Itinerary to Visit the South of India in 15 Days

So, let’s dive right into it!

You will find a day-by-day itinerary including the highlights of each place in the first part of this post. I’ve also included a map and other useful information (how to get around, the best time to visit, etc.) in the second part.

Day 1: Chennai

Chennai, the perfect place so start a South India itinerary

Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu, and as it has an international airport, it’s the perfect introduction to this culture-rich state.

There are many things to do in Chennai , but some of the most popular ones are going temple hopping , spending time at the city’s beaches and seeing the colonial architecture .

🛕 Highlights of Chennai

  • San Thome Cathedral Basilica: This beautiful church was built by the Portuguese in 1523. It’s one of the three churches in the world that have been built on the tombs of one of the apostles (this one was built on Thomas the Apostle’s tomb).
  • Kapaleeshwarar Temple: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this Hindu temple was built in the 7th century and later extended. It boasts some impressive architecture with many colourful details (that’s my favourite thing about Hindu temples).
  • Ripon Building: The beautiful Ripon Building was built in Indo-Saracenic architecture in 1913, and it’s the official seat of the Chennai Corporation. It’s good to know that you can’t visit this building on the inside, but it’s most famous for its chiming clock, which is wound every day.
  • Elliot’s Beach or Marina Beach: If you feel like relaxing, then heading to one of Chennai’s beaches is the perfect thing to do. While Marina Beach is the city’s most popular beach, Elliot’s Beach is a more quiet alternative.

Where to stay in Chennai: The Raintree

🚍 Mahabalipuram , the next destination on this South India itinerary, is just 1 hour from Chennai, so you can either head here on day 1 or day 2 of this itinerary.

Day 2: Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram in India

Mahabalipuram was one of my favourite places to visit in the South of India! This place is home to a group of royal monuments dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries. You will find plenty of beautifully carved temples and rock-cut caves here.

There are three different sites to see in Mahabalipuram but make sure to start your visit at the famous Shore Temple as this is where you can buy entry tickets.

A unique sight at Mahabalipuram is Krishna’s Butterball (as pictured above). According to the story, they tried moving this gigantic boulder numerous times for safety reasons, but it didn’t work.

Where to stay in Mahabalipuram: Bodhiwoods Resorts

🚍 The next stop on this itinerary is Pondichery (Puducherry), which is a 2-hour drive from Mahabalipuram. You can head here on day 2 or day 3 .

Day 3, 4 & 5: Pondicherry and Auroville

Villa Krish in the French Quarter in Pondicherry, India

The charming town of Pondicherry is famous for its mustard-yellow colonial buildings, beautiful beaches and cosy restaurants.

From the 16th century onward, this city was ruled by Dutch, British and French colonists. Pondicherry was repeatedly fought over during the Anglo-French Wars. In 1815, however, when the British gained control over India, they allowed France to keep their settlements in this city.

Some of the best things to do in Pondicherry are to explore the city’s different quarters, head to the beach and visit the nearby township of Auroville .

🛕 Highlights of Pondicherry

  • French Quarter: Pondicherry’s French Quarter is also called “White Town” and it’s here that you will find the mustard-yellow colonial buildings Pondicherry is so famous for.
  • Tamil Quarter: This quarter is often called “Black Town”, and it’s located on the West side of the French Quarter, across the canal. You will find three parts here – the Hindu, the Muslim and the Christian part. This area is completely different from the French Quarter and it’s nice to soak up the atmosphere in this part of the city too.
  • Beaches: If you want to relax a little, it’s good to know that the French Quarter of Pondicherry is located right at the beach. This is the perfect place for a stroll on the beach promenade or to swim in the sea.
  • Auroville: This experimental township was founded in 1968 by Mira Alfassa, who is also called “The Mother”. It was based on the vision of the Indian philosopher Sri Aurobindo and its purpose is to realise human unity. I would suggest reading my post about Auroville if you want to know more about the place, though, as I will keep it short in this one.

Where to stay in Pondicherry: Executive Inn

🚍 On day 5 , it’s time to head to Thanjavur , which is about 5 hours from Pondicherry.

Day 6: Thanjavur

Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavur in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu

With over a hundred Hindu temples, the small city of Thanjavur is often called “the temple city of India”, and you will indeed find a temple on every street corner here.

This city is also home to one of the most important UNESCO World Heritage sites in India, the famous Brihadisvara Temple , which is also called the “big temple”. But more about that below!

🛕 Highlights of Thanjavur:

  • Brihadisvara Temple: This is Thanjavur’s most famous tourist attraction and it’s easy to understand why. The magnificent Brihadisvara Temple was built in the 11th century by Chola emperor Rajaraja I and it’s one of the three Great Living Chola Temples . Its granite tower is one of the tallest in India.
  • Maratha Palace : This palace was built at the demand of the Thanjavur Nayak kings in the 15th century. It’s not as spectacular as the Brihadisvara Temple but it is worth visiting if you have more time in Thanjavur. You will find a beautiful Durbar Hall here among other things.

Another thing I loved doing in Thanjavur was simply wandering around the streets . There’s an incredible amount of Hindu temples here, more than in any other city I’ve been to in India (or any other country actually).

Where to stay in Thanjavur: Hotel Victoriyah

Day 7 & 8: Madurai

Temples are famous about India

🚍 The next destination on this itinerary for South India is Madurai , which is about 4 hours from Thanjavur. If you head here in the morning of day 7, you will still have some time left to explore Madurai (or rest) in the afternoon.

Madurai is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu and this is one of the best cultural destinations in India . Among other things, you will find one of the most famous Indian landmarks in this city – the Meenakshi Temple .

One of the things I love the most about Madurai is how friendly and welcoming the people are in this city. They don’t (or hardly) speak English, but they still manage to welcome you with open arms.

🛕 Highlights of Madurai

  • Meenakshi Temple : This is one of India’s oldest and most important Hindu temples. It’s estimated that the first temple that stood on these grounds was built in the 1st century. The temple that you can see today, however, was rebuilt in the 16th century after the previous one was destroyed by Muslim invaders. The Meenakshi Temple is a very impressive structure with enormous gopurams (towers) containing stunning details.
  • Saint Mary’s Cathedral: Saint Mary’s Cathedral is a beautiful, gothic-style church that was initially built in 1841 but rebuilt in 1916. It’s also called The Church of Our Lady of Dolours, and it’s one of Tamil Nadu’s oldest churches.
  • Thirumalai Nayak Palace : Built by Tirumala Nayak in the 17th century, this palace was considered one of the wonders of the South during its heyday. Today, only the main palace is left, which is just a quarter of the original complex. It makes you wonder how huge the place must have been during the olden days.
  • Banana Market: Madurai’s banana market is another place I loved walking through. The merchants here sell over 16 varieties of bananas (I didn’t even know there were so many), including red ones (which I also didn’t know existed)!
  • Gandhi Memorial Museum: The Gandhi Memorial Museum is one of the seven Gandhi museums in India. This is the perfect place to head to if you would like to learn more about India’s most famous freedom fighter.

Where to stay in Madurai: Avenue 11 Premium Stays

Day 9, 10 & 11: Munnar

Tea plantations in Munar in Kerala, South India

🚍 On day 9, it’s time to head to Munnar, which is the tea capital of Kerala . Munnar is a 4 to 5-hour drive from Madurai and this hill town is famous for its lush green tea plantations and beautiful greenery.

Many locals flock to this hill station during the boiling-hot Indian Summer and it’s also one of India’s most popular honeymoon destinations.

But apart from spending your honeymoon here, Munnar is also the perfect place to relax and enjoy nature for a while.

🛕 Highlights of Munnar

  • Tea plantations and tea factories: One of the most popular things to do in Munnar is to pay a visit to one of its many tea factories and tea plantations. Here, you can learn more about how tea is harvested, see tea plantation workers at work and taste some fine tea.
  • Echo Point & Top Station: Echo Point (a lake where you can make echoing sounds) is a nice stop on the way to Top Station, the highest point in Munnar. The latter is a 40 km (24 mi) drive from Munnar and you will be rewarded with magnificent views if you head here!
  • Eravikulam National Park : Apart from its beautiful landscapes, this national park is also famous for being the natural habitat of the Nilgiri Tahr, an endangered mountain goat. It’s also home to the Lakkom Waterfalls, which is easily accessible.

I have to admit that the downside of Munnar is that foreigners are not allowed to rent scooters here anymore, which makes it pretty difficult to visit things by yourself. However, there are plenty of tours or auto-rickshaws that can bring you around.

Where to stay in Munnar: Elephant Passage

Day 12, 13 & 14: Backwaters of Alleppey

Backwaters of Alleppey in Kerala

The backwaters of Alleppey are full of lush greenery, beautiful palm trees and sparkling rivers. This place is on many traveller’s Indian travel bucket lists . As you cruise these waters, you will witness the everyday life of the farmers and fishermen along the canals.

Alleppey is also the perfect destination to go canoeing, drink coconut water and simply relax. It’s a peaceful destination that’s perfect for nature lovers.

If you have the budget, you can also rent your own private houseboat for the night. This will allow you to cruise the backwaters by yourself and spend the night there too. I didn’t do this myself, as it’s quite expensive and I was backpacking in India alone .

Where to stay in Alleppey: Malayalam Lake Resort

🚍 Head to Fort Kochi on day 14. This city is a 1.5-hour drive from Alleppey.

Day 15: Fort Kochi

Fort Kochi, South India

On the last day of this South India itinerary, it’s time to explore Fort Kochi (or Cochin). This was the first European township in India .

Fort Kochi is an area in the city of Kochi and, before India’s independence, it was first controlled by the Portuguese, then the Dutch and eventually the English.

This town is steeped in history and you will find plenty of colonial buildings, interesting museums and charming alleys here.

🛕 Highlights of Fort Kochi

  • Chinese fishing nets: The Chinese fishing nets (or Cheena vala) are one of Fort Kochi’s most famous tourist attractions. It’s said that Chinese explorer Zhang He introduced these nets to Kochi in the 14th or 15th century. Because of this, the nets stand as a symbol for the exchange of ideas that happened in the Indian subcontinent at that time.
  • St. Francis Church: This church was built in 1503 and it was the first Portuguese church in India. It’s inside this church that Portuguese explorer Vasco Di Gama (who died in Kochi) was originally buried, but his remains were later moved to Lisbon , Portugal.
  • Vasco da Gama Square: Its little restaurants make the Vasco da Gama Square a great place to spend the evening. Make sure to look up when you’re there, as this square is covered with beautiful rain trees.
  • Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica : This magnificent, Roman Catholic church was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Don’t forget to visit it inside too while you’re there, as it’s very nice!
  • Dutch Palace: The Dutch Palace (or Mattancherry Palace) was actually built by the Portuguese as a gift to the Kingdom of Cochin. However, when the Dutch took over, they renovated the palace, which is why it’s nicknamed “the Dutch Palace”. If you’re a history buff, then you will love this place! It exhibits many paintings, furniture, weapons, palanquins, Dutch maps and more.

And that was it! This was the last day of this itinerary for the South of India. Kochi is a nice place to end your journey in the South of India and it has an international airport.

Where to stay in Fort Kochi: Rossitta Wood Castle

Map and Itinerary

Fort Kochi in Kerala, South India

Best Time to Visit the South of India

The best time to visit southern India is during the Winter season, from October to March . This is when the weather is at its best.

I was in Kerala and Tamil Nadu in April and May (the Summer months) and I’ve honestly never been so hot in my life. I seriously underestimated the humidity in this part of the country and would not recommend heading there at this time of the year.

June to September is the monsoon season and it can rain quite a bit at this time of the year. When I was in Kochi (in April), there were floods each time it rained and I found myself walking with water up to my knees more than once.

How to Get Around the South of India

You will find the best ways to get around below. This includes how to get from one city to another and how to get around in the cities.

How to get from one city to another

  • Bus: All of the places mentioned in this list can be reached by local bus. This is not the most comfortable way to travel but it’s absolutely doable if you’re on a budget!
  • Train: Not all of these destinations can be reached by train, but some can. You can take the train from Thanjavur to Madurai, for example.
  • Private car: The most comfortable (and fastest) way to get from one city to another is by taking a private car. This will be more expensive too, though.

I did everything by local bus and never booked anything in advance (which is necessary when you travel in the north of India). I just showed up at the bus station and asked around to find the right bus, and it worked fine.

How to get around cities

  • Auto-rickshaw: You will find these everywhere. I would recommend using the Ola app , though. It works just like Uber and will save you some money. Rickshaw drivers charge foreigners 10 times the local price, but if you use Ola, you will get a fair price immediately and won’t need to haggle.
  • Bus : There are plenty of local buses in the cities. This is the cheapest way to get around, but it requires a bit more planning than the rickshaw.
  • Private car: Another way to get around the cities is by private car, but this will be more expensive.

Banana market in Madurai, a nice stop on a South India itinerary

South India Itinerary: Final Thoughts

I hope that this itinerary will help you plan your trip to the beautiful South of India. I really loved exploring this part of the county. The South is less touristy than the Golden Triangle and Rajasthan in the North, and there are so many beautiful things to see here!

Of course, this part of the country has got more to offer, it’s HUGE, after all! However, this itinerary offers a nice mix of culture, history and nature, which is a varied introduction if you have 15 days to spend here.

Are you heading to the north of India too? Check out my Rajasthan itinerary next!

Our tour was almost entirely flawless from start to finish. We did not have to think of any details that often detract from enjoying the trip. It was the most organized yet flexible travel experiences I've had. Our driver Shubam, was a delight to be around. Tour company, guides, driver went above an beyond to make our trip enjoyable and memorable. Kerala is Beautiful and the food was amazing. I highly recommend this tour company and will be booking another trip with them in future.

South India Revealed Tour

South India Revealed

I give the tour guide an excellent review but the tour itself was only okay. We spent two days in places where we should have spent one day. Madurai, Thekkady, and Mysore were those places. We should have spent full two days and two nights in Hampi because there is so much to do. Some of the hotels were pretty bad and didn't have redeeming qualities. The hotel in Varkala was dirty but it was close to the beach. The one in Hampi was dirty but had the cool seating area and hammock things, so that was nice. The hotel in Mysore was disgusting, filthy, and had zero redeeming qualities. Overall, I thought the pacing was a bit off, so realistically I wouldn't recommend the tour to my best friends. I'd also like to say that I don't think my expectations were too high. I'm a seasoned backpacker and traveler in both the developed and undeveloped world, and I live in Pakistan. So it's not like this was my first time visiting a developing country.

Kerala: Beaches & Backwaters Tour

Kerala: Beaches & Backwaters

What I was looking for: - do more cultural activities than when travelling solo (I usually do none) - stay with a chill group of people for a week - see Kerala that I heard so much about My experience: - this tour has limited activities. It’s in the itinerary. I booked the only one that matches my dates without checking too much… - the group was pretty cool. The restaurants / bars we were recommended were bad though. - I got to see Kerala. The walk through the rice fields was amazing Overall, I’d say go for it if you’re not comfortable travelling on your own. The 2 days in the backwaters were worth going on a tour. The beach is better done solo travelling / resort / hostel.

Quick Cochin Munnar Thekkady Alleppy Kovalam 8 Days Tour

When I Visit a 8 day tour of the Cochin and Alleppey regions of Kerala with Quick Cochin Munnar Thekkady Alleppy Kovalam. It was an amazing experience! The tour was well-organized and the drivers were very friendly and helpful. The sights we saw during our journey were beautiful, and I was really impressed by the variety of wildlife we encountered. The best part of the tour, though, was the food. I must say that I was blown away by the deliciousness of all the meals we ate. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a luxurious and enjoyable trip. The only downside is that I wish it could have been longer!

Exotic Kerala Tour (Coconut Holiday Of India) Tour

Exotic Kerala Tour (Coconut Holiday Of India)

Kerala is beautiful, very scenic and the people are generally very friendly. Other than in Cochin we really didn’t have a guide, just a driver. Our driver changed during the tour, in all we had three drivers. None of the drivers were very informative about what we were doing or gave us information about the sights. The itinerary varied considerably from the one we were given prior to the trip, although most of the major sites were visited, but not necessarily on the day specified. The highlight of the trip was the house boat on the backwaters. This was fabulous as was the food provided. Most of the other hotels were dated and could not be recommended.

only two things I would change on this trip, is the hotel in Kovalam unless you like washing out of a bucket and Periyar park complete waste of money and time went on boat seen one bird and one bore I didn't expect to see a tiger but there should have been other wildlife That's the negative now the rest driver very good places very nice other hotel's excellent Would definitely recommend this trip hopefully the company will change the hotel in Kovalam And adjust the trip to Periyar

Incredible South India

Overall, we were very pleased with this tour. It provided a fine introduction to south India , showing us a wide vareity of landscapes and historical sites. The driver, Loukesh, was excellent. Throughout there was a problem with the poor quality of spoken English, in particular on the part of the local tourist guides. Most of the hotels were adequate but in two cases we found them uinsatisfactory. (Details can be provided.)

Pandyan dynasty was the richest empire popular for their diplomacy and contacts. They expanded their Empire to Telegu country, Kalinga and conquered Sri Lanka as well. Chola dynasty ruled from 9th century to the beginning of 13th century.

The Chera dynasty also had an important mark and presence in the region. The region also faced prominent British rule. The East India Company had direct control over Madras Presidency. Hampi and Mahabalipuram offer great destinations for exploring architectural beauties. Pondicherry is a must visit for witnessing the French architecture.

South India in one week: The ultimate guide

South India one week guide

There’s no doubt about it – India is a huge, astonishingly diverse country. And for that reason, travelers often stick to either the north or south, which is a good idea if you’re on a tight schedule and want to get a true sense of a place.

In India , this won’t take long – within a week you can immerse yourself in this dizzying culture; it’s impossible to escape the succulent smells of curries, the vibrant colours of spices and saris, the chaotic busyness of the streets, and the unique sights that will unfold daily in front of your eyes.

Because India can be a little confronting, many first-time visitors stick to exploring the well-established tourism infrastructure of Rajasthan . But although it’s second time visitors that often choose to head to South India, this welcoming part of the country is great for everyone, whether you’re a foodie, history buff, beach lover, or newbie traveller.

South India one week guide

Basilica of Bom Jesus, Goa

It’s true, you could easily spend a lifetime exploring and learning about India and not experience everything it has to offer. A lifetime is not an option for most of us with a job, so a week is a good starting length, and if you travel smartly you will be able to do South India justice in just seven days. Here’s how.

Though technically located in West India, Goa is a great place to start any trip. The coastal gem has been a traveler highlight for decades.

Make your way to Palolem and set up shop in a comfortable bungalow near the beach. From here, you can discover the laid-back beaches, dive right into South India cuisine, explore quaint fishing villages, and learn about Goa’s Portuguese past.

The laid-back vibe here makes it pretty easy to pass the time by laying on the beach and doing nothing. While that’s totally fine – and it may be exactly what you want to do after arriving – we suggest moving around and experiencing as much as possible.

The waters off of Palolem are one of the safest areas to swim in all of Goa. Rent a paddle or surfboard and take to the waves, or if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, hop in a kayak and explore the small islands a few minutes from the coast.

Wake up to the sounds of the waves gently combing the shoreline. When you’re ready to go, hail down a rickshaw and make your way to nearby Agonda beach, which is one of the most beautiful beaches in a Goa, and start your morning off with one of the most delicious breakfasts of your life at Little Plantain Leaf Restaurant.

After breakfast, carry on to the laid-back coastal village of Anjuna. Every Wednesday, Anjuna hosts a sprawling flee market, filled with handicrafts, food, jewelry, and much more. It’s the perfect place to practice your bargaining skills. If you’re visiting on Saturday, the energetic, open-air night market in Arpora – one mile away – is not to be missed.

The best way to explore the Anjuna and the surrounding area is by scooter. With the sun shining down and the wind in your hair, zoom around and explore the outskirts of town and nearby beaches, where you’ll find your own little slice of sandy paradise. Calangute Beach is the largest beach in Goa and is filled with both locals and tourists. Dotted with shops, restaurants, and clubs, it’s well worth a trip.

A little farther on the moped, but a sight that should not be missed, is the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. Completed in 1605, the church is a special landmark for Catholics and is one of the best examples of baroque architecture in India.

If you’re really feeling adventurous, head inland to the spectacular Dudhsagar Falls – translating to Sea of Milk – the fourth tallest waterfall in India.

Day 3: Kochi

Much farther south in the state of Kerala is Fort Cochin – often known as Old Kochi – whose shores have been luring in traders and explorers for 600 years. There remains a unique and fascinating mix of culture in Kochi, where you can see Chinese fishing nets sitting along the coast, ancient mosques and synagogues, and Portuguese architecture.

Fort Cochin is a historical town in the city of Kochi, and while the area isn’t very large, it makes for great exploring, where you can walk down narrow alleyways and tuck into hole-in-the-wall eateries. One of the best breakfasts I had in India, consisting of a delicate potato sabji and roti, was in Kochi, through a small entrance way.

South India one week guide

Fishing nets in Kochi

Kochi is home to the Keralan art forms of Kathakali and Kalaripayattu, and is one of the best places to see live performances. Kathakali is a form of classical Indian dance referred to as a “story play” where performers wear elaborate makeup, colorfully-adorned costumes, and unique masks. Kathakali themes usually focus on folk mythologies, religious legends, and spiritual ideas.

Don’t skip out on visiting the Kerala Folklore Museum, which houses over 4000 artifacts. These include wood and bronze sculptures, ancient terracotta, jewelry, paintings, musical instruments, tribal and folk art, and masks from the past 1000 years.

Day 4: Alleppey

Alappuzha, commonly known as Alleppey, is most famous for its enchanting backwaters, but there’s much more to see an do here than hang out on the waters.

If you can handle the heat, take a stroll along the sprawling Alleppey Beach and wander by the 150-year-old pier that stretches out into the ocean. The beach fills to the brim with locals during the evening when the weather is cooler, as everyone wants to watch as the sun sets over the Indian ocean – something you should try to see every night.

South India one week guide

Intrepid travellers exploring the backwaters

Many Hindu temples here are brightly adorned with intricately-carved mythological creatures, making the temples a feast for your eyes. One of the oldest temples in Kerala, the Sree Subramanya Swami Temple, is a beautiful example of Hindu temple architecture. Even better: tourists are allowed to enter it (which is sometimes not permitted).

If you’ve been following your nose all afternoon and need to satisfy your hunger, head to Thaff restaurant and devour a Keralan thali, so you get a good mix of different flavors. If you visit Alleppey in August, try to catch the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, where teams of locals race on giant traditional snake boats on the Punnamada Lake.

Day 5: Alleppey

After a day spent exploring Alleppey’s attractions on land, it’s time to get on to the water to explore the vast network of waterways called the Keralan backwaters, which is the attraction that brings most visitors to the region.

You can choose from a simple afternoon cruise or up to a week’s stay, but I suggest one full day and night to fully experience the beauty of the backwaters. It’s better to invest in a top-rated boat, where you can relax while a chef cooks your food and the captain steers the boat, as you navigate through serene lakes, canals, and lagoons on your own floating paradise.

Day 6: Varkala

Varkala has become one of Kerala’s most popular tourist destinations in recent years, partly due to its beautiful setting along the top of a 15-meter-high cliff, which is lined with neat shops and tasty restaurants. It’s a feel-good town, where you can heal and rejuvenate your body in one of the Ayurveda, yoga, or reiki centers. Ayushi Ayurvedic Retreat is one of the highest-regaled treatment centres in the area, which was have you feeling top-notch in no time.

On top of being a backpacker hangout, a place for beach lovers, and a town of healing centres, Varkala is a temple town at its core. Hindus consider Papanasam Beach and the water to be holy and purifying, and they visit here to make offerings for loved ones who have passed. The most famous temple in town is Janardhana Swami Temple. The temple dates back to the 12th century, but was originally built 2000 years ago, and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

South India one week guide

Stunning Varkala

A walk along Varkala cliff is wonderful any time of day, but it’s best to be there during the evening. Grab a table on the upper deck at Café del Mar and order a richly-spiced chana masala with some naan as you watch the sunset.

VISIT VARKALA ON INTREPID’S 16-DAY SOUTH INDIA REVEALED TOUR

Day 7: Varkala

As you can see, South India is all about sand, sea, scooters, spices, and creating special memories. To kickstart your last day, grab a freshly-brewed coffee from Coffee Temple and consider sticking around for some breakfast, either Western or Indian.

Though most restaurants are situated along the cliff, there are cheaper options in the town of Varkala (which is a couple of miles away). You have to go to Hotel Suprabhatham and try the masala dosa, a true South Indian specialty. If you’ve got the room, order the idly and sambar, too.

South India one week guide

Another must-try: thali

Varkala is a great place to rent scooters from. I rented one for about $5 for the whole day, and cruised to the nearby cities of Kovalam and Kollam, stopping at secluded beaches along the way, and traveling on narrow coastal roads through rural villages. It’s a sense of freedom that’s pretty difficult to replicate.

Is it a crime to start and end your trip near the beach? Definitely not. Head down the giant red cliffs lining Varkala’s coast and talk a relaxing walk along the expansive Papanasam Beach before taking one last dip in the warm waters of the Indian ocean.

Testimonials

From our guests.

Lucy Cain

My Husband & I and our 8 year old son visited India for the first time. We reached out to a dozen travel companies but were most impressed how Indian Expeditions interacted with us.  We got immediate email response to our questions giving clear advice and information about the options available to us and were also offered a free tour place for our son. We chose the Essential South India journey.

The tour was absolutely fabulous and we got to see and experience so many things we definitely couldn’t have by ourselves. The itinerary itself is not rushed, and instead of trying to cram everything in, focuses on just the right things. We have a very hard time trying to pick out which day was the best – every day was just fantastic. Travel time is well thought off, the resorts we stayed in excellent, the food just incredible.

Chandan is a great guide and along with all his excellent historical knowledge about the places we visited gave us a wonderful insight into life in India.

I would highly recommend this tour.

Faith Augustus

An INCREDIBLY well organised trip, with an EXCEPTIONAL guide. Me and my two teenaged sons loved every minute of our adventure. And it was an adventure for sure – watching tigers in the wild, cooking with locals, helping out in a farm – just INCREDIBLE. My sons have learnt SO much from the trip and now want to pursue careers in history – that was how well the complex, ancient history of the region was bought alive to all of us on the Essential South India tour. We have been on many guided trips, but never enjoyed any as much as we did this one. Thank you Chandan and Indian Expeditions. You are all so wonderful. We will be back!

Indian Expeditions Comprehensive South India is most certainly an excellent way to travel and enjoy this wonderful part of India. It encompasses both the history and iconic religious sites to fantastic landscapes and getaways as well as allowing you to get close to the very friendly and interesting people who live there. You will be sure to both learn much of the fascinating country and be able to immerse yourself both in the vast history, present and the wonderfully diverse countryside and coastlines. A very well organised trip with an excellent group of travel companions.

John Trevor

An incredible trip, much better than we expected and without a doubt we have the best guide of all the trips we have ever been on – Seetharam.  The South India trip really has a brilliant mixture of history, culture, nature, beach and backwaters. I can’t believe we did and saw so much in this magical 14 days. The trip was extremely well organised from start to finish and the group we travelled with were all like minded and fun. We will keep coming back to do more trips with Indian Expeditions and recommend them to all my friends who’d like to visit India.

John Trevor

Brad Cooper

We had a fantastic time with Indian Expeditions and Chandan as our tour leader on a 14 day tour of the region. Chandan’s knowledge of the area and expertise were invaluable. On top of that, he was laid back and easy to talk to, all the while accommodating our unique expectations and special requirements as well as others in group. He also leveraged his connections to secure the best possible experiences everywhere we visited. In contrast, we did use another company while we were in Northern India and they were not nearly as good. It seemed like their primary goal was to get us in front of the merchants that they probably get kickbacks from. Indian Expeditions was not like that at all. It was like having a group of local showing us around.

5 Recommended places to visit in South India

South India is filled with amazing destinations — some popular and touristy, some very off-the-beaten-path and local. If you are venturing into South India for the first time, we recommend the following 5 places to start off your journey.

1. Karnataka

Hampi is a must visit when on a trip to India

A beautiful collision between urban hip, exquisite ancient ruins, quaint villages, and emerald landscape, Karnataka is a hidden gem that many tourists overlook in favour of its popular neighbours but really should not. Home to a myriad of attractions, Karnataka is the place to be for explorers. Spot tigers in Bandipur National Park, take a step back in time at Hampi, marvel at the impressive royal palaces in Mysore and get inspired along the winding trails of spice and coffee plantations in Coorg. This is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in South India.

2. Tamil Nadu

Madurai in India

Whether you are in need of a relaxing holiday or a mystical one, Tamil Nadu is the go-to-destination in South India. Featuring stunning coastlines, lush hill stations, cultural abundance and some of the finest stonework, there is no lack of activities to indulge in — from hikes to cultural exploration or water activities. Journey through the well-kept gardens, ancient temples and villages that make up the southern state and immerse yourself in the dance, language and poetry of its people.

3. Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Andaman Nicobar Islands are less known but beautiful destinations in Asia

Floating on the Bay of Bengal, around 966 km away from India’s mainland, is Andaman and its neighbour, Nicobar. The two are peaks of a mountain range that runs from Myanmar to Indonesia, which once stood tall and is now submerged in water. Known for its rare biodiversity and home to six indigenous tribes, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are famous for their distinct flavour and make a perfect Indian escape. Boasting serene blue waters, white sand beaches and emerald green jungles, the islands sets the desired milieu for a relaxing getaway.

4. Lakshadweep

A cluster of 36 white-sand-beached, palm-lined islands makes Lakshadweep a rewarding destination in South India. Situated on the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep flaunts unspoiled coral reefs and underwater lagoons that are a big attraction amongst scuba divers and snorkelers. If you are aching for beautiful waters, isolation, and an island experience like none other, the hidden gem of Lakshadweep is the place to be.

5. Kerala

Kochi is one of the must-visit places in Kerala

The narrow coastal strip of Kerala in South India is your escape from the boisterous madness of the rest of India. Boasting a network of glistening backwaters, a stretch of beaches lined with palm trees, and green hill stations covered with tea and spice plantations, Kerala is a different world in its own. Allow yourself to strip away from the bustling city life and dive deep into the villages of Kerala to experience a slower way of life. Top it all off with a boat ride through the shaded backwaters of Cochin, Karasagod, and Kollam.

7-day South India Itinerary

If a pre-designed tour to South India is not your cup of coffee, you can always create your own itinerary with places you want to visit and activities that scream at you the most. Here is an example of a customized itinerary to help you plan your own.

Day 1: Start at Chennai Start in Chennai, the capital of South India. Known for its diverse neighborhoods and urban villages, Chennai is the heart of South India’s artistic, religious and culinary communities. Walk through the museums and temples that give Chennai its beautiful history. Spend your morning at St. Thomas Church or Fort St. George and make your way to the Government Museum and Art Gallery. Spare your afternoon to exploring the hipster cafes, styling boutiques and end off at one of the many bars in the city. Spend the night at one the luxe hotels at the heart of the city,

Day 2: Explore Kanchiparum and Mahabalipurum

Mahabalipuram on South India Tour

Start early and take the short hour-and-a-half train trip to Kanchipuram, also known as the “Golden City of a Thousand Temples”. Enjoy the morning exploring the many temples that encompass the city, namely Kamakshi Amman, Kailashnath, Vaikuntha and Ekambareswarar. When the temples get overwhelming, try puttu , a rice dish layered with coconut and served with luscious spicy curry. In the afternoon visit the silk market and learn about the fabrics that make up saris and perhaps try wearing one too. Take one home for souvenir sake! Head back to Chennai to stay the night.

Day 3: Chennai to Madurai Board an early hour-long flight to Madurai, India’s version of Athens. One of the oldest cities in India, Madurai’s many attractions include the world famous Meenakshi Amman Temple. Marvel at the intricately carved, colourful structure in the morning and pay respects to the deity that is believed to reside there. Spend the rest of the day exploring the medieval remnants in the city. Be sure to check out the Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace and learn more about Gandhi at the local Gandhi Museum. Before calling it a night, visit the Meenakshi temple again in the evening to witness a larger-than-life Aarti ceremony — a special ritual that involves lighting oil lamps to illuminate the entire temple premise.

Day 4: Madurai to Periyar National Park

Periyar National Park in Kerala is a must-visit

Prepare for a 3-hour long road trip to Periyar National Park. An elephant and tiger reserve, Periyar National Park is popular amongst tourists. Spread over 777 square kilometres, the reserve is also home to wild boars, sambars, bison, and several species of birds. Spend most of the morning and afternoon journeying through its rolling hills to spot all the wildlife to your heart’s content. Then, in the evening, spend some time visiting the spice plantations around. Grab some cinnamon and cardamom to take home. If you’ve booked accommodation in a hotel inside the park, stay the night there. If not, there are plenty of nice spots outside the park as well for the night.

Day 5: Periyar to Kumarakom

Alleppey in Kerala Backwaters

Embark on a four-hour long train journey to Kumarakom. Located in the region of Kerala this vintage town is famed for its calm demeanour and quieter waters compared to its sister Alleppey. Made of a cluster of small islands on the Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom is also known for its 14-acre bird sanctuary. Spend the morning exploring the sanctuary of migratory birds such as the famous Siberian Stork, heron and local species such as the waterfowl. But the best part of a trip to Kumarakom is definitely a houseboat tour of its enchanting backwaters. Grab dinner at a local eatery before you retire for the night.

Day 6: Kumarakom to Cochin An hour and a half’s drive away from Kumarakom, Cochin is known for its diverse mix of heritage. A medieval melting pot, Cochin flaunts its influences from Chinese, Dutch, and Portuguese culture with Islamic undertones. Spend the morning immersed in the multi-cultural communities and local architecture. For lunch, indulge in local dishes where fresh seafood plays the main hero. Head down to the many beautiful beaches that surround the port city. Be sure to make a stop to Cherai Beach. Dip your feet into the shallow waters and clean sand, with rolling rocks and knolls that overlook the waves.

Day 7: End in Goa

Palolem beach in Goa

End your trip on a two-hour flight to Goa from Cochin, a place known for its uninterrupted golden beaches that stretch along the Arabian coastline. Find hidden coves, crabs, palm trees and markets along the many beaches of Goa . Unwind at Cavelossim beach to enjoy the end of the trip or take a scooter around Old Goa, soaking in the history of the region that once served as the capital of Portuguese India. Spend your afternoon eating away at the many stalls that line the main street, perusing through flea markets until your feet are done. End your night exploring an old school Goa party and the birthplace of psychedelic trance. Make sure you try the Goan fish curry, a local specialty made of your preferred seafood and coconut and red chilli sauce.

Good to know

  • While beef is sacred meat in India and not easily available, Kerala is one of two states that is licensed to serve beef. So, make sure to get your share when you’re there.
  • Only go swimming off the beaches from November to May. Times outside of those months can see currents rise up and it may become dangerous to dive in.
  • The best time to visit South India is during winter (December to February) when the weather is not scorching hot.
  • Pack a lot of breathable, cotton clothes, as South India is hot and humid even on its best days.
  • Take at least one item of local clothing with you, or buy something on arrival. Some temples in South India won’t allow you in if you are not wearing traditional clothes.

A trip to South India — from lush green hills to sandy coastlines, enchanting backwaters, architectural marvels and historic grandeurs — will be an unforgettable experience. Jump on one of our South India tour packages or create your own, unique South India itinerary; whatever you do, do not procrastinate on traveling to this amazing destination.

“We had an excellent holiday! All the hotels were of a very good standard, except the Fort Munnar hotel, where the staff were very helpful, but the accommodation and facilities were not as good as the other locations we stayed in. We especially liked the houseboat and our driver Avi was superb – we couldn’t have wished for a nicer, more accommodating and friendly chap! Many thanks once again, and I would thoroughly recommend you to others wishing to visit beautiful Kerala!”

Ms. R. Hutchison

Ms. S. Stote

“ Thank you so much for making my holiday so enjoyable. As always so well organised and thoughtful.”

Stuart Foster, Journalist

Indian Odyssey organised a highly enjoyable customised tour of Sri Lanka for me. I returned home after many highly positive experiences, with lots of great insights into the country’s wildlife, culture and heritage. The accommodation that was chosen for me proved outstanding: each hotel or resort had bags of character and proved a memorable place to stay. My chauffer-guide was a reliable, safe driver who was trustworthy and able to supply both a local’s perspective and some cracking personal insights that went way beyond details I found in guidebooks. I returned having enjoyed the journey, feeling it would have been nigh impossible to have done things better.

Mr. and Mrs. Colin Vibert

“ This was our 6 th visit to India. We have travelled before with companies specialising in the country, but they tended to get too big and the personal service was lost. Indian Odyssey gave us that personal service, and also came up with an itinerary that offered us one or two different locations from other agents – thats why we chose Indian Odyssey. The person who dealt with our enquiry is also familiar with the country which makes a big difference when you are discussing holiday options. ”

Mr. & Mrs. Arnold

“We very much enjoyed Sri Lanka and appreciated your efforts in putting together a good itinerary in what was a really a short time and close to the planned departure date”

MR & MRS. JENKINS

“Thank you very much for organising such a great holiday. The itinerary was brilliant and everything worked very well and there was always an agent to meet us on arrival at our next destinations. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and it has wetted our appetites to visit India again. We would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Indian Odyssey to any of our friends.”

MR & MRS. PAYNE

“Our holiday was one of the most vibrant, colourful and cultural experiences ever with delicious varied food.Udaipur was a delightful and restful city for our final destination with fabulous views of the lakes and away from the constant tooting of horns. We will return again and Sri Lanka also appeals as another vibrant and beautiful country to visit.

Travelling in India for a month? This article will explore travel routes through India in one month. The famous saying goes, ‘a life time is not enough to explore all of India’ , and rightly so. Therefore, we suggest that one month in India is the least amount of time you would want to spend here.

There is no single best route to travel across India, so we have provided 5 different routes. Each outline covers 4 weeks in India and includes an overview of the routes, the destinations, the highlights, and the modes of travel.

The suggested routes are moderate to fast-paced trips, that contain the drawbacks of the tours. They also have an approximate indicative budget for each route, going from backpackers to luxury travellers. You can compare different routes of travelling in India and see what you should be prepared to miss out on. The E-Visa and Visa On Arrival have made India a much simpler place to get to for travellers wanting to visit India.

travel routes through India – route 1: the classic north and south

Route 1: delhi – varanasi – agra – jaipur – jaisalmer – jodhpur – udaipur – mumbai – goa – hampi – kerala ( route on googlemaps ).

This travel route through India is one of the most popular month-long routes for travellers, especially with backpackers . This route has you starting in the historically rich capital of Delhi. Head east to visit Varanasi, one of the oldest continually inhabited cities known to civilization. Travel west to visit the Taj Mahal, and then loop around the desert state of Rajasthan.

While traveling in India, you’ll get to explore cities rich in culture and character in Rajasthan (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur). You can also take part in the Camel Safari & the Desert Camp in Jaisalmer. End the northern leg of your trip in Udaipur before taking a bus or flight to Mumbai. Travelling to the South is more relaxing, as you’ll be travelling along the same coast as Mumbai . Relax on the beaches in Goa. Explore the boulders and rice fields of the time-bound Hampi. Visit the beautiful state of Kerala known for its backwaters and its tea plantations.

Depending on when you are looking to travel, this travel route through India can be quite busy. This is one of the most frequented routes by travellers wanting to visit India. If you plan on picking it, we suggest you ensure all your transport and accommodation is booked well in advance .

Since all these places are popular among tourists, it’s likely you will bump into more than a few on this trip. While that isn’t always a bad thing, but if you’d like to avoid the crowds we’d suggest you travel a little early (mid July – September) .   While the North would have great weather, the South would be wet, but beautiful.

Backpacker! Boutique! or mix and match, we can help you plan a well thought and cost effective month across India.

Cost of a four week tour across North and South India?

In terms of backpacking – dorm beds, day and overnight trains and a possible flight – you could potentially do this tour for as little as 700 EUR. Together, we can cater to your budget when booking hotels and modes of transport. Travelling in India isn’t extremely expensive in regards to spending money, for example, the food is cheap yet healthy.

route 2: a glimpse of the mountains

Route 2: delhi – dharamshala – amritsar – rishikesh – delhi – jaipur – jaisalmer – jodhpur – udaipur – pushkar – agra – varanasi ( route on googlemaps ).

Being home to a billion people, a million Gods and plenty of wacky rituals, India is also home to the incredible Himalayas. This is the best possible travel route for people who have only a month in India and want to combine their trip to India with a trek in Nepal (Everest Base Camp/Annapoorna Mountain Pass).

You will begin your trip in Delhi, a city extremely central to some of the most prominent locations in North India. From here on, head north to Dharamshala (home to the Dalai Lama), followed by Amritsar (known for the beautiful Golden Temple) and Rishikesh (the Yoga capital of the world, also known for its adventure sports).

After Rishikesh, you come back to Delhi before heading southwest, this time in to Rajasthan. Start with the state’s three gems – Jaipur, Jodhpur & Udaipur – before visiting Pushkar and Agra and then taking an overnight train to Varanasi. Varanasi is quite intense, it’s one of the oldest civilizations in the world and also a great place to end your trip in India. If you’re up for an adventurous assault on the senses, you can take a bus from Varanasi into Nepal.

Luxury Getaways: Hotels in India

Like the first route, this is also extremely popular among travellers, so if you decide to take it, you might want to book your train tickets well in advance. It is a hectic route, so we would recommend it to active travellers.

Apart from that, this is a good route to cover three regions (the Himalayas, Rajasthan and Varanasi) in the month you have in India.

Here’s what our guests who travelled to India with us had to say.

Cost of a mountain tour in India

Again if you plan to backpack, take train and buses you can do the tour for as little as 600 EUR/ 700 USD per person. You would want to double your budget to travel comfortably.

route 3: Exploring the south

Route 3: mumbai – goa – hampi – mysore – bangalore – chennai/pondicherry – trichy/thanjavur – madurai –  munnar – thekkady – alleppey – kochi – varkala ( route on googlemaps ).

As a country, India has a myriad of facets and each region is often drastically different from the last. This travel route through India (the South) will be extremely gratifying – a full trip in itself.

Fly into Mumbai and head South to the fabulous beach state of Goa. Next, you can catch a bus or train to the evergreen Hampi and then spread out across Karnataka from royal Mysore to urban Bangalore before moving southeast to Chennai. Take a long break in Francophile Pondicherry or break it up with the southern spice of Trichy and Madurai. End the trip on the beach in Varkala or carry on to the stunning hill station of Munnar, and the backwaters in Alleppey.

For more detailed information about the best things to do in the South of India , read our blogs. Drawbacks South India is a beautiful region to explore, but it is slightly more expensive compared to the North. Flying into Mumbai and staying there can be quite expensive. There aren’t too many budget options in the South, even though there has been a rise in the number of hostels. It’s also sometimes convenient in the South to hire a car to get from one place to another, which racks up a higher bill than buses.

route 4: mix it up in south india

Route 4 :  mumbai – goa – hampi – mysore – wayanad – calicut – kochi – munnar – thekkady – alleppey – varkala ( route on googlemaps ).

This route, like the previous one, is all about exploring South India. However, while traveling in India on this route, you will not be travelling southeast. You’ll fly into Mumbai and head South to Goa, Hampi and Mysore before crossing into Kerala and spending the rest of your days exploring God’s own country.

This route is more relaxed and moves at a slower pace than the others, giving you time to soak in the beauty of the South without dropping dead from exhaustion. Getting from Mumbai to Goa to Hampi by bus is not tough, but if you throw in a few trains and maybe a car hire, it’ll be easier.

Drawbacks

Limited to the South alone, and includes all the same drawbacks as the previous route.

ROUTE 5: THE NORTH AND THE NORTH EAST

Route 5 :  delhi – bagdogra – gangtok – ravangla – pelling – namchi – darjeeling – kolkata – varanasi – khajuraho – orchha – agra – jaipur – jaisalmer – jodhpur – udaipur – pushkar – delhi ( route on googlemaps ).

The Himalayas, the Taj Mahal and the serene backwaters are a few things that people associate with India. And rightly so! However, India is also home to the divine but underrated Northeast, a virtual paradise nestled in the out-flung arm of the country. So when travelling in India remember this gem as well.

If you are looking to go off the beaten track, this is a great travel route for you to take . Travel through Bagdogra, Gangtok, Ravangla , Pelling, Namchi and Darjeeling, then make your way west to Kolkata; one of the oldest metros in the country. From there you can catch a train to Varanasi, then move through Khajuraho (known for it’s erotic temples), Orchha (the quintessential Indian town), Agra and Rajasthan, before heading back to Delhi.

Apart from being diverse, India is also simply large. You may have to take a few flights, Delhi – Badgogra, or Bagdogra – Kolkata to save time, since there is only a month and so much to see and do in it. Travelling in the Northeast could be slightly more expensive as the local transport, though very economical, is inconsistent with its timings. You may want to trade some of your other luxuries on the trip for a comfortable car ride.

Places like Khajuraho and Orchha are beautiful places to visit, but make sure you’ve made travel arrangements in advance. There is a dearth of options and not very great connectivity either.

Further, depending on the time of year you are planning to travel, the North and Northeast can get pretty cold, especially in the mountains. Hey. My name is Callum and I found your blog through Hippie in Heels. Me and my girlfriend are heading to India for a month is September so this article is super interesting and helpful.

I was wondering if you think that if would be possible to see some of Kerala (flying in from Sri Lanka), before heading north to Mumbai eventually flying to Delhi to explore the surrounding area and some of Rajasthan? Having not been to the country I wouldn’t want to rush it or overlook certain areas by fitting too much in.

Any feedback would be appreciated 🙂

Hi Callum, We are so sorry we missed this comment. If you travel for one month you can certainly combine the south and north of India but it might be a little rushed. But that depends on how many destinations you visit in each region and how you travel in between the regions. Be in touch and we can figure it out together: [email protected]

Best, Your India Someday Team

Hi. Route 1 lookjs great. Is this based on pr8vate transport or public. Also, woukd going to pondicherry after kerala be doable. What cities would fly into and out of?

Hi Michelle,

We can plan any transport and according to any budget you like. Pondicherry after Kerala would only be possible with another domestic flight to Chennai, everything else would take too long. Get in touch with us to plan your trip and we figure something out for you.
