /Library’ and click on ‘Go’.
  • The Library folder opens and now it’s time to look for Internet Plug-ins saved in a different folder.
  • Drag and drop them in the Trash.
  • Next, go back to the ‘Go’ icon and type ‘Go to folder’ once again.
  • This time you type ‘/Library’ and click on Go.
  • Now you can look for the Internet Plug-ins folder once again.
  • Drag and drop plug-ins in the Trash one final time to remove them from Safari.

Finder > Go > Go to folder > ˜ /Library > Go > Internet Plug-Ins > Trash > Go > Go to folder > Library > Internet Plug-Ins > Trash

With all such small modifications, you can reset Safari whenever you want. Once the browser is free of all this weight, it will not only become faster and lighter but also more secure than before. Some website data or extensions often download malware in your system.

Choosing an additional browser

Of course changing settings over and over again gets tedious. You might want to pick another browser like Kingpin that doesn’t store cookies or other site data . This saves you from having to tinker with its settings. Kingpin also forgets your browsing history and caches once your session is over. Moreover, the browser lets you access restricted content in private.

Having an alternate browser doesn’t hurt, especially when you can use it to perform highly-sensitive online activities like bank transactions or shopping for gifs without worrying about data leakage to other sites. Its tabs are PIN protected so no one can spy on you. With this browser, the chances of being tracked are minimized, which is a great thing since your browsing session won’t be broken up with ads.

Summing it all up

Safari is part of the MacOS and hence can’t be uninstalled or reinstalled. To get the maximum efficiency out of it what you can do is change Safari setting to suit your purpose. Remove extensions, caches, cookies, history, and all such files of little use. Keep your OS updated to enjoy the benefits of the newest version of Safari for Mac . As an alternative, switch to a safer, faster, private browser like Kingpin to fix all browsing issues once and for all. It is available for Mac and makes for an uninterrupted browsing experience.

The farthest you can actually go towards doing it is by resetting the Safari browser and cleaning up all the information it contains. Why is this so? Why is it impossible to uninstall Safari in newer versions? Well, it’s because after El Capitan Version 10.11 was released, Apple also released System Integrity Protection.

It’s actually is a security feature. And of course, it only thinks about your best interests. With the System Integrity Protection, users cannot harm their device and its corresponding system files in any possible way. Anything important to the operating system cannot be deleted, uninstalled, disabled, or even corrupted. Thus, you are unable to modify things that are critical to the operation of your system. Thus, you cannot remove pre-installed system applications and that includes the browser Safari.

How to clear Safari’s cache and cookies on Mac

delete safari on mac

There are a handful of situations when clearing Safari’s cookies or cache–one of the places where Safari stores website data to avoid having to download it afresh each time you access a site–can help improve your browsing experience.

The first is when websites simply stop working when you access them on Safari. Perhaps Facebook stops updating with new posts, for example, or the images on a site don’t appear as they should. If this happens, it’s likely the cache has become corrupted.

Alternatively, if you find that personal info automatically completed on sites isn’t correct, deleting cookies can help. These are small files that sites use to save data about you and what you do on the site.

Even if none of these problems affect you, periodically cleaning browser data can help protect your privacy from snoops who want to discover what you’ve been up to online. In this article, therefore, we explain how to clear Safari’s cache and cookies on Mac.

We also have an article that explains How to clear cache on a Mac.

How to clear Safari cookies and cache for websites

Cleaning cookies and the cache data for individual sites can be done via Safari’s Settings/Preferences.

  • Open Safari
  • Click on Safari in the menu at the top of the screen.
  • Click on Settings or Preferences (depending on the version of macOS you are running).
  • Go to the Privacy tab.
  • Click on Manage Website Data…
  • Choose Remove All or select websites individually to remove.

After the data is loaded you’ll probably see a long list of websites. You can choose to Remove All or just select individual websites you want to remove from this list. If you want to select a number of different sites you can click on one and then press and hold the Command key to select a second, third or fourth and so on. We recommend that you don’t select hundreds this way – it’s better to delete in batches just in case you have to start over.

If you would prefer to select all and then deselect the ones you want to keep you can do so. Use Command + A to select all, then press and hold Command while clicking on any website you are happy to keep in this list. Just click Remove afterwards, not Done, as that will just undo all your hard work.

There’s a search field you can use to track down individual sites.

Bear in mind that deleting cookies might remove autocompleted login usernames and passwords for sites, and will almost certainly log you out of that site if you’ve configured it to automatically log in each time you visit.

How to clear Safari's cache and history on Mac: Privacy

How to clear Safari cache

The hidden Safari Developer menu can be used to clear just the cache, leaving cookies and the browser history in place. This is a very useful diagnostic step to take before removing those two items if a website behaves badly.

If you just want to clear all your cache you can do so by following these steps:

  • Open Safari.
  • Click on Safari in menu bar at top of screen.
  • Click on Settings/Preferences (depending on the version of macOS you are running).
  • Click on the Advanced tab.
  • Check the box beside Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar.
  • Now there will be a new Develop tab in the menu at the top of your screen. Click on this.
  • Click on Empty Caches.

Alternatively click on Option/Alt + Command + E.

Close any open Safari windows and select Empty Caches on the Develop menu. Then click File > New Window to start Safari with a clean cache.

How to remove autocomplete data from AutoFill

Safari’s AutoFill tool can fill in username and password details on websites as well as credit card details and other elements like your address and email details.

This can be really useful, but it can also be annoying if the data it fills in is incorrect or out of context. It’s also a problem when AutoFill helpfully enters old or incorrect passwords or emails and addresses.

You can change this data, or delete it by following these steps:

  • Click on Safari.
  • Click on Settings/Preferences.
  • Choose the AutoFill tab.
  • Here you can edit contact information, usernames and passwords, credit cards and other data. Click on Edit beside the category you want access to.
  • You’ll need to enter your password or use Touch ID to gain access.

Delete incorrect data: If you are finding that Safari is autofilling incorrect data about you–your address, for example–click Edit beside Using information from my contacts. This will open up your Contacts app. Your card will be at the top or under My Card. You can add and amend data about you here.

How to clear Safari's cache and history on Mac: Autofill

Delete incorrect passwords and site logins: If you wanted to delete incorrect passwords, for example, you can just click on the Passwords tab. If you know which password you want to remove search for the website or service and then find the older password option (if there is more than one) and select it and then click on the – below the column to remove it. You can then select Delete Password. If that means there is no password saved for that website, you can then recreate the entry for the site by clicking the Add button. You’ll first need to provide the URL of the site (that is, something like https://facebook.com ), and then type the username and password alongside (hit the Tab key to move from field to field).

See: How to autofill passwords, bank cards, names and addresses for more.

How to clear Safari's cache and history on Mac: Site logins

Delete logins and passwords system-wide

Pruning site logins can also be done via the Keychain Access app, which you’ll find in the Utilities folder of the Applications list in Finder, although you should be very careful using this app because it pretty much controls the entire security operation of your Mac! However, by removing errant username and password entries here you’ll stop virtually all of your Mac apps using them, and not just Safari.

Just type the name of the site into the Search field, and look in the list of results for entries of the kind Web Form Password. Right-click the entry and select Delete.

Are you seeing this on a particular website? They are paid to provide those ads for you. You will see these more frequently on less than legitimate websites. Some pop ups can be reduced by going to Settings > Safari > Block Pop-ups, but websites can also ignore this by embedding the ad in their web page. If you are seeing the same ad on multiple websites, then a screen shot may be helpful.

How To Get Rid Of Mac Apps That Won't Delete

Woman holding MacBook Pro

When most of us download apps to our Macs, we do so with the best of intentions. We plan to use those apps for the foreseeable future and expect them to improve our Apple experience , whether that's helping us work better or keeping us entertained. However, the day may come when you want to uninstall an app you don't use anymore, especially if you need to free up space on your Mac for other items or to  fix a slow Mac .

While this should be a straightforward process, it's not always that way. Using Launchpad and Finder are the most common ways to delete apps on a Mac . However, from time to time, you might come across a stubborn app that refuses to budge when using these methods, making it seemingly impossible to remove. There could be any number of reasons for this: the app might still be running in the background or protected by system features that keep certain files and apps from being deleted or modified. Whatever the case may be, if you find yourself with unwanted apps on your Mac that you can't seem to remove, there are a few ways to get around these problems and delete them.

Make sure the app isn't running in the background

Mac Activity Monitor with quit options window

If you find yourself unable to uninstall an app on your Mac, the first thing you should do is make sure it's not open or running in the background. If it is, you'll get an error message each time you try to uninstall it, saying that the app is in use. It's not uncommon for apps to run in the background without us realizing what's going on. If you think this might be happening, you can try to force quit the app. You can do this by going to the Apple menu, clicking Force Quit, selecting the app you want to close in the pop-up window, and clicking the Force Quit button.

If you still can't get the app to close, it's time to use the Activity Monitor to try to close it. Your Mac's Activity Monitor lets you see what's going on with your computer, including whether an app or process might be causing a problem.

Follow these steps to use the Activity Monitor to force quit an app:

  • Open a Finder window and click Applications.
  • Scroll down the list of applications, click Utilities, and then double-click Activity Monitor to launch it.
  • Click CPU at the top of the Activity Monitor window to display all the apps and processes running on your Mac.
  • Look for the app you want to quit and click on it; it might say Not Responding and be highlighted in red.
  • Click the X icon at the top of the Activity Monitor and select Force Quit from the pop-up window.

Once you've completed these steps, the app should be closed. You can try deleting the app again using Finder or Launchpad.

Use Terminal to delete stubborn apps

Mac Terminal showing code

If you've confirmed the app isn't running in the background or have used Activity Monitor to force quit the app, but you still can't delete it, you can use Terminal to remove it. This method is more complicated than others because it requires some understanding of command-line interfaces or at least a willingness to learn how to work with them.

When using Terminal to delete an app, you must be precise, typing every command exactly as it's written and making sure every character and space is where it should be. A risk of using Terminal is unintended data loss if you mistype a command. So, you should only use this method if you're comfortable with it.

Follow these steps to use Terminal to delete apps:

  • Get the exact name of the app and the directory where it's located. In most cases, it will be in the Applications folder.
  • Press Command + Spacebar to open Spotlight Search, then type "Terminal," or go to Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal.
  • Type "cd /Applications" and press Return to go to the Applications directory in the Terminal window.
  • Type "sudo rm -rf [app name].app" — replace [app name] (including the brackets) with the exact name of the app you want to delete. Make sure there's a space between "-rf" and the app's name.
  • Press Return and enter your password (you won't see your password as you type it).

After you've finished these steps, the app will be deleted. However, you might need to restart your Mac to remove the icon from the Dock. Some residual files or folders related to the app might still be there after you've uninstalled it. Hold the Option key and go to Go > Library > Application Support (you won't see the Library option without holding the Option key) to find any related files and delete them.

Use a third-party tool to delete apps

CleanMyMac X Uninstaller feature

If you'd prefer to keep it simple and not deal with command-line interfaces, third-party uninstallers are the way to go. These tools make it easy to delete apps along with any residual files like caches, logs, and leftover data. There are a variety of free and paid third-party uninstallers available for Macs, so it's just a matter of finding one that works for you.

CleanMyMac X is a popular option and has 4.6 out of 5 stars in the App Store with over 10,000 ratings. You can use its Uninstaller feature to browse All Applications installed on your Mac or select Unused to show apps you haven't used in six months. You can then sort them by Name, Size, and Last Opened.

When you find the app you want to remove, all you have to do is click the little circle next to it in the list and click Uninstall at the bottom. You can check for residual files or folders in the Uninstaller's Leftovers tab to be sure all remnants of the app are removed. CleanMyMac X will cost you $34.99 a year after a seven-day free trial, but it does far more than just uninstall apps.

How to Browse More Efficiently with Safari Profiles in macOS Sonoma

Dennis Sellers

With macOS Sonoma, Apple has added a feature called Safari Profiles. This allows you to set up different profiles within the web browser.

Other browsers like Chrome and Firefox have had similar features for years. The idea behind profiles isn’t that different users will be using the browser, it’s that you can customize different profiles for different use cases.

For example, you can keep your browsing, cookies, and logins separate for Work use and Personal use with different profiles. Let’s say you have both personal and work Google accounts. Using profiles, you can login to the work Google accounts in the Work profile, and login to your personal Google account in the personal profile. Not only does this keep your logins separate, but if remembers to keep you logged in within the appropriate profile.

Once setup, Safari keeps each profile in its own dedicated window. (This is a similar approach to how Chrome’s profile implementation works.)

Plus, Apple says that Profiles also help you separate your history, extensions, Tab Groups, cookies, and favorites. It remembers each individual profile setup and allows you to quickly switch between these profiles as you browse.

How to create Safari Profiles in macOS Sonoma:

° Launch Safari.

° Under the Safari menu, go to Settings .

Safari > Settings

° Enter your password.

° Go to the Profiles tab.

° Click Start Using Profiles .

Profiles tab

° Click the New Profile button.

° Choose a Name, Symbol, and Color.

Create Profile

° Tap on Create Profile.

To use Safari Profiles in macOS Sonoma:

° Tap File in the menubar.

° Choose New [New Profile Name1] Windows .

° Repeat the process for each new Profile you wish to create.

To switch to another profile, open a new window for the other profile by tapping New [Profile Name 2] Window. When you’re in a Safari window in a Safari profile, everything you do stays in that Profile. That includes extensions, bookmarks, and more.

How to delete a Safari Profile:

° Click Profiles in the top row.

° Click on the one that you want to remove.

° Click the “-“ ( Delete) icon.

Delete Profile

° You’ll be asked if you want to delete it. If you do, click Delete Profile .

How to Clear Hulu Cache on Mac

Hulu is a popular streaming service and is a great option if you want to catch up on your favorite TV shows. Though it has a great selection of content, many of you may face issues where videos won’t load. It’s usually caused by corrupt cache files generated in your web browser. So, if you’re having problems with this, stay tuned, and we’ll show you exactly how to clear Hulu cache on Mac.

In this article you will find the following:

Before we start:   Caches can be annoying, especially if you want to clear up disk space on Mac or if you’re facing issues with streaming services. Though you can delete cache files manually, it can be a cumbersome process, as most apps generate their own, individual caches. The best solution is to use MacKeeper’s Safe Cleanup to automatically identify and delete all cache files on your Mac in just a few clicks.   Here’s how you can use it: Download and install MacKeeper . Select Safe Cleanup from the side menu, then click Start Scan and the app will find all cache files on your Mac. Tick the file types you want to remove, or select Check All to remove all junk files. Then, click Clean Junk Files and they’ll be removed from your Mac.
  • What is Hulu cache on Mac

Like all streaming services, Hulu generates temporary cache files over time. These files, by the way, speed up the website's load times. This is obviously useful so you can get stuck into your favorite shows as soon as possible.

However, many of you might face streaming issues on Hulu, where the video won’t load. From our experience, the best thing to do in this situation is to clear your Hulu cache files, as the latter may be corrupted.

  • What does clearing the Hulu cache do

Clearing your Hulu cache resets all of your site settings on Hulu, so it’s a great place to start in case of streaming video issues.

  • How you can clear Hulu cache on Mac

  • Click on the Advanced tab and check the box for Show Develop menu in menu bar. This will allow you to easily clear your cache in the future, without needing to open the developer menu.

4. How to clear Hulu cache on Opera

Opera web browser includes a shortcut to clear your caches for Hulu, right from the first menu you see. To access your cache settings in Opera:

  • In the Time Range section, select All time .

Though it’s not too difficult to fix Hulu issues by clearing your web browser’s cache, you can also delete all cache files across all of your apps in seconds by using MacKeeper’s Safe Cleanup tool. This is especially useful if you’re facing issues with any website or app, or if you’re running out of disk space on your Mac. These cache files are often called ‘junk files,’ as other than some minor performance improvements, they end up just clogging up your Mac with useless files.

Now, find out how to delete cache on Mac using Safe Cleanup below:

  • Download and install MacKeeper .
  • Select the Safe Cleanup feature from the menu on the left, then click Scan .
  • Tick the file types you want to delete, e.g. Caches .
  • Hit Clear Junk Files and MacKeeper will remove pointless junk files in seconds.

To clear all useless cache files - included those generated by Hulu - open MacKeeper and select Safe Cleanup. Then, hit Scan - and tick the Caches option once the scan is complete. Finally, hit Clear Junk Files.
