St Kitts Cruise Port Guide - Spending a Day in St Kitts

Spend the perfect day in paradise with this St Kitts cruise port guide.

Although I’ve travelled aboard nearly 10 Caribbean cruises in the past, this was my first time visiting the beautiful island of St. Kitts and Nevis. When you only have about eight hours in port, you have to make the most of your time there. Naturally, only one day in a country is not nearly enough time to become absorbed or familiar with it, but it’s better than nothing.

I’m a firm believer that cruises are fantastic for a few reasons. First of all, it’s an easy way to travel. You get to leave your luggage in one place, dining choices are easy and plentiful, and many aspects of the holiday are completely included in the cost of the trip. Second, you get to travel to a whole bunch of places without experiencing the pains of travelling. There are no stressful airport visits between countries, no hectic train stations to navigate, and you don’t need to figure out how to get from point A to point B. Last, while you might only get a taste of each place, you’ll discover your favourites. These are the places that you’ll want to visit again for a more in depth trip.

Needless to say, St. Kitts and Nevis is one of those places I’m itching to return to again. Just one day in St Kitts is only scraping the surface, but I’m so grateful to have experienced this gorgeous island, if only for a day. With this St Kitts cruise port guide, you’ll be able to easily enjoy your day on the island by visiting the port itself and venturing out to a beautiful beach.

Our ship, the MSC Divina , arrived early in the morning. With only two cruise ships in port, it wasn’t very busy. As Justin and I had planned an afternoon shore excursion, I woke up bright and early to explore while Justin caught a couple more hours of sleep.

Walking down the dock, I was immediately greeted by a bright, yellow building with flags and signs. One of them stated, “Welcome to St. Kitts – Home of the Brimstone Hill Fortress, the Gibraltar of the West Indies – A UNESCO World Heritage Site.” If visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites is up your alley (I enjoy it myself!), you’ll want to check out Brimstone Hill Fortress. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the chance, but it’s one thing I’d like to return to see.

For those interested in buying some souvenirs or indulging in some retail therapy, check out the shopping malls around Port Zante, Basseterre’s cruise port and shopping centre.

In Port Zante, there are more than 60 duty-free shops offering jewelry, watches, souvenirs, t-shirts, and other wares. I also spotted a small coffee shop, as well as a unique store with silkscreen handmade goods.

I stumbled upon a small crafts market with booths featuring trinkets, handmade jewelry, and other inexpensive souvenirs.

The pastel buildings lining the gated streets in Port Zante are quite picturesque for a shopping centre.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ST. KITTS

The Treasury Building, built in 1894, is now home to the National Museum of St. Kitts. It highlights the culture and heritage of St. Kitts and Nevis. While I only admired this beautiful building from outside, be sure to explore this museum if you find yourself with enough time in port.

If you continue walking through the archway of the Treasury Building, you’ll leave the port area into downtown Basseterre.

The Circus is an octagonal roundabout, modelled after London’s Piccadilly Circus. The Berkeley Memorial is the focal point in the centre of the plaza, featuring a clock and a drinking fountain. Each of the four clock faces points towards one of the streets that lead to the Circus. If you’re into local landmarks, make a quick pit stop at the Circus to snap a few photos.

INDEPENDENCE SQUARE

St Kitts Cruise Port Guide - Spending a Day in St Kitts

From the Circus, roam around town a little bit and eventually, I am sure you will find Independence Square . This square was originally the site of the slave market as slaves were transported from Africa. It was renamed as Independence Square (from Pall Mall Square) when St. Kitts and Nevis achieved independence in 1983.

The central focal point of Independence Square is a stone fountain to commemorate the introduction of pipe borne water into Basseterre in the 19th century.

VENTURE OUT TO THE BEACH

St Kitts Cruise Port Guide - Spending a Day in St Kitts

One of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen in the world is Cockleshell Beach in St. Kitts . We took an excursion with the cruise ship to visit Cockleshell Beach. It’s possible to go there without an organized tour. In the port, it will be easy to find a taxi driver to take you there. It’s approximately $28-30 for up to four people, one way.

On the way to Cockleshell Beach, you’ll be able to admire the beauty of the island from the vehicle. There’s a scenic outlook on the way where you can view the Caribbean Sea on one side of the road, and the Atlantic Ocean on the other from up high on a mountain.

Our excursion included transportation and lounger chairs to use, and you can also rent umbrellas. We preferred to soak up the sunshine!

If you’re looking for another gorgeous beach that’s closer to the port, check out South Friars Beach. It’s about $4 per person to take a taxi there. It is a little bit more convenient to visit and also quite beautiful. However, due to its proximity to the port, it will likely be more crowded and I feel as though the view at Cockleshell Beach is more spectacular.

OTHER TOUR SUGGESTIONS

While I really enjoyed walking around the St Kitts cruise port and downtown Basseterre, definitely get out there and take a tour or excursion if you can. See as much of the island as you can. We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing day in the sunshine at Cockleshell Beach. Next time we’re in St. Kitts, we’d like to explore one of the following other options:

  • Brimstone Hill Fortress :  Because I’m a sucker for UNESCO World Heritage Sites. See all the main sites on a taxi tour.
  • St Kitts Scenic Railway Tour: It’s a three hour trip on the first scenic railway tour in the Caribbean.
  • Catamaran Cruise to Nevis : A day trip on a boat to the neighbouring island of Nevis? Yes, please!
  • Rainforest Tour in St. Kitts : Spend the day in nature to see natural springs, tall trees, and maybe even a monkey or two.

I agree with you that voyaging on water is much easier compared to flights and trains. But is it cheaper also? St Kitts looks so, so gorgeous, and I know a day wouldn't be enough to explore it completely.

St Kitts looks like a beautiful place to visit, especially around the Cockleshell Beach. I also love the architecture along Port Zante. It looks so picturesque.

We spent 2 weeks on St. Kitts a few years ago, in a condo with a rental car for one week. Brimstone Fortress is a must for anyone into history, architecture, forts, or UNESCO site bucket lists. We spent 5 hours exploring on our own, much to the surprise of the very laid back staff. It is quite amazing. I also highly recommend the St Kitts sugarcane train. You take a bus one way and the train the other, getting great commentary and seeing the island from the second level above the height of the sugar cane that is still grown there. The views of the island and Caribbean are spectacular - and the included rum punch and local singers add to the fun. The scuba diving is different than other Caribbean locations, with much fewer tourists and lots of nurse sharks and lobsters along with the usual fish, coral and sponges. There is a batik factory to have a tour and shop with very reasonable prices for handmade clothes and fabrics, and enjoy the spectacular jungle views. You can also find the usual ATV tours, ziplining the jungle, and shopping. The drive to the ferry to the sister island of Nevis is an eco shock in itself, with the lovely beaches and greenery giving way to desert-like salt marshes. Then the ferry was its own adventure, with a WWII landing craft-style boat, cars parked so tight that you have to decide whether to get out before they park the next one, and park benches tied onto the deck railings for seating! St Kitts and Nevis are transitioning out of being the last source of commercial sugar cane in the Caribbean, to building a tourist industry so it has a quaintness to it not seen on other islands. I highly recommend a longer visit than a cruise stop! But if that is all you have, my vote would be the Scenic Railroad and Brimstone Fortress - and if you can sneak in a stop to the batik factory it is worth it.

Basseterre – St. Kitts & Nevis

Step into the charming capital of St. Kitts & Nevis, Basseterre. Discover the colonial architecture, wander through the bustling markets, or take a scenic train ride around the island. Delight in the fusion of Caribbean and European flavors, and don't miss the chance to explore the breathtaking beaches and lush landscapes that make this destination truly captivating.

St. Kitts and Nevis are two small islands located in the heart of the Caribbean, separated by a narrow 2 mile straight. St. Kitts, the island on which Basseterre is located, is lush and green with tropical rainforests and abandoned sugar cane plantations that are slowly going wild. Creatures like the mongoose and green vervet monkey call this island their home. The dormant volcano of Mount Liamuiga stands proud watch over its domain.   Basseterre, the capital, is a small city of 35,000 people with a mixed English and French heritage and a long tragic history. Despite having been destroyed many times by war, fire, earthquakes, floods and hurricanes, Basseterre manages to capture the hearts of visitors with its picturesque colonial houses, quaint shops and vibrant life.

EC dollars are preferred, and having dollar coins on you will make the trip simpler. Most trips will cost 2-3 EC dollars depending on the distance travelled.

The process can be watched by the public and the surrounding gardens and the remains of the original plantation make an interesting side trip. If you visit, be sure to try the rum cake!

The Strip – If action is what you are looking for, the Strip on Frigate Bay is certainly where you’ll find it! Known for its vibrant night-life and variety of music and entertainment, The Strip isn’t just a night-time location. This blend is evident in the island’s festivals, cuisine, music, and daily life, creating a unique cultural identity that is both diverse and unified.

Historical Influence

St. Kitts has a storied past that significantly shapes its cultural landscape.

The island was among the first in the Caribbean to be colonized by Europeans, with both the British and the French establishing settlements in the 17th century.

The spirit of St. Kitts shines brightest during its festivals.

The most notable is the St. Kitts Carnival , also known as Sugar Mas, which takes place from late December to early January.

It’s a spectacular celebration of music, dance, and costume that reflects the island’s African and Caribbean heritage.

Calypso and soca music competitions, street parades with vibrant costumes, and traditional folklore performances are central to the festivities.

The cuisine of St. Kitts is a delightful blend of Caribbean flavors, African influences, and a touch of European and Asian tastes.

Its culinary landscape is marked by the use of fresh local ingredients, including seafood, tropical fruits, and root vegetables, creating dishes that are as vibrant and colorful as the island itself. Here’s a taste of St. Kitts’ culinary offerings:

Signature Dishes

  • Stewed Saltfish : A traditional breakfast dish, saltfish (salted cod) is soaked to reduce its saltiness, then stewed with tomatoes, onions, sweet peppers, and spices. It’s commonly served with spicy plantains, coconut dumplings, or breadfruit.
  • Goat Water : Despite its name, goat water is a hearty stew made with goat meat, breadfruit, green papaya, and dumplings, seasoned with local herbs and spices. This dish is a staple at festive occasions and a must-try for those seeking authentic Kittitian flavors.
  • Conch Fritters : Conch, a type of sea snail, is minced and mixed with flour, eggs, and seasonings, then deep-fried until golden. Served with a dipping sauce, these fritters are a popular snack or appetizer.
  • Roti : Influenced by Indian cuisine, roti in St. Kitts is a flatbread filled with curried chicken, beef, or vegetables. It’s a favorite for a filling lunch.
  • Johnny Cakes : These are small, fried breads, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, often eaten as a side dish or for breakfast.

The fertile volcanic soil of St. Kitts yields an abundance of fruits and vegetables. Mangoes, papayas, pineapples, soursop, and guavas are just a few of the tropical fruits that add a sweet and tangy flavor to many dishes.

Street food in St. Kitts offers a genuine taste of island life.

Food trucks and roadside stalls serve up delicious, quick meals like grilled fish, barbecue ribs, and jerk chicken, often accompanied by rice and peas, salad, or local vegetables. It’s an affordable way to enjoy the local flavors.

  • Rum : As in much of the Caribbean, rum is the spirit of choice in St. Kitts, with local distilleries producing a variety of styles. Rum punch is a ubiquitous and refreshing cocktail.
  • Mauby : A traditional drink made from the bark of the mauby tree, fermented and sweetened, often described as an acquired taste due to its bitter undertone.
  • Sugarcane Juice : Once a major sugarcane producer, St. Kitts offers fresh sugarcane juice, a sweet, refreshing drink, often sold by street vendors.

Desserts in St. Kitts often feature local fruits and spices. Coconut is a favorite ingredient, used in cakes, candies, and tarts. Guava cheese, a sweet, concentrated jam-like treat, and sweet potato pudding are also popular.

The food of St. Kitts is a direct reflection of its history, culture, and the rich natural resources of the island. Dining in St. Kitts, whether at a high-end restaurant, a local eatery, or a street food stall, provides a delightful culinary journey through the flavors of the Caribbean.

As cruise ships begin sailing the Caribbean once again, islands are getting ready to welcome back tourists to their shores. St. Kitts is one such island getting ready for cruise tourism and Port Zante has everything cruisers need to shop, eat, drink and have fun just steps away from the ship.

St. Kitts has invested heavily in their cruise port over the past few years, including the addition of a second cruise pier in 2019. The new pier came after the island saw more than 1 million cruise guests visit the island in 2018 and for a second time in 2019, a new record. The island also saw a record four major cruise ships in port at one time in December of 2019 after construction was completed on the second pier.

If you’re cruising into St. Kitts’ Port Zante , here’s a helpful guide of what to expect when you get off the cruise ship!

St Kitts Cruise Port Guide & The Perfect One Day Itinerary

' src=

This St Kitts cruise port guide will explain what to do in one day, the best tours and excursions, and other travel tips.

St Kitts is a beautiful, lush island in the Southern Caribbean. It’s a common port on a Southern Caribbean cruise, and a great standalone vacation destination.

When I visited Basseterre St Kitts on my Southern Caribbean cruise, I honestly had low expectations. It was less known to me, and I wasn’t sure what to do during our visit.

I was pleasantly surprised that St Kitts became my favorite port of the entire trip!

St Kitts and Nevis is the perfect combination of lush greenery, white sand beaches, and crystal-clear water. During my one day in St Kitts, I opted for a beach day at my new favorite beach bar.

Below, find a list of some other great activities on the island. Keep reading for this ultimate St Kitts cruise port guide and one day itinerary.

St Kitts One Day Itinerary

There are many great things to do in St Kitts and Nevis. In the next section, I list a few great options. Below, learn how I spent my one day in St Kitts for a sample one-day itinerary in port.

When I take a Caribbean cruise, one of my biggest priorities in port is seeing the beauty of the island and enjoying the amazing weather.

For this reason, I opted for a beach day in St Kitts. We also stopped at a few viewpoints on the way to the beach to capture photos of the fantastic views.

Cockleshell Beach & Reggae Beach Bar

st kitts cruise port shopping

If you are a beach bum like me, the best beach in St Kitts is Cockleshell Beach. Its only a short drive from the cruise port and has four different beach bars.

The beach is protected by a bay with great swimming and fine sand beaches. Its also the stop to catch a boat to the sister island of Nevis.

While there are at least four different beach bars at Cockleshell beach, there are two I recommend:

They are Reggae Beach Bar and the Spice Mill . The Spice Mill is more upscale, but Reggae is livelier and my personal favorite.

During my one day in St Kitts, we caught a taxi from the cruise port to the beach for $30. We then spent the day at Reggae Beach bar where we rented chairs for $5 each and an umbrella for $10.

The beach bar has service to your seats and offers delicious cocktails and food. My favorite item was the Reggae Colada which is a pina colada with passion fruit instead of pineapple.

After an incredible and relaxing day at the beach, our taxi driver returned to pick us up. On the way back, I highly recommend stopping at a viewpoint to see amazing views of the island. Your taxi driver will know of the best viewpoints if you ask.

Other Fun Things to Do in St Kitts

st kitts cruise port shopping

If you have more time than a day in St Kitts or aren’t feeling a beach day. The following three activities are a great way to spend your day.

Snorkeling is great throughout the Caribbean and St Kitts is no exception. This half-day tour is a great option for snorkeling in St Kitts.

It includes snorkel equipment, an open bar, a light lunch, and stops at some of the best snorkeling locations.

The catamaran itself is luxurious, with comfortable seating and lounging, private restrooms, and is a great medium size to meet new people without experiencing crowds.

Nevis Day Trip

Nevis is St Kitts’ sister island, only a short boat ride away. Compared to St Kitts, Nevis is less populated, less crowded, and more remote.

A day trip to Nevis is a great way to spend a day in St Kitts. This full day catamaran trip to Nevis includes an open bar, buffet lunch, swim in the ocean, and beach break on Nevis.

I love this excursion because it’s a great way to spend time on the water and see Nevis. Its also a more comfortable way to transit to the island compared to the public taxi boats.

Historic Train Ride

One of the most popular activities in St Kitts is taking a scenic train ride. I personally think this tour is a bit overpriced but may be worth it for some.

The tour includes rum punch, and a ride throughout the island of St Kitts. I recommend this activity for people with mobility issues as it’s a great way to see the island without much physical strain.

Frequently Asked Questions About St Kitts

Before we get into the details of this St Kitts cruise port guide, here are some quick answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about St Kitts.

When is the best time to visit St Kitts?

St Kitts is a fantastic vacation destination with amazing weather year-round with the exception of hurricane season from June through September.

What is the official currency of St Kitts?

While the official currency of St Kitts is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, the US dollar is widely accepted.

What is the official language of St Kitts?

English is the only official language of St Kitts and Nevis.

How to get a taxi in the St Kitts cruise port?

There isn’t an official taxi stand in St Kitts (at least from my experience). From the moment you walk off the ship, taxi drivers will be approaching you, which is a bit overwhelming. The best practice is knowing what amount you want to pay and keep asking people for that price to your destination until someone agrees. Generally, they will originally offer $10 higher than they are willing to accept.

Where to Stay in St Kitts

st kitts cruise port shopping

I have only visited St Kitts as a cruise port. If you choose to visit for longer, you are for sure in for a treat!

During my recent visit, I checked out some of the resorts on the island to scope out where I’d stay on a longer visit in the future.

The top two resorts in St Kitts are the Park Hyatt and the Marriott. They are both great options, and I’d choose based on your hotel program preference (I’m a Marriott Bonvoy gal).

The Park Hyatt St Kitts is bright, beachy, and luxurious. My favorite part is the giant resort pool that overlooks the ocean. The hotel also has a kid’s pool, three restaurants, a spa, and a gym. They also offer an all-inclusive option.

The Marriott St Kitts is a giant, beautiful property. The resort has two pools, an 18-hole golf course, a casino, and 7 onsite restaurants.

You could spend an entire trip on the property and never get bored. As with the Park Hyatt, the Marriott has an all-inclusive option.

Summary of this St Kitts Cruise Port Guide

If you takeaway one thing from this St Kitts cruise port guide, it should be to not underestimate the island.

It’s a great port with many things to do from relaxing at the beach, to sightseeing from a train, to a day trip to Nevis. With so many great activities, you cannot go wrong with visiting St Kitts for a day or for longer.

If you plan to visit St Kitts on a cruise, plan your day around any one of the activities above. If you are visiting on a standalone trip, take your time with one activity each day.

The Pier Area: Three different piers, including separate ones for cruise ships and the "Caribe Queen," the island ferry that runs between St. Kitts and Charlestown, the capital of Nevis. Friday and Saturday are particularly good times to be at the pier, when the colorful produce and vegetable market is in session. The terminal area at port Zante has restaurants, shops, and cafes, and it's about a 10-minute stroll into downtown Basseterre also called "The Circus".

As of 2020 the pier is capable of handling four large cruise ships at once. If more than four ships are calling, the other ships will either use the cargo port or tender passengers ashore.

The passengers can walk directly through the "duty free" shopping area and onward to the central downtown area. Before giving you duty-free rates, merchants often ask for something that shows you are not a resident, such as a cruise card, foreign driver's licence, or a passport.

Sightseeing:

An hour's easy walk will show you the highlights of Basseterre, the capital of St. Kitts with about 15,000 inhabitants. Basseterre is ideal for exploring on foot since everything is laid out in square blocks.

Basseterre has been the British capital of St. Kitts since 1727, though it was part of the French sector when the two nations both held the island.

The name Basseterre in French means "low land," which most of the commercial district certainly is; it has been flooded several times.

Be sure to notice the colorful red and yellow wooden fishing boats near the pier with their nets drying in the sun; they make great photos.

Treasury Building Standing right on the waterfront, this domed colonial building is a reminder of the importance of the islands as sugar colonies. Everything that arrived at or departed from St. Kitts went through these arches.

Beware of the guys with the monkeys. They will charge you if their monkeys jump on you and you take a picture.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Taxis are generally available for trips farther afield. Be sure to agree on the fare with the driver before starting out.

Many tour operators are at the dock, often with reasonable fares.

The St. Kitts Scenic Railway takes passengers on a 3-hour tour that makes a 30-mile circle around the beautiful Eastern Caribbean island of St. Kitts, with 18 miles by narrow gauge train and 12 miles on sightseeing buses.

Sky Safari Tours is a highly advanced, scenic zip line tour through the St. Kitts Rainforest, flying over Wingfrield River. This zip line course consists of one trainer line, 180ft long, followed by four larger zip line, lengths from 500ft to 1,350 ft. This tour strives to unite eco-adventure with St. Kitts interpretive knowledge.

Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of historical, cultural and architectural significance: a monument to the ingenuity of the British military engineers who designed it and to the skill, strength and endurance of the African slaves who built and maintained it.

Due to strange driving license rules, car rental is not a good option.

St. Kitts Cruise Port: Attractions, Beaches, Weather

The St. Kitts cruise port is climbing in popularity because of new and improved terminal and several noteworthy attractions.

The island is showing up more often as a destination on eastern Caribbean cruises that include such ports as St. Maarten, San Juan and Grand Turk. The most popular months to visit St. Kitts are January and March, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.

Cruise visitors will disembark at Port Zante next to the capital city of Basseterre on the southern coast of the island. They will find the mostly oval-shaped island is easy to tour because of its small size—69 square miles.

Unlike many islands, St. Kitts doesn’t just have a cruise terminal that consists of one or two buildings. It has an entire cruise mall.

Quick Travel Tips

Attractions and shore excursions, walking around attractions, st. kitts cruise port map.

The Port Zante cruise terminal is a duty-free shopping district with more than 60 shops selling the usual variety of goods in Caribbean cruise ports. Visitors can spend a couple of hours doing nothing but shopping and dining at outdoor restaurants.

On some days, colorful performers entertain visitors with dance and music. The district also is the starting point for various shore excursions.

People who walk a few hundred yards through the Port Zante district will reach the city of Basseterre, beginning with The Circus. The Circus is an octagonal plaza that resembles a small version of London’s famous Piccadilly Circus.

Visitors often photograph the Berkeley Memorial Drinking Fountain and Clock. Erected in 1891, it commemorates a 19th-century politician and estate owner.

Cruise visitors can hardly miss the National Museum of St. Kitts, which is right between Port Zante and The Circus.

Another option within walking distance of the cruise ship terminal is the Basseterre Ferry Terminal. It is only a brief walk to the west of Port Zante. Visitors take a 30-minute ferry to visit the nearby island of Nevis, which offers some nice beaches.

Port Zante also is the starting point for various shore excursions, including the ones that go to Nevis for the beaches and other activities.

Shore Excursions

Every Caribbean destination has beaches, shopping and nightlife, but practically none has a train for tourists except St. Kitts.

The St. Kitts Scenic Railway is a narrow gauge train that takes visitors on a three-hour, 30-mile circular tour of the island. The tour consists of 18 miles on the train and 12 miles on tour buses. Tickets start at more than $100 per person with discounts for children. The excursion costs about $130 to $140 per person depending on time of year and other factors.

The train had been used to transport sugarcane from the island plantations to Basseterre from 1912 to 1949.

Like many Caribbean cruise ports, St. Kitts has a facility where visitors can swim with dolphins. Prices vary with the programs, but they usually range between $100 and $150 per person.

The Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a well-preserved fort dating back to 1690, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Brimstone is one of the best preserved forts in the Caribbean. It is 30 minutes northwest of the cruise docks and available as a shore excursion. The fort is often included in guided tours of the island, which cost about $60 to $75 per person.

St. Kitts is one of the islands in the Caribbean with a Dolphin Discovery where visitors can swim with dolphins. Prices usually start at more than $100 per person and depend on which program visitors choose.

Other popular attractions include climbing the 3,800-foot Mount Liamuiga and a 30-minute ferry ride to nearby Nevis at about $8 a ticket.

Mount Liamuiga, a dormant volcano that is 3,792 feet high, dominates the western half of the island and acts as one of the major attractions. Adventurous souls can hike to the top of it for expansive views of the island and the sister island of Nevis. Shore excursion prices start at about $75 per person including transportation.

One major road along the coast circles the island and the volcano, which allows visitors to reach various attractions quickly and easily. Because of the volcano, a large part of the island is not easy to visit except for the most fit and adventurous cruise visitors.

Nevis is known for beaches, hiking and other nature-based land activities. It is a quiet island that is known more for its natural attractions and a handful of hotels and resorts.

Some excursions will take visitors across the water to see the island. Shore excursion prices usually start at about $100 per person including the ferry ride and beach amenities such as chair, umbrella and beverages. Anyone going on their own can simply spend $8 on a ferry ticket.

Beaches Near the Cruise Port

St. Kitts is not known for its beaches, but it has several within driving distance of Basseterre. If taking a taxi to the beach, be sure to ask for rates before getting into a cab.

Some cruise lines offer Frigate Bay as a shore excursion for about $40 to $50 per person. It has a one-mile stretch of white sand and many activities including windsurfing and waterskiing. It also has nearby bars and restaurants. The duration is about four hours.

South Friars Bay on the Caribbean side of the island is a popular choice with local amenities. More active visitors might prefer North Friars Bay on the Atlantic side. It has a much stronger surf.

Anyone thinking about seeing Brimstone Hill Fortress can combine that trip with a visit to the black sands of Pump Bay beach.

Otherwise, most shore excursions combine something adventurous with a beach visit. They include ATV and 4x4 rides. Prices for these excursions usually range between $75 and $150.

Note all excursion prices are subject to change.

Shopping and Restaurants

The port has two docks, but the newer and more popular dock is Port Zande.

Visitors will immediately see exhibits, displays and cruise operators as they walk off the ship.

Right past this point is the Zande duty-free shopping area, which offers fine jewelry, liquor, souvenirs and restaurants.

Next is Pelican Mall, the ground floor of which houses the headquarters of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority . Stop there for any questions about things to see and do on the island.

Also nearby are the National Museum and the Circus, an octagonal plaza that is similar to a miniature version of London’s famous Piccadilly Circus.

In the center of the Circus is the Berkeley Memorial Drinking Fountain and Clock, erected in 1891. Around the edge is more duty-free shops, banks and restaurants.

Getting Around / Transportation

The St. Kitts cruise port is a walking destination. The mall area is massive, and it’s right next to Basseterre. So a few hours of walking to shop, dine and view local attractions is a given.

Taxi rates are posted rather than metered. Each location on the island has a specific fare.

A car rental is a good idea for any cruise visitors with enough time to spare because St. Kitts has a number of decent attractions around the island.

Like other destinations, most of the car rental agencies cluster around Basseterre and next to the nearby airport.

Most of the agencies are locally owned. At least two international companies have a presence—Avis and Thrifty.

However, drivers need a permit that costs $24. Cruise visitors who plan to visit more than one attractions around the county may find that renting a car is less expensive than taking two separate tour buses.

St. Kitts Weather

St. Kitts lies close to Antigua and St. Maarten and shares common weather patterns.

Average monthly high temperatures range between the low 80s Fahrenheit in the winter to the upper 80s in the summer. They make the island a warm destination year round.

Rain is moderate except for a brief rainy season in May and a spike in rainfall in September through November during the annual Caribbean hurricane season.

As such, eastern Caribbean cruises that include St. Kitts hit a high point from December through March during the dry season. They reach a low point in the fall during the a time of heavier rains.

St. Kitts Cruise Port: Basic Info

The name of the St. Kitt cruise port is Port Zante.

The St. Kitts cruise port is probably one of the nicest Caribbean cruise ports. The St. Kitts cruise port also has one of the most places to shop.

St. Kitts Cruise Port Shops & Shopping

View of Port Zonte and St. Kitts Shops

Out of all the cruise ports that my mom and I visited during our last Caribbean cruise, the St. Kitts cruise port probably has the most shops.

The St. Kitts cruise port (Port Zante) is known for having luxury shops, as well as lots of shops selling t-shirts, long-sleeve t-shirts, sweatshirts, beach bags, and rash guards.

St. Kitts also has some great jewelry stores selling matching necklaces and earring sets that either look like the real thing or are real.

If you want to buy high-quality jewelry on your cruise, I think that the St. Kitts cruise port is the best place to shop.

Shopping Tips for St. Kitts Cruise Port (Port Zante)

Like all Caribbean islands, I would recommend against buying fancy jewelry while shopping in St. Kitts . The jewelry is over-priced in my opinion.

However, some of the dupe jewelry sets in St. Kitts cruise port were well priced and look just as good as the real thing.

I’d also recommend against buying any UPF shirts in the stores. I found a Guy Harvey shirt in St. Kitts for $65 that was only $35 on Amazon. I LOVE my Guy Harvey shirt from Amazon . I bought the men's shirt in a size small. It is so, so soft!!

You could also buy one for women:

What are the best things to do in Basseterre, St. Kitts?

The 3 best things to do in Basseterre, St. Kitts are to snorkel at Shitten Bay and Ballast Bay, swim with the dolphins at Dolphin Discovery, and go to the beach.

St. Kitts Cruise Port Excursions: Best Things to Do in St. Kitts for Cruise Travelers

1. Snorkeling at Shitten Bay and Ballast Bay

2. Swimming with the dolphins

3. Go to the beach (I love South Friar’s Beach the most)

Brimstone Fortress is a popular excursion, but I wouldn't suggest visiting the fort. There are better things to do in St. Kitts.

Brimstone Fortress is 10 miles away from the St. Kitts cruise port and a 25-30 minute drive.

The Romney Manor (6 miles away) is also a popular excursion for cruise travelers. However, Romney Manor wouldn't make my list of the top 5 best things to do in St. Kitts.

Carambola Beach Club: Best DIY Excursion and Thing to Do in St. Kitts

Carambola Beach Club Beach Area in St. Kitts

When my mom and I go to St. Kitts, my favorite thing to do is go to Carambola Beach Club.

The Carambola Beach Club has a beautiful beach (South Friar's Bay Beach), a swimming area, beach chairs, and great WI-FI.

The cruise charged $44.95 per person for a ride to Carambola Beach Club and entrance into the beach club.

Carambola Beach Club Excursion from the Cruise Ship for 2 People= $90

DIY Price to Go to Carambola Beach Club from St. Kitts Cruise Port

My mom and I went to Carambola Beach Club solo. We paid $28 for the taxi round trip ($7 per person each way) plus $30 for the beach club entrance for two people.

$30 includes two beach chairs and an umbrella.

Taxi to Carambola Beach Club Plus Two Beach Chairs and an Umbrella (Carambola Beach Club Day Pass) for 2 People = $58

So, instead of paying about $45 per person through the ship’s Carambola Beach Club excursion, we enjoyed the Carambola Beach Club for $29 per person .

Carambola Beach Club St. Kitts Day Pass

If you don’t want a beach chair and an umbrella, a Carambola Beach Club Day Pass is $5 per person.

If you buy an umbrella ($10) and a beach chair ($10), the $5 Day Carambola Beach Club Day Pass fee is waived.

The Carambola Beach Club Day Pass fee is also waived if you buy food or drinks.

The Food at Carambola Beach Club

Carambola Beach Club Eating Area

The Carambola Beach Club has food, which is nice.

However, plan on your food taking 45 minutes to arrive. They are on Caribbean time. 😊

A burger and fries cost us $22 at the beach club, so it isn’t cheap. However, the $22 included the tip and all taxes, which was nice.

Carambola Beach Club Menu

The Carambola Beach Club menu for lunch includes sandwiches, pizzas, burgers, and chicken entrees.

The Taxi Ride to Carambola Beach Club from St. Kitts Cruise Port

shuttle bus/taxi in St. Kitts cruise port

The taxi ride to St. Kitts Carambola Beach Club/South Friar’s Bay is $7 per person each way.

It is a 15-minute taxi ride to South Friar’s Beach.

Plan on 20 minutes though. Most taxis stop at a beautiful lookout point at Timothy Hill.

The Water at South Friar's Bay

South Friar's Beach

The water is beautiful at South Friar's Bay! And the water is super calm at the Carambola Beach Club. 🙂

I personally ALWAYS get cold in the water (unless I am in Florida), so I always pack a light wet suit when I travel on a cruise . Believe me...this wet suit is a game changer! It keeps you warm and protects you from the sun.

St John’s Antigua Cruise Port: Everything you need to know

M y name is Sara and I’ve spent the last 3 winters living in Antigua with my family.  We come each year as my boyfriend is a yacht captain and the boat he works on is based in Antigua.  We’ve joined in with the local community, especially as our sons go to school on the island.

I’ve also worked on cruise ships as  I used to manage the spa outlets on all of the P&O and Cunard cruise ships.  So I know how exciting a port day can be!

I’ve gathered my insider tips and knowledge for a day in Antigua.

Where is St John’s Cruise Port Antigua Located?

The cruise port is located in Deepwater Harbour which is in St John’s.  St John’s is the capital of Antigua.  It’s right in the town and you can walk there very easily.

How to Get to the City of St John’s from the Cruise Port

It’s very easy to walk to St John’s from the cruise port as the ships dock in the town itself.  Once you disembark the cruise ship and leave the terminal you are in the town.  You’ll be by Heritage Quay which is the main shopping area.

Are there Free Shuttles from St John’s Antigua Cruise Port?

There are no free shuttles as there is no need for them as you can walk there.

Can you walk into St John’s from your cruise ship?

Yes, as the town is at the end of the cruise ship terminal.  You will walk to St John’s to be able to take any tours or taxis to leave the cruise port.

Are there taxis available from St John’s Antigua Cruise Port?

Yes, there are a lot of taxis in St John’s Antigua that will be waiting to take you to explore the island.  You’ll find them generally on Heritage Quay which is at the end of the ship dock.

✅ You should confirm the price of your taxi before you leave St John’s.  Also, depending on where you go, you might want to ask the taxi to wait.

There is no Uber on the island and getting a taxi outside of the main tourist attractions can be tricky.  Most people tend to book their drive for the day and ask them to wait as they visit different locations on the island.

Best Shore Excursions From St John’s Antigua Cruise Port

There are three ways to explore Antigua.

  • You can hire a taxi for the day following your own itinerary and their recommendations.
  • Rent a car and drive yourself.  This will give you a lot more flexibility and will be better value than hiring a taxi all day.
  • Take a shore excursion and there are plenty to choose from.

I’ve selected some of the cool places and activities to do in Antigua and listed them below.

Things to do in Antigua

Walking tour of st john’s.

This is ideal if you want a more relaxed port day and don’t want to travel too far.  St John’s is small, however, there’s enough to see and do to keep you busy for a couple of hours.

If you’re keen on the history of the town then you can visit the Antigua and Barbuda Museum, walk to the Cathedral, and then take in Old Recreation which is the old cricket ground.

For those of you who enjoy shopping, there is Heritage Quay for jewelry and tax-free shopping.  Or Redcliffe Quay for more local clothing and art.  You’ll also find in both quays a variety of bars, cafes, and restaurants to enjoy and people-watch from.

⭐️ Check Prices and Availability Here

Take a Cooking Class

If you’re into the tastes of the Caribbean, then why not take a cooking class? Nicole’s Table is the best in Antigua and she offers a variety of different classes.  She covers cooking with jerk flavors, making local curries, and dishes from the sea, and cooking with rum.

⭐️ I’ve tried her jerk class and it was super tasty! Check availability here!

Visit Stingray City

This is one of my must-do things in Antigua – swimming and feeding the stingrays .

Antigua is one of the only places in the world where you can swim and interact with stingrays.  ( You can visit them in Grand Cayman too !) Whenever friends and family come to visit it’s the number one experience that I encourage them to try.

During the tour, you are taken out to a remote pontoon on the edge of a reef where the stingrays congregate for feeding.  Your guides will help you into the water and encourage you to snorkel around them.

You’ll also have an opportunity to feed them and to carefully hold one in the water.  They also have a professional photographer at hand to capture the moment for you. so you’ll get a great photo of you with a stingray!

⭐️ Book Early, Check Availability Now

Snorkeling or Scuba Diving Tour

Antigua is a fantastic place to visit if you want to see turtles, rays, and much more.

If you’re a snorkeler the easiest way to get to see them from the cruise port is to take a boat tour.  Most of the good spots on the island require a boat to reach them.

There are lots of different tours to choose from.  I’d particularly recommend Eli’s Eco Tour as you get to spend a good amount of time at some great locations in the north of Antigua near the cruise port.

For those of you who scuba dive , there are several dive centers on the island to choose from that can also offer courses.

⭐️ Book Snorkeling Here or Scuba Here

Nelson’s Dockyard

If local history interests you then the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Nelson’s Dockyard is fantastic.  It’s a restored British naval base, and yes, it’s where Nelson was based for a time.

It’s an open-air museum so very interactive and great for all ages, plus an actual museum space as well.  Plenty of tour companies run from the cruise port to Nelson’s Dockyard, or you can drive yourself and follow the sign inside.

There’s also plenty of space to stretch your legs or let little ones run loose.  And lots to see it’s still an active marina today, you can also watch yachts and their crew come and go.  You can even walk up to the old fort and get an incredible view back over the marina.

✅ This is the top rated Historical Tour in Antigua

Rum Making Masterclass at Galleon Beach

If you’re looking for something a little different, and want to combine snorkeling at a beach, with one of the best restaurants on the island and some rum tasting then this is the day out for you.

Galleon Bay is located in the south of the island and whilst it’s got a very chilled-out vibe, it’s got a lot to keep you busy for the day.  There’s fantastic snorkelling at a couple of wrecks which are located just off of the beach and you’ve got a good chance of seeing turtles!

In the middle of the beach is Loose Cannon Bar and Restaurant , which serves some of the best beach food on the island – we eat there a lot, and so I’ve tasted most of the delicious menu.  As well as this, there’s a rum-making masterclass workshop behind the restaurant where you can blend your own rum!

A fun, and alternative way to spend a day!

⭐️ Check Availability for the Rum-Making Course

If you enjoy a bit of an adrenaline rush whilst you’re away, and are happy to fly through the air on a zipline , then this is the activity for you.  Located in a tropical rainforest , it’s not only fun but beautiful too.

They have a variety of different packages that you can choose from depending on how many zip lines you want to ride and if you want to add on the high-wire assault course at the end.

It operates in a tou r with set times so you complete the zip lines in a group.  The guides are very knowledgeable and make sure that you are comfortable so it’s suitable for total beginners and those scared of heights (like me!).  Plus they take children from 4 years old upwards so it’s fun for families too!

⭐️ Book your Zipline Tour Here

Explore A Beach Or Two

Antigua has over 365 stunning beaches to choose from , so you’ll be sure to find a beach to suit your needs.

Best for snorkeling – Galleon Beach or Lon Bay

Top for restaurant choice and activities – Dickenson Bay

Fun for families – Galleon Beach or Pigeon Point Beach

Best for off-the-beaten track – Rendezvous Bay or Half Moon Bay

One of the easiest ways to explore the beaches is on a land tour where they’ll take you a few different ones in a day.

Getting From The Airport To The Cruise Port

The closest airport to the cruise port is VC Bird International Airport which is 8.3km away.  The easiest way to get there is to take a taxi.  There is public transport, however, it’s not direct and so I wouldn’t recommend it.

Places To Stay Near St John’s Antigua Cruise Port

Antigua is renowned for it’s amazing all-inclusive resorts, so you’ll find lots of them to choose from, ones that are adults only, some that suit families, and even ones that cater to nudists.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay near St John’s, then these three are three places come highly recommended:

Royalton Antigua – just 4km from the cruise port, this family-friendly all-inclusive resort is extra special as they have wonderful sea villas that you can choose from and butler service.

Sandals Antigua – only 5km from the cruise port, this adult-only resort on the beach on Dickenson Bay, right in the middle of the action.  I’ve recently had friends who stayed there and said that they would highly recommend it.

Blue Waters Resort – slightly further away than the other two at 8.5km, this family-friendly luxury all-inclusive resort to the north of St John’s is well worth a visit.  We’ve been there ourselves on day passes to use the facilities and it’s a brilliant resort.  It’s got some great sailing equipment, a few different pools to choose from, and delicious food.

Antigua Quick Facts

  • English is the official language of Antigua and Barbuda.  They also speak Antiguan Creole which is an English-based Creole language spoken widely in the Leeward Islands which includes Saint Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, and Montserrat.
  • The currency of Antigua is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD) more locally called “EC”.  You’ll find that most things will be priced in EC, and higher-priced items such as tours and accommodation will also be advertised in US dollars.

Antigua is a popular country on the Caribbean cruising routes, and you’ll find up to 5 ships in the cruise port at any one time.

The benefit of this is that there are lots of different tours that you can take from St John’s, and many taxi drivers are ready to haggle for a day price to drive you around the island.

If you’re not looking to travel far, then you can relax in St John’s as the cruise port is conveniently located on the edge of the town.   You can easily walk to the town to take in some Antiguan history, shopping, and tasty food and drinks.

If beaches are more your thing, then the nearest is about an hour’s walk from the cruise port at St James Fort.  However, there are plenty of tour operators happy to take you to explore the other beaches.
