"Seen purely as a visual tapestry, there is simply nothing else like it. Suddenly, you're 4 years old again, and you've been taken to the circus for the first time. You can only marvel at the exotic procession of animals before you: the giraffes and the elephants and the hippopotamuses and all those birds in balletic flight. Such is the transporting magic wrought by the opening 10 minutes of The Lion King, [director Julie] Taymor has introduced a whole new vocabulary of images to the Broadway blockbuster." The New York Times Ben Brantley

‘Lion King’ Stage Show Coming To Disney+

in Entertainment

Rafiki in 'The Lion King' musical

The Lion King  (1994) is one of the brightest jewels in Disney’s crown. Even after a Broadway show, a series of sequels and spinoffs, and a live-action remake by Jon Favreau , the original still remains one of the titans of the animation industry. This month, Disney is getting ready to celebrate the beloved film in a huge way, and you don’t need to shuck out hundreds of dollars for tickets, either.

Adult Simba and Nala with Rafiki holding their baby in 'The Lion King'

This summer,  The Lion King  will celebrate its 30th anniversary. A milestone for any beloved Disney film certainly deserves a showstopping event that celebrates the film, fans, and everyone who made it such a success. In honor of the anniversary, The Lion King: Live at the Hollywood Bowl will not only take over the titular concert venue but also come roaring onto Disney+ .

Related:  Would Simba Have Been the Next Scar If Mufasa Survived?

It was recently announced that Jennifer Hudson, Nathan Lane, Jeremy Irons, Ernie Sabella, Billy Eichner, Jason Weaver, Bradley Gibson, and the cast of The Lion King  on Broadway would be joined by North West, Heather Headley and Lebo M. in the production and that the concert would be filmed and presented on Disney+. However, Disney is notorious for squeezing every ounce out of their most-successful properties. The studio definitely won’t stop there.

The King Has Returned

A silhouette of a lion stands on a rocky outcrop against a red and orange sunset backdrop. The text "Disney The Lion King 30" is displayed below, with a stylized lion face incorporated into the number 30, celebrating the legacy of The Lion King.

Last week, the official Disney+ press release made the following announcement as North West joined the all-star cast,

“North West, making her Hollywood Bowl debut, alongside Tony® and GRAMMY® Award-winning Broadway star Heather Headley and Grammy Award winner, Tony Award nominee, and the voice and spirit of The Lion King, Lebo M., will join “Lion King” franchise originals Billy Eichner, Bradley Gibson, Ernie Sabella, Jason Weaver, Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane and special guest Jennifer Hudson on the Hollywood Bowl stage for the previously announced “Disney’s The Lion King 30th Anniversary – A Live-to-Film Concert Event” on May 24 and May 25. Emmy® Award-winning Disney Branded Television and Fulwell 73 Productions will reunite to capture the magic of these performances in the second music concert installment in their franchise, with the Disney+ Original special “The Lion King at the Hollywood Bowl” streaming at a later date. The special will celebrate the 30-year evolution of “The Lion King,” from the original 1994 animated film to the 1998 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical to the 2019 dramatic live-action film.”

You don’t have to be as wise as Rafiki to know what a tall order that description is, and that this will be far more than just the average Disney in-concert event . Like other events at the famous venue, Disney films at the Hollywood Bowl have traditionally been large and lavish events that bring together a bevy of stars of both the animated film in question and top performing recording artists to celebrate the movie’s success.

Related:  Multiple New Characters Reportedly Featuring In ‘The Lion King’ Prequel

That’s all well and good and certainly to be expected from something as significant as The Lion King ,  but a concert event for something with Simba’s reputation needs much more than a reunion show. In short, Disney needs to go bigger.

From  Hamilton  to  The Lion King

Lion King

This isn’t the first time a Hollywood Bowl show has made it onto Disney’s streaming service; that honor goes to Encanto  (2021) . However,  The Lion King  has remained one of the company’s most successful animated features for decades. While the Hollywood Bowl show is exciting, the Broadway adaptation should have come first.

Related:  A New Timon and Pumbaa Disney+ Series Is Reportedly In The Works!

Disney+ already has filmed productions of  Newsies and  Hamilton   ready to watch, so why isn’t its most successful show there as well? The Lion King  is currently one of the longest-running stage shows in the history of Broadway , premiering three years after the original animated feature. A filmed version of the beloved production made famous by Julie Taymor and her vivid visions of the African savannah has been long overdue for years.

the-lion-king-musical-anniversary

At the time of writing, Disney has made no moves to push the stage show to its more accessible platform. A $7.99 Disney+ subscription is way more affordable than a minimum $110.75 ticket to the New York stage show at the Minskoff Theater. However, it might not be long before the company takes that plunge.

If Disney is willing to get such big names to come back together after almost 30 years, who’s to say the powers that be won’t eventually push for a filmed version of the Broadway smash sometime thereafter? Stranger things have happened.

Review: THE LION KING National Tour at Durham Performing Arts Center

The King has returned to DPAC!

pixeltracker

Based on Disney’s 1994 animated film musical of the same name, The Lion King tells the story of Simba, a young lion who is supposed to succeed his father, Mufasa, as King of Pride Rock. But when Simba's uncle, Scar, kills Mufasa, Simba runs away from home after being tricked into thinking that he was responsible. As he comes of age, Simba learns some valuable perspective to go back and take his rightful place as King.

About 8 years ago, I reviewed the national tour of this Broadway blockbuster when it last came to Durham. Now, it’s back at such perfect timing. Not only will the original animated film turn 30 years old next month, but Disney Theatrical Productions is also currently celebrating its 30th anniversary. It all began when the company brought Beauty & the Beast to Broadway in 1994, and they’ve been at it ever since. This was actually my third time seeing The Lion King onstage overall. I first saw it on tour at Playhouse Square in Cleveland in 2007 when I was 13 years old and living in Northeast Ohio at the time.

As I was watching it again at DPAC, I still got chills. Julie Taymor ’s staging is just as epic as ever. ‘Circle of Life’ alone continues to be one of the best staged opening numbers in Broadway history. All of the ensemble entering onto the stage from the audience throughout the show continues to be very immersive. Garth Fagan ’s choreography continues to be stunning (especially when it comes to effective sequences where there’s no talking nor singing, just dance and visuals). The overall visual esthetic continues to be very dazzling, doing an excellent job of suggesting an African safari on stage.

Yet at its core is the greatest character arc for any Disney hero. We see Simba grow from a cub who” just can’t wait to be king” to losing his confidence to eventually getting it back as a grown up lion. Roger Allers & Irene Mecchi ’s book successfully preserves that from the original animated film while also fleshing out the plot into a full fledged stage musical. All of the songs (consisting of the hits Elton John & Tim Rice wrote for the cartoon as well as additional material by Lebo M., Mark Mancina , Jay Rifkin , Julie Taymor , & Hans Zimmer ) are brought to glorious life by the whole cast and orchestra.

Darian Sanders nails Simba’s arc as does Bryce Christian Thompson , who portrays him as a cub. Watching that unfold before the audience’s eyes is quite astonishing. Sanders in particular especially has a powerhouse moment with his big number in Act II, ‘Endless Night.’ Peter Hargrave gives a very Shakespearean performance as Scar, which is quite fitting given that The Lion King was inspired by the story of Shakespeare’s Hamlet . He commands the stage throughout the show, including his two big numbers, ‘Be Prepared’ and ‘The Madness of King Scar.’ Gerald Ramsey is very caring as Mufasa, sharing such a heartfelt moment with Young Simba in Act I with his big song, ‘They Live in You.’ Mukelisiwe Goba is so memorable as Rafiki, the wise mandrill who leads Simba on his journey. Nick LaMedica as Mufasa’s anxious, yet loyal assistant Zazu successfully makes his comic relief feel spontaneous. I definitely still got a kick out of his line in Act I where he breaks the fourth wall. Khalifa White gives a strong performance as Simba’s childhood friend, Nala, who leads a powerful number in Act II titled ‘Shadowlands.’  Ritisha Chakraborty is also quite talented portraying that character as a cub. Nick Cordileone & John E. Brady both make for a terrific comic duo as Timon & Pumbaa, respectively.

Many generations have continued to fall in love with The Lion King for the very first time to this day. I was fortunate enough to have attended the show with a friend who had never seen it before, and now it’s her favorite Broadway show. This may have been my third time, but it still proves to be very emotionally empowering. That’s how powerful an impact Lion King still has on audiences. If you’ve never seen it before, run, don’t walk. If you have seen it before, there’s always a good excuse to go again.

The national tour is currently running at the Durham Performing Arts Center through June 9th. For more information, please click here .
