Onboard the Sustainable Airship Bound for the North Pole

At $240,000 for a double cabin, no expense is spared.

OceanSky Cruises airship flying above the North Pole

Back in the 1930s, before the dawn of modern jets, airships were the pinnacle of luxury travel . Cruising at slow speeds and low altitudes of around 1,000 feet, passengers enjoyed stunning views as they floated over the cities and oceans below. By the end of the decade, though, this golden age of blimps was brought to an abrupt end with the widely publicized Hindenburg disaster. Now, Swedish start-up, OceanSky Cruises, is on a mission to bring back airship travel as a sustainable aviation alternative, starting with an expedition to the North Pole.

The company’s CEO, Carl-Oscar Lawaczeck, always had a keen interest in airships. With over a decade’s experience under his belt as a commercial airline pilot, the entrepreneur saw dirigibles as an opportunity to transform the notoriously emission-heavy aviation sector.

“Airships are very light which makes them extremely efficient,” he explains. “You need a fraction of the energy to fly them compared with an airplane as you don’t have to lift hundreds of tons of metal into the air and move at 500 mph.”

For Lawaczeck, while net-zero pledges have good intentions, they are simply not sufficient for tackling the climate emergency. “Today, 80% of the world’s energy is supplied by fossil fuels – we’re decades away from having an abundance of clean energy,” he explains. “That means we need to make a plan on the consumption side. If we’re serious about becoming sustainable, we cannot waste energy on travel and transport, we need to change our habits, reduce our energy footprint and preserve energy.”

This begs the question should people really be flying to the North Pole onboard OceanSky Cruises’ new airship? But the CEO stresses that these luxury expeditions are just the starting point for introducing airships into the commercial aviation industry, which has the potential to preserve huge amounts of energy long-term.

“The challenge with introducing new technology to society is that in the beginning, it’s very expensive because there’s a lot of development costs,” he says. “For example, Tesla introduced the Roadster which is a premium sports vehicle in order to break into the industry. It’s the same with our concept – we have to create a business model that makes sense, to pay for those high costs and the best way to do so is through experiential luxury travel because the uniqueness of the trip means that people are willing to pay a premium price.”

In this way, the CEO believes OceanSky Cruises’ expeditions to the North Pole will appeal to eco-conscious passengers who have a desire to “consume responsibility and help new technologies to flourish which can change the world”.

With a double cabin costing a hefty $240,000, the 36-hour journey certainly doesn’t come cheap. So what can passengers expect?

While the airship itself is still under development, tickets are already on sale and the first trips from Svalbard (a group of islands north of Norway) to the North Pole are scheduled for 2025. Developed by British manufacturing company, Hybrid Air Vehicles , the Airlander 10 will feature eight spacious cabins ensuring the expedition is an intimate affair with just 16 passengers on board.

As you would expect, the interiors are seriously lavish. “When you fly low and slow, you have an unpressurized cabin, which means you can have very large windows,” says Lawaczeck. “Space is one of the factors of luxury. You can go to the bar, lie in bed, visit the restaurant and still watch the beautiful landscape passing by below you.” The CEO believes this level of comfort is a major advantage, likening the experience of traveling onboard an airship to that of a “flying yacht”.

However, persuading passengers to step onboard could be tricky. The Hindenburg disaster was over 80 years ago, but filmed footage of the ill-fated airship bursting into flames above New Jersey is powerful enough to linger in the public’s memory.

This has not deterred the ambitious CEO. “Airships exploding in the 1930s was not something that was common,” he says. “It was something that brought down the whole industry because it was the first filmed catastrophe in the world. Today, we’re not using hydrogen gas, we’re using helium which is inert so it’s impossible to set on fire – you will never see those accidents again.”

What’s more, he continues, airships land at a “bicycle speed” of around 20 mph which is safer than an airplane (a typical 747, for example, lands at around 160 mph). And if you don’t like turbulence there’s good news as flying at a lower altitude and a cruising speed of around 20-70 mph means traveling onboard an airship promises a smoother journey.

Of course, it also takes around five times longer to get from point A to B. But Lawaczeck envisions a future where airships can compete with planes and trains as a mainstream mode of passenger transportation as priorities shift.

“The unit cost of airships will come down for sure,” he says. “How far is very hard to say but according to our calculations we could probably reach the same price point as airplanes. I hope one day that people actually choose airships, because it’s a better experience and there’s an extra bonus that it’s energy efficient. People will always need to travel quickly but I think they will have to pay for the energy they consume and, in my view, energy in the future will be very expensive.”

“ We are proud to launch our unique expedition in partnership with Discover the World who has been at the forefront of bespoke tourism since 1984. Flying with the wind, low and slow… your airship glides serenely across the Arctic Ocean. From the comfort of the luxurious lounge, large windows frame a spectacular view of icebergs and pack ice a few hundred metres below. There’s time to savour the moment. No roar of jet engines – just the gentle hum of battery-powered turbines. Instead of a cramped airliner cabin, your home in the skies is more reminiscent of a superyacht. Only 16 guests share the space in 8 sumptuous staterooms – modern-day explorers bound for the North Pole…

Flying to the North Pole in an airship

It’s been done before. The Norge flew across the top of the world almost 100 years ago. But the Golden Age of airships came to an abrupt end in 1937 following the Hindenburg disaster. So, why the revival in airship travel now? To put it simply, the time is right. Our exciting new airship expeditions with OceanSky Cruises harness innovative technology to offer aviation a safe, sustainable future. By joining one of these pioneering trips, you will be at the forefront of a new era in low-energy, zero-emission flying. And you will also make history by being one of the first to land at the North Pole in an airship. It’s going to be an incredible journey!

What are modern airships like?

OceanSky Cruises are developing new state-of-the art airships designed to fly for days and access the most remote and unexplored parts of the world. With no need for runways or airports, they can land in far-flung places with the lightest of footprints. Unlike a passenger jet, an airship’s cabin is not pressurized, which allows for large windows offering panoramic views – especially from the low altitudes at which they operate. You can also expect a luxurious experience onboard – 8 staterooms (some with viewing platforms), a sumptuous lounge and superb cuisine specially designed to suit the journey.

What is it like onboard the airship?

The interior of OceanSky’s airship offers a similar level of space, comfort and service as you would find on a luxury yacht. The airship is 98m long and 50m wide, and boasts a large communal lounge with bar, dining area and panoramic windows. There are 8 cabins on board, each sleeping up to 2 people and featuring an ensuite bathroom. Exquisite dining is all part of the experience and you’ll be treated to a superb menu designed by Jesper Vollmer.

North Pole Airship Expedition

7 days (including 48-hour North Pole journey) | 20 June and 11 July 2025 or 2026 | from £87,000 per person*

Departing in June and July, the seven-day North Pole Airship Expedition operates from Longyearbyen in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard.

Our polar Travel Specialists will tailor-make a programme of optional pre- and post-expedition activities for you, that might include kayaking and wildlife tours. When weather conditions are right, you’ll board the airship to embark on your flight to the North Pole and back. At the start of this unforgettable 48-hour journey, you’ll be captivated by the sight of Spitsbergen’s glacier-fringed coastline drifting beneath you. Perhaps you’ll glimpse whales feeding in the bays below, or even spot walruses or a polar bear.

*price is based on 2 sharing a stateroom, and excludes international flights

As your airship floats out across the Arctic Ocean there will be ample time to relax in the opulent lounge, enjoy a cocktail and chat with fellow guests over a delicious meal cooked using local ingredients and paired with fine wines. During summer, the midnight sun offers endless daylight, so you will be able to admire the intricate patterns of Arctic pack ice passing beneath you late into the night. Retiring to your private cabin for two, with its shower and bathroom, deeply angled windows ensure you never feel detached from the breathtaking wilderness. Comfortable beds with eco-mattresses ensure you get a good sleep before arriving at the North Pole the following morning.

Slowing to a cycling pace, your airship gently touches down on the frozen white expanse of the High Arctic. Stepping onto the ice, you will become one of the privileged few to have reached the North Pole – and you will have done it using the latest ecologically sustainable, lighter-than-air technology. During approximately six hours at the North Pole, your expedition leader will help you explore the pristine and surreal surroundings before the 19-hour return flight to Svalbard.

Exploring Svalbard

As polar specialists we can create a personalised programme for your time on Svalbard that dovetails perfectly with your airship flight to the North Pole. Svalbard is a spectacular and fascinating place, combining the extraordinary landscapes and wildlife of the High Arctic with the history and culture of a polar outpost. Your base on Svalbard is Longyearbyen, the world’s northernmost town, located on the shores of Adventfjord and surrounded by mountains and glaciers. Although the town has hotels, restaurants and shops, it doesn’t take long to leave the ’suburbs’ and enter untouched Arctic wilderness.

Explore in and around Longyearbyen

Hike along the shoreline and across tundra

Marvel at the flora and fauna

Join a boat trip to marvel at the magnificent bird cliffs

Is airship travel safe?

Back in the old days, airships were filled with highly-flammable hydrogen. But now it’s helium – inert, stable and non-flammable – that inflates the envelope of modern airships. They are also constructed with stronger, lighter materials and coated with bullet-proof Kevlar. Airships take off and land at about the speed of a bicycle; they have four independent engines and don’t need a runway in the event of an emergency. They also fly low and unpressurised, so there is no risk of rapid decompression. Like all forms of commercial aviation, OceanSky’s airships will undergo extensive trials and be regulated by stringent certification requirements.

What if bad weather affects my airship flight?

Our trips run in June and July during the height of the Arctic summer, when the weather is at its most settled. By building in extra days to the overall itinerary, there’s flexibility to embark on the North Pole flight when weather conditions are optimal. Several features of OceanSky’s Airlander also allow it to operate in less-than-perfect conditions. For take-off and landing, the airship is designed to tolerate wind conditions similar to commercial airliners. It is not restricted by cross-winds (an airship can simply turn into the wind and take off in any direction, since no runway is required) and it can also withstand lightning strikes and icing, similar to other aircraft. By flying slowly at low altitude, modern airships can safely navigate above or below clouds.

This is the first step towards truly sustainable aviation. As with any pioneering form of travel, it’s expensive and experiential to begin with, but the potential is huge. The North Pole is just the beginning. It was chosen to demonstrate how airships can take intrepid travellers to the remotest places with minimal impact on the environment. Where could it lead next? Well, OceanSky already have plans for a Capricorn Voyage in Africa, traversing the arid wilderness of the Namib and Kalahari. But the vision for airship travel is bigger and bolder than exclusive expeditions for the lucky few. OceanSky believe that, in the future, airships could be ’trains in the sky’ – a new kind of airline offering the wider public a viable way to travel and explore that doesn’t demand huge amounts of energy.

Keep an open mind when booking this event. Overall, I like it and my teenage daughters were apprehensive at first but they ended up loosening up and having a good time and wanting to take photos with the entertainers. The staff are nice, very attentive and courteous and the entertainers are happy, good performers and really want you to have a good time. Food was good. It is 100 baht for a photo with each entertainer which tbh, is worth it.

On December 7, 2019, Princess Cruises honored two pioneering women of the U.S. Space Program: Captain Kay Hire, and engineer Poppy Northcutt, who served as the godmothers, and officially named Sky Princess. Captain Hire began her 30-year NASA career as a mechanical systems engineer, helping to launch more than 40 space missions. Then, as an astronaut, she logged 700 hours in space, flew over 12 million miles, and orbited the earth 475 times. Poppy Northcutt served as the first female mission control engineer when NASA made history with its mission to the moon. When the crew of Apollo 13 became stranded in their service module, it was her team’s calculations that brought them home safely – a feat of heroism that earned the entire mission operations a Presidential Medal of Freedom Team Award.

Rates can vary widely by room type and season. "We Paid" is intended to give a general sense of price, but you might find considerably different rates for your trip.

When we book, we aim for the optimum season for the destination, but we avoid holidays and major public events, when prices are highest. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic.

We take advantage of promotional rates, when possible. That means the rate you see above might have included other benefits, such as spa or meal credits.

  • Most sustenance is included with your stay aboard Viking Sky, but adding on a meal at The Kitchen Table is a must. The experience begins with a shore excursion to collect ingredients for your hyper-local feast that you’ll help prepare back on board the ship.
  • There’s no need to leave the ship for a bit of Scandinavian-inspired pampering. Simply head for the Nordic Spa to soak up classic sauna, steam and Snow Grotto experiences, or indulge in a Swedish massage to work out those travel kinks.
  • Viking strives to make the cruise experience as stress-free as possible, which means no assigned seating at dinner, open dining hours for breakfast and dinner at The Restaurant (the ship’s main dining room), and gratis wine pairings with your meals.
  • Those accustomed to the suite life back on land will find the Owner’s Suite anything but wanting. In addition to the standard heated bathroom floors and private veranda, the 1,448-square-foot accommodation boasts a private library and wine collection curated by Viking chairman Torstein Hagen, a private ocean-view dry sauna and three bathrooms.
  • Located on Deck 2, Torshavn is the ship’s moody cocktail bar where tipples, live entertainment and after-dinner dancing are the order of the day. Be sure to ask about the bar’s tasting classes, where you might learn how to pair indulgences such as brown spirits and chocolate.
  • While there is a noticeable lack of large-scale after-dinner entertainment on the Viking Sky itinerary, many cruisers don’t mind the evening quiet, especially when an early night is the best way to wake refreshed for a day full of shore excursions.
  • All sailings include one complimentary shore excursion per port of call, but additional offerings are available as add-ons. While a walking tour of a particular city may be gratis, a cooking class, kayaking excursion, or guided museum visit may be available as a paid upgrade.
  • Though size is a factor when choosing a stateroom, so are the added perks. Upgrading to a suite affords you immediate access to your stateroom upon embarkation, early booking of shore excursions and priority spa and dining reservations.
  • A full fitness facility is available for those looking to squeeze in a workout between all those fantastic meals, while the quarter-mile jogging track around Deck 2 lets you soak up sea breezes without skipping a beat.

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Matryoshka doll painting

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Superb Service & Dining

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

Moscow Day Trip

We're extremely interested in a cruise next summer on the Soujourn which stops in St. Petersburg for almost three days. Seabourn lists two different "day trips" to Moscow via high speed train. Having previously cruised to St. Petersburg, we really don't want to stay there for three days and a side trip to Moscow would be the highlight of the cruise. Has anyone taken this excursion?

I have been to Moscow many times, but never as part of a cruise. Was recently on a Baltics cruise and spoke to people who had - it takes it out of them as it was a super long day. In fact they got home so late that third day they slept in and had "sea day" at port.

There is so much to see in Moscow, I it should be a land trip and there are many nice hotels on which you can stay. It is really a 3 day experience. Having said that, if there is not much else you want to see in St Petersburg, and you don't think you will get back to Russia by land, it is a very interesting city with much to do. You will skim the surface, but will enjoy. I would only do if you had limited or no plans in St Petersburg - especially the day after as you return very late at night.

If you do not go, there are many not so well known things to do in SP. The Russian Museum is fascinating for example as is Yuspov Palace. The military museums and sights are interesting as well.

Whatever you decide to do you will have a great time!

Doing a "day-trip" from St. Petersburg to Moscow and back can work well. We did that trip in 2008 with Crystal. Having sailed in the Greek Islands in 2006 with Seabourn on our first cruise, I am sure that the quality would be similar with your cruise line. One change now would be the use of the high-speed train in place of flying back and forth as we did in 2008. Here are more details to consider:

Having three days in St. Petersburg allows enough time to do BOTH in seeing Moscow and going to other places near where your ship is docked. Only a few of the better lines, such as Seabourn and Crystal, have that type of schedule. We used in 2008 the main schedule airline, Rossiya Russian Airlines, for this trip. That line is now part of Aeroflot. The train trip takes long, but lessens some of the added time needed going out to the airport and the train gets you closer to the central part of Moscow.

I'll offer up some added background, along with various pro/con factors for your consideration. My wife thought it was lots of money, but she viewed it as very much worth it after completing the trip as a "once in a lifetime" experience.

CON FACTORS : It's a long day! Leave the ship about 8 am (greeted by a small welcoming band dockside); lots of driving and traffic; get back by return flight to the St. Petersburg airport around midnight and back to the ship a little before 1 am. The cost through Crystal Cruises was not cheap, but it does include everything, including all bus transfers, your jet air flights on regularly schedule commercial airlines, lunch on the bus, dinner in a nice/historic club/restaurant, admissions, etc., etc. Moscow is a super large city of about ten million people. There has been huge growth in the suburbs of this city during the past decades or so. Traffic and time from the airport to the main downtown takes about an hour. You can get a good feel as you travel into town through the coach windows about the “new Moscow” with its suburban growth, commerce, advertising, capitalism, etc.

PRO FACTORS : Moscow has its unique history, sights and sites, from Ivan the Terrible up through Lenin, Stalin and the new Russian leaders of today. After a long ride in from the airport on the outer edge of this large metro areas of 17.3 million (with 10.5 million in the city), we stopped at a new hotel for coffee/tea/break. Then, we rode the Moscow subway and saw a couple of their very unique and artistic stations. Stalin at the time called these stations “People’s Palaces”. This Moscow Metro was first opened in 1935 and now has 182 stations, 12 different lines,187 miles of routes and carries seven million passengers each weekday. It’s the world second busiest subway system. This subway ride offered a good sampling of real life for people who live and work in Moscow. We then saw more key places enroute, including the home of the Bolshoy Ballet, KGB Headquarters, various Stalin era buildings, etc. Then we went to the Kremlin with its 19 historic towers. WOW, we were really there!

Inside the Kremlin are three key “super stars”. First, was the State Armoury with its spectacular Faberge Eggs, plus so many carriages, crowns, gowns, jewels, etc. Second are the various historic Cathedrals within the Kremlin Walls, plus the Tower Bells, Icon art, etc. This includes the Cathedral of the Annunciation built in the 1480’s and having such spectacular wall murals and icons. Third, was the Great Kremlin Palace with its spectacular reception halls, inlaid wood floors, gold and more gold, fancy ceilings, etc. The Czars were crowned here, plus the current heads of the Russian government, etc. You might check whether your cruise trip will take you insider here. The size and scale of these areas are hard to describe in words, let alone reflect and capture the history that has happened in some of these rooms dating back to the late 1400’s. We have seen lots of great palaces all over Europe, but this is something above and beyond for the eyes, heart and brain.

Then, we saw more building inside the walls of the Kremlin. We went outside of the Kremlin Walls and walked next door to adjoining Red Square, seeing St. Basil’s and the re-done Gum Department Store. Red Square is so historic, especially having grown up seeing the military May Day parades there, visuals of Lenin’s Tomb, etc. Have the words “spectacular” and historic been used too much? Maybe, but it fits for many of these unique places. St. Basil’s was built 1555–1561 on the order of Ivan IV (the Terrible). It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower (266 feet tall) in 1600 inside the Kremlin Walls. To be able to “CONTRAST” and compare Moscow and St. Petersburg during these three short days adds to the benefits of seeing both of these great Russian capital cities. Each is a very different and special city.

We finished with dinner in the Central Writers’ Club, a one hundred years old mansion made into a restaurant with crystal chandeliers, rich wood panelling, fireplaces, and antique balustrades. Finally, we drove back to the airport, passing many of the new suburban commercial development with big box stores and luxury housing, etc.

Is one day too short and limited? YES! You can, however, do and see lots in only that one short day. You get a small sampling above. How often do you get to Russia? The Cold War might not come back in full force, but there are going to be increasing and revisited tensions in future years involving Russia and getting access there. The major cruise lines have done this tour many times and has its details down well and timing perfected. Let me know any questions, thoughts or reactions.

Here are a few picture highlights of what we saw in Moscow. Have more to share, if you would like added views for the great potentials there.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Walking on the famed Red Square of Moscow:

This is the interior for Moscow's most historic church, Assumption Cathedral or the Cathedral of the Dormition, inside the Kremlin walls. It is the mother church of Muscovite Russia. The church stands on Cathedral Square and was built in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotele Fioravanti. It was erected on the spot of an older 14th century cathedral of the same name:

The famed KGB Headquarters in Moscow where many entered and did not exit (alive) during the 1950’s and 1960’s:

Kazan Cathedral sits on the northeast corner of Red Square in Moscow. The current building is a reconstruction of the original church which was destroyed at the direction of Joseph Stalin in 1936. The original church was erected as a shrine in the early 1630s to mark the city's liberation from the Polish aggressors. After the Soviet Union’s fall, this was the first church to be completely rebuilt. The cathedral's restoration (1990–1993) was based on the detailed measurements and photographs of the original church:

Here is a small sampling of the Kremlin Royal Treasures of the Czars: Eggs & Jewels:

St. Basil's sits on Red Square and dates back to its 1555-61 construction on the orders of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV). It commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan and marks the geometric center of the city. This location has been the hub of its growth for Moscow since the 14th century. It was the tallest building in Moscow until the completion of the Ivan the Great Bell Tower in 1600. This church was near destroyed in the 1930’s when Stalin was in control.:

We did it with Regent several years ago. We were also docked in St Petersburg for 3 days. We flew to Moscow though. Not sure how long the high speed train takes, but until you get to the airport, through security and your flight leaves it may be the same. It was a great day. I wouldn't have wanted to miss it. We got back about 11 and they had a special dinner waiting for those of us on this excursion. Really did get to see the highlights of Moscow as well as a fabulous lunch.

I did the day trip to Moscow several years ago with Seabourn. Normally, I would never undertake such a grueling day but it was my third time in St. Petersburg and I had seen everything I wanted so I thought why not? It turned out to be a highlight of the trip. Yes, it was a long day but who cares. The day is just as long if you stay on board. Seabourn handled the whole thing extremely well from the flights to the guides to the meals to the private sightseeing. We saw and experienced so much in that one day that I felt I had been there for two or three. Is it better to go and spend a few days? Of course! But if that is not an option and you're not sure if you'll ever get there on your own I think it's a great thing to do.

Everything I said though is only for those who have been to St. Petersburg before. If it's your first time you'll need every minute of those three days there to see even a fraction of what there is to see.

Thaks for all the great information. We will be on the Sojourn late next summer in the Baltic. We have been to St Petersburg and are thinking we might do this if offered. Sounds great, hope we get the chance!

I can't thank you all enough for your quick and in depth responses. As much as I would like to take an extended tour of Moscow/Russia someday, I've learned that you never know what the future holds and not to let a good opportuity pass you by. The overall positive reviews and amazing pictures have sold us. While I realize we might be exhausted from the long day, it sounds well worth it.

Glad we have helped to "SELL YOU". You are summarizing and approaching things correctly. See "IT" while you can and are close. Here are a few more pictures to help you get ready for the amazing sights you will experience there in Moscow.

Like you, we did the Moscow trip after a couple of trips to St Petersburg. Wouldn't have missed it for the world- totally different feel from SP, or anywhere else in the world. For those of us who lived through the cold war, it brought to life the spy novels I have read all my life.

Could you please send more information on your Moscow trips - we would like to do a seperate trip to Moscow after the cruise. Any leads or information would be appreciated.

We were on the Sojourn July/August 2012. We did a private day trip to Moscow using SPB tours via high speed train on our 2nd day in ST P. They picked us up from the ship around 5:30 am and dropped us off at the rail station, and we met our tour guide and a driver for the two of us at the Moscow rail station. It took 4 hours each way for the train, but it went from city center to city center, and it seemed to go by relatively quickly. We had a great time in Moscow- seeing the highlights as described on the tour itinerary, and we could customize it. There seemed to be little English spoken in Moscow, people not as friendly as in St P, and the traffic was horrible. I was actually glad to get back to St P( at around midnight).

It was a busy day, but that didn't stop us from a full day of touring before and after the Moscow trip on private tours by SPB tours. It was quite expensive, but I'm glad we went- and I really have no desire to go back.

Years ago we did a land tour of Russia, so got to spend about 5 days in both Moscow and St Petersburg. I actually like Moscow more than St Petersburg. We have also done a Baltic cruise on Seabourn, so have had another 3 days in St Petersburg, so NEXT time we will certainly do the day tour to Moscow. I would also prefer to do it the way they do now, by train, would have been dubious about a Russian "domestic" flight. ;)

I could've sworn I'd responded to this thread earlier:confused:

I'd take my chances on a domestic flight with their new fancy Boeing planes (or even an odd Ilyushin). The train was a less than stellar experience. Four hours each way in a straight backed non reclining seat. Some of them had another passenger about 24" in front of you, facing you - so no sticking your legs out. Further they didn't seem to believe in AC so the car just got hotter and hotter. Moscow itself was great, I found it particularly amusing that right across from Red Square they had a capitalist pig-dog mall filled with luxury American and European brands.

Following is a description and personal review of the Seabourn Cruise - St. Petersburg -shore excursion: “MOSCOW BY TRAIN & THE MYSTERIOUS KREMLIN”

On June 18, 2012 – my wife and I participated in the Seabourn Pride’s Moscow Excursion along with 12 other passengers and 2 guides. Most of us had room service breakfast at 4:30am, crossed the flooded river outside Russian Customs and met the bus @ 5:30am for a transfer to the St. Petersburg Train Station. The high speed train (mostly at 130-140 MPH) left the station at 6:30am and arrived in Moscow at 10:15am. The train ride was uneventful and a box snack was provided.

In Moscow, we were met by the local guide and a full size bus. We drove into and around central Moscow for about 30 min. – buildings and sights are interesting, but do not compare to the historical & decorative buildings of St. Petersburg. We then took a Metro (subway) ride in Moscow. The metro is interesting, but not as impressive as St. Petersburg’s. (You will notice that throughout this review, I state that St. Petersburg is better than Moscow, which is true of everything except for the Kremlin, which holds its own and should be the main purpose of this excursion.) (Seabourn states that the Kremlin is closed on Thursday – THEREFORE, DO NOT TAKE THIS TOUR ON THURSDAY.)

After driving around Moscow again to view several areas from the bus, we visited the Kremlin , which is a very large wall enclosed fortress with hundreds of buildings, churches, monuments, fortress walls with many towers/etc. After a long walk (many long walks to come) at an OLYMPIC SPEED PACE (You will walk fast to see everything in the allotted time). We started with the “Armory” museum which was very good and I do not normally like museums. There are rooms with royalty gowns, Czars’ crowns, royalty carriages, suits of amour and weapons, jewel covered bibles, Faberge Eggs, etc. – basically Royal Treasures. From here we walked to the “Churches Square” with It’s 17 churches. We entered the Annunciation Cathedral where most all the Czars were crowned. Outside - took pictures of the largest BELL in the world that has never been rung and the largest CANNON that has never been fired. Took pictures of government buildings and the President’s Palace.

At about 1:45pm, we walked back to the bus for a short ride to a very prestigious restaurant (and it was) for a four course late-lunch with an excellent French Bordeaux.

After lunch, we visited the very large Red Square @ 3:15pm for a tour of “St. Basil’s Cathedral” which was beautiful and very interesting with its many Onion Domes – but I liked St. Petersburg’s “Church on the Spilled Blood” better. We were able to see the front of the Lenin’s Tomb , but it was closed. At the other end of the Square was a beautiful museum and very nice smaller church where recorded services were being played.

We had 45 min. on our own to walk around the Square and after another long fast walk back to our bus, we proceeded to the train station for a 7:45pm departure back to St. Petersburg. A snack and drink was provided. Arriving in St. Petersburg at 11:30pm, with the sun just beginning to set (the mid-night sun), we proceeded to the ship – 18 hour tour/ 21 hour day.

Summary: Is the tour worth $1,000 per person – only if it is important to see Moscow once in your lifetime. See St. Petersburg first ; tour has extensive walking at a very fast pace; you will be going to Moscow to see the Kremlin which is historical and beautiful.

Ukraine war latest: Iran transfers 'more than 200 missiles' to Russia; Putin 'cocky and smug', says CIA chief

The US has warned of "dramatic" Iranian escalation - after reports emerged that short-range missiles had been sent from Tehran to Moscow. Putin was branded both "cocky" and "smug" by the CIA director during a joint security conference with the head of MI6.

  • Live reporting by Ollie Cooper

We're pausing our live coverage - thanks for following along.

We've spent much of the day discussing Iranian-Russian relations - with Sky News being told by a Ukrainian source that hundreds of short-range ballistic missiles have arrived in Russia from Iran.

Kyiv expressed concerns - just a day after Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed calls for the West to supply Ukraine with weapons that could strike airfields on Russian soil.

On the battlefield, Moscow reported further advances in the east of Ukraine, while Kyiv continues to hold a significant portion of the Kursk region in Russia

We'll be back tomorrow with more updates on the Ukraine war.

Funerals for those killed in a massive Russian attack on a military academy in Poltava have taken place today.

More than 50 people were killed in Tuesday's attack, which the country's first lady described as a "stunning tragedy for all of Ukraine".

Russia's defence ministry said the strike targeted soldiers and foreign instructors.

Iran's alleged supply of ballistic missiles to Russia is worrying, our   military analyst Sean Bell   says.

Bell says Russia "tends to use older weapons" but unlike Ukraine it "has the volume".

"Both sides are struggling for weapons and at the moment Russia has ramped up its domestic production but it desperately needs weapons from Iran and North Korea," he says.

The delivery reportedly contains short-range ballistic missiles.

"They will give Russia more volume of missiles but it will also mean Russia's limited supply of its own Iskander missiles can now be focused on long range targets - that's very worrying," he says.

"We [also] understand that Russian soldiers have been in Iran doing training for the last few weeks."

Speaking on the UK's announcement yesterday that it will supply more than 650 missiles to Ukraine, the military expert says the challenge will be the need for caution about providing the war-torn country with the most modern weapons in case they fall into Russian hands.

He adds: "Ukraine desperately needs that technology and volume, so that's the big challenge at the moment."

More from the directors of the CIA and MI6, who were speaking at the FT weekend festival earlier today.

During the event, Bill Burns discussed the prospect of nuclear war erupting at the start of the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Speaking alongside the head of MI6 he said: "There was a moment in the fall of 2022 when I think there was a genuine risk of a potential use of tactical nuclear weapons.

"The [US] president sent me to talk to our Russian counterpart, Sergei Naryshkin, at the end of 2022 to make very clear what the consequences of that kind of escalation would be," he added.

"I don't think we can afford to be intimidated by that sabre-rattling or bullying [but] we've got to be mindful of it."

Russia has frequently threatened nuclear war since the start of the conflict in February 2022.

Iran has transferred short-range ballistic missiles to Russia for its war in Ukraine, a Ukrainian source has told Sky News.

The move - reportedly involving more than 200 missiles - would mark a significant ramping up of Iranian military support to Moscow, if confirmed.

Bill Burns, the director of the CIA, was asked about the claim when he appeared at an event in London with his British counterpart, Sir Richard Moore, the head of MI6.

He did not confirm the allegation, but said: "Should Iran ship ballistic missiles... it would be a dramatic escalation of the nature of the defence partnership."

The Ukrainian source said a Russian ship delivered the Fatah-360 missiles - each with a range of more than 70 miles - to a Russian port in the Caspian Sea.

It's anticipated that the munitions will now undergo tests.

The Russian military will then conduct training on them - before they are launched against Ukraine.

Iran has long been feared of having supplied ballistic missiles to Russia.

The Iranian regime has already supplied large quantities of attack drones as well as artillery shells and ammunition, helping to bolster Russian firepower on the battlefield to devastating effect.

Ukrainian drones hit a munitions depot in the Russian region of Voronezh overnight, a Ukrainian security source has told the Reuters news agency.

The attack, which took place last night, was on what Ukraine believed to be a depot used to transfer weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.

You can see the Voronezh region highlighted on this map - bordering both the Belgorod and Kursk regions.

"At this moment, there are still four pockets of a powerful fire observed at the site, as well as the unceasing detonation of munitions," the source said, adding that the attack was carried out by the Ukrainian SBU security service.

Alexander Gusev, the Russian governor, said this morning "explosive objects" had detonated after a fire in the region's Ostorogozhsky district.

He said there had been no casualties, but that a state of emergency had been declared locally, with several hundred people evacuated and a major road closed.

Our security and defence editor Deborah Haynes   was there for us - and noted one particularly interesting part of the discussion between Sir Richard Moore and Bill Burns...

Vladimir Putin was branded both "cocky" and "smug" by the CIA director during a joint security conference with the head of MI6 run by the Financial Times.

You can watch Bill Burns and Sir Richard Moore discuss the Russian president here...

Ukraine's foreign ministry has expressed concern over reports that Iranian short-range ballistic missiles have been transferred to Russia.

In a statement sent to journalists, the ministry said the deepening military co-operation between Tehran and Moscow was a threat to Ukraine, Europe and the Middle East.

It also called on the international community to increase pressure on the two countries.

CNN and the Wall Street Journal both reported yesterday that Iran had already transferred missiles to Russia, citing unidentified sources, although how many was not yet clear.

However, Reuters  reporting  from August suggested that Russia was expecting "hundreds" of the Fath-360 close-range ballistic missiles - and that Russian military personnel were being trained inside Iran on how to use them.

Earlier this morning, we reported that the US would view this move as dramatically escalatory (see 8.12am post).

You can also read about what Iran gets out of its dealings with Russia in our 10.30am post.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said yesterday Ukraine now controls more than 1,300sq km in the Kursk region.

The Ukrainian president also suggested that the invasion has resulted in about 6,000 casualties among Russian forces so far.

But how has that impacted the war inside Ukraine?

Analysts have suggested that Russia has moved some troops from the frontlines, but has not committed the crack forces required to throw Ukraine off its soil thus far.

Ukraine's top military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi told CNN that the operation in the Kursk region was working and that there had been no Russian advances on a key sector of the eastern front inside Ukraine for six days.

"Over the last six days, the enemy hasn't advanced a single metre in the Pokrovsk direction. In other words, our strategy is working," he said.

Mr Syrskyi said the military had also noted a decrease in shelling and the intensity of the Russian offensive in other sectors.

'Significant tactical achievement'

Speaking at a joint security conference with the head of MI6, CIA chief Bill Burns said the invasion marks a "significant tactical achievement".

However, MI6 boss Richard Moore said it was too soon to say how soon Kyiv could hold the territory.

The national picture...

When it comes to the national picture, Russia is pressing on with its goal to take over the east of the country.

They are slowly inching forward towards the city of Pokrovsk - just northwest of Donetsk - which provides critical rail and supply links for the Ukrainian army.

Losing the city could put additional Ukrainian cities at risk.

This morning, Russia's defence ministry claimed Moscow's troops have claimed the village of Kalynove -just lies southeast of Pokrovsk.
