Can my child travel alone on an Emirates flight?

Yes. You can book our Unaccompanied Minors service for children aged 5 to 11 who are flying alone.

We also offer a paid Unaccompanied Minors service for children aged 12 to 15.

We’ll be there to help your child enjoy a safe, comfortable, and memorable journey from check-in through to meeting their parent or guardian at their destination.

Children aged between 5 and 11 travelling alone will need to fly on an adult fare. This fare also applies when the child travels with an older child who is under 16, as they are not old enough to be the child’s guardian. Children up to 11 who are travelling in a different cabin class from their parent or guardian on the same flight will also need to fly on an adult fare. However, they will still be considered accompanied and will not have access to our children’s lounge and special services.

Children over 12 already fly on an adult fare and are able to fly alone without our Unaccompanied Minor service. However, for an extra fee, you can make a special request for the service for young passengers aged 12 to 15. The fee is USD 50 per young passenger for every leg of the journey.

Have a look at our Unaccompanied Minors page for more information about our service, or contact your local Emirates office where you can make a booking.

What if my child has a connecting flight or overnight transfer?

Connection times

If your child is transferring to another airline as part of their itinerary, the maximum connection time allowed at the airport is four hours.

If they’re transferring to another flight in Dubai, the maximum connection time is eight hours. This is because we have specialist members of our team to care for your child and we can only allocate them for this time.

Overnight transfers and unaccompanied minors

A child under 16 can’t fly alone if their transfer involves an overnight stay at the connecting airport or they need to travel between airports to get to their connecting flight unless you arrange for an adult guardian to meet and care for them at the transit point.

In both situations, you’ll need to confirm these details with us before we can accept your child on board.

Special assistance for children

If your child needs special assistance or specific care on their journey, they must be accompanied by a fare-paying guardian who is over 16 years old.

Find out more about our special assistance, accessible travel or medical services.

Terms and conditions

For safety and security, as a legal parent or guardian you’ll need to complete and sign a Declaration of Indemnity form before your child can fly with us. You'll find these forms at Emirates Airport Offices.

The unaccompanied minor’s parent or guardian must stay at the airport until the flight has departed. The parent or guardian collecting the unaccompanied minor at the airport must provide proof of identification. We offer our Unaccompanied Minors service only on our flights, and not with our partner airlines. Please contact the airline to find out about their services for children travelling alone.

French minors travelling outside of France

Minors with French citizenship who are travelling outside of France without their parent or legal guardians must carry an official authorisation to exit the country, in addition to their passport. The original authorisation must be presented along with a copy of the identification of the parent or guardian who signed the document.

Spanish minors travelling outside of Spain

Spanish minors under 18 years old travelling outside of the Spanish territory without the company of any of his/her legal representatives (parents or legal guardian /s), must carry in addition to passport, a signed declaration of travel permit outside of the national territory. The form may be obtained from the Spanish Police, Civil Guard, Courts, Notaries, Town halls or Consulates.

In the case of foreign minors in Spain for their Departure from national territory must carry the Passport of their respective State or valid travel document in force.

Regarding foreign minors resident in Spain or residents in another EU state please contact the Authorities regarding the applicable documentation.

For more information and queries please contact the Spanish authorities to ensure valid documentation in place.

Unaccompanied minors travelling to Canada

Air Canada doesn’t accept unaccompanied minors from other airlines. Therefore, if your child is travelling flying alone with us, you can book our Unaccompanied Minors service as far as Toronto. In Toronto, the child must be collected by their parent or guardian.

If your child is travelling to Canada alone, or with an adult with no legal custody over them, we strongly advise you to give them a travel consent letter. It must be signed by their legal guardian or a parent with legal custody. The letter should contain these details:

  • authorisation to travel
  • that their destination is Canada and the length of your child’s stay
  • the address and telephone number of the legal parent or guardian

Italian minors travelling outside Italy without an adult

There are special requirements for Italian children travelling alone outside of Italy. If your child is an Italian national aged up to and including 13, they will need to carry a letter of authorisation (a dichiarazione di affido) from the local police (questura) if:

  • they are travelling alone
  • they are travelling with someone who is not their legal guardian or parent (as identified in their passport)

If you live abroad, you can get this authorisation from an Italian embassy or consulate. The dichiarazione di affido can’t be issued by the airport police. Without this authorisation, your child won’t be allowed to leave Italy. This only applies to Italian citizens; all other nationals can travel without this authorisation.

Minors under 14 years old travelling to and from Vietnam

Children under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Children travelling with someone other than their parent or legal guardian must carry an authorisation letter from their parents.

Vietnamese children:

  • For arrival into Vietnam, an authorisation letter is not required
  • For departures from Vietnam, an authorisation letter is required. The letter must be certified by the local police or HCM Department of Justice

Non‑Vietnamese children:

  • For arrival into Vietnam, an authorisation letter is required. The letter must be certified by their local authorities
  • For departures from Vietnam, the authorisation letter is not required

Children travelling under our Unaccompanied Minors service are exempt, as the Unaccompanied Minors form is considered an authorisation document.

Travelling on other airlines

Each airline has their own restrictions and regulations on the unaccompanied travel of minors. If your itinerary involves travel on another airline, you should check the specific unaccompanied minors rules for that carrier before making your booking. These can include restrictions on the acceptance of unaccompanied minors when connecting to or from other airlines.

Please visit the Unaccompanied Minors page for more information, or contact your local Emirates office.

Are there special services if I’m travelling with young children or infants?

What are the rules and regulations for passengers travelling with young children and infants.

You can carry an infant under two years old on your lap. We'll give you an infant seat belt extension. You’ll need to secure the infant by using the infant seat belt extension during taxi, take-off, landing and whenever the seat belt sign is switched on.

A parent or guardian who purchased a seat for an infant under two years but does not have an approved car seat, must be reminded to hold, and secure the infant on their laps with a seat belt extension during take-off, landing, turbulence and whenever the seat belt sign is switched on.

If you’re flying with a child over two years old, you'll need to buy a child's fare and they'll have their own seat.

If you’re travelling with two infants, one infant must be carried on an adult’s lap using an infant seat belt whenever the seat belt sign is on. The second infant must be seated in an aircraft seat secured in an approved Child Restraint Device (CRD). The second infant will travel at the applicable child fare rather than the infant fare. Alternatively, both infants can be seated in aircraft seats. Similarly, three infants can travel with two adults if each adult carries one infant on their lap using an infant seat belt whenever the seat belt sign is on. The third infant must be seated in an aircraft seat secured in an approved Child Restraint Device (CRD). A child fare will apply to the third infant.

Note: An approved Child Restraint Device (CRD) includes either an aviation approved car seat or safety harness.

Using baby car seats on board

Infants who are assigned their own seats in the aircraft must be secured in a car seat or use a safety harness, known as a child restraint seat (CRS) or child restraint device (CRD), it must have a label to show that it's approved for use in an aircraft by:

  • Any Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA)
  • The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
  • Transport Canada

You must take full responsibility for fitting the device to the aircraft seat in accordance with the manufacturer instructions and aircraft policy:

  • A forward facing car seat, must be installed in a forward-facing direction.
  • If rear facing, it must be installed in a bulk head seat.
  • If a bulk head seat is not available, then it must be installed in a forward facing direction.
  • The seat belt must be easily accessible, though it must not be used to attach the infant into the car seat.
  • The aircraft seat back must be left in an upright position, in addition, the car seat table attachments (if any) shall be removed during take-off and landing.

Our cabin crew can assist by raising the armrests so that you can secure the aircraft seat belt to the car seat. They will also brief you on any safety requirements, and have the right to prohibit the use of car seats that do not meet policy standards.

Unfortunately, we can't accept car seats that need to be secured by a three-point seat belt or shoulder harness.

Safety regulations

If you bring a baby car seat to use on your flight, the check-in staff will check that it carries a label showing that it's approved for use on an aircraft, along with the instructions for use. We'll accept car seats that meet the following safety standards:

  • This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft.
  • This child restraint system conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards.
  • Seats approved to Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) No. 213 , 'Child Restraint Systems' , or CMVSS No. 213.1, 'Infant seating and restraint systems' .
  • Seats that meet European safety standards. These seats must bear orange labels marked ECE R44 04 (or 03) or ECE R129.
  • Seats approved for use in aircraft according to the German regulation 'Qualification Procedure for Child Restraint Systems for Use in Aircraft' (TÜV Doc.TÜV/958-01/2001) .
  • Seats that meet the AS/NZS 1754 Australian/New Zealand standards.

If your car seat doesn't meet these safety standards, you can check it in to the hold with your other baggage.

Restraint Harnesses / Devices for Infants, Children and Adults

We accept the following restraint harnesses/devices for travel:

  • CARES and Special CARES
  • Crellling/Houdini Model 27
  • Meru TravelChair
  • Leckey Firefly GoTo Seat

Please consult the table below for details on which cabin classes can accommodate these devices:

We do not provide these devices. You must contact your nearest Emirates Contact Centre at least 48 hours before travel as these devices can only be used on approved seat locations and in certain cabins.

If you require any additional support or assistance for your travel, you will need to complete the Medical Information form (MEDIF) our team can then assist you.

Limitations:

  • A responsible adult must be seated next to the passenger using the restraint harness/device.
  • The adult is responsible for fitting the restraint harness/device and for ensuring that the occupant is seated and secured correctly in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • The passenger’s seat lap belt must be fastened securely while the restraint harness/device is also in use.
  • We will only accept restraint harnesses/devices at the airport if all conditions have been met and we confirm that it is one of the accepted harnesses/devices from the above list.
  • When other airlines or code share airlines are involved in an itinerary, the regulations of the carrying airline are applicable. Please check with the carrier about their policies regarding restraint harnesses/devices before your flight.
  • If your CARES is over the maximum weight and height recommended for FAA certification, or if you are using CARES to connect to another airline, codeshare partner or US airline at an Emirates US gateway airport (including Athens International Airport and Milan Malpensa Airport), you will need to request an exemption for onward travel to or from the US from the FAA prior to your flight.
  • Being a foreign carrier, FAA certification is not applicable for use on Emirates flights. FAA regulations regarding child harness restraints do not directly apply to Emirates or our passengers. However, these limitations are covered in our GCAA approved internal risk assessment.

Baby bassinets

Whilst our bassinets are designed for babies up to two years old weighing up to 11 kg (24.2 lb), we won’t be able to provide one if your baby doesn’t fit safely (for example, if they have to bend their legs to fit into the bassinet). In First Class, our baby bassinets are 63.5 cm long and 28 cm wide (25 in x 11 in), while they are 74.93 long x 33.03 cm wide x 16.51 cm deep (29.5 in x 13 in x 5 in) in Business Class and Economy Class. Please note that bassinets are limited in number and subject to availability. Remember that you can't request a bassinet if you have booked a normal seat on child's fare rates.

Leg rests, seat extensions, ride-on suitcases, and sleepers.

Please note that children’s ride on suitcases or leg rest devices aren’t certified by the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority, and therefore aren’t permitted on board our flights. This includes – but isn’t limited to – devices by Bedbox, Fly Legs-up and FLY-Tot. You can get in touch with us for more information.

Leg rests and extensions

The use of leg rests, or any form of seat-extension device, is not permitted to be used on board. These items are not certified by the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), and pose a safety risk as loose cabin items. They include but are not limited to the below:

  • Fly Legs-up

You can take these items with you on board only if they are stored in the overhead lockers as regular carry-on baggage allowance, and are not used during the flight.

Ride-on suitcases

Ride-on suitcases are permitted to take on board  if they are only stored in the overhead lockers as regular carry-on baggage allowance, and not used during the flight . They must meet the size and weight requirements of your assigned carry-on luggage, and  must not be used as leg-rests or seat extensions . Ride-on suitcases include:

  • Kiddee Case

The only comfort device/sleeper permitted to be used on board an Emirates flight is the CoziGo (Fly Babee) as it meets the safety and risk standards required of the GCAA. The CoziGo may be attached to one of our baby bassinets for the duration of the flight only in Economy Class, Premium Economy and Business Class. You will need to reserve a baby bassinet prior to your flight. Please note, CoziGo is not provided by Emirates.

The following sleepers, and any similar device, are not permitted to use on board:

  • Cocoonababy
  • Kooshy Kids

What are the ticketing rules for child and infant passengers on Emirates?

Infants 0-1 year.

Tickets for infants travelling on the parent’s lap or in a bassinet are discounted from the full adult fare. When booking online, a request for a bassinet can be made in the Passenger Details section.

Infants less than seven days old will only be allowed on board in the case of travel for emergency medical reasons (in incubators) or if the mother is travelling on compassionate grounds.

Children in car seats

Children may travel on board in car seats as long as a separate seat is purchased for the child. Car seats can be used at any stage of the flight, including take-off and landing. The car seat must be the forward facing type only and one that can be secured to the seat by the use of the lap seatbelt, and not a shoulder harness (2-point seatbelt) as for car vehicles. Airport Services will approve the infant car seat at check-in for use on board.

Children 2-11 years

Tickets for children travelling in a separate seat are also discounted from the full adult fare.

Please Note: the Emirates Unaccompanied Minor service is not available in conjunction with a discounted 'child' ticket—a full adult fare must be purchased.

Please contact your local Emirates office to book an unaccompanied minor.

Children travelling in different class to the parents

Children between 5 and 11 years old who are travelling in a different cabin class from their parent or guardian are also considered unaccompanied minors and need to fly on an adult fare. They will only be considered accompanied if they are travelling in the same cabin class with a passenger over 16 years old. For the comfort of other passengers, we do ask that visits between cabins be kept to a minimum.

IMPORTANT: New information concerning infant bookings

Any person 2 years or older must occupy a seat when travelling on Emirates. Therefore, any infant who reaches the age of 2 after the commencement of the journey must pay the applicable child fare and is required to occupy a seat for that part of the journey.

Where a passenger travels as an infant on the outward journey and as a child on the onward/ return journey, applicable infant fare will apply for the outward journey and child fare for the onward/return flights. This cannot be booked online and should be booked through your local Emirates office .

Where a passenger is an infant but is 2 years or older on travel date at point of origin, the applicable child fare will apply for entire journey

If the above has not been done at the booking or ticketing stage, then check-in staff will arrange this at the airport on departure.

If seats are not available at the ticketing or check-in stage, the adult and child passengers will be booked together on alternate flights, subject to availability.

Should travel plans change while en-route and an infant turns 2 years old after travel has commenced the unused coupon(s) will be reissued at the applicable child fare for the rest of the trip and a seat will also be booked for all remaining flights.

IMPORTANT: Conditions of travel to Canada

Parents travelling to Canada with a child under 18 years old are strongly advised to hold documentation showing that the child is theirs. Parents who are separated or divorced are also advised to keep legal and other relevant documents in order to clarify custody rights.

Children travelling to Canada alone or with adults who have no legal custody over them are strongly advised to hold letter of travel consent signed by legal guardian or parent with legal custody. This letter should contain:

a. Authorisation to travel, and b. Destination in Canada, stating length of stay, and c. Signor’s address and telephone details.

How do I make arrangements for accessible travel or special requests?

Please contact your local Emirates office and we will make every effort to accommodate your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why Trust T + L

Want a simple way to make your next flight more comfortable, especially in economy? Well, using a footrest will not only elevate your feet, it can elevate your entire onboard experience. While they’re usually standard with premium seats, portable options can slip into a carry-on and most often come in a hammock or inflatable pillow style. No matter the design, footrests on planes help to relieve pressure on your lower back and can increase blood circulation, easing leg, knee, and back pain, too.

When searching for the best airplane footrests to shop, we judged how supportive, comfortable, and convenient each portable pick would be during travel. The Beskar Travel Foot Rest ranked best overall because of its super easy, over-the-tray-table set up, and for improvements the company made after customer feedback in terms of comfort and sturdiness.

Looking for something a little more substantial? We’ve got picks that run the gamut including memory foam hanging foot hammocks, tri-level inflatable pillows that can double as beds, and more.

Best Overall

Beskar travel footrest.

The adjustable straps can accommodate a range of heights and the whole footrest folds into itself for easy portability.

This type of footrest only works with tray tables located on the back of the seat in front of you.

The Beskar Travel Footrest is a hammock-style footrest that creates a cradle for your feet in the footwell in front of your seat. This particular model is the third generation and features customer-feedback-inspired upgrades such as a more secure cradle base to prevent your ankles from knocking together while in the footrest and an enhanced memory-foam inner lining and outer flannel lining for extra comfort.

This footrest is ideal for travel because it folds up easily, is lightweight, and doesn’t take up tons of space in your carry-on bag. It’s also easy to set up, break down, and store — just buckle the straps around the base of the tray table in front of you and adjust the length that works best for you (between 10 inches to 32 inches). Unlike some hammock footrests, this can be used with the tray table up or down, and it doesn’t get in the way of anyone else in your row. However, because it hangs down from the tray table, it can’t be used in bulkhead seats where the tray table is stored in your armrest.

The Details: 9.45 x 2.36 x 7.20 inches when folded; 20.5 x 2.36 x 7.2 inches when laid flat | 9.1 ounces

Best Hammock

Angemay super-size foot hammock.

The extra-wide base supports more of your foot and is ideal for travelers with larger feet.

The larger size can feel a bit cramped in some of the smaller economy class seats.

The Angemay Super-size Foot Hammock is larger than the average foot hammock. The wider base translates to more cradle coverage for your feet, and can accommodate larger sizes. This footrest is easy to set up and take down, and requires no assembly. It attaches to the tray table and has two adjustable straps (between 17 to 32 inches) to find the perfect height. Breathable memory foam helps regulate temperature while providing comfort. One downside to the larger size is that it may not work, or be comfortable, in planes with very limited space between rows.

The Details: 11 x 7 inches when in use | 7 ounces

Best Inflatable

Sunany inflatable foot rest pillow.

It’s great for bulkhead seats.

Only the height is adjustable.

The Sunany Inflatable Foot Rest Pillow is made from soft, hand-washable PVC that’s comfortable to the touch. The pillow is divided into two inflatable sections to give three different heights, depending on your needs. The lowest height is best for using the pillow as a footrest under the seat in front of you. When fully inflated, this pillow will be around seat height and can function as a bed for small children, or as a footrest for adults in the bulkhead. It’s also one of the few travel footrests that is available in more than a couple colors. Keep in mind that you’ll likely have to blow this up manually, which can take time, and the width of the pillow is fixed and may not work in all seat spaces.

The Details: 9 x 15 x 17, 9 x 15 x 12, 9 x 15 x 6 inches when fully inflated; 7 x 4 inches when in carry bag | 0.8 pounds

Best Folding Footstool

Econo high portable footrest.

This simple footrest is easy to assemble and can support up to 100 pounds.

It’s a pretty basic product for the price.

Made from 100 percent ABS plastic, this footrest has a three-step, pop-and-go set-up process and functions like a footstool to create a platform to rest your feet on while flying. All you need to do is pull out the two self-locking legs on each side and then adjust the width of the footrest to your liking (between 10 to 15 inches). The Econo High Portable Footrest is one of the most compatible footrests on the list thanks to its dimensions. It also doesn’t require a tray table, and can easily be folded down and slipped into its carry pouch and then your carry-on bag. When not in use this can be used as an impromptu sitting stool or a stepping stool for children. We just wish it looked a bit sexier for the price — it’s pretty much just a plastic platform.

The Details: 10-15 x 5 x 1 inches when folded; 10-15 x 5 x 5 inches when extended | 1 pound, 5 ounces

Best for Kids

Koala kloud adjustable inflatable footrest pillow.

It can be inflated and deflated quickly.

When fully inflated it will block others from entering or exiting your row.

Traveling with kids? The Koala Kloud Adjustable Inflatable Footrest Pillow is a three-tiered inflatable footrest that fills in the space between your seat and the seat in front of you. When fully inflated, it fits tightly in economy seats and can be used as a stable bed for small children. The eco-friendly, 100-percent PVC flocking is soft against skin, and it comes with a dust cover that can be placed on the bottom of the pillow to keep it clean. Large intake valves make inflation (and deflation) quick and easy. When not in use, it can be rolled and stored in the dust cover that doubles as a drawstring carry bag, or folded and slid into your carry-on luggage. However, note that the large size means you’ll get a snug fit between seats, but also means you won’t be able to pass through to the aisle.

The Details: 17 x 12 x 18 inches when fully inflated; 4 x 7 inches when deflated

Best Dual Foot

Everlasting comfort airplane footrest.

Top and bottom adjustable straps give you a more personalized fit.

It’s not as comfortable on planes with extremely limited space between rows.

The Everlasting Comfort Airplane Footrest is a dual-foot hammock that fits over the tray table in front of you, and conveniently rolls up into a travel pouch when not in use. You can get the ultimate custom fit thanks to two sets of adjustable straps, and individual foot wells on the base. The 100-percent memory foam is soft and does double duty providing comfort and support, while the dual wells help to prevent your feet and ankles from knocking into each other, a common complaint when it comes to foot hammocks. Reinforced “ribs” keep the base sturdy, but know that this footrest also comes with a lifetime replacement policy in case anything breaks or wears out. The company states that it’s not suitable for people over six feet tall as well.

The Details: 20 x 9.75 x 1 inches when in use | 8.2 ounces

Best Pillow

Huanuo foot rest.

It comes with two removable, machine-washable covers.

This does not break down into a smaller, more portable footrest.

This memory-foam pillow molds to your feet for a more custom and comfortable fit. Arches are supported by the main pillow’s ergonomic dome shape, and the height of the footrest can be adjusted by adding or removing a flat, 1.75-inch booster pillow. (Hot tip: If you’re not using the booster, you can sit on it or use it as a back rest!) We love that it comes with two removable covers, one covered with massaging microbeads and another with a breathable mesh. Both are machine washable — key for anything you’re putting your feet on and anything that touches an airplane floor. Unfortunately, this is the bulkiest footrest on the list since it doesn’t break down, and it will take up a lot of space.

The Details: 17 x 11.3 x 6 inches with booster | 1.65 pounds

Best Adjustable

Basicconcepts airplane foot hammock.

The strap is extra long and can be adjusted from 17 to 34 inches long.

The hammock keeps your feet snuggly together, which may not be comfortable for long periods.

The BasicConcepts foot hammock is a great adjustable option that you can tailor to your perfect height. Simply clip the strap around your tray table and change the length of the strap depending on what's most comfortable for you. You can also position the hammock itself around your feet (to use as a foot rest) or closer to the back of your calves if you want a little more leg support. While the hammock width may pull your feet together, it's still a great choice to improve circulation and relieve leg pain, especially on long-haul flights. The foot hammock also comes with its own stuff sack, so you can quickly store it back up at the end of your flight and pop it in (or clip it to the outside) of your bag.

Tips for Buying Airplane Footrests

Prioritize portability.

While airplane footrests may make your flight more enjoyable and comfortable, it’s equally important to prioritize portability (to save your future self from having to lug around bulky items or sacrifice precious carry-on space ). Keep in mind how well a product sets up, breaks down, and will be carried from point A to your final destination.

Consider any multiple function

Most portable airplane footrests can be used at home under your desk or in the car (as a passenger). Inflatable footrests can sometimes be used as toddler beds on planes, or, in a pinch, as makeshift seats. Some pillow footrests can function as knee support when you’re stretched out on the couch, as a booster seat, or as a back support pillow, too.

There are three main types of portable airplane footrests available: inflatable, hammock, and pillow. Inflatable footrests can be placed in front of a seat to create a balloon of support, much like a blow-up pillow or mattress. Hammocks usually hang down from the tray table and cradle your feet. Pillow footrests are a foam pillow that is placed in the footwell of your seat.

It depends on the airline and the type of footrest. Check with your carrier about rules for your specific flight, and for dimensions of your seat, the area under the seat in front of you, and/or any weight restrictions on the tray table, depending on the type of footrest you want to bring.

Best Airplane Footrest Comparison Chart

Should i consider an airplane footrest.

A footrest can be a useful tool for travelers with frequent foot and leg pain or those that are on the shorter side. They help personalize travel to the needs of your body and make the flight more comfortable.

Many readers especially recommend this option if you’re under 5’3” because it gives you a little height. One reader shares, “I’m really short and having a footrest helps my legs feel more comfortable on long flights.”

They are equally as important if you’re flying with an injured foot or leg. Not only do they help with foot and leg pain, but one reader shares that they also help relieve back pain. “It helps offset pressure on my back during the flight.”

Alternative Footrest Solutions

Maybe you don’t have room in your carry-on or simply don’t want to take up space with an additional travel accessory. In that case, there are a few things you can use to help prop up your feet that you probably already have.

Use Your Under Seat Bag

One way to elevate your feet is to use your under-seat bag as a footrest. Since you’re bringing it along anyway, it can serve a secondary purpose.

A reader shares this tidbit, saying, “I always use my under-seat bag (usually a full backpack) as a footrest. This allows me to scoot it around to extend each or both of my legs as needed, and I can scoot it out of the way.”

Use a Detachable Strap as a Sling

If you favor the sling method of resting your feet, then there is a DIY way you to achieve a similar experience. How you ask?

One TFG reader shares this tip! “I use the detachable shoulder strap from my bag as a foot sling.” This means you don’t have to bring along anything extra but can still obtain comfort.

Use Your Travel Pillow

If you’re already packing a travel pillow for your flight, it can also double as a footrest (pending you’re not already using it for under your head). Which could be the perfect solution to avoid packing extra.

A reader recounts her DIY foot rest pillow trick. “Try a blow-up neck pillow , place it on the floor, and put your feet on it. It will add about 4-inches of floor height.”

It’s not only inflatable pillows that can do the trick. Another reader offers another option, adding, “I have a wedge travel pillow that can double as a footrest. I love it!”

Other Helpful Tips

Keeping your feet elevated is a good start, but there are other tips and tricks that readers recommended to keep your feet and back comfortable during air travel.

Use Compression Socks

Compression socks are designed to add pressure to your legs to maintain blood flow, along with reducing swelling or discomfort.

They are widely celebrated by TFG readers and make most travel accessory top lists. If you anticipate sitting through a long flight, then you might want to check a pair of these out.

Want the right pair? Check out the best compression socks for air travel.

If you’re on a particularly long-haul flight, one way to keep your feet and legs comfortable is to get up and walk around every so often. Getting up on your feet can help get the blood flowing and stretch them out.

You might also want to consider doing some exercises to help stretch your feet and legs. Movement can help keep your legs pain free (or at least less) on lengthy air journeys.

Helping kids sleep on planes; are sleep devices allowed by airlines.

a selection of airplane sleep devices

Are sleep devices and kids’ leg pillows for the plane really going to make long-haul flights easier?

Firstly – what on earth is an airplane sleeping device?   They never had anything like this back in my day…..

I’m sure any parent who has flown long-haul with a small child knows; comfort in the air is paramount to not only have a safe flight with your sanity intact but a good prelude to what to expect during stopovers, the ongoing effect of jet lag and well – basically how quick life can return to “normal” after a long flight.

What price do you put on flying in comfort though?  Flying the whole family Business Class , or even Premium Economy – is probably out of reach for most.  And even on a full-service airline, no matter how far your seat reclines of how good the entertainment is – it’s not a comfortable, or pleasant experience for anyone. Is there a compromise to get through long-haul flying with kids?

In this post we’ll look at:

  • Different seating methods to get your kids comfortable on a long flight
  • Explain how an aeroplane sleep device actually works
  • Which airlines actually allow a sleep device or convertible bed to be used
  • Different brands of sleep devices / airplane leg pillows
  • Other tips for helping toddlers and young children sleep on planes

This post is part of our flying with kids series – we cover everything from airline reviews to travel toys and top tips to keep your sanity in the air.

This post was first published in October 2018, updated October 2019 with latest products and airline information.

How do you get children comfortable to sleep on a long flight?

When we are talking about children, we are referring to kids who have outgrown the baby bassinet on the aircraft – so beyond around 10-12 months depending on your child’s size.

(Not sure if they’ll still fit a bassinet?  Check out our Ultimate Guide to Baby Bassinets – it includes a guide to bassinet size guidelines by airline).

So from larger lap infants, through to 2 years old and beyond, what makes for the easiest way to organise your kids on a plane in order to get them to sleep? We’ll talk you through:

  • Car Seats on airplanes
  • Spare seats on airplanes
  • Extending the seat with a sleeping device

Kids sleeping on planes – Car Seats

Now I will state upfront, I am not an advocate of car seats on long-hauls.  There are two distinct camps on this but as frequent ultra-long-haul flyers – the car seat method is NOT our preferred choice.

For one, a child simply shouldn’t be left in that position for such long periods of time. For me though, it’s a matter of hands. Travelling with 3 small children, frequently on my own, it’s simply not practical getting through the airport to plane with them.

If, however, you know your infant sleeps well in their car seat, you may want to try this method.  For under 2’s you will need to book them a child’s ticket if you want to bring a car seat on board .

And always, always check the airline’s regulations on car seats and ensure the brand you are using is compliant with the airline’s rule ( FAA guidelines are pretty standard worldwide – but they are NOT the authority over every airline in the world!)

Kids sleeping on planes – Hope for a spare seat

For many years, this was the best solution we could hope for – a seat left free between your group so that legs can be spread out sideways.

Being Gold Guest members on Etihad for some years now, we are fortunate that they will automatically allocate us a free seat if one is available. On any other airline though it’s a free for all!

My best advice – just ASK! Prior to the flight ring the airline’s service centre and enquire how full the plane is before pre-booking seats (if that’s an option with your ticket – you may not get a choice on the lowest sale fares).  Otherwise, get to your flight as early as possible on the day of flying to enquire with check-in staff.

The further to the back you of the aircraft you sit, usually the better your chances; nobody wants a middle seat in row 73!  If there are three of you, book the centre row of 4 and leave Seat E or F free.  On a side row of 3, try leaving seat B free.  The combinations get trickier as your family size grows but you get the drift!!

More about the Our Globetrotters Blog

Worst case if the spare seat does get taken, I’m sure they’ll be looking for a switch out with the flight crew if it’s at all possible.  If still no luck, one of your groups switches with them – nothing lost.

Note that if you also have an infant and you’ve booked a bassinet row, the armrests do NOT move in this row.  If you have older children there’s no hope for them to stretch out here, you may want to try and separate your group in this instance – one adult with the baby in the bassinet row and the other further back with any older children trying to play the spare seat trick!

The only airline we are aware of where you can actually purchase the spare seat between you in a row of three and make a bed is Air New Zealand – read more here about their revolutionary Skycouch.

Extend the child’s seat with a sleep device to make an aeroplane toddler bed

So here’s the new innovation! After years of makeshift plane cubbies, leg hammocks and using our own bags – all no doubt completely against airline regulations – there are now actual sleep aid products to extend the length of your economy class seat, allowing little legs to stretch out, smaller children can even lie completely flat!

They come in quite a few varieties.  There are several inflatable cushion brands now which we’ll describe in more detail below (blown up by mouth or foot pump), as well as the Bed Box , which is a hard case designed to extend the length of the aeroplane seat, and an inflatable bed – Flyaway Kids Bed.

But are these actually allowed?

Jet Kids Bed Box tested by frequent flyer family The Globetrotters

Safety rules: Wear your seatbelt!

Using both the spare seat strategy and using a sleep device, note that wearing of a seat belt at all times is still required .  You may loosen it a bit to get comfortable, but it should always be strapped around the child’s waist at all times when seated and visible to the flight crew.

Don’t let children sleep on the floor of the plane

Even if you may have gotten away with it in the past or friends have recommended it, please note that infants or children sleeping on the floor of the plane is a big no-no – refer fact above that they must be wearing a seat belt. Even hidden under your legs, sorry folks, rules are rules.

Read the manufacturers instruction

If installed correctly, these devices should not cause an obstruction in the cabin. But we know from experience it isn’t always straightforward. Even practising using these devices at home, when you’re in the air and pressure is on, the seats are incredibly tight it can be difficult to instal the products exactly as they should be for optimal fit.

Note, you should only use devices mid-flight, not during take-off and landing.

Why the controversy over kids plane sleep devices.

Whilst it sounds somewhat revolutionary to the newcomer that you can actually make a mini-bed in economy class, others immediately baulk that they think this is a safety issue – either because the object is affixed to the seat or it is blocking exits from the plane.

Some airlines have come out and specifically banned them on safety grounds.  Others have taken a more measured approach and specified the exact seats that they can be used in so not to cause an obstruction to other passengers.   Many other airlines have simply said nothing.  At the end of the day, it can be up to the final decision of the flight crew on your particular flight.

This guidance by Singapore Airlines is the most helpful we can find that accurately explains the best use of a sleep product where it does not cause an obstruction to other passengers.

Picture from Singapore airlines on the dafe yes of convertible beds on an aircraft

If your aircraft has 4 seats in the centre it would be allowed in the two centre seats.

Which airlines will allow kids sleep products / Convertible beds?

So here’s what you are waiting for, who exactly lets you take these products.  This list is correct to the best of our knowledge (last updated October 2019) but please let us know if you are aware of any changes or updates that we have not picked up.

“Not explicit” means we cannot find anything directly from the airline’s website that any of the products we will mention are allowed.  The manufacturers themselves list many more “approved” airlines than we have been able to find, based on publicly available information.

Which plane sleep products for kids are best?

We have now flown with several brands of leg cushion and can give you a comparison based on our experience and those we have gathered from our readers.

Kids Leg Pillows for Planes

We have excluded from this list any leg hammock style products that attach to the back of the share in front. The airlines that were explicit in allowing sleep aide products all specifically disallowed these items so we cannot recommend you purchase them.

Important things to consider before buying a leg pillow / flying mattress

  • How easy is the item to transport? Can you easily slip it in your existing carry-on (size and weight) or use it as an alternate kids carry on item?
  • How quick and easy are they to inflate (and will they stay inflated) – or is a hard box with mattress better?
  • If it needs a pump, is this battery operated (possibly noisy); needs a foot pump (possibly blocking the aisle), or can you get there with good old puff power?
  • Will your airline allow the item to be used? Whilst the manufacturer’s websites for these products might claim they are safe for use, some individual airlines have now banned their use.
  • Note for most children, once they reach over approximately 120cm, they are unlikely to be able to sleep with their legs fully stretched out anyway.  They may still find some comfort in being able to sleep in a semi-reclined position.   If doing this, make sure their head is also supported, either with an airline provided cushion, or take a look at these specific kids travel pillow brands that are ideal for little heads.

Other tips to help toddlers & kids sleep on planes.

Besides the child’s actual comfort and sleeping position, there are a few tried and tested things that most parents will try to aid their children in falling asleep:

  • Fly overnight. If they are naturally tired anyway they are more likely to sleep. Overnight flights they tend to dim the cabin and close the blinds too to prolong the period of darkness.
  • Think carefully about snack times and what sort of foods they eat before flying.  Giving them anything sugary pre-boarding will likely to give them an energy burst and the excitement of a TV screen and everything else going on around the plane, sleep might be the last thing on their mind.
  • Keep the routine . If they normally have milk and get in their PJ’s before feeling sleepy, try to keep up this routine to give all the right sleep cues. Ditto, any favourite sleeping teddies.
  • Create a cave! It’s normally the light and noise that create the biggest distraction getting kids to sleep on a plane, so minimise this by placing a blanket over the child’s seat (normally available from the airline on premium long-haul flights)
  • Dare we even say it…. medicines? If you’d like to learn more on the what’s, why’s how’s of administering a medicine that can aid children in feeling drowsy, pop over to this article where we present the information in much more detail to help you decide if it’s a method worth trying.

Kids leg pillows on planes – are they really worth the investment.

My best assessment – having flown 400,000 odd miles with my kids – the jury is still out.

Undoubtedly they make it easier for a small child to get cosy.  But the effort required in carrying the products, inflating or attaching them, especially as a mum frequently travelling solo with three kids; I am not completely convinced that they are worth the investment.

They have undoubtedly helped instead of playing Toddler Tetris at 36,000 feet;  However, with uncertainty over their ongoing acceptance by major airlines; and then requiring you to actually score the right seat on the plane where it’s allowed to be installed; and having an attentive flight crew who understand the rules and will let you inflate said product without complaining your blocking the aisle….

There are still just too many variables for my liking to suggest it’s absolutely the right thing to do.

Our Globetrotters complete guide to Flying with Kids

It’s all relative to the flights you’re taking, aircraft, kids age, length of the flight.  If you were, for example weighing up between getting a budget long-haul flight with no entertainment but adding on the cost of a sleep device to make it bearable, you could absolutely do the maths and justify the purchase.

However, with three kids, already paying for premium airlines and following the other methods mentioned above to get the kids sleepy – I would no longer justify the cost of buying an extra sleep aid. I’d put my money now on a comfier sleep pillow for their necks  that easily attaches to their bags.

BUTTTTTTT….. one last closing thought.  We’ve talked all about using these products on a plane, don’t forget they could also be used on a train, a long car ride, any mode of transport really where the journey could be made more comfortable by having legs elevated.

Over to you now!

Have they revolutionised long-haul travel for you? Are you still on the fence and need some extra advice? We’d love to hear your thoughts and help you decide if an aeroplane sleep product is the right thing for your circumstances.

Hi guys, Royal Brunei allows it with no seat restrictions where it can be used

' src=

great, thank you for the update. We’ve not done a round-up with manufacturers for a while so there may be a few changes we make to our list for 2022

Hello, You can add to your list that TAP Air Portugal does not allow toddler sleep beds

thanks for the update, we’ll get this changed next time we’re reviewing the article.

This article helped us make our decision! Thanks so much! We went with the Flyaway Kids Bed and are so happy we did! Our 2 daughters slept 8 hours straight and we’re delighted with the quality and how fast it is to install and pack away. We actually kept them inflated for the whole flight (except for take-off and landing) and they could comfortably play with their toys and relax during the flight. The main reason we chose Flyaway is because it’s a flat-bed so our daughters could lay on a flat, clean surface and it stops toys falling on the floor during the flight. Also it can be wiped clean, unlike the JetKids mattress which is fabric. The Flyaway Kids Bed material is really thick and high quality so it should last a few years – as we’re expats, we needed something that’s more durable. We didn’t chose Jetkids as we didn’t want to lug around extra suitcases if our girls didn’t feel like riding them. Also the mattresses on the Bedbox look flimsy and poorly made – the sides are held on by velcro! We never fly without them now & recommend Flyaway Kids Bed to all our expat friends!

Very useful article. Unfortunately after reading this article I contacted air canada and they do not allow inflatable devices in airplane. Thank you

Thanks for the update, a shame to hear. Hopefully you will find a good alternative that works for you.

Unfortunately Lufthansa officially doesn’t allow inflatable cushions oder bedboxes anymore: „ So-called ‘comfort devices’, which are attached to the passenger seat or placed in the footwell (e.g. inflatable cubes, seat extenders, etc.) may not be used on board Lufthansa flights for safety reasons.“ You may check: https://www.lufthansa.com/de/en/safety-for-small-children-on-board

Thanks for the update, this is a shame to hear.

Austrian & Swiss don’t allow them either

' src=

I just contacted Air New Zealand and they don’t allow them, but will be reviewing this poicy at some unspecified point in the future. The planepal.co.nz website has a list of 41 airlines that allow use of their inflatable pillow, I imagine that this will apply for similar sleep accessories.

Great article. For what it is worth, we flew with 16m and almost 4 last year, we took the punt and bought 1 plane pal and was lucky enough to borrow one from a friend. We took 1 pump. They were a bit bulky as carry on, we did travel light however, BUT they were very well worth it. we set the 2 up in the centre 2 seats in the row of 4 and the kids slept extremely well. we adults could even put our feet up to the side. so aside from the extra carry on, definitely were a hit for us on a long haul. they remained in the (hire) car for the remainder of the trip and were used again on the return. We flew Air China. If I was travelling alone with the kids different story it might be tricky. Definitely do a run through at home before doing it on the plane. Also we purchased 2 mini pop up tents from Kmart and the kids slept in those every night for 2 months with no complaint. The zip close kept 16m contained! Compared to the Bebe care portacot (which was fantastic) we took when 4yr was a baby was a great alternative. Love what you do, wish we could (always) find a way to join the Club! Thank you

Thanks so much for the feedback and great to hear it worked out for you using them in the centre seats, I really do think they can make a world of difference but it’s so dependent on many factors from kids size to airline, onward travel and how much carry on you can manage. With 2 adults 2 kids I’d definitely do it!

Mega article there!!! Love that there is a list of airlines that accept and prohibit. Super helpful x

Thank you! A lot of research hours there and the airlines are constantly changing their stance. It’s a really interesting area of family travel that is evolving but so helpful for parents to know – anything to make those long-hauls a little easier!

Best Inflatable Foot Rest for Travel that Actually Work

John Parker

There have been many products that have come onto the market designed to make flying, particularly in economy class, more comfortable. One of the newest of these is the inflatable leg rest for flights.

Between my wife and I, we have tried a few of these over the last few years. This includes inflatable, and the newer foot sling types and have certainly found them to make flying more comfortable. They also have the added health bonus of reducing the risk of contracting DVT.

What are inflatable foot rests?

Inflatable footrests provide something to put your feet or legs on while sitting in an economy class seat rather than having them just sitting on the floor. Inflatable footrests come in a number of different designs but all are inflated once on board. They can then be deflated and stored in your hand luggage when no longer required (or prior to landing).

Some are a single fixed height, others are height adjustable and some come in two separate parts.

Top 3 inflatable foot rests for flights and alternatives

Flypal inflatable foot rest.

FLYPAL Inflatable Foot Rest for Air Travel, U.S Patented 2 in 1 Design, Blow-Up Pillow Cushion for Home, Office and Kids to Sleep on Long Flights, 17“x11"x17", Grey.

Although there are many different ones available, I think that the FlyPal version offers the most flexibility. It comes in two separate parts so you can opt to just use the small part as a low foot rest, use the larger part to raise your legs higher or use both together to be at the same height as your airplane seat – so a choice of three different heights.

They are also good if you are traveling with a companion. You can then share it and use one part each so you don’t need to take two with you. Particularly useful for my wife and I (one tall and one short) as I use the small one and she uses the larger one.

It certainly won’t turn your economy class seat into a first class seat but it will certainly help. It deflates very quickly so you can remove it and put it away when you are starting to descend.

Alternatives – the Sleepy Ride Foot Rest

Sleepy Ride - Airplane Footrest Made with Premium Memory Foam - Airplane Travel Accessories - Helps to Prevent Swelling and Soreness - Provides Comfort for Shorter Legs (Jet Black)

A foot hammock is a different concept from the inflatable leg rest for flights. It clips onto the bracket of your food tray on the back of the airplane seat in front. You can then put your feet on it, or put your legs further through it, enabling you to sit comfortably.

The height is adjustable to adapt to your particular leg length. They are particularly useful for tall people like me, with long legs, who cannot easily use a large inflatable device like the one above, as your feet/legs can still go under the seat in front so you are not cramped up.

It is also very light, weighing just 0.25lbs, so doesn’t use up too much of your cabin bag allowance. You would not be able to use this if you were in a seat immediately behind a bulkhead as you would have no seat food tray in front of you to attach it to.

STYDDI Small Inflatable Foot Rest

Inflatable Travel Foot Rest Pillow, Head Pad, Soft Flocking Pillow, Flights Relax Cushion Ottomans Leg Up with Air Pump for Office, Home Relax, Camping and Travel Use (Gray)

This is similar to the full size inflatable footrest but small enough to sit under the seat in front. This allows people of all heights and leg length to use it comfortably.

Personally, it is the device I use the most and have done for a number of years.

It is cheap, it packs up really small and is quick and easy to inflate and deflate.

It can certainly make your long flight more bearable.

You can also use it as a pillow for your head if you want to try and get some sleep, which is a bonus. But don’t lend it to someone with smelly feet before you do!

Are inflatable foot rests a good thing?

Best inflatable footrests for flights

There is little that is worse than having to sit for hours on end in an uncomfortable aircraft seat. So anything that can make you more comfortable on a long flight has got to be a good thing.

Aircraft seats, well economy seats anyway, are not adjustable in any way other than being able to recline them a bit. You can’t raise or lower them to suit whether you are tall or short and neither can you move them backward and forward to allow for long or short legs. They are built for “the average person” whatever they may be.

Some aircraft do have a foot rest built into the seat in front, although I seem to see them less and less lately – no doubt some kind of cost-saving exercise. When they are available they can help to make the seat fit you better, particularly if you are shorter or have short legs, and so help to make you more comfortable. Mind you, they are rather hard so can be uncomfortable when used for hours.

But as well as the increase in your comfort, using airplane footrests can also have health benefits by relieving some of the pressure on your legs.

Where built-in foot rests aren’t available, or they are too hard, the alternative is to use an inflatable travel footrest or some other form of leg rest such as a leg hammock.

These are some of the advantages and disadvantages to help you decide whether to buy one.

Advantages of an inflatable footrest

Advantages of inflatable footrests - dvt

An inflatable footrest can help reduce the risk of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis). They do this by raising your legs and relieving the pressure that they experience during a long flight.

Research: Deep vein thrombosis and air travel

Of course, on long flights you should also consider wearing flight compression socks to reduce the risk of DVT, particularly if you may be prone to it by having a recent procedure, broken bone etc. These are the most popular on Amazon .

Obviously, as already stated, they can help make you more comfortable, which is an advantage in anyone’s book.

If you should be traveling with a young child then they can effectively create a small toddler travel bed when combined with the seat so they can sleep properly. If your child sleeps then not only you will appreciate that but also your fellow passengers around you too.

Disadvantages of an inflatable footrest

The first has got to be that you obviously need to carry it in your cabin baggage. Although they do deflate and fold up fairly small, it is all extra bulk and weight.

If you are tall, like me, with particularly long legs, you certainly won’t be able to use one of the types that inflate to the height of the seat as your knees will be bent double.

If you are in an aisle or middle seat and the person in the window seat wants to get out to go to the toilet or whatever then it is a pain trying to move it out of the way. So the best seat on a plane to use one is a window seat.

It’s amazing that a tiny little buckle can make such a big difference in comfort— Eagle Creek’s Exhale Neck Pillow takes the standard U-shape neck pillow and adds a small clip in the front that draws the two front ends together, thus eliminating that awkward empty spot that allows your head to fall forward and wake you up. It’s pretty genius.

Airplane Foot Hammocks—Making Air Travel More Comfortable

When you buy something using links in our stories, we may earn a small commission. read more  about our policy..

Looking to make your next flight more comfortable? Airplane foot hammocks can elevate your feet to help alleviate swelling. Or, pop in an inflatable footrest. These are the latest must-have carry on accoutrements for making airplanes a little more pleasant.

Health effects of flying

Long-haul travel is tough. Some people fare better than others, but no one is fully spared the effects of being 30,000 feet up in the clouds for hours on end. The change in air pressure has real consequences on the human body, namely gastrointestinal issues (which we won’t get into here, but you know what I’m talking about) and poor blood flow and circulation due to a prolonged lack of movement.

Aside from serious gastrointestinal issues, of course, there’s nothing worse than getting off an airplane and looking down at your feet and not recognizing them. Swollen feet and cankles are typical results of long-haul flights. Or, if you’re like me, short-haul flights, too.

There are a few things you can do help prevent swelling in your lower extremities. One is wearing compression socks during the flight, which helps stimulate blood flow by gently squeezing your legs.

What about the other stresses caused by sitting upright in a confined space for hours? Like the pressure on your low back and legs that end with stiffness, soreness, and—yup—that lovely swelling? Tight socks aren’t helping with that.

Thankfully, there are some other options. And you guessed it… one’s a hammock (ish).

Airplane foot hammocks—to the rescue

These days, hammocks come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, so it’s really no surprise that there are teeny tiny airplane foot hammocks, too. They act like a foot sling to elevate your lower legs and feet.

Designed to hang from the tray table, the best airplane seat hammocks have adjustable straps and are made with thick memory foam padding and a suede pillow top for added comfort.

Think of it like an airplane footrest to help you sit more ergonomically and ease the discomfort of too-upright airplane seats. Airplane hammocks help improve blood circulation and eliminate pressure in your lower legs, ankles, and feet.

While most are adjustable and work for people of all heights, they’re especially great for shorter people and kids who cannot normally reach the floor.

When not in use, they roll or fold up and are easy to put in your carry on. Some even come with a drawstring bag. When you aren’t traveling, they also double as a perfect desk hammock for the office.

Inflatable footrests/pillows

Another type of airplane footrest is an inflatable pillow, which looks like a small ottoman once it’s blown up. It fits right between the seat and the seat back in front of you, essentially turning a coach seat into a lie-flat business class seat—at least for kids.

The best inflatable footrests come with multiple pillows or separate chambers so you can adjust the height. Depending on how much space you have or how high you want your legs, blow up one, two, or three chambers or pillows. Or better yet, let the airplane’s air conditioner vent do the inflating for you. Hold the pillow up to the stream of air and voila. If the thought of that mortifies you, it only takes 1-2 minutes to manually blow it up.

Since this is a free-standing device and doesn’t require straps or anything to hang from, it’s also great for trains, busses, at work, home, a hotel—wherever you need to put up your feet.

If you’re traveling with kids, it’s an absolute no-brainer. Even if they don’t lie down to sleep, it creates a nice surface to play games or keep them entertained (and hopefully off the floor).

Airplane footrest hammock or inflatable pillow?

Below are our top picks for both types of airplane footrests—the hammock sling on straps and the inflatable pillow ottoman.

Which is right for you? Here’s a quick glance at the pros and cons of these two popular styles.

Airplane foot hammocks

  • Folds down (smaller than the inflatable pillow) for easy carrying/traveling
  • lighter weight than the footrest pillows
  • Adjustable straps allow you to get it just right depending on your height
  • Hangs off the tray table so the weight may affect the passenger in front of you
  • Sling may move around or slide up your leg, especially if you shift positions a lot

Inflatable footrest pillow

  • Kids can lay flat and zzZZzzZzzzZzzzz
  • More stable than the hammock and can be moved around on the floor to wherever you prefer it
  • More flexible for use outside of an aircraft and can be used anywhere you need an ottoman
  • Several of the below options come with an eye mask and earplugs
  • Heavier than the airplane hammocks and more bulky to stuff into your carry on
  • Some models may be too large to fit in between the seats, especially if they’re blown up to capacity
  • You’re that person blowing up an ottoman on the airplane…

Our picks for the best airplane foot hammocks

Sleepy ride airplane footrest.

This is one of the most popular airplane foot hammocks on the market. Most ideal for shorter people since it has a short strap. Designed to hold your ankles/low calves—as opposed to planting your feet in the sling—which means it’s smaller and lighter weight.

A rising star, this is the most popular new product on the market. Also made with thick memory foam and has a much larger surface area to hold your feet. Because it’s larger, it’s significantly heavier (but we’re talking a matter of ounces.)

Emirates implements strict regulations on dangerous goods , such as firearms, knives, explosives, and fireworks. These items are prohibited from being carried on board in hand luggage for safety reasons.

For passengers with infants, they may bring one carry-cot or a fully collapsible stroller into the cabin, provided there is room. Passengers are also allowed to carry perfumes in reasonable quantities and make duty-free purchases, including liquor.

Smart bags with lithium batteries are subject to restrictions. They are allowed in the cabin as long as the battery is removable and the bag is powered off.

Please note that different regulations apply for checked luggage and you should check the Emirates website for more information before your flight.

Tips for Comfort on Long Haul Emirates Flights

On long haul Emirates flights, passengers can expect a pillow and blanket and access to in-flight entertainment. To maximize comfort, consider wearing loose or stretchy underwear that doesn’t restrict movement.

Slip-on shoes are a must for easy movement and reduced stress during washroom visits and security checks. Walking through the plane during your flight can help circulation and provide short breaks from sitting.

Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, and avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration. Bringing a reusable water bottle can make staying hydrated even more convenient.

When it comes to skincare, consider using a face mask or spritzing rose water before the flight, as the dry cabin air can negatively affect your skin. Also, pack some travel-size toiletries and wet wipes for a quick refresh during the flight.

While enjoying the IFE system , remember to charge your personal devices or bring a portable charger.

Choosing the Best Inflatable Foot Rest

inflatable travel foot rest pillow emirates

If you have yet to try a foot rest that is inflatable, then you are probably wondering what benefits they offer. There are actually quite a few. Here are just a couple of examples to give you a better idea.

  • Reduces Pressure on your Legs – One of the issues that everyone will face on a long haul flight is the risk of developing deep vein thrombosis. Obviously, this is something that you want to avoid at all costs. One of the ways that you can reduce your risk of developing DVT is to use an inflatable foot rest .
  • More Comfortable – Another problem that you will find with long haul flights is that the seats can often be uncomfortable. This is especially true if you are shorter than average because you won’t be able to rest your feet properly. By using an inflatable foot rest you can rest your feet which will be far more comfortable.
  • You Can Adjust the Height – The big issue with plane seats is that you simply cannot adjust the height of them. If you’re a tall person then this is likely not going to be an issue for you, but if you are shorter then it is going to be uncomfortable. With a footrest that you can inflate, you are able to adjust the height until it is comfortable.

When it comes to choosing the best inflatable foot rest, there are a few things that you will need to keep in mind. One of the best things that you can do is to make sure that you read some thorough customer reviews so that you are able to make an informed decision on which is the best foot rest for you. We have taken some of the work out of this for you by testing and reviewing some of the most popular ourselves. Please see below for our reviews.

Top 3 Inflatable Foot Rests

Tecare Travel Pillow Foot Rest

  • 1 Year Warranty
  • Extras: Floor Cover, Sleep Mask
  • Inflated: 30cmx40cmx46cm
  • PVC Flocking

Tecare Travel Pillow Foot Rest Review

  • Comes with a sleep mask.
  • Comfortable and sturdy.
  • It seemed to deflate a little too quickly.

Maliton Inflatable Foot Rest Pillow for Plane, Toddler Airplane Travel Essentials, Car Seat Foot Rest for Kids, Adjustable Height Leg Pillow for Travel, Office and Home (Grey, 1Pack)

When it came to inflating this foot rest, we had no problems at all. It has two parts to inflate from and they both filled up very quickly indeed. One thing that we really liked is how firm the foot rest is when it is filled to capacity.

The PVC flocking material is really comfortable to use, both with or without shoes which is perfect for traveling long distances. The price range that you can expect to pay for this foot rest is very affordable and the extra sleep mask is a really nice extra touch.

The only issue that we seemed to have with this one is that it started to deflate quite soon into the journey. This may be just one faulty foot rest or it might be a common problem. Either way, it was a little frustrating. However, it is a very affordable product so it is worth considering for a one off.

2. AirGoods Inflatable Travel Pillow

AirGoods Inflatable travel pillow Review

  • Very comfortable.
  • Affordable.
  • The height can't be adjusted.

Travel Foot Rest Pillow - Kids Plane Bed | Inflatable Kids Travel Pillow for Expanded Airplane Leg Rest, Car or Train Travel

Upon taking the inflatable foot rest out of the packaging, we were able to inflate it within a matter of seconds. When trying it out, we were really pleased to notice how firm it is. You can tell that it is really supportive, especially on the ankles.

One thing that we really liked about this one is how soft the PVC flocking is. Even after using the foot rest for an hour it didn't feel uncomfortable in the slightest and we didn't notice it feeling hot at all which you do get with flocking sometimes.

The only drawback with this one is that the height of it cannot be adjusted. We felt that it would have been much better if it could be inflated to different heights to accommodate for taller and shorter people. Aside from that, this is a great product.

Tecare Travel Pillow for Leg Foot Rest with Sleep Mask, Inflatable Multi-Function for Kids to Lay Down or Sleep on Long Flights,Suitable for Airplanes, Cars, Buses, Trains, Office Napping, Camp

Our first impressions of this foot rest were great. The PVC flocking material is very soft to touch and feels really comfortable. When we first took the inflatable foot rest out of the packaging, we were a little concerned that it might take a long time to inflate. This was not the case; it took us a matter of minutes to inflate it to the highest level.

One of the things that we really liked about this one is that it can actually be used for multiple things. You can either use it as a foot rest, a pillow for your back, or even a comfy bed for smaller kids. It is also suitable for use around the home as well as other long distance travel other than plane.

We didn't have any issues with this foot rest at all. It remained firm throughout our use and didn't start to deflate at all, which is why we have made this one our top choice.

Hopefully now you have a better idea of the right inflatable foot rest for your next journey. Each of these three are great products and well worth considering.

Are Inflatable Footrests Allowed on Planes

Are Inflatable Footrests Allowed on Planes?

Traveling is great— you get to visit new places, meet new people along with their cultures, and enjoy diverse cuisines. Air travel especially is super fun. It’s magical how we can fly like birds without wings!

But sitting idle on an airplane can get painful pretty quickly. To increase comfort, some people choose inflatable footrests . Some are real snug and give the feel of a sofa, but are inflatable footrests allowed on planes?

They are, but not during takeoff or landing. The footrest can’t block other passengers or the flight attendants’ walkways.

But are footrests worth it, and do all airlines allow them? Read until the end as we’ll answer these questions. Some useful tips to get comfy in an airplane seat will be provided as well.

Table of Contents

Why Should You Use Portable Inflatable Footrests?

On an airplane, you’ve to sit around for hours on end. Due to this, our muscles get cramped up sore, and blood circulation throughout the body decreases. It isn’t ideal at all. If done for too long, it can even cause health complications.

To solve this issue, some people make the smart decision of getting neck rests, or in our case, footrests.

Inflatable footrests are an incredibly compact tool. They’re small enough to be put in mini-bags and can be inflated easily using your mouth or portable inflators.

Once used, you can let out the air easily to deflate them. By elevating your feet, inflatable footrests offer proper blood flow throughout your body, allowing you to rest better, and stress out less in even the most tiring journeys.

Do Airlines Allow Inflatable Footrests?

Inflatable footrests are allowed on almost all airlines. But you’re not allowed to use them during two set times.

During takeoff, it’s not allowed to use inflatable footrests due to the passenger’s safety. If they’re in an inclined position with their feet in the air during takeoff, turbulence or other discrepancies pose a risk of injury.

The other time you’re not allowed to use an inflatable footrest is during landing. For this, the same reason applies, so the flight attendants will advise you not to use footrests during this time due to safety reasons.

Your inflatable footrests can’t block the walkway either. As long as you keep these things in check, you won’t face any trouble taking inflatable footrests on an airplane.

Types of Airplane Footrests

There are mainly 2 types of airplane footrests—

1. Hammock Footrests

These are essentially hammocks for your feet. These have a dangly space to rest your feet upon. They can be hung using adjustable straps, connecting them to the front food table.

You can adjust the straps as tightly or loosely as you want. Hammock footrests are usually more compact and require less space to set up.

For a comfortable hammock footrest, we’d recommend the Travel Footrest by Andyer . It’s designed to be taken with you, especially during travel. And the footrest takes just a few seconds to set up.

2. Inflatable Footrests

They are just like they sound. They are compact and have an opening where you can blow air in to inflate. These are often comparable to mini air mattresses, as some have the feature of inflating and deflating specific areas for maximum comfort.

This type of footrest takes a bit more space and can’t be used during takeoff or landing. You’ve to make sure it doesn’t obstruct passageways for the cabin crew and other plane passengers.

Which is Better between Hammock Footrest and Inflatable Footrest?

If you’re to pick one between a hammock and an inflatable footrest, we’d recommend the inflatable footrest.

They’re much more reliable and multifunctional than hammock footrests. Hammock footrests take less space, but they don’t provide much comfort. Keeping your feet rested on a hanging surface with space in between isn’t good for your legs. It might cause too much unnecessary tension, create marks on your legs, and even obstruct blood circulation in some cases.

On the contrary, inflatable footrests are multifunctional and reliable. You can individually control the inflated air and customize it for comfort on some versions.

Yes, they take more space, but we’d recommend sticking to inflatable footrests instead, considering the comfort downsides of hammock footrests.

Do Installed Airplane Footrests Work?

First, let’s figure out if the footrest already installed on an airplane is good or not.

By default, in most airlines, you get a footrest attached to your seat. Usually, airplane footrests are just rectangular slabs attached to the bottom of your seat. You can extend outward and rest your foot upon them.

Unfortunately, these are pretty basic. In some cases, they hinder rather than improve comfort for the passenger. Most passengers complain that they’re either too stiff or too soft for their legs.

These things considered, we’d recommend getting a portable inflatable footrest specifically for you. They’re pretty inexpensive and provide perfect comfort.

Tips to Stay Comfy on A Plane

As promised, let’s go through some tips you can use to get the most comfort during your travels.

1. Ensure Proper Sleep

Air journey can be pretty taxing. To reduce tiredness, ensure you’re getting proper sleep the night before the journey. Sleeping properly on the plane is needed as well.

To improve sleep on an airplane, we’d highly recommend using a sleep mask [link to Do Sleep Masks Help Sleep In Plane]. They’re another cheap and inexpensive way to ensure a relaxing plane journey.

2. Bring Enough Snacks

Another thing we’d suggest is bringing enough snacks. Snacks are allowed on an airplane, and you should make the best use of this. Although most airplanes provide occasional snacks, it’s recommended to be prepared yourself.

Have high-calorie, energetic items like snickers or peanuts. They provide instant energy, and you’ll feel less tired throughout the journey.

3. Proper Footwear and Clothing

People tend to wear their most expensive and flashy clothing and shoes during travel. But this isn’t the right approach. It is often overlooked during air travel.

As for shoes, you should avoid heavy shoes such as boots or flashy high heels. These aren’t the best thing for multiple-hour journeys. Instead, you should stick to the comfiest pair of house shoes you have. Sandals or slippers are ideal.

In the case of clothes, multiple layers of clothing are best. It is because you can take one of them off and have another ready-to-go underneath. So, you can wear a nice dress on top and have a comfier, homely dress underneath to last you for the rest of the flight.

4. Inflatable Footrests

And finally, inflatable footrests are a great way to stay comfortable on an airplane. If you add them with the tips we’ve mentioned until now, you’re sure to have one of the best airplane journeys of your life!

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually, the airport will keep the product with them. They’ll be treated as a confiscated or lost product. If they aren’t illegal, they might be sold or donated to charity. Either way, in most cases, the airport will have full control over what happens with the item next.

In matters of space, inflatable footrests aren’t a bad bet at all. It’ll take equal space of maybe a mini blanket or air mattress. You can even carry it as hand luggage if you haven’t other things with you.

Yes! Seat cushions are allowed on almost all airlines, and you can carry them with you safely. If you have a higher-class ticket, say business or first class, the airlines will provide a good neck rest or seat cushion for your convenience.

Ans. Unfortunately, airlines like British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, United Airways, and a few don’t allow inflatable footrests. The reasons are mostly safety issues. But rules are subject to change. To be absolutely sure, contact the help desk before packing one for your next flight.

We’d recommend inflatable footrests because hammock footrests are a bit inconvenient. They’re not allowed on most airlines as well compared to inflatable footrests.

Final Thoughts

If someone traveling by air asks you, “ are inflatable footrests allowed on planes?” you’d be able to answer them effortlessly now.

As a final note, we’d strongly urge you to contact your airlines before packing one for your next trip. If they’re allowed, congrats; you might just have one of the best flights of your life. But don’t be disheartened if they’re not. You can follow my trips and still have a comfortable flight. I wish you a safe journey.

  1. Special assistance and requests

Children over 12 already fly on an adult fare and are able to fly alone without our Unaccompanied Minor service. However, for an extra fee, you can make a special request for the service for young passengers aged 12 to 15. The fee is USD 50 per young passenger for every leg of the journey.

  2. Flytots and other children's sleeping aides on Emirates
