How Princess Cruises Works With Influencers to Tell Its Brand Stories More Authentically

As you read in our May 15 edition, the Fyre Festival was a boon to those in the anti-influencer camp. A slew of influencers endorsed what was supposed to be a luxurious event on a secluded island featuring a fabulous concert. As Katie Paine wrote in that edition, what followers of well-compensated Instagram influencers found when they arrived at the festival were “blown-down FEMA tents and cheese sandwiches.” Fyre spent lavishly on high-priced influencers, but failed to make the same investment in the event itself. While this incident may not in itself be an indictment of the practice of using influencers to support brands, it prompted us to think about why brands collaborate with influencers and some best practices associated with them.

We spoke with Sara Dunaj, social media manager, Princess Cruises , who acknowledges the chatter that the influencer bubble is ready to burst for many brands. Still, Princess believes in the judicious use of influencers “as a way for us to get out messages that we might not be able to authentically disseminate as a brand.”

For example, she says, “if we were to put out an ad that says, ‘On a cruise, you’ll never get bored,’ no consumer is going to buy that, because it’s so strongly biased.” The result of her brand’s work with influencers is social content “that shows, not tells” how enjoyable a cruise can be, she says. [Influencers] show “themselves authentically having non-stop fun…and transformative experiences [on our cruises and at the destinations we sail. And they do this] in ways that we as a brand cannot...it’s far more impactful than if we were to tell a consumer what’s going to happen” on a Princess cruise.

Since influencers are working full-time on content creation “we absolutely believe in compensating them.” When negotiating, Dunaj looks for the “sweet spot…where the brand gets the ROI it needs and the influencer feels he or she is being compensated fairly.” With “so many influencers in the marketplace with sky-high fees, most brands are not going to be able to get” a proper ROI. “It’s really about looking for those right partnerships where you will get the ROI” you need. Dunaj feels brands should hold influencer marketing “to the same standard they hold other types of advertising, PR and social media.”

Finding Them/Message Control

Princess works with its agency MMGY to find influencers “who have the right audience that will impact our bottom line.” These are not necessarily influencers with “the biggest audience,” she adds. Selena Gomez has the largest Instagram following, yet “her audience of tweens” are unlikely “to book a cruise” so “we wouldn’t work with her, even if we received a good rate.”

Dunaj also seeks influencers “who will truly enjoy our brand…when influencers are creating content, it’s very obvious when they don’t have a passion for your brand.”

“We don’t require our influencers to submit their content to us for review before posting. We don’t want it to be in our voice. We want it to be in their voice. We want them to be sharing their authentic experience and what they know will matter to their audience. We’re willing to give up that bit of control because we realize the influencers know their audiences better than we ever could.” Yet “we absolutely do have discussions [with influencers] about priority messaging, what aspects of our product we’re trying to push, but we leave it to them” to convey these messages to their audience.

Delicate Dance

Having just returned from an 11-day, seven-country Baltic cruise with influencers, Dunaj has plenty of tips for communicators charged with overseeing an influencer effort. The main themes revolve around two-way communication and scheduling. Communicators who are comfortable working with traditional media will need to adjust. The biggest conundrum is creating a schedule that is flexible but also loaded with potential experiences. Influencers need flexibility on trips, since “it takes longer to set up an Instagram post…with the perfect cake and cappuccino than you’d expect.” A packed schedule can result in a lower ROI for a brand since influencers will lack the time required “to push out as much content” as they need to, she adds.

Still, it’s important to give influencers plenty of content possibilities, she says. With the advent of Instagram Stories, social influencers “have to push out a very steady stream of content…they’re filing 24/7...it can be exhausting.”

In addition, “keep in mind their peak engagement times…they have a content cadence and a scheduled posting time just as any brand would. Their social presence is highly strategic.” And don’t forget about time zone changes as they relate to influencers’ posting schedules. “Working with influencers is a true partnership.” As such communication is key, she adds.

Brian O’Connor

Princess Cruises has appointed Brian O’Connor to the role of vice president, public relations, effective June 1.  He succeeds Julie Benson who will retire May 29, after 32 years of service.

In this role, O’Connor will lead the team accountable for media relations, publicity, social media, community relations, ship introductions and special events. He will drive messaging for product and program launches and be responsible for issues management and crisis communications. He will also oversee the collaboration among the international public relations teams in the United Kingdom, Australia and throughout Asia.

“Brian brings more than 15 years of experience in strategic planning and creative campaign development to this integral role for Princess Cruises,” said Gordon Ho, senior vice president of global marketing and North America sales. “Princess will benefit from his leadership and his track record of developing and executing high-profile initiatives that will shape the narrative of our global brand and increase awareness among key audiences including media, retailers, consumers and employees,” added Ho.

O’Connor joined the company in 2006 as director, public relations for Cunard Line elevating awareness for the brand in North America through such high-profile initiatives as Queen Mary 2 appearing in the premier episode of the hit series Mighty Ships created by Discovery Channel, the Britannia Ball gala fundraiser for the New York City Opera and the first performances by James Taylor and his band on a transatlantic crossing.  He’s supported the launch of Queen Victoria with press events by partnering with NYC & Company and staging the first three Queens Cunard Royal Rendezvous in New York in 2008. He was promoted to director, marketing and public relations in 2009 and supported the launch of Queen Elizabeth in 2010.

In 2012, O’Connor was appointed vice president, North America sales, responsible for leading the field sales team representing both Princess and Cunard.  He is credited with strengthening trade relations and growing distribution with North America retail partners. As he transitions from sales he will complete his service as chairman of the CLIA Trade Relations Committee.  Interviews to identify his successor are underway.

Prior to joining Cunard, O’Connor served as director of public relations at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, where he was accountable for publicity and media relations for more than 125 events annually ranging from red carpet charity galas and political fundraisers to numerous award shows including The Golden Globe® Awards.

In addition to positions held at Princess and Cunard, O’Connor is a past president and five term board member of the Public Relations Society of America – Los Angeles Chapter (PRSA-LA). He is also a graduate of the Protocol School of Washington’s protocol officer training and certification and is a member of Protocol Diplomacy International – Protocol Officers Association (PDI-POA).

O’Connor is a graduate of Michigan State University’s School of Communication Arts & Sciences.

SANTA CLARITA, CA — Princess Cruises is reviewing its US PR agency support, PRovoke Media has learned. PRovoke Media understands that Princess Cruises — which is owned by Carnival, one of the largest cruise line companies in the world — is looking for an agency of record to handle primarily consumer communications. Corporate communications also is part of the remit, sources said. Princess Cruises confirmed that the pitch currently is underway. “This review is not the result of any shortcomings with our current agency but rather a reflection of the high premium we place on maintaining excellence in our business operations, including our strategic partnerships,” the company said in a statement. “A regular evaluation of our agencies of record is essential to staying at the forefront of our industry and ensuring that we continue to optimize our effectiveness in promoting the Princess cruise experience and protecting our iconic brand.” The US review comes on the heels of changes in Princess’ UK agency partnerships. Earlier this year, Princess hired Stir PR to handle its communications in the UK. The cruise line also awarded The7stars its media account. In the US, Princess has recently worked with creative agency Omelet, which executed integrated marketing campaigns for the brand. Princess has also worked with Ogilvy and Golin over the years. FleishmanHillard handled PR for all of Carnival’s cruise lines, including Princess, in Australia.

Princess cruises successfully completes first voyage following extended pause in operations.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. , Aug. 1, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Majestic Princess returned to Seattle today, concluding its sailing to Alaska and marking the first successful United States voyage for Princess Cruises  following the extended pause in operations. The ship became the line's first ship to return to service, kicking off the partial season of Alaska sailings departing through September 26, 2021 . The round-trip, seven-day cruise visited Glacier Bay National Park , Juneau , Skagway and Ketchikan .

In addition to visiting signature ports, glaciers and attractions, guests on board Majestic Princess this summer will enjoy authentic Alaska -themed activities offered throughout the award-winning "North to Alaska " program that brings together local personalities, culture and Alaska seafood to immerse guests in the history and traditions of The Last Frontier. Signature specialty dining, Movies Under the Stars, production shows and Discovery@SEA programs are also available—from original musicals, magic shows, feature films, top comedians and original game shows, guests will be entertained while onboard Majestic Princess.

This fall, Princess Cruises will begin sailing from Los Angeles , San Francisco , and Ft. Lauderdale. Starting between September 25 and November 28, 2021 , cruises onboard eight Princess MedallionClass™ ships will once again take guests to the Caribbean , Panama Canal , Mexico , Hawaii , and the California Coast .

Princess cruises sailings through 2021 are available for guests who have received their final dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the beginning of the cruise and have proof of vaccination. Crew vaccinations will be in accordance with CDC guidelines.

With the “Better than Best Price Guarantee” guests are assured that if they find a better fare for the same Princess cruise, stateroom category, and sail date at any time before their final payment, Princess will honor the lower rate and provide 120% of the difference in the form of an onboard credit.

MIAMI , Sept. 16, 2024 /CNW/ --  Norwegian Cruise Line ®  (NCL), the innovator in global cruise travel, today revealed " Revolution: A Celebration of Prince " and " Elements: The World Expanded " as the two new exclusive entertainment offerings set to debut aboard the Company's next-generation vessel, Norwegian Aqua™ , in April 2025.

With more variety of entertainment options including only-on-NCL productions and returning guest favorites, there will be something for everyone to enjoy on board. The brand-new and immersive Prince tribute show, " Revolution: A Celebration of Prince, " developed in partnership with Prince Legacy, LLC and Primary Wave Music, will honor and celebrate the Oscar ®  winning, seven-time Grammy ®  Award-winning and 38-time Grammy ® nominated artist during a concert-like experience featuring the music icon's chart-topping hits, including "Let's Go Crazy," "Little Red Corvette," "Delirious," "Purple Rain," and more.

NCL is also taking its highest guest-rated show in its history, "Elements," and enhancing it with new surprises in "Elements: The World Expanded." Blending acrobatics, magic and intrigue, this show draws inspiration from the four elements – earth, wind, water and fire – for an astonishing display of unexpected delights. 

Both productions were developed by NCL's in-house production team at the Creative Studios by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings in Tampa, Fla., in partnership with Patricia Wilcox, an award-winning Broadway choreographer, director and long-time NCL partner. From original costumes to one-of-a-kind entertainment, the Creative Studios has produced in-house shows since 2008.

Revolution: A Celebration of Prince

The hour-long show aboard Norwegian Aqua will be an in-house NCL production and concert experience celebrating Prince's music, energy, and life. At its core, the show will embrace the global icon's rise to popularity, as one of the leaders of soul, rock and pop music. Set in the Aqua Theater & Club, the show will feature performances both on stage and off for a fully immersive experience. Guests will also have the option to enjoy the show on the dance floor with the cast or watch from traditional theater seating.

Now, it will be revamped and reimagined with the debut of Norwegian Aqua. The all-new " Elements: The World Expanded" will be a more immersive version of the already dazzling production that revels in the four elements of earth, air, water, and fire, while featuring mesmerizing magic, visual acts of aerial acrobatics along with music and dance to captivate guests' attention from the moment the show opens.

The Aqua Theater & Club

The Aqua Theater & Club, similar to the Theater & Club aboard Norwegian Prima ® and Norwegian Viva ® , will transform from a three-story theater to a three-story Vegas-style nightclub featuring an expansive dance floor, enhanced and interactive chandelier, state-of-the-art lighting, and more. Boasting two different bars, the Aqua Theater & Club will showcase all nightclub programming through three different themed experiences: " 90s Party, " where guests can relive the top hits and outfits of the decade; " Livin' La Vida Loca ," featuring the latest Latin jams for a night of non-stop dancing; and " Pop Life ," a Prince influenced club experience where guests can dance the night away to the music icon's top-charting songs and music influenced by his unique style. The entertainment programming also includes a brand-new in-house production for NCL, "The Welcome Aboard Show " where vocalists, dancers, and onboard crew provide guests a tantalizing preview of all the offerings to come throughout their sailing. Princess guests sailing with a Princess Plus or Premier Package on voyages embarking between August 1 and December 1, 2024 will receive double the cruise credits to fast track them closer to their next loyalty tier.
