Not only is it home to the world’s largest naval base, but it is also the North American Headquarters for NATO!

Norfolk has a storied history thanks in part to its position along the Atlantic Ocean. Once a strategic military and transportation point, many railroad lines started here. Today, that positioning on the water attracts tourists with many miles of riverfront and bayfront property including beaches on the Chesapeake Bay!

USA Today actually named Norfolk as one of the Top 10 Booming Downtown. A retail and financial boom translates into excellent nightlife, shopping, and culture! Norfolk’s vibrant food scene was developed by talented chefs and ambitious restauranteurs.

Norfolk Botanical Gardens

When it comes to all things nature, the Norfolk Botanical Gardens are one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA. The largest botanical gardens in the state powered by 100% renewable energy, you’ll love walking through the flowers and getting in touch with nature.

The Gardens host over 175 acres to explore with 14 miles of paths to explore. You’ll be able to see beautiful collections of flowers like roses, camellias, and crepe myrtles. With areas like the popular Butterfly House and the 3-acre Children’s Garden, this is one of the things to do in Norfolk with kids!

The Gardens are surrounded by water on three sides making them one of the only gardens in the country that can be accessed by foot, boat, or tram! Once you arrive, you can choose from 60 different gardens to experience: something for every season and taste.

Some gardens focus on one plant or showcase styles from all over the world. Others are perfect for reflective contemplation, yet you can still find others that provide sensory overload with colorful flowers. Try one of the areas where nature is allowed to rule where you can see local birds and wildlife.

We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle with you, as the Gardens do not sell bottled water on the grounds. There are many cold and filtered water refill stations throughout the Garden.

Chrysler Museum of Art

The late art critic for the New York Times, John Russell, once said that the Chrysler Museum of Art boasts a collection “any museum in the world would kill for.” That is why we recommend the Chrysler as one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA.

The Chrysler Museum of Art holds over 30,000 pieces of art between their traveling exhibitions and permanent displays. You’ll find glass, decorative, photography, modern, contemporary, American, European, and ancient collections, with hundreds if not thousands of pieces in each collection.

Current collections that have moved through the Chrysler most recently include the works of Alma W. Thomas, Edward Steichen, and Robert Davis. Most all of the pieces can also be viewed online on the Chrysler’s website!

Families with small children can get their little ones engaged with art with the Chrysler Coloring Sheets. Print or open PDFs of the Chrysler’s works in a coloring app, and then share your creation online with the #ChryslerColors hashtag!

Nauticus National Maritime Center

If you love the ocean or just want to learn about the impressive power of the sea, then the Nauticus will be one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA! Right on the Elizabeth River, the Nauticus provides educational fun and learning for the whole family!

From a distance, Nauticus looks like a toy perched on the largest Naval base in the world. Don’t be fooled by its whimsical exterior. Inside you’ll find more than 150 exhibits including computer interactives, films on a gigantic screen, exotic aquaria, touch pools, and even shark petting!

You’ll enter on 70-foot gangplank over the water to a covered deck. Once you enter into the “Wonder Hall” with skylights, you’ll take the sloped people mover through bulkheads to view the exhibits. Everything is in an open, 50,000 square foot loft space. It even provides balcony views of the harbor below.

Best of all, there’s no admission fee to see it all, making it one of the best free things to do in Norfolk. Expect to spend at least one to two hours here, as there’s a lot to see. You might even want to take some time just to explore the harbor outside!

Hermitage Museum & Gardens

For an eclectic day of history, arts, and creativity, you can go wrong with a visit to the Hermitage Museum and Gardens! One of the best things to do in Norfolk VA, you’ll get a little bit of everything when touring this historic home!

The 20th Century house doubles as a museum with a world-wide collection of art. It is still surrounded by twelve acres of formal gardens and natural woodlands. Originally the summer home of William and Florence Sloane constructed in 1908, today you can tour the grounds and home itself!

 Self-guided tours are available to take with informational pamphlets, but we enjoyed the grounds more with a physical guide! You can take a tour of just the house or just the gardens, but we recommend taking a tour that combines both aspects of the grounds!

The Hermitage Visual Arts School offers classes during the summer that are perfect for beginners to art! Through Ceramics classes, you can learn to use a pottery wheel and make mugs. You can even make your own creations in an intermediate class!

In the Handmade Papermaking and Pulp Painting course, you can learn to make your own paper from upcycled materials! Make greeting cards or a work of art to frame. In Hands-on Garden Workshops, you can learn to plant small trees, shrubs, and even perennials!

American Rover

When you’re a city whose history is rooted in the waterways surrounding it, it doesn’t make sense not to set sail! On the American Rover, one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA, you’ll hit the waves on a 125-passenger sailing schooner.

Take a daytime or sunset cruise that take you over the smooth waters of the Elizabeth River and the Port of Virginia. You can help hoist the sails, take a turn at the helm, or just enjoy the view as your captain points out the attractions on the historic Norfolk Harbor.

The Two-Hour Harbor Cruise sails through the afternoon. Most popular for children and families, you’ll love seeing the sights of Norfolk Harbor in the glittering sunlight. Enjoy the Downtown Norfolk and Portsmouth skylines, Battleship Wisconsin, and private shipyards.

Adults, couples, groups of friends, and companies tend to favor the Two-Hour Harbor Cruise. On this sunset cruise, you’ll learn this is the most romantic way to see the Harbor and the light cascading over the waves. You’ll also enjoy lives music and cold beverages from the bar while you take in the views as night falls.

Harbor Park

Rated by Baseball America as the best minor league stadium in the United States, Harbor Park is one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA. Nested on the Elizabeth River, Harbor Park is home to the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team!

Harbor Park boats 12,067 seats, 20 luxury suites, two TV broadcasting booths, and even a 300-seat restaurant. This stadium may be minor league, but it’s made for the majors! There’s even a picnic area for private parties and concession food and beverages for stadium guests.

Even if you’re not a Baseball fan, there’s still plenty to do at Harbor Park. Harbor Park is also home to Norfolk High School’s football games, notably the championships! Harbor Park is also a bustling concert venue for high profile groups.

Doumar’s

Imagine a world where every single day is Ice Cream Day. That’s what you get when you visit Doumar’s, one of the happiest things to do in Norfolk VA. A fabulous ice cream parlor, Doumar’s is responsible for the waffle cone, having produced the first in the world.

Doumar’s makes ice cream, shakes, and sundaes the way your grandparents remember them when they were young. Like we said, Doumar’s created the waffle cone and they uphold their traditions. You can even see the four iron waffle machine from 1904 on display.

It’s not just about ice cream at Doumar’s. They also make North Carolina-style barbecue, limeades, and hamburgers too. You’ll be tantalized by the juicy, delicious barbecue in the window and eventually order an orange freeze to wash it down.

Doumar’s is so iconic, it has been featured multiple times on Food Network. You might recognized their dishes from shows like Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives hosted by Guy Fieri or on the Rachael Ray Show. You’ll have to stop in to decide if Doumar’s is worth the hype. Spoiler alert: it is.

Mermaid Factory

First of all, with a name like the Mermaid Factory, you have to know you’re in for a good time! One of the favorite things to do in Norfolk VA, you’ll love making crafts and browsing the art at Mermaid Factory!

At the Mermaid Factory, you’re getting a unique gift shop and a “paint your own” art studio all in one! It doesn’t matter if you’re looking for a fun way to spend the afternoon or just looking for a place to pick up that souvenier for a loved one. This is your one stop shop!

Paint a mermaid, handmade of plaster in Coastal Virginia. The ideal blank canvas, you can use acrylic paint, glitter, and other embellishments to decorate your mermaid! Even if you don’t have time to paint your mermaid on that day, you can take home a “to go kit” that double as great gifts or fun rainy-day activities!

Hunter House Victorian Museum

For you history buffs or fans of yesteryear, you can now transport yourself to the Victorian Era. To get a glimpse of another time, visit the Hunter House Victorian Museum, one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA.

The Hunter House Victorian Museum preserves the human stories of the late 19th and early 20th century life through the historic house, which now functions as a museum. Through the collections of the Hunter family, you can look through the lense of their everyday experiences.

It’s not just all history, either. While you can take tours of the house itself, you can also attend afternoon teas, lectures, literary programs, community partnerships, craft shows. Every once in a while, you can attend a Murder Mystery Feature, an immersive experience with actors!

One notable new exhibit is Victorian Pastimes: Games of Yesteryear! Inspired by Hunter House’s extensive puzzle and game collection, you can see the transformation and evolution of the American board game industry. It also shows how gaming in the home became a comfort during times of hardship.

Battleship Wisconsin

We’ve already talked about the Nauticus National Maritime Center. Perched on the largest Naval Base in the world, you would also expect to see some pretty big ships too, right? Well at this extension of the Maritime Center, you can.

Visiting the Battleship Wisconsin is one of the “must” things to do in Norfolk VA. Berthed at Nauticus, the Wisconsin is one of the biggest and final battleships ever built by the U.S. Navy. You can tour and even rent out areas like the main deck, the fan tail, Admiral’s cabin, and even the gun turret!

If a day touring the Wisconsin isn’t enough, you can enjoy Overnights aboard the Battleship! Go and spend the night on the Wisconsin where you can enjoy relaxed, informal conversations with enlisted Navy members and retired officers themselves!

While this is a fun place for families to go together, it might be hard to get the little ones interested in the history. That’s where Bucky the Badger comes in. Complete the scavenger hunt (made of clues about the ship) to find Bucky. He’ll be waiting for you!

Naval Station Norfolk

Naval Station Norfolk is the biggest Naval base in the world. Truly a sight to behold, this is one of the best things to do in Norfolk to get a great idea of our military history.

Naval Station Norfolk supports the operational readiness and preparedness of the US Atlantic Fleet of ships. The base provides facilities and services in order to enable mission accomplishment. It’s a very serious place.

As of late, on site tours have not resumed in light of recent events. You can however take a two-hour narrated Naval Base Boat Tour that departs daily from Nauticus. You’ll start with an entertaining commentary about the Battleship Wisconsin, by which you’ll sail by.

From a distance, you’ll be able to tour one of the world’s busiest seaports. Get those cameras ready to see the Atlantic Fleet made up of destroyers, guided missile cruisers, submarines, aircraft carries, and more!

You’ll also enjoy comfortable seating, a climate-controlled enclosed deck complete with air conditioning, an open-air shaded upper deck, a snack bar, and a souvenier shop as well!

General Douglas MacArthur Memorial

Dedicated to the history of World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, history buffs alike will consider a visit to the General Douglas MacArthur Memorial an absolute “must.” A museum and research facility, this is one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA.

Why Norfolk, you might ask? This is the site where General Douglas MacArthur was laid to rest. The Memorial dedicates itself to preserving and presenting the story of the General himself. Tribute is also paid to the millions of men and women who served alongside him throughout the two World Wars and the Korean War.

Tours can be as involved as you’d like them to be. While a lot of people prefer to have a physical guide in tow, you can experience the exhibits and memorial at your leisure with downloadable guides in the form of a podcast.

If you’d like to engage yourself or your kids a little more, then go to their website and download some of the interactive scavenger hunts. Try your hand at the Artifact Scavenger Hunt, the Douglas MacArthur History Scavenger Hunt, or the World War II Scavenger Hunt.

Coastal Food Tours

When you’re in a new place, it’s always best to try the local cuisine. No matter how tempted you are to stick to familiar chains, you should try something new to satisfy your palate. One of the best things to do in Norfolk VA is let a tour take the food guesswork out of the equation.

There are so many great restaurants serving up traditional coastal dishes to modern, ethnic and sustainable cuisine. Coastal Food Tours offers four different tours throughout Norfolk. The Granby Street tour offers the chance to try eclectic tapas, authentic Morrocan, and the largest desserts in the city.

Hampton Roads Naval Museum

We’ve discussed a lot of the amazing things to do at the Naval Base in Norfolk. That’s why we’ve divided it up into so many entries because there’s so much to do! Also co-operated by Nauticus, you will love visiting the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.

There are only ten navy museums operated by the Naval History & Heritage Command. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum is one of them, making it one of the best things to do in Norfolk VA! It celebrates the long history of the U.S. Navy in the Hampton Roads region of Viriginia.

Permanent exhibits include detailed materials on the Battle of the Chesapeake, the American Civil War in Hampton Roads, the Great White Fleet, World War II, and the Cold War. You can see naval prints, ship models, and underwater archaeology as well as the remains of two Civil War shipwrecks, the USS Cumberland and CSS Florida.

The Hampton Roads Naval Museum also offers guided tours, a lecture series, and educational programs run by an active volunteer corps. Although only available by appointment, you can also access a reference library, archives, and photographic collections of regional naval material.

Town Point Park is a waterfront park area right downtown that hosts several festivals and events throughout the year.

Granby Street is the main downtown thoroughfare, lined with restaurants and bars.

Ghent is a historic district adjacent to downtown. Filled with historic homes, tree-lined streets and beautiful old churches, it is a good mix of residential and business. Colley Avenue and 21st Street are the main shopping and dining areas, with dozens of locally-owned boutiques, shops, antique stores, restaurants and bars. The Naro theater on Colley Avenue is the region's sole movie theater with indie flicks.

Ocean View is Norfolk's beach community, and features relatively uncrowded beaches on the Chesapeake Bay. During the 1950s and 1960s, Ocean View was in its prime and was a major beach destination for families and sailors. During the following decades, the beach community fell into a bit of a slump, succumbing to crime. The city has been turning things around and now Ocean View is on its way to becoming one of the region's most sought-after neighborhoods.

Neighboring cities are Virginia Beach , Chesapeake and Portsmouth .

• Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport ( PHF   IATA ) is another option which may save you money. It is about 20 minutes north of the city in Newport News , Virginia.

Hampton Roads is only second in the state to the suburbs of Washington, D.C. for horrendous traffic, especially during the summer season when many tourists throughout the United States and Canada flock to the beaches of Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Be aware of the alternative of I-664/Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel instead of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, where back ups of more than 40-50 minutes usually occur, long before rush hour even begins.

Route 460 is an alternative to the heavily used I-64 route. 460 extends from Petersburg, VA (just south of Richmond, VA) to Chesapeake (a suburb city to the Hampton Roads area) and you can easily connect from 460 onto the major beltway at the I-664 and I-64 interchange.

Interstate 64 will bring you to Norfolk from points west.

Greyhound runs many buses through Norfolk daily. The 36.84349 -76.27612 3 Greyhound Bus Stop is in downtown Norfolk.

In addition, there are Chinatown buses that run through Norfolk. These buses come from New York City , Boston , Washington, D.C., and other locations in the Northeastern USA.

Norfolk is accessible by private boats via the Intracoastal Waterway, from the Elizabeth River and the Chesapeake Bay . Overnight docking is available at 36.84423 -76.29222 4 Waterside Marina in downtown Norfolk.

Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) operates the bus service in Norfolk. There are many routes in Norfolk, and the service can get you to almost any spot in Norfolk. Most buses run seven days a week early morning to late evening, and are relatively reliable. The fare is $2.00 for a single trip. $4.50 will get you an all-day pass which is usable on most buses, the ferry, and Tide Light Rail. Certain express buses cost more ($4.00 single, $2.00 supplement on a regular all-day pass, $7.50 for an all-day express pass). Bus drivers do not carry cash, so be sure to bring the exact fare for each rider.

Hampton Roads Transit runs a passenger ferry from Portsmouth . Service is seven days a week and runs every half hour with more frequent service during rush hours. The fare is $2.00 one way, and $4.50 for an all-day pass. The ferry's crew does not carry cash, so be sure to bring the exact fare for each rider.

There is also a privately run boat taxi that will take you around the Norfolk and Portsmouth waterfronts. The fare is 7 dollars per person. Call 757-439-8294 and the captain will pick you up anywhere on the waterfront.

By light rail

The Tide Light Rail, a light rail line, extends from the Newtown area at the Norfolk/Virginia Beach border to Downtown Norfolk and Sentara Hospital by the Midtown Tunnel. The Tide runs seven days a week every half hour with service increasing to every ten minutes during rush hours. The Tide is air-conditioned and has free WiFi access.

The fare is $2.00 one way, and $4.50 for an all-day pass which is usable on the Tide, the ferry and HRT buses. All-day passes, multiple-day passes, single ride and multiple ride tickets are sold at vending machines, which are located at every station. The ticket vending machines accept cash, debit cards and credit cards. The light rail is operated on the honor system, meaning that there is no one to check your ticket before you get on the Tide. However, the trains are monitored by uniformed police officers who will check for tickets. Riding the light rail without a valid ticket can cost you a $250 fine.

If you must drive around the city, a good map and/or a local with knowledge of the roads is an absolute necessity. Stay on interstates for as long as possible, for once you leave, any signage is the responsibility of the city, not VDOT, and it shows. If your directions tell you to follow US 58, US 460 or state route 337 through the city, be prepared for a nerve-wracking drive. Directional signage (i.e., US 460 east, turn left) is virtually non-existent, and what signage does exist is more often than not inadequate or even incorrect. If there is a difference between signage and a map, the map is correct. Routes can and do change direction and shoot off onto side streets at a moment's notice, often without any signage advising travelers as to which road to follow. It is much easier than you might think to miss a turn and end up in a dangerous area.

( updated Feb 2018 ) is a popular shopping area for locally-owned boutiques and antique stores. 21st Street and Colley Avenue are the main thoroughfares, but there are plenty of unique stores on the surrounding streets. The Palace Shoppes on 21st Street and Debree Avenue have some great little stores, including a chic women's clothing store, NYFO . Colley Avenue is a pedestrian-friendly shopping and restaurant district where you can find boutiques such as Le Marche and Maison Soleil. There are also quite a few antique stores around Ghent and throughout Norfolk.

The signature symbol of Norfolk is the mermaid, and there are several stores that sell unique mermaid sculptures, pins, and jewelry.

Crime levels have lowered since the 1990s, but is still higher than the national average. Use caution at night, especially alone, as there's been a recent spike in violence in the Granby Street area at night. Make sure to lock your car doors, as car theft is not uncommon.

Fortunately, Norfolk is easy to get around and never all that congested, even if the bridges coming in say otherwise.

No matter the season, a visit to Virginia’s southeastern waterfront city, Norfolk , is a must.

If a spring or fall trip is in your plans, then the weather is pleasant, and it is enjoyable to venture out and explore the area’s natural beauty. There are plenty of weekend festivals to experience during these seasons, and since it is the off-season, crowds are smaller.

If your schedule calls for a summer trip, prepare for days of high humidity and hot temperatures, often in the high 80s and into the 90s.

These days make great days to head to the Chesapeake Bay to take a dip in the water or explore the air-conditioned museums, but it may not be best to explore the Norfolk Botanical Gardens or other similar places.

During the winter months , temperatures are often relatively mild and only occasionally drop below 30 degrees, making Norfolk a great place to explore .

How to Get to Norfolk, VA

Driving to norfolk.

To drive to Norfolk from Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., it will take around 3.5 hours to drive south on I-95 and east on I-64.

Beware; you will have to head through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, which is always backed up and slows your journey down. If you are coming from the south, travel on Route 460 off I-95 at Emporium. Then, t ake Route 460 to I-64 to Norfolk.

Those traveling in from places west like Roanoke, Charlottesville , and beyond need to head east on 64 and follow the signs to Norfolk.

Once you are across the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and past the Naval Station Norfolk, you will want to head south on Tidewater Drive to get to the downtown area of Norfolk.

If you want to take a dip in the Chesapeake Bay, then hop off I-64 at 4th View and enjoy the sand.

Flying to Norfolk

If you want to fly, Norfolk International Airport offers daily flights to many airports up and down the East Coast. United, Southwest, American, Delta, Allegiant Air, Breeze Airways, and Frontier fly in and out of Norfolk (ORF).

Flights from NYC, Washington, D.C., and Charlotte, NC , take about an hour, while those from Miami and Chicago will take about a two-hour flight.

Taking the Bus to Norfolk 

If you are looking for a more economical way to come to Norfolk, then Greyhound offers rides into the city throughout the day from across the country.

Be sure to check the schedule when booking your ride. Some buses may have a transfer in Richmond .

Taking the Train to Norfolk

Norfolk is the end of the line for the Amtrak Northeast Regional line, and the train depot is conveniently located in downtown Norfolk within walking distance from many of the restaurants, hotels, and the Elizabeth River waterfront.

This train runs from Washington, D.C. , to Norfolk daily.  However, if you are coming from other areas, you may need to transfer trains in Richmond.

If you are looking for a local place to visit for breakfast, head to Nick and Karen’s family-owned, family-friendly Pancake House and Grill , which has been serving locals and visitors alike for nearly 60 years in the Wards Corner area of Norfolk.

Each morning at 7:00 AM, they begin serving homemade, cooked-to-order American breakfast classics like their signature pancakes with warmed syrup, omelets, and fresh-squeezed orange juice.

Hungry? Try the American omelet, which features three eggs, four types of meat, peppers, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, and cheese.

Try the lump crab egg benedict, the chicken and waffles, or the biscuits and sausage gravy if you want something a little southern.

Even though the restaurant doesn’t look like much from the outside in its strip mall location, you will find a cozy atmosphere and large portions of a tasty, filling breakfast inside.

Norfolk Botanical Garden

Spend a few hours to the entire day exploring the 175 acres of more than 60 themed gardens at the beautiful outdoor nature retreat, the Norfolk Botanical Garden .

Just minutes from downtown and next to the airport, this remarkable Virginia botanical garden is full of pathways to walk through the colorful gardens, forests, and even a children’s garden with a splash pad that is perfect for cooling off on a hot summer day.

If your visit is timed with the roses, be sure to sniff your way through the rose garden before visiting the butterflies in the butterfly house and climbing the NATO Tower to see the park from above.

When you tire of walking, jump on the tram or boat for a narrated tour. These tours run during the spring and summer and are an excellent alternative for a leisurely exploration of the grounds.

Across the parking lot, the airport overlook is a great place to watch the planes take off and land.

Throughout the year, the gardens host a variety of events.

The seasonal Dominion Garden of Lights, which begins in late November and goes through New Year’s Day, is a fantastic experience as you walk through millions of twinkling lights.

The Grilled Cheese Bistro

The Grilled Cheese Bistro , which began as a food truck, features superb gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches and delicious chimichurri fries dusted with parmesan cheese.

The bistro is just a tiny place with limited seating, but the food is plentiful.

One of the best seats in the house is at the front window, looking out onto Granby Street. Here, you can enjoy your cheese sandwich and people-watch.

For an appetizer, begin with the fried pickle spears that you can dip in a spicy chipotle aioli dressing. Now comes the hard part: choosing which of the 20 grilled cheese sandwiches you want most.

Some of the favorites are the Hangover, which features black truffle mac & cheese and cheddar, the Sunday Morning with bacon, fried apples, a runny egg, and brie, or the Don Quixote, which won ‘Best Grilled Cheese in Virginia’.

Four of these sandwiches are vegetarian, and gluten-free bread and vegan cheese are available.

Explore the Waterside District and Monuments

The Waterside District offers delectable dining, unique shops, exciting nightlife, and a busy festival and event schedule at Town Point Park.

Town Point Park is an eight-acre park along the riverbanks of the Elizabeth River.

From March through December, you will find a variety of award-winning festivals, tall ships to visit, military tributes, and concerts to enjoy.

There are three beautiful pieces of art throughout the park that you should also stop and see.

• Facing the USS Wisconsin, you will find the Lone Sailor Statue. This full-scale sailor sanding with his duffle bags is in honor of the Norfolk-based vessels that have faced tragedies.
• The Armed Forces Memorial along the western side of the park features 20 bronze letters from fallen heroes to their loved ones back home.
• The Homecoming portrays a Navy sailor returning home to his family following sea duty.

The Towne Bank Fountain Park is a fun interactive fountain along the Waterside Marina.

The 28 water-jetted fountains that shoot up to 12 feet are a great spot to cool off on a hot summer day.  At night, the fountains are illuminated. Around the fountains, there are lawn games, shade, and comfortable seating.

Bike, run, or walk along the 10.5-mile Elizabeth River Trail that snakes along the Norfolk waterfront.

You will see interpretive markers, public art, and a challenging obstacle course along the trail. You will also find the Marine Observation Tower in Freemason Harbor, locally known as the Pagoda.

This peaceful spot features a tranquil garden, swaying bamboo, and the perfect place to watch the sun setting over the Elizabeth River.

Doumar’s Cones and Barbecue

Doumar’s Cones and Barbecue has been a Norfolk favorite since 1934. In 1904, Abe Doumar curled his waffle and added a scoop of ice cream to the top at the World Fair.

He then created a four-iron waffle machine that the restaurant still uses today to make their waffle cones.

If your timing is right, you can watch employees outside using the machine and hand-rolling the cones for waiting customers.

Choose between dining inside at the soda fountain counter or at a booth where you can enjoy seeing pictures of how Doumar’s has changed over the years, or stay in your car as the bellhop will come to your vehicle for the old-fashioned curb service. 

Stop by and enjoy a taste of Norfolk’s history.

Cheer on the Home Team at Harbor Park

Harbor Park is home to the Norfolk Tides , an AAA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, between April and September. The stadium is conveniently located in downtown Norfolk.

If staying downtown, you can reach the 12,000-seat stadium by walking from the Waterside District or taking the Tide Light Rail to the stadium.

Once at the park, enjoy a seat on the third-base side, where you can have a great view of the game and watch the action on the Elizabeth River and the railroad and bridge lift as river traffic passes through the area.

D’egg offers guests a place to have the perfect fresh and homemade breakfast or lunch at their downtown restaurant or the Larchmont neighborhood location.

Begin your meal with a frosted glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice (be sure to check out the juicer!).

Then choose between having some of the best house-made corned beef in an omelet with Swiss cheese and tomato slices, cinnamon roll pancakes, or you can’t go wrong with the banana foster French toast.

A side of biscuits and gravy is also delicious but very filling. If you enjoy omelets, they make some of the best, which are always fresh and fluffy.

Don’t miss checking out this small diner; the food is fantastic.

Along the Elizabeth River, you will find Nauticus , a building filled with exhibits dedicated to everything nautical.

The hands-on exhibits allow you to experience what life was like on naval ships, touch sharks and horseshoe crabs, and explore what is packed in all those cargo boxes piled high on the cargo ships leaving port.

Several theaters within Nauticus are both interactive and large-screen. You will find the Hampton Roads Naval Museum on the museum’s second floor.

This small but packed full of information is an exciting stop to make as you explore the local history of the U.S. Navy from the Civil War through the Cold War. The exhibits feature model ships, uniforms, mines, and other historical information.

Usually, retired Navy sailors volunteer throughout the museum and are happy to share their experiences and answer any of your questions.

After passing through the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, head over the gangway to the decommissioned WWII USS Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin is one of the U.S. Navy’s largest and last battleships built and actively sailed the seas during WWII, the Korean War, and Operation Desert Storm.

You can either take a guided or self-guided tour of the USS Wisconsin.

Take time to walk around the ship’s deck before heading inside to see the CPO Lounge, the galley, berths, the dentist’s office, the chapel, the ship’s store, the command center, the brig, etc.

Beware that the stairs are very steep, and when you go down, you must be able to come back up.

In the Norfolk neighborhood of Ghent, you will find the family-owned Pendulum Fine Meats butcher shop.

Here, owners Dana and Dylan Wakefield will greet you with their infectious smiles as you order a freshly made sandwich for lunch. All their meat and produce are from local farms they have personally connected with.

After a lunch of the Shepherd with ground lamb and goat cheese, the Big Tex with smoked brisket and caramelized onions, or sliced chicken, bacon, and Swiss cheese on the Gone to the Birds sandwich, check out the meat case for some delicious homemade sausage or an heirloom cut of steak.

They also have roasted skins for your pet and local bottles of wine.

Set Sail on an Elizabeth River Cruise

From the Waterside area, take to the river and enjoy the sites. You have several options to choose from:

For the quickest voyage, board the Elizabeth River Ferry and travel across the river to Portsmouth. Here you can get off and explore the area, or board again and watch the paddlewheel push you back across as you enjoy the Norfolk skyline.

The Victory Rover Naval Base Cruise offers guests a seat on the 150-passenger boat with an open-air upper level and an air-conditioned lower closed cabin.

From either location, you can enjoy sailing along downtown Norfolk, the Battleship Wisconsin, shipyards, the Portsmouth Coast Guard Station, and the Portsmouth Naval Hospital before reaching the Norfolk Naval Station’s piers.

The narrated cruises run regularly between March and November.

From the Nauticus building, sail along the Elizabeth River and through Hampton Roads Harbor on the three-masted schooner, American Rover .

The 2½-hour narrated cruise on the tall ship is an enjoyable experience. Along the route, you can either join in and get a little hands-on experience with the sails or simply enjoy the sights.

Those looking for something a bit more special may want to take a dinner cruise aboard the Spirit of Norfolk/Spirit of Mount Vernon .

These cruises go along the Elizabeth River year-round as guests enjoy breathtaking views, dine at the grand buffet, and dance to top 40 hits.

Since 1994, the late Alberto Omelas Sr.’s five multi-generational, family-run restaurants have been serving authentic Mexican classic homemade dishes with fresh ingredients.

As you sit in the cozy dining room filled with sombreros and handwoven blankets or, at some locations, the outdoor patio, you will quickly be enjoying freshly cooked chips, homemade salsa, and the famous southeastern Virginia white sauce .

El Azteca is known for some of the best white sauce in the area.

Since their portions are generous, come hungry for cheesy fajita nachos, a shrimp chimichanga packed with good-sized shrimp, or the pollo asado that comes with two large pieces of chicken.

Their grilled foods feature a unique flavor that we have not tasted anywhere else.

When dining at the Norfolk location, head to the red umbrellaed outdoor patio, where you can overlook the Ornelas’ pepper garden, which produces the peppers for their salsas.

Watch a Show at the Wells Theater

Enjoy an evening production at the historic Wells Theater . The early 1900s architecture is beautiful and is a great theater to watch a lively comedy or a serious play.

The theater season runs each year from December through June.

There is plenty that you can do with extra days in Norfolk. You can explore the city’s vibrant coffee scene , check out more restaurants, or go for walks in historical areas.

The Norfolk Botanical Garden is a beautiful outdoor nature retreat just minutes from downtown, next to the airport. This a wonderful place to visit to enjoy a walk in the forest, admire colorful gardens, or bring the kids on a hot summer day to frolic in the splash pad. The more than 60 theme gardens, on 175 acres, feature a wide range of plants that provide a unique experience throughout the year.

The garden was started in the late 1930s and began with the planting of thousands of azaleas and rhododendrons, as well as other trees and shrubs. Although it expanded over the years, what visitors see today is a mature garden, carefully tended to by staff and a large number of volunteers.

This unique property is surrounded by water on three sides, with canals running through the interior. Consequently, boat tours, as well as tram tours, are offered during the spring and summer and provide a leisurely option for exploring the grounds.

Seasonal events are held throughout the year and are very popular, particularly the annual Dominion Garden of Lights , beginning in late November and running until the New Year. The Chrysler Museum of Art is a rare gem, with inspirational collections of art and antiquities, all well laid out in a lovely building, which was renovated in 2014. This free museum has one of the country's leading glass collections. Even visitors who are not interested in art cannot help but be impressed by the beauty and creativity found in this collection.

The museum features European and American painting and sculpture, modern art, contemporary art, photography, decorative arts, and ancient art. From Henri Matisse to Andy Warhol, the museum's permanent collection offers a bit of everything, and temporary exhibitions ensure return visits are in order.

Next door to the main museum is the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio (Perry Glass Studio) , where artists come to work at their craft, and guests can see demonstrations in glass blowing. Classes and workshops are also available.

Conveniently located on the waterfront in downtown Norfolk is the decommissioned WWII Battleship, USS Wisconsin , operated by Nauticus. While the ship is impressive on many fronts, it is one of the largest battleships ever built by the U.S. Navy, and it is an imposing presence on the Norfolk waterfront. Launched in December of 1943, it was also one of the last battleships ever built by the U.S Navy. Wisconsin was active in WWII, the Korean War, and Operation Desert Storm in 1991, and also served as a training ship in between active duty.

Visitors first walk through the Nauticus building, with an extensive and well-thought-out series of displays related to the history and layout of the ship, before walking out onto the deck. Once on the ship, it's possible to walk from one end to the other, climb stairs to some of the upper levels, and explore large sections of the Wisconsin on a self-guided tour. Recent changes have allowed previously closed areas to now be open to the public unescorted. Some of these new spaces include, but are not limited to, the CPO Lounge, Ship's Library, Galley, and even the Brig.

Guided tours are also available. One of the best is the Top of the World tour, which takes visitors to the exterior command center. Another important tourist attraction in Norfolk, the MacArthur Memorial honors Douglas MacArthur, a US general and Chief of Staff of the United States Army, as well as Americans who served in the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, the Occupation of Japan and the Korean War.

The Memorial is housed in a grand old courthouse building, but the complex consists of both the memorial building and a large visitors center located next door. Visitors enter through this building, with a gift shop and several displays, including MacArthur's staff car, and then walk through a courtyard to the courthouse building.

The memorial building contains the tombs of General and Mrs. MacArthur , in the center of the building directly below the huge dome. Galleries on the main and upper level are laid out by year and chronical MacArthur's life and events of the time period.

With all the big name animals, the Virginia Zoo is a definite favorite with locals and tourists. Elephants, giraffes, lions, tigers, rhinos, orangutans, kangaroos, and all kinds of other wildlife can be found here in well-spaced, large enclosures.

Some of the animals can be viewed from elevated boardwalks that allow for a bird's-eye view or an almost face-to-face encounter with a giraffe. Touring the zoo can be a hot excursion during summer afternoons, so visitors may want to arrive in the morning. On the downtown waterfront at Nauticus, the Victory Rover Naval Base Cruises are a great way to explore the area by sea. These narrated tours cruise past the Battleship Wisconsin, downtown Norfolk, shipyards, the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, the Portsmouth Coast Guard Station, and the Norfolk Naval Station, and numerous other sights along the way. The Norfolk Naval Station is the largest of its kind in the world, and this is a rare opportunity to see this type of site.

The 150-passenger boat has an open-air upper level and a closed cabin with air conditioning. Food is available for sale at the snack bar. Cruises operate regularly from March to November, with limited sailings in December.

Docked in downtown Norfolk, not far from Nauticus, is the tall ship, American Rover. This three-masted schooner offers sailing cruises on the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads Harbor, with fantastic views of the city and surroundings. These narrated cruises last an hour and a half to two hours and run from April to October.

Guests can help with the sailing if they want a little hands-on experience, or simply enjoy the ride. Snacks and beverages are sold on the ship, but guests are also welcome to bring their own food on with them if they choose.

Cruises can be booked 30 days in advance, but it is often possible to get tickets at the last minute. Afternoon and sunset cruises are available, and occasionally special sailings are scheduled, including night cruises.

The Hampton Roads Naval Museum is in the Nauticus building, although operated separately, and can be visited as you walk through the main building to board the Battleship Wisconsin. This is a free museum and well worth a stop. The focus of the museum is on the history of the U.S. Navy in Virginia and the local area, from the Civil War through to the Cold War.

The museum is small, but displays are well done, with model ships, uniforms and other apparel, an example of a mine used against German U-boats, and all kinds of historical information.

For an escape from the city, the Hermitage Museum offers a nice retreat, with open green spaces, cool areas for strolling along the waterfront, a rambling house to explore, and unique art displays to admire. This 1895 Arts-and-Crafts-style waterfront house was built by William and Florence Sloane as a summer residence. The house eventually became the Sloane's main residence and underwent some additions over the years. The house now has 42 rooms and has remained relatively unchanged since 1936. Today, the museum showcases not only the old furnishings but works of art, both indoors and out.

On Thursday evenings throughout the summer, the museum hosts a concert series known as Sunsets on the River . Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and set up on the grass beside the river to listen to bands. Dogs on leashes are welcome.

The Children's Museum of Virginia is one of the best things to do as a family when visiting Norfolk. Inside you'll find interactive displays, including a bubble-blowing station, a musical store, a bank, and a grocery store right through to a miniature port. In addition to these displays, kids will also find hours of entertainment in the full-sized tugboat, city bus, and fire truck cab.

One of the museum's main attractions is the incredible train exhibit. On display are eight main trainlines and over 800 trains all beautifully laid out in a miniature setting showcasing the cities of Portsmouth, Roanoke, Richmond, and the area surrounding the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The museum makes learning about the stars and space fun in the newly upgraded Beazley Planetarium. It now boasts of 4K video quality and incredible sound with a new Dolby 7.1 audio system.

1. Chrysler Museum of Art

Nestled in the Ghent district, known for being for the most artistic area of the city, is the Chrysler Museum of Art. 3. The Moses Myers House

The Moses Myers House has been lovingly restored over the years and is known for being one of the first brick buildings to have ever been built in Norfolk.

4. Norfolk Botanical Garden

The Norfolk Botanical Garden stretches over 150 acres and is divided into different sections that include over forty gardens, each with a distinct theme.

During its tenure, the battleship played a role in World War II, the Korean War, and Operation Desert Storm and received five battle stars for its time in World War II and one for its role in the Korean War. The USS Wisconsin was ultimately berthed at Nauticus on December 7, 2000.

Tour A WWII Battleship

The Nauticus is a fascinating maritime museum filled with interesting historical exhibits. The museum showcases gun paraphernalia, sailor artifacts, and unique maritime tools and equipment. The USS Wisconsin , a WWII warship, is also included in the Nauticus complex. The battleship is open for self-guided tours along with guide-led, uniquely focused tours. The 90-minute Guided Command and Control Tour explores intimate areas of the ship. Visit the captain’s cabin, the admiral’s cabin, the navigation bridge, and more. Be prepared to climb up four different decks’ levels while you explore these areas that have, in the past, only been open to high ranking officials. Another interesting tour is the Guided Life in the Engine Room Tour . Travel down seven floors to the bowels of the battleship to explore the powerful engine room. On this tour, you will be required to climb steep ladders and share very close spaces, but the claustrophobic experience is worth the effort.

Entertainment and Dining at the Waterside District

The Waterside District complex houses several restaurants, bars, and The Market– a large open-concept style food court offering drinks, TVs, and other entertainment. It’s a great place to watch football or UFC while enjoying a few drinks with friends. The Waterside District also hosts fun events such as Silent Discos, Drag Brunch, and Mimosa Fest. 

You’ll access gorgeous views of the Elizabeth River and Portsmouth, Virginia, outside the complex, along with a small outdoor entertainment area with cornhole, hammocks, and outdoor seating. Norfolk’s festivals tend to overflow onto Waterside District as it is directly next door to Town Point Park. 

Nauticus and the USS Wisconsin Battleship

Nauticus is a marine museum on the Elizabeth River next to Town Point Park. The complex is also home to the Battleship Wisconsin, a Sailing Center, and the Half Moone Decker Cruise Terminal. The museum is an excellent place to visit with your family, as there are interactive exhibits, STEM and STERN programming, and a theater. 

USS Wisconsin Battleship

The USS Wisconsin (BB-64) is a decommissioned Iowa-class battleship built in 1943. The battleship was a vital tool during World War II, earning five battle stars. Today, the Battleship Wisconsin lives in Downtown Norfolk and is open to the public with guided tours available. The ship holds various events throughout the year, including Winterfest, where the entire battleship is decked out in holiday lights. 

Norfolk River Cruises

Take a City Cruises Norfolk dinner cruise or a tall-ship tour of Norfolk on the American Rover! These tours take you down the Elizabeth River and offer spectacular views of Norfolk and Portsmouth. And if you want to visit another harbor city without the drive, take the Elizabeth River Ferry over to Historic Downtown Portsmouth and explore!

Bars and Restaurants in Downtown Norfolk

Norfolk, VA’s nightlife scene is truly a good time. Across the street from McAruthur Mall you’ll find the Norva, a small concert venue, featuring local and world-renowend music artists. Head to Granby Street, where you’ll find sports bars, pubs, lounges, and nightclubs all within walking distance of one another.

The culinary scene in Norfolk, VA, has been on the rise for a few years now. In 2021, the city partnered with local food blogger Nomarama to produce a video series called City with Bite to highlight Norfolk’s indie food scene.

NEON District

The NEON (New Energy of Norfolk) District is a vibrant area filled with art, culture, and small businesses. Historic Freemason District

The Freemason Historic District mostly a residential area full of history and charm. Located near the Elizabeth River, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The district is home to almost 300 buildings, with over 140 constructed before 1914.

Stroll the cobblestone streets and you’ll find examples of Late Victorian and Greek Revival style architecture from centuries past. Visiting this area will provide a glimpse into both early American history as well as local Norfolk culture.

Housed in a 20th-century brick home, the Hermitage Museum and Gardens is a beautiful property along the Lafayette River. The East Garden overlooks the Lafayette River and is a popular spot for weddings. 

Take a guided tour, check out their event calendar, and attend a workshop! You’ll experience sculptures, paintings, decorative art, and gorgeous gardens. During the warmer months, the museum holds a concert called Sunsets on the River, which offers live music, drinks, and art! 

Chrysler Museum / Perry Glass Studio

Chrysler Museum of Arts showcases over 30,000 items within 50 galleries. Between 2PM and 3PM you can catch a guided museum highlights tour. Other things are going on throughout the day, so check out their calendar of events !

In 2011, the Chrysler Museum of Arts added The Perry Glass Studio, which showcases glassmaking. You can catch a demonstration of the hard work and care glassblowers put into their works of art. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you may be able to experience hands-on glassmaking yourself.

The Virginia Zoo

If you’re looking for something to do in Norfolk, VA with the kids, head over to The Virginia Zoo. The gardens are filled with art, greenery, and beautiful flowers. There is also a butterfly garden and even a kids splash park! Admission for adults is $15 and $13 for kids. There is ample free parking on the grounds.

How to get to Norfolk, VA

Before you head into Norfolk, get ready to hold your breath as you take a dive under the water and travel through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Sorry, there are no windows to see the fish swimming past.

If you are not driving, you can also reach Norfolk by air the Norfolk International Airport or take the Amtrak train, which delivers you to the Norfolk Amtrak Station in downtown Norfolk at Harbor Park.

Chrysler Museum of Art

The Nauticus is a maritime science museum that offers both children and adults a variety of hands-on exhibits, programs, films and activities to keep you busy for most of the day.

Make sure you visit the shark touch tank– the kids will LOVE it!

Nauticus is also home to the Battleship Wisconsin and the Hampton Roads Naval Museum.

Hampton Roads Naval Museum

This free museum, housed in Nauticus, does not need a Nauticus ticket to visit.

During your visit, you will learn more about the 200+ year history of the U.S. Navy, Norfolk Naval Station and maritime center within the Hampton Roads area. Explore the exhibits filled with model ships, uniforms and artifacts that highlight the national maritime tradition in the area.

USS Wisconsin Battleship

• Hours:  Wednesday – Saturday, 10 AM – 4:45 PM, Sunday Noon – 4:45 PM

Choose between taking a self-guided tour around the perimeter of the USS Wisconsin or choose between several guided tours that take you within the ship to the engine room, Admiral’s cabin, Navigation Bridge and Quartermaster’s space. 

Hermitage Museum and Gardens

Situated along the Lafayette River, this early 20th century home of the Sloane family showcases 12 acres of beautiful gardens, along with visual and contemporary art galleries.

MacArthur Memorial

A visit to this museum means visiting the oldest Norfolk museum. Here you will learn about the history of Norfolk Police and view a vast collection of fire and rescue uniforms, medical equipment and fire equipment.

Hunter House Victorian Museum

Learn what life was like for James Hunter, a merchant and banker, and his family during the late 19th and early 20th century. The guided two-floor tour showcases a variety of everyday experiences of the Hunters, their staff and the community that surrounded this Victorian house.

Norfolk Southern Museum

Norfolk Southern Museum is the perfect place to visit for all those train fanatics in your family. Take a seat in the locomotive simulator, see sections of Civil War-era track, learn hand signals and learn a little NS history.

Barry Art Museum

On the campus of Old Dominion University, Barry Art Museum is free to visit and houses a grand collection of glass sculptures, Historic dolls, American modernist paintings and automata.

Parks and Trails Throughout Norfolk to Explore

Norfolk botanical gardens .

Spend a few hours or the day enjoying the largest botanical garden in Virginia. Travel the 14 miles of trails through the 60 gardens featuring roses, camellias, the Children’s Garden and Butterfly House.

During November and December, the gardens turn into a winter wonderland featuring Dominion Energy Garden of Lights . Do not miss this Christmas lights special event. It is worth the drive down from D.C.

Virginia Zoo 

• Address: 3500 Granby St, Norfolk, VA 23504
• Hours: Daily from 10 AM – 4 PM

Stroll through the African exhibit to see the lions, giraffes, and zebras. Then head to watch the kangaroo hop and the prairie dogs peak out of their holes. A walk along the Asian trail means seeing the tigers, red pandas and sun bears.

Just keep in mind that Norfolk loves their red pandas, so expect a crowd anytime they appear.

Cannonball Trail

The Cannonball Trail self-guided tour through Norfolk guides your through 400 years of history as it leads you past the cannonball in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, U.S. Custom House and the Armed Forces Memorial at Town Point Park.

Town Point Park

This open-air park is home to many of the annual festivals that call Norfolk home, as well as a few highlights you don’t want to miss.

TowneBank Fountain Park

Lone Sailor Statue

Facing the USS Wisconsin, this life-sized sailor with his duffle bag stand before plaques that honor the Norfolk-based vessels that have faced tragedies.

Armed Forces Memorial

At the western edge of Town Point Park, the memorial features 20 actual letters cast in bronze from fallen Armed Forces heroes to their loved ones.

The Homecoming 

The Homecoming in Town Point Park depicts a Navy sailor as he returns to his family after sea duty.

Fort Wool 

Take the 2 1/2 to 3-hour Harbor Tour around Fort Wool, a little island at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.   Miss Hampton II Harbor Cruises and Tours  run out of the marina in Hampton.  

Fort Norfolk

This 4-acre area showcases the early 1800’s embankments, barracks and guardhouse of Fort Norfolk that overlooks the Elizabeth River.

Quarantine Road

Behind ODU’s Webb Center at 1301 W 49th St, Norfolk, VA 23529 , you will find the historic marker identifying Quarantine Road. Bike or walk down one of Norfolk’s oldest roads as you take the path many with Yellow Fever took so many years ago.

Doumar’s Cones & Barbecue

• Address: 1919 Monticello Ave, Norfolk, VA 23517

Stop in for lunch and have a North Carolina-style BBQ sandwich and a hand-dipped ice cream cone.

Doumar’s famous waffle cones all began at the 1904 World’s Fair when Abe Doumar curled his waffle and put a scoop of ice cream on top.  He then went on to build the waffle machine, with four irons, that sits outside the restaurant.

If your timing is right and it’s a lovely day, you can watch employees using this machine and the original waffle recipe to cook and hand roll cones for eager customers.

Elmwood Cemetery
