7 Best Cheap Travel Insurance Companies in July 2024

Profile photo of Sean Cudahy

Many, or all, of the products featured on this page are from our advertising partners who compensate us when you take certain actions on our website or click to take an action on their website. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Finding the cheapest travel insurance is often a priority for travelers hoping to protect themselves and their finances while away from home.

But is it better to err on the side of affordable travel insurance or opt for a more comprehensive plan? That depends on your needs .

On average, a comprehensive plan that covers some combination of trip cancellation and interruption costs, medical coverage and baggage protection (and perhaps a number of other things) will cost you 5%-10% of what you paid for the trip, according to NerdWallet partner Squaremouth, a travel insurance marketplace.

That means a comprehensive policy for a trip that costs you $3,000 could run you anywhere between $150 and $300. Factors like the cost and length of your trip, the age of the travelers and how much protection you want can significantly influence what you pay for your plan.

Ultimately, Squaremouth recommends “the least expensive policy that offers the coverage [travelers] need.”

Factors we considered when picking cheap travel insurance plans

We considered a few factors as we looked for the most affordable travel insurance plans.

Price: If your goal is to find cheaper travel insurance, you want the price to be affordable.

Breadth of coverage: The best budget travel insurance is typically going to be a plan that offers a wide range of protections at an affordable cost, ensuring you’re protected with at least some coverage for a wide range of scenarios.

Uniqueness or customizability : While many travel insurance plans have similar protections, some stand out for particular coverage that can be helpful to certain travelers, like those needing to Cancel For Any Reason , those going on a cruise, or travelers with preexisting health conditions. We didn’t spring for the priciest plans with broad, deep coverage; instead, we picked those that meet a sort of budget "sweet spot" when it comes to cost efficiency.

» Learn more: Is travel insurance worth getting?

An overview of the best cheap travel insurance plans

We looked at travel insurance quotes for a hypothetical 10-day trip to Italy in October 2023. The traveler is a 40-year-old man living in North Carolina who spent $2,000 on the trip, including airfare.

Reliable but cheap travel insurance providers

1. axa assistance usa (silver plan: $70).

sabb premier travel insurance

Why we picked it:

The $500 missed connection benefit is great for cruise and tour participants. It covers additional transportation, accommodations and meal costs when you miss a cruise or tour departure.

Full trip cancellation and interruption coverage, along with up to $25,000 for out-of-pocket medical costs and baggage coverage.

Among the lowest prices we found.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more than AXA's $70 Silver plan, a Gold plan only costs $19 more and gets you deeper coverage amounts and up to $35,000 in collision rental car insurance.

2. Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (ExactCare Value plan: $56)

sabb premier travel insurance

Cheapest plan we found while still offering a wide array of protections.

Includes a preexisting medical condition waiver.

Add-on rental car collision coverage optional for $10 per day. You can pick how many days you want the additional coverage — it’s not all or nothing.

At $56, this plan comes in at less than 3% of the $2,000 trip cost.

3. IMG (iTravelInsured Lite plan: $77)

sabb premier travel insurance

Treats COVID-19 like any other illness, which is to say, if your claim accepts flu, strep throat or appendicitis as an acceptable, covered condition, the coronavirus is, too.

Covers costs related to trip interruption up to 125%

Higher than normal limits on dental expenses, at $1,000. If your teeth are your Achilles heel (or your biggest fear), this plan might be for you.

The iTravelInsured Lite plan doesn’t offer some of the bells and whistles that other plans do, like rental car coverage , Cancel For Any Reason coverage or waivers for pre-existing conditions. But you’ll have relatively solid across-the-board trip protections.

4. John Hancock (Silver plan: $93 for a mid-tier plan)

sabb premier travel insurance

Mid-level plan (as opposed to a basic plan) at an affordable price for travelers who want more coverage without paying too much.

Includes an optional Cancel For Any Reason add-on for travelers wanting flexibility. It is a bit pricey, at half the cost of the insurance ($46.50 extra for a $93 plan).

Reimburses up to $1,000 for lost baggage , far more than many basic plans.

Add-on rental car coverage for $9 per day.

At $88, John Hancock’s basic (Bronze) plan isn’t particularly affordable. But for just $4 extra, you can tap into the benefits of a mid-tier plan at still less than 5% of the total trip cost.

5. Nationwide (Essential plan: $76)

sabb premier travel insurance

Includes a preexisting conditions waiver.

Add-on rental car coverage for $90.

Covers trip interruption at 125% of the trip cost while providing comprehensive emergency medical and baggage coverage.

6. Seven Corners (Basic plan: $75)

sabb premier travel insurance

On top of standard trip protections, it includes a relatively affordable Cancel For Any Reason option for $31.50 extra.

If you plan to rent expensive sporting equipment, you might consider paying $10 extra to cover lost, damaged, stolen or destroyed gear.

COVID-19 coverage reimburses you for costs incurred if you have to quarantine .

Rental car coverage comes in at an affordable $7 per day.

Seven Corners’ Basic plan stands out because it offers a little bit of everything, appealing to athletic travelers, those who need affordable trip protections, those who want the flexibility to cancel for any reason and those still concerned about getting quarantined due to COVID-19.

7. Travelex Insurance Services (Basic plan: $71)

sabb premier travel insurance

Straightforward: What you see is what you get. This plan’s coverage has fewer rules and caveats than many.

While not sporting the highest coverage amounts, it offers a solid range of protections to ensure you get at least something back when your travel is disrupted or you have a medical emergency.

Offers add-on rental car coverage for $10 per day.

At $71, the Travelex Basic plan’s cost is just over 3% of the $2,000 trip’s cost.

If you want to get travel insurance at the cheapest possible rate, here’s a trick. Put $0 as your trip cost, Stan Stanberg, co-founder of comparison site Travelinsurance.com said in an email.

“When excluding trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage the cost of a travel insurance plan goes down significantly,” Stanberg said.

That means you won’t get reimbursed if you need to cancel your trip or if it gets interrupted. But you may still have access to the plan’s medical, trip delay , missed connection, baggage and other protections.

You’ll often find comprehensive travel insurance plans cost 5%-10% of your total trip cost, according to Squaremouth. This will often get you full trip cancellation and trip protection, baggage protection, emergency medical coverage and often other benefits.

Typically, the more you pay, the broader and deeper the coverage.

For many plans, you can purchase travel insurance up until you depart. However, to get access to the most protections possible, booking two days to two weeks after making your initial deposit is the best rule of thumb.

That means you won’t get reimbursed if you need to cancel your trip or if it gets interrupted. But you may still have access to the plan’s medical,

, missed connection, baggage and other protections.

Covid Quarantine insurance for US citizens

According to changes from June 2022, US Citizens who have traveled overseas are no longer required to get tested for COVID19 before traveling back to the US. This was earlier mandatory by the US government, and this requirement is currently under abeyance based on the trajectory of the pandemic. This COVID19 test was required both for unvaccinated and for vaccinated travelers. However, despite the Covid test not being compulsory, it is prudent for US citizens to buy travel insurance with Covid quarantine expenses included given the pandemic and different Covid sub-variants.

US travelers can either buy US Covid quarantine coverage trip insurance (includes coverage for cost of the trip), or Covid quarantine travel health insurance (insures only the health of the traveler and is cheaper than trip insurance).

Is Moscow Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Moscow, Russia

On Feb. 24, 2022, Russia invaded its neighbor country Ukraine, starting a war between these two countries.

This act of invasion caused many Ukrainians to flee their country and seek shelter in places like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, etc…

At this time, we recommend no travel to Russia or Ukraine, or any neighboring countries for your own safety.

Russia : Safety by City

  • Nizhny Novgorod
  • Novosibirsk
  • Saint Petersburg
  • Yekaterinburg

Moscow, the capital of Russia, is a political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of this huge country.

It’s one of the most visited places in Russia, and for good reason.

The best-known parts of Russia are concentrated precisely in the urban areas and cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Moscow’s history attracts the most tourists, as they are fascinated by it is a surreal and sometimes brutal but nevertheless thrilling and jaw-dropping national story.

In this city, visited by 17 million tourists annually, the history, told in its numerous museums, some of which are the world’s greatest, interacts with modernity.

For example, in the Garden of Fallen Monuments (Fallen Monument Park), you can see entire clusters of modern art contrasting with the very non-conceptual Communist monuments.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Moscow

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

Generally speaking, Moscow today is safe as much as other cities in Europe, despite its problematic history with criminal activity in the 90s. However, if you’re planning on traveling to Moscow, keep in mind that you should always keep your guard up and remain aware of your surroundings, just in case.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

Generally speaking, transportation in Moscow is safe, but you should bear in mind that kidnappings have been known to happen, mostly in unlicensed taxis, so be careful when hailing one on the streets. Keep in mind that the most dangerous areas where small crime tends to occur are the underground walkways, called “perekhods”. Only use official services like Yandex Taxi, Uber or Gett taxi.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: HIGH

Pickpocketing is very common in Moscow, and surprisingly it is mostly performed by groups of children. Pay attention to your belongings, don’t leave them in plain sight and be especially careful in crowded places like stations or near tourist attractions.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW

Moscow isn’t particularly susceptible to natural disasters. Some blizzards and snowstorms are possible during winter which can affect the traffic and delay your flights. During winter, be prepared to face the below-freezing temperatures.

MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM

The situation improved drastically when it comes to kidnappings and muggings. Generally, never accept free drinks or food when you’re in a club or a bar. Drink spiking and then attacking and robbing the victim have been reported on numerous occasions.

TERRORISM RISK: HIGH

After the recent terrorist attack in the subway in St. Petersburg the probability of this situation happening again in Moscow is very high.

SCAMS RISK: HIGH

There are many scams in Moscow, usually performed by children trying to distract you and then steal some money from you. Never talk to strange kids on the street. Also, you should avoid playing street gambling games.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Women are generally safe in Moscow, though you should avoid finding yourself alone in clubs or bars, and of course, apply all normal precaution measures like avoiding remote and poorly lit streets and areas.

  • So... How Safe Is Moscow Really?

Moscow experienced a rise when it came to crime rates during the 1990s.

Violent crime, as well as petty crime and scams,  had increased, but the biggest part of the violence was within the criminal groups themselves, and it didn’t affect foreigners that much.

However, it decreased since the 90s, so right now, for tourists, Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, it’s even less so.

The crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.

Also, you can count on the officials to be uncorrupted – don’t ever try to bribe them: you will be charged with bribery.

Bear in mind that if you are a member of the LGBT community, there is no reason to avoid Moscow altogether but you should refrain from any public displays of affection.

As of June 2013, “homosexual propaganda to minors” is prohibited, which means that any discussion of gay rights or homosexuality issues in the presence of minors is punishable by law.

While you walk around Moscow, you might encounter police officials that may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow.

You shouldn’t have any problems with this, because if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper.

  • How Does Moscow Compare?
  • Useful Information

Most countries do need a visa to enter Russia, and if you’re a U.S. citizen you must possess both a valid U.S. passport and a bona fide visa issued by a Russian Embassy or Consulate. None of the nationals that do need a visa can acquire one upon arrival, so make sure you apply for your visa in advance. If you are not sure about your visa status, visit www.doyouneedvisa.com which will let you know whether or not you need visa based on your nationality and the country you want to visit.

The Russian ruble is the official currency in Moscow. ATMs are widespread throughout the country and credit cards are accepted everywhere.

Moscow has a highly continental influenced climate characterized by warm to hot and dry summers and extremely cold, freezing winters with temperatures as low as -30°C – sometimes even lower, with heavy snowfall.

Sheremetyevo International Airport is the Russian busiest international airport. It is located in Molzhaninovsky District, Northern Administrative Okrug, in Moscow, about 29 km northwest of central Moscow.

Travel Insurance

Just like anywhere else, we advise getting travel insurance when traveling to Moscow, because it would cover not only medical problems but also theft and loss of valuables.

9 Reviews on Moscow

That's just not true.

The person who wrote the text obviously have never been in Moscow and in Russia at all. This is ridiculous. Even about pickpocketing, the risk at most is medium, mugging is zero in historical places but is pretty high in sleeping quarters

Your rating is only two stars for safety though? So I am confused. Are you rating the article to be in poor taste?

I went to Moscow in 2021. I enjoyed the trip. I felt there were “unsafe areas” so I avoided them. So long as you know where you are going and don’t insult the locals, you should be fine.

51% safe?! Is this out of date?

Moscow and Russia in general are MUCH SAFER than Paris or London, yet those latter are more than 15 points ahead?!

Hell, it’s even admitted in the above text: “Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, IT’S EVEN LESS SO.” Yeah, you bet! And then: “the crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.” So why the low rating? I don’t get it.

Also, the latest terrorist attack in Moscow happened in 2010… so how can you honestly say that the risk is still “high”? Especially for the fact Russia is very much on the edge when it comes to fighting terrorism domestically and over the world.

Sure, it might not be ideal everywhere in Moscow, but it’s WAY SAFER than in Paris, especially at night. You just can’t go out in Paris after the evening anymore, in most areas (I got assaulted for no reason at Châtelet-les-Halles and taking the RER train at dark is becoming more and more risky)… while in Moscow, chances are that you’ll see girls in miniskirts walking home while quietly singing. Or maybe you’ll stumble upon some gorgeous lady asking you for a lighter and then giving you her number for a coffee the next day. So very dangerous!

I sense a serious bias, here. Is it because of that LGBT thing? Could you pick a more extreme case? Yeah, you can totally be gay in Russia, just be so in private. There even are transsexuals, but this is a traditional and respectable country, so you should respect their choice of not publicizing various sexual lifestyles.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are safe

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are very safe in my opinion! I’ve been to both cities visiting family! There are so many people out on the streets and on public transportation- I felt very safe! You need to change your ratings!!

Any update on Covid-19 to visit Moscow

I visited 118 country and Moscow one of the safest city I have been, st Petersburg as well, I read this article hoping to find any update on covid-19 restrictions upon arrival, so if anyone can update I’m planning to visit Moscow again but I need to know if quarentain is required or mandatory, anyone can share, cheers.

In Russia nobody cares, masks off. I dont know if fiew thousands of infected per day are high for you though. I was never arrested for not wearing mask, but you have to have it on you. Sometimes cops ask to put mask, you just do that and everything ok, some shops can refuse to do service if you dont have mask. I assume they pressured by boss, so just put on mask, they can give you gloves and dont cause any problems.

Written by someone who never visited Russia

A veer biased review. Moscow or St. Petersburg for being such brilliant truly cosmopolitan cities are extremely safe. Pickpocketing in Russia?! By children?! Who wrote this? Clearly by someone who has never been to the great country of Russia.

Have never been there. But wish me well

Bias review, Moscow is much safer than that!

This review is so bias and just wrong! First of all apart from being a political, scientific and etc center, it is an absolutely beautiful city and a very culturally rich city. For tourists there’s a huge range of delicious food, amazing shopping, a lot of cultural activities, and all sorts of entertainment. I’ve travelled there in December 2019, and most of the time I spent walking around and exploring by myself, be it during day time or night, nothing happened to me once. I mostly used subways and sometimes taxi, both safe. Just have a common sense when it comes to safety and you’ll be fine. You need to travel there at least once in a lifetime, it’s a completely different experience and it’s a beautiful one, NOT a communistic terrorist epicenter as some describe it to be.

Join us as we navigate the landscape of travel insurance, shedding light on why it matters, what it should cover, and how you can tailor it to your specific needs when traveling to Russia.

Why Russia Travel Insurance?

Coverage Types

  • Medical Coverage: Essential for unexpected health issues.
  • Trip Cancellation: Protects against unforeseen events disrupting travel plans.
  • Baggage Loss/Delay: Safeguards belongings during transit.

Exclusions and Limitations: Understanding the limitations and exclusions of a policy is crucial to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Why Travel Insurance Matters in Russia

  • Unique Travel Challenges: Russia’s vastness and diverse activities present unique challenges that necessitate robust insurance coverage.
  • Legal and Healthcare Considerations:  Navigating Russia’s legal requirements and healthcare system underscores the importance of having reliable travel insurance.

Reasons To Buy Russia Travel Insurance From Any Country

Russia travel insurance is essential for anyone planning a visit to this vast and diverse country. Whether you’re travelling for leisure, business, or exploring the rich cultural heritage of the Russian Federation, having the right insurance coverage is crucial.

When obtaining a Russian visa, it’s a mandatory requirement to provide proof of medical insurance for the duration of your stay. This medical insurance for Russia, often referred to as travel medical insurance, ensures that you are financially protected in case of unexpected medical expenses during your trip.

Here are some key reasons to consider purchasing Russia travel insurance:

Mandatory for Russian Visa: To obtain a Russian visa, you will need to provide evidence of medical insurance coverage. This requirement is in place to ensure that visitors have access to adequate healthcare services while in the country.

Healthcare Expenses Coverage: In the event of a medical emergency or illness during your stay, having travel medical insurance ensures that your medical expenses will be covered, including hospitalization, doctor’s fees, and medication costs.

Compliance with Regulations: Having the appropriate insurance policy for Russia ensures that you comply with the regulations of the Russian Federation. Failure to provide the necessary documentation, including valid medical insurance, could result in difficulties during your travel.

Protection for the Unexpected: Travel insurance not only covers medical emergencies but also protects against unexpected events such as trip cancellations, lost baggage, or flight delays. This helps you minimize financial losses in unforeseen circumstances.

Peace of Mind: Knowing that you have comprehensive insurance coverage for the duration of your stay in Russia provides peace of mind. You can enjoy your trip with the confidence that you are protected against unforeseen events that may disrupt your plans.

Covers Various Aspects: A good Russia travel insurance policy should cover a range of aspects, including medical emergencies, trip cancellations, baggage loss, and more. This comprehensive coverage ensures that you are prepared for various situations that may arise during your travels.

Ease of Obtaining Treatment: With the right insurance, you can access quality healthcare facilities in Russia without worrying about the financial implications. This is especially important in a foreign country where navigating healthcare systems may be challenging.

Legal Requirements: Besides being a visa requirement, having the appropriate travel insurance is also a legal requirement in Russia. It is advisable to familiarize yourself with the specific insurance regulations of the Russian Federation to ensure compliance.

Russian Medical Insurance Requirements: Visa and Entry Information

When planning a trip to Russia, it is imperative to be aware of the visa and entry requirements, particularly the mandatory medical insurance. The Russian Federation stipulates that all visitors must have valid medical insurance coverage for the duration of their stay, and this requirement is closely tied to the visa application process.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to understanding the significance of medical insurance for Russia:

Russian Visa Application: To apply for a Russian visa, individuals must provide evidence of medical insurance coverage. This insurance, often referred to as travel medical insurance or Russian travel insurance, is a key component of the visa application process.

Mandatory Requirement: The medical insurance requirement is not just a formality; it is a mandatory provision enforced by the Russian government. This is in place to ensure that visitors have access to necessary medical services during their stay in the country.

Coverage for the Unexpected: Medical insurance for Russia goes beyond visa compliance; it serves as a safety net for unforeseen circumstances. In the event of a medical emergency, the insurance policy covers expenses such as hospitalization, doctor’s fees, and prescription medications.

Comprehensive Insurance Policies: When selecting a policy, ensure it provides comprehensive coverage, including not only medical emergencies but also other aspects like trip cancellations, lost baggage, or travel delays. This ensures holistic protection against various potential disruptions.

hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Legal Compliance with the Russian Federation: Adhering to the medical insurance requirement is not just a matter of convenience but a legal obligation. Failure to provide proof of the necessary insurance may result in complications during the visa application process or upon entry into Russia.

Ensuring Health and Safety: Having valid medical insurance enhances the safety and well-being of travellers. It guarantees access to quality healthcare services in Russia, contributing to a smooth and secure travel experience.

Understanding the Insurance Policy: Before obtaining insurance, it’s crucial to understand the terms and conditions of the policy. Familiarize yourself with the coverage limits, inclusions, and exclusions to ensure that the insurance meets the specific requirements of the Russian Federation.

Peace of Mind for Travelers: Travelers can embark on their journey with confidence, knowing that they are adequately covered in case of any health-related contingencies. This peace of mind enhances the overall travel experience.

In summary, obtaining medical insurance in Russia is not just a visa prerequisite; it is a fundamental aspect of responsible travel planning. It ensures compliance with the regulations of the Russian Federation, provides financial protection in emergencies, and contributes to an overall safer and more enjoyable travel experience. Travelers are advised to carefully choose a suitable insurance policy that aligns with their needs and the specific requirements of their trip to Russia.

Moscow  is the capital and largest city of Russia and is set on the Moskva River in Central Russia.

Moscow’s importance to Russia goes well beyond its political significance. It is a city of more than 12 million people and is well known for its artistic endeavors, including ballet, symphonies, and art. Onion-shaped domes of historic churches fill the skyline, while the impressive Red Square, is one of the largest squares in the world. Other sights that shouldn’t be missed are the statues of Lenin and Stalin, controversial leaders in the 20th century. Further evidence that Moscow’s past wasn’t always squeaky clean can be seen in the Gulag and Cold War museums.

Russian president met Syria's al-Assad in Moscow, state media says

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Russian President Vladimir Putin his met Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad in the Kremlin to discuss the situation in the Middle East, state media said on Thursday.

The situation in the region is worsening, Putin said in a video fragment released by the Kremlin.

According to the state-run Syrian News Agency (SANA), Putin said the situation was becoming more tense, adding that "the discussions with President Assad are an opportunity to discuss all possible developments and scenarios."

SANA quoted al-Assad as saying that both Syria and Russia had gone "through difficult challenges and were always able to overcome them."

For years, Russia has been al-Assad's most important ally alongside Iran. The Syrian president last met Putin in Russia in March 2023.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said afterwards that the two politicians had discussed a variety of issues.

He left open whether the talks had touched upon a possible meeting between al-Assad and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

After years of poor diplomatic ties between Turkey and Syria, there have been signs of rapprochement between the neighbouring states for more than a year now.

Turkey has been a key backer of the Syrian opposition and anti-government rebels in the uprising that started in Syria in 2011. Turkey has also established military bases in north-west and northern Syria.

Erdogan severed diplomatic relations with Damascus in 2012 and has described al-Assad as a "murderer." Al-Assad has so far rejected any rapprochement on his part as long as Turkish troops occupy northern Syria.

Introduction to the Citi Strata Premier

The "new" Citi Strata Premier℠ Card is one of the best travel credit cards in the mid-tier credit card market. A rebrand of the former Citi Premier, the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card now comes with travel insurance and huge bonuses for bookings within the Citi travel portal. You'll also have access to many ways to use your points through Citi Travel and the issuer's airline and hotel partners, all for an annual fee under $100.

The mid-tier rewards card market is already quite full, with contenders from American Express, Wells Fargo, Chase, and Capital One. However, the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card still comes out ahead in several categories, especially now that it offers travel protection benefits.

This review examines the refreshed Citi Strata Premier℠ Card's offerings, whether it's a good fit for you, and why it might deserve a spot in your wallet.

Citi Strata Premier℠ Card Overview

As mentioned above, the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card isn't entirely new. Rather, it has replaced the former Citi Premier, which carried the same $95 annual fee and offered many of the same benefits.

This move from Citi is exciting not just because the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card is essentially a new card. But because Citi hasn't been on the forefront of travel credit cards for years. Introducing a card with new travel benefits is a positive step toward rejoining the competition.

The former Citi Premier sat at the top of our guide to the best Citi credit cards for its versatility, and the revamped Citi Strata Premier℠ Card continues to merit this accolade by earning 3x per dollar at supermarkets, restaurants, gas stations, air travel, and hotels.

The revamped Citi Strata Premier℠ Card includes a new bonus category for elevated rewards that will be popular with eco-friendly drivers: EV charging. Cardholders can also now earn 10 Citi ThankYou points per dollar spent on most purchases within the Citi travel portal (on the Citi Premier, this rate was a limited-time offer), and 1x on everything else. Finally, the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card also has a new suite of travel insurance benefits that the previous Citi Premier did not.

Citi Strata Premier℠ Card Rewards

The Citi Strata Premier card earns Citi ThankYou points , which is a flexible point currency. This means points can be redeemed in multiple ways, including statement credits, gift cards, travel and more.

However, the most important feature of Citi points is that they can be transferred to a variety of hotel, shopping, and airline transfer partners . This is by far the most valuable way to redeem your points, and thanks to Citi's robust lineup of partners, it's easy to find ways to use your points.

The Citi Strata Premier card makes it easy to earn Citi points with such a broad range of elevated earning categories, especially if you're using the Citi travel portal.

Welcome Bonus

New Citi Strata Premier℠ Card cardholders can earn 75,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first three months of account opening. According to our most recent points and miles valuations , the initial bonus points alone are worth around $1,200 in travel when you transfer points to Citi's airline and hotel partners.

The points from this bonus alone could be worth enough to book a round-trip flight to Europe, South America, or even the Middle East for just the cost of taxes and fees.

Note that, in order to be eligible for the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card welcome offer, you must not have received a bonus for either the former Citi Premier or the new Citi Strata Premier℠ Card within the last 48 months.

How to Earn Points With the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card

The Citi Strata Premier℠ Card covers everyday spending more thoroughly than any other consumer credit card available right now. Cardholders earn:

  • 10x points per $1 spent on CitiTravel.com hotel, car rentals and attractions bookings
  • 3x points on air travel and hotels (including travel agencies)
  • 3x points at gas stations (excluding gas purchases at warehouse clubs, discount stores, department stores, and convenience stores)
  • 3x points at restaurants (including cafes, bars, lounges, and fast-food restaurants)
  • 3x points at supermarkets (excluding discount superstores and warehouse clubs)
  • 1 point per dollar on everything else

How to Use Points With the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card

You can earn and redeem Citi ThankYou rewards on everyday essentials whether you're staying close to home or taking the card on the road. You'll get excellent value either way.

Citi ThankYou points are highly valuable, especially when transferred to partners. For example, Citi points earned by the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card transfer to Choice Privileges at a 1:2 ratio. This means that one Citi point becomes two Choice points and can unlock incredible value for redemptions, especially at Choice's all-inclusive properties.

Other options for redeeming Citi points include gift cards, cash back, shopping with your points, and travel booked via the Citi travel portal.

If you really want to boost your Citi ThankYou Rewards earning, consider opening the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card plus the other two cards in the Citi Trifecta — the Citi® Double Cash Card and Citi Custom Cash℠ Card . With this credit card combination, you're guaranteed to earn 2x to 5x rewards for every single purchase for maximum value.

Transfer Citi ThankYou Points to Airline and Hotel Partners

When you have the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card (or the Citi Prestige® Card , which isn't available to new applicants), you can transfer your Citi ThankYou points to over a dozen travel loyalty program partners — mostly at a 1:1 ratio — to book award travel.

The value you'll get per point depends on the partner you choose and how you use the miles — typically, redeeming for expensive, international premium-cabin award flights will get you a higher value than domestic economy seats.

If you collect Sears Shop Your Way points, they're another transfer option at a rate of 1 Citi ThankYou point to 10 Sears points. Note that if you only have a no-annual-fee Citi ThankYou credit card, like the Citi Rewards+® Card , the only transfer partners available to you are JetBlue, Wyndham, and Choice, and the transfer ratios are slightly lower.

Redeem Citi ThankYou points for travel, gift cards, merchandise, and more

You can redeem Citi ThankYou points for gift cards, statement credits, or cash back at a rate of 1 cent each, making the bonus of 75,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 in the first three months of account opening worth $750 in rewards. You can also use points at the same value to make a charitable donation or book travel through the Citi ThankYou travel portal .

It's also possible to pay with points at Amazon , Best Buy, and other retailers, but you'll get a lower value when you redeem this way — as little as 0.5 cents per point.

Citi Strata Premier℠ Card Benefits and Features

Aside from earning points on your purchases, the new Citi Strata Premier℠ Card offers two key benefits: A $100 annual hotel credit, and travel insurance.

$100 Annual Hotel Benefit

Cardholders who book a hotel stay of at least $500 through Citi Travel before taxes and fees will receive a $100 statement credit once a year. Cardholders can earn the discount whether they pay for the hotel stay with their Citi Strata Premier℠ Card, Citi ThankYou points, or a combination of both.

Travel Insurance

The Citi Strata Premier Card offers four major types of travel insurance :

  • Rental car insurance : Primary coverage outside your country of residence, without any country exclusions.
  • Trip cancellation/interruption insurance : Receive a maximum of $5,000 per trip and $10,000 during a consecutive 12-month period.
  • Lost or damaged luggage : Reimbursement for a maximum of $3,000 ($2,000 for New York) per trip and two claims during a consecutive  12-month period.
  • Trip delay insurance : Beginning at six hours of delay, with a maximum payment of $500 per trip and two claims during a consecutive 12-month period.

To be eligible for this travel insurance benefit, you must pay for your trip using your Citi Strata Premier℠ Card.

No Foreign Transaction Fees

The Citi Strata Premier℠ Card does not charge foreign transaction fees.

Purchase Protection

Additionally, the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card offers purchase protection if an item is damaged or stolen within 90 days from the date you bought it. You can receive up to $10,000 in coverage per incident (with a maximum of $50,000 in coverage per year).

Extended Warranty

The card also offers extended warranty protection — you'll get 24 additional months on manufacturers' warranties of five years or less for eligible items you bought with the card.

Citi Entertainment

As a cardholder, you can access the Citi Entertainment program, which offers presale tickets , preferred tickets, VIP packages, and more. When you check out at Ticketmaster or Live Nation, you'll need to provide the first six digits of your card number as the passcode to take advantage of Citi's ticket benefits.

World Elite Mastercard Benefits

While all World Elite Mastercard credit cards are eligible for certain benefits, each credit card issuer can choose which ones they want to add to the card. You won't find certain World Elite Mastercard benefits like cell phone insurance on the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card, but you'll still get things like rental car perks and Lyft credits.

Citi Strata Premier℠ Card Fees and Other Costs

The Citi Strata Premier℠ Card comes with a 21.24% - 29.24% variable APR, so this isn't a good card option if you plan to carry a balance. If you plan to make a large expense you want to pay for over time, you should check out the best zero-interest credit cards first.

This card comes with a $95 annual fee, but you won't pay any foreign transaction fees .

As with most cards, balance transfers, late or returned payments, and cash advances are also subject to fees.

Compare the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card

With so many different travel credit cards from which to choose, how does the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card stack up?

As you evaluate the newly revamped Citi Strata Premier℠ Card, consider travel credit cards from other issuers that offer similar flexibility and earning opportunities. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card has a similarly strong bonus and options for earning and redeeming for travel, with amazing travel insurance benefits built into the card.

If you don't want to track bonus categories, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card offers a solid flat-rate return of 2 miles per dollar every time you swipe your card.

The following breakdown gives more insight into each card's merits and detractors.

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card vs. Citi Strata Premier℠ Card

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is a similar mid-tier travel credit card that earns Capital One miles you can transfer to airline and hotel partners. This card is an excellent option for those who spend a lot at Amazon and Walmart, neither of which earn bonus points through the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card.

Beyond those categories, however, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card's reward categories aren't quite as broad: You'll earn 5 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through the Capital One Travel Portal and 2 miles per dollar on everything else.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has a comparable $95 annual fee ( rates and fees ).

If the lion's share of your spending falls within the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card's 3x categories, you're likely better off sticking with it as your daily driver.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card vs. Citi Strata Premier℠ Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is Business Insider's choice for the best travel credit card available. The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card comes with some of the best credit card travel insurance available. You'll get things like trip delay insurance, baggage delay insurance, primary rental car insurance, and more.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card also earns flexible Chase Ultimate Rewards ® points you can transfer to multiple travel partners, and charges a $95 annual fee.

But while the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers stronger travel insurance protections, it falls behind theCiti Strata Premier℠ Card when it comes to earning rewards. The new Citi Strata Premier℠ Card offers up to 10x on travel portal purchases and earns extra rewards on gas stations and EV chargers.

Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card vs. Citi Strata Premier℠ Card

The Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card is another contender, with the ability to earn 5x points per $1 spent on hotels and 4x points per $1 spent on airfare. This makes it a compelling option for those who travel often. Unfortunately, its limited selection of transfer partners restricts the usefulness of the points it earns.

American Express® Gold Card vs. Citi Strata Premier℠ Card

The American Express® Gold Card earns more points per dollar than the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card on both dining and supermarket purchases.

This may make the American Express® Gold Card a better option for those who spend most of their money on dining, especially since the card earns valuable Amex points. That being said, you'll need to be willing to pay the $325 annual fee, which is more than three times what the Citi Strata Premier charges.

Citi Strata Premier Card Frequently Asked Questions

The Citi Strata Premier℠ Card is worth it if you spend a lot of money across the card's bonus categories such as groceries, gas, and dining, and if you value Citi's airline and hotel transfer partners. This card is one of the best point-earners on the market.

The Citi Strata Premier℠ Card isn't difficult to get if you have a good credit score (defined as a FICO score of at least 670), you have a chance at being considered for the card (though we recommend not applying unless your credit score is at least 700). Just note that if you've opened or closed a ThankYou points-earning card in the last 24 months, you won't be able to earn the bonus on this card.

While many customers keep the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card year after year because they get value out of the annual fee, some folks may decide the perks and benefits aren't worth the yearly cost. Instead of canceling the card outright, you can request to product change to a no-annual-fee card, such as the Citi Rewards+® Card.

The credit limit on your card will depend on several factors, including your credit score, payment history, existing credit, and whether or not you already have open Citi cards. Data points for the predecessor Citi Premier show credit limits up to $20,000, although this ceiling is determined by individual creditworthiness.

We tend to recommend the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card over the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card because of its quality travel insurance .

Yes, the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card is a World Elite Mastercard. This means you'll get benefits with companies such as Lyft and Shoprunner.

Cardholder Insights

The Citi Strata Premier℠ Card is a solid option that builds on the already well-liked Citi Premier card. With better benefits and no devaluation in sight, many cardholders believe that the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card will be even more popular than its predecessor.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card

Our credit card experts reviewed the Citi Strata Premier℠ Card against other popular travel rewards cards by evaluating several factors, including:

  • Fees — What fees do these cards charge? Do they cost less than $100 a year, or do they exceed $500?
  • Rewards — Are the cards offering good returns on spending? Who can take advantage of these bonus categories?
  • Credits — Do the cards offer any kind of statement credits?
  • Travel benefits — What other benefits do the cards offer? Is there travel insurance? How about airport lounge access or free checked luggage?
