Gold Medal Travel Group invests in ‘specialism at scale’

The Gold Medal Travel Group is investing in the expansion of its specialist touring, luxury and cruise brands as part of the B2B supplier’s plans for growth in 2023.

Simon Applebaum, managing director, told a Travel Weekly webcast that Gold Medal will remain as the group’s flagship brand, offering premium tailor-made holidays – but there will be a greater focus on developing its sister brands: Pure Luxury, Incredible Journeys and Cruise Plus.

He joined the company in November 2021, when it had been positioned “for survival” during the difficult times of the pandemic, with the specialist brands seen almost as sub-brands.

Over the past eight months, he has been looking at its assets and strategies for growth, and seeing how the brands “all stand up in their own right”.

He is expanding the specialist teams, while investing in technology, marketing and tools for agents to take advantage of the potential for growth in each sector.

“We’re really putting our money behind these strategies and doing what we’re calling specialism at scale, because Gold Medal has such a breadth of product,” he told the webcast.

“We’re in a fortunate position of being able to have all the upsides of contracting on volume, and technology, but also able to put in teams that focus on nothing but their specific brand.”

He said the adventure and touring brand Incredible Journeys has been “almost dormant” during the pandemic because of low demand and “us not spending any time really focused on it”.

However, looking at prospects for 2023, he anticipates touring and adventure holidays will “surge back” so he is investing in the team by hiring specialist contractors and marketeers to focus on the sector.

“We see it as probably the one that will rebound fastest, and has the most exciting growth potential,” he said.

He said Cruise Plus will be a £20 million-plus business, while Pure Luxury is double that figure.

Pure Luxury has expanded its team, ensuring post-booking changes are managed better, and taking on more ambassadors who have many years of working with high-net-worth individuals.

They are supported by concierges who can book extras such as romantic restaurants and golf tee-off times, and it includes Marhaba, which offers services for transfer passengers in Dubai.

Cruise Plus offers agents the chance to book bonded itineraries that feature ocean and river cruises along with the option for pre- and post-cruise land tours.

Applebaum said cruise sales have seen record week after record week, adding: “This has surpassed all of our expectations.” Furthermore, the river cruise sector is seeing more awareness among consumers and agents, offering the trade yet more opportunities, he said.

Based in Preston, UK, Gold Medal Travel Group handles more than 275,000 travel bookings a year and is one of the biggest tour operators to Dubai.  This coupled with dnata’s experience in the Emirate will strengthen the companies’ inbound travel services and support continued tourism growth in the UAE.

The acquisition is effective from 11 February 2014, with no interruption to the services offered by Gold Medal Travel Group. The business will continue under the Gold Medal Travel Group branding.

Terrible Travel Agent

Most unhelpful travel company I have ever used. Would not help us change flight time with BA stating not possible. I am a BA executive club member and BA stated there was no problem changing but travel agent had to call. The simply said no after several request. Took multiple thousands when I booked the holiday and then not interested in the customer after they had their money.

They have checked the history of booking and advised, whilst we could amend the ticket, as BA advised, there were no seats available in the system on the flight requested to move your booking. Horrific Experience - £2172 out of pocket - Do NOT use Gold Medal

- Booked with agent on 23/06 booking ref GW769DE, no confirmation recieved, agent chased on 24/06 to be told there was no booking (£4700 paid) - Agent then re-booked booking ref Gp769FP 25/06 no confirmation recieved - still no confirmation recieved from agent at 27/06 AM. At this point I requested a change to my return flight (1 day earlier) and asked if that could be factored in as still no confirmation - so assuming not booked. Recieved confirmation on 27/06 PM - 5 days after booking and paying £4700 - I was told it would cost £1500 to change as I hadn't requested in 72 hours from confirmation, yet I only recieved this after this request...this was later reduced to £500 airline fee + £100 Gold Medal fee - why am I paying a Gold Medal fee for your delay? - As it transpires Gold Medal had changed their systems hence issues - no apology, explanation etc. - On recieving confirmation 27/06 PM there was a basic pdf - no e-tickets etc. So I went direct to airline to check to ensure this was booked - which it was - however, I'd paid £1300 extra for premium economy seats, only to find out only 1/2 flights was premium economy. I challenged this also and was told there was nothing they could do - bearing in mind still no e-ticket recieved at this point. - I asked to cancel, I was told no. - I only booked this holiday with Gold Medal due to the premium economy seats (which arent premium economy for full flights) - I had originally been quoted £3200 by Love Holidays and I wish i'd gone with them/economy seats. Which would have saved me £1300 on seats & £600 on flight change fees.... - I raised complaint via agent who was told they are aware the seat class aren't showing on their itinerary doc but it shouldn't cause mistrust... I had 0 opportunity to see that, or decline it. I had to find out myself on Delta website - post paying £1300 extra!! - On the complaint response they offered to wave £100 Gold Medal fee but not £500 airline fee. - Agent called today to book the revised flight & pay £500 - but was told this is now £436pp. I'm absolutely beyond livid. DO NOT BOOK WITH GOLD MEDAL

My previous review disappeared

My previous review disappeared. Let me try and be more pc. On booking with them and paying in full for my flight home to see my son on his birthday, I was given a reference number (LGFVBA). On phoning to try and get my tickets I couldn’t get an answer. Phoned the airline and net flights to try and resolve this but they had no record of me or the reference. I’m a few thousand in debt now and have involved both police and the fraud unit. If anyone from gold medal would like to refund me, now is the time. Matt 07931630714

TERRIBLE COMPANY - UPDATE - CAN'T EVEN GET BACK TO ME

TERRIBLE COMPANY - DO NOT USE Purchased trip of a lifetime to New York with Gold Medal via TUI. Arrived at Sheraton hotel Times Square, room still not ready at 10pm at night, bathroom covered in mould and room dirty. Three months later we have a response from Gold Medal. Whilst Gold Medal offer their sincerest apologies they will be "no refund or compensation". Steer clear of this company if offered via TUI or other travel providers. checked into Mondrian hotel south beach after cruise package through a travel agent who used gold medal,on icon of the seas on the 9th march, checked out on the 10th due to the disgrace of it, gold medal have been refunded from the hotel for the 10th 11th & 12th, we have submitted proof of receipts and check out, the incompetence of this company is terrible. we still haven't been refunded. OVER £!000 PER BOOKING

Following on from my review and GMT…

Following on from my review and GMT reply our booking ref was GP74CFK . Reading other reviews it appears GMT go out of their way to not pay genuine refunds hence the reason for our frustrations in getting any assistance and refunds. I can never understand why a company dismisses their customers once paid and then when there is an issue are not prepared to help regardless of losing any good reputation they had. Must be a company policy to act this way !!!

Charged £20 for an obvious typo correction.

Booked a holiday to Disney World from the UK and made a typo on a name. I got charged £20 to correct which I feel is ludicrous for an obvious typo. Disney said they would change for no fee and I believe Virgin Atlantic the airline concerned would too. The lady at Disney told me they use Gold Medal to deal with this airline. Saved the day!

After confirming a holiday, the customer informs me for the ATOL cert, his partner's name is... because they are now married and her passport is now in her married name! Unfortunately, he didn’t tell me this when I confirmed their names prior to confirming the booking… Urgent call with my contact at GM and luckily she was able to amend the flights and update hotel and transfer details- all with no fees🙏🏼 Thank you Kate!

Gold Medal Travel PLC

Project overview.

In June 2019 we completed a 35 week Project, governed by a JCT Design & Build Contract 2016, to strip-out and refurbish all 65000ft² of the old British Leyland Daf Headquarters in Preston, for our client Gold Medal, part of the Emirates Group.

The local landmark and commercial property was originally built in 1965-66 and was in a tired state right down to the shell and core.

The client wanted to create their signature office, with a focus on wellness as well as being as eco-friendly as they could.

There were issues with the fabric of the building due to general erosion of the exterior and materials containing asbestos which had been used to construct the building.

We removed the asbestos and treated the erosion of the exterior, replaced the windows and doors and clad the roof and walls to restore the shell and core before giving the building a full Cat A and B fit-out for our client.

Your construction team's communication meant that challenges wre met head on and dealt with swiftly to allow us to meet our critically set budget and timeline targets.

My previous review disappeared. Let me try and be more pc. On booking with them and paying in full for my flight home to see my son on his birthday, I was given a reference number (LGFVBA). On phoning to try and get my tickets I couldn’t get an answer. Phoned the airline and net flights to try and resolve this but they had no record of me or the reference. I’m a few thousand in debt now and have involved both police and the fraud unit. If anyone from gold medal would like to refund me, now is the time. Matt 07931630714

Excellent all round!

From initial enquiry through to the actual holiday and return our whole experience was excellent. The customer service rep that helped us with initial enquiry and booking was excellent and the hotel that was recommended was perfect in every way as well as great flights giving us an all round great experience. TERRIBLE COMPANY - UPDATE - CAN'T EVEN GET BACK TO ME

TERRIBLE COMPANY - DO NOT USE Purchased trip of a lifetime to New York with Gold Medal via TUI. Arrived at Sheraton hotel Times Square, room still not ready at 10pm at night, bathroom covered in mould and room dirty. Three months later we have a response from Gold Medal. Whilst Gold Medal offer their sincerest apologies they will be "no refund or compensation". Steer clear of this company if offered via TUI or other travel providers. Absolute rubbish. *** Booking Reference GP7421R *** Provided booking reference as requested then never came back to me. ABSOLUTE RUBBISH - PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

checked into Mondrian hotel south beach… SHOCKING

checked into Mondrian hotel south beach after cruise package through a travel agent who used gold medal,on icon of the seas on the 9th march, checked out on the 10th due to the disgrace of it, gold medal have been refunded from the hotel for the 10th 11th & 12th, we have submitted proof of receipts and check out, the incompetence of this company is terrible. we still haven't been refunded. OVER £!000 PER BOOKING

Following on from my review and GMT…

Following on from my review and GMT reply our booking ref was GP74CFK . Reading other reviews it appears GMT go out of their way to not pay genuine refunds hence the reason for our frustrations in getting any assistance and refunds. I can never understand why a company dismisses their customers once paid and then when there is an issue are not prepared to help regardless of losing any good reputation they had. Must be a company policy to act this way !!!

Charged £20 for an obvious typo correction.

Booked a holiday to Disney World from the UK and made a typo on a name. I got charged £20 to correct which I feel is ludicrous for an obvious typo. Disney said they would change for no fee and I believe Virgin Atlantic the airline concerned would too. The lady at Disney told me they use Gold Medal to deal with this airline. I haven’t a reference beginning G The Disney reference is added privately

Saved the day!

After confirming a holiday, the customer informs me for the ATOL cert, his partner's name is... because they are now married and her passport is now in her married name! Unfortunately, he didn’t tell me this when I confirmed their names prior to confirming the booking… Urgent call with my contact at GM and luckily she was able to amend the flights and update hotel and transfer details- all with no fees🙏🏼 Thank you Kate!

Harassed and bullied for money by guide, extorted for money by safari agent, terrible hotel, beaches filthy, farm fishing off the beach mean no swimming. £13,000 down the drain. 30th wedding anniversary holiday ruined. Only apology was "sorry you felt like you were kidnapped", "it was a misunderstanding" Compensation refused by them when ABTA applied. Disgusting treatment of clients. Booked through Travel Consultants who used this company and have refused to get involved in any complaints.

With the help of Abigail at Cruise Plus, we managed to book a very special Australia & New Zealand Cruise & Stay for a couples honeymoon.
