Traveling with another person definitely has its advantages, but there are still some things you should bring along to make the trip as smooth as possible. Here are some ideas for your road trip packing list.

Roadside emergency kit.

Nobody expects issues to arise when you are on a trip, but they can happen to anyone at any time. There are certain items you should keep in your car just in case something does occur:

Spare tire & jack
Jumper cables or portable car battery
Portable air compressor
Flare/cones & reflective vest
Flashlight with extra batteries
Phone charger
First aid kit
Water and food

If you don’t have any (or most) of these items, I’d recommend getting a pre-built kit like this one and then adding in the additional items you need.

Food and drinks

Nobody wants to find out their partner gets hangry while they are on vacation.

Always keep a few snacks on hand for in between your meals, and also make sure you stay hydrated by keeping lots of water in the car as well.

Paper towels & hand sanitizer

Nothing can ruin a trip faster than spilling soda all over your boyfriend’s car…and then having nothing to clean it up.

Keep some paper towels or napkins with you for those “uh-oh” moments.

These also come in handy for other “uh-oh” moments…like needing to pee really bad but having no bathroom in sight except the woods.

Just make sure you pack out and dispose of any used items…don’t leave them in the woods or in a parking lot.

You should always keep a blanket in your car for emergencies, but you can also use it for taking a nap in the back seat (if you are lucky enough to be able to do so) and also in case you find yourself riding with someone who is always hot and blasting the A/C…even in the winter.

Phone GPS has come a long way, but it shouldn’t be your only navigation option.

I recommend keeping a road atlas in your car just in case. You don’t want a trip to go sour because your phone broke and suddenly you have no clue how you are going to get to your destination.

After the 160-hour mark, I was tired. We both were. The long highways. The cool February air. The early morning check-ins. Long drives had begun to feel like heavy-weights tethered to our feet. And I wanted to take back the symbol of the open road, wipe away the blemishes we’d made, and turn it into freedom.

Early 2020, my partner and I made a pact to explore a new state every weekend. We both had (and still have) full-time day jobs so this meant pre-packing a carry-on, hidden beneath a pile of snacks and sweaters, in the backseats of our car. After 5 PM on Fridays, we’d drive upstate or downstate (or east or west) depending on our mood and crash in a hotel around 1 AM (so we could explore a new city over the course of a short weekend).

Once February came around, the rhythm of our creaky old car’s wheels no longer lulled me to sleep and I started to realize just how long these drives were. A part of me wanted to stay awake long enough to feel the winding small town roads beneath my feet (in a quiet and meditative way) and a part of me wanted to talk until the moonlight split under the sun.

So we turned up the radio, listened to With The Fire On High by Elizabeth Acevedo , Born A Crime by Trevor Noah , and as hours passed, discussions about books slowly turned into just conversations.

Looking back on those times, I can confidently say I loved the unfiltered chats my partner and I had on the road. It brought us closer together. And long drives (that were beginning to push us to the brink) suddenly began to feel too short.

Hence, this post. Road trip questions for couples.

I’ve split these road trip questions for couples into categories so it’s easier for you to sift through. Feel free to start anywhere (with any prompt that catches your eye)! Scott and I love a good road trip as much as the next person. But while you’ll often be admiring the scenery outside the window and making pitstops as often as you can, sometimes the long stretches of road in between can get a little dull.

So… how do you make a couples road trip fun? And what do you talk about during a long car ride?

They’re great conversation starters and you might be surprised at how many topics can spin-off from just one simple question.

I’m always asking Scott weird and wonderful questions – at home, on the road, in hotels, when out to dinner – so I thought it was about time I wrote them all down for you.

How long should a road trip drive, ideally?

Ideally, you should not drive more than 6 to 8 hours a day. Driving can be draining and tiresome, too, so take frequent breaks. Stop by a roadside attraction, and don't rush; just enjoy the ride!

Can I ask her to take turns driving?

Yes, as long as she knows how to drive. Tell her your limits so she won't be surprised when you ask her to take turns driving. It could be her favorite part of the car ride because she controls it.

How long should we be dating before we go on a trip?

There are things you need to know and things you need to bring along with you to make that road trip a dealmaker, not a dealbreaker.

I’m not a relationship expert by any means, but my husband and I have taken a lot of road trips , and we’ve learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t .

Check out these road trip tips for couples to survive a long car trip, no matter where you’re going. You want this to be the start of something awesome, right?

Best Road Trip Tips for Couples

There are things to know before, during, and even after your road trip. If you’re going on a road trip, here are my best tips to ponder before taking the plunge on that first long road trip.

1. Make sure you really like each other first.

I jumped right into travel with my now-husband with a complicated Peru trip . All kinds of things went wrong, but it was because of that trip that I knew we could handle whatever came our way.

A road trip would then be less dramatic for us.

You’re going to be spending a lot of time together, just the two of you, in a confined space. Even if you’re not doing the RV thing, you’re still going to be with your partner 24/7 while on your road trip.

Ideally, your relationship has been tested and you’ve spent enough time together that you know some of each other’s quirks. You should like spending time with each other.

I’m not talking about watching Netflix for six hours in a row and not speaking to one another. Maybe you’ve already done some weekend getaways or already live together. You just know that you enjoy spending time with this human.

You shouldn’t be planning a road trip together if you’re not sure whether you like a person is what I’m saying. This doesn’t need to be your test.

2. Plan a road trip that’s not crazy long.

If you’ve never been on a road trip with your partner, this is especially important.

You don’t need to plan a weeks-long trip across the country if you’re not quite sure how your partner will handle themselves across the situations I’m describing here.

One of the best road trip tips for couples is leaving room for road stops like this one in Marfa, Texas.

A weekend away on your first road trip route is likely sufficient to get a handle on what you’re dealing with here.

You’ll also be closer to home in case things get really bad and you want to bail. I don’t wish that for you, but you don’t want to be a 26-hour drive away when you realize this person you’re sharing a small space with is a loser or worse.

Note: When I say “plan,” I really do mean “plan.” Your first road trip with a boyfriend isn’t the plan to go off the cuff and go with the flow. More on that below.

3. Choose a road trip route with some variety.

If you’re still getting to know one another, trip itineraries with some variety will allow for some additional talking points, e.g. “Look at that giant thermometer over there. It’s so…BIG!”

Fun fact: The tallest one is in Baker, California, by the way.

Staring out at miles and miles of flat prairie can get quite monotonous. The thrill of the open road wears off quickly.

If you haven’t yet honed your couples’ road trip skills, you want to keep things exciting. Anything along the coasts is a great idea.

One of the best road trip tips for couples is to enjoy views like this one of coastal California.

Whatever you plan, consider the mileage between stops, particularly if one of you is doing most of the driving. A tired driver doesn’t make for a fun road trip buddy.

4. Share the driving.

If it’s a short trip, I’ll admit that Brian does a bulk of the driving. He tends to enjoy it more, especially if we’re abroad .

On longer trips, though, we share the driving responsbilities. Depending on where you’re going, driving can be monotonous and tiring. Don’t expect your partner to handle it all unless they express how much they love driving in an explicit way.

You don’t want them exhausted upon arrival at your final destination. That won’t be fun for anyone.

5. Identify stops ahead of time.

I’m not talking about gas stations here, although it’s always good to know well ahead of time when you’ll be refueling next.

I’m talking about the things you’re excited about. Make a plan to make all of those things happen. Mark them on your Google maps if you’re not as intense about it and have an itinerary printed out.

Consider whether the places you want to stop on your road trip have hours associated with them.

If you’re really interested in some burger place, that’s awesome. You just don’t want to arrive there at 8am. They’re likely not open yet, and even if they were, I’m not sure you want that in your belly with your new mate.

One of the best road trip tips for couples is making sure you know about your partner's preferred stops, even if it's just burgers like this one.

You may need to buy tickets in advance for attractions you’re interested in. Get those ahead of time, so that you’re not stuck in line or, worse yet, faced with a big sold-out sign once you get there.

Whatever can be planned ahead should be planned ahead of time, particularly if you’re in the early stages of your relationship. It’ll lead to fewer possible hiccups for you.

6. Make your priorities known.

This one is something I highlight in my relationship guide-style travelogue on a decade’s worth of travels:

The last thing you want is for your road trip to lead to any resentment because you got to see all the stops you wanted to see, but your partner missed out on some bucket list thing they were excited about.

Conversely, you don’t want to be all cool in the planning process but wish you did one thing or another. This is a fun thing for you to do in your relationship, but it’s also likely your vacation. You want to use your budget and your time away from work in a way that you’re happy with, too.

If your partner is really all about checking out the best breweries along your route, plan a few stops that highlight those. It doesn’t need to be just about breweries if that’s not your scene, though.

If it is, sounds like compatibility is high there. Just make sure you’re sharing those designated driver duties.

Note: You also don’t need to feel bad about not sharing every single interest area with your partner. No couple I know has hobbies that are completely aligned.

Brian loves to golf , so we often plan an afternoon where he’s able to do that, particularly if we’re driving through some well-known courses. I like wine and cheese, often together, so we make sure to identify spots to consume both when we’re on the road.

I also don’t need to join him on his golf adventures. I ride along sometimes, but I’ve also hung back and explored whatever town we were in, or found a nook to catch up on the latest book I’m into.

7. Pack lots of snacks.

Wondering what to bring on a road trip with your boyfriend? It has to start with snacks.

I cannot tell you how many misunderstandings can be avoided on a road trip or really any trip just by keeping one another well-fed. Hanger is real, people.

You don’t need to pack an entire cooler of stuff, especially if you’re driving through a part of the world where food stops will be an important part of your itinerary. Some protein and some sweets are always on our road trip food list .

It’s even more fun if you’re road-tripping abroad and have some international snacks to choose from while you’re driving.

Stay well-hydrated, too. It’s just generally a good thing to do for our health, but you’ll also force bathroom stops. It’s important to stretch those legs and get some air from time to time.

8. Craft a budget and stick to it.

If you’re not married, or even if you are and still keep separate finances — I’m not judging you! — you’ll need to figure out who’s paying for what or whether you’re splitting everything down the middle.

It all comes from the same place for us, so we just spread out the credit card purchases as best we can.

If we’re traveling in a group of people , we use Splitwise. That’s an easy way for couples to keep track of shared expenses, too. You want to avoid as much resentment as possible on a road trip.

Have those awkward conversations ahead of time so that it doesn’t blow up in your faces while you’re out on the road.

You’ll also make any budget expectations known if you’ve booked accommodations ahead of time, too. It’s hard to find good deals on bookings on the fly, especially if where you’re traveling to is fairly remote.

It’s even harder if you’re headed to popular destinations at high season, e.g. summer in the national parks .

You’ll need to plan out summer accommodations in those situations well in advance and can take care of who owes what before your trip even begins.

It’s also important to talk about what your expectations are in terms of how much you’ll be spending on things like food stops or excursions along the way. Plan out your stops, even food places you want to try, so you know what you’re dealing with.

You shouldn’t be finding out that your partner’s only into fine dining when you’re already on the road.

9. Bring things along that will keep you busy.

Whether it’s the latest murder podcast or comedy special, or some easy planned road trip games, bring a few things along that will keep the both of you busy on a long road trip.

When I’m talking about road trip games, I’m not saying you should expect the driver to make some moves on a Monopoly game board.

I’m thinking you play road trip games along the lines of 21 Questions or the Alphabet Game, where you take turns naming something letter by letter within a specific category.

I can’t read in the car if I want to avoid motion sickness, so we’re usually just listening to something we brought along.

Sometimes we even save things we know will be really good like the latest murder podcast or a new album from an artist we both like for upcoming road trips. That’s just so we have something to occupy us on the road.

I usually curate a hot road trip playlist, too, which is usually a point of pride for me.

The point is, you should plan to bring some things along or have things planned that will eat up some of the long hours of driving in a fun way. It’s important to chat about what you’re both into ahead of your trip, too.

Fun fact: Brian doesn’t have the attention span to keep the thread of an audiobook so that’s not usually our jam, but I know plenty of people who are into that.

Make sure you agree on these things so you don’t bring an entire playlist of Pink songs and expect your partner to be into that for hours on end.

That’d be me. I don’t like Pink. Leave me alone about it.

10. Lean into that sweet silence.

I saw a tip on another post about staying off of your phones over the course of a road trip.

How am I going to let all my social media peeps know that I just had the largest corn dog in Nebraska?

Seriously, though, you don’t need to talk the ENTIRE time. It doesn’t mean you guys aren’t compatible. It means you’re so comfortable with each other that even your silence is comfortable.

I hate when I see things about people “running out of things to talk about” as a signal that their relationship is doomed. I think filling space with small talk is a signal that you’re doomed.

OK, that’s a little harsh.

It could just mean that a high level of intimacy isn’t there yet. You know, the kind of intimacy where you can sit on your phones and not speak to each other for hours on end. That’s the life.

Also, if you’re talking over my murder podcast on that country road I might get a little murdery myself.

Sometimes you’re just awed into silence on your road trips by what’s happening outside your window. Those moments are awesome.

11. Have a plan for tackling arguments.

We’ve gone into how to make a road trip fun . Now let’s talk about when it’s not so fun. You’re going to get into it at some point. That’s inevitable.

You’re in a confined space and you’re likely tired. Maybe you forgot to snack every three to four hours and you’re hangry.

You might snap at your partner, or vice versa. Maybe you didn’t know giving your partner driving tips was a trigger.

Actually, that one’s a trigger for a lot of people. It’s best avoided.

It’ll be OK, I promise. Take a deep breath, and consider whether this argument is worth more breath.

Sometimes you need to be the bigger person and apologize for whatever’s going on, especially if your partner is the hangry one and won’t be listening to reason until they’ve had some jerky.

It’s best if you understand your communication styles before the road trip. That includes your fighting style. I don’t care how perfect you think you are as a human being. Everybody fights.

Maybe one of you drops a hot dad joke on the argument to diffuse the tension. Maybe you both need to sit in silence for a few so you don’t say something dumb and make things worse.

Here’s another hot relationship tip: It’s OK to go to bed angry.

People who force conversations on partners who aren’t ready aren’t going to get anything good in return. Trust me.

12. Allow for some spontaneity.

It’s important to be flexible on any road trip. Things can — and likely will — go wrong while you’re on the road. You don’t have to have a Plan B for every possible scenario.

First of all, that’s impossible. I’ve tried.

Second, it doesn’t leave room for spontaneous spots along the way. You might drive past a vista that looks appealing for an impromptu picnic. Maybe there’s a unique rest stop just up there that you hadn’t planned for.

Don’t plan so aggressively that your road trip feels like a homework assignment. I need to remind myself of this one all the time.

13. Don’t put so much pressure on it.

It can be stressful planning a road trip with a new flame, especially if it’s your first one. Try not to let that get in the way of the potential for a very fun time on the road.

If things go wrong, that’s a story in itself. If they go VERY wrong to the point of questioning the relationship altogether, that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Maybe the road trip will serve as a reminder that you dodged a bullet once you’re done smarting over the loss.

Maybe you won’t grieve that relationship at all.

Such great tips! I remember my first trip with my then boyfriend (now husband) and it was stressful! You learn so much about each other very quickly and you definitely have to compromise and work out how you are going to meet in the middle!

But then if it works out, you have a travel buddy for life!

Maybe you’re setting off on a romantic weekend getaway. Or maybe you’re on a long-term van life adventure, realizing the reality of van life involves much more driving than you anticipated.

Either way, these wickedly fun road trip games for couples will keep you entertained for hours on end.

This is an oldie but a goodie, and one of the most popular games to play in the car for couples.

You and your partner take turns coming up with two truths (two things that are true about you) and a lie (something untrue about you).

These can be…

Things that you’ve done.
Things that have happened to you.
Facts about your past or yourself in general.

Try to keep them succinct — one sentence tops, like, “I once caught a fly ball at a stadium baseball game.”

Then, your partner guesses which one is the lie, and you can reveal the answer after they’ve chosen. This is a surefire way to learn new things about each other.

To up the ante, you can keep score — loser buys ice cream.

This one came from Jimmy Fallon’s True Confessions segment, and it makes for a great road trip game.

It’s similar to two truths and a lie, but with a twist.

On your turn, think of either a truth or a lie about something you’ve experienced. For example, “I once met Ryan Gosling.”

Then, your partner has 60 seconds to ask questions about it to guess if it’s true.

If it’s a lie, you have to keep creatively making up the story as if it were true. When the 60 seconds are up, your partner guesses if you are telling the truth or a lie, then you reveal whether they’re right or not.

While this car game can be a riot, it also reveals to your partner how good of a liar you are — be careful!

Another oldie, but still tons of fun.

For this game, you and your partner take turns giving each other two scenarios to choose from, phrased as “Would you rather…?”

So, for example, you can ask your partner “Would you rather skydive or swim with sharks?”

These are usually most fun with two sucky options, two epic options, or two batcrap crazy options.

It’s also another clever way to get to know each other better, especially if you explain your choices.

This is a bit different than the famous 20 Questions game. It’s one of the best road trip games for two people to get to know each other better.

Unlike 20 Questions — where you take turns choosing an object or celebrity for your partner to guess — 21 Questions is about you and your partner .

You get 21 questions to ask your partner about anything, and they must answer honestly. You can ask all 21 questions at once, or you both can alternate.

If it’s a new relationship, you might want to set some rules about topics you want to avoid. The last thing you want is to ruin the fun by asking uncomfortable questions.

Set your music to shuffle, and try to guess what song plays before your partner. To make it more challenging, you can make the rule that you need to name the song and the artist to win a point.

To play Musical Alphabet, you and your partner take turns thinking of songs and singing lyrics from them.

The catch is you start at the beginning of the alphabet, and go in alphabetical order, choosing a song that starts with that letter.

So, if you have “A”, you might choose “ A Part of Your World ,” and then your partner has “B”, and chooses, “ Baby One More Time ,” and so on.

Remember — you have to be able to sing at least one lyric from the song. So if you choose a song title that fits, but you can’t remember any lyrics from it, it doesn’t count!

Theme songs are pretty ingrained into our memories, especially when they’re from childhood shows. To play this game, take turns coming up with a theme song for your partner to sing (or at least attempt to sing).

If your partner can sing the whole theme song from memory, they get the point.

Try to pick songs from shows you know your partner has seen to keep this game fun, or even suggest a commercial jingle.

You can also use theme songs to play the “Guess the Song” game to make it more nostalgic. Type in “theme song compilation” or something similar into YouTube, and you’ll find a bunch of options.

Here’s an example:

This music game is a bit more challenging because singing isn’t allowed.

Taking turns, both you and your partner have to speak in song, carrying on a conversation only using song titles or song lyrics. The challenging part of this is to try to make the conversation make sense.

For example, you could say “I Feel Good,” and your partner can say “Because of You.”

Whoever can’t come up with a lyric, or sings it, loses.

Another version is to speak the lyrics of a song in a normal voice, and have your partner try to guess it. You’d be surprised how tricky this can be sometimes.

Creative road trip games for couples

To play this game, you and your partner take turns telling each other a fact that may or may not be true. Then, your partner tries to guess if the fact is true or false.

For example, “Did you know that North Dakota and South Dakota used to be one Dakota?” (That is actually true!)

This game works with any topic, such as pop-culture trivia, history facts, anything. And if you and your partner want to make it more personal, you can use facts about yourselves. Such as, “Did you know that I have ten cousins?”

This is one of the best travel games for couples because it helps you get to know each other (or test your knowledge of one another).

Sorry I Was Late is played by beginning with saying “Sorry I was late…” and proceeding to give the plot or a storyline from a movie. Then, your partner has to guess what movie you are describing.

For example, “Sorry I was late… I was working late at the museum of natural history, and the dinosaur exhibit tried to escape the building.” (Night at the Museum.)

You can be as direct or as indirect as you want to be. Set a time limit to make it more difficult.

Who says this is just for kids on a sleepover?

This can be one of the most fun car games. On your turn, ask your partner “truth or dare?”, and if they choose truth, you get to ask them a question they must reply truthfully to. If they choose dare, then they must do whatever you dare them to do.

Since you’re playing in a car, this game requires a bit more creativity for the dares. Think of things such as opening the window and daring your partner to sing loudly along with the radio at a stoplight.

This is one of the most fun road trip games for couples. It can get incredibly creative.

To play Fortunately/Unfortunately, the first person starts by saying something beginning with the word “Fortunately”. So, something like, “ Fortunately, I made it to work on time .”

Then, it’s your partner’s turn. They must start their sentence off with “Unfortunately”, and alter your statement with something unfortunate happening. Such as “ Unfortunately, I got fired.”

Then the next statement is another fortunately, and then unfortunately. As you go along, you’ll both be telling quite the rollercoaster of a story.

This car game is for longer road trips. It’s also less of a game, and more of a surprise for the end of your long driving days.

Every time you make a pitstop at gas stations, tourist attractions, or shops, give each other a few minutes of private time. During your private time, search for surprise road trip gifts for your partner. The more memorable, the better.

At the end of your day, play 21 Questions to guess each other’s gift. Once you figure it out, you get to have it.

This game is similar to Musical Alphabet, except there’s no singing or songs involved.

Instead, you and your partner first agree on a category. It could be famous people (you can even niche down to specific famous people, such as singers, actors, historic people, etc.), places, movies, tv shows, whatever you want.

Then, starting with the first letter of the alphabet, you’ll say something in that category that starts with the letter “A”. Then your partner says something that starts with “B” and so on.

There is a similar game that is a little spin off of the Alphabet Game.

The rules are the same except you don’t go in alphabetical order. Instead, after “A”, the next letter you start with is the last letter of the answer that was just given. For example, if the category is “animals” and you say “alligator,” the next letter your partner must start with is “R”.

It’s a more challenging game, and makes it easier for one of you to slip up. To crank up the pressure, you can count down from 10 as your partner scrambles to think of an answer.

You and your partner simply take turns thinking of something (perhaps you can choose a category first, such as a celebrity, a place, animal, etc.) and start listing off facts about said thing until your partner guesses correctly.

This game helps you learn a lot about each other based on the knowledge you each have on certain topics.

If you don’t want to come up with the topics yourself, download some trivia road trip apps before you set off.

For this game, you and your partner settle on a category, such as car brands, countries, actors, movies, anything really.

Then, taking turns, you and your partner both say things in that category.

So, if you choose car brands, you might start with “Audi”, your partner chimes in “Honda,” and you’ll go back and forth like that. When someone pauses for more than 5 seconds, they lose.

For this game, we’re doing a little variation of the Alphabet Game. But instead of choosing a topic and naming people or things for each letter of the alphabet, you and your partner give each other compliments.

Alternating every letter in alphabetical order, you start with “A” and give your partner a compliment that starts with “A”, then your partner gives you a compliment that starts with “B”, and so on.

It requires you both to get creative (especially when letters get to “X” and “Z”) as well as being a fun, romantic game.

This is a really popular game to play even outside of the car.

The rules are simple: give your partner three people, and ask them to decide which of the options they’d kiss, marry, and kill.

A good piece of advice is to make sure you don’t use people that either of you personally know. There’s a huge chance someone may get offended if you’re playing with your friends as options.

So, instead, use actors, singers, historical figures, heck, even cartoons like Mickey and Minnie Mouse can make it even more fun.

Pretty self-explanatory, but Finish the Sentence is played by finishing each other’s sentences.

On your turn, come up with half a sentence, such as, “Sue went to the store to…” and then your partner finishes the sentence. Then you continue the story with another half of a sentence, and your partner continues after that.

You can improvise the game completely, or you both can decide on a character, setting or situation to start things off. You can even make it a romantic story to make it more of a couples game to play.

This is a “background car activity” you can play simultaneously with other games, and it’s super easy.

Before you leave, write down a list of 10-20 things you predict to see during your trip. These can be as mundane or as strange as you want — the stranger, the harder.

Here are some ideas to get you started: 🚗 Someone mowing their lawn. 🚗 Someone running a red light. 🚗 Someone with the exact same car as you. 🚗 Someone singing or dancing like crazy in their car. 🚗 A sign-flipper. 🚗 A hitchhiker.

Try to be the first person to call out the scenario when you see it, then check it off your list.

This isn’t the most exciting road trip activity in the world, but it keeps your mind alert.

These couple’s road trip games will keep you occupied for hours, but you can only play the Alphabet Game so many times without getting bored.

France Confronts Horror of Rape and Drugging Case as 51 Men Go on Trial

A man is accused of drugging his wife and then inviting dozens of men to rape her over almost a decade. The questions raised by the case have unsettled the country.

For years, she had been losing hair and weight. She had started forgetting whole days, and sometimes appeared to be in dreamlike trances. Her children and friends worried she had Alzheimer’s.

But in late 2020, after she was summoned to a police station in southern France, she learned a far more shattering story.

Her husband of 50 years, Dominique Pelicot, had been crushing sleeping pills into her food and drink to put her into a deep sleep, the police said, and then raping her. He had ushered dozens of men into her home to film them raping her, too, they said, in abuse that lasted nearly a decade.

Using the man’s photographs, videos and online messages, the police spent the next two years identifying and charging those other suspects.

On Monday, 51 men, including Mr. Pelicot, went on trial in Avignon, in a case that has shocked France and cast a spotlight on the use of drugs to commit sexual abuse and the broader culture in which such crimes could occur.

The accused men represent a kaleidoscope of working-class and middle-class French society: truck drivers, soldiers, carpenters and trade workers, a prison guard, a nurse, an I.T. expert working for a bank, a local journalist. They range in age from 26 to 74. Many have children and are in relationships.

Most are charged with raping the woman once. A handful are accused of returning as many as six times to rape her.

The victim, Gisèle, who has divorced her husband and changed her surname since his arrest, is now in her 70s.

Since his arrest, Mr. Pelicot, 71, has “always declared himself guilty,” said Béatrice Zavarro, his lawyer. “He is not at all contesting his role.”

Other defendants have denied the rape charges, with some arguing that they had the husband’s permission and thought that was sufficient, while others claimed they believed the victim had agreed to be drugged.

When the police showed Gisèle some of the photographs they say her husband had carefully classified and stored, she expressed deep shock. She and her husband had been together since they were 18. She had described him to the police as caring and considerate.

She had no memory of being raped, by him or the other men, only one of whom she recognized, she told the police, as a neighbor in town.

The first time she will consciously witness the rapes, her lawyer Antoine Camus says, will be in the courtroom when the video recordings are played as evidence.

The trial comes at a moment of heightened scrutiny of the handling of sexual crimes in the country. Rape is defined in French law as an “act of sexual penetration” committed “by violence, coercion, threat or surprise.” A number of feminist lawmakers want to amend that wording to say explicitly that sex without consent is rape, that consent can be withdrawn at any time, and that consent cannot exist if sexual assault is committed “by abusing a state impairing the judgment of another.”

“There is a kind of naïveté on the topic of predators in France, a kind of denial,” said Sandrine Josso, a lawmaker who led a parliamentary commission into what is known in France as “chemical submission” — drugging someone with malicious intent. She started the commission after she says she became the victim of a drugging last year. A senator is being investigated on accusations that he slipped Ecstasy into her Champagne .

Ms. Josso hopes that the Avignon trial will draw attention to the use of drugs to prey on women, and also shed light on the wide profile of predators. “They could be your neighbors, without falling into paranoia,” she said.

Mr. Pelicot seemed like a classic man next door. He was a trained electrician, an entrepreneur and an avid cyclist. His middle child and only daughter, Caroline Darian, her pen name, described him as a warm and present father in a book published in 2022 about the case, “And I Stopped Calling You Papa.” She tried to turn her family trauma into action, forming a nonprofit association, “Don’t Put Me to Sleep,” to publicize the dangers of drug-facilitated crimes.

Her father, she wrote, was the one who drove her to school, picked her up late from parties, encouraged her and consoled her. Her mother was the stable breadwinner, working as a manager in a Paris-area company for 20 years.

When Gisèle retired, they moved to a house with a big garden and pool in Mazan, a small town northeast of Avignon. The couple regularly hosted their three children and grandchildren for summer vacations peppered with late dinners on the terrace, where the family debated, held dance competitions and played Trivial Pursuit.

“I think of us as happy,” his daughter wrote. “I thought my parents were.”

None of them harbored any suspicions. Then, in 2020, three women reported Mr. Pelicot to the police for trying to use his camera to film up their skirts in a grocery store, and he was arrested.

The police seized his two cellphones, two cameras and his electronic devices, including his laptop, before releasing him on bail.

On the devices, the police say they found 300 photographs and a video of an unconscious woman being sexually assaulted by many people. They said they also found Skype messages in which the man boasted of drugging his wife and invited men to join him in having sex with her while she was unconscious.

Over the course of their investigation, the police found more than 20,000 videos and photographs, many of them dated and labeled, in an electronic folder titled “abuse.” The timeline they built began in 2011. The list of suspects grew to 83.

Two months after his initial arrest, Mr. Pelicot was arrested again and charged with aggravated rape, drugging and a list of sexual abuse charges. He is also accused of violating the privacy of his wife, daughter and two daughters-in-law on suspicion of illegally recording, and at times distributing, intimate photos of them.

If he is found guilty, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

During interviews with the police, the details of which were included in an overview of the case by the investigative judge, Mr. Pelicot said he began drugging his wife so he could do things to her, and dress her in things, that she normally refused. Then he started inviting others to participate. He said he never asked for or accepted money.

He met most of the men, the investigating judge’s report stated, in a chat room on a notorious, unmoderated French website implicated in more than 23,000 police cases in France alone from 2021 to 2024. It was finally shut down, and its owner arrested, in June after an 18-month investigation stretching across Europe.

The chat room where most of the men met Mr. Pelicot was called “a son insu,” which means “without their knowledge.”

Over the years, Mr. Pelicot told the police, he developed rules for the visitors to ensure that his wife did not wake: no smoking or cologne; undress in the kitchen; warm hands under hot water or on a radiator, so their cold touch would not jolt her. At the end of each night, according to the investigating judge’s report, he cleaned his wife’s body.

Of the 83 suspects, the police identified and charged 50.

Only one of the men is not charged with rape, assault or attempted rape of Mr. Pelicot’s wife. Instead, that man is accused of following the same model, and drugging his own wife to rape her. Mr. Pelicot is also charged with raping the man’s wife while she was drugged.

Five of the men also face charges for possessing child sexual abuse imagery.

Mr. Pelicot is also being investigated in the rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman in 1991 and the attempted rape of a 19-year-old in 1999. He admitted to the attempted rape, according to Florence Rault, the lawyer representing the victims in both cases, but denies any involvement in the 1991 homicide.

The story has prompted some soul-searching among doctors, since Gisèle had visited gynecologists and neurologists over a series of mystifying symptoms, but had received no diagnosis, according to her daughter.

“What I found disturbing for us doctors was that no doctor considered this hypothesis,” said Dr. Ghada Hatem-Gantzer, a well known obstetrician-gynecologist and expert in violence against women. She and a pharmacist, Leila Chaouachi, have now developed training for doctors and nurses on the symptoms that victims of drug-facilitated assault can experience.

Contrary to popular belief, most cases occur at home, not at bars, said Ms. Chaouachi, who runs annual surveys on such offenses in France. Most victims are women, the surveys show, and around half of the victims do not remember the attack, because of blackouts, she said.

In the case going to court in Avignon, some of the accused admitted guilt to the police. According to the investigating judge’s report, many claimed that they were tricked into having sex with a drugged woman — lured by a husband for a three-way encounter and told she was pretending to sleep, because she was shy.

Several said they believed that she had consented to being drugged and raped as part of a sex fantasy. Some said they did not believe it was rape, because her husband was there and they believed he could consent for both of them.

“It sends shivers down the spine regarding the state of affairs in French society,” said Mr. Camus, who is also representing Ms. Darian and many other members of the family. “If that’s the conception of consent in sexual matters in 2024, then we have a lot, a lot, a lot of work to do.”
