This Original Series  Bluetooth Communicator is not a toy: it is an advanced, Bluetooth wireless technology enabled communications device, designed to pair with a mobile phone and thus permit near instantaneous person-to-person communication at a considerable distance. When paired with a device capable of streaming music, the Communicator may also be used as a wireless music speaker.

This Communicator has been developed to give its owner the maximum level of enjoyment; designed using extremely accurate 3D scans of one of the last remaining communicator hero props from the 1960s Original Series television show, dedicated attention to detail, the use of authentic materials, textures and finishes and the tireless support and extraordinarily deep knowledge of HeroComm.com so generously given to us, has resulted in a fully functioning, display grade product that is highly faithful to the original prop.

The Communicator is robust enough to be used in play and cosplay. With its authentic sound effects and original voice clips, the Communicator provides plenty of opportunity for in-universe interaction and fun, and of course its Bluetooth functionality enables it to be used exactly as it was always intended – as a person-to-person communications device. The Communicator is not a walkie-talkie. In order to use it to talk to another person, you will also need a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone (or internet phone) that can make and receive telephone calls.

Pairing and using the Communicator with a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone to receive and make calls is straightforward

star trek communications

Pairing with a mobile phone is a simple procedure.

Once the Communicator is paired with a phone, just flip open the antenna grille to answer an incoming call.

Press and hold the right-hand button to initiate voice dialling (or to access other functions available via voice-activated assistants such as Siri on iPhones, Google Now on Android or Cortana on Windows phones).

Double-click the right-hand button to pause and play music.

20 authentic Star Trek voice clips and Communicator sound FX can be accessed at any time via the right-hand 5-way jog button.

What people are saying about the Communicator

The Verge The little device was actually designed using one of the original props from Star Trek, and is composed of a combination of pressed metal, aluminum, and textured plastic. Without having actually lived through the 1960s, I thought it felt authentic — weighty and purposeful for people in Starfleet. The grill flips opens with the actual sound effects from the show, and the speaker and transceiver make it look truly like a 23rd century artifact.

The Thrillist That sound you may have heard earlier today? The excited sobs of Trekkies everywhere when they saw that this bad boy is soon going to be a reality. The Wand Company just threw down a certified replica of the iconic Star Trek Original Series Communicator. A fully-functioning certified replica. Yeah!

Gizmodo This Bluetooth-equipped Star Trek Communicator is going to enable my bad habits even further—and my friends will hate me for it. Created by The Wand Company, a toy outfit that has a penchant for designing nerd treasure with actual real-world function.

Pocket Now Here’s where things get intense. The Wand Company wasn’t content merely to kick out a slightly refined version of the communicator toys we’ve seen for years; rather, building on the reproduction expertise it demonstrated with its earlier phaser remote control, it’s made the Star Trek Bluetooth Communicator a fully-fledged, museum-quality replica.

The Trek Collective …it is also probably the best reproduction of that prop ever offered.

Our customers

“It’s so great that you build all that stuff from the original show!!! Thanks for that!! I will buy some!”

“I wish I could high five each and everyone one of you at The Wand Company you all def deserve!”

“This is absolutely amazing. I just got through studying it. Heck, even the diagram is fantastic. I can’t imagine how great it will be to actually hold one of these in my hands.”

“I am very much looking forward to this, if it works like I hope it works, I may never talk directly on my phone again!”

“I’ve never even watched Star Trek and I honestly want this. Looks awesome.”

“This is awesome, Wand Company! Have wanted one of these for a long time and this was a great surprise when I came across it today! Every one of your products so far has been great! Keep it up!”

“I’ve been involved in the Star Trek prop-building community for a long time, and this is the holy grail. Commercially available “replicas” made up to this point have been pretty lackluster…and come in at many times the price of this and had no practical functionality at all.”

“This will look fantastic sitting next to my Phaser can’t wait.”

“Wow. You are spoiling us now….but THANK YOU!!! An already top quality product just got better!”

A Communicator that really works is a dream come true for fans who have waited 50 years for the function of this iconic prop to be realised.

Ever since James Tiberius Kirk flipped that gold-coloured antenna grille, called the Enterprise’s Chief Engineer orbiting 1000 kilometres above him, and asked to be beamed up, every Star Trek fan, in fact pretty much every science fiction fan, has wistfully dreamed of having a working Communicator of their own.

The Communicator didn’t just excite fans with a sense of what the future might hold for them: it actually inspired engineers to boldly go and create that future. Martin Cooper, the engineer working at Motorola credited with creating the world’s first mobile phone in 1973, said it was Kirk’s iconic prop that inspired him to create it.

The mobile phone has changed the way that the human race interacts. Mobile phones now dominate one-to-one and one-to-many communications; but still nothing can compare with the utter magic of putting yourself into the mindset of an intrepid 23rd century Starfleet landing party and flipping that golden antenna grille to answer an incoming call with the classic Communicator chirp, or speaking through the Communicator to your ship’s computer to ask it to dial and connect you with one of your friends.

For all those fans that dreamed, now at last the wait is over – owning is believing!

Frequently-asked questions.

Look down this list of frequently-asked questions to find answers that will help you if you are thinking of buying a Communicator and want to learn more about how it works.

No, the Communicator is a Bluetooth enabled handset. This means that the Communicator can wirelessly send and receive audio to and from a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone (or Bluetooth enabled music player) within a range of about five metres. Therefore, in order to use the Communicator to talk to other people, you will need a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone with which the Communicator will have to be paired and connected.

Yes, provided you have a Bluetooth enabled mobile phone and the Communicator is paired with it, within range and connected to it.

When a call comes in, the Communicator will play the hailing beep and flipping open the antenna grille will answer the call.

The Communicator does not have a numeric keypad or graphical display, so calls may only be initiated via the Communicator if it is paired with and connected to a mobile phone that supports voice dialing from a hands-free Bluetooth headset, or by using the ‘last number redial’ function (see below).

To make a call:

Single click the right button to initiate voice dialing.

Once voice dialing is initiated the Communicator will play speech prompts and confirmation tones from your mobile through the Communicator’s speaker and your mobile phone will use the Communicator’s microphone.

For some phones, an internet connection is required for voice dialing.

IMPORTANT: Please check your mobile phone’s user manual to find out if your mobile phone supports voice dialing from a Bluetooth headset, and best way to activate and use it. There are some mobile phones that can only use voice dialing if a key is pressed on the mobile phone to initiate voice dialing. You will not be able to use a phone like this for voice dialing from the Communicator. Also, identical mobile phones may handle remote voice dialing differently depending on what version of operating system software they currently have installed.

Last number redial

Press and hold the right button for last number redial. This can be useful where your mobile phone doesn’t support remote voice dialing, but you would still like to make a call from your Communicator.

What batteries does the Communicator use?

The Communicator has a built-in rechargeable lithium polymer power cell that is recharged via the USB cable supplied with the Communicator. (Any good quality USB to micro-USB cable may also be used). The Communicator handset is charged by placing it on the charging base and held in place by magnetic catches.

Is the Communicator a “screen-accurate” replica?

For most users the answer is a definite “Yes!”. We have spent thousands of hours and taken great care to make this Communicator replica as accurate as possible to the last known screen-used hero prop that Shatner and Nimoy used in the original series of Star Trek. In order to make it so accurate we took high-resolution 3D structured light scans of the “Alpha” original hero prop. To complement the “Alpha” scans we took numerous photographs and measurements, 3D laser scanned the “Epsilon” static screen-used prop, and took castings from (and weighed the components of) the “Zeta” static prop. We also made use of HeroComm.com’s extensive access to samples of authentic original materials, which were kindly loaned to us to make sure that our Communicator not only followed the data of the original accurately, but also captured the nuances of the original prop’s intention.

However, in order to make the Communicator manufacturable and more affordable, and to iron out some of the original’s inconsistencies, we have had to make some slight changes, and as such, this replica may be considered to be an idealised version of the original hero prop.

The original hero prop was made from a range of different materials including thermoformed Kydex sheet material, brass, and aluminium. In order to keep the cost as reasonable as possible we have used the nearest equivalent material that is suitable for modern manufacturing methods. Where metal was used in the construction of the hero prop, we have used metal in the Communicator replica.

The Main Housing

The hero prop’s main housing was made by thermoforming a sheet of Kydex material over a specially shaped tool. The Kydex had a particular pattern designed to replicate a pigskin texture. Due to the process, the texture stretched slightly at the sides, where the sheet was drawn down over the steeper draft angles of the housing. Our Communicator could not be made using thermoforming due to the need for internal fixings, so as a result our replica’s housing is made from injection-moulded ABS. However, the Kydex pattern was carefully reproduced using an advanced 3D laser etching process to create the pattern on the surface of the mould tool. One of the benefits of using this process is that we were able to measure the distortion of the original sheet material and recreate it on the texture of the injection-moulded part.

The Antenna Grille

The hero prop’s antenna grille was made by forming a sheet of perforated brass to give it its distinctive rounded-corner box shape. This was then soldered onto a brass wire that was glued into the turned brass hinge axle. For our Communicator for the purposes of robustness we have used steel for the grille and the supporting wire and coated it in a gold metallic finish. The hinge axle is die cast zinc.

The Mid-Plate

The hero prop’s mid-plate was a simple shape cut out of a sheet of aluminium. While our Communicator’s mid-plate looks identical on the outside, inside the Communicator it has a complex design that is a structural element, providing a fixing for many internal parts and a strong hinge stop for the antenna grille. As a result our Communicator’s mid-plate is manufactured in die-cast zinc, causing the overall weight of our replica to be around 27 grams heavier than the screen-used “Alpha” hero prop.

The Moiré Bezel

In the hero prop, where aluminium was used for the bezel, we have copied this exactly using CNC-machined aerospace-grade aluminium. On the “Alpha” hero prop, the bezel was mounted not quite centrally onto the top of the housing – we have corrected this imperfection for our product.

The hero prop’s jewels were Swarovski jewels mounted on the upturned ends of vacuum metallised slot car wheel hubs. The left and right jewels were sputter coated in gold to give them an iridescent AB (Aurora Borealis) look. The hero prop jewels did not light up and were prone to falling off. Our Communicator’s jewels do light up and need to be fixed permanently in place. The replica jewels are injection moulded – with facets underneath to catch the light. The left and right jewels are also sputter coated in a gold layer to give them that authentic iridescent AB (Aurora Borealis) appearance. Light pipes connect the jewels to LEDs inside the main housing, and chromium-plated injection-moulded mounts house and fix the jewels permanently in position. In the “Alpha” prop, the jewels were not evenly spaced across the housing – this was not an intentional aspect of the design so we have corrected the spacing for our product.

The Buttons

The hero prop had vacuum-metallised slot car wheel hubs as buttons. The original hubs were injection moulded in yellow plastic that was coated in a very thin layer of shiny metal. As a result it wore off during handling, revealing the plastic underneath. Our Communicator uses specially moulded buttons that are more heavily plated (with true chrome electroplating) and will be much less prone to surface wear.

Moiré winder

The “Alpha” hero prop’s moiré pattern rotated, turned by a pocket watch mechanism inside the prop. This was wound up through a brass tube that poked out of the main housing at the front under the mid-plate. After careful consideration, we decided that this aspect of the hero prop was not intended to be shown on screen and as a result was removed from our design. To make room inside the Communicator for the Bluetooth wireless components battery and speaker, the moiré screen is rotated by a miniature stepper motor.

Yes. The Communicator is supplied with with a USB charging cable, but any good quality micro-USB cable may be used to power the charging stand and thus charge up the Communicator.

Look down this list of frequently-asked questions to find answers that will help you if you are thinking of buying a Communicator and want to learn more about how it works.

Star Trek Communicators: From Science Fiction to Modern Reality

When the original Star Trek series premiered in 1966, it ventured where no show had gone before, both in terms of storytelling and futuristic innovation. Among the show's many iconic props, the communicator stands out as a visionary device that anticipated the future of technology.

Sexy Star Trek Cosplay: Communicators

The communicator was an essential piece of equipment for the Star Trek crew. It was primarily used for voice transmissions between landing parties and their starship, the USS Enterprise. It operated over vast distances, even from a planet's surface to the Enterprise in orbit. The device also had a locator function, allowing the ship to pinpoint the exact location of a crew member, which was especially useful during rescue missions.

In an era where state-of-the-art rotary phones and clunky communication equipment were connected via copper wire, the idea of small portable, wireless devices was revolutionary.

But, as it turned out, the very concept of the Star Trek communicator was so compelling that it inspired an entire generation of scientists and inventors to work on making it a reality. In fact, the father of the original cellular phone, Martin Cooper, credited Star Trek as the inspiration for his groundbreaking invention.

The legacy of the communicator is a testament to the influence of the art and imagination of Star Trek on real life. It reminds us that what appears as pure fiction today could possibly be a blueprint for the technology of tomorrow. As we tap our screens and speak voice commands into our modern devices, let's remember and appreciate the imaginative spark that started it all, a prop in a beloved Star Trek series.

Yes the classic communicator is a great design and also inspiration for some of the first flip phones.

Hopefully in the next 10 years the first true hypospray will be in use, there are already larger prototypes being developed. I wish you well and live long and prosper Gigi.

Did Star Trek Communicators Inspire the Invention of the Cell Phone?

Batman ’89 Introduces a Reimagined Classic Villain

Death of a pop star creator violet karim discusses her hit webtoon series & debut novel, the prison worlds in the vampire diaries, explained.

TV URBAN LEGEND : The communicators on Star Trek inspired the creation of the handheld cell phone.

The late, great Leonard Nimoy often joked at Star Trek conventions about how, well "flip phones" first became a big deal in the world of cell phones, Nimoy obviously eventually got one himself and he later recalled , "You know, when I first got this thing, I didn't even connect the dots. I was sitting at a stoplight one day and all these people were pointing and laughing, and I realized the great irony of it all."

What Nimoy, of course, was referring to is the fact that the communicators the the members of the Starship Enterprise used on the original Star Trek series look pretty much exactly like handheld "flip phone" cell phones decades later...

Therefore, the communicators on Star Trek have long been noted as being the inspiration for the hand held cell phone, which was first invented in the early 1970s by Martin Cooper at Motorola, although obviously the first actual hand held cell phone was gigantic (here is Cooper holding one of the early models in a photo from a while back)...

In fact, Cooper even appeared in a documentary called How William Shatner Changed the World where he noted the inspiration...

However, in a 2015 interview, Cooper explained the truth...

Cooper explained a couple of things. First off, he noted that he had been working at Motorola for years before Star Trek came out and they had been thinking about hand held cell phones for many years before Star Trek came out. In fact, in 1967, just a year after Star Trek debuted, they released a hand held portable radio system for police department use that was sort of like a cell phone. Obviously, that project started before 1966, ya know?

Cooper said that he was just so overwhelmed by the movie that he conceded to something that he did not actually believe to be true. He also noted that, if he HAD to pick a piece of pop culture that inspired the idea, it would instead be Dick Tracy's famous wrist watch communicator...

Either way, Cooper's main message is that he was working on the technology well before Star Trek, so whether Dick Tracy should get the credit or not, it wasn't Star Trek that inspired it.

I think the fact that Motorola HAD been working on the technology since the late 1950s does suggest that Cooper is believable here, so I'm going with the legend as...

STATUS : False

Thanks to Martin Cooper for the information!

[REVIEW] Bluetooth Star Trek Communicator Is A Trekkie’s Dream Come True

star trek communications

After two years of development, The Wand Company has released the first fully functional Star Trek Bluetooth Communicator, based on the iconic device used by Captain Kirk in The Original Series .

The Wand Company has previously developed several museum quality TV and movie prop recreations, including a Star Trek phaser that doubles as a TV remote and a selection of highly-detailed Doctor Who Sonic Screwdrivers.

Immediately after taking it out of the box, you realize this thing is the real deal. It looks and feels premium. It truly doubles as both a museum-quality prop and a functional way of communication.

Star Trek Bluetooth Communicator

Created from a 3D laser scan of the original prop used on the show, the device is made of die-cast zinc, CNC machined aluminum, back-lit iridescent coated jewels, a spinning moiré winder and it comes with a built-in lithium polymer battery.

Star Trek Bluetooth Communicator

I setup the communicator up in minutes. It quickly paired with my iPhone 6 and I was good to go.

The first thing I did was scan through some of the pre-recorded messages from crew members of the Enterprise by tapping the right button up, down, left and right. Some of those messages include Sulu answering “Yes, Captain?” Spock saying “Enterprise, Spock here.” Bones responding with “McCoy here.” and of course Montgomery Scott saying “Scotty here, Captain.” in that accent that still warms my heart. The left button powers up and powers down the device. Tapping the left button twice triggers a message from Uhura saying “Captain Kirk, message from Starfleet Command, top priority.”

Next up, I tested out the voice commands. “Read me my text messages” I said after tapping the right button once. Then, through the speaker, the communicator started reading the latest text from my wife. Pretty cool.

Star Trek Bluetooth Communicator

So what’s in the box?

Inside the cardboard packaging, you’ll find the hard plastic case lined with moulded foam, the communicator itself, a charging cradle and base with the words “U.S.S. Enterprise Standard Issue Communicator” imprinted on the foot, a USB charging cable and a pleather carrying case.

If I had to make one gripe, it would be the volume of the speaker. It seems a little too quiet for use outside your quarters.

Star Trek Bluetooth Communicator

Would I use this to make calls on a regular basis? No, probably not — but let’s be honest, that’s not why Trekkies will want this. The cool factor is off-the-charts. This is the device I’ve been dreaming about for the last few decades. There are plenty of decent prop replicas out there but nothing that matches the quality, craftsmanship and eye for detail and design as The Wand Company’s Bluetooth Communicator.

The Star Trek Bluetooth Communicator sells for $150 and is available now at ThinkGeek .

Holding a real Star Trek Communicator makes you feel like you're in Starfleet

Who wouldn't want to feel just a little bit like Kirk or Mr. Spock? Here at Comic-Con 2015, the Wand Company is showing off a prototype of its upcoming Star Trek TOS Bluetooth Communicator , a working replica of the communicator Federation officers used on The Original Series. In truth, it's a glorified Bluetooth speaker. But holding makes you feel a little bit like you're on an away mission.

The little device was actually designed using one of the original props from Star Trek , and is composed of a combination of pressed metal, aluminum, and textured plastic. Without having actually lived through the 1960s, I thought it felt authentic — weighty and purposeful for people in Starfleet. The grill flips opens with the actual sound effects from the show, and the speaker and transceiver make it look truly like a 23rd century artifact.

Star Trek TOS Communicator

Using the device involves just pairing it to your smartphone. We tested it using an older iPhone, so tapping one of the bottom-most buttons activated voice control, from which you can simply say the contact you want to reach via the Communicator's receiver. Calls came in loud and clear, so it works pretty well for a prototype.

The Wand Company partnered with ThinkGeek to make the Communicator available to the public by early next year. Fans can preorder it right now for $149.99 .

Star Trek: What Does A Communications Officer Actually Do?

lieutenant Uhura speaking to the captain

A starship is a complex beacon of exploration — a tool used to send members of Starfleet to the farthest reaches of space. It is meant to take us to where no man has ever gone before. With such an ambitious undertaking, a very long list of specialized crew members must be needed. The communications officer is one of the most important and maybe most often overlooked. As hinted by the title, this person is primarily tasked with handling all communications to and from the ship, making them one of the most vital crew members aboard.

Everything from visual communications to the bridge and the captain to distress calls, hails, text, and other forms of contact are filtered through this single point on the ship. Not only does the communications officer need to be adept at operating a long list of exceedingly complicated communications equipment, but they also need to be fluent, or at least passable, in as many languages as possible. Of course, speaking the language isn't enough if they have to deal with text communications, as well as audio and visual. They would theoretically need to be able to speak it as well.

Sure, the ship's captain has to make all the most challenging decisions that can be the difference between life and death. Engineering is responsible for keeping the ship in the air. Security's job is to keep everyone safe and sound and deal with any intruders on the ship. And medical is there to ensure that if anyone is not safe and sound, they get that way soon. All are essential jobs, but if the ship can't communicate with Mission Control, the crew is lost in the vastness of space.

Famous communications officers

Perhaps the most famous and well-known of the many communications officers we have seen over the breadth of the "Star Trek" franchise is Lieutenant Nyota Uhura. Played by the late Nichelle Nichols in the original series, Uhura was one of the core members of the crew that introduced fans to the Starship Enterprise and the likes of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelly), Hikaru Sulu (George Takei), Scotty (James Doohan), and Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig). Uhura, along with the rest, were reintroduced in the 2009 reboot, "Star Trek," which reimagined their destinies. This time, Uhura was played by Zoe Saldana ("Avatar," "Guardians of the Galaxy").

Another big name that has sat in the communications officer chair is Ensign Hoshi Sato. What makes her vitally crucial to the history of the position and Starfleet, in general, is that she was one of the first. She served aboard the Enterprise NX-01 under Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula). The ship greatly expanded Starfleet's presence in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants and made first contact with many species. The ship and its crew, along with Sato, are also credited with saving Earth from the Xindi and setting the stage for the United Federation of Planets. Sato was instrumental enough that Uhura wrote papers about her work and her exploits while a cadet in the Starfleet Academy.

The evolution of the position

Like all industries, technology threatened to hamper the number of jobs available for communications officers. The universal translator was present all the way back when Ensign Hoshi Sato was working the chair, but it was in its infancy, and she was still needed to translate most communications. However, by the time Ronald A. Bryce (Ronnie Rowe Jr.) was sitting in the chair in "Star Trek: Discovery," the universal translator had been built into most ships and translated thousands of languages. Of course, there is always a chance that they malfunction, ensuring that people like Bryce are always needed.

Communications officers like Uhura, Soto, and Bryce are some of the most integral crewmembers of the ships, serving as a bridge to the outside world. The United States Navy has a similar position known as the radioman. In the days of World War II, these talented soldiers were responsible for filtering communications ashore, on ships, and on submarines. They needed to be proficient in all radio frequencies, the gear to monitor them, and the languages being transmitted, like English, Russian, German, Japanese, and even Morse Code. The communications officers in Starfleet seem to be callbacks to these brave and brilliant soldiers as they take the same job into the great unknown, navigating languages across the galaxy, both known and unknown.

Ancient Rome Drama Set In The World Of Gladiators Gets Rotten Tomatoes Score Ahead Of Streaming Debut

Only murders in the building season 4 return chances get disappointing update from og star, the acolyte's surprise cameo fixes a 25-year-old phantom menace problem.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 7 - "Those Old Scientists"

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode "Those Old Scientists" renews the debate between the 23rd-century communicator flip-phone and the 24th-century combadge.
  • The combadge offers convenience and additional functions like a universal translator, making it more practical for fast-paced Starfleet environments.
  • Starfleet officers of the 24th century appreciate 23rd-century technology for nostalgic reasons, just like people today enjoy vintage technology.

One of the most useful pieces of technology in the Star Trek universe is the communicator or combadge, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks renewed the debate about which version of the iconic device is better. Following the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew aboard the USS Enterprise, Strange New Worlds takes place about 120 years before Lower Decks in the Star Trek timeline. 24th century technology has seen plenty of advancements over the gear seen in the 23rd century, but is it better?

In Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 7, "Those Old Scientists," Ensigns Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) from Star Trek: Lower Decks travel back in time and encounter Captain Pike and his Enterprise crew. Though they do their best to avoid altering the timeline, Boimler in particular cannot help but get excited about meeting his heroes and seeing 23rd-century technology in person. When it comes to communication devices, even Pike gets a little defensive about the 23rd-century flip-phone-like communicator.

Strange New Worlds Renews Star Trek’s Communicator Vs. Combadge Debate

Nearly every Star Trek series has done at least one time-travel story, and the characters often make comments about the technology of the time period they are visiting. "Those Old Scientists" shows Captain Pike and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) examining Boimler's combadge and commenting that they prefer their flip-phone communicators. While everyone seems to be in agreement that the flip-phone version of the communicator is the most satisfying to use, it's not exactly the most practical. If Starfleet officers find themselves in a dangerous situation, they may not have a free hand to grab their communicator and flip it open.

Related: 11 Star Trek Timeline Violations In Strange New Worlds Crossover

Star Trek officers often need to communicate with one another quickly, and the combadge offers a more convenient way to reach another officer. Quickly tapping their badge is faster than flipping open the communicator, and the combadge attached to their uniform reduces the amount of technology officers have to carry. The combadges of the 24th century had other uses beyond just communication, and acted as a universal translator and a means of identification. While the old-school communicators are fun and nostalgic, the updated combadge offers a more convenient way for officers to communicate with one another in the fast-paced environment of Starfleet.

Why Star Trek’s 24th Century Still Likes 23rd-Century Tech

Ensign Boimler was not the first Starfleet officer from the future to show their appreciation for outdated technology. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's "Trials and Tribble-ations," Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) appreciates the "classic" design of the 23rd-century tricorder. Boimler, too, excitedly asks Dr. M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun) if he can hold his tricorder, saying that "they never improved on these." Of course, Boimler then goes on to list the ways the technology has improved, but still, he clearly appreciates the old-school designs of the 23rd century, even if the o.g. tricorder may have a tendency to explode.

Starfleet officers of the 24th century likely love 23rd-century technology for the same reason that people today love technology from the past. Whether or not someone grew up with the older version of the technology, there is a sense of nostalgia associated with it. People today still enjoy typewriters and record players and flip-phones just like the Starfleet officers of the 24th century like the 23rd-century communicators and tricorders. With "Those Old Scientists," Star Trek: Strange New Worlds not only reignited the debate between communicators and combadges, but also continued the tradition of Starfleet officers from the future geeking out over the technology of the past.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 streams Thursdays on Paramount+.

The communications station or communications console was a console on the bridge of some Starfleet and other starships dedicated to managing all external transmissions . In the 22nd and 23rd centuries , the communications officer was a senior staff position. ( Star Trek: Enterprise ; Star Trek: The Original Series )

In 2266 , wishing that someone would talk to her about something else, Nyota Uhura complained that she was "beginning to feel too much a part of that communications console" after Spock made mention of an error she had made in her last subspace log . ( TOS : " The Man Trap ")

In 2267 , James T. Kirk was unable to contact anyone but the surface of Omicron Ceti III , as Uhura had sabotaged the communications station. Later, after the Omicron spores ' influence on Spock had ceased, Kirk asked if he could make a subsonic transmitter and hook it up to the communications station so it could be broadcast through the crew 's communicators. ( TOS : " This Side of Paradise ")

Kirk (Paul Wesley) sits at a Enterprise bar leaning against his hand looking dejected

[ Ed. note: This post contains material from an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike against the AMPTP went into effect.]

In the closing scene of Thursday’s new episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , a group of Starfleet officers socialize in the mess hall of the USS Enterprise, unpacking the events of their latest adventure. In the course of a relatively uneventful conversation, Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) takes a moment to introduce her new friend, Lieutenant Commander James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), to her shipmate Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck). It’s an entirely casual encounter, far from the monumental event that one might imagine from the first meeting of two people with a lifelong friendship ahead of them.

That, however, may be exactly the point. Ever since these new interpretations of Kirk and Spock debuted on Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Discovery , respectively, they have been permitted to establish themselves as individual characters, complete people rather than components of some prophesied “one true pairing.” By denying Kirk and Spock the expected cosmic meet-cute, viewers can be treated to something far more satisfying: organic growth befitting a real, lasting relationship.

While the Star Trek canon has never previously specified how and when Kirk and Spock came to know each other, the idea of spinning their first encounter as a grand adventure has always been an easy sell. The notion has inspired two licensed novels ( Enterprise: The First Adventure by Vonda N. McIntyre in 1986 and Star Trek: Academy: Collision Course by William Shatner with Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens in 2007), but more notably became the centerpiece of the 2009 film reboot, set in its own alternate timeline. Here, the rebellious young Cadet Kirk (Chris Pine) is caught cheating at a Starfleet Academy exam, which puts him at odds with the exam’s designer, Commander Spock (Zachary Quinto).

The two immediately become adversaries, until this alternate Kirk has a chance encounter with the classic Spock (Leonard Nimoy). Kirk is baffled that any version of his rival would be so happy to see him, but Spock Prime assures him that the friendship between them will come to “define [them] both.” With that, Kirk’s attitude toward his own timeline’s Spock changes on a dime, granting their interactions an immediate gravity but robbing us the chance to actually see them become friends. We are told that their friendship is important, and we accept this because almost everyone watching already knows that Kirk and Spock are best friends.

Where 2009’s Star Trek frames Kirk and Spock’s early lives as a mere prelude to their shared destiny, the modern Trek series have never treated them as a matched set. To begin with, Spock was reintroduced as a foil to a totally different character: his foster sister, Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), on Star Trek: Discovery . We first meet Ethan Peck’s Spock in the midst of an emotional crisis, sporting a scruffy beard and a bad attitude. Spock’s story here is about the origins of his rejection of human feeling, here explained as a consequence of his fraught relationship with his human foster sister.

“My onboarding has been much longer,” says Peck, “and I’ve had a lot more time to develop my character than Paul has. I have the luxury of this very established inner world with Spock.”

Discovery ’s only allusion to Spock’s future comes in Michael’s final words of advice before she is propelled a millennium into the future, never to see him again: “There is a whole galaxy out there full of people who will reach for you. You have to let them. Find the person who seems farthest from you, and reach for them. Let them guide you.”

A bearded Spock (Ethan Peck) lying in a chair while Michael (Sonequa Martin-Green) talks to someone and looks concerned

At the time, this felt like it foreshadowed Spock’s future friendship with the all-too-human Kirk. However, after a season and a half of Strange New Worlds , it feels as if Spock has already let Michael’s words resonate in his daily life. He has a human mentor in Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), and is currently exploring a romantic relationship with Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), who’s even more of a rambunctious wild card than Kirk. We’ve now seen Spock wrestle with his emotions, deconstruct the human/Vulcan binary, and try his hand at starship command before sci-fi’s favorite Iowan even enters his life. He’s already a complete and compelling character in his own right, and his role on this series is distinct from the one Leonard Nimoy’s version performed on The Original Series .

Similarly, Strange New Worlds has deliberately kept distance between recurring guest star Jim Kirk and his future better half. Two of Paul Wesley’s four appearances on Strange New Worlds to date have been from parallel timelines in which he, pointedly, has never met Spock. His first appearance, the season 1 finale “A Quality of Mercy,” is designed to contrast an alternate Kirk against Captain Pike, not against Spock (though they do share a scene together). It’s an introduction to Kirk as an agitator, someone whose guiding star is instinct, versus Pike’s empathy. His next appearance explores him as a romantic foil to Lieutenant Commander La’an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong). This is Kirk the everyman, Kirk the charmer, the side of him that flirts and hustles chess. (This Kirk, too, has a brief meeting with an alternate Spock over a video conference, another light tease toward the idea of the two proper versions of them meeting up.)

“Ethan and I didn’t chemistry-read together,” reveals Wesley, “which is kind of surprising. I think [the writers] are just allowing it to grow naturally, and just trusting the process.”

Finally, in this week’s “Lost in Translation,” it’s Uhura, not Spock, with whom the “real” Kirk bonds aboard the Enterprise. It’s through Uhura that we finally get to know what makes Jim tick, as the ever-curious communicator coaxes out the earnest, selfless side of him that will one day make him a great captain. Their small misadventure together leads Uhura to introduce him to Spock in the ship’s mess hall, with no intent behind the gesture aside from basic politeness.

Kirk (Paul Wesley) sitting and talking to Pike (Anson Mount) in the captain’s quarters

“Paul and I have talked a lot about their first meeting,” says Peck, “and for Spock, Kirk is just another Starfleet officer.”

“I think a lot of times in life, we do things without thinking about them,” says Wesley. “I think a lot of times, our instincts draw us to people when we’re missing something that we think the other person can fulfill, but it’s super subconscious.”

While this quite incidental first meeting between Star Trek’s most famous duo might seem like a missed opportunity, the truth is that the narrative did not need to make Kirk and Spock’s handshake into an important event — we, the fans, were always going to do that. Profundity is baked into the very image, thanks to 55 years of real-life baggage. Instead, the storytellers behind Strange New Worlds have done us a far greater service — making Kirk and Spock interesting enough separately that connecting them feels like a piece of their journey, rather than the beginning or the end.

STARFLEET ACADEMY TRAILERS

  • Director, writers, & crew

" Star Trek: Discovery " has finally ended its groundbreaking run after five seasons to usher in the streaming age of Gene Roddenberry's baby, and the third outing of " Star Trek: Strange New Worlds " won't land until sometime in 2025, perhaps before the first " Star Trek " streaming film and its black-ops division arrives for " Section 31 ."

Keeping the creative energies burning, the next high-flying "Star Trek" project fueling up for a probable release in 2026 from the iconic sci-fi fantasy franchise will be "Starfleet Academy." This young adult-aimed series set in the San Francisco begins filming soon in Canada and fan anticipation is already ramping up to find out exactly what executive producer and showrunner Alex Kurtzman has planned for us Trekkies.

Before the bell rings, let's warp into everything we know about "Star Trek: Starfleet Academy" and its newest class of promising candidates that will someday join the Federation as part of its intrepid peacekeeping armada to reignite the spirit of intergalactic discovery. Take your seat and let's dive straight in!

STARFLEET ACADEMY RELEASE DATE

Cameras for "Starfleet Academy" are due to start rolling late this summer at Pinewood Studios Toronto for a planned six-month shoot. The production is destined to showcase the most enormous set ever created for any "Star Trek" show.

Its design will incorporate a central two-story academic atrium, an elaborate amphitheater, classrooms for the brightest astrophysics mind, a huge mess hall, and pedestrian walkway flanked by trees. After a normal 6-8 months of post-production, "Starfleet Academy" probably won't arrive on Paramount+ until 2026 sometime.

Paramount+ Essential (ads): $5.99 /mo Paramount+ with SHOWTIME (no ads): $11.99 /mo

When it does release, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will almost certainly be available to watch on Paramount+. You can also watch almost every other Star Trek show and movie on there too though, while you wait.

STARFLEET ACADEMY PLOT

"Starfleet Academy" takes place mainly in San Francisco of the 32nd century at the end of a period known as The Burn, when nearly all of the galaxy's precious supply of dilithium, a material which is required for warp drives, had been rendered inert.

In " Star Trek: Discovery" Season 3 , Michael Burnham and her crew swept in to aid in stopping the crystal crisis, heralding a new era of cosmic exploration. This end to the severe restrictions of faster-than-light space travel results in a fresh beginning for both the Federation and Starfleet.

This series will explore the academic incubator for this next generation of starship captains, commanders, pilots, navigators, science officers, and engineers in a higher education environment that will delve into themes of friendship, romance, peer pressure, rivalries and enlightenment as they strive to make the grade under the watchful guidance of their professors and instructors.

A woman in a black space suit stares into the flames

"My thinking was, if we set "Starfleet Academy" in the halcyon days of the Federation where everything was fine, it's not going to speak to what kids are going through right now," Kurtzman explained in a May 30, 2024 interview with the LA Times .

"It'll be a nice fantasy, but it's not really going to be authentic. What'll be authentic is to set it in the timeline where this is the first class back after over 100 years, and they are coming into a world that is only beginning to recover from a cataclysm — which was the Burn, as established on "Star Trek: Discovery," where the Federation was greatly diminished. So they’re the first who’ll inherit, who’ll re-inherit, the task of exploration as a primary goal, because there just wasn’t room for that during the Burn — everybody was playing defense. It's an incredibly optimistic show, an incredibly fun show; it's a very funny show, and it's a very emotional show. I think these kids, in different ways, are going to represent what a lot of kids are feeling now.”

STARFLEET ACADEMY SEASON 1 EPISODES

Starfleet Academy follows the same 10-episode format of other Paramount+ Star Trek series. Beyond that, we don't know much at this point as we're still very early in the show's development.

STARFLEET ACADEMY CAST

Since pre-production is still underway on "Starfleet Academy" there are numerous casting announcements popping up from time to time.

The most prominent of those picks is word that the Academy Award-winning actress Holly Hunter ("The Piano") will portray the "captain and chancellor" of "Starfleet Academy" who oversees the institution's faculty and class of bright-eyed hopefuls.

Recently, news broke that distinguished actor Paul Giamatti ("John Adams," "The Illusionist") has been signed in the ongoing role of the premiere season's big baddie, described as "a man with an ominous past connected to one of our cadets."

And just this week, Paramount+ announced that Kerrice Brooks ("My Old Ass"), Bella Shepard ("Wolf Pack") and George Hawkins ("Tell Me Everything") have joined the cast as newly recruited "Starfleet Academy" cadets.

STARFLEET ACADEMY DIRECTOR, WRITERS, AND CREW

Longtime "Star Trek" ringmaster Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau ("Nancy Drew") will act as executive producers and share showrunning duties for "Starfleet Academy." CBS Studios is in charge of production in collaboration with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment, while Paramount Global Content Distribution maintains the series' distribution.

Additional executive producers include Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber. Kurtzman is also signed on to direct the first two episodes, and Jonathan Frakes is rumored to direct as well. Gaia Violo wrote the series premiere episode.

Long-lost 'Star Trek' phaser and communicator props headed to auction

July 16 (UPI) -- A California auction house announced a pair of long-lost props from the original Star Trek series have been found after more than 50 years and are headed to auction.

Julien's Auctions, in partnership with Turner Classic Movies, announced the phaser and communicator will be auctioned as part of the co-branded event "Comic-Con Museum Presents: Julien's Auctions & TCM 2024 Spotlight Series."

The props were used by William Shatner on screen in his role as Capt. James T. Kirk.

Don Hillenbrand, a Star Trek prop expert, authenticated the items as the "hero" versions used on screen in multiple episodes of the series.

The props, made in 1966, were thought lost for more than 50 years before turning up in the collection of a recently-deceased man who worked in the Hollywood prop industry for many years. The items are now owned by the man's family and will be auctioned Nov. 9.

Review: The EXO-6 ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ 1:6 Geordi Figure Is A Sight To See

Yep the one thing I always associate with Star Trek is rampant microtransactions and violence

Star Trek has always had violence.

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise . Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before and shoot them in the face!

I mean, that is pretty much what they often do…

I belive it’s “continuing” and “no one.”

Sounds like you’re describing Orion. Or Ferenginar on a really bad day.

Now I’ve seen it all… and cannot un-see it!

No. No to all of that.

This is by far the dumbest thing related to star trek I have ever seen! And not in a “So dumb is funny” way. This is just awefull!

There was a World of Tanks promo that was similar a little while ago. Yes just as stupid

Nope, nothing will ever beat those horrible starship NFTs from a few years back.

I didn’t even know about those.*sigh*

What’s next, a Trek themed monster truck rally?

STOP GIVING THEM IDEAS!!!! :D

Monster Trek!

Yes please!

As long as it’s not canon, I’m in!

On a positive note, the top half of the key art (the portraits in front of the TMP-style rainbow) looks good, and got me excited for something new (until I realised what it was for haha).

OK I’m not a gamer and never played a Star Trek video game in my life. But I saw the comments and was confused why everything was so negative. So I clicked on the video….and WTF???? Is that a real thing??? Like why? Who would buy this?

I have never said this before, but I feel a bit shamed this it was even posted lol.

World of Warships players who are also Star Trek fans would buy this?

Wouldn’t it make more sense, though, to take the basic gameplay of WoW and set it in space with the actual starships from Star Trek?

“Make sense” is not really the point of this kind of promotional collaboration. Moving the action to space would entail an extensive redesign to the game software. What the developer did here (disclosure: I’m not a player myself, but judging from the trailer video and comments from players) is much simpler and cheaper: re-skin four existing ships and model a new “port” (i.e., water and landmasses to serve as a combat arena). Basically, WWII warships are cosplaying. (I mean, what’s the point of a navigational deflector on a wet-navy vessel? To shove aside fog and seabirds?)

Awful awful. I hope the devlopers check the comments of this article. Shameful

It’s so ridiculous I can’t help but love it.

I once heard that Gene Roddenberry did not like the new uniforms in Star Trek II because they looked too militaristic. Roddenberry would have absolutely detested this mash-up/ promotion thing. Extremely anti-Star Trek.

To quote the TNG bible he made.

“Starfield is not a military organisation it is science research and diplomatic body”

uniforms are “To be much less military looking than the recent Star Trek films since the 24th century centers on enhancing the quality of life”

But at the same time… the Dominion War. (And USS Defiant, a dedicated warship). The Klingon War. MACOs. It’s not like this is the first time Trek has dipped its toes in or had a very military tone or showed military ships. And Roddenberry may well have hated those, too. Just saying, it’s not like this is breaking that ground, just following in footsteps.

(But also, Roddenberry may have appreciated a Starfleet-styled aircraft carrier, considering his own WWII service.)

Okay, I need your help with a slightly off-topic issue, friends. The graphic for this game reads “Star Trek: The Next Generation x World of Warships…. what purpose does the “x” (Star Trek x Kid Cudi, Gozdilla x Kong) serve? I see this “x” thing everywhere and, being an old Herbert, have no idea what it means.

“Cooler” way of writing vs basically

many thanks.

Sometimes “X” means “versus” but more often it’s short for “crossover”. I think the usage originated in Asia (China, Japan and/or South Korea), where the mobile game industry often does promotional collaborations with TV shows, food brands and sports. (See: https://www.gamerefinery.com/the-most-unbelievable-collaboration-events-in-chinese-and-japanese-mobile-games/ ) Consider “Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross x Stranger Things” (2021) (a card battler) or “Sailor Moon x Moon Princess” (2023) (a slot-like game).

On a somewhat related note, are these what the vessels of the Federation Maritime Patrol look like?

Yes folks, it’s Star Trek Wars! The Imperial Federation of Planets. Starring Darth Picard and Jar Jar Riker. Featuring Lt. Deatha All the other non war story lines have been done so let’s just shot at each other in space.

Puts the stoo in stoo-pid! Absolutely what Trek is all about. LET’S BATTLE!!!!!

This is a colossal failure. $100 for a camo for a ship you will never be allowed to own in game
