Types of Pumpkin Patches

There are several types of pumpkin patches. Some have other fun attractions like a hayride, train ride, corn maze , petting zoo, carousel, zip-line, bounce house, and more. Other pumpkin patches are simply for finding pumpkins.

You will find three main types of pumpkin patches: Pick your own, already harvested, and church lawns. No matter which you choose, they often have other attractions to keep the little ones happily entertained.

How to Find a Pumpkin Patch Near You

Check your local newspaper or family resource guide for a nearby pumpkin patch. Another easy way to find a local pumpkin patch is to type “pumpkin patch near me” into the Google search bar.

Another good question is about the type of pumpkins they have available. Below are my tips for choosing the type of pumpkin you need. You may also want to ask if there will be food available or places to eat if you want to bring your own family picnic .

How to Choose A Pumpkin

There are three main types of pumpkins: carving, gourds, and baking or pie pumpkins. The type of pumpkin you need will depend on what you will do with it.

You will want to ensure the pumpkin patch you visit has the type of pumpkin you want. Will you be carving, decorating, baking, or using pumpkins for the educational activities listed in the next section?

If you want to make homemade pumpkin puree , you will want to choose a small 8 to 10-inch sugar pumpkin. Sugar pumpkins are sweeter than other pumpkins and have been developed for eating. Look for a firm pumpkin with no soft spots or signs of any rot. A few more pumpkin recipe ideas are listed below.

If you are carving your pumpkins or decorating them in some way, look for a visually appealing pumpkin without any soft spots or signs of rot. Choose a pumpkin with a stem and ensure it sits how you want it to when placed on a flat surface.

You will also want to choose a color and shape that will work for the design you have in mind. Pumpkin carving ideas and no-carve decorating ideas can be found below.

Make sure to grab an extra pumpkin or two to try some fun pumpkin activities for kids listed in the next section!

Cool article for pumpkin patches. You mentioned you should try to find out if the pumpkin patch has pumpkins you are looking for. It sounds important to research different types of pumpkins before hand so you have a better idea of what you should look for.

' src=

Yes, it is Taylor.

I think most pumpkin patches that are open to the public have carving pumpkins available. But if you are looking for pumpkins to bake with it is important to make sure the pumpkin patch has sugar pie pumpkins!

This is a really good idea. We have just concluded a month long unit study on Halloween and pumpkins today. As part of the unit study, I took the twins to a pumpkin patch and read stories about pumpkins as well. We even had our own version of a culinary bake off with pumpkins. And we did some math related to pumpkins too. I even had the children participate in some fun science experiments that revolved around pumpkins.

To wrap things up, I finished by allowing both kids to do some art with pumpkins. Next time I’m going to have them write a recount about their trip to a pumpkin patch. And make a mini fact file. The kids loved it. I made pumpkin soup and pie. We even tried making pumpkin crumble. It was lovely!

Wow, Leah! That sounds like you had an amazing time learning about pumpkins… Well done!

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip

  • Halloween , Fall , Printables , Field Trips

My most favorite field trip that we take as a class each year is to the pumpkin patch. There’s just nothing like Fall.  Grab a free printable to help your class trip!

pumpkin patch field trip ideas

This activity goes well with these resources:

Pumpkin Craft

The kids just get the biggest kick out of getting to choose a pumpkin from the patch to bring home and we always learn so much about the fruits and vegetables that they grow on the farm. Since pumpkins are fruit, we also learn that cucumbers and tomatoes are fruits too since they have seeds. We also learn about corn and its different uses. We learn the differences between Indian corn, feed corn, and the corn we eat. It always blows me a way to learn how much corn is in so many products we use. Think toothpaste, diapers, shampoo, and more!

pumpkin-patch-field-trip

When we get back to school, it’s always so hard to transition back after a field trip. Parent volunteers leaving, the kids are hyper from having fun and riding the bus. Sometimes even having to get them to eat a sack lunch at the tables outside since we missed regular lunch. Let’s just say it makes it tough to get much of anything else productive done in the classroom for the rest of the day. I know we’ve all been there!

I’ve made up this printable to give the kids to work on after all of the craziness. It gets them practicing their writing and has them remembering back to all of the fun things that they saw earlier that day of the field trip. It’s very helpful to make that transition back into learning mode!

The Best PreK and Kindergarten Field Trips (Both Virtual and In-Person!)

From the pumpkin patch to the fire station.

kindergarten field trips

Kinders are a wild bunch and taking them anywhere might seem daunting, but field trips provide kids with the kind of real-world learning that really sticks with them. These kindergarten field trips will keep your young students interested and (mostly) out of trouble.

Not all of these trips will be possible everywhere, but keep in mind local treasures that are unique to your area. And when you can’t manage a trip—for whatever reason—try our virtual kindergarten field trips below.

In-Person Kindergarten Field Trips

1. the pumpkin patch.

Is it even kindergarten if you don’t go to the pumpkin patch? Many locations offer tours via hayride and the opportunity to learn how vegetables like pumpkins grow. And, of course, picking out your own pumpkin is the best part!

2. The Grocery Store

A behind-the-scenes trip to the supermarket can teach kindergarteners everything from how their food is sourced to the concept of paying for goods with money. They can explore different roles and departments and—everyone’s favorite—try food samples.

pumpkin patch field trip ideas

Going to the zoo provides students with the chance to observe animal behaviors and learn about wildlife conservation. Most of them, like the San Diego Zoo , have educational programs, including keeper talks and up-close animal encounters.

4. A Children’s Museum

At children’s museums, the rule is: Please touch! If you’re lucky enough to have a children’s museum close by, most have areas specifically designed for children ages 5-6. Look for role-play areas, climbing structures, and water play.

5. The Fire Station

Grades K–2 are big on learning about community helpers, so the fire station is a great choice! A visit can help ease young children’s anxiety (sometimes firefighters can look scary in all their gear). And they’re sure to be fascinated by the trucks and equipment.

6. An Apple Orchard

pumpkin patch field trip ideas

Who doesn’t love apple activities ? A visit to the orchard allows little ones to learn how apples are raised and harvested. This is a great opportunity for them to pick their own apples and taste different varieties.

7. The Public Library

It’s never too early to teach kids about the amazing place that is their local library. On a trip to the public library, you can show your kinders how a library works, introduce them to the librarians (ask in advance for a storytime), and maybe even sign them up for their own library cards!

8. The Aquarium

If you’re not lucky enough to have a zoo close by, an aquarium is another good choice. Students will get a window into life under the sea, and lots of aquariums have touch pools that are sure to delight littles.

9. A Bakery

pumpkin patch field trip ideas

On a bakery field trip, curious kindergarteners can learn about how bread, cakes, and pastries are made. Take a tour of the kitchen and watch the mixing of ingredients and the baking process. Some bakeries even offer kids’ activities, like cookie decorating!

A farm field trip is a great way to connect children to agriculture. Plus, there are all kinds: dairy farms, poultry farms, apiaries, and more. You might try a large commercial dairy farm or a smaller family-owned hobby farm.

Virtual Kindergarten Field Trips

1. an egg farm.

pumpkin patch field trip ideas

We love these virtual egg farm field trips from the American Egg Board. Make sure you catch the elementary-friendly versions of Hertzfeld Poultry and Creighton Brothers Farms.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6wbfVWVk8Q[/embedyt]

Most zoos have live webcams in some of their most popular exhibits, such as the Panda Cam at Zoo Atlanta . However, some zoos offer a more in-depth look. You’ll definitely want to check out the San Diego Zoo .

3. The Aquarium

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY8__n13tKM[/embedyt]

It’s a similar story with aquariums. You have your pick of live webcams, but our favorites are the Georgia Aquarium’s Ocean Voyager webcam (wait for the whale shark!) and the “jellycam” at Monterey Bay Aquarium (so soothing). And definitely check out  The Maritime Aquarium where you can register for their virtual programs (try Fish Tales, A House for a Hermit Crab, or Shark Safari).

4. Boston Children’s Museum

“Walk” through all three floors of the Boston Children’s Museum on this virtual tour . Direct your students to the Countdown to Kindergarten exhibit.

  • Wagon Ride :  Once everyone has been checked in and stickers put on, the first stop is the Wagon Ride!  The wagons run continuously every 10 minutes or so and takes you around our 30 acre farm to see all the pumpkins and crops growing.
  • Petting Zoo :  When the wagon returns, the next stop is the Petting Zoo.  There are goats, sheep, even an alpaca or 2 to pet.  Make sure to supervise all children to take good care of the animal friends.  Hand sanitizing stations are available outside the cages.
  • Corn Maze :  Right next to the zoo is the Corn Maze.  Enter the maze and try to find your way to the center and back out.  The maze is not too complicated for younger children but definitely makes you feel lost among the cornstalks!
  • U-Pick Veggies :  After gathering your group out of the maze, head on over to the Vegetable Patch!  A friendly Patch helper will pass out bags and tell you all about the vegetables and how to pick them.  Each child can take home 4 of each kind of veggie – carrots, radishes, green onions, and cilantro.  Extra veggies can be picked and purchased for an additional price per pound (pay in the Market Stand)
  • Pumpkin Patch :  Last stop but certainly not least is picking a pumpkin!  Walk on over the pumpkin patch to choose which pumpkin to take home.  Flat one, tall one, skinny one…bumpy one?  Orange, white, green?

Pumpkin Patch Scavenger Hunt Free Printable Activity Post Preview: Have fun on your next trip to the pumpkin patch with this free printable scavenger hunt!

Going to the pumpkin patch during the fall is one of those quintessential family outings. And, even if you don’t go to one as a family, it’s a pretty popular school field trip option.

My favorite thing on field trips to the pumpkin patch is when kids can take the biggest pumpkin they can carry. It’s pretty funny to watch what they attempt (and what some kids can carry!). I’m just saying – it seems like it’s always the smallest kid that can carry the biggest pumpkin. I love that! You go, kid!

For some extra fun on your next pumpkin patch field trip or family outing, I have a free printable pumpkin patch scavenger hunt!

Going to the pumpkin patch is fun in and of itself, especially if you’re going to one with lots of activities available. Adding a scavenger hunt to your day is a fun extension to the festivities.

Of course, when I was growing up, going to the pumpkin patch just meant going to a farm just outside of the tiny village I lived in that literally just had pumpkins out front. Going to the pumpkin patch is quite different now, with many having hayrides, corn mazes, and more.

Admittedly, my most memorable trip to the pumpkin patch was the year I was in second grade. My Girl Scout troop went on a field trip and many girls were not there because chickenpox was working its way through school. I started to not feel great while we were there, and yep – you guessed it. I found chickenpox while laying on my couch when I got home feeling miserable.

Hopefully, your pumpkin patch trip is a little more fun and less chickenpox-y than that trip.

Things to Find on the Pumpkin Patch Scavenger Hunt

You might not find everything on the list at your pumpkin patch, of course. However, I bet you’ll find many of them, so be on the lookout to see how many you can mark off.

Items on the scavenger hunt:

  • Picnic Table
  • Sunflower (here is an easy sunflower craft for kids )
  • Barrel Train
  • Farm Animals (here is a free printable template set and directions for how to make barn animals stick puppets )
  • Pumpkin (here is a pumpkin mixed media art project )

Just download the Pumpkin Patch Scavenger Hunt (a little bit farther down in the post) and print it out. You can then use it as is or you can laminate it to make it sturdier.

Then, of course, just take it along with you to the pumpkin patch and do your searching!

Virtual Pumpkin Patch Field Trip

virtual-pumpkin-patch-field-trip

A Virtual Pumpkin Patch Field Trip is perfect, especially during the fall season. Let’s go on a  trip to a pumpkin patch. A Virtual Pumpkin Patch Field Trip is the BEST fall activity for your students.

Happy Fall Y’all! Here in the south, we love fall. I especially love the fall season and all the fun activities and beautiful weather it brings. I can tell my students do too.  As teachers, we are able to implement so many fun components to our classrooms, standards, and curriculums especially classroom décor and coordinating fall-themed activities. I mean, it’s every teacher’s dream is to find super engaging lessons that are also cute!

Virtual field trips are perfect to implement in the classroom. Whether you are able to take field trips away from school or not, virtual field trips are still a great option and can be implemented in many different ways. You can implement it for Fun Friday or choose a standards-based field trip. Personally, standards-based virtual field trips are my favorite because I feel you get the most bang for your buck.

Students get to experience places and things they otherwise never would, plus the experience is directly related to the standards. Oh wait, I forgot the BEST part...with all the virtual field trips you find here, the work is done for you!

Travel virtually with your students to explore an amazing pumpkin patch in California. The narrator educates students on pumpkin sizes, shapes, and colors. The cool and interesting facts students will learn are directly related to the Pumpkin Patch Virtual Field Trip resource . Students will learn so much about pumpkins. They will learn the life cycle of a pumpkin and learn how a pumpkin grows in all colors, shapes, and sizes. My students also think the life cycle of a pumpkin is interesting and enjoy this unit. If you really want to step up the unit, bake pumpkin seeds for student's to taste. You also can purchase or bake homemade pumpkin pie for student's to try. My students love this tasty treat. When I started incorporating pumpkin pie into this unit, I was very surprised at how many students had never eaten it. It's a cool memory for the first time students taste it to be with their favorite teacher!

Virtual Field Trip to the Pumpkin Patch

  • 20 Questions Over the Virtual Pumpkin Patch Virtual Field Trip Video (multiple choice)
  • K-W-L Chart
  • Life Cycle of a Pumpkin Chart
  • Life Cycle of a Pumpkin Fill-in-the-Blank
  • Life Cycle of a Pumpkin Color Sheet
  • How to Use Pumpkin
  • Pumpkin Color Sheet

As you can see, everything you need to have an EPIC virtual field trip to the pumpkin patch is included. This resource can be broken up into 1-2 days depending on your schedule. I know you are going to love this experience as much as your students.

Virtual Pumpkin Patch Field Trip Extensions

I wanted to share with you a few suggestions for extensions. If you have a local pumpkin farm, Walmart, or grocery store nearby, ask for donations of pumpkins. You may also ask parents to send in a pumpkin with their child if you have good parent support.  If possible get one for every student. Allow students time to decorate their pumpkin and take it home.

If getting a pumpkin for every student isn’t possible, grab a couple of different shapes and sizes of pumpkins for your classroom. This is great so students can smell and touch the pumpkin. If time allows, cut the pumpkin open so students can see and touch the seeds and guts on the pumpkins.

To go the extra mile, roast pumpkins seeds for your class. You also can order roasted pumpkin seeds from Amazon. Yes, Amazon has everything and I am thankful!

I don't know about you but I love this time of year. The fall season offers so many fun activities that can incorporate inside and outside of the classroom. Student are energized from summer break. I also love the idea of fall festivals, pumpkins, Halloween, Thanksgiving, leading up to Christmas.

Children's Books about Pumpkins

My students love books! I put together a great list of children’s books about pumpkins for you. My students love a good read aloud and the fall season offers so many fun choices that you can relate to content. Click the links below to shop on Amazon or watch a video recording of the read-aloud.

I hope you will implement a virtual pumpkin patch field trip and the other activities mentioned with your students!  They are sure to enjoy participating and making fun memories. I just know your students will enjoy the virtual field trip pumpkin patch as much as mine do!

Enjoy your trip!

Happy Fall Ya'll!

6 Perfect Rexburg Pumpkin Patch Ideas and Options

Whether you're looking for information on pumpkin patch ideas or plans for your pumpkin treats, you'll need the run down of where to find a good pumpkin patch Rexburg Idaho is nearby. There are actually tons of them in the area for you to choose from!

Where Are They?

In our article about everything fall, we already talked a bit about R.C. Acres, A Sincere Pumpkin Patch, and U Pick Redbarn, but we've got a few more suggestions and some pricing info for you.

R.C. Acres is open this year (2021) 4 PM till dark, about 6 PM, every weekday. On Saturdays, they're open from 11 AM till dark. They have an array of fall decorations for sale and of course a field full of pumpkins! Their pricing is based on size and type, so their gourds and mini pumpkins are 1 and 2 dollars, and their pumpkins from $4 to $15 between small and extra huge pumpkins! They have a great variety even now, a couple weeks before the big day of Halloween, and are making sure to keep them covered away from the snow for you.

pumpkin patch field trip ideas

A Sincere Pumpkin Patch

A Sincere Pumpkin Patch hasn't listed their prices anywhere, but they usually charge by weight. They have a variety of gourds to choose from as well as all sizes of pumpkins! Their pumpkins are always bright and orange and ready for you, but you have to make sure to grab them before the frost does, so head over soon. Depending on when you go, the location might have up a mini straw maze, a photo board with your favorite Charlie Brown characters, or a hay stand covered with pumpkins for a photo op!

U Pick Redbarn

U Pick Redbarn is the hotspot for activities for your pumpkin patch ideas, especially with kids. They have a tractor ride, jump station, a corn pit (like a sand box), and even pumpkin cannons. If you want a place to purchase your pumpkin and send it sailing to a beautiful explosion, or if you want to pick out a wheelbarrow full of decorative pumpkins, this is the place to go. Their location has carving pumpkins as well as gourds, flat green and white pumpkins, and bumpy textured pumpkins at 3 for $25, 5 for $36, and their activities are separate.

Ashland Produce

Ashland Produce is a patch we haven't talked about before. They're located down in Rigby, and throughout the year and even now during fall, they offer a variety of produce for purchase. Most importantly for this time of year, they have a large pumpkin field for you to peruse as well as a variety of squash and gourds. They are open form 10 AM to 7:30 PM for all your produce and Halloween needs. They're not on Google Maps quite yet, so put in the address 158 N 4544 E. Rigby, ID 83442 to head over.

pumpkin patch field trip ideas

Fall Festival at Treehouse Nursery

Fall Festival at Treehouse Nursery offers food and games as well as a selection of pumpkins. In the past they've had a fairy tale forest and a pumpkin cannon and aspire to have a petting zoo! The location is open weekdays from 4 to 7 and Saturday from 10 AM to 7 PM and is $5 per person.

New Sweden Farms

New Sweden Farms has a yearly corn maze and pumpkin patch they do in Idaho Falls. Until October 30, they'll be open from 5 PM to 9 PM for you to make your selection or wander through their corn maze, cut out to look like a 9/11 memorial when seen from above. An adult pass is $12 but has a discount rate for large groups, and their pumpkins are currently buy one get one free! You can check their Facebook page for any times they open early or when they offer discounts for their pumpkin patch ideas. They also have a bouncy area, a tractor ride, and horseback rides!

Non-Patch Pumpkins

If you aren't wanting to take the trek through a field through your personal pumpkin, there are plenty of grocers in the location who brought them to town. Although this won't really be with pumpkin patch ideas, you can still get your fall on with their supply!

Costco is currently selling pumpkins for $6.99 as a flat rate, which is great if you're aiming for a bunch of larger pumpkins. If you're wanting more bang for your buck, especially if you favor smaller, more carriable pumpkins, you'll want to check out one of the stores that sells pumpkins by weight.

pumpkin patch field trip ideas

Winco is currently selling pumpkins for 18 cents a pound, so about $2 to $4 for a medium pumpkin. Safeway, or if you can't get to Idaho Falls, Albertsons, are both selling pumpkins for 23 cents per pound, so about $4.50 to $7 for a medium one at either location, and Walmart is just one cent more at 24 cents per pound.

Walmart is also selling white pumpkins for about $4 each, or Broulim's has them for 59 cents per pound. Gourds are about $1 to $3 all around, from Walmart to Albertsons to Broulim's, and you can find a variety of kinds in each range.

What to Do with your Punkins

Pumpkin carving is always the most obvious answer for fall pumpkin activities. The best tips for pumpkin carving are to wash before carving, hollow it by (if you can get your hands on the tools) using a drill and a heavy duty cake beater, a sturdy ice cream scoop, or a rice paddle, and use pins to poke out your pattern or plan before you start carving. You can download a free pattern or watch a YouTube tutorial to get your carve on. You can use a just serrated knife and pins or go all out with a set of carving tools.

Decorations and Photos

Both before and after carving, pumpkins are also great for some basic white girl fall photos. You can pose together with your roommates or at family home evening to show them off, or you can show how they decorate your front door! A lot of locations have decoration contests, so check out with your complex if you can get a prize for your pumpkin pictures.

pumpkin patch field trip ideas

Another way to use the pumpkins is to keep and bake the seeds . If you're looking for a less involved way to make homemade pumpkin seeds, you can use other winter squash (butternut squash, for example), and just cut it in half to see and scoop out the seeds. For authentic pumpkin seeds, simply set the pumpkin insides to the side and separate the seeds from the pulp and fiber. You can do this by putting them in a bowl of water to make it easier, but it will be a bit more goopy!

Once you've separated the seeds, wash them in a colander. If you don't have one, you can just use a regular bowl and strain them out with a slotted spoon or scoop them out and dry them in a cloth or paper towel. You can find tons of recipes for them from savory to sweet, but we would recommend putting them in a greased pan, covering them with cinnamon and sugar, and baking for 15 minutes at 350 degrees!

You can also eat any variety of pumpkin or squash, but if it's bitter, you shouldn't eat it. Extreme bitterness means it's no longer safe to eat! Whether you make pies, soups, or breads, you can really use it, guts and all. In some varieties, you can't eat the skin, and you shouldn't ever eat the stem. You also shouldn't eat painted pumpkins, and don't eat pumpkins that you've cut open and left out for more than 4 hours!

pumpkin patch field trip ideas

If you don't want to deal with the mess of pumpkin insides, you can always paint your pumpkins. You can use a white pumpkin for this, but regular acrylic paint still shows on an orange pumpkin! You can do everything from handprints to full masterpieces and still just have brushes to clean up after pumpkin decorating. Painted pumpkins also last longer, but be sure to dispose of them within a month! Whatever you do, don't smash them on the sidewalk - they'll freeze there until April!

Head on Out!

Go ahead and get your jack o' lantern on with these pumpkin patch ideas. Whether you just go for the pumpkins or you take the time to play some games or do a straw maze, you can have a great time this fall with all that's going on!

Ranked Idaho's Best Pumpkin Patch by Reader's Digest!

Choose from pumpkins we have picked or take a hayride to the patch to find your perfect pumpkin. Our huge pumpkin patch has thousands of pumpkins of every size, shape, and color. In fact, this year we have more than 55 premium varieties of pumpkins and gourds. From Jack-O-Lanterns to pie pumpkins to warted gourds, you are sure to find the one that strikes your fancy. Pick them right off the vine or choose from some that we have pre-picked for you.

Guide to Pumpkin Picking:

go: walk or take the hayride into the farmstead's pumpkin patch.   tip: if you're walking, grab a wagon to help haul your pumpkins out.

SEARCH:  Find your perfect pumpkins! Take some time to explore all the quality varieties of pumpkins we have to offer.   TIP: The Farmstead plants many varieties (many of our favorites listed below). We know that you'll find just what you're looking for!

PICK: Pick your pumpkin off the vine. Careful not to damage the stem! TIP: Find the joint where the stem turns to vine. Bending the vine at this weak spot is the best way to disconnect the stem from the vine.

HAUL: Bring your pumpkin to the Scale House near the exit to be weighed. Pay per pound at the Exit Booth. TIP: If you have a wagon, wheel it onto the scale and we will subtract its weight from the total!

Pumpkins available for purchase by the pound

Gourds available for purchase individually, straw bales available for purchase by the bale, pumpkin carts and wheelbarrows are available... use for pumpkins only.

This is a classic for Jack-O-Lanterns! It's great for carving since it has thin meat and more room inside.

Jack-O-Little

These pumpkins are simply miniature versions of the common Aladdin pumpkins! They can last for months, especially if used indoors as decor.

Kakai

These dual-toned pumpkins are great for decoration, but try roasted their seeds and you won't be sorry!

Sugar Pie

Just as you may have guessed, these small-to-medium sized pumpkins are amazing for pies!

Cinderella

This pumpkin is perfect with your fall decor, but can also be eaten!

Lumina

These are white on the outside and orange inside. The are great for carving, but their fleshy meat is also good in pies!

Jarrahdale

These are pale green and provide a nice contrast when decorating. They are good for baking if you can cut through the tough skin.

Fairy Tale

Silvery-orange in color, these pumpkins go well in a group of decorations... And can also be used in pies!

Baby Bear

These tiny pumpkins are great for kids... Try decorating them or even making them into soup bowls!
