Safari, the sleek and user-friendly web browser developed by Apple, is renowned for its seamless integration with the Mac and iOS ecosystems. It offers a secure and efficient browsing experience, making it a popular choice among Apple device users. One of the features that Safari provides is Safe Search, a built-in setting designed to filter out explicit or inappropriate content from search results. While this feature is valuable for ensuring a family-friendly browsing experience, there are instances where users may wish to turn it off to access a broader range of search results.

In this article, we will delve into the process of turning off Safe Search on Safari. Whether you're a parent seeking to adjust the browsing settings for your child or an individual looking to customize your search preferences, understanding how to disable Safe Search can empower you to tailor your browsing experience to your specific needs. Let's explore the steps to access Safari settings and disable Safe Search, allowing you to unlock a wider spectrum of search results while using this popular web browser .

Accessing Safari Settings

Accessing the settings in Safari is a straightforward process that allows users to customize their browsing experience according to their preferences. Whether you're using Safari on a Mac computer or an iOS device, the steps to access the settings remain consistent, offering a seamless experience across different platforms.

If you're using Safari on a Mac, you can access the browser's settings by following these simple steps:

Open Safari : Launch the Safari browser on your Mac by clicking on its icon in the dock or by searching for it using Spotlight.

Navigate to Preferences : Once Safari is open, click on "Safari" in the top-left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear, and you should select "Preferences" from the options listed. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut "Command + ," to access the Preferences window directly.

Explore Settings : In the Preferences window, you will find a range of tabs at the top, such as General, AutoFill, and Security. These tabs allow you to customize various aspects of your browsing experience. To modify the Safe Search settings, you will need to navigate to the "Search" tab.

Adjust Safe Search : Within the "Search" tab, you will find the option to enable or disable Safe Search. Simply uncheck the box next to "Enable Safe Search" to turn off this feature. Once you've made the desired changes, you can close the Preferences window, and your new settings will be applied.

For those using Safari on an iOS device, such as an iPhone or iPad, the process of accessing the browser's settings is equally user-friendly:

Open Settings : Begin by tapping on the "Settings" app on your iOS device's home screen. This will open the main settings menu, where you can configure various options for your device and installed apps.

Scroll to Safari : Within the Settings menu, scroll down until you find the list of installed apps. Tap on "Safari" to access the browser's specific settings.

Customize Search Settings : In the Safari settings, you can customize a range of options, including search engine preferences and privacy settings. To disable Safe Search, look for the "Search Engine" section and toggle off the "Safe Search" option.

By following these straightforward steps, users can easily access Safari's settings and make adjustments to their browsing preferences, including the ability to disable Safe Search. This flexibility empowers users to tailor their browsing experience to align with their individual needs and preferences, ensuring a personalized and enjoyable web surfing experience.

Turning Off Safe Search

By turning off this feature, you can access a broader range of search results, allowing for more comprehensive and unrestricted exploration of online content. Whether you're seeking to fine-tune your search preferences or enable access to specific types of content, the process of turning off Safe Search in Safari is designed to be user-friendly and easily accessible.

Once you have accessed the Safari settings, whether on a Mac or iOS device, the next step is to locate the Safe Search option and make the necessary adjustments. In the Preferences window on a Mac, you can find the Safe Search setting within the "Search" tab. By unchecking the box next to "Enable Safe Search," you can effectively turn off this feature. On iOS devices, the Safe Search option is typically found within the Safari settings menu, where you can toggle off the "Safe Search" setting to disable it.

It's important to note that by turning off Safe Search, you may encounter a wider variety of search results, including content that may not be suitable for all audiences. Therefore, it's advisable to exercise caution and consider the browsing environment and audience when making this adjustment. For parents or guardians managing the browsing settings for children, it's essential to have open conversations about online safety and responsible browsing practices.

In conclusion, the ability to turn off Safe Search on Safari offers users a valuable level of customization and control over their browsing experience. By providing a user-friendly interface for adjusting search preferences, Safari empowers individuals to tailor their online exploration according to their specific needs and preferences. Whether it's enabling access to a broader spectrum of search results for research purposes or customizing the browsing environment for a more unrestricted experience, the option to disable Safe Search reflects Apple's commitment to delivering a personalized and versatile web browsing platform.

It's important to recognize that while turning off Safe Search can expand the range of search results, it also comes with the responsibility to exercise caution and consider the browsing environment and audience. For parents and guardians managing the browsing settings for children, open conversations about online safety and responsible browsing practices are essential. By fostering a proactive approach to online safety, users can leverage the flexibility of Safe Search settings to create a balanced and secure browsing environment for themselves and their families.

Furthermore, the seamless integration of Safe Search settings across different platforms, including Mac computers and iOS devices, underscores Apple's dedication to providing a consistent and intuitive user experience. Whether accessing Safari settings on a Mac or an iOS device, the process remains straightforward and accessible, ensuring that users can easily customize their browsing preferences regardless of the device they are using.

By understanding how to navigate the Safari settings and make adjustments to the Safe Search feature, users can unlock a more tailored and versatile browsing experience, allowing them to explore the web in a way that aligns with their individual preferences and requirements. By offering a seamless and intuitive process for adjusting Safe Search settings, Safari ensures that users can navigate the digital landscape with confidence, knowing that they have the flexibility to tailor their browsing experience according to their unique needs and preferences.

Chrome Is Top Dog, but Firefox Is Still My Favorite Browser

When should you use ztna instead of a vpn, 5 things i never back up to the cloud, quick links, changing search engine in safari preferences, using other search engines with safari, duckduckgo is your best choice.

Safari is a solid browser for most Mac users. It's fast, energy-efficient , plays nicely with the iPhone and iPad , and more. If you're not happy with the default search engine , though, changing it takes only a few clicks. Related: How to Change the Default Search Engine in Safari on iPhone or iPad

To change Safari's default search engine, launch the Safari app on your Mac and click on "Safari" in the top-left corner of the screen and select "Preferences" from the list that appears:

A new window will appear. Click on the "Search" button to switch to the search engine preferences:

Click on the drop-down arrow to select a search engine of your choice. You'll be able to choose from Google, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Bing , and Ecosia :

Once you've chosen your desired search engine you can close the preferences panel. From now on, all searches you conduct from the address bar will use the search engine specified in Safari's preferences.

There's currently no way of adding more search engines to Safari, which means if you want to use another search provider by default, you'll need to use an alternative browser like Chrome or Firefox.

Fortunately, you can use one clever workaround to search the web with different search engines directly from the Safari URL bar. To do this you'll need to use DuckDuckGo as your default search engine, so follow the steps above to change to this default search engine in Safari's preferences.

DuckDuckGo supports a range of additional operators called "bangs" which are primarily designed to limit your search to a particular website . For example, if you search "change Safari search engine !htg" in DuckDuckGo, you'll trigger the How-To Geek bang (!htg) which will search this website specifically, using our choice of search provider (which happens to be Google).

You can do this for a range of services like YouTube (!yt), Wikipedia (!w), and Twitter (!twitter). You can also use it to search Google (!g), Google Images (!gimg), and Gmail (!gmail) without having to rely on Google as your primary search engine. Remember that you don't get DuckDuckGo's enhanced privacy when using these bangs since the search engine merely hands your request to a third-party search instead.

Bangs include other search providers like Bing (!bing) and Ecosia (!eco). Head to the DuckDuckGo Bangs Repository  and search for your desired search engine, then add the bang to each search.

Not only is DuckDuckGo the best default Safari search engine from a privacy perspective, but you can also always switch to Google and get more in-depth results by adding a "!g" bang to your search. Searching with DuckDuckGo soon becomes second nature, especially when you've remembered which bangs to use for your favorite websites and search engines.

You can also use DuckDuckGo for media, maps, news, and directions .

How Google's huge defeat in antitrust case could change how you search the internet

Portrait of Jessica Guynn

In the most significant legal ruling against a major technology giant in more than two decades, a federal judge says Google illegally monopolized online search and advertising by paying companies like Apple and Samsung billions of dollars a year to install Google as the default search engine on smartphones and web browsers.

By monopolizing search queries on smartphones and browsers, Google abused its dominance in the search market, throttling competition and harming consumers, U.S. District Judge  Amit P. Mehta  said in his 286-page decision. Google owes much of its more than $300 billion in annual revenue to search ads.

“ Google is a monopolist , and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” Mehta wrote.

The massive win for the Department of Justice could fundamentally reshape how Google does business . It also could change how we use the internet and search for information.

The DOJ filed antitrust charges during the final weeks of the Trump administration, making good on Donald Trump’s pledge to challenge the runaway power of Big Tech. That mission continued during the Biden administration, which has been aggressive in pursuing antitrust cases.

“This victory against Google is an historic win for the American people,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. “No company – no matter how large or influential – is above the law.”

The case is the most significant victory for the DOJ in a monopoly case in decades, said Notre Dame Law School professor Roger Alford, who served in the DOJ’s antitrust division. “Not since Microsoft lost in the 1990s have we seen a case of this magnitude.”

Google said it would appeal the decision. “This decision recognizes that Google offers the best search engine, but concludes that we shouldn’t be allowed to make it easily available,” Kent Walker, president of global affairs, said in a statement.

Shares in Google's parent company Alphabet slipped following the judge's ruling. They closed down nearly 5% Monday, part of a broader tech stock selloff .

If upheld, the decision will be a “major boost” for other antitrust cases pending against Google as well as other major tech players like Amazon, Apple and Meta, said Loyola University Chicago School of Law professor Spencer Weber Waller.

Monday’s ruling did not include remedies. Remedies will be decided separately, likely after an appeal. One remedy could see Google losing its ability to strike device deals that have helped make its search engine so ubiquitous.

Devising the right remedy is critical to restoring competition to the marketplace, Waller said.

“There are no fines or monetary penalties in these types of cases, but the court will have to decide whether Google should be broken up in some way. More likely, it will order Google to eliminate the exclusive contracts and licensing restrictions that have reinforced its monopoly position for years,” he said.

Google has argued that its distribution deals are common in the business world. It pays for its search engine to be on phones the way a food manufacturer pays to promote its products at eye level in a grocery store aisle.

The way Google sees it, if you don’t like Google, you can switch the default search engine on your device. But people don’t switch, Google says, because they prefer Google.

If Google was not the default search engine on so many devices, would consumers still use it for 90% of web searches?

During the 10-week trial, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella testified that Google’s unchallenged dominance created a “Google web.”

“You get up in the morning, you brush your teeth and you search on Google,” Nadella said at one point in his testimony. “Everybody talks about the open web, but there is really the Google web.”

Nadella has expressed concern that Microsoft’s disadvantage would increase as artificial intelligence becomes a major component of search.

In a research note Monday, Baird Equity Research senior analyst Colin Sebastian pointed to a range of tactics Google's arch-competitor Microsoft has used to grow the market share of its Bing search engine over the years, from paying users to use its search engine to embedding it in Office.

“People clearly prefer Google to Bing,” Sebastian said.

Chamber of Progress CEO Adam Kovacevich said Monday's ruling hands Microsoft an unearned boost.

“The biggest winner from today's ruling isn't consumers or little tech, it’s Microsoft,” Kovacevich said in a statement. “Microsoft has underinvested in search for decades, but today’s ruling opens the door to a court mandate of default deals for Bing. That’s a slap in the face to consumers who chose Google because they think it’s the best.”

How to ask Google to remove deepfake porn results from Google Search

Shot of a group of shocked-looking young man staring at a monitor in a dark room

The internet is full of deepfakes — and most of them are nudes.

According to a report from Home Security Heroes, deepfake porn makes up 98% of all deepfake videos online. Thanks to easy-to-use and freely available generative AI tools, the number of deepfakes online — many of which aren’t consensual — skyrocketed 550% from 2019 to 2023.

While laws against nonconsensual deepfakes are lagging behind, at least in the U.S., it’s becoming a little bit easier to get deepfakes removed, thanks to new tools in Google Search.

Google recently introduced changes to Search to combat deepfake porn, including adjustments to the Search ranking algorithm designed to lower deepfake content in searches. The company also rolled out an expedited way to process requests for removal of nonconsenual deepfake porn results from Search.

Here’s how to use it.

Requesting a request for removal

The easiest way to request that a deepfake nonconsensual porn result — a webpage, image or video — be removed from Google Search is using this web form . Note that there’s a separate form for child sexual abuse imagery, and the target content has to meet Google’s criteria for removal, as follows:

  • It’s nude, intimate, or sexually explicit (for example, images or videos of you) and is distributed without permission; OR
  • It’s fake or falsely depicts you as nude or in a sexually explicit situation; OR
  • It incorrectly associates you or your name with sex work.

Click on “Content contains nudity or sexual material option,” then proceed to the next page.

Google Search deepfakes removal

At this stage, select “Content falsely portrays me in a sexual act, or in an intimate state. (This is sometimes known as a ‘deep fake’ or ‘fake pornography.’):”

Google Search deepfakes removal

At the final page in the form, after entering your name, country of residence and contact email, you’ll have to indicate whether it’s you or someone else depicted in the deepfake content to be removed. Google allows others to remove content on someone’s behalf, but only if that person is an “authorized representative” who explains how they have that authority.

Google Search deepfakes removal

Next is the content information section. Here, you’ll need to provide the URLs to the deepfake results to be removed (up to a maximum of 1,000), the URLs to the Google Search results where the content appears (again, up to a maximum of 1,000) and search terms that return the deepfakes. Lastly, you’ll have to upload one or more screenshots of the content you’re reporting and any additional info that might help explain the situation.

Steps after submitting a request

After submitting a request, you’ll get an automated email confirmation. The request will be reviewed, after which Google may request more information (like additional URLs). You’ll get a notification of any action taken, and, if the request didn’t meet Google’s requirements for removal, a follow-up message explaining why.

Requests that are denied can be re-submitted with new supporting materials.

Google says that when someone successfully requests the removal of nonconsensual deepfake porn results in Search, the company’s systems will also aim to filter explicit results on all similar searches about that person. In addition, Google says, when an image is removed from Search under Google’s policies, its systems will scan for — and remove — any duplicates of that image they find.

“These protections have already proven to be successful in addressing other types of non-consensual imagery, and we’ve now built the same capabilities for fake explicit images as well,” Google writes in a blog post. “These efforts are designed to give people added peace of mind, especially if they’re concerned about similar content about them popping up in the future.”

Distraction Control: In new iOS 18 beta, Safari lets you hide annoying parts of web pages

I f you're looking to switch to Safari but just need that one special feature to give you a push, we might have just the thing: Distraction Control.

It's a new feature for Safari that went live in the latest iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia developer betas (via MacRumors ) — somewhat surprisingly, we might add, as Apple hasn't previously announced it.

The idea is simple: With Distraction Control, you can hide "distracting" parts of web pages. It's not an ad blocker, meaning it will not remove dynamic ads from a page. Think of it more as a way to get rid of some really annoying part of a web page that you frequent, like a login prompt. It is persistent, though; if the item you hid didn't change, it will remain hidden even if you reload the page.

To try it out, open a web page in Safari, tap on the Page Menu icon (the one in the upper left corner), and then tap on "Hide Distracting Items". You then have to manually choose the part of the page you want to hide. As you do so, Apple will warn you that "hiding distracting items will not permanently remove ads and other content that update frequently."

Bonus: applying the feature does not only remove it from sight, but blows it away with a pretty cool animation. Well done, Apple.

Hiding parts of webpages manually might sound like a tall order, and it probably is in many cases, but I can imagine this feature being useful to someone who has a fairly small number of websites they really love, and just wants to have the best possible experience there.

Distraction Control is currently only live in the latest developer betas, which are rolling out to eligible users now; the feature is not available in the public beta yet, though I imagine it will happen pretty soon.

Hands-On With Safari's New Distraction Control in the iOS 18 Beta

Apple today surprised us with a new feature for Safari in iOS 18 , iPadOS 18 , and macOS Sequoia , with Distraction Control debuting in the latest betas. We thought we'd take a quick look at Distraction Control for those who have not yet been able to update, non-developers, or those who are on the iOS 18.1 beta track.

You can basically use Distraction Control to hide any static element on a webpage, and you can get to the controls by going to the page menu in Safari. Just tap the Hide Distracting Items option and then tap whatever you want to hide on a page. Hidden items do not sync across devices, and you can restore anything hidden by tapping on the Show Hidden Items option.

With the betas, Apple also tweaked the Photos app, removing the carousel in response to user feedback.

What do you think of these changes? Let us know in the comments below.

This new Safari feature lets you snap away annoying ads like Thanos

Roman Loyola

In macOS Sequoia and iOS/iPadOS 18, Apple will introduce a new Safari feature called Distraction Control, which allows users to select an element on a website and make it disappear. It’s not an ad blocker in that it stops ad elements from loading in the first place; ads still load, but if you implement Distraction Control, you can make them go away temporarily.

The feature isn’t just for ads–it can be used on any webpage element, including actual content elements such as headlines, paragraphs, images, video windows, and more. Anything you deem distracting, you can use Distraction Control.

Distraction Control is part of the macOS Sequoia beta 5 that was released to developers earlier this week; a public beta should be coming soon. It’s not in the macOS Sequoia 15.1 beta that features Apple Intelligence, and it’s not known if it will be available in later versions of that beta. It’s also not clear if the feature will be coming to Safari in macOS Sonoma or other older versions of macOS. Here’s how to use Safari’s Distraction Control in macOS Sequoia:

  • Tools required: macOS Sequoia beta 5 or later

Page Menu option

macOS Sequoia Safari Distraction Control: Hide Distracting Item

In Safari for macOS Sequoia, you’ll find a new Page Menu icon on the left side of the address bar. It replaces the Add page to Reading List (a circle with a “+” symbol) that would appear when you moved the cursor to that space.

Click on the Page Menu icon and you’ll see a pop-up menu. If the page can be formatted for Reader View, a  Show Reader  button along with the title of the webpage appears at the top of the pop-up. Below that (or at the top, if the Show Reader option isn’t available, see image above), you’ll find a  Hide Distracting Items  option.

Click on  Hide Distracting Items . A pop-up appears to tell you that, “Hiding distracting items will not permanently remove ads and other content that update frequently.” Click  OK  and then proceed to step 2.

Pick your distracting item

macOS Sequoia Distraction Control: pick distracting item

After activating  Hide Distracting Items , whenever you move the cursor over something on a webpage, you’ll see a blue box surrounding it. This indicates which element will disappear if you click on it.

Make the item disappear

When you want to make an item go away, hover over it until the blue box appears, and then click. You’ll see an animation of the element dissolve and then disappear. (I like to call Distraction Control the  Thanos feature .) When you remove an item, the webpage reorganizes to fill in the gap, so you’re not left with a distracting blank space

In the macOS Sequoia beta, there don’t seem to be any restrictions on what you can make disappear. You can select the very top header of a webpage, the very bottom footer, and anything in between. You can make everything on a webpage disappear and end up with a blank page.

The items are supposed to stay hidden through page refreshes or reloads unless something about that item changes. In my experience with macOS Sequoia beta 5, the behavior of items staying hidden through page reloads was inconsistent. This could change in future betas.

Cancel or Done

macOS Sequoia Distraction Control: Cancel or Done and item tally

In the address bar, you’ll see a tally of the items you’ve removed. You can click  Cance l to reinstate the items or  Done  if you’re satisfied.

Make the items reappear

macOS Sequoia Distraction Control: show hidden items

If you decide you want to be like  Bruce Banner  and bring the items back, here’s how:

  • Click the Page Menu icon in the address bar.
  • A new  Show Hidden Items  option appears. Select it to unhide the items.
  • A confirmation window will appear. Click  Show  if you want to proceed or  Cancel  if you change your mind.
  • The items are re-inserted into the webpage. You can hide them again if you wish.

Since this feature is in beta, Apple is seeking feedback to fine-tune it. You can provide feedback by selecting  Report Distraction Control Issue  in the Page Manu. This will launch the Feedback Assistant app, where you’ll need to sign in with your Apple Account.

iOS/iPadOS 18 beta 5  also updates Safari with Distraction Control. You can learn more about the macOS Sequoia beta and iOS 18 beta and how you can install them in our superguides.

Work begins to remove broken Vineyard Wind turbine blade

  • Colin A. Young, State House News Service

One month since an incident that sent part of a turbine blade plunging into the Atlantic Ocean and littered debris across area beaches, Vineyard Wind said Tuesday that it has cut away much of what remained from the damaged blade and has been cleared to resume some offshore wind construction activities, though it still cannot produce power.

The company said "controlled cutting operations" on Sunday and Monday "removed a substantial amount of the remaining portions of the damaged blade that pose a risk for further debris falling into the ocean." But Vineyard Wind and blade manufacturer GE Vernova are still trying to finalize plans to do more cutting if necessary, secure and remove debris that fell onto the turbine platform, remove the blade root and deal with debris that's settled on the seabed .

GE Vernova, the company selected by Vineyard Wind to manufacture its project's blades and turbines, said last month that it has "no indications of an engineering design flaw" that could have caused the blade failure, but instead thinks it was a result of an issue in the manufacturing process, specifically "insufficient bonding."

Vineyard Wind also announced that the federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, which suspended power production and construction operations at the wind farm about 15 miles off Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket in the wake of the July 13 blade problem, has issued a new order allowing the company to resume limited activities. The developer is allowed to continue the installation of towers and nacelles, the housing that covers the turbine itself. BSEE has not cleared Vineyard Wind to resume any blade installation or power production.

Some of that work was getting underway Tuesday morning. Vineyard Wind said a barge was expected to leave the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal carrying several tower sections, one nacelle and a rack of three blades bound for the offshore wind farm site. But the blades onboard are "solely for the purpose of ensuring safe and balanced composition for the transport" and they will not be installed, the company said. Instead, the barge will return them to New Bedford later this week.

Vineyard Wind has 10 operational turbines that, before federal overseers ordered the halt, were delivering about 136 megawatts of power to the grid. Project leaders plan to scale up to 62 turbines providing 806 MW, and Massachusetts and other states are involved in a years-long process to compel private companies to significantly expand the footprint of offshore wind energy in federally leased areas.

At an event in Mattapan Tuesday, reporters asked Gov. Maura Healey about due diligence before starting operations up again at Vineyard Wind.

"It's under investigation by the federal authorities," Healey said Tuesday. "They need to complete that. I hope they complete that as soon as possible. It's important that we bring this back online. It is a very, very important industry to Massachusetts. It's very important for the clean energy future, and I'm confident we get there."

On Aug. 9, Vineyard Wind released a "blade incident response and action plan" that the company said outlines the steps the parties will follow to recover the remainder of the blade on the turbine. Vineyard Wind said the plan was developed in consultation with the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, which is investigating the incident.

I went on my first safari trip to South Africa. I won't make these 10 mistakes next time.

  • I spent a week on safari in South Africa , visiting three different reserves.
  • I found that planning was essential and that I always needed to have my camera ready.
  • Next time I'd bring warmer clothing and a buff for dust control.

Insider Today

I spent a week on safari in South Africa, visiting three different reserves.

It was a thrilling adventure I'll never forget, and I got to see incredible creatures such as hyenas, elephants, and lions.

It's no wonder more travelers are looking to weave game reserves into their trips. According to the most recent data collected by the travel agency Go2Africa , interest in beach and safari combo trips was up 20% from 2022 to 2023 alone.

But although the trip was great, it wasn't always easy — and I had a few missteps from the planning phase to the wildlife observation.

Here are mistakes I made on my trip that that everyone should avoid on their first safari .

We booked our trip during a busy part of the year.

disable search safari

I try to avoid traveling during holidays , which often means more crowds. Unfortunately, we ended up booking during Easter break, which was the end of summer in the southern hemisphere.

The lodges were full and busy with lots of kids, and the prices were higher. We still had a great time, but if we'd booked different dates — maybe during a low season — we may have paid less for a more private experience.

The mornings were cold, even in summer.

disable search safari

Our morning game drives started before sunrise in an open-air jeep.

The safari guide was wearing shorts, so I thought I would be comfortable matching that. Wrong! I was so cold on our first ride.

I quickly learned that although it was summer, a beanie and down jacket would've been cozy on the drive.

I missed photo opportunities because my camera wasn't ready.

disable search safari

I knew I wanted to keep my camera out at all times when on a game drive. But after several hours of driving, we were approaching the gate and I tucked my phone away.

That's when we turned a corner and saw a large white rhino facing us in the middle of the road. It was a dramatic moment I captured in my head, but I didn't have time to snap a photo before it darted into the bushes.

Next time, I'd be better prepared for animals that might pop up near the exit.

I had no idea how dusty the roads were going to be.

disable search safari

The safari terrain changed based on where the guide drove each day, and some routes were quite dusty.

After a day of exploring, I felt as if I had dust in my ears, eyes, nose, and mouth. Sunglasses helped shield my eyes, but I wish I'd brought a buff to cover the rest of my face.

Driving between game reserves made me more tired than I'd expected.

disable search safari

Our safari adventure included visits to three different wildlife reserves, and we rented a car to get between them.

On each transition day, we had a morning game drive, then a drive to get to the next reserve, and then an evening game drive there.

That was a lot of sitting, and by the time I got to the evening game drive, I was tired. Next time, I may space my schedule out more.

I made the classic mistake of leaving the car door open when unloading the luggage.

disable search safari

At one point, I walked my bags inside my accommodations, leaving the door open behind me. When I came out, the neighbors were taking photos of a monkey inside my car.

He was quick because, fortunately, I didn't have any food in the car for him to run off with.

Now I know to stay on top of shutting and locking my car doors when at a game reserve.

We got too close to elephants.

disable search safari

Animals can be unpredictable and safaris are not like a zoo. I learned how quickly a situation can change while watching a herd of elephants eating in Kruger National Park.

They started crossing the road in front of my car, and a large one turned to look right at us and started shaking his head. It seemed clearly displeased with our presence.

I flipped the car into reverse faster than you can say "elephant," but it was a scary moment.

Consuming too much liquid can be risky.

disable search safari

Evening safari drives include a stop in the bush around sunset for a "sundowner" beverage. One of the nights, my drink proved to be too much liquid for my bladder.

The problem was that we were following a pride of lions, so there was no chance of hopping off the truck to relieve myself.

I was able to hold it, but next time I'll be more careful with the amount of liquid I consume before and during bush drives.

I was caught off guard by load shedding.

disable search safari

Load shedding is the name for scheduled power outages in South Africa that help prevent the power grid from being overloaded.

Some places have backup generators or solar panels to alleviate power disruptions, but I learned not to expect that to always be the case.

When the power turned off during our trip, I found myself sitting in complete darkness. I scrambled for my phone flashlight, but I could've avoided that panic by plugging in the emergency light that was provided.

Has Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk changed dynamics of the war?

The foray into Russia’s borders has surprised Moscow, with analysts saying the attack will change the course of the war.

Building and car damaged after shelling by the Ukrainian side in Kursk, Russia

Russia has asked thousands of its citizens to evacuate from Kursk and neighbouring Belgorod region, days after an unprecedented incursion on its territory by Ukrainian forces – the most significant cross-border attack since Moscow invaded Kyiv in February 2022.

On Saturday night, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that his military was fighting inside Russian territory. The latest fighting has caused thousands of people to flee the border areas. Authorities have declared a “federal-level” state of emergency in the Russian regions of Kursk, Bryansk and Belgorod.

What ukraine’s assault on russia could mean for eu gas supplies, ukraine braces for reprisals as russia sending more troops to kursk, two killed in russian strike on kyiv as ukraine confirms kursk incursion, russia evacuates belgorod district as it eyes ukrainian cross-border threat.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called the incursion a “large-scale provocation” by Ukraine, which has been fighting Moscow forces in its eastern region.

Meanwhile, Ukraine and Russia have blamed each other for the outbreak of fire at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant , which remains under Russian control. The fire has since been put out.

Here’s more about the Kursk incursion and what it means for the war:

Building damaged after shelling by the Ukrainian side in Kursk, Russia

When did Ukrainian troops enter Kursk?

Ukrainian forces launched the Kursk attack on August 6, taking Moscow by surprise. Fighting is under way between Kyiv and Moscow forces in the region.

“We are seeing the Ukrainian operation slowly expanding into neighbouring Belgorod,” said Alex Gatopoulos, Al Jazeera’s defence editor.

The Ukrainian army has taken some border villages in Belgorod, Gatopoulos said, adding that 11,000 people have been ordered to evacuate Belgorod region.

Ukrainian forces are around 30km (18.6 miles) inside Russia, according the Russian Ministry of Defence. The AFP news agency quoted a Ukrainian official as saying that thousands of Ukrainian troops are in Kursk.

Why did Ukraine decide to carry out such an attack, and what is Ukraine’s strategy?

The Ukrainian attack came after weeks of military setbacks in the eastern Donetsk region.

One of the reasons is “to seize the initiative”, Sean Bell, a retired fighter pilot and military analyst , said, explaining that there is a very long border between the two countries and “it’s evident that they can break through”.

Secondly, Ukraine’s move demonstrates that Russia does not control this war alone; “Ukraine is clearly taking the reins here,” Bell said.

Gatopoulos said Ukraine’s strategy with the Kursk attack amounted to a “drone Blitzkrieg” after Ukraine aggressively used first-person view drones that jammed the Russian drones. First-person-view drones are low-cost and usually operated using a screen or virtual reality goggles.

Where did the attack take place?

The attack took place in the town of Sudzha in Kursk located 530km (330 miles) from Moscow. Sudzha has the only pumping station that delivers Russian natural gas to Europe through Ukraine.

Kursk is in western Russia, at the border with Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy city.

INTERACTIVE-ATTACK ON KURSK_ISW

How will the attack affect the Russia-Ukraine war?

The attack has raised questions on how Ukraine was able to attack Kursk so easily after two years of intense fighting.

Military analyst Bell told Al Jazeera that the attack can change the course of the war. While critics deemed Ukraine’s surprise attack reckless, “momentum and initiative is everything in warfare; this caught everybody off guard”, Bell explained.

The Ukrainian attack forced Russia to take troops from the front line, where they have been advancing to Ukraine’s Donetsk, and deploy them at Kursk, relieving pressure from the front line for Ukraine, Bell added.

To maintain its current position in Kursk, Ukraine will have to send more troops, tanks and resources, Gatopoulos said.

While there is a possibility that Russian forces will outnumber and defeat Ukraine, if Ukraine persists, “it would be a great bargaining chip in peace negotiations”, he said.

If the Ukrainian mission fails, “it will be a morale blow rather than a morale boost” for Kyiv, Gatopoulos said.

What has been Russia’s reaction?

Russia hit back militarily, deploying its own troops to quash the incursion. Additionally, Russian forces shot down 35 drones over the Kursk, Voronezh, Belgorod, Bryansk and Oryol regions on Sunday night.

Ukrainian officials said on Sunday that Russian air attacks killed five people including a four-year-old boy and his father just east of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

Russia has also evacuated civilians in border cities and declared a state of emergency in Kursk. The Russian state broadcaster said that 20 temporary accommodation centres were set up, airing footage of a tent camp in Kursk.

Officials from Russia have implied that the Ukraine attack had foreign backing.

“We have no doubt that the organisers and perpetrators of these crimes, including their foreign curators, will bear responsibility for them,” said Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said on Wednesday that the United States was not made aware of Ukraine’s plans to attack Kursk.

Why is Belarus deploying forces to Ukraine border?

Belarus announced on Saturday that it was sending its forces to the border with Ukraine, claiming Ukraine violated Belarusian airspace during its Kursk incursion.

Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko said Belarusian air defence forces destroyed thousands of Ukrainian targets flying over eastern Belarus’s Mogilev.

Viktor Khrenin, the country’s defence minister, announced that Ukraine’s violation of the Belarus airspace is indicative of a provocation and is “ready for retaliatory action”.

What happened at the Zaporizhzhia power plant?

On Sunday, Ukrainian official reported that a fire had broken out at the cooling tower of the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia power plant in southern Ukraine. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations nuclear watchdog, said that the fire has not caused an impact on safety.

According to Russian state media, the fire has been extinguished.

Zelenskyy accused Russia of the fire, while Moscow blamed it on Kyiv.

“These reckless attacks endanger nuclear safety at the plant and increase the risk of a nuclear accident. They must stop now,” said Rafael Grossi, chief of IAEA in a statement, without blaming either side.

  • The browser will stop sending the search engine your partial search terms as you type them.
  • The search engine won’t send Safari search suggestions to show in the results list below the search and address field.

How to remove an auto-complete suggestion from Safari

While Safari’s auto-complete suggestions when entering search terms in Safari’s address bar are frequently useful, Safari keeps making these annoying auto-complete suggestions that may be sites I visited years ago, but are no longer relevant to what I’m doing now. Is there any way to access where these auto-complete suggestions are stored in Safari and remove selected sites I am no longer interested in?

Using macOS 13.2.1, Safari 16.3

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 13.2

Thanks destiny241, but it sounds like turning off Show Siri Suggestions in Safari will stop all auto-complete suggestions in Safari - Yes?

Safari’s auto-complete suggestions when entering search terms in the address bar are frequently useful. I was wondering if there is any way I can remove just the sites that keep getting filled in to auto-complete that are no longer relevant to me.

  • safari address bar re-opens after search When I search from the address bar in Safari, the address bar opens with a list of autocomplete suggestions generated from my search engine, bookmarks, history, etc. This is very helpful. If I ignore those suggestions and simply hit "enter", Safari loads my search engine of choice to search for that term (which is great and exactly what I want). However, at that point, the address bar re-opens to display suggestions again, which obscures the page! Why in the world would the search suggestions re-open after I have completed a search, and is there any way to disable this behavior? 712 7

(see picture) It is not part of the default so should be possible to reset it.... • Popups in Safari I am often getting popups (see attachment) when I search something in Safari. It is like a small insert screen giving me a short description of the subject, with links to websites. It is not a big deal on my iMac, as I can click to the side and get rid of it. But, when it happens on my iPhone or iPad I do not have that option and cannot go any further, unless I click on the link, which does me no good. Does anyone have an idea how I stop this from happening? Thanks! 341 2

While there's not a list that you could modify in that way, the results you see are based on your browsing history, so it might help to clear that if you haven't tried it already. Check out this link for the steps: Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac - Apple Support

"Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac

You can remove all records that Safari keeps of where you’ve browsed during a period of time you choose. If your Mac and your other Apple devices  have Safari turned on in iCloud settings , your browsing history is removed from all of them. Clearing your browsing history in Safari doesn’t clear any browsing histories kept independently by websites you visited.

Hello agd21,

You can disable Siri Suggestions for Safari on Mac with the following related steps: How Siri Suggestions work on Mac - Apple Support

Customize Siri Suggestions
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu   > System Settings, then click Siri & Spotlight   in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. On the right, click Siri Suggestions & Privacy.
3. Select apps in the list to turn “Show Siri Suggestions in [ app ]” or “Learn from this application” on or off.

Disabling Safari in Siri Suggestions should stop it from auto-populating these websites moving forward.

Let us know if that solves the issue for you.

Thank you, ryane77.

Clearing browsing history seems to have worked. I suppose all the sites I wanted to keep are also now removed from auto-complete suggestions so I will just have to have them repopulated as Siri Suggestions as I visit the sites going forward.
