dnata acquires UK-based travel company, Gold Medal Travel Group

DUBAI, U.A.E., 11 th February 2014 : dnata announced today it has acquired one of the UK’s leading travel businesses, Gold Medal Travel Group from Thomas Cook Group plc. Gold Medal Travel Group is a market-leading distributor of scheduled long-haul products. In addition to the leading trade brand, Gold Medal, as part of this acquisition dnata also gains control of the award-winning OTA Netflights.com, and the high-end travel brand Pure Luxury.

"dnata’s growth strategy aligns well with Gold Medal Travel Group — its comprehensive travel services complement dnata’s established international travel offering, and will further enhance the proposition we offer our customers be it to trade, corporates or individuals,” said Iain Andrew, Divisional Senior Vice President of dnata’s travel business . “Gold Medal Travel Group is a successful company, with strong products supported by an excellent management team, and a compelling business strategy.

“This is a significant strategic partnership between two global brands, and will accelerate the growth trajectories of both Gold Medal Travel Group and dnata,” said Steve Barrass, Managing Director, Gold Medal Travel Group. “Post this transaction, Gold Medal Travel Group will continue as the exclusive provider of scheduled air travel and car rental products to Thomas Cook UK and we look forward to combining forces with dnata to expand our offerings to our customers.”

Based in Preston, UK, Gold Medal Travel Group handles more than 275,000 travel bookings a year and is one of the biggest tour operators to Dubai.  This coupled with dnata’s experience in the Emirate will strengthen the companies’ inbound travel services and support continued tourism growth in the UAE.

“Netflights.com and Pure Luxury further position dnata as an international leader in travel services, able to offer customers superior travel options,” added Andrew “Having the combined strength of guaranteed distribution through our independent agents, OTAs, wholesalers, and Thomas Cook UK allows us to source the very best product and offers from our close industry partners.”

The acquisition is effective from 11 February 2014, with no interruption to the services offered by Gold Medal Travel Group. The business will continue under the Gold Medal Travel Group branding.

The Gold Medal Travel Group is investing in the expansion of its specialist touring, luxury and cruise brands as part of the B2B supplier’s plans for growth in 2023.

Simon Applebaum, managing director, told a Travel Weekly webcast that Gold Medal will remain as the group’s flagship brand, offering premium tailor-made holidays – but there will be a greater focus on developing its sister brands: Pure Luxury, Incredible Journeys and Cruise Plus.

He joined the company in November 2021, when it had been positioned “for survival” during the difficult times of the pandemic, with the specialist brands seen almost as sub-brands.

Over the past eight months, he has been looking at its assets and strategies for growth, and seeing how the brands “all stand up in their own right”.

He is expanding the specialist teams, while investing in technology, marketing and tools for agents to take advantage of the potential for growth in each sector.

“We’re really putting our money behind these strategies and doing what we’re calling specialism at scale, because Gold Medal has such a breadth of product,” he told the webcast.

“We’re in a fortunate position of being able to have all the upsides of contracting on volume, and technology, but also able to put in teams that focus on nothing but their specific brand.”

He said the adventure and touring brand Incredible Journeys has been “almost dormant” during the pandemic because of low demand and “us not spending any time really focused on it”.

However, looking at prospects for 2023, he anticipates touring and adventure holidays will “surge back” so he is investing in the team by hiring specialist contractors and marketeers to focus on the sector.

“We see it as probably the one that will rebound fastest, and has the most exciting growth potential,” he said.

He said Cruise Plus will be a £20 million-plus business, while Pure Luxury is double that figure.

Pure Luxury has expanded its team, ensuring post-booking changes are managed better, and taking on more ambassadors who have many years of working with high-net-worth individuals.

They are supported by concierges who can book extras such as romantic restaurants and golf tee-off times, and it includes Marhaba, which offers services for transfer passengers in Dubai.

Cruise Plus offers agents the chance to book bonded itineraries that feature ocean and river cruises along with the option for pre- and post-cruise land tours.

Applebaum said cruise sales have seen record week after record week, adding: “This has surpassed all of our expectations.” Furthermore, the river cruise sector is seeing more awareness among consumers and agents, offering the trade yet more opportunities, he said.

Challenges faced

In order to support business growth and help improve decision making, Gold Medal required a daily reporting solution capable of analysing the business by channel, product, country, airline, internet, or agent. Steve Bacon, Finance Director, had a clear vision that recognised the need to dramatically improve the accuracy and timeliness of management information.

Understanding the breakdown of gross margin was fundamental to making the right decisions to improve business performance and profitability. “We generate a tremendous amount of data each day relating to customer orders, but producing meaningful information could take three days. Using a combination of flat file exports, hard copy and manual input of data into Excel spreadsheets was inefficient and error prone. We needed an automated solution that would support daily decision making. The solution had to be reconciled with the management accounts to gain Board approval,” says Bacon.

Strategy followed

Due to customer referrals and a previously successful working relationship, the Gold Medal finance team approached ICit Business Intelligence to design and build a solution that would satisfy their requirements.

The first step was to prove whether IBM Cognos TM1 was the right product for Gold Medal. ICit conducted a  two-day Proof of Concept , building an initial model to analyse 12 months of flight data consisting of over 2 million transactions. ICit consultants, with a blend of accountancy and technical IBM Cognos TM1 implementation experience, ensured a fast and successful POC. ICit was able to demonstrate the power and flexibility of the solution that would potentially give Gold Medal a competitive advantage in the travel industry.

The production system had to meet the following success criteria:

  • Support informed business decisions
  • Reconcile with management accounts  and satisfy audit criteria
  • Allow budgeting, forecasting, reporting and analysis in a single environment
  • Lead to faster, more accurate reporting with High/Low Performance Analysis
  • Consist of an easy to use and customisable interface
  • Have the fastest possible implementation time

Benefits realised

The system developed for Gold Medal provides on-line dynamic reports and analysis across all major products for each key performance metric. In addition, using a shape object showing a world map, users can simply drilldown to review margin performance at “city” level. By presenting the information in a user-friendly intranet Web page with Executive Dashboards, Gold Medal can quickly review daily performance with a few clicks of the mouse. Results that fall outside a set of predetermined values are highlighted using traffic-light colours to focus management on areas of the business that need attention.

Additionally, the fast, adaptable reporting system allows Gold Medal to discover the results of “Test and Learn” marketing promotions immediately, and to base any possible changes with clarity on the outcome. The capability to further break down the sales information between dates when bookings are made and when clients will travel translates into more far more effective marketing.

According to Steve Bacon;

Before introducing the solution based on IBM Cognos TM1, our sales analysis could take three days to complete. This was too slow and hindered our ability to make informed decisions about marketing promotions and product pricing. The new IBM Cognos system gives daily analysis of product sales and margin mix. We can now make tactical decisions and test marketing promotions in real time.

“We have worked in collaboration with ICit to develop a customised solution to deliver management information to key stakeholders. We have reduced  our month end close by two weeks  and we are delighted with the results. We also have plans to extend the use of the IBM Cognos system across the business, including operations,” continues Bacon. “Whilst we achieved our objectives, we underestimated the amount of time it would take to cleanse the source data. Admittedly, we had several data sources and we were adamant that the gross margin would be reconciled with the management accounts. ICit were able to drive the reconciliation process, since the team consisted of qualified accountants and software implementation consultants,” Bacon concludes.

Following on from my review and GMT reply our booking ref was GP74CFK . Reading other reviews it appears GMT go out of their way to not pay genuine refunds hence the reason for our frustrations in getting any assistance and refunds. I can never understand why a company dismisses their customers once paid and then when there is an issue are not prepared to help regardless of losing any good reputation they had. Must be a company policy to act this way !!!

checked into Mondrian hotel south beach… SHOCKING

checked into Mondrian hotel south beach after cruise package through a travel agent who used gold medal,on icon of the seas on the 9th march, checked out on the 10th due to the disgrace of it, gold medal have been refunded from the hotel for the 10th 11th & 12th, we have submitted proof of receipts and check out, the incompetence of this company is terrible. we still haven't been refunded. OVER £!000 PER BOOKING

Charged £20 for an obvious typo correction.

Booked a holiday to Disney World from the UK and made a typo on a name. I got charged £20 to correct which I feel is ludicrous for an obvious typo. Disney said they would change for no fee and I believe Virgin Atlantic the airline concerned would too. The lady at Disney told me they use Gold Medal to deal with this airline. I haven’t a reference beginning G The Disney reference is added privately

TERRIBLE COMPANY - DO NOT USE Purchased trip of a lifetime to New York with Gold Medal via TUI. Arrived at Sheraton hotel Times Square, room still not ready at 10pm at night, bathroom covered in mould and room dirty. Three months later we have a response from Gold Medal. Whilst Gold Medal offer their sincerest apologies they will be "no refund or compensation". Steer clear of this company if offered via TUI or other travel providers. This is the worst company I have in my 82years tried to deal with things when a holiday goes badly wrong They will not accept responsibility even when you have photos to prove the state of the hotel you were put in booked with Hays travel and ended up with these people was suppose to be 5star in Mauritius more like 1star in blackpool it was filthy dilapadated dangerous Radisson Blu Azure dont ever go near it or Gold MEDAL

Harassed and bullied for money by guide, extorted for money by safari agent, terrible hotel, beaches filthy, farm fishing off the beach mean no swimming. £13,000 down the drain. 30th wedding anniversary holiday ruined. Only apology was "sorry you felt like you were kidnapped", "it was a misunderstanding" Compensation refused by them when ABTA applied. Disgusting treatment of clients. Booked through Travel Consultants who used this company and have refused to get involved in any complaints.

Saved the day!

After confirming a holiday, the customer informs me for the ATOL cert, his partner's name is... because they are now married and her passport is now in her married name! Unfortunately, he didn’t tell me this when I confirmed their names prior to confirming the booking… Urgent call with my contact at GM and luckily she was able to amend the flights and update hotel and transfer details- all with no fees🙏🏼 Thank you Kate!

Project overview.

In June 2019 we completed a 35 week Project, governed by a JCT Design & Build Contract 2016, to strip-out and refurbish all 65000ft² of the old British Leyland Daf Headquarters in Preston, for our client Gold Medal, part of the Emirates Group.

The local landmark and commercial property was originally built in 1965-66 and was in a tired state right down to the shell and core.

The client wanted to create their signature office, with a focus on wellness as well as being as eco-friendly as they could.

There were issues with the fabric of the building due to general erosion of the exterior and materials containing asbestos which had been used to construct the building.

We removed the asbestos and treated the erosion of the exterior, replaced the windows and doors and clad the roof and walls to restore the shell and core before giving the building a full Cat A and B fit-out for our client.
