New cyberattack targets iPhone Apple IDs. Here's how to protect your data.

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Alain Sherter

Updated on: July 9, 2024 / 2:38 PM EDT / CBS News

A new cyberattack is targeting iPhone users, with criminals attempting to obtain individuals' Apple IDs in a "phishing" campaign, security software company Symantec  said in an alert Monday.

Cyber criminals are sending text messages to iPhone users in the U.S. that appear to be from Apple, but are in fact an attempt at stealing victims' personal credentials.

"Phishing actors continue to target Apple IDs due to their widespread use, which offers access to a vast pool of potential victims," Symantec said. "These credentials are highly valued, providing control over devices, access to personal and financial information, and potential revenue through unauthorized purchases."

Consumers are also more likely to trust communications that appear to come from a trusted brand like Apple, warned Symantec, which is owned by Broadcom, a maker of semiconductors and infrastructure software.

The malicious SMS messages appear to come from Apple and encourage recipients to click a link and sign in to their iCloud accounts. For example, a phishing text could say: "Apple important request iCloud: Visit signin[.]authen-connexion[.]info/icloud to continue using your services." Recipients are also asked to complete a CAPTCHA challenge in order to appear legitimate, before they're directed to a fake iCloud login page.

Such cyberattacks are commonly referred to as "smishing" schemes in which criminals use fake text messages from purportedly reputable organizations, rather than email, to lure people into sharing personal information, such as account passwords and credit card data.

How to protect yourself

Be cautious about opening any text messages that appear to be sent from Apple. Always check the source of the message — if it's from a random phone number, the iPhone maker is almost certainly not the sender. iPhone users should also avoid clicking on links inviting people to access their iCloud account; instead, go to login pages directly.

"If you're suspicious about an unexpected message, call, or request for personal information, such as your email address, phone number, password, security code, or money, it's safer to presume that it's a scam — contact that company directly if you need to," Apple said in a post on avoiding scams.

Apple urges users to always enable multi-factor authentication for Apple ID for extra security and to make it harder to access to your account from another device. It is "designed to make sure that you're the only person who can access your account," Apple said.

Apple adds that its own support representatives will never send its users a link to a website and ask them to sign in, or to provide your password, device passcode, or two-factor authentication code.

"If someone claiming to be from Apple asks you for any of the above, they are a scammer engaging in a social engineering attack. Hang up the call or otherwise terminate contact with them," the company said .

Other tips for avoiding smishing scams, according to government  watchdogs :

  • Set up your computer and mobile phone so that security software is updated automatically
  • Never click links, reply to texts or call unknown phone numbers
  • Never respond to unrecognized texts even if you're asked to "text STOP" to end the messages
  • Delete suspicious texts
  • If you get a text purportedly from a company or government agency, check your bill or go online to verify the contact information

The key to staying safe: "Stop before you engage and avoid the urge to respond," according to the Federal Communications Commission.

The Secret Service is investigating how the man who shot Trump got as close as he did

The Associated Press

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating how a gunman armed with an AR-style rifle was able to get close enough to shoot and injure former President Donald Trump at a rally Saturday in Pennsylvania, a monumental failure of one the agency's core duties.

The gunman, who was killed by Secret Service personnel, fired multiple shots at the stage from an "elevated position outside of the rally venue," the agency said.

An Associated Press analysis of more than a dozen videos and photos taken at the Trump rally, as well as satellite imagery of the site, shows the shooter was able to get astonishingly close to the stage where the former president was speaking. A video posted to social media and geolocated by the AP shows the body of a man wearing gray camouflage lying motionless on the roof of a manufacturing plant just north of the Butler Farm Show grounds, where Trump's rally was held.

The roof was less than 150 meters (yards) from where Trump was speaking, a distance from which a decent marksman could reasonably hit a human-sized target. For reference, 150 meters is a distance at which U.S. Army recruits must hit a scaled human-sized silhouette to qualify with the M16 assault rifle in basic training. The AR-15, like the shooter at the Trump rally had, is the semi-automatic civilian version of the military M16.

Former President Donald Trump is rushed offstage during a rally in Butler, Pa.

Trump is fine after an assassination attempt at his rally

The FBI early Sunday identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pa.

The Secret Service didn't have anybody at a late-night news conference where FBI and Pennsylvania State Police officials briefed reporters on the shooting investigation. FBI Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek said it was "surprising" that the gunman was able to fire at the stage before he was killed.

Members of the Secret Service's counter sniper team and counter assault team were at the rally, according to two law enforcement officials. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss details of the investigation.

The heavily-armed counter assault team, whose Secret Service code name is "Hawkeye," is responsible for eliminating threats so that other agents can shield and take away the person they are protecting. The counter sniper team, known by the code name "Hercules," uses long-range binoculars and is equipped with sniper rifles to deal with long-range threats.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said his department and the Secret Service are working with law enforcement to investigate the shooting. Maintaining the security of presidential candidates and their campaign events is one of the department's "most vital priorities," he said.

"We condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms and commend the Secret Service for their swift action today," Mayorkas said. "We are engaged with President Biden, former President Trump and their campaigns, and are taking every possible measure to ensure their safety and security."

Calls for an investigation came from all sides.

James Comer, a Kentucky Republican who is the House Oversight Committee chairman, said he contacted the Service Service for a briefing and called on Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear for a hearing. Comer said his committee will send a formal invitation soon.

"Political violence in all forms is unamerican and unacceptable. There are many questions and Americans demand answers," Comer said in a statement.

U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres, a New York Democrat, called for investigating "security failures" at the rally.

"The federal government must constantly learn from security failures in order to avoid repeating them, especially when those failures have implications for the nation," Torres said.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, posted on X that he and his staff are in contact with security planning coordinators ahead of the Republican National Convention set to begin Monday in Milwaukee. "We cannot be a country that accepts political violence of any kind — that is not who we are as Americans," Evers said.

The FBI said it will lead the investigation into the shooting, working with the Secret Service and local and state law enforcement.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department "will bring every available resource to bear to this investigation."

"My heart is with the former President, those injured, and the family of the spectator killed in this horrific attack," Garland said in a statement. "We will not tolerate violence of any kind, and violence like this is an attack on our democracy."

Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake perform 'Dick in a Box' at Madison Square Garden in 2007.

When you’re lucky enough to have a viral hit song, and it happens to be with a pop music superstar, and then you get a chance to perform it at Madison Square Garden … and you utterly blow it.

It’s a story Andy Samberg just told on The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast on Monday.

Related Stories

Andy samberg reflects on walking away from 'snl': "it was taking a heavy toll on me", justin timberlake seemingly jokes about dwi arrest at boston concert.

Samberg eventually got the opportunity to perform the song with Timberlake at a show in New York, and that’s where things went wrong. Despite Samberg’s familiarity and comfort with doing live performances, concert performers typically use in-ear monitors to follow along with the track because the audience can be rather loud and distracting.

“Justin hit me up. He’s like, ‘Yo, I’m coming to New York. I’m doing Madison Square Garden. We’re going to do it as the last encore.’ And I was like, ‘Fuck yeah! Oh my God. MSG. This is it!’ So, I went there in the afternoon. We did a rehearsal. We come up through the middle of the stage, all dramatic. And it was the first time I’d ever worked with in-ears … [Timberlake] was like, ‘Just so you know, it gets really loud, so you have to have the in-ears. I was like, ‘I’ll be fine.'”

“In rehearsal, it was super calm and chill,” he continued. “I can hear him perfectly. … I watched most of the show, this is fucking incredible, I was like, ‘I can’t believe I’m about to be on that stage,’ it was 10,000 people going crazy.”
