'Everything we found shattered our expectations': Archaeologists discover 1st astronomical observatory from ancient Egypt
This first ancient Egyptian observatory discovered in modern times showcases advanced knowledge of astronomy and its profound link to the Egyptians' spiritual and ritualistic practices.
Archaeologists have identified the first ancient Egyptian astronomical observatory on record, which they say is the "first and largest" of its kind, according to a translated statement from the country's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
An Egyptian archaeological team discovered the remains of the sixth-century-B.C. structure three years ago during excavations at an archaeological site in the ancient city of Buto, now called Tell Al-Faraeen, in Egypt's Kafr El-Sheikh governorate.
"Everything we found shattered our expectations," Hossam Ghonim, director general of Kafr El-Sheikh Antiquities and head of the Egyptian archaeological mission, told Live Science.
The team uncovered the ruins of an L-shaped mud-brick building spanning over 9,150 square feet (850 square meters). Its east-facing entrance, marked by a traditional gateway known as a pylon, leads to a spot where sunlight would have illuminated where the sky observer — known as 'smn pe' and who was usually a priest — stood to track the sun and stars, Ghonim said.
The structure still has a carving of smn pe facing the rising sun. This figure symbolizes the ancient Egyptians' connection to the cosmos, Ghonim said.

At first, the team thought they had discovered a temple. Yet, as the excavation progressed, they uncovered artifacts and inscribed symbols, such as Chen, Cenet and Benu, that related to time and astronomy, Ghonim said. But it was the discovery of a huge sundial — along with several inscriptions, artifacts and the layout of the building — that led researchers to make the new announcement that this structure was an observatory, Ghonim explained.

"Along the hall's northern side, we discovered a slanted stone sundial — a sun shadow clock that used the shifting angles of the sun's shadows to determine sunrise, noon and sunset — a simple yet profound method," said Ghonim, who noted that, initially, archaeologists thought the clock was a temple gate. The team also found an ancient Egyptian timekeeping device known as a "merkhet," also from the sixth century B.C., at the site.
These findings shed light on the astronomical techniques used by the ancient Egyptians so they could determine the solar calendar and the dates of religious and official rituals, such as the coronation of kings and the agricultural year, according to the statement.
Mats and pillars
Inside the hall, the archaeologists found an inscribed stone depicting astronomical views of sunrise and sunset across three seasons.
"The ancient Egyptians envisioned the Earth and sky as two mats," Ghonim said. "They mapped the sky on the 'Themet Hrt' — the sky mat — and the 'Themet Ghrt,' or Earth mat, represented their calendar, marking events like the Nile flood and harvest. This is the first inscribed stone mat of its kind ever discovered."
These findings, as well as other inscriptions, add to evidence the Egyptians' deep understanding of seasonal changes and variations in day length.
The archaeologists also found a "triad of pillars" at the hall's entrance — an unusual placement because the typical structure of ancient Egyptian monuments feature pillars at the end of the hall. This unusual placement of pillars suggests that it is not a temple, as previously thought. "We theorized that these pillars might represent the ancient Egyptians' tripartite division of time into seasons, months and weeks," Ghonim said.
Unlike traditional monuments, which typically have a single pylon, the observatory had two pylons facing each other, framing the circular observatory spot and symbolizing akhet , or the horizon where the sun rises. Facing this Akhet was a limestone watchtower that was likely once paired with another and used to observe constellations, Ghonim said.
The excavation also uncovered a statue of the falcon-headed god Horus. The depiction of Horus, along with an eye of Horus, "embodies the systems of the universe and is linked to the sun, the moon, the god Horus, and the goddess Wadjet, the most important gods of Buto," according to the statement.

In ancient times, Buto was dedicated to the goddess Wadjet , a serpent goddess known to be protective of the king. The analysis of the observatory provides more evidence that Wadjet was of great importance to Buto , Ghonim said.
Inside the observatory, archaeologists found a gray, granite statue of King Psamtik I from the Saite era — the 26th dynasty — and a bronze figure of Osiris , a god associated with the underworld and resurrection, with a serpent, referring to the goddess Wadjet. These artifacts, along with various pottery items used in religious rituals, date the observatory to the sixth century B.C. and emphasize its dual role in scientific study and spiritual practice, Ghonim said.

‘First And Largest’ Ancient Egyptian Scientific Center Uncovered, ‘Shattering’ Archaeological Expectations
T he Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities revealed in August the discovery of the first and largest astronomical observatory from their ancient empire.
The roughly 2,600-year-old structure was built of mud bricks and used to watch and record the movement of the sun and stars in the ancient city of Buto, known today as Tell Al-Faraeen, according to an official statement from the ministry . It was initially found three years ago but only revealed in August. The site features a 9,150 square-foot L-shaped building with an east-facing entrance.
The entryway, known as a pylon, leads to an area where sunlight would have tracked the early astronomer — typically a priest known as an “smn pe” — as they observed the sun and stars, Egyptian archaeological mission lead Hossam Ghonim told Live Science.
“Everything we found shattered our expectations,” Ghonim said. The team initially thought they’d uncovered a temple. But artifacts and other symbology within the site soon revealed how meteoric this discovery really was.
One of the biggest finds was a huge sundial, when coupled with other discoveries, led researchers to realize this was a center of scientific importance.
“Along the hall’s northern side, we discovered a slanted stone sundial — a sun shadow clock that used the shifting angles of the sun’s shadows to determine sunrise, noon and sunset — a simple yet profound method,” Ghonim added. The interesting part of this discovery, at least to me, is how it yet again shows how technology and knowledge keeps getting older.

CAIRO – 27 August 2024: Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population, met with representatives of the company implementing the electronic platform for medical tourism, in preparation for its launch in the near future.
The meeting took place at the ministry's headquarters in the New Administrative Capital.
This meeting comes in implementation of the political leadership's directives to accelerate the pace of work to launch the electronic platform for medical tourism and highlight Egypt's capabilities in this field.
The aim is to attract inbound tourism and those seeking medical and recuperative tourism to Egypt, making it a primary destination on the global medical tourism map, as one of the goals of Egypt's Vision 2030 for sustainable development.
Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, explained that the minister was briefed on a detailed presentation of the services that the platform will provide, including artificial intelligence technology that will provide recommendations to platform users.
The platform will also offer advanced features that place Egypt at the forefront of medical tourism countries, as well as providing multi-lingual communication services for platform users to offer a unique and distinctive experience for visitors.
Abdel Ghaffar indicated that the minister directed the contracting of Egyptian doctors abroad to provide health services to visiting patients, stressing the importance of verifying the validity of the certificates of doctors wishing to join the platform.
Abdel Ghaffar added that the platform will provide booking services to enable patients to search for healthcare providers and specialists, and various medical centers based on their needs, and provide detailed information about hospitals and treatment services, in addition to providing educational services for patients about the tourist attractions available in the place where they receive medical services.
Abdel Ghaffar noted that the platform provides a telemedicine service, including virtual consultations to connect patients with healthcare providers and provide follow-up services for patients after returning to their countries, in addition to a multilingual customer service to answer all patient inquiries.

One of the oldest civilisations in the world, India is a mosaic of multicultural experiences. With a rich heritage and myriad attractions, the country is among the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It covers an area of 32, 87,263 sq. km, extending from the snow-covered Himalayan heights to the tropical rain forests of the south. As the 7th largest country in the world, India stands apart from the rest of Asia, marked off as it is by mountains and the sea, which give the country a distinct geographical entity.
Fringed by the Great Himalayas in the north, it stretches southwards and at the Tropic of Cancer, tapers off into the Indian Ocean between the Bay of Bengal on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. As you travel the expanse of the country, you are greeted by diverse nuances of cuisines, faiths, arts, crafts, music, nature, lands, tribes, history and adventure sports. India has a mesmeric conflation of the old and the new. As the bustling old bazaars rub shoulders with swanky shopping malls, and majestic monuments accompany luxurious heritage hotels, the quintessential traveller can get the best of both worlds. Head to the mountains, enjoy a beach retreat or cruise through the golden Thar, India has options galore for all.

Cambodia may be a small country, but it offers everything one needs for a wonderful vacation. Above the many reasons why most visitors return to visit time and again, are two that many would find difficult to match elsewhere. Firstly, Cambodia offers an incredible amount of history and culture and its nature is simply amazing to say the least; ranging from the gorgeous National Parks to the pristine beaches and relaxing islands, the flavours of Cambodia are not only in the exotic cuisines, but also its overall ambience. If you’re planning to visit Southeast Asia, Cambodia is certainly a ‘Must-visit’ destination.
