What To Do In St Kitts On A Cruise | 9 Amazing St Kitts Cruise Excursions
Wondering what to do in St Kitts on a cruise? From scenic railways and zip-lining, to learning about the island’s history – these are the best things to do in St Kitts.
Earlier this year I was lucky enough to spend a full week on the magical island of St Kitts . I ate (lots), snorkelled, zip-lined, explored the island’s history and drank buckets full of rum punch.
I know that many of you visit as cruise ship passengers, with the likes of Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Princess Cruises, and before you reach the island you’ll be offered a variety of interesting St Kitts cruise excursions. It might feel overwhelming as there are so many great options. When deciding what to do in St Kitts on a cruise, you need to have a think about your overall cruise ship itinerary, to figure out which islands are best for which activities.
In terms of St Kitts cruise excursions, you could take a relaxing trip through the countryside on the island’s famous scenic railway, enjoy some of the best things to do in Basseterre, take a trip up to the historic Brimstone Hill Fortress, relax at a beach club or enjoy something a little more active, perhaps zip-lining or snorkelling.
So if you only have a few hours on dry land, what excursions should you do? Well, after docking in Basseterre and taking St Kitts cruise port’s advice to “Rush Slowly”(!) here are a few suggestions of things to do in St Kitts on a cruise…
Get a flavour of St Kitts in my video and scroll down to find out some of the top things to do.
What To Do In St Kitts On A Cruise – Best St Kitts Cruise Excursions
1. ride the st kitts scenic railway.
Built between 1912 and 1926 to transport sugar cane, the St Kitts Scenic Railway now takes tourists on a sightseeing trip around this rugged and beautiful island. The 3-hour, 30-mile journey offers some of the most spectacular views of the coastline, Mount Liamuiga (the island’s dormant volcano), the old sugar plantations and small Caribbean towns.
Plus once on board, you’ll have access to an all-inclusive bar serving delicious frozen cocktails. Pina colada anyone? This is one of the most popular St Kitts cruise excursions, and it’s a fun way to see the island.
2. St Kitts rainforest tour
If you’re a nature lover and wondering what to do in St Kitts on a cruise, let me remind you that the Caribbean isn’t JUST about beaches! St Kitts is home to an incredible thick rainforest just waiting to be explored.
The best way to get to know it is on a rainforest trek with O’Neil who’s lived on the island all of his life. I’d honestly say this is one of the best thing to do in St Kitts if you’re visiting by cruise ship, as it’s a wonderful contrast to life at sea.
He’ll help you spot monkeys, tell you which trees will bring you luck, the plants that can cure disease and once you’re done with that – you can find a vine for your finest Tarzan swing!
3. Arts And Crafts At Romney Manor
If you’re an artistic type, and wondering about the best things to do in St Kitts on a cruise, you’ll love Romney Manor.
Learn how to weave colourful fabrics and make traditional Batik shawls at this former plantation-turned-crafts-centre and home to world-famous crafters Caribelle Batik.
Wander the tropical gardens and take a tour of the premises, watching artists in action creating colourful throws, quilts and scarves in the traditional way.
After having a look around, head to the gift shop and buy some souvenirs. I promise that no two pieces are the same!
4. Visit The Beautiful Cockleshell Bay
Located on the south side of St Kitts is Cockleshell Bay, a charming little beach with monkeys strutting across the sand, and the delicious scents of Caribbean jerk chicken wafting from rustic barbecue shacks.
The water here is crystal clear, warm and shallow, with small waves lapping the shore. Oh and if you want to see St Kitts’s little neighbour, you can look across The Narrows (small strait) to the island of Nevis.
5. Learn About The History Of St Kitts
There are historic landmarks scattered all over the island, so it’s understandable that one of the most popular St Kitts cruise excursions is to take an island tour and learn about the past.
Once the richest of all the English colonies in the Caribbean, the island’s economy was built on rum and sugar. You’ll see evidence of this former industry as you pass old sugar plantations and chimneys.
Some, like Ottley’s Plantation Inn, have been converted into hotels and restaurants so you can get right up close to the island’s history.
For something different, head to Brimstone Hill Fortress (a must do in St Kitts). It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 800ft up. Not only is it a great place to soak up the island’s history, you can also enjoy the panoramic views beyond the huge canons.
If you’re only visiting for a day, perhaps on of the St Kitts cruise excursions, consider booking a tour like this one , designed to show you all the key sights in a short time.
6. Relax Into Caribbean Life
After all those days on the cruise ship, let loose with a beach day! Head to Cockleshell Bay where you can take your pick of activities, including jet skiing, stand up paddle-boarding and kayaking at St Kitts Water Sports . When you get hungry, grab a bite to eat and a frozen cocktail at Reggae Beach Bar . There’s a really fun vibe on this beach, and it’s a popular option if you’re visiting for the day, as it’s one of the best beaches in St Kitts (near cruise port in Basseterre).
If you’re more excited to see what’s happening below the water, you could hop on board a catamaran with Blue Water Safaris St Kitts . This was one of my favourite things to do in St Kitts when I visited. There’s an incredible underground world you forget about, and the water is so clear. Dive in and see!
They’ll take you snorkelling with turtles and tropical fish, and even show you a very mysterious shipwreck. If you’re lucky, you might even stop off on the island of Nevis.
7. Visit Old Road Colonial Settlement
If you’re keen to turn back the clock and see what the historic Caribbean looked like, then visiting the settlement of Old Road on the west side of the island is a must. Known as the oldest British colonial settlement in the Caribbean, Old Road dates back to 1624, when the town was founded by Englishman James Warner. He was attracted to St Kitts by the abundance of tobacco plants. There’s a nostalgic, maritime feel to the town – a big contrast to the capital Basseterre where you’ll find St. Kitts cruise port.
8. Adventure Along The St Kitts Zip Line
Along with walking, snorkelling and swimming… in St Kitts you can zip-line! Head to Sky Safari Tours and scream at the top of your lungs as you fly over the thick forest. There are 6 zip-lines in total, with the final one a race against your partner.
If you’re travelling with kids, this is one of the St Kitts cruise excursions to pick. No doubt you’ll be a lot more scared than they are! They’ll absolutely love zooming through the air.
9. Visit Frigate Bay In St Kitts
Many who visit the Caribbean by cruise ship get bundled off on tours, but sometimes it’s nice to do your own thing. If you don’t fancy one of the St Kitts cruise excursions, hop in a taxi from the cruise port to Frigate Bay.
This fun bay is dotted with rum and reggae bars galore. Check out the best beach bars and party hotspots, including the well-known Mr X’s Shiggidy Shack. This was another of my favourite things to do in St Kitts. There’s a really local, authentic vibe, and it wasn’t overrun with people. It’s a nice place to mix with the locals and soak up some of the Caribbean spirit too, literally in some cases!
On South Frigate Bay, you can take a dip in the warm, shallow waters of the Caribbean, or head over to the northern edge, where you’ll find bigger waves, hotels such as the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, and the greens of the Royal St Kitts Golf Club. Though not far from each other, the two sides of the bay feel like polar opposites – and I’d recommend exploring both of them if you have time when you’re planning what to do in St Kitts on a cruise.
If you’re looking for somewhere delicious to eat during your visit to St Kitts, check out the best restaurants in St Kitts here .

The Essential St. Kitts Tour Review
If you have never been to St. Kitts, like us, and you are into history and culture then this Essentials of St. Kitts tour is highly recommend. The tour includes about 30 minutes at Romney

Basseterre, st. kitts.
Highlight : What’s cooler than standing on top of Fort George Citadel at the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, looking over the Caribbean as you pretend to fire a 300 year old cannon at the invading armies. The fort has a variety of museum exhibits that portray life on the island in the 1700s. Great architectural remains and fantastic views are sure to impress.
What’s Missing: The tour includes a great narration of the highlights on the island, but it is done while driving in the tour bus making it difficult to get a glimpse at everything and even more difficult to take pictures of the structures such as Berkeley Memorial Clock and the St. George’s Anglican Church. There were only two “stops” on this trip-the Fortress and Romney Manor.
Main Takeaway: If you have never been to St. Kitts, like us, and you are into history and culture then this tour is highly recommend. The tour includes about 30 minutes at Romney Manor and about 45 minutes at Brimstone Hill Fortress to explore at your leisure. The total tour takes only a few hours allowing you to see and experience most of the major attractions, while still affording the opportunity to walk around the shops and open air market at Port Zante or venture into downtown Basseterre.
Complete The Essential St. Kitts Tour Review
It is a bright and beautiful morning in st. kitts.
One reason we decided to do our 2014 Independence of the Seas 8 day Eastern Caribbean cruise was the opportunity to visit St. Kitts. We had never been to the island but from what we had heard, cruisers simply love it. After our brief stop, we feel the same way and can’t wait to return to St. Kitts to explore the island some more on Adventure of the Seas this August 2015!
DB and the Princess at the St. Kitts Welcome Center Near the Ship
Port Zante is where the cruise ships dock. The very bright yellow cruise building can’t be missed. The port is small with only two piers, so no more than two cruise ships can dock at the same time. The size is one of the things we liked most, as the newer port terminal was clean and not overly crowded.
Upon walking off the ship, we took our customary photos then headed over to our meeting location for this shore excursion. With only 10 or so minutes before our tour was about to start, we were given colored wrist bands and directed to wait in a line. Before long, we were escorted to an air conditioned bus where we met our tour guide, and we were off on The Essential St. Kitts Tour !
Trip through the Center of Basseterre to Romney Manor
Exiting the port and a few quick turns, you are in Independence Square. The park is surrounded by a number of important government and social buildings including the Co-Cathedral of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. This area is aptly named Independence Square as it was once home to the slave market on St. Kitts.
Police Station in downtown Basseterre
Next en route, the bus made its way by the Police Station, with its easy to spot red door, and through a mini-financial district- by that I mean a bunch of banks. It then entered the roundabout-which is referred to as the circus- that contains the Berkeley Memorial Clock. This clock is one of the most recognizable sites in St. Kitts and is popular with both tourists and locals. It was built in honor of a famous politician on the island. While we did not get to stop, I was able to nab a photo of the landmark through the bus window.
A Photo – Sort of – Berkeley Memorial Clock
The bus continued its journey, making its way past the government building, St. George’s Anglican Church, and Warner Park, home to the country sport of cricket. We made a loop around to Bay Road which hugs the water where we were able to see some egrets. Driving for only a few minutes more, we were at Wingfield Estates. This architectural site was home to the first working estate, tilling tobacco, sugar, and rum. Again, our bus did not stop, but I attempted to grab a few pictures of the remains through the window.
Entering Wingfield States
Caribelle batik at romney manor….what exactly is that.
Finally, we had arrived at our first stop, Romney Manor . Go ahead and get the bad Mitt Romney jokes out the way!
DB in front of the Saman Tree
Romney Manor is a 10-acre site that is home to magnificent gardens and natural landscapes, including the 350 year old Saman tree that consumes over ½ acre of the property. We were able to walk around the estate and get some great pictures of the gardens and back drop.
Gardens at Romney Manor
We then entered the manor to learn a little bit about Caribelle Batik. To be honest, we were half paying attention during the presentation (hey, at least I’m honest), but it appeared to be a very intricate and time consuming process that involves dye and wax. While they did look pretty, I could not tell the difference between these handmade batiks and machine made clothing.
By this time, we were closing in on thirty minutes, the time allotted by our tour guide, so we made our way back to the bus. Many more tour buses had lined the parking area since our arrival, but we were able to locate our bus without difficulty. Other fellow passengers were trickling back as well but of course, there would be a couple of older ladies with no regard for time that ended up delaying our bus. The driver and fellow passengers were getting a bit annoyed, and someone (I swear it was not me) might have even mumbled something like “just leave them”. Eventually, they showed up with some bags of merchandise and no apology for being late. With all of us now boarded, it was on to our next stop, Brimstone Hill Fortress.
Let’s Blow This Sucker Right out of the Water
The ride to the Brimstone Hill National Park took about another thirty minutes or so. During this drive, the tour guide spoke about modern day St. Kitts and answered questions from the crowd. Apparently, any foreigner can become a citizen of St. Kitts if they make a charitable donation of about 300K to the government (U.S.D). Guess the Princess and I will remain just visitors of the island!
Getting Ready to Ascend The Hill
Reaching the park, our bus began its ascent to the top where the fortress is located. This road is extremely narrow and winding—a driving nightmare—but our driver handled it like a pro. At one point, the bus was not able to make the tight turn so needed to back up before reattempting, making the Princess a bit nervous as she was sure we were going to fall right off the side of the mountain. At another point, we needed to pull off the road to allow another bus going in the opposite direction to pass. Good thing these drivers do this every day!
Along the way, we encountered many vervet monkeys which were transported during the African slave trade and are now populous in St. Kitts. I was able to grab a few shots through the bus window.
This Little Guy Was Just Enjoying a Roadside Snack
During the final ascent to the fortress, there are a series of very narrow archways through which the bus must pass. By the looks of the opening, there was no way our bus was going to make it without hitting one of the sides. Commenting on how they gave him the brand new bus, our driver was able to maneuver through the narrow space without a scratch, making it look effortless.
A Tight Squeeze Passing Through the Gates
Arriving at the massive fortress, I was already excited. This place was just awesome! The Princess, on the other hand, was focused on the steep climb ahead of us to get to the top.
The construction of the fort took over a hundred years and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage, a site of historical, cultural, and architectural significance. There are several areas of the fort and with only 45 minutes to explore everything, I made sure the Princess and I hustled to get as much in as possible.
The Main Fort – Fort George
Instead of heading first to the main attraction, Fort George Citadel, we made our way to ruins that were adjacent to the bus. These were the remains of Fort Charlotte, the location which once included the Governor’s quarters on the fortress. Currently, all you can see are the four pillars of what was once part of the fort’s structure.
To our left was a long, narrow building whose roof line was ground level to our parking areas. These were the officers’ quarters. We actually did not have time to walk down to see the inside of this building.
A View of Saint Eustatius from atop Fort George
Given our time was limited, we then made our way over to Fort George to climb what seemed like a never ending flight of stairs, but getting to the top was well worth it. There, you could see clearly out to the Caribbean and the closest island Saint Eustatius. Other attractions in Fort George included the cannons that had the firepower to reach ships out at sea. A man and his toys—who wouldn’t want to load up one of these cannons and let something fly!
A Signature DB Pose – Ready. Aim. Fire.
This site also contains the Fort George Museum. The museum includes a variety of exhibits that depicted the life of the soldiers who lived there as well as the inhabitants of the island. We did not have a chance to go through all of the exhibits, and actually a few of them were closed for refurbishment.
Taking many pictures on top of the fort and in the museum complex, we were running out of time. We began our trek back down the stairs, and I made a quick jaunt over to see the remains of the Prince of Wales Bastion, while the Princess stayed behind to capture a photo of me at this area. Mostly rumble now, this was one of main centers for protecting the port and contained enough firepower to reach invading ships at sea.
DB off in the Distance at the Bastion
With time almost up, we made a quick stop into the gift shop which was very small and had nothing really worth purchasing, so we headed back to the bus. Wouldn’t you know it, the same two ladies felt the need to keep their streak alive being the last ones back on the bus, AGAIN!
Back to the Ship We Go
Taking the same winding road down from the fort, we were on our way back to the ship.
Along the drive, the driver made a weird detour into what was mostly a residential area. The streets were a bit narrow, and he had to navigate around many parked cars. He described this as a newer neighborhood and an example of modern architecture and lifestyle of the more affluent Kittians. Maybe it was just us, but we thought this was a bit voyeuristic.
Back on the main road, we could see our ship off in the distance. A few turns more and we passed the Carib Brewery , home to the St. Kitts official beer. Back at the port, I would grab one—hey, it was afternoon by now. It tasted like a Budweiser to me.
Arriving Back at the Port
We arrived back at Port Zante just before 1pm. We said thank you to our driver with a well-deserved gratuity and entered the port area to do some bartering—I mean shopping—before getting back on board the ship.
The Essential St. Kitts tour was a great introduction to a beautiful island which we are happy to be visiting again soon!

It is time for some fun in the sun in St. Kitts with 2 beach options! Enjoy one of the famous beaches in St. Kitts and 2 miles of white sand! You will also stop at the famous Timothy Hill, this is where the Atlantic is on your left and the Caribbean is on your right for a great photo opportunity!
Start this St. Kitts Beach Day Pass Excursion by meeting with your guide outside your St. Kitts cruise port, just a 5- 5-minute walk away. Then you'll be shown to your air-conditioned van that will take you to Cockleshell Beach (approximately a 25-minute drive). But first, you'll stop at Timothy Hill for some great shots to help you remember the day and make your friends at home a bit jealous. Timothy Hill is located on the tip of the southern peninsula of St. Kitts island. It is a grassy hill that overlooks where the Atlantic and the Caribbean meet here and the views are one of a kind. You can see the neighboring sister island of Nevis as well. The island is located just off the coast and located on the Narrows, the channel that runs between the two islands.
Then it's on to the beach on Cockleshell Beach, a local and tourist favorite alike. This is the location of two of the most popular beach clubs in St. Kitts - Spice Mill Restaurant and Reggae Beach Bar. You will have your choice of which of the two you would like to spend the day at, depending on the space available. Whichever you choose, you'll receive a welcome drink (fruit punch or rum punch) and be given a lounge chair to rent for $5.00 USD. You can also rent umbrellas for an additional $15.00 USD each. There will be food (burgers, sandwiches, salads, seafood) and beverages available (including premium and local beers, soft drinks, bottled water, and blended drinks) to purchase at your own expense as well.
Just kick back and soak in the natural beauty and the views of the aqua-blue water and Nevis Island. Stroll the 2 miles of powdery white, soft sand along the crescent-shaped beach. If you prefer, there is also a variety of activities available (at extra cost), such as parasailing, jet ski rental, snorkeling, kayaks, and more! Take a dip in the shallow, warm water of Cockleshell Bay. Enjoy your vacation!
Once your St. Kitts Beach Excursion comes to an end, you'll be returned to your St. Kitts cruise ship meeting point.
What is included?
- Round-trip transportation from your St. Kitts cruise ship terminal.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Tour - Safari Island Drive
Fabulous Tour and very engaging tour guide. Christian spent 3+ hours giving us such amazing information of the island, visited Romney Manor and beautiful gardens, able to see ladies doing batik art on fabric. I had no idea the number of hours and multiple times it takes to create such beautiful designs on fabric. This tour is well worth the money. Great experience.
Tangerine tours was one of the best island tours we have ever taken. It had just the right amount of stops along with the driving. The rum punch was an added bonus. Highly recommend this tour!
Best day seeing the whole island with many beverage(rum punch, beer, water, coke and rum) included. Cost $30usd per person. Went to the top of a mountain and around the whole island seeing all the highlits with much informative commentary.
From our Celebrity cruise we took the tour with Christian. For over three hours he talked about present day St. Kitts as well as its history. It is a country with a sad history, and it is only 37 years ago that it became independent. We learned about the flora and fauna of the country as well. It is one of the best tours we have experienced.
We cruised with Marella Discovery and booked an excursion. We were happy that Christian was leading this excursion. He knew so much about the islands history, birds, wildlife and how to have a joke. Halfway through the island tour he broke out the rum and gave me several extras! We can’t wait to go back and visit and we’ll certainly be booking through Christian!
This was a excursion thru Royal Caribbean Cruise line. Our tour guide Christian, was absolutely the best tour guide ever. He was so knowledgeable of the history of the Island as well as the all the various plants, trees, flowers etc. He had a awesome sense of humor through out the entire tour. We stopped at 4 different sights and were able to spend some time at each one. The tour was $75pp which was some of the best money spent. We were able to take photos all along the way, and try his rum punch, which was quite yummy. It was a 4 hour tour, that I would happily do again!!!! If you truly want an educational, funny, exciting tour of St. Kitts, this is the one to do!!!

Royal's excursions in St. Kitts

We've booked the Oasis for May of 2025 and one of the stops is St. Kitts. We've been there before and have thoroughly enjoyed ziplining. However, I don't see this on our shore excursion page (there are several other excursions already listed). So, my 2 questions are:
1. Anyone been to St. Kitts recently or is due to go shortly and see this as an available Royal excursion?
2. Do you think it's not there because we are still over a year out?
Thanks very much, and Happy New Year to all.

Yes, most likely too early for items to show up in cruise planner.
If you want to do your own thing, we love this beach club

There are 2 or 3 beaches in this same area. You can walk out of port area and negotiate a round trip taxi ride with a local instead of asking the tour salesmen at the port.

Agree...you are way to early.
We'll be on Icon May 2024 and it's showing the zipline for St Kitts...$124.00pp
I got these from tripadvisor. I suggest you do some homework before booking anything!!! But these will give you an idea of what is available:

I can tell you that I tried the volcano hike and couldn't keep up. I can also tell you that there is a recently built house on the site of the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton.
(I don't know if this was helpful but I just had to answer a Maryland Basketball fan's post!)

well I did an excursion over to Nevis and the beach stop was a mess. Vendors would not leave us alone and over begged. It was near the Lime beach club.

We really liked the carambola beach club also. IT's very close to Timothy Hill, so you should stop there briefly too if you are creating your own independent excursion.

We have used Grey's Island Tours - wanted to see the fort and the batik factory. Was a small van and we had a nice day.

Yes, we have been there. Both times our taxi drivers stopped there to allow us to take photos. Beautiful views!
Shoreexcursioneer and shoreexcursionsgroup will have excursions available, although this far out it is possible to get cancelations.
