Fuel Cost Calculator

This calculator can estimate fuel cost according to the distance of a trip, the fuel efficiency of the car, and the price of gas using various units.

Related Gas Mileage Calculator | Mileage Calculator

The price of gas may go up or down, but it's always a major expense for most drivers. The average American driver spends about $3,000 per year on gas, according to the American Automobile Association. Some of the practical ways to reduce fuel costs are listed below.

Use public transportation

Walking or biking does not consume fuel, and as such does not accumulate fuel cost. In most cases, public transport alternatives to cars such as buses, trains, and trolleys are viable options of reducing fuel costs. Due to the communal nature of ride sharing, the fuel costs of operating public transport are generally less than the fuel costs associated with each individual operating their own vehicle. In some places, public transport is free. Considering the costs associated with owning or renting a car creates even more incentive to use other modes of transportation.

Also known as car sharing, carpooling is the arrangement between two or more people to travel to a shared destination in a single vehicle. Although a heavier car consumes slightly more fuel, it is usually much more efficient than two people driving separate cars towards the same destination.

Use a more fuel efficient vehicle

Driving a smaller car makes a great difference – the fuel cost is about half for a small sedan than for a very large SUV. Similarly, drive with a less powerful engine than you need. Don't pay for an eight-cylinder engine when four cylinders work just fine. Unless you're hauling heavy loads on a routine basis, the extra cost of a bigger engine results in more money spent on gasoline.

Tune the engine

A properly tuned engine maximizes power and can greatly enhance fuel efficiency. But tuning the car engine is often done to increase horsepower – that's not the way to save on fuel. Make sure the tuner gets the message.

Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent – this amount will vary depending on the nature of the repair.

Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.

Placing ornaments and ground effects, aerodynamics kits, and airfoils, such as deck-lid spoilers, may make you feel good, but they also increase the car's drag and make it require more fuel. Such accessories offer no real handling enhancements, although they may look nice on your car. Also, place signs or cargo on the roof so that the object angles forward. This will reduce the frontal area of the object, and it will cause less drag, and cause you to use less fuel.

Adjust tires

Make sure the tires are inflated to the right levels. Properly inflated tires can reduce fuel consumption by up to 3 percent. Your tires also lose about 1 PSI per month, and when the tires are cold (e.g., in the winter), their pressure will decrease due to the thermal contraction of the air. It is recommended to check tires at least monthly, preferably weekly. Having properly inflated tires will also help you avoid uneven wear on the tread.

Gas stations don't always have accurate equipment for this purpose. Sometimes gas stations use automatic air compressors that stop at a pre-determined level. To make sure you inflate to the right level, double-check pressure with your own gauge.

Recommended inflation pressures are for cold tires; put about 3 PSI more in if the tires have been driven on a while. Inflate to the pressure recommended by the car manufacturer, not to the level stamped on the tire.

Use the correct motor oil

Gas mileage will improve by 1 percent to 2 percent if you use the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil. For example, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine designed to use 5W-30 can reduce your gas mileage by a considerable amount. Using 5W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-20 can lower your gas mileage by 1 percent to 2 percent. Also, look for motor oil that says "Energy Conserving" on the API performance symbol to be sure it contains friction-reducing additives.

Plan trips carefully

There is no more obvious way to save gas than to drive a shorter distance.

Plan your route carefully. With today's GPS route planners, it's easy to calculate a straight route with the fewest stops and diversions. It is also possible to judge which route will have the least traffic. Take highways instead of local routes or city streets when possible – the steady speed maximizes fuel efficiency.

When driving in a city, try to park in a central location, and then walk from one appointment to another, or take public transportation. Ragged stop-and-go city driving is terrible for your gas mileage. This also saves the high level of gas used in parking and pulling out in a parking lot.

Factors that determine the fuel price

Government intervention.

Governments may intervene in gasoline (referred to as petrol in some parts of the world) markets by taxation, which may raise prices for consumers within or outside the governmental territory. Similarly, certain industries may receive financial support from the government to promote commercial enterprise (a subsidy). Generally, subsidized products or services can be sold at lower prices.

Financial markets

The global oil price fluctuates constantly. The key crudes quoted are Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) in the unit of US$ per barrel. The retail fuel price is closely related to the global oil price fluctuation.

Political elements such as structure, regime, personnel, and events can all affect the cost of fuel. For instance, a change in leadership from a leader who doesn't believe in climate change to one who does may result in changes to the cost of fuel for consumers based on different policies, such as choosing not to subsidize fuel. Political relationships between countries are also a factor; nations can go to war over resources, or form alliances in order to trade, both of which can affect the cost of fuel.

Geographic area

Certain geographical areas or countries in the world have an abundance of oil, while others do not have a single drop. Regional consumers within close proximity of high supplies of oil are more likely to have lower costs of fuel due to ease of access. Areas without their own supply of oil that are isolated from the rest of the world (such as islands in the Pacific) can find fuel to be relatively expensive.

Natural disaster or weather

Earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, major floods, and other such nature-related phenomena can affect the production, manufacturing, and logistics of gasoline, which can possibly affect the price of fuel. For instance, a snowstorm may close certain roads, disallowing the transportation of the resource and driving up fuel costs in these areas. Hurricanes or earthquakes can damage oil refineries, abruptly halting production, which can also eventually increase fuel costs.

If you’re looking to cut down how much you spend on gas, Natural Resources has tips for more fuel-efficient driving:

• Accelerate gently

• Drive at a steady speed (50-80km per hour is the most efficient range for many vehicles)

• Coast to decelerate

• Avoid idling

• Avoid carrying unnecessary weight

• Limit the use of air conditioning and other powered accessories

• Limit all-wheel and four-wheel drive

Data for the calculator comes from Natural Resources Canada, which publishes fuel efficiency figures for most makes and models of cars sold in Canada. The calculator assumes a combination of city and highway driving for determining fuel efficiency, so costs will be higher if you drive primarily in a city, where fuel efficiency tends to be lower.

Genuinely good idea!

Saw it on TikTok and plugged in a couple roadtrips I’ve already taken this year to gauge the accuracy and it was dead on. Definitely gonna use it for my upcoming trip, I like being able to plan ahead and this is perfect for it.

Low effort app, could use some work!

This is a very user-friendly app that definitely does what it is intended for but it’s not worth it. I saw an ad from the creator on TikTok that said the app is free, which it is, for a one week trial. There are other engines out there that do the same calculations and take more into account (ie. specific gas stations, change in gas prices, allow you to search more specific vehicles) for 100% free.

Beautifully designed app

Hard to find apps nowadays that are so straightforward at their task. Roadtrip is beautifully designed and isn’t bloated with extra features you won’t use. Simple and clean!

Another popular feature of the app is its rerouting tool. When the app notices traffic back up ahead, it will notify you of the situation and offer alternative routes. 5. Google Maps (Destination Finder)

Google Maps

Suppose you’re directionally changed, like me. Using Google Maps to get around a new city is a game changer. The app isn’t just for driving navigation and can be used when getting around on foot or by bike. And if your location history has been enabled, the app will even give you destination recommendations based on places you’ve previously visited. In addition, Google Maps will let you share your location and download maps offline if you know you’ll have spotty service.

6. GasBuddy (Best Gas Prices)

GasBuddy app

GasBuddy is a fuel savings app that uses your location to help you locate cheap gas. You can also sign up for a free Pay with GasBuddy card to save even more at the pump. Here’s how it works.

Once you receive the card in the mail, you will connect it to your bank account. Next, you’ll use the app to unlock deals. Then, when you are ready to fill up, you use your GasBuddy card instead of your debit card. When you do this, you’ll receive up to 25 cents off per gallon, and if you upgrade to their premium account, you can get up to 40 cents off per gallon. The GasBuddy card works at 95% of gas stations in the U.S.

7. Flush (Toilet Finder)

Flush app

And this app isn’t just for those in the U.S.; it helps you find toilets worldwide!

8. Trabee Pocket (Budget Tracker)

Trabee Pocket

The Trabee Pocket app was designed specifically for tracking your spending while traveling. The app allows you to enter pre-trip costs, add on-the-go costs, categorize your purchases, and show you how much you’ve spent via a pie graph. And if you don’t want to hold on to your paper receipt, you can take photos and upload them to the app.

When your road trip is over, you can export your expense details to a PDF or even a CSV file that you can open in Microsoft Excel. This simple-to-use expense tracker is great for budget-conscious road-trippers looking to watch their spending!

9. HotelTonight (Last-Minute Stays)

HotelTonight

If you’re looking for last-minute hotel deals, HotelTonight is your app. Perfect for road trips, this app is ideal for those who decide, unplanned, that they want to stay the night in town before moving on to their next destination. So how does it work?

HotelTonight partners with hotels to help them fill up their unreserved rooms. In return, they can offer deep discounts to get those rooms filled. And although the app advertises last-minute accommodations, you can also book stays up to 100 days in advance. Be careful, though! Because these are great deals, you probably won’t get a refund for a cancellation or the ability to request a different type of room.

10. Guide Along (Audio Tours)

Guide Along app

Guide Along , formerly known as GyPsy Guide, is a GPS-narrated audio tour app that will give you information about your current location. While driving or walking, the app will suggest local tips and tell you about things to do and see around you. It’s a personal tour guide at your fingertips! The app lets you download and play tours offline if you know you’ll have lousy cell service in an area.

Planning a Labor Day weekend road trip? Here's what to expect from gas prices

Missouri drivers planning a road trip for Labor Day may have more to celebrate than just the long weekend: prices at the gas pump.

The average gas price for regular, unleaded fuel in Missouri was $3.04 per gallon on Thursday, according to AAA Gas Prices . This is seven cents lower than last Thursday and 46 cents less than one year ago.

Gas prices are dropping because crude oil prices are fluctuating. However, according to a news release from AAA, gas prices may reverse after the holiday weekend, as the Energy Information Administration estimates a fuel demand of 9.30 million barrels per day.

Of Missouri's metropolitan areas, Columbia is the second most expensive city for gas and Springfield is the sixth. As of Thursday, the average price for regular, unleaded fuel in Columbia was $3.14 and in Springfield it was $2.91, according to AAA Gas Prices.

Missouri was the ninth cheapest state for fueling up on Thursday, as the national average for regular, unleaded fuel was $3.36 . This is 46 cents cheaper than last year.

Gas prices, as of Thursday, were highest in Hawaii ($4.65 per gallon), California ($4.63 per gallon), Washington ($4.17 per gallon), Nevada ($3.97 per gallon) and Oregon ($3.79 per gallon), according to AAA Gas Prices .

Drivers can stay informed with real-time gas prices through the AAA mobile app, available for App and Android products. Drivers can use the app to map a route, learn traffic conditions, find gas discounts, locate parking, and request and track AAA roadside assistance. The mobile app is free to download.

Gas prices are down. We could be headed for lows not seen since 2021

If you’re planning to squeeze in one last summer road trip over the coming Labor Day weekend, it won’t cost as much to fill up your tank compared to a few months ago.

The national average for a gallon of regular has fallen more than 20 cents since May and is now at $3.38 — about 47 cents lower than this time a year ago. Experts say the trend is likely to continue in the coming months, possibly leading to $3-a-gallon gasoline for the first time since 2021.

U.S. automakers had a punishing week — with a silver lining for shoppers

According to AAA, as of Thursday, the price per gallon for regular gasoline ranged from $4.59 in California, where state gas tax is the highest in the nation, to $2.93 in Mississippi, which has one of the lowest tax rates on fuel.

“For every Mississippi, you have a California to balance it out,” says Andrew Gross, a spokesperson for AAA.

"The late-season wild card is always hurricanes"

A year ago, excessive heat forced Texas refineries to curtail operations, and Hurricane Idalia temporarily shut down oil production in the Gulf of Mexico, which contributed to higher prices. Despite record-breaking heat waves across the country this summer, Texas and Louisiana, where the majority of U.S. refineries are located, haven’t been hit as hard.

“The late-season wild card is always hurricanes,” says Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “If a hurricane makes landfall in a refining area, it can really disrupt things.”

Forecasters have warned of a particularly active hurricane season this year, but things have been quieter than expected — so far. Hurricane Beryl did considerable damage in parts of the Caribbean and caused some disruptions to U.S. refinery operations, but things got back to normal pretty quickly .

Even so, energy analyst Stephen Schork, who is principal and co-founder of The Schork Group, cautions that we are entering peak hurricane season, which falls between mid-August and late October . In 2005, the double wallop of Hurricane Katrina at the end of August, followed by Hurricane Rita nearly a month later, “completely disrupted the market and sent prices extremely higher,” he says.

Despite the devastating effects of Katrina and Rita on oil supplies, those storms were seen as outliers. Typically, late-season storms have less impact on fuel prices, according to Tom Kloza, the global head of energy analysis for the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS). That’s because every year, around August, the industry transitions from a summer blend to a winter blend of gasoline. The winter blend, which evaporates at lower temperatures, is less expensive to produce. And that switch occurs just as the summer driving season is waning.

“The further we get into hurricane season without any major storms making landfall, the better for consumers,” De Haan says.

Global events, EVs and an aging U.S. population affect prices

But other factors are also influencing the current downward trend in gas prices.

Iran, which produces 3 million to 4 million barrels a day, continues to aid its Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthi allies arrayed against Israel amid the ongoing Gaza conflict, but so far that hasn’t affected Tehran’s oil production. “If Iran gets more heavily involved, that could be a problem. … But if things stay relatively contained there, it shouldn’t have much impact on gas prices,” the AAA’s Gross says.

Meanwhile, China’s demand for oil remains relatively low due to its flagging economy. OPEC+ is expected to curtail cuts in production starting in October. And the U.S. is pumping record amounts of petroleum .

“We’ve never produced more oil than we’re producing now,” Gross says. That record production comes as U.S. demand has tapered — from 9.8 million barrels of gasoline per day in recent years to barely 9 million per day now, Gross says.

Kloza points to several factors to explain the change: Remote work means fewer commuters. There are an estimated 3.3 million electric vehicles on U.S. roads, more than twice as many as in 2021. More EVs have helped keep demand for gasoline in check, although Kloza notes that the effect is relatively modest, with every million EVs sold reducing demand by about 22,000 barrels a day. And Kloza also notes the gradually aging U.S. population — older Americans, he says, “tend to drive a lot less.”

A Hyundai Ioniq 6 is seen at the Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park in Edison, New Jersey, the home of the world’s second largest light bulb, left, on June 11, 2024.

A road trip in an electric vehicle doesn't have to be nerve-wracking anymore

Barring unforeseen shocks, it all points to the likelihood of lower fuel prices for some time to come. GasBuddy’s De Haan says pump prices could crack the $3-a-gallon level before Thanksgiving and remain low into next year.

Whether gas prices are up or down, don't blame or thank the president

Whether gas prices are up or down, don't blame or thank the president

Of course, this comes as Americans prepare to vote in the general election. U.S. presidents have very little to do with gas prices , but that has rarely stopped them or their opponents from trying to score political points off the issue.

Kloza, from OPIS, expects we will see that again. “Whoever wins this election in November is probably going to take credit for cheap gas prices that you're going to see at the beginning of 2025,” he says.

If you’re planning to take a last-minute summer road trip, filling up at the pump won’t cost as much compared to the beginning of the season. However, some states are pricier to drive through than others.

As of Aug. 23, 2024, the AAA national average cost for regular unleaded gasoline was $3.374, but some states – like Hawaii and California – are over a dollar more expensive. The price of gas ranged from $4.657 for a gallon of regular gas in Hawaii, the highest in the nation, to $2.921 in Mississippi.

California isn’t far behind Hawaii, where the state gas tax is the highest in the nation. “For every Mississippi, you have a California to balance it out,” Andrew Gross, a spokesperson for AAA, told NPR.

Experts say the nicer weather, global events, EVs and an aging U.S. population are influencing the downward trend in gas prices. Last year, a heatwave forced Texas refineries to cut operations, and Hurricane Ida shut down oil production in the Gulf of Mexico, therefore pushing up gas prices. But an active hurricane season this year – which forecasters have warned of – could change everything.

“The late-season wild card is always hurricanes,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said to NRP. “If a hurricane makes landfall in a refining area, it can really disrupt things.” But the further we get into hurricane season (between mid-August and late October) without major storms, the better for consumers, De Haan added.

There’s also been record oil production as U.S. demand has tapered. Tom Kloza, the global head of energy analysis for the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS), said several factors could explain this change, including fewer commuters due to remote work, more electric vehicles on the road and an aging U.S. population that tends to drive less, NPR reported. Kloza noted that every million EVs sold reduces demand by about 22,000 barrels per day.

Labor Day Gas Prices Could Be Lowest In Years—And May Keep Dropping This Fall

Travelers hitting the road over Labor Day weekend are in for lower gas prices than last year—and potentially the lowest prices since 2021—as the cost of gas continues to drop as it typically does at the end of summer.

People fill their vehicle's gas tank as they look at a meter at a gas station in Glenview, Ill., on ... [+] July 10. At least one gas price expert is predicting the national average could drop below $3 this fall.

GasBuddy’s annual Labor Day travel forecast predicts the average price of gas will fall to $3.27 by Monday, which would be the lowest Labor Day price since three years ago, when gas was an average of $3.16 per gallon.

If Monday’s price per gallon is $3.27, it would be a 50 cent-per gallon decrease from last year’s $3.77 per-gallon price.

The dropping prices are at least in part due to lower demand, according to GasBuddy, and AAA’s Andrew Gross said last week “the clouds of war overseas are less dark at the moment and the Atlantic is quiet now too, which is taking pressure off of oil prices,” referring to a relative lull in hurricane activity recently.

Heading into the holiday weekend, prices are highest in Hawaii ($4.66), California ($4.61), Washington ($4.18) and Nevada ($3.97), according to AAA, and prices are lowest in Oklahoma ($2.89), Mississippi ($2.89), Texas ($2.95) and Tennessee ($2.96).

$750 million. That’s how much money GasBuddy expects Americans will save on gas over the Friday-through-Monday travel period compared to last year.

While gas prices are dropping, the national average kilowatt-per-hour cost for Level 2 commercial charging of electric cars—commonly used in homes and public charging stations—has remained steady for about a month, AAA reported on Aug. 22, at which point the national average for a kilowatt of electricity at an L2 commercial charging station was 34 cents. As of AAA’s latest update , the most expensive states for commercial charging are Hawaii (56 cents), West Virginia (45 cents) and South Dakota (43 cents), while the least expensive states are Kansas (21 cents), Missouri (24 cents) and Delaware (25 cents).

Surprising Fact

The lowest price-per-gallon cost of gas over Labor Day weekend in the last decade was $2.20 in 2016, followed by $2.22 in 2020. In 2016, prices quickly dropped after it was clear that Hurricane Hermine would not impact gas production in Gulf Coast refineries, AAA reported . In 2020, gas prices around Labor Day were low because of the COVID-19 pandemic causing many to work from home and not travel , leading to low demand.

What To Watch For

If gas prices continue to drop through the fall. GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan said in a press release that this year is “perhaps the best opportunity in years for the national average to fall below $3 per gallon.” He said as we get closer to Thanksgiving, tens of thousands of stations should fall below $3 because of lower seasonal demand and less expensive winter gasoline.

We'll be back with more updates and analysis soon, but before we go, here's a recap of the key developments that took place today:

  • Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sacked Ukraine's air force commander, days after a pilot died when an F-16 jet crashed
  • Six people have died and at least 55 others hurt following a Russian guided bomb attack on the city of Kharkiv;
  • Two women died and 11 people were injured by an attack which struck a factory in Sumy that manufactures packaging for baby food, juices and household products;
  • The Kremlin announced that Vladimir Putin plans to visit Mongolia - a member of the International Criminal Court which has an issued an arrest warrant for him;
  • The Ukrainian pilot killed when his F-16 fighter jet crashed on Monday was shot down by Ukraine's own anti-aircraft missile system, an MP has claimed;
  • Mr Zelenskyy said today's attack on Kharkiv could have been avoided if Ukraine had permission to strike Russian military targets with Western weapons;
  • The EU rebuffed a request from Kyiv for the bloc to train Ukrainian soldiers inside the war-torn country.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has dismissed the country's air force commander Mykola Oleshchuk.

The sacking was announced on Friday in a presidential decree.

There was no immediate explanation from Mr Zelenskyy for his decision but it comes days after a Ukrainian pilot was killed when his F-16 jet crashed on Monday.

Lieutenant Colonel Oleksiy Mes was killed while defending Ukraine's skies in a Western-donated warplane.

Ukrainian MP Mariana Bezuhla has claimed the jet was shot down by the country's own anti-aircraft missile system.

In response to Ms Bezuhla before his sacking, Lieutenant General Oleshchuk said her comments were a "tool to discredit the top military leadership".

"Mariana, the time will come when you will apologise to the entire army for what you have done, I hope in court!", he added.

Six people are now known to have died following the Russian guided bomb attack on Kharkiv, local authorities have said.

Kharkiv mayor Ihor Terekhov said one child was killed in a playground and three people were killed in a 12-storey apartment block that caught fire as a result of the strike.

The Ukrainian authorities did not give the circumstances in which the two other people died in the strikes, which hit four areas of the city.

As well as those people who died, at least 55 others were injured, officials said.

About 20 of the injured were in severe condition, according to regional governor Oleh Syniehubov.

Top Ukrainian officials have begun a visit to Washington, the Ukrainian presidential office has said.

The delegation includes economy minister Yulia Svyrydenko and defence minister Rustem Umerov.

"We are working in Washington... We are grateful to our partners for their support," the president's chief of staff Andriy Yermak said on Telegram .

The visit comes amid Volodymyr Zelenskyy's renewed a call on Western allies to allow Ukraine to use long-range Western weapons to attack Russian military air bases.

Kyiv says that the most effective way to counter Russian strikes is to target Russian planes, not the bombs themselves.

The US ambassador to Ukraine has called on Russia to be "held accountable for these war crimes" in Kharkiv.

In a statement on X, Bridget A Brink said "Russia struck an apartment building in Kharkiv with a guided aerial bomb, killing several and injuring many, including children".

Kharkiv has been the focus of heavy Russian bombing throughout the war, although there had been a drop in intensity in recent weeks, possibly related to a surprise invasion launched by Ukrainian forces into Russia's Kursk region.

Ukrainian authorities said today's attack involved five aerial guided bombs launched from planes in Russia's Belgorod region, also known as "glide bombs" which are fitted with a navigation system taking them to their targets.

The footage below shows the aftermath of the attack in Kharkiv.

The EU has rebuffed a request from Kyiv for the bloc to train Ukrainian soldiers inside the war-torn country, but will train them as close as possible to Ukrainian territory, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said.

The EU has trained some 60,000 Ukrainian soldiers inside the economic union's borders since Russia's invasion of the country and will aim to train 15,000 more by the end of the year, Mr Borrell said.

Kyiv has asked the EU to consider some training inside Ukraine, arguing this would be faster, more cost-effective, and logistically easier than inside the EU.

But multiple EU countries are reluctant to deploy troops inside Ukraine, expressing concerns about their safety and questioning whether such a move would divert Ukrainian forces from their core mission, in order to protect trainers.

Mr Borrell told reporters: "Some member states were ready, others reluctant.

"Finally, we decided that the training will be as close as possible to Ukraine, but not in Ukrainian territory."

Ukraine has urged Mongolia to arrest Vladimir Putin on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant when he visits next week.

The court issued an arrest warrant in March of last year against Mr Putin, accusing him of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine.

The Kremlin has dismissed the accusation, saying it is politically motivated.

The warrant obliges the court's 124 member states, including Mongolia, to arrest Mr Putin and transfer him to The Hague for trial if he sets foot on their territory.

Now, the Ukrainian foreign ministry has called on the ICC to arrest the Russian leader when he visits Mongolia on 3 September.

"We call on the Mongolian authorities to comply with the mandatory international arrest warrant and transfer Putin to the International Criminal Court in the Hague," the ministry said on Telegram.

Asked earlier today whether Moscow was concerned that Mongolia was a member of the ICC, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: "No, no worries about this. We have a great dialogue with our friends from Mongolia."

Asked whether there had been discussions with Mongolian authorities about the ICC warrant, Mr Peskov added: "Obviously the visit, all of the aspects of the visit have been thoroughly discussed."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he held a meeting with the top military commanders of Ukraine this afternoon.

The president said that three key issues were discussed, starting with the situation on the frontlines.

Kursk invasion

Ukraine's top commander says Kyiv's forces have advanced up to 2km in their invasion of Russia's Kursk region.

Oleksandr Syrskyi briefed Mr Zelenskyy via video link and said Ukrainian forces took control of 5sq km of Russian territory.

Discussions were also had over the next set of reinforcements in the area, which Mr Zelenskyy said was "extremely important for strengthening our positions".

General Syrskyi also briefed the president on the ongoing fighting near Pokrovsk, which Ukraine is trying desperately to hold in the face of advancing Russian troops.

Preparing for new academic year

The meeting also covered how Ukraine will deal with the new academic year for schoolchildren, which starts next week.

Mr Zelenskyy heard reports from Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, internal affairs minister Ihor Klymenko and education and science minister Oksen Lisovyi.

The president said discussions covered security issues, as well as the construction of bomb shelters.

Energy problems

The third key issue addressed was the current state of Ukraine's energy grid following a week of heavy Russian strikes.

Mr Zelenskyy heard analysis of energy issues, including the potential construction of protective structures around key energy infrastructure.

Images are emerging of the aftermath of today's attack on Kharkiv.

Russia denies deliberately targeting civilians, but thousands have been killed and wounded in its strikes during its invasion.

The scenes come as Volodymyr Zelenskyy renews a call on Western allies to allow long-range attacks on Russian military air bases after the attack.

The number of people killed in a Russian strike on Kharkiv has risen to five.

Meanwhile, 40 people have been injured after the Russian missile hit a residential building and playground, according to the regional governor Oleh Syniehubov.

Earlier, we reported that a 14-year-old girl was among the dead.
