Welcome to the home of the award-winning & internationally renowned Manchester Music Tours – created by Inspiral Carpets’ drummer – Craig Gill

Craig built up a series of music tours over the years to reflect the popularity of some of Manchester’s most celebrated music exports and celebrate the creativity that has come from our city. Tours across Greater Manchester include The Smiths , Oasis , The Stone Roses and Joy Division/New Order and they continue and evolve to honour his legacy to Manchester music.

Since 2005, music fans from all over the world have made the pilgrimage to visit dozens of locations that illustrate Greater Manchester’s rich musical heritage and significance – from Salford Lads Club to Sifters Records in Burnage!

Since Craig’s passing in 2016, his family strive to continue his legacy. The tours are now delivered by Craig’s wife, Rose Gill, who also experienced the ‘Madchester’ music scene firsthand. The tours also feature occasional special guest hosts that share their unique experiences and anecdotes of Manchester.

Manchester is a city steeped in musical history, with a vibrant scene that has produced some of the most iconic bands in the world. From The Smiths to Oasis, Joy Division to The Stone Roses, Manchester has played a pivotal role in shaping the British music landscape. The Manchester Music Walking Tour is the perfect way to explore this rich cultural heritage.

Led by an expert guide with an encyclopedic knowledge of Manchester’s music scene, the tour takes you on a journey through the city’s musical history, visiting iconic venues and landmarks along the way. The tour typically lasts around 1 ¾ hours and covers a distance of approximately two miles.

The tour visits the Northern Quarter, a bohemian area of the city known for its independent boutiques, street art and music venues. You will also see where the legendary Hacienda nightclub once stood. The Hacienda was once the epicentre of Manchester’s post-punk and acid-house scenes, along with the Free Trade Hall, where Bob Dylan famously went electric in 1966.

Other notable stops on the tour include the former home of Factory Records, the record label that launched Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays, and the Salford Lads Club, immortalized in The Smiths’ famous album cover for The Queen Is Dead. Fans of Oasis will also enjoy a visit to the boardwalk in the heart of the city, where the Gallagher brothers famously posed for a photo shoot early in their career.

Along the way, the guide will share fascinating stories and trivia about the bands, venues and people that shaped Manchester’s musical history. How long is the route?

• The tour is approximately 1.5  miles long .

Is the tour wheelchair accessible?

• The tour is not suitable for a wheelchair due to the pavements and uneven surfaces on the route. British Sign Language is not provided on the tour.

Do children need to be accompanied?

• All people under 18 (i.e. 17 years old and younger) must be accompanied by an adult (aged 18 years or over) on all tours

Dancing with fellow music enthusiasts, I felt a strong sense of community and shared passion . The Warehouse Project truly lived up to its reputation as one of the best music events in Manchester.

Manchester and Salford have long been a focal point for music in the north of England. The city has produced legendary bands such as The Smiths, Oasis, Joy Division, The Hollies through to modern names such as The 1975, Blossoms and Bugzy Malone. It inspired the ‘Madchester’ movement that brought us bands such as The Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses and was home to legendary venues such as The Hacienda. 

You can’t talk about Manchester or the surrounding towns without mentioning the music. Music was and has always been a way for people to let go, unwind and get away from the trials of everyday life, and it holds a special place in hard-working towns. 

If you’re staying with us at our university accommodation in Manchester/Salford then you’ve got plenty of time to explore everything that this historic city has to offer. While many landmarks have been torn down or redeveloped over the years during Manchester’s ongoing modernisation, you’ll still find blue plaques on walls where iconic moments happened, and there are still a few spots left standing that you can visit. Salford Lads Club - The Smiths

Perhaps most famed for adorning the inner sleeve of The Smiths ‘The Queen is Dead’ LP featuring songs such as ‘There is a Light That Never Goes Out’. The Salford Lads Club is a must-visit for any fan of The Smiths to recreate their own version of one of The Smiths’ most iconic photos. 

The Salford Lads Club has been hosting activities for local young people for many a year and has a room dedicated to The Smiths that you can visit if you email ahead of time.

Epping Walk Bridge - Joy Division

While this bridge may not mean much to some, to Joy Division fans it’s a piece of history. Located in the Hulme area of Manchester, not far from Salford Quays is the bridge where one of the more famous photos of Joy Division were taken by photographer Kevin Cummins.

Sifters Record Shop - Oasis

Unfortunately many key Oasis locations such as The Boardwalk, where they played their first gig, or the Canal Bar, where they played the gig that would turn them into icons in the eyes of many, are no more. However if you’re an Oasis fan it’s worth visiting Sifters Record Shop where the Gallagher brothers used to get their music. It’s even mentioned in the song ‘Shakermaker’ in the line ‘Mr Sifter sold me songs when I was just sixteen’. If you’re a music fan, then an iconic record shop is no doubt somewhere you’d like to visit.

The Temple of Convenience - Elbow

‘There’s a hole in my neighbourhood down which of late I cannot help but fall’ one of the iconic lines from Elbow’s ‘Grounds for Divorce’ actually refers to this bar. Located in a former Victorian public toilet it is quite literally a hole in the road on a street where singer Guy Garvey used to live.

Gone But Not Forgotten

As a city, Manchester has changed a lot over the last few decades and many buildings that are legendary to Manchester music fans have either been knocked down or repurposed. Despite no longer being there, their impact on the Manchester music scene is a lasting one and many are commemorated with a blue plaque where they once stood. Here are a few of those locations:

The Boardwalk

The Boardwalk is known as the place where Oasis made their live debut and somewhere they used to practice. The venue was actually somewhere they played multiple times and was also played by other Manchester titans such as The Charlatans, The Stone Roses and more. 

One of Britain’s legendary music venues, the club closed in 1999 and was converted into modern apartments. There is still a blue plaque on the building which is known to draw hardcore Oasis fans for a photo opportunity.

Where was the Boardwalk? Little Peter Street, M15 4PS

The Lesser Free Trade Hall The Free Trade Hall still stands in Manchester, but it’s now home to a hotel chain. This building is probably one of the most significant in Manchester music history. It’s famed as the location of the ‘gig that changed the world’ when the Sex Pistols played to a crowd of around 40 people in 1976. The gig itself wasn’t anything that stood out from other Sex Pistols shows, the unique aspect of this concert was that of those 40 people in the crowd, many went on to form some of Manchester’s biggest bands.

It is said that in attendance that day were people who would be inspired enough that they would go on and form The Smiths, Joy Division, The Fall and The Buzzcocks. Talk about influential! There’s no plaque at this location, but it’s worth snapping a photo to say you visited a piece of music history.

Where was the Lesser Free Trade Hall? Peter Street, M2 5QR

The Hacienda We can’t write a blog on landmarks of Manchester music without mentioning the Hacienda. A nightclub and music venue, The Hacienda was financed by Factory Records and members of the band New Order. It rose to fame during the ‘Madchester’ years which eventually made way for the birth of Acid House and made the Hacienda world famous.

At one point a shining beacon of a burgeoning music scene, the club was marred by security issues and the growing drug scene. The Hacienda lost its entertainment licence in 1997 before eventually going bankrupt. The nightclub was demolished in 2002 and replaced by modern flats. A commemorative plaque is all that remains of what was once the centre of the world for many ravers of the late 80s and early 90s.

Artefacts from the Hacienda can be found at the Manchester Science and Industry Museum along with some posters from the height of the club.

The Manchester music scene is one of the most influential and famous music scenes in the world. Okay, we’re biased, but we’re sticking with it because Manchester is home to some of the most famous bands in the world, and we’re still producing incredible music.

The Music Scene in Manchester is Stayin’ Alive, Stayin’ Alive…

We’re not even sorry. In the 60’s and early 70’s Chorlton-cum-Hardy born the Bee Gees made their way onto the disco scene with a beat so catchy we literally use it for CPR training today. That Saturday Night Fever feeling was definitely felt throughout Greater Manchester, especially at Pomona Docks, which in the 70’s was home to the region’s first floating nightclub .

What should you do with a drunken sailor? Take them to The North Westward Ho! which was literally a nightclub on a ship at the docks with seven different bars and an overflow venue in the form of a parked RAF jet next door. It was nicknamed ‘The Love Boat’ and we’ll let you decide why. Boozers would go and dance, hit heads on low beams and fall down the ship’s steps. Boogying on a boat in Greater Manchester at the height of disco fever music, what more could you want?

History of the Manchester Music Scene: The Birthplace of Indie

The late 70’s saw the opening of Manchester legend ‘The Factory’, styled in homage to the New York club of the same name. It attracted an array of touring bands as well as upcoming pop punk groups. The ‘Factory Nights’ were so successful that in 1980 Tony Wilson, Alan Erasmus and Rob Gretton set up Factory Records and released its first LP, Joy Division’s ‘Unknown Pleasure’.

The very next year they went on to open The Haçienda. It was cheap entry, cheap drinks, great music and is a huge part of Manchester’s music history. Though it was hugely popular and regularly packed, it actually cost Factory tens of thousands a month. The Haçienda, sponsored by Factory Records, was largely responsible for the Manchester house and rave scene, and the subculture it created was noted by the GM Chief Constable at the time as being responsible for reducing football hooliganism. That’s the power of the Manchester music scene alright.

Factory Records was an integral part of the Manchester music scene, but its cultural impact was worldwide. It was home to Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays and more. The label was a force for cultural regeneration despite bleeding money. One of its founders, Wilson, said ‘We made history, not money.’ and that they certainly did. In fact, if you want to know more about Factory Records, its cultural impact, and the men and women who made it successful, you can catch Manchester Science and Industry Museum’s Factory Records exhibition . Just make sure you use hearing protection.

Don’t be fooled though, Manchester’s incredible music is far from in the past. We gave you The Stone Roses, Oasis and The Smiths. More recently Blossoms and The Courteeners have been flying the flag for Manchester’s music scene. God bless the band. Manchester’s Best Gig Venues

Before we dig into this, let’s be honest, all of Manchester’s gig venues are incredible. Each one gives a little something different to the Manchester music scene, with their own individual vibes. It’s basically impossible to choose. Don’t believe us? All you have to do is take a trip down memory lane with everyone’s favourite Manchester gig memories to prove it.

In the Manchester City Centre your live music options include Albert Hall and The Ritz. The former being an abandoned chapel-turned-music-venue, the stunning architecture, stained glass windows, and old pipe organ provides a spectacular backdrop for an intimate gig. The Ritz is known for attracting Mancunian partygoers. The Manchester music venue has seen many Manchester music scene legends like The Smiths and Happy Mondays and its stage continues to host top acts today.

The Northern Quarter is known for being a music hub within Manchester’s City Centre. There you’ll find Night & Day cafe , a grassroots music venue with over 30 years of history. The iconic neon sign welcomes Manchester’s gig lovers inside the boisterous music venue.

The Warehouse Project hosts a three-month programme of warehouse parties featuring international DJ’s and live performers. It’s a staple in the house and techno music scene in Manchester. Just make sure you wear hard shoes, this has been a warning.

If you’re looking for bigger gig venues in Manchester to get you buzzing then Victoria Warehouse or Manchester Arena will definitely give you that feeling. They both have a fast moving programme of some of the music industry’s biggest names from Blossoms to Megan Thee Stallion.

Historic Old School Manchester Music Scene

Each year on 29th August Manchester’s music scene ramps up to celebrate Record Store Day . Since Manchester is home to some of the greatest singers, bands and writers of all time, of course this day is huge. People travel from all over to get their hands on special release vinyl made just for this occasion.

Get yourself to the Northern Quarter and you’ll be close to some of the best record stores in Manchester and between them they have all the records you need from the music scene. Oxfam Emporium holds an impressive second-hand collection offering weird and wonderful LPs and singles you never knew you needed and all dirt cheap.

Piccadilly Records is Manchester’s largest and longest running independent record shop, meaning you’ll really be getting a taste of the city’s music scene because this one’s a staple. With forty years’ experience they offer an extensive range of records and if you can’t find what you want, the lovely staff will help you with their incredible knowledge.

Another NQ classic is Vinyl Revival which has a collection of local Manchester bands going back to the 60’s. You can also browse the impressive collection of t-shirts, posters and CD’s from the city’s musical heritage. Don’t worry though if Manchester bands aren’t your thing (firstly, re-evaluate that) you can also browse their great selection of punk, reggae, soul, hip hop and more.

Outside of the city centre there’s Kingbee Records in Chorlton, one of the last remaining independent record shops in the North West of England. Collectors and dealers from all around the world go to Kingbee and their stock is constantly rotating so it really will be different each time you visit.

Taconic Music Festival

Kicking of this year’s festival season is the 8th Annual Taconic Music Festival. This year’s festival brings together internationally acclaimed musicians and chamber music intensive students from across the country, along with the Taconic’s resident ensemble, Taconic Chamber Players.  They will be offering a broad repertoire of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary works, including pop, rock, and jazz arrangements. This summer will be full of wonderful chamber music, plus a full-orchestra Pops concert!

Taconic Music provides Southern Vermont communities with year-round concerts, lessons, and educational programs built upon the rich traditions of classical music. Dorset Theatre Festival

In its 46th year, the Dorset Theatre Festival presents its professional Main Stage season at the historic Dorset Playhouse, highlighting both new plays and classic works. Enlightening, entertaining, and inspiring audiences since 1977, the festivals’ annual celebration of great plays runs from mid-June through early September and features top theatre-makers from around the country.

This year’s Main Stage line-up includes:

The Beauty Queen of Leenane: from June 21 – July 6, Native Gardens from July 12 – 21, Sidekicked from Aug 2 –17, and True Art from Aug 23 – Sept 7.

In addition to Main Stage productions of new plays, the festival’s new play development programs showcase works-in-progress and provide the Southern Vermont region an opportunity to play a key role in the evolution of new plays in consideration for future productions at the festival and beyond.

Recent new play development programs have featured plays written by Kate Cortesi, Melissa Ross, Frank Harts, Sofia Alvarez, Matthew Paul Olmos, and Sarah T. Schwab, as well as actors including Alfre Woodard, Treat Williams, Estelle Parsons, Karen Allen, Ray Anthony Thomas, and Danny DeVito. The PIPELINE SERIES features new works and projects in process through three one-night-only presentations each year.

Manchester Music Festival

The Manchester Musci Festival (MMF) is celebrating its Golden Anniversary with a curated season of more than 30 events, including performances, masterclasses, open rehearsals, talks, and outreach programs. Under the leadership of their Artistic Director, Philip Setzer, founder and violinist of the Emerson String Quartet, Season 50 celebrates “The Romantic Journey,” a theme that cuts to the heart of how art reflects our humanity.

Beginning July 11 through August 8, you won’t want to miss any one of their Main Stage Concerts held in Southern Vermont Arts Center’s Arkell Pavilion or one of the Young Artists Concerts featuring the next generation of great chamber musicians.  Join them for MMF Thursday Nights, MMF Young Artists Program, MMF Special Events, MMF Discovery Programs, and the MMF Family Programs.

Weston Theater Company

The Weston Playhouse, renowned for its commitment to producing high-quality theatrical performances, is set to offer an exciting and diverse lineup for its 2024 season. Dead of Summer Music Festival

Join us for the 5th  Dead of Summer Music Festival (DOSM) presented by Whirlygig Music. Happening July 12-14, 2024, the event will return to Hunter Park. Nestled on 25 acres in the Green Mountains in Manchester, VT, festival goers will experience 3 days of Live Music on 2 stages, over 25 vendors, including food trucks, clothing, art, jewelry, and crafts. Also offering 2 days of yoga, a kids’ set, tie dying, and an 18-hole disc golf course on-site , makes this  a family/kid-friendly festival.

Vermont Summer Festival

This six-week USEF National/4*-Rated offers an all-inclusive horse show just a 10-minute drive from Manchester Town Center. Beginning July 3 through August 11, events at the festival include a variety of show jumping classes, from beginner levels to $30,000 Grand Prix competitions. The Grand Prix events, held on weekends, are particularly popular, featuring challenging courses designed to test the skill and agility of both horse and rider. These events are not only competitive but also family-friendly, offering a thrilling experience for spectators of all ages.

Founded in 1994, the Vermont Summer Festival has grown into one of the most prestigious equestrian events in the Northeast United States. In mid-August (Aug 15 -18) the Green Mountain Bluegrass and Roots Festival (GMBRF) returns for its 5 th year offering another family-friendly festival with live music and more.
