Chaffee type shuttlepod

Chaffee descending

The Chaffee -type was a shuttlepod design used by the Federation Starfleet . This class of shuttlepod was carried aboard the Defiant -class starships in the late- 24th century .

Technical data [ ]

The Chaffee -type shuttlepod had a small cockpit with room for about four people. The primary power grid was powered by the impulse engines . The grid made no use of antimatter . For this reason it was capable of entering areas of subspace metreon radiation that would normally collapse the dilithium matrix of a warp core . The pod also had back-up power in case the impulse power failed. There were also primary and secondary navigational computers. The pod was protected with deflector shields . ( DS9 : " The Sound of Her Voice ")

Appendices [ ]

Background information [ ].

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual (p. 137) designated this shuttle as the Type 10 shuttlecraft , as suggested by the ship's designer Doug Drexler and was based on the Type 6 shuttlecraft spaceframe, whose RCS thrusters were incorporated into the design. This type of shuttlecraft was equipped with miniature versions of the Defiant -class impulse and warp drive, with a similar armored warp coil assemblies. Shuttles were armed with phaser emitters and micro-torpedo launchers . Systems also included a Danube -class computer core , shields and signal intelligence jamming devices. Other specifications given by the manual are:

  • Accommodation: 4, crew
  • Dimensions: Length, 9.64 meters; beam, 5.82 meters; height, 3.35 meters
  • Mass: 19.73 metric tonnes (unloaded)

The type-10 terminology is also used in Star Trek: Starship Spotter .

Studio model [ ]

The Chaffee was born out of necessity when it was discovered that the physical studio model of the original Type 18 shuttlepod had been stolen. [1] (X) Effects supervisor Gary Hutzel turned to Drexler to design a new, larger shuttlecraft now to be realized as a CGI model . " When Gary Hutzel approached me about designing a new larger shuttle for the Defiant, I resisted big-time. I had just, and I mean just finished the interior cutaway for Starfleet's armored warship [rem: for the Deep Space Nine Technical Manual ] . Now Gary was asking me to find a place for this thing. As I rabidly went through all the reasons why it couldn't be done, I saw it in my head, did a 180, and gushed about how this could be done. Gary looked at me grinning like a little kid, "I knew ya' could do it! Is it done yet?!" ", Drexler recalled. [2] (X)

Doug Drexler 's design sketches of the Chaffee

As for the design Drexler remarked, " I took a cue from Walter "Matt" Jefferies once again when coming up with the concept. The original Galileo shuttle as seen in TOS had the same nacelles as the Enterprise . That way the audience would have instant recognition as to who the shuttle belonged to. The Chaffee carried the unusual looking drum shaped nacelles as the Defiant . I'm sorry we never saw it again. Foundation Imaging did their usual great job showing the Chaffee exiting the mother ship. " [3] Drexler made use of the opportunity to give the craft a less boxlike, more sleek appearance, " Truthfully, we all wanted to see a shuttle for the Defiant that suggested greater range, power, and sex appeal. " [4] (X)

A bit of commotion was caused when it came to naming the shuttle Chaffee . " What I really remember is us getting scolded by someone in the office for naming the shuttle Chaffee. Who do you think you are naming a shuttlecraft after your girlfriend! Now it was time for me to be impressed. Rick Berman jumped in and set the record straight. 'Don't be ridiculous! Chaffee is one of the Apollo 1 astronauts that died on the pad. Approved!' ", Drexler fondly remembered. [5] (X)

Chaffee Type shuttle CGI model

MacDougall's CGI model

Drexler finished up on two design sketches a day later and turned them in at Foundation where Brandon MacDougall fine-tuned the design and turned it into a CGI model. [6] (X) It was MacDougall who gave the Chaffee a scaled down Constitution II -class impulse drive /impulse deflector crystal assembly as a subtle homage to that class. [7] (X) MacDougall's model went on to make several appearances in and onto licensed Star Trek print publications, most notably in the Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendars and their book derivative.

According to designer Drexler " I pulled out the LightWave model of the Chaffee and measured it, and it is twenty-six feet long [7.9 meters]. " [8] (X) Author Larry Nemecek wrote down a length of 25 feet (7.6 meters) based on a May 5, 1998 verbal comment from Visual Effects Supervisor Gary Hutzel , who worked on The Sound of Her Voice . [9]

Drexler's design sketches were later sold on 8 August 2010 as Lot 170 in the Propworx ' The official STAR TREK prop and costume auction , estimated at US$100-$200, where they sold for US$360 (including buyer's premium).

Apocrypha [ ]

The Star Trek: Divided We Fall comic miniseries identifies another type Type-10 shuttlecraft, the Sagan , that was assigned to the second Defiant . The Sagan appears in several Star Trek: Deep Space Nine novels.

Make this ‘Star Trek’ motel part of a geeky getaway on the Oregon coast

L ooking to boldly go where … frankly, many men have gone before? Book a night in the uber-popular Star Trek room at the Itty Bitty Inn in North Bend on the southern Oregon coast.

The Star Trek themed motel room places guests on the bridge of the original Starship Enterprise, complete with screen-accurate controls and wall-mounted communicators. Inn owner Rik Villarreal, an electrician by trade, has installed buttons and switches throughout the room that activate various sound and lighting effects.

There’s a tri-dimensional chessboard, paper masks of your favorite Starfleet characters, a few tribbles hidden here and there, copies of the original movies to be watched in the room, viewing logs for all the original episodes, an owner’s manual for the Bird-of-Prey warship (written in Klingon) … and it only gets geekier from there.

Ensign Rizzo — notable as the rare “red shirt” to survive an attack on an away mission — carries a towel rack. The bathroom has a 1930′s style in tribute to the time-travel episode “City on the Edge of Forever.” Two framed newspapers in the bathroom depict two realities — one where social worker Edith Keeler is killed, another where she meets with the president about her peace initiative. (Fans will get the reference.)

“In the captain’s log, you’ll find signatures from people who worked on ‘DS9,’ on ‘Voyager,’ on ‘TNG,’” Villarreal said. Marina Sirtis, who played Counselor Deanna Troi, once stayed the night.

Many of the guests come wearing their own cosplay, including Jeff and Jennifer Hunger, recent visitors from Chicago who booked the room a year in advance.

“We’re huge Star Trek fans,” Jeff said while posing with a tribble and sharing a Vulcan hand salute.

You can’t miss the Itty Bitty Inn during a drive along U.S. Hwy 101 in North Bend. The motel is covered in murals of both Star Trek and Star Wars characters, and a glowing sign promises “themed rooms.”

The Itty Bitty Inn was the original name of the small, five-room motel when it opened in 1950. Villarreal said he wasn’t looking to become an innkeeper, but the former owners, who were friends, approached him about buying the motel in 2014.

Villarreal – who had no background in hospitality but was moving back to his hometown of North Bend – figured, why not? He could run the motel and live there.

“It was a clean, humble vibe, just an old-school motor inn,” he said. “Their mission was to provide a clean, quality service, without necessarily pumping a whole lot of kitschy goofiness into it.”

But Villarreal envisioned a geeky, retro oasis on the Oregon coast. He redesigned the motel rooms around things he loved: namely, Star Trek, tiki lounges and the 1970s.

“Just by nature, I can be a little dramatic, if not flamboyant,” Villarreal said. “I wanted to exercise some creative freedom that my job did not allow me to.”

That other job? Providing energy management for corporations and the defense sector with his business, EdComm — something that, as he puts it, doesn’t always allow for flourishes of “dramatic creativity.”

He’s put plenty of drama into the Itty Bitty Inn.

In addition to the Star Trek room, the motel has two tiki-themed rooms — the Tiki Cha Cha room, named after a KBOO radio program (whose founder lives in North Bend) with a ceiling painted like a grass hut, and the Tiki Lounge room, with more of a swanky vibe. Each room is furnished with mid-century decor and comes with a stash of “emergency leis.” The Tiki Lounge room has a record player loaded with Martin Denny records.

The Oregon Trail room features posters from old westerns and a large mural of the Three Sisters mountains. It’s admittedly the least wild of the rooms, though Villarreal is considering turning it into the forest moon of Endor for Star Wars fans.

The Disco room comes with a light switch that activates a spinning disco ball and plays the Bee Gee’s hit “Staying Alive.”

“What ‘70′s room would be complete without a rebuilt vintage Atari 2600 circa 1979,” Villarreal said, opening the top dresser drawer to reveal a stash of game cartridges. “I happen to know that Atari Millipede, Space Invaders and Donkey Kong pairs remarkably well with a locally brewed IPA or cranberry cider.”

Guests who aren’t in the disco room but want to get their retro gaming on can rent a vintage Atari, an assortment of game cartridges and an old-style cathode-ray tube television for $15.

“I think the amount of people that (the motel) brings in is really something special,” said Vera Martinez, Villarreal’s daughter and co-innkeeper. “We see walks of life from all over the world. We’ll have people come from Europe, Asia, South Africa. We like to regard this as a second home for them.”

Each modest room comes with a tiled shower and toilet, and a small breakfast nook with a mini fridge and microwave. Guests are offered complimentary fresh-ground coffee from Bridge View Coffee Roasters and local IPAs or cranberry cider (Coos County is Oregon’s cranberry capital , after all). Villarreal will shuttle people to and from North Bend’s tiny airport and provide bike trail and kayaking drop offs. Guests can also check out bicycles to get around town (along with helmets and safety vests.)

Villarreal has installed two 60-amp car chargers in the parking lot, with instructions written in English, Klingon and Aurebesh (for the Star Wars fans.)

“We are all inclusive here,” he said.

With rates ranging from $89-$128, the Itty Bitty Inn was named Yelp’s No. 1 Budget Hotel in the U.S. in 2019. To book a room at the Itty Bitty Inn, 1504 Sherman Ave. in North Bend, visit ittybittyinn.com or call 541-756-6398.

Villarreal grew up in North Bend, which he described as “the Oregon Coast’s nerdy little secret.”

“Geek culture here has always been big, since I was a little kid,” he said. “Dungeons and Dragons, sci-fi. We were doing cosplay before anybody called it cosplay.”

If you’re planning a geeky getaway to North Bend, here’s a few other stops to add to your trip:

Recycle Video Games, 1942 Sherman Ave.: This retailer specializing in rare retro video games and gaming systems has four locations on the Oregon coast but is headquartered in North Bend. Owner Annie Jackson repairs, cleans and buys used games and equipment, and has an impressive collection on display, including a Commodore 64 and Video Computer System by Atari in original boxes. (Stay tuned: She’s thinking about creating a video game museum.)

Yoda’s Hut, 775 N. Front St.: Technically, this Star Wars-themed food cart is in neighboring Coos Bay, but it’s within walking or biking distance of North Bend. Named the Best Food Truck of 2023 in the Toast of the South Coast awards, chef Ron Phillips said he earned the nickname Yoda for his skill behind the grill. Yoda’s Hut serves all-day breakfast (try the Leia, a burrito with caramelized onions, mushrooms, peppers, eggs, potatoes and cheese) and sandwiches (the Yoda is a smoked ribeye sandwich with roasted garlic aioli.) Find it at the new Front Street Food Trucks pod.

Liberty Pub , 2047 Sherman Ave.: At first glance, the Liberty Pub looks like your standard small-town bar. Then you notice the Dungeons & Dragons gaming table in the back and the paintings on the walls of the Borg Queen, a Sleestak and Jar Jar Binks. It’s the perfect place to stop for pizza and embark on an adventure.

Gamers’ Cantina, 761 Virginia Ave.: Every Friday night, you can find folks throwing down Magic cards at this hobby store , which sells supplies and miniatures for Magic the Gathering, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Dungeons & Dragons and more tabletop role playing games. Thursdays are “ D&D with Darrel .” Check the store’s Facebook page for more upcoming tournaments.

Last year it was revealed that Fanhome would be picking up the baton of making new die-cast Star Trek ship models, after Eaglemoss went out of business in 2022. This morning Fanhome revealed their first releases and more details on the collection coming out later this year.

New Star Trek Die-Cast Collection

Fanhome is launching their new official Star Trek Starships model collection in November, with a new die-cast model starship being released every month. The collection will cover all the modern Star Trek series including Picard , Strange New Worlds , Discovery , Lower Decks and Prodigy . They have confirmed that the first three ships will be…

U.S.S. Titan NCC-80201-A

Captain Shaw’s Constitution III-class ship from Star Trek: Picard .

All the ships will be crafted from a combination of die-cast metal and high-quality resin, and the typical model will be between 7” and 9” (180-225 mm) long. Fanhome are working with Paramount Global to ensure the models are as accurate as possible and they will all be based on the original visual effects models that were used to make the effects for the show.

Each model will come with a 16-page magazine that provides an in-universe profile of the ship and explores the design process with exclusive art and brand new interviews with the production team. The project is being supervised by Ben Robinson, who previously oversaw Star Trek ship models and products for Eaglemoss.

The ships are exclusively available from Fanhome.com individually and via a subscription program. Subscribers will also get a unique variant ship and other exclusive gifts.

There will also be regular, higher-priced XL-sized models for major ships that will be approximately 11” (280 mm) long.

It’s a shame that they aren’t making these in Eaglemoss’ original standard size.

True, but to be fair, those weren’t all to scale to each other. Not that these will either. Still a smaller scale, closer to the original Eaglemoss size would have been nice too, especially for those on a tighter budget or less space to display their ship collection. The bigger the ships the more space you need. Hopefully, Fanhome will only make ships that are more desirable versus trying to make almost every single ship ever seen on screen that a lot of people don’t care too much for. From the original Eaglemoss line, I only ever bought Starfleet ships.

Scale is important. It doesn’t make sense to display the Enterprise-E next to the Defiant when the models are of comparable size whereas in “reality” the E is 4 times larger…

As any kid who collected plastic animals knows, scale consistency will price you out pretty fast — or leave you with a little tiny fox or whatever so you can afford a blue whale. It does “make sense” to display them together b/c you know they’re models. You just have to let them be models. If you’re going to be doing realistic photography than you will have to digitally alter them to be in scale.

If I did buy these ship models (and I don’t), I would not consider them as models per se, but rather my own miniature Starfleet… So the scale would be an issue for me. For practical reasons though, you make a valid point and maybe it’s my view that doesn’t “make sense”.

Same, I have almost every Starfleet ship and shuttle from Eaglemoss, especially thanks to the recent blowout sale

Well they did go bankrupt.

At least they are starting with the ships that we didn’t get as oppose to another TOS USS Enterprise NCC-1701 and TNG USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, which I am sure that they will make new versions of too, but I imagine that most collectors will want to get these new ships first.

Just a shame the new ships are ugly af compared to the classic designs of TOS/TNG/DS9 era Trek.

I agree, I really am not a big fan of most things Nu Trek, particularly the ships. That Farragut is so ugly, very strange nacelle struts. The Titan is an abomination frankly, which Junkball Media on YouTube called an “ugly duckling” of almost kitbashed parts, but it has grown on me the more I see of it. I do appreciate a general consistency among the fleet in terms of the nacelles themselves, though. Picard S3 gave us a lot of interesting variant classes that might be worth seeing together on a shelf…

Great point! While I’m not a huge fan of these newer designs, it’s good to see them getting proper treatment.

Hope Fanhome makes a USS Enterprise-A from the end of Star Trek: Beyond. I’m not a big fan of the new movies and new ship designs, but Beyond was actually a personal favorite of mine and I actually liked the new Enterprise-A design over the original Kelvin Enterprise designs.

The new A was an interesting design from the little we saw. I was bummed that Eaglemoss never did it.

The ‘A’ actually came off reasonably well in the few seconds of screen time allotted to it — but, man, before getting too excited check out Sean Hargreaves’ side profile artwork sometime. One word: ugh!

Yeah, it’s definitely bulky. Not my favorite, but it’s an interesting permutation on the classic Enterprise model.

I agree I think it’s very oddly proportioned, not a huge fan of the nacelle struts. I really liked the Kelvinprise personally, especially the first 2 movies and less so the refit from Beyond with smaller swept back nacelles.

Also, TREKMOVIE, did you see that BigBadToystore.com is selling pre-orders for new bendy FleXfigs Star Trek action figures of Captains Benjamin Sisko (seasons 6 & 7 of DS9 uniform), Jean-Luc Picard (TNG seasons 3-7 uniform), James T. Kirk (TOS), and Christopher Pike (SNW)? The figures are made by The Canadian Group and are for sale at $10.99 USD on the BigBadToystore website.

why start not even one ship that would get people interested in the line?

Are you kidding? The Titan is literally the one ship I have been waiting to get a model of.

Oh yeah sure, let’s start another model line with the same constitution and galaxy-class models that every single company makes.

I literally gasped aloud seeing the Titan. I don’t even collect these! I’m getting my first one, an Enterprise-D, from a giveaway — and even I’m like “I might need that Titan”. Like, dude, just b/c YOU feel a certain way doesn’t mean everyone else does. I wish fans would learn to just speak for themselves.

i mistyped the original comment and can’t fix. I meant to say, why start the line without at least one of the more well-known ships to get more casual, first timers interested. The Titan is cool but without a bigger name ship, I’d be concerned that it will fizzle.

Also – I would take it as an axiom that of course I’m just speaking for myself. Just like you are…. eyeroll

I see your point, but don’t rule out the popularity of the Titan-A and the Stargazer with fandom and ‘new’ fandom.

Well at least you can tell who the intended audience is for these. It makes sense to be that they’re sort of “taking the baton” so to speak from Eaglemoss who didn’t stick around long enough to make these newer ships. I’m just frustrated they have to come in the larger size and with the larger price tag. I got no room for these behemoths.

These are the wrong ships to be launching with. I’ll get the Titan if the quality is good enough.

I remember getting the Enterprise A XL from Eaglemoss and looking at it in disbelief. It was so badly made.

Yeah, I read an article describing all the mistakes on that ship. There was just no excuse for them at all, especially at that price.

The Diamond Select ship was far far better.

and now the A XL goes for 250 to 500 on ebay. Masterreplicas didnt find anymore before removing the ships but interestingly real merch had them in stock shortly for like 80 bucks, after everyone thought there arent any left.

also does the A XL look so bad from 12 ft away?

I don’t look to bad from 12 feet away, but you don’t want a close up. Trust me.

No, it’s fine. It’s just that there are some blatant details, especially on the saucer, that are all wrong and there’s no reason for them to be.

Hello Beautiful. Love that Titan.

They have a Dutch website as well, but nothing about the new Trek ships on there yet.

They only can be shipped to US, UK and Germany. To other countries shipment is not possible.

The Constitution III-class and the Farragut look pretty cool.

These are just not in the price range I am looking for. Why can’t we get a return of Star Trek MicroMachines or better yet something like the Jazzwares Star Wars Micro Galaxy Squadron ships?

The Fanhome website shows the Enterprise F as well. YES!!!

I’d buy the titan. I don’t collect post modern trek items, but I’d make an exception for Captain Shaw’s ship.

When wasn’t Trek postmodern, I wonder? The TNG era was a textbook exercise in postmodern art. In my head I call that the “reverent Trek” era – the time when the franchise took itself seriously and honored its roots. Everything post Kelvin to me is the “irreverent Trek” era – let’s just blow sh*t up and do our own thing without any respect for what came before.

Generally speaking I’m a huge starship geek, and thanks to the recent Master Replicas sale of Eaglemoss overstock I have a model of just about every Starfleet ship. I’m not the biggest fan of the ships we’ve seen on screen since Discovery premiered – there were a few from Disco’s 23rd century that grabbed me, but we didn’t get a good look at most of them anyway thanks to the terrible VFX shots. Picard’s 24th century ships were a lot better looking imo, and I might pick up a Titan even though I consider it a shameful nostalgia bait-y design that makes zero sense in universe.

My only concern is that, like with the Disco and Picard Eaglemoss ships which were so unpopular (cuz the series were so unpopular), they’re making these things too large. Who at this point has room for more 8 inch models on their shelves? I loved how Eaglemoss made XL versions of classic “hero” starships, but never made us fork over 60 bucks for, say, an 8 inch Freedom class. But that’s exactly what they did with the Nu Trek designs, and that’s why I didn’t buy them, and it’s why I’m very skeptical of this new line making such third rate designs like the Farragut in the same size class as the Titan. These ships just aren’t that good or important to justify it, and I doubt they’ll ever sell in quantity.

I would love a collection of enterprises all in the same scale. I’m sure many others would too, but I also understand how it might not work so well in the bigger marketplace.

Perhaps they could consider doing a Kickstarter like circumstance, where we pre-pay, and they base the manufacturing and volume based on that. Kind of like Tomy didwith their big Enterprise. I wonder if that would be viable?

“Everything’s okay. People respect you”: Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner Had to Personally Intervene after Patrick Stewart’s Wild Hissy Fit on Star Trek Set

P atrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, and, Brent Spiner worked alongside in the iconic 1987 series  Star Trek: The Next Generation. With Stewart reprising his role of Jean-Luc Picard, and Spiner and Frakes portraying William T. Raker and Data/Lore respectively, the trio had their fair share of good time on the sets.

However, it wasn’t always a good time for the cast. While shooting the first season of the 1987 show, Sir Patrick Stewart apparently walked off the set because he was laughed at! Sharing the story in his memoir, Stewart revealed that all was in good nature and that he too had a lesson to learn from it.

When Sir Patrick Stewart Became Furious

Back in 1987, the  X-Men  actor had made himself famous by portraying the role of Captain Picard in the  Star Trek  franchise. With the inception of  The Next Generation,  the actor got into his serious role and wanted to give the series his utmost dedication.

Things took a turn for the worse, however, when Patrick Stewart’s co-stars started goofing around on the sets of the series. From multiple retakes to ad-libbing the script to make it more funny, Stewart did not like the unseriousness of the people at all.

After Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart Nearly Had a Star-crossed Star Trek Reunion With William Shatner in The Next Generation

Since the actor was a part of the Royal Shakespearean Company, he hadn’t seen this much goofing around on set. While writing in his memoir titled Making It So: A Memoir (via The Hollywood Reporter ), the actor talked about how he got a little angry at his castmates.

My castmates doubled over in laughter when they flubbed multiple takes and, in rehearsals, they sometimes ad-libbed things that weren’t in the script to make their lines funnier

He further continued,

That’s when I called that meeting in which I lectured the cast for goofing off and responded to Denise Crosby’s, ‘We’ve got to have some fun sometimes, Patrick,’ comment by saying, ‘We are not here, Denise, to have fun.’

Expecting that the people would understand the intensity of the situation, Sir Patrick Stewart was both surprised and humiliated when the cast started laughing! Not taking his words seriously, Stewart himself writes that he didn’t handle the embarrassment well.

“This was not at all a mark of disrespect”: Patrick Stewart Had 3 Specific Conditions That Essentially Doomed Star Trek: Picard Season 4

As the excerpt continued, the Macbeth  actor further wrote about how he felt that he had lost the respect of his cast mates. With no one taking him seriously, Sir Patrick Stewart had no choice but to storm off from the meeting and slam his trailer door.

Sir Patrick Stewart Stormed Off And Slammed His Trailer Door

Although the humiliating feeling of getting laughed at was too overbearing for the actor at that moment, Patrick Stewart is chill with it now. In his memoir, the actor mentioned that even though it was not a good day for him, he and the rest of the cast still laugh about it to this day.

Facing some disrespect from his castmates, the Logan  actor left the conference room in a sulking mood, went to his trailer, and slammed the door in anger.

In retrospect, everyone, me included, finds this story hilarious. But, in the moment, when the cast erupted in hysterics at my pompous declaration, I didn’t handle it well. I didn’t enjoy being laughed at. I stormed off the set and into my trailer, slamming the door.

The actor further wrote that it was at this moment when Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner knocked on his door to talk to him.

[Brent Spiner said to me] Everything’s okay. People respect you, but I think you misjudged the situation here. I had failed to read the room, imposing RSC behavior on people accustomed to the ways of episodic television — which was, after all, what we were shooting.

After a while, Patrick Stewart got a hang of things about how different people act alongside their iconic skills. Over the course of the series, the actor acknowledged that the cast should be allowed to goof around and he even joined in the fun later on!

“We’re not stuck in a formula for entertainment”: Years Before Infinity War, Patrick Stewart Revealed the 1 Rule for Marvel to Beat Superhero Fatigue

Star Trek: The Next Generation  ran for 7 seasons with the finale released in 1994. The iconic television series received a rating of 8.7/10 on IMDB and a whopping 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.  The series is available to stream on Paramount+ in the U.S.

Can.not.wait!!!

I’m rewatching season 1 again (currently on episode 7) with a bit of Voyager thrown in for good measure mainly focusing on Janeway and The Doctor episodes and it all feels like visiting old friends each and every time.

This show just gives me all the great Trek feels I have had since the 70s. It’s a little bit of VOY, TOS, TNG and ENT all rolled into one for me. In other words, it’s pure Star Trek. And I have missed the 24th century.

July 1st can’t get here fast enough.

I would have to say, I really liked Prodigy S1. Even though it is animated, it has a live action feel to the show and the story has been good. And the opening theme is great, perhaps the best music of NuTrek, not counting the Picard S3 closing credits haha!

I see nothing yet scheduled for Canada. Too bad, because I did re-sign back up to Netflix for the first time in about 10 years to watch their take on the Three Body Problem. Hope they announce something soon for us fans north of the border.

Wait, you guys still don’t know when the show will air in Canada yet? That’s crazy. I assumed it would just be on the same cable channel as the others. I hope it gets rectified soon but as you know there are other options in the mean time.

But of course you know my feelings about Prodigy very very well. And I would say if this WAS a live action show it would be a huge hit IMO. Maybe not as big as Picard or SNW, but definitely bigger than Discovery. Hopefully season 2 will be as good as season one but all indication is it is.

As for The Three Body Problem I liked the show so much I started reading the original novels. I’m on the second book right now in fact. They are really good so far. The audiobook of the first book is narrated by Rosalind Chao. :)

Please please please let this be a hit on Netflix. I so want seasons 3,4 ,5 …

Thanks for adding the episode numbers! Y’all are the best!

A lot of these do a great job of showing how beautiful its art style is IMO, and give a great taste of what’s to come in season 2 (even if a lot of them do come from the trailer). I’m just so ready for it to come already.

Subscribing to Netflix for one month just for this!

Cetacean ops, yeah baby!

Season 1 of Prodigy is on the CTV app in Canada. For which a cable subscription is required, and I think, (can’t confirm because I don’t HAVE cable) you need to have access to the CTV SciFi channel. Which is so stupid. Honestly considering a VPN at this point. I want to support the show, but I literally can’t here.

VPN Netflix is the way.

It honestly looks really good! The second half of the first season was really quite good because it was way more Starfleet oriented so this season should be a real treat. Also these serialized shows are in my opinion much more enjoyable when you can watch the episodes at will. If the first season was more like that I think more people would have stayed tune. Also I think Netflix has a higher bit rate which should make watching such a beautifully computer animated show that much more enjoyable.

I am very much looking forward to this season. With the exception of Picard season 3, so much of NuTrek has been mostly a miss for me since 2009. So much of the writing has been subpar. There is very little depth in the stories and just doesn’t have the same glow in the story telling and the themes you got in the golden age of Trek from 1966-2005. With a few exceptions here and there very little of it hasn’t come close to what made those classic shows and movies so special for me.

That was until I finally watched Prodigy and it brought me back to the thoughtful and clever stories pre-2009. The characters felt like real characters and not just archtypes or caricatures. They actually care about canon snd nothing feels out of place like it does in Discovery and SNW. They use fan service but once again when it feels appropriate and lot less of it compared to awkwardly throwing in Kirk on SNW or their strange use of the Gorn. You don’t have new characters related to legacy characters as a feeble attempt to make fans care more about those characters like they did on Picard, SNW and Discovery. It just makes the universe feel infinitely smaller when someone is Spock’s sister, Data’s daughter or Khan’s whatever. 🙄

Prodigy feels like its own thing on one hand but a loose sequel to Voyager on the other to draw older fans like me in but without having to know anything about that show for younger and newer fans. But it captures the spirit of classic Star Trek that frankly I wasn’t sure we would ever get again. I do realize SNW has tried to capture it again and it feels closer to the older shows for sure but it just feels too surface level with subpar writing and making the characters feel like they are in high school. And it doesn’t have to feel like a silly sitcom in most of the episodes. That’s a big reason why I can’t even force myself to watch LDS and I know how popular that show is too.

The irony about Prodigy is a lot of the characters are literally high school age and feels more well rounded and mature at times. I didn’t expect that at all.

I know a lot of old fans have been divided on NuTrek the last 15 years and just feel it’s mostly been a turnoff for many just as much as I’m aware others have truly enjoyed all the new shows and films which I applaud. I’m certainly not suggesting everyone hates this new era of Trek (nor should) but sadly I was in the former camp until the last year or so.

So it’s very surprising for me a show designed for preteens have captured my heart and attention again I haven’t felt since Enterprise went off the air.

And it truly feels wonderful!

“The characters felt like real characters and not just archtypes or caricatures. They actually care about canon and nothing feels out of place like it does in Discovery and SNW. They use fan service but once again when it feels appropriate and lot less of it compared to awkwardly throwing in Kirk on SNW or their strange use of the Gorn.” […] “Prodigy feels like its own thing on one hand but a loose sequel to Voyager on the other to draw older fans like me in but without having to know anything about that show for younger and newer fans. But it captures the spirit of classic Star Trek that frankly I wasn’t sure we would ever get again.”

All very well stated, and I wholeheartedly agree about the irony that this “preteen/teen” show feels more grown-up, well written and overall well rounded than any of the other recent shows! 👏😎 (Just imagine if they could’ve made it an actual live-action show! 👍👍)

“So it’s very surprising for me a show designed for preteens have captured my heart and attention again I haven’t felt since Enterprise went off the air.”

I think a lot of people agrees with you! :)

And I know I said this before but I am happy you have finally loved something in the modern era out of the gate.

“There is very little depth in the stories and just doesn’t have the same glow in the story telling and the themes you got in the golden age of Trek from 1966-2005. With a few exceptions here and there very little of it hasn’t come close to what made those classic shows and movies so special for me.”

It’s very funny reading statements like this, because there were people who said the exact same things about the old spin offs shows back in the day when they compared them to TOS. A great example came from this very board from an article written by Mark A. Altman (which I’m sure you and everyone knows) who literally wrote a piece called “Star Trek Lives” back in 2006. I always love reading past Trek articles and reviews and found that one a few weeks ago.

Annnyway, I bring it up because in the article, he was very busy praising JJ Abrams and how the first Kelvin movie was going to redefine Star Trek as we know it (apparently) and he literally called all the spin offs at the time including TNG and DS9 as ‘outdated’, ‘bland’ and would be forgotten in a few years time. He literally called them ‘unwatchable’…in 2006. He was convinced the spin off shows just didn’t live up to what TOS was at the time and no one was going to even care about those shows anymore once this brave new world of the JJ Abrams brand of Star Trek started lol.

It’s pretty comical today considering he wrote that nearly 20 years ago and YET not only does he himself talk about those same old shows with much higher esteem and praise today, he talks about them more than any of the new shows (not counting Picard season 3 since it brings back the type of Star Trek he was denouncing back then) and including the Kelvin movies.

But it really does prove that as fans A. nostalgia always has a way of catching up to everything eventually (which is how many looked at TOS itself 20-30 years ago of course) and that B. views can just change in time (and the old shows, ironically, have all aged very well and why they are still so popular). But the same way you talk about all the old shows today and how modern Trek can’t hold a candle to them I will guarantee you many will be saying the same thing about Picard, Lower Decks, Discovery and etc in 20 years time when whatever is next in the iteration will be seen as grossly inferior. And I know others in fact do like those shows now but of course many of us still loved the old shows back then too.

But of course that’s after fans hail the next thing as the ‘savior’ of the franchise as many did believe the Kelvin movies and even Discovery would do before they start dumping on it when it doesn’t reach that height, ie, Disney Star Wars lol. Yes that too will have just as many gushers in time as well. Time truly is a flat circle in fandom. ;)

Now all that said, you know I don’t disagree with some of your issues. I like SNW more than you but as I have always stated the canon issues and the forced fan service does it no favors, but it does really feel like Star Trek. I love LDS but get why others hate it too.

But I will say even though there is certainly a division in the fandom it’s not as bad as it was just a few years ago when it was just Discovery and Picard or the dreaded days of STID lol. And no matter what, say what you will about Star Trek fandom, it’s nowhere close to the vitriol of where Star Wars fandom is these days. I mean you see what is happening over The Acolyte, yikes!!!! Discovery almost feels like TNG in popularity compared to how that’s being treated lol.

eww Chakotay

kinda disappointed in the Voyager-A design (its not bad)….i’m with capt. freeman, i hate it when every ship gets all sovereign-y
