असम के 2 बड़े जिलों को असम से अलग करने के बाद जनवरी 1972 ई. को मेघालय राज्य का गठन किया गया था। 16 अक्टूबर 1950 ई. को जब बंगाल का विभाजन लॉर्ड कर्जन के द्वारा किया गया तो मेघालय को असम का हिस्सा बनाया दिया गया। लेकिन बाद में फिर मेघालय को असम से अलग कर दिया गया था।

नोंगक्रेम डांस फेस्टिवल (Nongkrem Dance Festival) –

इस फेस्टिवल के जरिए मेघालय की खासी जनजाति के लोग अपने इष्ट देवता को धन्यवाद करते हैं। यह Festival हर साल नवंबर को मेघालय की राजधानी शिलांग में मनाया जाता है।

शाद सुक मिनसिम (Shad Suk Mynsiem) –

यह त्यौहार भी मेघालय में इष्ट देवता को धन्यवाद देने के लिए मनाया जाता है। अच्छी फसल होने के बाद यहां के लोग अपने इष्ट देवता को धन्यवाद देते हैं। 

सेंग कूट नेम (Seng Kut Snem) –

मेघालय के युवाओं द्वारा अपने समुदाय की रक्षा के लिए उठाए गए महत्वपूर्ण कदम की याद में सेंग कूट नेम त्यौहार मनाया जाता है। यह त्यौहार हर साल 23 नवंबर को सेलिब्रेट किया जाता है।

मेघालय का रहन सहन ( Lifestyle of Meghalaya in Hindi) –

मेघालय के लोग काफी सीधा सादा जीवन जीते हैं। यहां के लोग शांतिप्रिय और प्रकृति प्रेमी हैं। मेघालय में अंग्रेजी, गारो और काशी भाषा बोली जाती है। आपको जानकर हैरानी होगी कि मेघालय में वंश महिलाओं के साथ चलता है। घर की सबसे छोटी बेटी को ही परिवार की संपत्ति मिलती है और माता-पिता की देखभाल भी वही करती है।

इसके इलावा महिलाएं ब्लाउज पहनती हैं। चेक वाले कपड़े का इस्तेमाल महिलाएं खेत में काम करने के दौरान करती हैं, जिसे किरशह कहा जाता है। मेघालय के पुरुष लुंगी पहनते हैं। किसी उत्सव या फंक्शन में पुरुष पारंपारिक कपड़े पहनते हैं। खासी आदमी पगड़ी, जैकेट और धोती पहनते हैं।

मेघालय के चेरापूंजी से मव्स्मै गुफा लगभग 7 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर है। यह गुफा एकदम भूल भुलैया की तरह लगती है। इस गुफा की लंबाई लगभग 150 किलोमीटर हैl यदि आप मेघालय टूर पर जाते हैं, तो इस गुफा में घूमने के लिए जरूर जाएं।

दावकी झील (Dawki Lake) –

बल्पक्रम राष्ट्रीय उद्यान (Balphakram National Park) –

बल्पक्रम राष्ट्रीय उद्यान गारो हिल्स के दक्षिण में स्थित है। यह उद्यान गुफा के कारण काफी ज्यादा प्रसिद्ध है। यह समुद्र तल से लगभग 3000 फीट की ऊंचाई पर बसा है। इस नेशनल पार्क में आपको एक से बढ़कर एक जीव और पशु-पक्षी देखने को मिलेंगे।

नोहकलिकाई जलप्रपात (Nohkalikai Falls) –

मेघालय का यह जलप्रपात दिखने में काफी शानदार लगता है। यह जलप्रपात समुद्र तल से लगभग 332 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित है। यहां का हरा भरा दृश्य सच में मन मोह लेता है। आप कभी भी मेघालय जाएं, तो यहां पर घूमना ना भूलें।

परंतु यह चट्टान 1987 में भूकंप के कारण नष्ट हो गई थी। एलीफेंट फॉल के आस पास बेहद सुंदर जलप्रापात, पेड़ पौधे, और सुंदर नजारे मौजूद है जो कि काफी ज्यादा मनमोहक प्रतीत होते हैं।

तुरा शहर पश्चिमी गारो हिल्स जिले में स्थित एक पहाड़ी शहर है। इस जगह का मुख्य आकर्षण नोकेरेक नेशनल पार्क है। तुरा शहर एक घाटी है, जो तुरा हिल्स की तलहटी में स्थित है। इस जगह पर घूमने लायक बहुत से प्रस्तुति झरने मौजूद है।

इस गुफा में चमकती हुई रौशनी और अनगिनत पत्थर भी देखने को मिलते हैं। इस गुफा की लंबाई करीब 150 किलोमीटर है। और यह गुफा चेरापूंजी के केंद्र से लगभग 6 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है।

मावलिननांग गांव

मावलिननांग गांव मेघालय में मौजूद बेहद ही सुंदर और साफ गांव हैं। यह गांव इतना ज्यादा सुंदर है कि यह पर्यटकों के लिए एक आकर्षण का केंद्र बना हुआ है। मेघालय राज्य में स्थित इस गांव को ‘गॉड्स ओन गार्डन’ के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

साल 2003 में इस गांव को एशिया के सबसे साफ गांव का दर्जा दिया गया, इसी कारण से मावलिननांग गांव को ‘क्लीनस्ट विलेज इन इंडिया’ के रूप में भी जाना जाता है।

पूर्वोत्तर प्रान्त में सबसे बड़ा और पारंपरिक बाज़ार जहाँ आपको मेघालय का भव्य इतिहास देखने को मिलता है। अलग अलग गांवो से आये लोग यहाँ बाज़ार लगाते हैं और यह मेघालय का मुख्य आकर्षण है। इस जगह आपको जाना चहिये।

• गारो पर्वत – Garo Hills

यह पर्वत बहुत खूबसूरत है। इसके आसपास खूब घना जंगल है और आप यहाँ ट्रेकिंग का मजा ले सकते हैं। शांत और सुकून क्षेत्र जहाँ आप प्रकृति को बहुत करीब से देख सकते हैं।

• मावफ्लांग सेक्रेड जंगल – Mawphlang Sacred Forest

यह जगह शिलोंग से 45 किलोमीटर दूर खासी पर्वत में मौजूद है। यहाँ पर मावफ्लांग जनजाति के लोग रहते हैं। प्रकृति का अनुपम सौन्दर्य समेटे यह जगह अपने आप में एक हेरिटेज है। यहाँ पर एक वृक्ष वाटिका है जो बहुत खूबसूरत है।

• नॉहकलिकई फॉल – Nohkalikai Falls

चेरापूंजी से लगभग सात किलोमीटर दूर स्थित यह वाटरफॉल बहुत ही सुंदर हैं जहाँ भारत भर से लोग घूमने जाते हैं। इसके पीछे की कहानी रोचक है।

कहते है की इस जगह लिकई नाम की एक महिला थी जिसने पहले पति के मृत्यु के बाद दूसरी शादी कर ली और उसकी एक बेटी थी जिससे वो बहुत प्यार करती थी। दूसरे पति को ये बात पसंद नहीं थी तो उसने बेटी की मारकर पका दिया और जब लिकई घर आई तो उसे बेटी की ऊँगली दिखी।

इसके बाद मामला खुला और लिकई ने इसी वॉटरफॉल में जाकर छलांग लगा दी जिसके बाद इसका नाम नॉहकलिकई पड़ गया। आपको यहाँ जरूर जाना चहिये।

• रूट ब्रिज – Root Bridge

चेरापूंजी के पास एक जगह है मावनीलोंग जहाँ पर आपको पेड़ों और उसकी टहनियों से बने अद्भुत ब्रिज दिखाई देंगे। यहाँ खासी जनजाति के लोग रहते हैं और उन्होंने इन्हें बना रखा है। यह बहुत आकर्षक है और आपको लगता है जैसे आप सौ साल पीछे आ गए हैं। हजारो लोग इन्हें देखने जाते हैं।

• मावस्माई की गुफाएं – Mawsmai Caves

चेरापूंजी से ही थोड़ी दूर यह जगह मौजूद हैं जहाँ बहुत व्यवस्थित तरीके से गुफाएं मौजूद हैं। इन जगहों में घूमना चुनौतीपूर्ण हैं लेकिन बहुत रोमांचक भी। आपको एक अलग ही अनुभव यहाँ मिलेगा।

• एलिफेंटा फॉल – Elephant Falls

शिलोंग शहर से लगभग 12 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर यह मौजूद है। पहले इसका नाम शैद लई पंतेग खोशी हुआ करता था लेकिन बाद में अंग्रेजो ने इसका नाम बदल दिया। ऊपर से गिरता पानी और चारो ओर वादियों की महक आपको बहुत आकर्षक लगेगी। इस जगह जरूर जाना चाहिए।

• स्वीट फॉल – Sweet Fall

यह शिलोंग में ही मौजूद है जो की बहुत आकर्षक है। लेकिन इसे हांटेड भी कहा जाता है क्योकि यहाँ आत्महत्या की घटनाएँ बहुत अधिक होती है। यह बहुत खूबसूरत दृश्यों से घिरा हुआ है और अपने आप में अद्भुत है।

• मोसमाई झरना – Mossman Waterfall Meghalaya

प्रकृति का अनुपम सौन्दर्य और उसके द्वारा की गई अद्भुत रचना देखने के लिए आपको इस झरने में जरूर जाना चहिये। इसके पास एक गुफा भी है जहाँ पर पानी आता है लेकिन कहा से ये नहीं पता चलता है। यह जगह चेरापूंजी के पास मोसमाई गाँव में मौजूद है।

• मलंग- Malang

Meghalaya Tourism / मेघालय भारत के उत्तर पूर्व में स्थित एक राज्य है। यहाँ की राजधानी खूबसूरत शहर शिलांग (Shillong) है। मेघालय में बहुत से ऐसे पर्यटन स्‍थल हैं, जहां पर प्रकृति अपने भव्‍य रूप में उपस्थित है। यहां देश के कुछ सबसे बड़े वन हैं। इसलिए, आज देश में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण इकोटोरिज़्म सर्किटों में से एक है। मेघालय उप-उष्णकटिबंधीय वन में कई प्रकार के वनस्पतिया और जीव पाए जाते है। यह ऊंचे-ऊंचे चीड़ के पेड़ों और बादलों का एक अंतहीन सिलसिला है। इसी वजह से इस राज्य का नाम “मेघालय” पड़ा है यानी मेघों (बादलों) का डेरा।

मेघालय के प्राकृतिक दृश्यों में तीन पहाड़ियों- खासी, जैंतिया और गारो का प्रभुत्व है। 1972 में मेघालय असम से अलग हुआ था। यहां मूल रूप से खासी, जयंतिया और गारो जनजाति के लोग रहते हैं। यह राज्य फल और सुपारी के उत्पादन के लिए काफी प्रसिद्ध है। यहां के लोगों को सुपारी चबाते देखना एक आम नजारा है। मेघालय उत्तर में असम और दक्षिण में बांग्लादेश से घिरा हुआ है। राज्य के करीब एक तिहाई हिस्से पर जंगल है। मेघालय के जंगल स्तनपाई, पक्षी और पौधों की जैव विविधता के लिए जाने जाते हैं।

मेघालय, पर्वतारोहण, रॉक क्लाइम्बिंग, ट्रेकिंग और हाइकिंग, वाटर स्पोर्ट्स आदि के रूप में कई साहसिक पर्यटन अवसर प्रदान करता है। हिरण और भालू उमियाम झील के पास एक जल क्रीड़ा परिसर है, जिसमे रोबोबोट्स, पैडलबोट्स, सेलिंग नौकाओं, क्रूज-बोट्स, वॉटर स्कूटर और स्पीडबोट्स भी है।

देखा जाए तो मेघालय घूमना वास्तव में संस्कृति, प्रकृति, लोग और भाषा के बीच से होकर गुजरना है। मंत्रमुग्ध कर देने वाले प्राकृतिक नजारों के कारण लोग मिजोरम को भी बेहद खूबसूरत जगह मानते हैं। मिजोरम के आकर्षणों में मुरलेन नेशनल पार्क और डम्पा टाइगर रिजर्व प्रमुख है। इसके अलावा यहां के झील और पालक दिल, ताम दिल और वनतावंग जलप्रपात भी बड़ी संख्या में लोगों को अपनी ओर खींचता है।

भारत के उत्तर-पूर्व में सात राज्य हैं। इसे ‘सात बहनों’ या ‘सेवन सिस्टर्स’ के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। मेघालय इन्हीं सात बहनों में से एक है। यहां ढेरों नदियां हैं, जिनमें से ज्यादातर बरसाती है। गारो पहाड़ी क्षेत्र में दारिंग, सांदा, बांद्रा, भोगाई, दारेंग, सिमसांग, निताई और भुपाई नदी प्रमुख है। पठार के मध्य और पूर्वी हिस्से में उमखरी, दिगारू, उमियाम, किनचियांग, मावपा, बारापानी, मिनगोत और मिंतदु नदी बहती है। दक्षिणी खासी पहाड़ी क्षेत्र में ये नदिया बेहद गहरी तंग घाटियों से होकर गुजरती है और कई जलप्रपात का निर्माण करती है।

इस राज्य की सबसे ऊंची चोटी शिलांग 589.50 मीटर ऊंची है। दूसरे नंबर की सबसे ऊंची चोटी नोकोक है, जो गारो हिल्स में है गारो हिल्स राज्य के सबसे पश्चिमी में, मध्य में खासी तथा पूर्व में जयंतियां की पहाड़ियां है। वनों की दृष्टि से यह राज्य काफी समृद्द है, यहां पर 15,760 हेक्टेयर क्षेत्र में वन है जो कुल भौगोलिक क्षेत्र का 703 प्रतिशत वन है। यहां अत्यन्तं दुलर्भ वन्य जीवन बिनतुरोग भी मिलता है।

1). शिलांग – (shillong tourist place in hindi).

शिलांग एक छोटा-सा शहर है जिसे पैदल घूमकर देखा जा सकता है। अपनी सुविधा के अनुसार सिटी बस या दिनभर के लिए ऑटो या टैक्सी किराए पर लेकर भी घूमा जा सकता है। शिलांग को प्राय: पूर्व का स्कॉटलैंड कहा जाता है। यहां की वास्तुकला और खान-पान में भी ब्रिटिश झलक नजर आती है। यह शहर में प्राकृतिक सौंदर्य उत्यन्त शोभायमान होता है। शिलांग पीक, लेडी हैदरी पार्क, कैलांग रॉक, वार्डस झील, मीठा झरना, हाथी झरना यहां के प्रमुख पर्यटक स्थल हैं।

2). चेरापूंजी

चेरापुंजी भारत के उत्तर-पूर्वी राज्य मेघालय का एक शहर है। यह शिलांग से 60 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित है। यह स्थान दुनिया भर में मशहूर है। हाल ही में इसका नाम चेरापूंजी से बदलकर सोहरा रख दिया गया है। वास्तव में स्थानीय लोग इसे सोहरा नाम से ही जानते हैं। यह स्थान दुनियाभर में सर्वाधिक बारिश के लिए जाना जाता है। इसके नजदीक ही नोहकालीकाई झरना है, जिसे पर्यटक जरूर देखने जाते हैं। यहां कई गुफा भी हैं, जिनमें से कुछ कई किलोमीटर लम्बी हैं। चेरापूंजी बांगलादेश सीमा से काफी करीब है, इसलिए यहां से बांगलादेश को भी देखा जा सकता है।

3). सीजू गुफा

मेघालय की सीजू गुफा, भारत की पहली चूना पत्थर वाली प्राकृतिक गुफ़ा है. यह गुफा 2 पहाड़ियों के शिखर को एक रस्सी और तार के ब्रिज के माध्यम से जोड़ती है। इस पुल की अस्थिरता आपको इतना डराएगी की आपको लगेगा की आप पुल से नीचे गिर जाएंगे।

4). मोसमाई झरना

इस झरने से 2 हजार फीट की ऊंचाई से गिरता हुआ जल देखकर मन सिहर उठता है। इतना ही नहीं, करीब 1.5 किमी दूरी पर मोसमाई गुफा भी बहुत ज्यादा सुंदर है। यह गुफाएं मानव निर्मित नहीं है। या भी इनकी एक विशेषता है। गुफा में जाल रिसता रहता है। इन गुफाओं के अंदर घने अंधकार का साम्राज्य स्थापित है।

यह गुफा नाहसिंहथियांग झरनों के पास हैं। मोसमाई गुफा जाने का रास्ता चेरापूंजी के पास स्थित मोसमाई गांव से है। गुफा मॉस्मई गांव के बेहद करीब है। गुफा का प्रवेश द्वार खड़ी चढ़ाई वाला और बेहद संकरा है।

यह शिलांग से 24 किमी. की दूरी पर स्थित है। यह एशिया के सबसे साफ गांव हैं, यहां का प्राकृतिक दृश्य अत्यधिक मनमोहक है। प्रकृति के अनुपम दृश्यों से परिपूर्ण इस स्थान पर पर्यटकों को स्वर्ग की अनुभूति होती है। यह स्थान पर्यटकों को आकर्षण का मुख्य केंद्र है।

6). मावसिनराम

मावसिनराम गुफा अपनी आप में खास है। यही विशिष्टता इसकी पहचान है। मावसिनराम की गुफा के चलते मेघालय का यह गांव भारत के साथ साथ दुनियाभर में लोकप्रिय है। मेघालय के खूबसूरत नजारों में से एक है मावसिनराम, जो शिलांग से 56 किमी की दूरी पर स्थित है। इसकी गुफा मावसिनराम गांव से करीब एक किमी उत्तर में है। यह गुफा स्टलैग्माइट यानी चूने के पत्थरों से बनी बड़ी बड़ी चोटियों के लिए मशहूर है। इनकी उंचाई 25.30 फीट तक है। ये चोटियां शिवलिंग की तरह दिखती है। इस गुफा का दूसरा नाम मावियमबुइन भी है।

7). क्रेम डैम गुफा

क्रेम डैम गुफा मेघालय का ऐसा सुरम्य स्थान है, जहां प्रकृति अपने भव्य स्वरूप में दर्शन देती है। क्रेम डैम संभवतः पूरे भारतीय महाद्वीप की सबसे बड़ी गुफा होगी, जो बलुआ पत्थरों से बनी है। यह अपने विशाल आकार और बेमिसाल खूबसूरती की वजह से बड़ी संख्या में पर्यटकों को अपनी ओर खींचती है। क्रेम डैम की लंबाई लगभग 1297 मीटर है। ऐसा पत्थर जो रेत के बारीक कणों से मिलकर बना हो, बलुआ पत्थर कहलाता है। यह तलछटी चट्टान भी कहलाता है। इसमें अधिकतर हिस्सा स्फटिक या धरती की सतह पर पाए जाने वाले तत्वों की ही होती है।

8). क्रेम लैशिंग

क्रेम लैशिंग, मेघालय की उन हजार खूबसूरत गुफाओं में से एक है, जो उसके दिल में पालने की तरह झूलती हैं। क्रेम लैशिंग राज्य के एक और पर्यटन स्थल जोवाई से 37 किमी. की दूरी पर है। बेहद शांत जगह है। यदि आपके दिल में गुफाओं के लिए भी जगह है तो मेघालय आपकी पहली पसंद साबित हो सकता है, जो आपको हर पल रोमांचित कर सकता है। मेघालय यूं तो गुफाओं के लिए ही मशहूर है। लेकिन क्रेम लैशिंग की विशेषता इसका विशालकाय होना है, जो इसे दूसरों से अलग करता है। 50 मीटर की चौड़ाई में फैली इस गुफा की ऊंचाई 40 मीटर है। यही आंकड़े मेघालय आने वाले हर पर्यटक को अपनी ओर खिंचते हैं।

9). नारतियांग

जयंतिया हिल्स जिला मेघालय टूरिज्म का बड़ा केंद्र है, जहां एक से एक अद्भुत गुफाएं कंदराएं और एडवेंचरस स्पोर्ट्स के स्थान हैं। यह छुट्टी मनाने के लिए आसपास के लोगों की पहली पसंद है। हालांकि, एडवेंचर करने वालों को यहां सावधानी रखने की जरूरत भी होती है। नारतियांग, ऐसी जगह है जो पूरे मेघालय के दिल में बसता है। यह सिर्फ पर्यटन स्थल के तौर पर नहीं बल्कि ऐतिहासिक और पुरातात्विक लिहाज से भी महत्वपूर्ण है।

10). नोकरेक चोटी

नोकरेक गारो हिल्स पर तूरा क्षेत्र की सबसे ऊंची चोटी है। यह पश्चिम गारो हिल्स जिले में आती है। तूरा रेंज इस पहाड़ की प्रमुख आकर्षणों में से एक है। इसकी लंबाई 50 किलोमीटर के करीब है। यह पूर्व से पश्चिम दिशा में सीजू से तूरा तक फैला हुआ है। तूरा की पहाड़िया अभी नोकरेक नेशनल पार्क के प्रबंधन के तहत आती हैं। नोकरेक की चोटी और इसका बेस तूरा के दक्षिण पूर्व में 13 किलोमीटर क्षेत्र में पसरा हुआ है।

11). एलिफेण्ट फॉल्स

एलिफण्ट फॉल्स बहुत ही बडा झरना है जिसकी आवाज बहुत दूर से सुनी जा सकती है। पहाडी से बहुत नीचे उतरकर यह मनोरम दृष्य देखा जा सकता है। फोटोग्राफी के लिये यह सर्वश्रेष्ठ झरना कहा जा सकता है क्योंकि इसमे झरने के पास जाया जा सकता है।

कैसे जाये –

मेघालय की जलवायु उपोष्ण और आद्र है। इस क्षेत्र में शायद ही कभी तापमान 28 डिसे से ऊपर जाता होगा। खासी हिल्स में स्थित चेरापूंजी विश्व का सर्वाधिक वर्षा वाला स्थान है। मेघालय घूमने का सबसे अच्छा समय मार्च से जुलाई के बीच का रहता है।

मेघालय में कोई विमानतल नहीं है। सबसे निकट का विमानतल है गुवाहाटी, जो मेघालय की राजधानी शिलॉन्ग से 128 किमी दूर है। हेलिकॉप्टर सेवा के जरिए गुवाहाटी से शिलॉन्ग (30 मिनट) और तुरा (60 मिनट) पहुंचा जा सकता है। राज्य में सड़क नेटवर्क काफी अच्छा है। पूरे राज्य में सड़कों का जाल बिछा हुआ है। राष्ट्रीय राजमार्ग -40 हर मौसम में इस्तेमाल होता है, जो राज्य से होकर गुजरता है। शिलांग से गुवाहाटी को जोड़ने वाली सड़क देश के अन्य बड़े शहरों को भी जोड़ती है। मेघालय में कोई भी रेल सेवा नहीं है। सबसे पास का रेलवे स्टेशन है गुवाहाटी।

Are you looking for the best tourist places in Meghalaya for an off the beaten path adventure?

Known as the abode of the clouds , Meghalaya consistently records some of the highest rainfall in the world. Along with the rains comes lush green landscape, plenty of waterfalls, large caves, and other natural wonders to explore.

19 Best Meghalaya Tourist Places & Landmarks

My partner is from this northeastern state and has taken me to many of these highlights so I can personally vouch for the magnificence of Meghalaya. My personal favorite thing to do was taking a rowboat ride in the clear waters of Shnongpdeng (even with the rough rocky drive down from Shillong).

Please note that some of these places are new to tourism so it’s important to be mindful and take all trash with you for proper disposal. Keep these beautiful places clean and green for locals and future visitors.

1. Shnongpdeng & the Umngot River

The Umngot River is off the beaten path but well worth the journey to see it. The village of Shnongpdeng is the best place to experience the river from. Dawki is the original place that made this river famous, but it’s more crowded so I highly recommend driving just a bit further to the peaceful village of Shnongpdeng.

The river is known for being crystal clear so you can each see through to the rocky bottom. There is a bridge you can cross to view it from above. You can also take a kayak out on your own or you can go in a rowboat that a guide rows and navigates. I did both to enjoy the river to its fullest after the long journey there.

Kayaking is nice to go at your own pace and sit out in the river to enjoy the views and get pictures, but you can’t go as far up the river on your own. The guides in the rowboats can take you further up stream to some cool rapids. The round trip is just under an hour and you can fit up to four people in the boat.

The clearness of the water depends on the weather so make sure to plan your visit outside of the rainy season. November to March are the months you are most likely to get a clear view of the river bottom .

The road from Shillong is 90 kilometers but it is unpaved in some parts and other parts are falling apart. As is unfortunately not uncommon in Meghalaya, it is in desperate need of roadwork and maintenance so plan for a slow drive as it takes time to navigate around the potholes. 

2. Double Decker Living Root Bridge 

The living root bridges are one of the most famous places to visit in Meghalaya . These bridges are hundreds of years old and made by the Khasi people by finessing tree roots into the structure of a bridge. To get to them, you’ll need to hike down to the village of Nongriat .

Tryna Village is the closest place you can drive to Nongriat and the starting point for the hike. You can pay a small parking fee to park in one of the small lots or along the road in Tryna. Or you can have a cab driver from Cherapunjee drop you off there. Just be aware that you’ll need to pre-arrange for that driver to come back at the end of the day to get you. Tryna is a small village with no public transport options.

The single decker living root bridge is about an hour hike down. From there you can continue onto the double decker living root bridge , which is another couple hours by foot. Be aware that being physically fit is necessary for this journey. Getting to the double decker root bridge is the easy part of the hike. For each stair you take down, remember you’ll need to walk back up it! 

As you approach the entrance to the hike there are locals offering walking sticks to rent. Have some rupees with you as you’ll definitely want to get a walking stick to assist you on the way back up.

Where to Stay Nearby

📍 Jiva Resort – a 3 star resort with sweeping views of the surrounding hills and a restaurant with delicious Indian food. This is the perfect place to stay for exploring Cherapunjee and nearby tourist places.

3. Rainbow Falls

If you are an advanced hiker, you can continue another hour past the Double Decker Living Root Bridge to Rainbow Falls . It’s important to start your hike early in the day to get to the falls before noon if you want the best chances of seeing a rainbow here.

If you want to see the falls in addition to the living root bridges and you don’t have amazing endurance, you can consider staying in the village of Nongriat for one night to break the hike down and back up into two days. There are some basic homestays in the village for the more adventurous. 

4. Mawlynnong

Mawlynnong is credited as the cleanest village in Asia . It has become a very popular destination in Meghalaya amongst tourists due to this honor and you’ll have to pay a fee to enter and walk around. There is a living root bridge and a balancing rock to see on your way through the village.

Pro traveler tip: Pair it with a visit to Shnongpdeng since they are close to each other. Or, for a daytrip from Shillong, you can take a private guided tour .

📍 Vivanta Meghalaya, Shillong – a luxury option by Taj. This hotel is centrally located in Shillong and a great base for exploring the city and the surrounding tourist attractions.

📍 Centre Point, Shillong – a solid 3 star option that is also centrally located but with a lower price point.

5. Cherapunjee

Cherapunjee (also known as Sohra and Cherapunji) is worth a few days all on its own. It’s one of the wettest places on earth and all that rainfall creates beautiful lush green landscape and majestic waterfalls. If you have time for one place in Meghalaya I would make it a trip here. There’s a plethora of spectacular sights and things to do in Cherapunjee.

6. Shillong

This busy city is the capital of Meghalaya and a good base for exploring more of the state. It’s sometimes referred to as the Scotland of the East because the landscape reminded the British of Scotland. Read more about what to see and do in Shillong.

7. Laitlum Canyon

A visit to Laitlum Canyon provides dramatic views of a gorgeous green canyon. I recommend spending a couple hours here. You can walk along the rim for a while and then set up a picnic on a blanket to eat in the fields and enjoy the views. It’s near Shillong so can easily be visited on your stay there.

8. Mawphlang Sacred Forest

A short drive from Shillong, the Sacred Forest is located in the village of Mawphlang in the East Khasi Hills .

You can pay a small fee to have a guide walk you a short way into the forest and explain what the forest means to the local Khasi community (one of the three main tribes that make up Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage). It won’t take more than an hour and is an easy walk, making this fun for all ages.

Jowai , located in the West Jaintia Hills (66 kms from Shillong) is the headquarters of the Jainta Hills district . It is a more “off the beaten path” destination that is up and coming for travelers in Meghalaya.

Jowai is surrounded by lush green valleys, meandering rivers, and serene lakes, making it a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

📍 Odyssey Stays Jowai – this budget accommodation has good reviews and is a good location for the places further away from Shillong that require staying overnight near Jowai to enjoy.

10. Balpakram National Park

Situated in western Meghalaya near the Bangladesh border, this national park is known for the Goncho Dare gorge , a steep forest filled canyon. Balpakram means “land of perpetual wind” and the park is sacred to the local Garo tribe . It’s considered an abode of spirits, where souls temporarily pass through on their journey to the afterlife.

It’s a multi-day trip to visit this park and you’ll need to hire a driver with a 4×4 vehicle from Tura (170 kms from the park) to arrange it.

11. Wari Chora

Wari Chora is a small village in the Garo Hills , which are home to the nature-loving Garo tribe. It’s more than 360 kms from Shillong and can take more than 9 hours to drive there. Although gaining in popularity, this is a more remote destination in Meghalaya so plan accordingly.

The highlight of this special place is being able to kayak through a narrow canyon . You will need a guide to do this as it requires one hour of off road driving just to get to the start of a trail where it will take another hour to hike down to the river bed to start your kayaking journey.

This hidden gem is new to tourists so local homestays and campsites are the best places to stay nearby. If traveling from Shillong, it requires an overnight trip due the time it takes to get there. The nearest major town is Baghmara and the other closest village is Dabalgre, where you can find some accommodation options.

12. Krang Suri Falls

This waterfall is just 30 km from Jowai and 90 km from Shillong. It’s only a 15 minute walk from where you park to reach the falls. Unlike a lot of other waterfalls in Meghalaya you can actually swim here (though you’ll be required to rent a life vest). You also have the option to rent a rowboat. 

You can work in a stop here on your way to Shnongpdeng from Shillong to help break up the drive.

📍 Loomkyntoor Resort – this resort offers a good location for exploring Jowai and the nearby tourist places. There aren’t a lot of options in the area so you can’t be too picky. It’s less than 30 mins drive to Krang Suri Falls.

13. Tyrshi Falls

This step-tiered waterfall can be seen amongst other sights in the area. It’s just a quick drive off the main Jowai-Shillong Road and a short walk to the falls. It’s only 8 kms from Jowai and is a popular spot amongst locals.

14. David Scott Trail

For the more adventurous tourist, the David Scott Trail is a 16 km hiking trail that was once part of a 100km British-era trade route from Assam to Bangladesh. You can trek the full 100 kms in 4-5 days or take the 16 km trail from Mawphlang to Lad Mawphlang in about 5 hours.

15. Krem Liat Prah

The word ‘krem’ in the local Khasi language translates to cave. Krem Liat Prah is the longest natural cave in India , so long that experts are still mapping it! For now, there’s 34 kms mapped. Needless to say, a guide is required for tourists to explore this cave.

📍 Odyssey Stays Jowai – this budget accommodation has good reviews and is a couple hours away from Krem Liat Prah. I recommend visiting this cave when you are based out of nearby Jowai.

16. Krem Mawmluh Cave

Exploration of the 7km of cave passages here helped to prove existence of 200-year-long drought around 4,200 years ago, which is now known as the Meghalayan Age . You’ll need a trained guide with proper caving equipment to visit this cave, which you can find in town in Cherapunjee or Shillong.

17. Nartiang Monoliths

Nartiang is a small village, about 24 km from Jowai and 60 km from Shillong. You can find a large collection of monoliths here. Each stone structure is dedicated to a person, with the standing rocks commemorating male ancestors and the flat rocks representing female ancestors.

You can take a walk through the historic archaeological site. It’s one of the top historical landmarks in Meghalaya.

18. Phe Phe Falls

These falls, named by the Jainta tribe, are also known as Phea Phea or Paradise Falls because ‘phe phe’ translates to ‘paradise.’ Unlike many waterfalls in Meghalaya, swimming is permitted in the cool blue pools at the base. Even outside of the rainy season these falls do not dry up, although the water runs a little lighter.

19. Umlawan Cave

This cave is located in Lumshnong village in West Jaintia Hills district, almost two hours drive southeast of Jowai. During monsoon season the entrance may be filled with water making swimming necessary to reach it.

Getting Around Meghalaya

Shillong is a good base for travels around Meghalaya but to get to some of the best spots you’ll need to stay overnight in smaller towns and villages. You can take tourist taxis and sometimes public buses from Shillong to get to tourist destinations outside of town.

Infrastructure for public transit is lacking so driving is the best way to see Meghalaya but roads can get small and patchy so be aware that drives to more remote areas can take up to double the time Google Maps indicates.

Renting a Car

I do not recommend renting your own car in Meghalaya if you are not familiar with driving in India. It’s important to note that the roads outside of cities can get quite difficult to navigate due to poor road conditions and incorrect information on apps such as Google Maps.

Meghalaya: Travel Guide to The Land in the Clouds

An exquisite hilly region located in the North-eastern region of India, Meghalaya lies comfortably between Bangladesh in the South and Brahmaputra valley in the North. The state is otherwise called as the “abode of clouds” and Meghalaya is geographically known as “Meghalaya Plateau”.

Shillong is the capital of the cloudy state. It is also called as “abode of gods” where pilgrims invade for worship and people come together to greet god. Mawsynram is one of the chilliest places in the state.

How to Reach

The state is accessible through Air, Road, and Railway.

Meghalaya has one civil airport, The Shillong Airport also called Umrai Airport. However, this airport at present is only connected to Kolkata and its neighbouring states of Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura.

Therefore the best way to get there is to fly to Guwahati in Assam. The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati is the closest airport and is well-connected to the international cities of Bangkok and Paro, along with Indian cities Chennai, Calcutta, Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.

However, there is no straight bus available from Guwahati Airport to Meghalaya, but one can hire a cab. The airport is roughly 120 km from Shillong.

The state is easily accessible through well-paved roads. But, it is quite essential to take precautions while driving on the roads in heavy monsoon season. Some roads may get slowed down due to water stagnation.

The nearest railway station from Meghalaya is situated in Guwahati (Assam), at a distance of 180 km. Guwahati Junction is connected to Amritsar, Jammu and Kashmir, New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bangalore. You can opt for buses or can hire a cab to reach Meghalaya from Guwahati.

Places To See

Meghalaya caves.

The state is encompassed with many natural caves. Many of the caves are made of natural limestone. The interiors are cool and one can feel like quite the explorer.

The Garo, Khasi, and Jaintia are popular tourist attractions. Krem Mawmluh, Mawsmai Cave, Krem Umshangktat, Siju-Dobkhakol are other notable caves which tourists visit.

These caves will have a nominal entry fee and sometimes come with a car or bike parking charges.

Meghalaya Waterfalls

The state is surmounted by a number of waterfalls which are gushing from the steep mountains, take a twist and reach the jungle at last. Elephant Falls, Mawsmai Falls, Spread Eagle Falls, Imilchang Dare are some of the most popular waterfalls.

Elephant falls is quite touristy and is mostly a commercial waterfall. You will find stalls selling handicrafts and other merchandise that you can take back home as a souvenir around the waterfall. But the truly awe inspiring ones are those that can be found in the hills and jungles.

Lady Hydari Park

This is an alluring garden and the best months to visit the garden are from April to October. At the time tourists can enjoy seeing the flowers blooming. There is a mini zoo next to the garden where a number of birds and animals chirp and roar.

This is a gorgeous lake created by damming the Umiam river. You can find it en route between Guwahati and Shillong. The lake is a major tourist attraction and also a spot for people to try water sports like kayaking or boating.

This pretty little town borders Bangladesh. It is most famous for its lake – beautiful, calm and emerald green in colour. You can go boating in Dawki. The biggest highlight is getting to Dawki as you will have to drive up the mountains and then down into the valley. You can see why Meghalaya is called the abode of clouds on this route. You will also find plenty of little streams and waterfalls on the way, where you can stop and refresh yourself.

Cherrapunji

Known as one of the wettest places in India, Cherrapunji is a delight for the pluviophile. The Nohkalikai Falls, the tallest waterfall in India is closest to Cherrapunji. The Mawsmai and Arwah caves are also nearby. The seven sisters waterfall and the rainbow waterfall is also a must-see. However, if there are incessant rains, the resulting mist or fog can sometimes disrupt views.

From Cherrapunji you can also go to see the famed single and double living root bridges. It is quite a trek to get to the bridges. After climbing down nearly a thousand stairs you will come to the single root bridge. You have to take a slight detour from there, walk a little more, cross a few bridges and climb up some more stairs to get to the double root bridge. It’s worth the trouble!

Travel tip: Cherrapunji is a small town with very sweet and hospitable locals. Head to some of the small, nondescript restaurants for a meal. These places have limited food (usually they have a fixed meal for the day) but it gives you a feel of eating at home.

How to Commute within the State

Driving or riding to Meghalaya (and around) is a great (and the best) option as you have views of the hills and valleys unfold before your eyes. As well as the convenience of going about at your own pace and time.  You can hire a bike or a car on rent (for self-drive) in Guwahati. You can try this rental service .

If you do not want to hire a self-drive, the next best thing to do is to negotiate with a taxi driver in Shillong to take you around for the duration of your stay. These drivers also double up as tour guides. Hiring them for a longer duration will help you negotiate a price and customise your trip as per your liking (a package deal).

State transport like buses is limited in Meghalaya and the timings are erratic, hence self-drive or cab/taxi are the most convenient options.

Where to Stay

Shillong has plenty of hotels that you can stay at. In Cherrapunji you can find some backpacker lodges. If you want to visit the root bridges you can either do a day trip and back from Cherrapunji or you can opt for a homestay there. The rooms will be limited, hence ensure that it isn’t booked full.  Or you might end up getting stranded in case it gets late. Camping is also a great option in this state.

When to Visit

The state is a suitable for lovers and the newly wedded,  due to its cool climate and serene atmosphere . The best time to visit this beautiful state is from October to April. If you are a pluviophile, then monsoon season would be apt for you as this area gets the highest rainfall in India.

Further, if you wish to visit during the Cherry Blossom festival, then plan your visit for November. The Himalayan Cherry Blossoms can be found in the wild in Khasi hills. And the Government of Meghalaya has planted them in several places. They are also protected by bamboo tree guards that add to its beauty. You needn’t go all the way to Japan when you have these pink and white petaled beauties right here in India.

Meghalaya’s language.

In Meghalaya, three languages are very familiar and these popular Meghalaya languages are Khasi, Garo, and English. There are few people who speak Nepali, Assamese, Bengali, and Bodo. Most people will happily communicate with tourists in Hindi or English.

The traditions and customs followed by Meghalaya vary to the highest extent and it differs across different communities. The supreme god is locally known as Dakgipa Rugipa worshipped by the Garos. They also believe in sin and reincarnation.

People’s Occupation in Meghalaya

People living in Meghalaya consider Agriculture as their prime occupation. Rice, Maize, Potato, Cotton, Jute, Mesta, Black pepper, Bettle leaf, Nuts, Turmeric, Ginger, Jackfruit, are the common food crops here. Besides agriculture, small, medium scale industries are coming up for better employment. Since most of the people in Meghalaya earn their living by handcrafts, resultantly it has become an integral part of the culture. These handicrafts are great to take back as gifts or souvenirs.

10 Places to Visit in Meghalaya for Nature Lovers

Meghalaya, in northeast India , used to be part of Assam . Known as the Abode of the Clouds, it's famous for being the wettest place on earth. This makes it a popular monsoon travel destination for those who love the rain. The majority of the state's population is made up of tribal people -- Khasis (the largest group), Garos, and Pnars -- who predominantly earn their living from cultivation. The state is divided into three main hills -- Khasi Hills (Central range), Garo Hills (Western range) and Jaintia Hills (Eastern range). Most tourist places are located in the Khasi Hills. Here's the pick of attractions.

Living Root Bridges

Possibly Meghalaya's most famous attraction , deep in the dense tropical forest and shrouded in cloud and rain for much of the year, are some astonishing man-made natural wonders known as living root bridges. Inventive members of the Khasi tribe have trained them to grow from the roots of ancient rubber trees, native to the northeast region. There are two places that you can see the bridges: near Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong.

In addition to having an easily accessible living root bridge nearby, scenic Mawlynnong village was named the "Cleanest Village in Asia" by a travel magazine. Also dubbed "God's Own Garden", the village is an outstanding example of community-based ecotourism. The locals have constructed a remarkable Sky View platform from bamboo atop the highest tree in the forest, nearly 80 feet up. It offers a bird's eye view of the village and panoramic view across to Bangladesh (the border is just a few kilometers away). Mawlynnong is a three hour drive south of Shillong in the East Khasi Hills. It's possible to stay there in a basic village guesthouse or house on stilts.

Dawki–Shnongpdeng

About an hour east of Mawlynnong, in the West Jaintia Hills, the border town of Dawki is worth visiting for its pristine emerald Umngot River. The absence of security makes it hard to believe that the International Radcliffe Line border between India and Bangladesh is situated there (and yes, locals from both sides do cross and intermingle). It's possible to go on a mesmerizing boat ride along the river, which is said to be one of the cleanest on earth. If driving from Mawlynnong to Dawki, do stop at magnificent Bophill Falls along the way. Shnongpdeng village, a short distance further on from Dawki, is the best place to stay.

In Meghalaya, there are waterfalls and there's Krang Suri. This small but stunning waterfall is tucked away near Jowai, about an hour northeast of Dawki and about three hours southeast of Shillong in the West Jaintia Hills. Be prepared to hike for around 20 minutes down a trail of steps to reach it. Entry tickets cost 50 rupees. It's possible to go swimming although you'll be told to wear a life-jacket. Changing rooms and toilets are provided.

Mawphlang Sacred Forest

Approximately 45 minutes southwest of Shillong in the East Khasi Hills, Mawphlang is home to a sacred plant grove of the Khasi tribe. It's full of medicinal plants. Tribe members also perform animal sacrifices and burn the bodies of their dead inside it. There's a Khasi Heritage Village next to the sacred forest, with different styles of mock tribal huts. If you're feeling energetic and want to spend a day out in nature, try the picturesque David Scott trail from Mawphlang to Lad Mawphlang. It's part of an old horse trail dating back to the British era.

Laitlum Canyon

Combine a day trip to Mawphlang Sacred Forest with Laitlum Canyon, where you'll feel like you've reached the end of the world. It's only an hour or so south of Shillong, and an hour and a half east of Mawphlang, in the East Khasi Hills. If you can tear yourself away from gazing across the open expanse of the gorge, it's possible to descend down a steep stairway to the village of Rasong. The 350 or so inhabitants of this remote village rely on a rustic cable pulley to transport food and other essential goods up and down the valley.

Meghalaya is the best destination for caving in India. There are more than 1,000 caves in the state, including the recently discovered longest sandstone cave in the world (Krem Puri in the Mawsynram region of the East Khasi Hills). The most frequently visited cave is Mawsmai, near Cherrapunji (two hours from Shillong). It's maintained as a show cave for tourists and is lit up all the way through. The Garden of Caves, near Laitmawsiang village on the way to Cherrapunji, is spectacular and has waterfalls. Arwah Cave can also be explored in the area and is known for its prehistoric fossils. Other caves are more challenging to visit and are suited to caving expeditions with appropriate caving equipment. These include Siju (a bat cave), Mawmluh (with a pool inside), Mawjymbuin (notable for its stalagmites) and Krem Dam (a long sandstone cave) near Mawsynram, and Liat Prah (the longest natural cave in India). Meghalaya Tourism has a list of caves in the state. The Meghalaya Adventurers' Association conducts week-long caving expeditions from Shillong.

Many mysterious monoliths can be found spread across Meghalaya's Khasi and Jaintia Hills, erected by the regions' tribes as a symbol of remembrance. However, the largest collection is located in the vicinity of Nartiang village in the Jaintia Hills, about two hours east of Shillong. This village used to be the summer capital of the Jaintia rulers and is a lesser-known tourist destination perfect for escaping the crowds. Some of the many monoliths there are up to 10 meters tall!

Mawryngkhang Bamboo Trek

Thrill seekers will love the new Mawryngkhang Trek, which opened in 2017. It starts out from Wahkhen village, about two hours south of Shillong in the East Khasi Hills, and will take you to the top of massive Mawryngkhang -- the legendary "King of Stones". The trail extends over a series of connected bamboo bridges built by locals and terrifyingly hugs the side of a huge sheer rock-face in part. Below is a deep gorge and river. Although the trek is quite easy and can be completed in two or three hours, definitely skip it if you're scared of heights! There aren't any accommodations in the area, so you'll have to return to Shillong or Cherrapunji the same day.

If you're a nature lover who really wants to get off the beaten track, then head to the densely forested Garo Hills in the western part of Meghalaya. This vast area is home to the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, Siju Wildlife Sanctuary, and Balpakhram National Park. It's pristine and full of biodiversity, including hundreds of species of butterflies. Tura, the second largest town in the state after Shillong, has a helpful tourist office that can organize guides and trips.

In Shillong: Don't Miss Iewduh Bara Bazar

Regarded as one of the largest traditional-style markets in northeast India, this hectic and congested market in the heart of Shillong is where local Khasi women come to sell their fresh produce and livestock. You'll get some tasty local street food there too. The market is a fascinating place to walk through, especially if you're into street photography. It's open daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. except on Sundays. (Go early in the morning if you want to avoid the crowds, otherwise brace yourself!)
