Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades is a popular starting point for many cruises, and with good reason! However, navigating transportation options to the port can feel overwhelming. This guide simplifies things, laying out all your choices to get you to your cruise ship with ease.

Whether you’re driving your own car and need parking , flying in and require an airport shuttle, or considering a hotel with parking options, we’ll cover all the bases. This way, you can compare and choose the most convenient option for your upcoming adventure.

Fort Lauderdale is located about 30 miles north of Miami on interstates 75 and 95 (I-75 and I-95) and these are the routes most drivers will use to get to the port area. Only if you are coming in from further south will you come in on the famous Highway 1 from Key West.

Driving times from nearby major cities are:

• Fort Myers: 2.25 hours (140 miles)
• Orlando: 3.5 hours (220 miles)
• Jacksonville: 5 hours (325 miles)
• Tampa: 3.75 hours (265 miles)

If you want to park at the port, check out the options here ; if you prefer to arrive the night before, check out these hotels which will let you park your car during your cruise if you stay the night.

There are two main airports you can use to get to Port Everglades. Fort Lauderdale airport caters mainly to low-cost carriers and is just a few miles from the port. If you use traditional carriers you may end up flying into Miami, 30 miles to the south.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport (Code: FLL)

Just 3 miles from Port Everglades, if you can fly into here, your transit to the cruise terminal will be quick and easy.

Miami International Airport (Code: MIA)

The biggest airport close to Fort Lauderdale is in Miami. An American Airlines hub, Miami International is located in the centre of Miami and thirty miles south of the cruise terminal.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Public transport is not really an option from Fort Lauderdale Airport. Whilst you can catch a bus from the rental car   centre , it doesn’t take you close enough to the port to be worth it.

Public transport can take you from Miami to Fort Lauderdale Airport, reducing the cost of one of the options below.

The fastest option is the RedCoach which leaves regularly and takes about 45 minutes to get from Miami airport to Fort Lauderdale airport. It costs between $21 and $41 depending on the time you need to travel. Click here  for more information.

For Fort Lauderdale Airport, a taxi will not be expensive as the port is just a few miles away. Picking up a taxi from the taxi stand at the airport is probably easiest.

For Miami Airport, we advise smaller groups of cruise passengers to use one of the cheaper options available. But if you are a larger group, prices can be competitive with other options. If you want the luxury of a private transfer, the companies below can accommodate you.

Uber  and  Lyft will cost between $13 and $19 for a transfer from Fort Lauderdale Airport to Port Everglades and between $55 and $90 for a transfer from Miami International Airport to Port Everglades. These rates are  for the standard Uber X or standard Lyft.

With the Fort Lauderdale Airport so close to the cruise terminal, a shuttle probably won’t be your best option. Super Shuttle   can sell you a return transfer for around $60, but it will actually be in a taxi!

From Miami Airport Metro Shuttle Service can get 2 – 9+ passengers to Port Everglades for between $14 and $25 each way.

Renting a car for just a few hours is our favourite way to get to the cruise terminal from the airport. Once we discovered the option and tried it, we found it to be the perfect solution. As long as you don’t mind driving, possibly on the “wrong” side of the road for you, it gives you a private transfer that leaves on your schedule and can be surprisingly competitive with other transportation options.

Given the proximity of Fort Lauderdale Airport and Port Everglades, we would only recommend hiring a car if planning to head out and see the sights, otherwise, it probably doesn’t make sense to use this option. If you do rent a car, you could pay as little as $37 for less than a day’s rental.

But, if you are flying into Miami, this option could make a lot of sense. A small car can be rented for as little as $55 for less than a day, allowing you to drive yourself to the port.

HOTEL TRANSFER

With the cruise port right in the heart of the city and Fort Lauderdale airport just minutes away, it’s worth looking at a hotel which is close to one and provides a shuttle service to the other. Check out our  Fort Lauderdale hotels  section for more information.

CRUISE COMPANY TRANSFER

Paying the cruise company to get from the airport to the ship is rarely good value, especially if more than one or two people need a transfer. But, it does make the transfer easier as you’ve booked everything through the cruise line and therefore can rely on them to get you to and/or from the airport.

We are flying into Fort Lauderdale FLL airport the night before Our MSC Seashore cruise and would really appreciate a hotel recommendation that offers a free shuttle from the airport. In addition could somebody please recommend a shuttle service that either picks up at the hotel and shuttles to the Miami cruise port or shuttles from FLL to the Miami port. Thanks

SAS Transportation (rideSAS) does pickups at various hotels around FL.  Check their website before choosing a hotel.  We have found them reliable and inexpensive.

I heartily agree.  SAS is very very awesome.  Reasonable, and reliable.  

I am going to be honest, having done the Miami - Ft Lauderdale thing many times.  There are some decent shuttle service companies with reasonable prices.  But they generally operate large vans that pick-up from more than one hotel and drop at more than one pier.  For us, the easy solution is to simply use Uber or Lyft.  For two persons the price is not outrageous (when compared to paying for two on a shuttle), there is no waiting for pick-ups, and you get taken directly to your ship without sometimes having to stop at 2 or 3 other piers.   The price for Uber is usually around $40 - $45 for the entire vehicle although that price does vary with surge pricing.  For those who have AMEX Gold or Platinum you would get $10 back...making an Uber less expensive than most shuttle services.

We actually will often book a Ft Lauderdale hotel, when cruising out of Miami, because the hotel is less expensive, and we have a favorite restaurant just off 17th street in Lauderdale.  And given the cost of transportation from MIA into the city (more expensive than FLL into Ft Lauderdale) it just makes sense.

I really like your advice. Would you mind telling me which hotel you pick if you have a favorite one. To be truthful I have never used Uber or Lyft. I’ve always been kind of nervous about it. This would be a good time to test it out!  I also like the SAS idea too. 

We stayed at Hilton Garden Inn Fort Lauderdale airport when we flew into FLL for Miami cruise.

It was fine for quick overnight before going to Miami port in the morning.

Used our Hilton points for room and the shuttle from airport was very easy to catch.

Airport shuttle is free. no one else was on the shuttle when we took it. 

Because of Covid, we arranged car service to Miami port.

he did a great job. picked us up at hotel and dropped us at MSC tents within an hour.

There are many options to get to Miami port that do not require you to take large shuttle bus, that stops at hotels.

'To use Uber and/or Lyft you do need a working Smartphone.  I mention this because some of my HAL friends do not believe in smartphones :).  I actually find Uber/Lyft better than taxis.  You know, in advance, the price, generally pay via pre-registered credit card, and there is a record.   As to hotels, we have most often stayed at the Embassy Suites just off 17th Street in Ft Lauderdale.  This hotel is very popular with cruisers although the hotel does have its issues (the rooms need renovated).   The reason we often choose this hotel is because we like to dine at Kelly's Landing which is a basic seafood restaurant in that neighborhood.  At Kelly's landing I can get excellent New England Clam Chowder and the restaurant has live Maine Lobster among lots of other excellent seafood.   There are several other hotels in that same neighborhood.  

I should have mentioned that have previously used SAS and they do a good job.  But we waited around the hotel lobby for about 15 min until our van arrived, and then stopped at 2 other hotels before heading to the Port of Miami.  Once at Miami we were unlucky and our ship was the last to be visited by the van.   The last time we looked the cost for 2 with SAS is $30.  The last time we took Uber is was about $32 (the price is probably now about $40).  With Uber or Lyft we simply summon a ride when we are ready to go (not on some kind of schedule) and the car usually arrives within 5 min.  We are then on our way directly to our ship.  Another advantage is that in this COVID ear we are not big fans of being packed into a van with a group of other folks.

I should add that when we cruise out of Port Everglades we generally just grab a taxi (or Uber) from hotel to the port.  It actually costs less than some of the transfer services, is faster, goes when we want to go, and we avoid being packed (like sardines) into a transfer van or mini-bus.    Stand around the lobby of Embassy Suites on a Saturday or Sunday morning and you will usually see crowds of folks just waiting and waiting for their shuttle.

On our recent Seashore cruise, we flew into FLL and spent the night near the airport.  I used Infinity Transportation out of Fort Lauderdale.   They obviously have different kind of services but we chose their chauffeur service.  We had the Chevy Suburban/Lincoln MKT to ourselves.   It was seamless and professional.   I won't say it was inexpensive but I would use them again in a heartbeat.

Uber/Lyft drivers have basic license and in south Florida you can get some slapped out high mileage poorly maintained vehicles with weird smells.

Another vote for SAS.  We usually stay at Embassy Suites FLL and use SAS to get to Port of Miami.

I do digress!  We have had more than our experience with Uber/Lyft in Southeast Florida and always with excellent results.  All the cars that have picked us up were clean and seemed to be in good condition (better than many of the taxis we have used).  The drivers have have varied from very friendly (and talkative) to quiet (often because they lack lots of English skills).  Folks should be aware that there is a huge Hispanic community in South Florida so you can get drivers (with Uber/Lyft or a taxi) that are far more fluent in Spanish than English).  They can be terrific drivers but may not engage in conversation (unless you speak Spanish).  

One issue we have experienced (several times) with south Florida taxis is that some drivers will try to rip-off customers.  This is easy to do with cruisers/tourists who are not familiar with the region (we used to live near Ft Lauderdale so do know the area).  A 1 mile drive from hotel to cruise port can turn into a 4 mile ride!  Sometimes this is justified because of traffic avoidance, but other times it is just a way to run up the meter!  With Uber/Lyft you will know the cost before you make a commitment and payment is handled through your pre-arranged account so no need to pay the driver.  Also keep in mind that when you use Uber/Lyft you have the opportunity to see the rating (by previous customers) of the driver.  If you get a driver with a low rating than you can immediately cancel the ride and seek another option or driver.  We generally avoid any driver with less than a 4.0 rating and feel more comfortable when we get a driver with a rating over 4.5.

You will receive your reservation information as well as the confirmation number into your email, please double check your inbox or junk mail. You can also check your online reservations info in My Reservations page . 

As long as your flight number is the same, nothing happens. Express Shuttle track all reservation’s flight from FLL Airport and does all arrangement to pick you up when you arrive.

Your booking is not considered canceled until Express Shuttle Miami confirms your cancellation. The time of cancellation is considered to be the time Express Shuttle Miami receives your cancellation request.

You may change your booking details at any time greater than 24 hours prior to your pick-up departure time. In order to make a change, you must notify us as soon as possible for any changes to your booking details.

Your booking details are not considered to be changed until we confirm the change. The time of the change is considered to be the time that Express Shuttle Miami confirms the change.

Also, it is recommended that you call us  to make any changes immediately as you need them.

You are eligible for no fees for changing your booking details, for changes greater than 24 hours prior to your pick-up departure time, so long as the total cost of your transfer remains the same.

If booking changes result in lesser charges in addition to the amount previously paid, no partial refund is possible and your fee for the change is equal to the difference between the two charges.

No need to fret if you need tape or a stapler — the friendly baggage handlers will assist you. Remember to show appreciation by tipping them before parking or returning your car.

Boston Cruise Port – Raymond L. Flynn Black Falcon Terminal (Massachusetts)

Simplify your cruise parking experience at the Flynn Cruiseport in the Seaport District near Boston Harbor. Park easily at Congress Street parking or take a free shuttle from your hotel. I find the Baltimore cruise port one of the most accessible places to embark in the country. Parking is $15 daily (cashless) and you can walk to the terminal after parking. There is also RV parking for $30–$40 daily, depending on the size of your rig. Royal Caribbean and Carnival both offer shuttles to and from BWI airport.

As someone who has been on 54 cruises, I can attest that more than half of my voyages have departed from these ports.

Port Canaveral (Orlando, Florida)

Prepare to be amazed! Contrary to popular belief, getting to Port Orlando (also known as Port Canaveral) requires a 48-minute drive, as Orlando is not on the coast. Despite the distance and expense of transportation (an Uber is $98), Port Orlando remains the country’s busiest and most powerful cruise port. Your best option is to take the cruise shuttle from Orlando (airport or hotel) to save the hassle of getting there, traffic, and parking fees. If you decide to drive, however, keep in mind that parking costs $17 per day, including RVs.

With my 10 years of experience living in Florida, I found navigating the port’s parking confusing and lacking proper signage. Thankfully, there are much simpler alternatives to reaching your cruise ship.

But fear not! Despite the initial challenges, PortMiami (known as the Cruise Capital of the World ) is renowned for its efficiency and seamless operation. Like a finely tuned machine, they ensure a hassle-free experience from start to finish. Indulge in the modern marvel that is PortMiami and embark on your dream cruise effortlessly.

Pro Tip: It is important to park in the garage that coincides with your terminal letter (example: Cruise Terminal B — Multi-Level Garage B); though terminals F, G, and V all use Garage G.

This one may throw you for a loop since Port Everglades is the cruise port you’ll want for departing out of Fort Lauderdale. It is only 3 miles from FLL/Hollywood Airport and 25 miles north of Miami International Airport. Uber or Lyft is your best bet and is relatively inexpensive. Secure parking at Port Everglades (4,000 spaces) runs $15 per day or $19 for oversized vehicles.

Tampa International Airport is 21 minutes from the Port Tampa Bay Cruise Terminal or 90 minutes from Orlando (MCO).

Parking will run you $18 daily, though the closest airport is Pensacola, Florida, an hour away. This is definitely a drive to the cruise port destination. Check out the Mobile Carnival Museum or the USS Alabama in your free time.

Port Of New Orleans (NOLA, Louisiana)

A boatload of ships departs the Port of NOLA, making it the 6th busiest cruise port in the country. It is in the heart of the city with a plethora of amazing things to see and do. It is also a port for the three major river cruises (my bucket list!), which adds a feature most cruise ports don’t offer. Parking runs $25 daily at the Erato and Julia Street terminals.

Terminal 2 Concourse D of the Fort Lauderdale International Airport has 3 main airlines: Delta, AirCanada, and WestJet. I used it twice in mid April '24, to fly in from LAX in mid April, and fly out of it to SEA in late April. Inbound Flight: Arrived around 5 AM on a Saturday, so was a bit surprised how busy the airport was. There is one lounge in this terminal (Delta Sky Club), so spent of my morning there. When I got out later that day, it had gotten quite busy both airside and landside. I needed to head over to Terminal 1, and there is no way to do it airside, so had to exit to Baggage Claims, and that's where I saw all the people waiting for their shuttle to take them to the cruise boats. The walk to Terminal 1 took more than the prescribed 5 minutes since it was really hot, and the path is obstructed by travelers with their luggage. Outbound Flight: Arrived at the airport 3 hours before departure, since we really didn't have no other place to be. It was a bit busy during the early afternoon, but got quite empty around 5 pm. A lot of the outlets at the waiting area were loose, so hard to charge. There was nobody else in line to check our bags, and going through the Pre-check line was very easy. Spent most of my time in the Delta lounge, and caught our flight with no issues.

Filthy, disorganized airport. Rude staff and full of bad and expensive restaurants. Went through Global entry but still had to go through TSA!!! Worst airport ever

I always find it interesting how airports have such different layouts. FLL airport is clean with gates, taxis, and pick-up/drop-off areas all easily accessible. There are taxis always going to the ship's port of call, so no need to worry about a ride. The staff is ok, but the gate agent was rather rude. "Well why didn't ya get it ahead of time" said to customers in front of others shows a lack of professionalism due to none of us knowing their situation. Throughout the airport, there are clean restrooms, nursing stations, and I like that you can bring your own bottle to fill at the fountain with no mouths to share it with. This is a terminal where you'll mainly walk to your gate (at least from what I saw), unless you need additional assistance. There are shops throughout the terminal along with sit down restaurants. Personally, I don't like to sit down because time is such a priority. Even with time to burn, I'll usually order to go because I don't know if the service is slow and I don't want to miss any flight information. At the seats, drink holders and charging ports are available and I consider seating adequate.

This review is actually for terminal 4. Flying spirit. With such low ceilings the speakers playing rock music are extremely loud which forces people to speak louder. Incredibly uncomfortable at atmosphere. Don't think I'll do this again.

Flew Delta out of terminal 2 today. Newly remodeled and modern it's a smaller terminal with only 9 gates. Easy to navigate with good signage. Security has some state of the are equipment and 3-D luggage scanners. Food choices are fair. No restaurants but there is a Starbucks, Shake Shack and a wood fire pizza place. For an airport the prices are reasonable. The only lounge is the Delta Sky lounge and since I'm Priority Pass member it doesn't work for me. The seats by the gate have electrical outlets and charging stations underneath. It's a nice touch.

Traveling on a holiday weekend is almost never a good idea, even when that holiday is something as nonsensical as Columbus Day. Multiple full lots meant we had to park so far away from our terminal that a shuttle was necessary. Luckily, the shuttle was free, and waiting when we walked up. The driver was helpful with loading our bags and off we went. FLL is a pretty clean airport, and easy to navigate, so everything seems on track for a successful trip.

This is a nice modern terminal occupied mainly by Delta airlines. From here you can fly to Atlanta almost every hour and from there connect to the world. Flights to other major Delta hubs like Detroit, New York, Salt Lake City and Boston are also available. The terminal is still undergoing renovations so there are areas covered with construction paper and wraps. There's a Sky Club in this terminal. Several restaurants and shops keep the terminal busy and customer focused.

Back at Fll airport as always, they are very professional and helpful. It's always very clean too. The TSA was a little slow today but never the less I made my flight.

This terminal is the worst airport I've been to in years. The process of returning a rental car was aweful. Waiting areas for busses are not clearly marked. The terminal itself has very few options of really bad food.
