Staterooms vary from ship to ship, but one thing is certain, it’s guaranteed to be your home away from home for a few days. Let’s get acquainted with some staterooms and suites that might be on your ship.

Suites are often situated in the most desirable location on the ship: on the top deck, either right in the front or back (for ultimate panoramic views) or midship (for stability). Typically suites are the largest of the staterooms onboard, some having more amenities than others.  Standard Size:  295 - 600 sq. ft.

Dual balcony stateroom

The Dual Balcony Stateroom combines your walk-out veranda and seating area with a french balcony to enjoy the sights while sitting indoors. Standard Size: 175 - 215 sq. ft.

French balcony stateroom

These staterooms will have a floor to ceiling glass door/slider that opens to allow fresh air to flow through. You will not be able to stand outside and there is no seating area outdoors. Standard Size: 175 - 215 sq. ft.

Balcony stateroom

Some ships offer a full-sized veranda and seating area outdoors through a floor-to-ceiling glass door. These balconies are generally 3-4 feet deep and 10-16 feet in length depending on the stateroom size. Standard Size: 175 - 215 sq. ft.

Window stateroom

These staterooms are on the lower level of the ship and the windows are positioned above water level. Please note that some operators refer to window staterooms as river-view rooms. The windows are usually about 5 feet above the floor, which is shoulder height for most. This window does not open. Standard Size: 125 - 170 sq. ft.

Single stateroom

This is a specially designed stateroom for solo travellers which has grown in popularity in recent years. The perk? Travellers don’t have to pay for a single supplement fee. Please note this category is extremely limited in availability and do not exist on all ships.   Standard Size: 120 - 160 sq. ft.

Your River Cruise trips questions, answered

When will i receive my travel documents.

You can expect to receive your travel documents approximately 3-4 weeks prior to departure  once you have paid for your cruise. Your documents usually include eTicket receipts, itineraries, and other essential information for your adventure.

Are shore excursions and meals included?

Most cruises on TourRadar include breakfast, lunch, and dinner served on board, with the exception of only a few operators. Depending on your river cruise operator, shore excursions may be included in the cost of your adventure. Please contact your TourRadar Cruise Consultant for a full list of inclusions.

When and where do I board the ship?

All embarkation details are included within your final travel documents. Typically boarding starts at 3:00 pm to allow the crew enough time to prepare your stateroom and get the ship ready for your cruise. Weather, water levels, and ship scheduling can influence the final docking location for your ship, so please wait until you receive your final travel documents before you arrange flights or accommodations. 

Are transfers to and from the port included?

Some river cruise operators include complimentary arrival and departure transfers within your total tour cost. If transfers are not included, please contact your TourRadar Cruise Consultant to purchase airport transfers.

What facilities will be in my room?

Most staterooms feature a good-sized bed, towels, hairdryers, a writing desk, charging ports, and ample storage space. Some ships also have laundry facilities onboard for an extra charge. Of course, these can vary from room to room and ship to ship, so please check out the Ship Details on your adventure—or contact your TourRadar Cruise Consultant—to see the full list of inclusions.

Can I take a wheelchair onboard?

Some ships are unable to accommodate travelers in wheelchairs due to difficulties with embarking and disembarking the ship, no onboard elevators, and narrow doorways on board. For travelers who use a collapsible wheelchair, they must be stored in the stateroom, which can sometimes be a tight squeeze. Please contact your TourRadar Cruise Consultant for more information.

Can I board the ship early?

If the ship is already docked, many river cruise companies will allow you to store your luggage onboard   prior to embarkation,  allowing you to explore your embarkation destination before you begin your cruise. As the crew needs to get the ship ready for your cruise, travelers are unable to stay on the ship during this time and need to wait until the embarkation time to board the ship.

Can I cruise as a solo traveler?

Yes, absolutely! However, please keep in mind that ship cabins and staterooms are designed for double occupancy and do not offer the option to share with another solo traveler, so generally, a mandatory single supplement is required . As the name suggests, American Cruise Lines sails exclusively on the rivers and coastlines of the United States. Popular cruises visit destinations along the Mississippi River, on the Hudson River, throughout New England , and lining the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line also tours Alaska , the Southeast coast including Florida , and the Puget Sound between Washington state and the Canadian border.

What to expect: American Cruise Lines operates 19 relatively new small ships and river vessels (the average ship is about 5 years old), ranging from modern riverboats to small coastal ships to authentic paddlewheelers. Comfortable cabins can accommodate up to three people per room, and all ships offer single staterooms designed exclusively for solo travelers . Each room boasts picture windows, a spacious bathroom and – in some cases – a private balcony. In the ships' public spaces, cruisers can enjoy daily onboard entertainment like jazz and blues performances, as well as presentations by historians and area experts.

The line promises an all-American experience. As such, you can expect to find American staff aboard the American-built ships as well as food that pays homage to the destinations you will visit, from New Orleans -style andouille sausage gumbo to New England-inspired seafood boils. Previously known as Emerald Waterways, Emerald Cruises transports travelers across some of the most popular rivers in Europe and Asia, including the Danube, the Rhine, the Douro and the Mekong.

What to expect: The cruise fare covers all meals, beverages with lunch and dinner, daily shore excursions − which include more physically rigorous options called EmeraldACTIVE – Wi-Fi access and gratuities.

Emerald operates nine river vessels, all of which boast luxurious public spaces and accommodations with en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. Common-area amenities span heated indoor pools, sun decks, spa and wellness facilities, and a variety of eateries. Onboard fitness classes are available, as are other forms of entertainment. On shore, cruisers can borrow bicycles to explore historic city centers.

Typical clientele aboard Emerald Cruises' voyages includes American and British passengers around retirement age, though some younger travelers may make an appearance as well. Children 12 and older are permitted on board and on tours, but there are no kids clubs or designated activities for younger cruisers. Special rooms and dinner reservations are available for solo travelers.

What travelers say: Cruisers on recent sailings – especially first-time sailors – enjoyed their experiences on Emerald Cruises. High points included the attentive crew members and the stress-free booking and planning process. However, some felt that customer service and communication were subpar.

From the Danube to the Mekong, Australian travel company Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours offers lavish, all-inclusive river sailings with an emphasis on customization. The more upscale sister brand of Emerald Cruises, Scenic affords travelers the opportunity to do as much or as little as they want while on board and ashore.

What to expect: Enrichment activities are hand-picked by the line's "Journey Designers," and vessels provide a top-notch level of service thanks to their high crew-to-passenger ratios. In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 160 to 510 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers were pleased with their experiences aboard Scenic's vessels, praising the spacious cabins, pampering butler service, and knowledgeable crew members and tour guides. However, some travelers were particularly disappointed with the food.

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

Your choice of cruise line is equally limited. Just two companies offer multiple itineraries on U.S. rivers. American Cruise Line sails all the waterways mentioned above, while Viking offers itineraries solely on the Mississippi. Additionally, Lindblad Expeditions has introduced a food-and-wine-centric river cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Read on for our picks of the seven best U.S. river cruises. They range from seven to 15 nights and visit destinations in 16 states; itineraries take you through the colonial-heritage-rich Northeast, America's agricultural heartland and the pioneer routes of the Pacific Northwest.

American Cruise Lines' 8-night Music Cities Cruise

From Memphis blues and Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" to Kentucky bluegrass and New Orleans jazz, American Cruise Lines' eight-night Music Cities Cruise sails you through a chronology of the U.S. music scene. You'll traverse three rivers (the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland) en route from Memphis to Nashville, or vice versa.

In Tennessee's two famous music cities, you'll have a chance to visit Elvis Presley's Graceland, stroll blues club-lined Beale Street and check out the Grand Ole Opry. You'll also visit Paducah, Kentucky, and Dover and Clarksville in Tennessee, where experiences include whiskey and bourbon tasting, tours of landmark art murals and, of course, Civil War history.

While cruising, you'll enjoy nightly entertainment that celebrates the region's musical heritage. American Cruise Lines offers this itinerary on four ships from April to October 2024, 2025 and 2026. Three of the ships — American Melody, American Symphony and American Serenade — are 180-passenger modern river ships launched in 2021, 2022 and 2023, respectively. The fourth, American Splendor, is a 180-passenger paddlewheeler that debuted in 2016.

Viking's 14-night America's Great River Cruise

Want the total Mississippi experience? You can cruise the entire length of this mighty river as you visit 14 cities in seven U.S. states on Viking's two-week sailing.

Available three times a year (in July, September and October), the America's Great River cruise begins in Minnesota (either St. Paul or Red Wing) and concludes in New Orleans, allowing you to experience an intricate tapestry of American history and culture.

There's eagle spotting in Red Wing and agricultural innovation in Quad Cities, Iowa. You'll enjoy Mark Twain lore in Hannibal, Missouri, and architectural landmarks, such as the soaring Gateway Arch, in St. Louis. As you cruise the lower Mississippi, you'll delve into civil rights history in Memphis; Civil War battles and historic architecture in Mississippi's Vicksburg and Natchez; Cajun and Creole music in Baton Rouge; and the legendary culinary treats and jazz of New Orleans.

All sailings are aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Launched in 2022, it's currently the largest river ship in the U.S. and features three restaurants and an aft infinity pool.

American Cruise Lines' 8-Night Columbia & Snake River Cruise

If your vacation preferences favor mountain landscapes, wine tasting and pioneer lore, consider American Cruise Lines' eight-night Columbia & Snake River Cruise . You'll explore the Pacific Northwest from Portland, Oregon, to Clarkstown, Washington (or vice versa).

On the Pacific end of your voyage, you'll visit Astoria, Oregon — the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. This coastal city at the mouth of the Columbia River is known for its Victorian homes, wineries, brew pubs, and Lewis and Clark heritage. Next, from Kalama, Washington, you can join an excursion to visit the remnants of the area around Mount St. Helens, which suffered a devastating eruption in 1980.

In The Dalles, you can enjoy a sommelier-led tasting of Columbia Valley wines, visit Multnomah Falls or get adventurous on a river kayak tour. During a call on Richland, Washington, you can admire the scenic beauty around the confluence of the Columbia and Snake rivers at Sacajawea State Park. More wine tasting or outdoor adventure awaits on the way to Clarkstown.

American Cruise Line offers this itinerary on five ships from April to October 2024, 2025 and 2026. Three of the ships (American Song, American Jazz and American Harmony) are 180-passenger modern river ships launched from 2018 to 2020. American Pride is a 150-passenger paddlewheeler launched in 2012, and American West is a 110-passenger veteran paddlewheeler launched in 1995.

Viking's 7-night New Orleans & Southern Charms

If you've never visited New Orleans, or it's been a while, take a Mississippi River cruise that sails round-trip from the Big Easy. They offer time before or after the cruise to enjoy the city's food, music and iconic architecture — plus the ease of a round-trip flight booking. Viking's seven-night New Orleans & Southern Charms itinerary focuses solely on ports in Louisiana and Mississippi, with an emphasis on historic architecture, Cajun culture and Civil War landmarks.

From Darrow, Louisiana, you'll stroll beneath canopies of towering live oak trees to visit historic mansions or glide through the bayou. More historic architecture, along with bird-watching, awaits in St. Francisville, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi. Vicksburg, Mississippi, is home to one of the Civil War's most famous battlefields. Baton Rouge, Louisiana's capital, has something to satisfy every interest, from Cajun cuisine to tours of the restored World War II-era USS Kidd.

The cruise, which is available in November and December 2024 and January, November and December 2025, ends with a full day of exploration back in New Orleans before one last night aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi.

American Cruise Lines' 7-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise

Not only is the autumnal landscape in New York's Hudson Valley visually captivating, but the small cities and towns that line the river's shores are filled with fascinating early American history dating back more than 400 years.

Cruise the Hudson round-trip from New York City on American Cruise Lines' seven-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise . You'll visit Catskill, home to the Hudson River School Art Trail and the Olana Historic Site, or explore more actively at the Hudson River Skywalk and Kaaterskill Falls. In Albany, founded in 1609, you can tour the newly renovated New York State Capitol building, built in the late 1800s; you can also visit the New York State Museum, which dates to 1836. Feel like apple-picking? That's an option here, too.

Next, during a call at Kingston/Hyde Park, you can tour the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, home to the 32nd U.S. president's library and museum. You can also head to the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, featuring an American Beaux-Arts mansion completed in 1899. The United States Military Academy at West Point, founded in 1802, is also on the itinerary, as is Sleepy Hollow. The Sleepy Hollow legend comes to life during a tour of the local cemetery where author Washington Irving is buried. Back in the Big Apple on day seven, you'll have time to explore before saying farewell to your ship.

Sailings are available from late September to early November 2024, 2025 and 2026. Sailings are onboard either the 100-passenger American Eagle, American Liberty, American Glory or American Legend (all built in 2023 or 2024), or the older 90-passenger American Star and American Independence, launched in 2007 and 2010, respectively.

Lindblad Expeditions' 7-night Columbia & Snake Rivers: Food, Wine and History Cruise

Nature-focused cruise line Lindblad Expeditions has partnered with Food & Wine magazine to offer a new seven-night Columbia & Snake Rivers: Food, Wine and History cruise on multiple dates in April, September and October 2024; there are also sailings in March, April, September and October 2025. The voyages will sail between Portland, Oregon, and Clarkston, Washington.

Complementing the itinerary will be gourmet Pacific Northwest cuisine and more than 40 regional wines curated by an onboard culinary team. All ingredients will be sourced from within 250 miles of the ship's route. A naturalist, historian and geologist will be on hand to guide you on excursions by foot, kayak, Zodiac and jet boat.

Off-ship experiences include sampling local beer and oysters in Astoria, Oregon; visiting Multnomah Falls or hiking Beacon Rock; and having a private vineyard visit and downtown wine walk in Walla Walla, Washington.

These sailings occur on two identical Lindblad ships: the 62-passenger National Geographic Sea Lion and National Geographic Sea Bird.

American Cruise Line's 15-night Grand Ohio River Cruise

This level of relaxation can really be found in riverways just about anywhere in the world — as long as you choose a winning cruise line like those on this year's World's Best Awards list. Our reader favorites service the waterways of Europe, South America, Asia, and beyond.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

For the cruise category, respondents were asked to rate individual ships; the results were combined to generate scores for cruise lines in different categories based on number of cabins.

Ships were specifically rated on the criteria below:

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

Indeed, slow travel has become all the rage, with Travel + Leisure readers looking to river cruising to help them explore every inch of their destination at a leisurely 8.6 knots per hour.

"Our first river cruise was on Avalon Vista, and that experience turned us on to do more river cruising," one reader wrote about this year's No. 2 river cruise line, Avalon Waterways. "The trip was immediately a hit when we checked into our suite, and there was a bottle of Champagne and a box of chocolates for my birthday. Such a nice touch."

The reader also noted how spectacular the staff, food, and amenities were on board, but particularly called out the unbelievable excursion options, which on Avalon include wine tastings through France, kayaking the canals in Amsterdam, and learning something new with a cooking class through Austria.

Your thoughts on a longer (23 day+) river cruise?

Researching European river cruises and thinking that a longer cruise would be better especially if travelling from America.  I see that Viking offers a 23-day Amsterdam to Bucahrest (on the  Rhine, Main and Danube) cruise that looks interesting.  

Here are a couple of questions.....

* Since there are no "sea days" does this get a bit exhausting, with a port of call each day?  Of course, you don't have to do an excursion every day, but if you just end up being sandwiched between two other ships in a port then being in your cabin or a public space if you choose not to go ashore does not sound like much fun either.

* Do the ships have laundry services for a journey of that length?

* Are there any other longer river cruises that you recommend?

Anything else we should be thinking about regarding a longer river cruise?

You can send clothing out for laundry service with Viking---put it out when you leave for the morning excursion, and it's back before dinner.  Prices are reasonable.

Viking also has a river/ocean combo where one sails from Basel to Amsterdam on the Rhine, then get on an ocean ship for a Scandinavian cruise.  Not sure how many days that combo adds up to.

@Smokeyham , have you done a river cruise before?  I ask because some folks who are accustomed to ocean cruises do not adapt well to the more low key style of river cruises.  Many on CC have recommended a shorter (8 day) first cruise.

@Sharkster77 Thanks for the response.  I have not done a river cruise before (but have done a number of ocean cruises).   Thanks for the information about laundry services and also the advice to consider a shorter cruise for the first taste of ocean cruising.    I was just watching Gary Bembridge's (Tips for Travellers)  video about 14 things to be aware of on a river cruise , and he had some good points.

Our first river cruise was a B2B Bucharest/Budapest; Budapest/Cologne.  24 nights all together.  We had the same thought that you have, as long as we had to fly from the west coast USA we may as well take the longer trip.

Unlike an ocean trip, it doesn't really feel like "a port call every day".  In fact there are some days you are just traveling on the river, seeing the sights.  It's really more like you're staying in a moving hotel, and the day's excursions are usually not that exhausting that wears you out.

Rafting (tying up to another ship) is really not that bad.  Often there aren't many people remaining onboard either ship to seem crowded.  Now, if you have a lower deck room, yes, it's quite likely that your room/window will be looking directly into someone else's room.  But you can just hang out on deck (upper decks are pretty exposed) or in the lounge.  And having conversations with people on the other boat (if there are any) can be fun.  It's not a bad idea to be sure your curtains are closed in your room when going to bed the night before a stop (just in case you're tied up to another boat in the morning).

23 days on the rivers is a long time. I loved my river cruise of 8 days and would gladly have one of 10 days. But longer I would struggle with. It is nice being pampered but after a while the "be on board by ..." and other reglementation showed me that I am used to being an individual car traveller most of the time.

You may love 23 days but I highly recommend reading the stickies at the top of the river cruising board before you book.

One thing to consider is the seasons. There may literally not be enough water in the rivers. As a rule of thumb I would not do this cruise between end of September and end of October as the risk is high for low water in all three rivers, potentially at the same time. On the Main this does not really matter, but the Rhine and Danube (that one especially in Germany) can become impassable. Noone can even predict a month before you sail - you will get  hints in the weather forecast two weeks out - if this scenario can happen. But especially Viking are good at dealing with this and coach rides and "ship swaps" will get you past the low stretches of river. Ship swaps means you leave one ship, take the tour bus and board another ship up or down the river to continue your trip. If you are fine with that, ignore the rivers ups and downs and enjoy the "adventure".

If I am flying to Europe, it is going to be a minimum of 14 days. My last 2 trips planned for Europe (that didn't go) were around 23-30 days.

I would have no hesitations booking a 23 day trip. If I am paying for air and investing time to fly to Europe - I want to go for longer than 7-8 nights.

Excellent question.  Our first ever river cruise was eight days in the south of France, five days cruising (mostly at night) and the rest docked. It was a good cruise but given the time, effort and cost to get to Europe from North America it was short. We knew we needed to add on some DIY vacationing at the end.  We learned that an eight day cruise was too short for us. 

So, for the next two years we booked 14-day cruises: Amsterdam to Budapest with a week first in Amsterdam; and, the second cruise was Budapest to Amsterdam with a week either side. That worked out much better because we had more time to explore Amsterdam & area, Prague & area and  Budapest.

We enjoy the destination focus of river cruises and although each day can be a little regimented it was not a deal breaker.  Now should river cruising get back on track we would definitely consider Amsterdam to Bucharest without hesitation.  Of course it all depends on your personal travelling preferences. We enjoy the guided excursions, meeting fellow travelers, trying new foods & wine and the amazing scenery plus new culturally events.

Whether it is an 8, 14 or 23 days cruise, everyday is an early start and if you are joining the ship's excursion the coaches leave around 8:30am so it is a bit up and at 'em . Back to the ship for lunch most days, out again and back for a hurried shower to get to dinner at 7pm. A busy day for the most part especially if you are going on a an evening excursion too. 

As an aside: One evening we spoke with a fellow passenger and simply asked if she was enjoying her cruise and she said, quite tersely, "No! There is absolutely nothing to do on this ship! No entertainment and you have to eat when they tell you".  Yikes! She still had 10 days to go before she could escape!

It is a good idea to read the reviews on this board and go ahead and post questions because travelers here are great and will happily give you the benefit of their experiences.  Enjoy your planning and research and hopefully we will all be back on the river soon or at least soon-ish.

Your post reminded me of a former boss who retired and went on a trip to Australia from the US.  He was basically on a plane for almost 24 hours, AND ONLY STAYED IN OZ FOR A WEEK (!!!), then spent almost an entire day on a plane to come home.  I can't imagine how his internal clock dealt with that!!

We are starting to think like you---our 3 trips to Europe have been 7, 9, and 12 days.  We are now looking at tours of at least 2 weeks, rationalizing that we would essentially get two trips out of one set of flights.

I went to Japan for 5 days once. Had an amazing airfare and the person I was traveling with only wanted to do that trip as a mileage run (she had to fly in order to keep her status with the airline).

It is amazing the stuff I would do when young but won't do now that I am old (turned 50 this year).

I fly out of a Midwest small airport. No direct flights anyway except for Chicago and Denver. It really takes me forever to get anywhere. I am 8-9 hours away from a major hub so driving there is not an option either. I envy those on the East coast who can easily fly to Europe.

@Smokeyham , my advice is don't limit yourself to Viking when looking at longer river cruises.  Check out Tauck, Uniworld, Scenic, and Avalon, to name a few.  Viking gets all the press and does the most advertising, but they're not the only game in town.  

I like Gary Bembridge's videos, and think he gives accurate and realistic information about river cruising and cruising in general.  Just be aware of what you're signing up for.  I like both ocean and river cruising, but they're different experiences involving traveling in a vessel on a body of water.

Out of Boston, we have flown round trip to Dublin, Reykjavik, and Zurich for less $$ than flights to Calgary for a Canadian Rockies tour that (maybe) will occur in the fall.

I would also recommend looking at other lines. You can often get a higher line than Viking for around the same amount of money. Viking has the name recognition that people are familiar with.

Definitely will consider all of the feedback that has been provided.   We really enjoy ocean cruising and especially the relaxing sea days so @Bake apple 's comment about the days involving " the coaches leave around 8:30am so it is a bit   up and at 'em"  might not really be our style, so a shorter cruise might be a better fit. Research will continue........

There are very few "relaxing sea days" on the rivers, as you mainly cruise at night, and tour by day.  As @Bake apple says, tours generally start at 8:30 or even a bit earlier, and then back to the boat for lunch, and often back out in the afternoon for another tour.  

The Rhine cruise (Amsterdam-Basel) will have a morning or afternoon of touring the scenic Middle Rhine where the castles are.  We left Amsterdam on ours at dinner time, woke up the next morning and cruised until about lunch when we arrived in Cologne.  That day, we had a tour after lunch, then left around 11:30.  That was also our only real night in Port.  We are taking a Danube cruise next, and there will be a day sailing from Budapest to Vienna, and another part day through a scenic area.  Other than that, we are touring in the ports.  We tend to do both the morning and afternoon tours to pack in as much as we can.

Entertainment onboard is generally as good as your keyboardist.  We had a good one who could play several types of music so it was nice to sit in the evening and have a drink with friends when we wished.  Mostly though, we were back in our cabin after dinner to catch up on news from home, send e-mails, and get ready to get up for the next morning.

I haven't toured with Ama, but got an e-mail this morning where they are having select tours 2021-2022 that are offering a free added on land tour.  You may wish to look into that if you aren't comfortable touring on your own.  Gives you a bit more time overseas, but at a ending or beginning pace you can set yourself.

There isn't much to do on the ship on sea days..... Often if there is a sea day or portion of the day, there maybe scenic sites outside to see.

Our Boston to Reykjavik flight was just a little over 4 hours.  Left Boston on a 90 degree day, arrived to 45 degree temps!!  Plane had been uncomfortably warm, so the cold was refreshing!

I think you're on the right track to start with a 7 night cruise and time spent on each end, since it will be your first river cruise.  I think there is something interesting at the starting and ending spots of most cruises, and European trains are easy to figure out and go about anywhere.

We do like the longer 2 week cruises, but the cities can become a blur, and a bit tiring.  Relaxing on the boat and skipping a tour is a nice option if you like reading or some alone time.  We were on a 12 or 13 night Vantage, Budapest to Bucharest cruise, and a few couples had boarded in Amsterdam.  Their time on board was 26 nights.  For me, way too long to be in a group.

Basel to Amsterdam was a nice 14 nights cruise, and with time on each end we were overseas 24 nights, and 2 of our kids joined us for 8 of those nights off the boat wandering Belgium.  That was the gold standard of tour lengths, especially as my wife and I both work.  Plus, I only have to do 1/3 of the planning, the cruise company has the rest.

Plenty of lines to chose from, and the 'sticky threads' up top of the river home page are a wealth of info, as are the folks here, as you've seen.

Enjoy whatever you choice, it really is pretty sweet.

There are a lot of 8-day European river cruises which I think is a great way to start.  My first was Budapest to Passau on Uniworld and loved it.  Glad I spent time beforehand in Budapest, arranged by my TA.  

In 2018 we did the Bucharest to Amsterdam (24 days) on Viking.  Other than a 5 day Yangtze River cruise as part of a 21 day trip to China, this was our first river cruise.  We are Holland America 4* Mariners, and have done 5 transatlantic.  We like our sea days.  We had been traveling in Italy and France for the previous month so we made all our own travel arrangements to Bucharest and from Amsterdam to the US.  

We had to change boats in Budapest, which meant that we spent two nights in Budapest in a Viking supplied hotel.  Budapest was one of the highlights of our trip.  

Food on Viking was comparable to Holland America, except that beer and wine were included with all meals.  We ate most of our meals on the forward Aquavit Terrace.  While the Terrace menu was more limited, it provided excellent views.  In Nuremberg we skipped the ships tour and paid for a private tour.  Because we were a group of four, we were able to see more that if we used the boat's excursion.  

Sometimes we skipped the boat's tour, went into the city, explored on our own, and usually ended up sitting at a sidewalk cafe people watching.  In one city we noticed a riverside Chinese restaurant, so we skipped the boat's lunch and had a very good Asian lunch (the owners were Vietnamese) that catered to German tastes.  

We used the ships laundry, and while pricey, met our needs for some clean clothes.  

We  were traveling in early June,  There was lots of daylight, especially in Germany.  Bring some rain gear, since there were several rainy days. 

You could break them up with a stay in whichever cities you start or end....to get you off the ships for a few days

Our first Viking river cruise was on the Danube from Passau to Budapest but started in Munich for two nights, then two nights in Salzburg, almost two weeks - it was wonderful, some folks stayed in Budapest for a few more days (which I would highly recommended).  We did Viking's France's Finest which is one week on the Seine, transfer from Paris to Lyon to do another week on the Rhone, we loved it!  Great itinerary combining both rivers.  

I would try to do at least two weeks and then maybe add an extension afterwards.  

We had created our own b2b river cruises by combining Viking's Elbe river cruise ending in Prague, spending an extra night in Prague, then doing the Cities of Lights from Prague to Paris w/ an extension in Paris.  Almost a month and yes, I was stressing over the laundry being done while being gone so long.  Unfortunately after all that planning, it was canceled this past April 2020 due to the pandemic.  In hindsight I think I was trying to do too much in one trip but I really hate flying and was trying to make it worth our while going to Europe for a longer period.

Viking is now offering river ocean cruise combinations - may be worthwhile to do a rive cruise first, lots of touring each day and then get on the ocean cruise for a more relaxed itinerary (and self-service laundry facilities!).

Do your research!  Our first and only river cruise was Budapest to Amsterdam with a couple of days on our own at each end.  We were exhausted by the end and skipped some of our last day plans as we were just too tired.  (60/61) and active.  Our feet were tired too! We loved every minute of it though!

We thought the same as you....its a long way and we wanted to see as much as possible.  We have done 40 ocean cruises.  We call those vacations.  We love our sea days to relax.  River cruising is a trip.   Very little down time on a river cruise and the entertainment is minimal. Both are great just different.  

I wouldn't hesitate to do 23 nights but you'll need to pace yourself a bit.  Pick  a day or 2 to take off from touring and rest. Or you'll be really grumpy at the end.  And you do need to get up in the morning.  We didn't find it an issue because by 10 pm the whole boat is in bed. If you want to be up later then that you'll be up by yourself as we were.

Excellent advice from @cruiselvr04 .  We loved our 8 day (with a 2 day pre cruise and 1 day post) cruise, but by the time we were on the plane home, we were glad to have a day of just sitting there relaxing.  Our post day was taking a train back to Amsterdam by way of the river, so although relaxing, we did have to change trains a number of times.  We were planning where to go next on the plane home, but really needed the extra time we had booked off work to get our breath back.

Man gets jail time for 2022 boat crash on Fox River in Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. (WLUK) -- Jason Lindemann was sentenced Thursday for a boat crash on the Fox River in Oshkosh that injured more than a dozen people.

Judge Michael Gibbs sentenced Lindemann, 54, to five months in jail, followed by three years on probation. He was also ordered to perform 150 hours of community service.

In June, a jury found Lindemann guilty of two felony counts of second-degree recklessly endangering safety, 11 misdemeanor counts of failing to provide aid after a boating accident and one misdemeanor count of negligent operation of a boat. He was acquitted of one count of failing to provide aid after a boating accident.

While Lindemann did not testify during his trial, he did address the courtroom Thursday, saying he's remorseful of his actions during the crash -- and directly apologized to the owner of the paddleboat he struck.

"I want to express my deepest remorse to Mr. Loos, his crew and all on both vessels," said Lindemann. "The evening of July 9, 2022, I understand that my actions have not only had impact on the people involved, but also their families, my own and the community at large."

According to the criminal complaint, Lindemann was driving his powerboat on the Fox River when it collided with the On the Loos paddlewheel cruise boat just before 10 p.m. July 9, 2022.

The paddleboat, carrying 44 people, suffered significant damage. Despite pleas from passengers on the damaged boat and nearby witnesses, Lindemann allegedly did not stop and render aid.

"Your actions that day were cowardly, and that is what is most offensive to the boating community," said Winnebago Co. Judge Michael Gibbs on Thursday.

One victim, who did not want to be identified by name, took the stand Thursday -- where she highlighted how the crash still impacts her.

"It was one of the most scariest situations of my life. I really feel if you would have hit us a couple feet over, none of us would be here," said the victim.

After dropping injured passengers from his boat off nearby, Lindemann said he drove his boat onto Lake Winnebago, where he and the boat remained until the next morning. Law enforcement found Lindemann's boat abandoned at a nearby marina the next day.

The owner of On the Loos told police "he had a clear view of the striking boat as it approached his boat. (The victim) said he saw the front end of the striking boat go up as it picked up speed and headed directly towards the On the Loos in a head-on fashion. (The victim) stated he was not able to get out of the way but honked his horn. The striking boat veered to its right and struck the paddleboat on the lower deck area," the complaint states.

One victim told police he "heard the operator of the striking boat yell 'I'm so (expletive), I'm so (expletive)' until the boat sped away with its lights off," the complaint states.

When police discovered Lindemann's boat, there appeared to be dried blood inside the boat and a bird decoration which had been on the On The Loos.

One witness on Lindemann's boat said Lindemann had been drinking beers while on the boat. After the crash, Lindemann ignored pleas to help those on the other boat, she said.

The victims described a variety of injuries, including back pain, cuts, bruises, leg and neck injuries.

Lindemann also faces a civil lawsuit from the owners of the On the Loos.

Jackson Civil War Muster.   The Jackson Civil War Muster is the largest living history event in Michigan and the longest running Civil War event in the Midwest! Saturday and Sunday at the Cascades. ORS Race Series:   Heart of a Lion. 10th Annual Special Olympics Michigan Area 19 (Jackson County) Heart of a Lion chip timed 5K Run/Walk at the beautiful Ella Sharp Park located at 2800 Fourth St. Jackson, MI 49203. The race will be held on Sunday, August 25th at 9 a.m. with a SOMI athlete/Kids Fun Run to follow.   Packet pick up will be on Saturday, August 24th from 3-5 p.m. at the SOMI office located at 210 East McDevitt Jackson, MI 49203. Race day packet pickup will start at 7:00 am at the race location, Ella Sharp Park. Race day registration is available until 8:45 a.m. Proceeds from this race will benefit the Jackson Area 19 Special Olympics and will be used to provide year round sports training and athletic competition for persons with intellectual disabilities. Jackson Speedway and Cars-N-Q. The Jackson Speedway’s President John Lefere and Jason Stoddard, owner of CARS-N-Q, are announcing another great new event at the Jackson Speedway. Cars-N-Q, which started eight years ago by Jason Stoddard and friends, to celebrate his father’s life in the auto and promotional world, started small but has grown tremendously. Ukraine war latest: Flights suspended at Russian airport for 'safety reasons'

Kazan International Airport has suspended flights due to the threat of Ukrainian drone strikes, according to reports. It comes after an oil depot in Russia's Rostov region was set on fire by overnight aerial attacks.

Olena Zelenska says she is confident that political will and international cooperation can "work wonders" for Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

Kyiv's first lady spoke at a rehabilitation camp for children in the western city of Uzhhorod that she financially supports through her charity.

A study by the Olena Zelenska Foundation and the Kyiv School of Economics this year found that 44% of Ukrainian children show signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. 

The camp gives many children a chance to get away from the front-line cities where they live.

"This issue needs to be addressed immediately, as soon as it arises, before it grows into something more," she said.

"To ensure our children do not become a lost generation, we as adults must be not just active but also swift. 

"It's difficult, but there is still the ongoing defence of the country. However, I am confident that political will combined with international cooperation can work wonders."

Mrs Zelenska said holding Russia accountable must remain a key part of any end to the war.

"Only then will it be a victory," she said. "It may not be quick, but we need to constantly keep in mind this vision of how it should be, so that nothing is forgotten and no one is left out."

Ukrainian forces claim to have shot down a Russian Su-25 jet aircraft in the Donetsk region.

Anti-aircraft units reportedly downed the plane with a man-portable air-defence system as it was attempting to fire at Ukrainian troops.

Posting on Telegram, the Ukrainian brigade that claimed responsibility for shooting down the jet said: "The fate of the crew is still unknown, but we know for sure that it is one less problem for our infantry."

A video showing a pair of planes in the distance, one of which is shot down in mid-air, accompanied the statement.

Russia says it wants the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to take a "more objective and clearer" stance on nuclear energy after its chief visited Kursk's nuclear power plant yesterday.

Rafael Grossi toured the plant and warned of the dangers of a nuclear accident there. He said he inspected damage from a drone strike, which Russia blamed on Ukraine.

But Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said: "We see both the assessments and the work of this structure (the IAEA), but each time we want a more objective and clearer expression of the position of this structure.

"Not in favour of our country, not in favour of confirming Moscow's position, but in favour of facts with one specific goal: ensuring safety and preventing the development of a scenario along a catastrophic path, to which the Kyiv regime is pushing everyone." 

Ukraine has not responded to Russian accusations that it attacked the plant in the Kursk region, which sits around 25 miles (40km) from where fighting has been taking place.

Asked if he would condemn the damage done to the plant as "nuclear provocation" by Ukraine, Mr Grossi said: "Again, pointing fingers is something that I, as director general of the IAEA, must take extremely seriously. 

"But it is obvious that you cannot separate what we have seen here from the recent military activity that we have seen."

Russia has reportedly suspended flights from Kazan airport due to the threat of drones strikes.

State news agencies, citing Moscow's aviation watchdog Rosaviatsia, said the airport would not be receiving or sending flights from 7am (4am UK time) "to ensure the safety of civil aircraft".

One Russian Telegram channel claimed the suspension was due to the threat of drone strikes.

Kazan airport, which sits 560 miles (900km) east of the Ukrainian border, temporarily shut in June due to "security reasons".

The NATO-Ukraine Council will meet today as Kyiv briefs its allies on the status of the war.

Ukraine's defence minister, Rustem Umerov, is expected to appear via video-link for the meeting.

He will brief the council "on the battlefield situation and priority capability needs", according to the spokesperson.

For context:  The NATO-Ukraine Council was launched in 2023 as part of a three-part package of support bringing Kyiv closer to NATO.

It replaced the NATO-Ukraine Commission, which was the decision-making body responsible for developing the NATO-Ukraine relationship and for directing cooperative activities from 1997-2023.

Ukraine is recovering after Russia launched two waves of missile and drone attacks on the country on successive nights this week.

In one of its biggest air attacks since the war began, Russia hit both civilian and infrastructure targets.

Ukrainian reports say at least 13 people have died following the bombardment, with Volodymyr Zelenskyy promising retaliation.

Ukrainian drones reportedly set oil tanks on fire at a depot in Russia's Rostov region overnight.

Russian Telegram channels reported that three tanks were burning at the depot in the Kamensky district after two drones fell on the area.

In separate reports, the governor of Rostov and the Russian defence ministry said four drones were destroyed over the region overnight, with no mention made of the oil depot.

Russian emergency services continue to try to tackle a separate blaze at another oil depot in the Rostov region that was sparked by a Ukrainian strike on 18 August.

In Kursk, International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi said after inspecting the region's nuclear power plant that it was "extremely exposed and fragile" to attack, protected only by a "normal roof".

Reports said 500 troops attacked two checkpoints at Nekhoteyevka and Shebekino, which borders both Ukraine and the Russian region of Kursk, which Kyiv invaded on 6 August.
