Passafire’s single, Keepin’ On, serves as a mission statement for the veteran rock-reggae outfit as they continue to forge ahead through their second decade of reimagining the boundaries of the current rock-reggae landscape. Unflinchingly optimistic, Keepin’ On shows off what Passafire does best: expertly blending the macro/political and the micro/personal.

The rock-steady anthem weaves together Passafire’s take on global warming, economic uncertainty, and technology’s threat to personal privacy with the band’s dedication to survival, intent on thriving by any means necessary.

“We are very grateful to be where we’re at with awesome fans that sustain and support us,” said Passafire’s bassist Will Kubley. “But every band wants to get to the next level” quickly pointed out lead guitarist/lead singer Ted Bowne. “We keep reaching new milestones and having new meaningful events, but we still have many ambitions we want to achieve. So we’ve got to keep going until we do.”

Passafire released their 7th full length album, STRATA, in September 2021 on their own independent label, Flameguy Records. You can find Passafire on tour now in support of the release.

Since forming in 2003, Passafire has released a total of seven studio albums and boasts credits like producing with Paul Leary (Sublime, Pepper, U2, Slightly Stoopid), #1 albums on both the Billboard and iTunes Reggae charts, and sharing stages with rock-reggae OGs 311 and Pepper, and legends Toots & the Maytals, the Wailers, and John Brown’s Body, who in the band’s early years, inspired them to explore reggae with a gritty edge.

“We like to mix tight, clean reggae grooves with distorted guitar riffs” insisted Ted, “We’re ‘90s kids,” added Will, “we love rock, hip-hop and metal equally. It was always natural for us to straddle the line between genres.”

Passafire’s name is a take-off on The Wailers’ classic Catch a Fire album and the band’s hypervigilance towards honoring the culture without appropriating it combined with their unwavering dedication to the expansion of their skills as musicians, producers and songwriters, has led the band to create a sound that stands out from their peers.

Live reviews

Passafire may as well be considered their own genre. The amount of creativity within the group blows my mind every time I see them perform. It's impossible to describe to someone such an image using the rock/reggae genre approach, because that doesn't even explain half of it. The band has come quite a long way since their first album in 2006. Start from Scratch initiated a fundamental sound, as Mike DeGuzman(keyboards) introduced a modern funky electric feel to their music. I was more than impressed with Start from Scratch and even more blown away when I heard Vines, as their style progresses drastically every album. At the same time, Ted Bowne (lead guitar, vocals) is consistent with his techniques for creating engaging music, while maintaining diversity among their songs. This is not an easy thing to do for a ‘reggae’ band. Instead of limiting themselves to generic templates of quick off beat guitar rhythms, they experiment by blending genres within songs to keep listeners interested. Passafire is unexpected and I love it!

Solidifying my admiration for these four people, after they played one of my favorites for the Encore - “Ghost Man“, they all hung out to talk and sign things for the fans, which in my opinion is totally cool of them to do, considering they had to leave the next day at 7am to drive from VA to NJ. This was the second time I’ve seen them, both in small venues, and I would highly suggest seeing them in a smaller place. Being right in front of them while they melt your face off with “Souvenir” gives you the most amazing rush of adrenaline. Finally, I can cross that off my bucket list Some are apprehensive whether the singers’ voice will sound the same as the studio version when performing. At the shows I’ve attended, it sounds like you’re sitting next to Ted in the recording studio he’s so on point. If you don’t know Passafire, get acquainted! >All in all< Passafire seems like a genuine group of guys creating some incredible music. I am looking forward to seeing them again soon.

Passafire is a show like no other! No matter how big or how small the venue is, the band brings live entertainment to another level. They approach the audience with a kind passion that goes unnoticed. The music they play mostly falls under Ska, a genre similar to Sublime. Everytime I see them, they add more flare and more awe to an already awesome performance. Their setlist is flawless in that there is never a dull moment. This is the kind of band that cares for their audience. After their initial set was over, I was glad to see that they stuck around for two more encore songs. They had great respect for the band that opened up for them, and I tip my hat off to them for that kind of generosity and modesty. All in all, the music was euphoric, the atmosphere was exhilarating, and the experience was unforgettable! After the show, they stick around to greet their fans. Although ive met them before, meeting them again was just as memorable as the first. While talking to the singer, I mentioned that I too am in a band and would like to cover one of their songs. After asking the singer Ted, he was delighted to hear so and did not mind at that my band wanted to cover a song. All members of the band were nice, and greeted everyone just as pleasantly. Passafire is a must for all concert-goers!

The show was great! Passafire never disappoints and the energy and stage presence they have are apparent.

The venu was small but clean and the staff were friendly. My ticket buying experience as facilitated through Song Kick was flawless.

Passafire plays Sunday’s reggae rock Pier concert

Bill DeYoung

It was during his university years in Georgia that guitarist Ted Bowne got hooked on reggae music. He and a couple of buddies at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) started playing a hybrid of Jamaican reggae and British/American rock in bars and clubs around town. They called their band Passafire, a play on the title of a classic Bob Marley album, Catch a Fire .

Passafire, celebrating 20 years in 2023, is one of a handful of successful reggae rock bands that continually tour the country – and the world – playing for festival crowds. The band shares the bill with St. Pete’s The Hip Abduction Sunday at the St. Pete Pier, part of the Rise Up concert series.

Bowne still can’t believe two decades have passed. “It’s a selfish, juvenile goal when you start a band in college,” he says. “You want to get girls and you want people to think you’re cool. That’s really kind of the extent of it.

“When we started getting paid, or getting a bar tab to play, it was like ‘We made it!’ As the perks started getting better and better, you say ‘we made it’ over and over again. ‘Oh my God – we’ve started getting chips and salsa every time we play a show – we made it!’ Then it’s ‘Wow, there’s a hot tub in our green room – we made it!’”

Within a year or two, Passafire was playing on bills with Michael Franti & Spearhead, the Wailers, and reggae/dub pioneers John Brown’s Body.

“Going from playing a show in Savannah, where we’d think we might actually be the biggest band in town, to opening shows on a tour, we’d be like ‘Man, we’re small potatoes compared to this.’ We started working our way up in that world, and the past two summers have been huge amphitheater tours with our friends, Iration, Rebelution and the Expendables.”

Passafire’s music is an amalgam of styles; Bowne is a rock ‘n’ roll guitar player, and although reggae is at the root of everything they do – eight albums’ worth, to date – the band is famous for exploring a wide range of rich musical textures.

“When we first started,” he explains, “I was learning to cover a lot of the music that I was listening to. Not just reggae, it was like G. Love & Special Sauce, Citizen Cope, stuff that was new and interesting to me at the time. For me, I feel like reggae rock started in the ‘60s and ‘70s, when classic rock bands started catching the reggae bug, hearing Bob Marley and the Wailers and other foundational reggae artists.

“Led Zeppelin dropped “D’yer Mak’er,” 10CC did “Dreadlock Holiday,” all these bands started playing their version of reggae. It created this new version. You could fuse rock and reggae, and that’s what those guys were doing – the Clash, and the Police, and they were followed by Sublime and 311 and Long Beach Dub All-Stars.”

Today the four members of Passafire live in different states; they come together to record (although much of their most recent album, Remember a Time , was done by sharing files over the internet) and to rehearse and play shows.

Between 2015 and 2018, Bowne lived in St. Petersburg. He ran a recording studio, The Lizard Lodge, out of his garage (Sound Design was his major at SCAD).

He’s married to a St. Pete native, the former Brianna Bayle, who’s been involved in the reggae rock touring business nearly as long as he has (working merch, management and more for such bands as Badfish – A Tribute to Sublime and Slightly Stoopid).

The couple make their home on Maryland’s eastern shore.

Sunday’s performance will be the last one for Passafire in 2023. “It’s crazy,” Bowne says. “Twenty years of anything just sounds like a lot of time. We have definitely put probably more than 20 years of time into those 20 years. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished in our careers, and we’re stoked to look back.”

Rise Up St. Pete: The Hip Abduction, Passafire, Coyote Island, Sierra Lane. At 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 26 at Spa Beach, on the St. Pete Pier. Find tickets here .

passafire band tour

Ted Bowne - Guitar/Lead VocalsWill Kubley - Bass/VocalsAdam Willis - KeysNick Kubley – Drums

Passafire released Everyone on Everynight through LAW Records on September 15, 2009. This is the follow-up to their sophomore album, Submersible, which was recognized by iTunes as one of the “Top 10 Best Reggae Albums” of 2007.

For the new release, iTunes highlighted Passafire by featuring them on the music homepage as well as the reggae page by offering “Here In Front Of Me” from Everyone on Everynight in their distinguishing Discovery Download program. The album release debuted at #1 on iTunes reggae chart, and #6 on the Billboard reggae chart.

Calling Savannah, GA home, Passafire was formed in 2003 by students attending Savannah College of Art and Design. After performing on a stage outside Atlanta’s Hi Fi Buys Amphitheatre in 2006 where the hybrid rock band, Pepper, was opening for 311, a member of Passafire slipped to Pepper a copy of the band’s self-titled debut album, Passafire. Pepper had just founded the independent LAW Records with plans to selectively recruit and nurture bands they actually experienced and were impressed by while out on the road – as opposed to sitting in some distant office and combing through piles of demos. “We’re out there every day, meeting and playing with new bands,” says Pepper bassist/singer, Bret Bollinger. “It’s not a guessing game. We get to meet them, watch them live…”

“And spot their work ethic,” Singer/guitarist, Kaleo Wassman interjects with emphasis.

Passafire developed their sizable fanbase by logging miles all over the US (particularly, in the southeast), which attracted the established booking agent, Monterey International who has taken the band to the next level of touring. Passafire has performed with a variety of major acts including The Wailers, Van Halen, Israel Vibrations, 311, Toots and the Maytals, Los Lonely Boys, Bares Hammond, John Brown’s Body, Matisyahu, the Aggrolites and Dub Trio. The band lives on the road, playing live throughout the year. Singer, Ted Bowne doesn’t mind the grueling schedule and adds, “Touring is the best way to keep the buzz about the band going. What keeps it fun and exciting is the people we meet and places we get to see. We are in a new city every day so there’s always something to go see or do. If we didn’t tour constantly, we wouldn’t be doing as well as we are. That’s a fact.”

After two years since the last album and more than 300 shows, conceptualizing all the while, Passafire recorded the new album at the Sonic Ranch in El Paso, Texas. Self-described “total gear heads,” the band has built on the foundation of Passafire and Submersible an adventurous expansion, an ironic twist that reaches into previously unexplored sonic territories while taking full advantage of the warmth and accessibility of analog technologies that this studio provided.

Horns appear on three tracks and throughout singer, Ted Bowne, plays on a variety of classic guitars paired with vintage tube amps while Adam Willis is off in keyboardist’s heaven, incorporating the venerable Hammond B3 as well as the Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos. The brothers, Will and Nick Kubley anchor their rhythm section. Highlights from their studio sessions can be seen on http://www.youtube.com/user/passafiretheband

“We always wanted to have a good balance of organic and synthesized sounds and we finally had the chance to make that happen this time,” recollects Bowne.
