The efforts of this programme include replanting 80 hectares of lost seagrass meadows across Loch Craignish, trialling new methodologies of seagrass replanting at scale and efficiently sequestering carbon from the atmosphere through marine restoration. Seagrass has the potential to sequester carbon at up to 35x the rate of rainforests, therefore making it an integral ingredient in fighting the climate crisis and offsetting the emissions of your trip.

We calculate the total carbon emissions for each trip through the Sustainable Travel International Calculator and are able to determine how much it would cost to offset this figure through Seawilding. We booked a 2.15 pm flight on British Airways from London Heathrow (LHR) Terminal 5 to Venice (VCE) on 20 Aug 2024. After being loaded onto the plane around 3 hours late, we were quickly unloaded, and our flight was disappointingly canceled.

As a result, British Airways put us up in the Airport Hilton Terminal 5 overnight, so even though this isn’t really a luxury option, I thought it would be worth penning together a review in case you need to overnight in London Heathrow for Terminal 5.

I have also compared this Airport Hilton to the Sofitel Terminal 5, as we stayed at the Sofitel a few years back. This comparison may help you make the decision if you are choosing between these two hotels.

Firstly, this hotel is not located at London Heathrow Terminal 5. It is a 15-minute drive from the Terminal and can be reached by taxi for £30 GBP from Terminal 5 (£40 GBP if you order a return trip early in the morning) or by a regular Hotel Hoppa bus service, which we did not take but should be considerably cheaper. I believe the Hopper costs £5-10 per person, but you would do well to check this as we didn’t take the Hopper.

This Hilton is modern and fairly basic, as you would expect from an Airport hotel. A large atrium in the center of the hotel houses a bar and reception desk on the ground floor and a restaurant on a balcony level up a winding flight of stairs from the main lobby.

The design is modern and pleasing to the eye, with funky purple lighting and lots of fun bobbly lights and seating. There’s a bar at one end of the lobby, and the main reception desk occupies much of the remaining lobby area. There are two lifts to the rooms to one side of the large reception desk, which take you to the rooms.

The whole area is modern and pleasant, no complaints. The double/triple height ceilings in this area made it feel spacious and gave the whole hotel a “heart” and center point to meet and enjoy the hotel’s facilities.

The staff here were friendly. They ordered our taxi at the right time, 4:00 am, which was essential for our redeye flight from Terminal 5, so their accuracy was appreciated. They also did their best to be helpful when hundreds of British Airways passengers poured through their doors after our flight cancellation.

The rooms at this Airport Hilton T5 were large for a budget hotel, with a double bed, a seating area, a desk, and a storage area. The bathroom was also generously sized, with funky purple lighting under the counters. It wasn’t perfectly clean, with a few stains here and there, and the carpet felt a bit used, but this is an airport hotel, so we weren’t expecting the Ritz.

The towels were fluffy, the bathroom had a powerful shower in the bath, the bed sheets were clean and fresh, and the pillows were decent. Most of what we needed was there. Unfortunately, the beds weren’t great; they were a bit like sleeping on a board and were very firm. Again, this is an airport hotel so expectations have to be managed. However, if you are looking for a more comfortable bed pre-flight at Terminal 5, pick the Sofitel, as their beds are more comfortable.

We had dinner in the restaurant on the balcony overlooking the reception area. It was a buffet set up by British Airways with a nice salad, rice, warm vegetables, and a chicken and vegetarian Thai curry, which was surprisingly good. There was also a dessert, but that wasn’t as great.

Alcoholic drinks were also included for us by British Airways, although we didn’t feel like a drink after such an exhausting day. Honestly, we were so grateful for the hot curry after the flight mess. It kept us going long enough to unpack our pajamas and get some sleep.

The setting in this restaurant was airy, with plenty of seating and a bar in the middle. The seating was not on top of each other and had views over the foyer, and the staff tried to do their best in a busy setting. The lighting was particularly good, not too bright, and after many hours at the airport, it was nice to sit somewhere with muted rather than strip lighting.

We missed the breakfast service as our flight left at just past 6:00 am, so we had a Club Europe Buisness Class breakfast onboard the flight instead.

Review: British Airways Club Europe Breakfast

We experienced the British Airways Club Europe Business Class breakfast onboard an early morning flight from London Heathrow (LHR) to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) last week. I never book Redeye flights. However, we experienced their early morning service a few days ago due to a flight mess-up, so I thought it would be worth reviewing.

The Airport Hilton Terminal 5 does what it says on the box. It is an airport hotel near the airport, with parking and a bus to and from the Terminal. This is not a destination hotel, but it is functional and has generously large rooms and decent pillows. I would recommend having a meal in their restaurant on the mezzanine. It was a really nice setting (for an airport hotel), and the curry buffet that their kitchen provided was really good.

The Reeds at South Lodge, Sussex: luxury lakeside lodges with a vineyard and wild swimming

The award-winning spa hotel has just launched eight shiny new eco lodges featuring outdoor bathtubs and their own private sun-deck. Katie Strick checks in

“We call it the Reeds-mobile,” says Beth, our friendly host and concierge, as she zooms us down to one of South Lodge ’s new luxury lakeside lodges, The Reeds , in a brand new electric buggy.

Our lodge, Dragonfly, certainly has a luxury feel, with two-storey windows, a copper whirlpool bath overlooking the lake, and homemade macarons and Ridgeview fizz awaiting us in a chic wooden ice bucket. Beth beckons us over, keen to show us to her favourite part of the lodge: the hatch next to the front door, in which staff will leave our breakfast hamper in the morning.

Twelve hours later — one seven-course tasting menu and many glasses of fizz down — we see what she means. Fresh fruit and granola, crusty sourdough and gorgeous fluffy pastries await us, ready to eat on our private sun-deck while a small group of wild swimmers glide past us with their tow floats.

A couple of hours later, we’re down there in the lake ourselves, bobbing about while Cameron our lifeguard stands ready to hand us our South Lodge-branded DryRobes. I could get used to this kind of lakeside living.

South Lodge hotel’s eight eco-lodges opened last month. They are the latest addition to the award-winning 96-room hotel since the launch of its £15 million spa in 2019.

Luxury and sustainability are the order of the day here, with charming little swing seats dotted around the grounds, a reed-filled natural pool at the centre of the spa, and locally-sourced ingredients at the heart of the menu at the hotel’s Michelin-star restaurant, The Pass, by chef Ben Wilkinson.

From guided swimming sessions to the on-site vineyard, here’s what to expect.

Where is it?

Just south of Horsham and Crawley and a 45-minute train ride and 10-minute taxi from central London, on the edge of the South Downs. Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens is just down the road, and Bolney Wine Estate is a 10-minute drive away. You won’t go thirsty.

Expect natural woods, plump sage sofas and plant-filled living rooms. Green marble bathrooms boasts baskets of white fluffy towels.

While rooms in the main hotel have a historic feel, the lodges feel contemporary and bright. No dark panelling or four-poster beds here down by the lake: instead, think upcycled, locally-sourced or naturally-derived materials, neutral colour palettes and flashes of yellow and sage.

There’s a zen, calming feel to the place, like you’ve just walked into a high-end yoga studio — and you can make it one, if you like. There are yoga mats available to use in each lodge for some morning flow on your private terrace. Take a glass of wine out there for golden hour and watch the sunset over the lake, either from your sun-lounger or the heavenly copper whirlpool bath. There’s plenty of space for two.

Which room? 

There are eight lodges in total: six around the perimeter of hotel’s newly-filled wild swimming lake, and two spa lodges slightly set back from the water. Each one is accessed via a short woodland walk or electric buggy ride — just call reception and ask for a lift. Lodge number three is wheelchair accessible, featuring a wet room shower with a lamp, pull cords and downstairs bedroom.

The six lakeside lodges are geared towards families, with a large naturally-lit living area, two bedrooms and a private terrace with a dining area, sun-loungers and an outdoor bath (decks are carefully designed with privacy in mind, so you can enjoy candlelit suppers without being overlooked). The main living area is open-plan and double-height, with remote-controlled curtains unveiling one of the best lake views of any hotel in Britain. Spa-lovers and honeymooners should choose one of the spa lodges, which are designed specifically for couples, with a downstairs lounge, upstairs bedroom and private steam shower, outdoor whirlpool bath and infrared halotherapy sauna.

Our lakeside lodge Dragonfly was decked out with everything from an electric fire for cosy autumn evenings to a small kitchenette with a fridge, Soho House-style crockery and a complimentary snack drawer. The exclusive Pelegrims toiletries were made using samples from the hotel’s on-site vineyard — one of many sweet personal touches. Another was Lord Sussex, the Jellycat sheep toy left out on the bed in a nod to the lodge’s family feel and the hotel’s mascot.

Food & drink

Beef fillet with smoked emulsion and truffle. Hand-dived scallop with English peas, chipotle and confit garlic butter. Lemon gnocchi with rocket and coriander and basil sauce.

The food at South Lodge is one of the highlights, from brunch on a sun terrace overlooking the spa to seven-course tasting menus at the hotel’s child-free restaurant, The Pass by chef Ben Wilkinson, which holds a Michelin star and four AA Rosettes.

Wilkinson comes out to introduce many of the dishes himself and there’s an intimate feel to the place, with space for just 28 diners at a time and an open kitchen where you can watch the seasonally-rotating menu being made, from day boat turbot to strawberry sorbet with elderflower.

All seven courses are exquisite and the wine pairing is worth doing, though make sure you leave room for your next meal. The breakfast or charcuterie hamper delivery option is a highlight of a stay in one of the lodges, with fresh bread, fruit, granola and yoghurt cleverly and stylishly delivered to your hatch, and a ‘collect hamper’ option on the bedside tablets so staff know to come up and clear up when you’re finished.

We enjoyed a sunny hamper breakfast on our private terrace one morning, and brunch at Botanica — a more casual, dairy-free, Mediterranean-inspired dining option above the spa — on the Sunday. There’s also Camellia, a wood-panelled, white tablecloth-style restaurant for more formal lunches and dinners, with a focus on local ingredients including vegetables grown in the on-site garden.

Kitchenettes come with tea and coffee-making facilities and little bottles of semi-skimmed milk in the fridge. Just call reception and staff will happily bring you alternative milks if you fancy.

Like many of the hotels in the Exclusive Collection — a B Corp certified independent group which includes Fanhams Hall and Pennyhill Park — one of the main focuses of a stay at South Lodge is the spa, a 44,000 square-foot, nature-inspired haven featuring an indoor pool, outdoor hydrotherapy pool and natural dipping pool, thermal suite and 14 treatment rooms offering everything from massages to manicures. It’s all airy and bright, with guests invited to relax with a mint tea overlooking the outdoor pool after their treatment and a large spa garden with multiple lounge areas for summer visitors. There are multiple spa packages available for day guests.

Guests at The Reeds have access to the spa throughout their stay, and can book to swim in the lake if they fancy an even wilder swim than the reed-filled pool up at the spa. The water has been tested by the Water Association and is tested daily by staff — but no jumping in from your deck. Staff ensure you sign a waiver agreeing to wild swim from the specifically-allocated jetty, accessible via a little wood-chip path, where small groups of guests are escorted by a guide and each given a toe float for safety and a robe for warming up. Fun fact: the lake is home to water lilies exclusively sourced from Monet’s renowned garden in Giverny, the only location outside of France. 

The estate’s grounds also include tennis courts and a vineyard spread across two sites, one producing Chardonnay, the other Pinot Noir. Local Sussex wine estate Ridgeview is the hotel’s wine partner, maintaining the vineyard and primed for its next harvest.

Dogs are welcome at South Lodge and there are maps of nearby walking routes available at reception via a QR code. We arrived with every intention to head off-site for a walk and or a run. Did we? Of course not. We were having far too lovely a time exploring the 93 acres of grounds.

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Singapore.

Arrive in Singapore, where you will be greeted by one of our local representatives. Then take a private transfer as you head into the city to your hotel. The rest of your day is at your leisure to enjoy your hotel facilities, or venture out to discover the shopping and dining opportunities on your doorstep.

With your guide, explore the popular districts of Singapore, from the heritage buildings of the Civic District, to the street vendors and temples of Chinatown and the lively entertainment of the River, ending at Gardens by the Bay. Return back to the hotel in the afternoon with the rest of your day at leisure.

The morning is yours to soak up some more of Singapore before boarding your cruise. You might like to wander around Chinatown, visiting temples like Ma Co Po, which is dedicated (appropriately enough) to the Goddess of the Sea — look up to see candy-bright ornamentations on the ceiling beams. Then, make your way to the dock to board your Celebrity cruise ship, where you have the afternoon to settle into your stateroom before you officially cast off at around 6pm.

Your cruise begins with a couple of days on the open ocean en route to Bali, allowing you to ease into life on board and explore all the activities on offer. For example, your ship has its own neatly trimmed grass lawn where you can play croquet or boules. Come evening, you have a choice of dining venues, and meals at most restaurants are included in your voyage, as are a wide selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

Today is another day at sea to spend as you wish. You might like to try out the ship’s panoramic jogging track, before lounging in The Solarium, an adults-only pool and hot tub area. In the evening, you could hit the tables at the ship’s Fortune Casino, sip a cocktail in the Martini Bar, or visit Quasar, the retro-themed nightclub for post-dinner dancing.

Dock in Benoa, a beach and fishing village that’s your launchpad for Bali. Your ship offers several tours that let you explore the island more widely: we recommend visiting Pura Luhur Batukaru, a serene garden temple of mossy walkways, pools, and multi-tiered, teetering meru towers. Or, take a 4x4 trip into the mountains to the emerald rice terraces of Jatiluwih, where you’ll be served lunch and drinks to the gentle melodies of a Balinese rindik (bamboo xylophone).

Today you might like to visit Cellar Masters, where you can taste wines and have masterclasses with on-board sommeliers. Or, you could try a Hot Glass Class, where you can watch professional glassblowers at work and have a go at this art form yourself. For something more sedate, the ship has a peaceful library with lots of secluded reading nooks.

Your ship has a state-of-the-art gym along with a variety of fitness classes — you could take one today, or use the services of the ship’s personal trainer. Follow it up with a treatment in The Spa, which also has the Persian Garden, an enclave with floor-to-ceiling windows and heated loungers.

With World War II history, Aboriginal art galleries and a pleasant waterfront, you might like to spend the day simply wandering around Darwin under your own steam. Or, take one of your ship’s tours and get out into the bush and national parks of the Northern Territory. Litchfield National Park can be visited in a day, and you’ll discover waterfalls and giant termite mounds among the raw, sandstone escarpments. There’s even the option to observe it all on a helicopter tour.

Today is another chance to kick back on board as your ship makes its way south to Queensland’s coastline. Sometimes, on sea days, afternoon tea will be served in one of the ship’s lounges. You might also be interested in taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the ship with a crew member. In the evening, you could watch live entertainment in the theatre, or a film in either the on-board cinema or your stateroom.

One delight of leisurely days at sea is the chance to order breakfast to be delivered to your stateroom. Dining on your balcony is usually a white-tablecloth affair — and we find it makes for a particularly soothing start to the day. Later, you could attend one of the ship’s trivia sessions or quizzes, a mixology class, or a dance class.

You’re docked in Queensland, and we suggest making the most of your time in this lush, tropical region by taking the ship’s guided tour to Mossman Gorge, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Daintree Rainforest. You hike along the gorge on a boardwalk, culminating with a view over a waterfall. This is also the first of three opportunities on this cruise to experience the Great Barrier Reef — today, you could visit Agincourt Reef by catamaran to snorkel or swim.

The Great Barrier Reef beckons again today, and there’s another chance to snorkel or even explore the reef in a glass-bottomed boat. Alternatively, you could head inland to ride the Kuranda Scenic Railway, with drinks delivered to your seat in a club-class carriage. You’ll disembark to browse the craft shops of the mountain village of Kuranda before gliding serenely back down through the canopy via the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.

Docking at Airlie Beach, you’re once again able to explore the Great Barrier Reef by catamaran or take a fixed-wing flight over the white sands and bright turquoise waters of the Whitsunday Islands. You could explore harder-to-reach, untamed parts of the Whitsundays in a high-speed inflatable raft, stopping to swim and looking out for local bird and marine life with your guide. Wildlife lovers also have the chance to take a small-boat safari cruise down the Proserpine River to observe saltwater crocodiles in the wild.

The past few days in port are likely to have been action-packed, so you might like to use your final two days at sea to unwind before the next chapter of your trip begins once you dock in Sydney. You could relax and swim on the Pool Deck, have a coffee in the Sky Observation Lounge, and perhaps visit the Art Gallery.

Your ship offers whisky and bourbon tastings along with food and wine pairings, so this could make an enjoyable activity for your last day if you haven’t already tried it. Otherwise, return to your preferred lounge or drinks spot on the ship, and revisit the hot tub in The Solarium or the pool deck for a final dip with a view.

Set your alarm clock — your ship arrives into Sydney Harbour in the early morning, docking around 6:30am. You can witness its entry, which is something of an iconic moment in the world of cruising, from your balcony or on deck. Once you’ve disembarked, the day is yours to design. We suggest taking a stroll around the Botanic Gardens or pottering around The Rocks district for views of the Harbour and Sydney Opera House.

You have a free day today to explore Sydney at your own pace. We recommend climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or going further from the city and experiencing a bush-walking trip in the Blue Mountains. You can take the train there or hire a car for the day.

After breakfast, make your way to the waterfront where you’ll meet your skipper and board a luxury sports cruiser. Relax on board as you weave around Port Jackson Harbour, taking in views of the Rocks, Darling Harbour, and the well-known Sydney Opera House. You'll have lunch at Sydney's most prestigious yacht club before docking and having the rest of the day to spend in the city.

Leave the hustle and bustle behind this morning as you take a taxi to the airport in time for your flight to Brisbane. From here you'll be met by your driver and taken to your accommodation in Noosa by private transfer. Spend the rest of the day unwinding at your accommodation.

Experience a cruise along the Cooloola coastline today that travels from Lake Cootharaba to the start of the Noosa Everglades. Hidden behind the sandbanks is a vast array of mangroves, mud islands and swamps, where a myriad of migratory seabirds, turtles, and dugongs reside. You'll then stop at Fig Tree Point where you'll paddle upstream in a classic Canadian-style canoe. You'll finish the tour and have the rest of the day to unwind in Noosa.

After an adventurous day yesterday, we recommend slowing things down today. You could head to the beach and spend the day reading, or continue the adventure if you've got the energy, and walk along the Noosa Heads coastal track.

After checking out of your accommodation, your driver will collect you and transfer you in a private vehicle to your accommodation in Brisbane — a city boasting more than 300 sunny days each year. After you've checked in you'll have the rest of the day to relax or explore. We suggest following the self-guided walk in the Botanic Gardens or joining a walking tour with one of the volunteer guides. Alternatively, you might like to visit the Queensland Art Gallery.

On your last day in Australia, you have the option to relax in the city or venture a little further to Mount Coot-Tha Summit, where you can take in sweeping views across the city skyline.
