The Origins of 11 Famous Star Trek Lines

CBS

Few franchises have had the cultural impact of the various Star Trek television series and movies, and nowhere is that more evident than in the snippets of dialogue that have become a part of the American vernacular—and in some cases, found their way abroad, too. Here are 11 of the most notable Star Trek catchphrases, as well as a little more information about their origins.

1. "Live Long and Prosper"

The Vulcan greeting and the finger-separating hand gesture that accompanies it first appeared in the second season of Star Trek: The Original Series , during an episode titled “Amok Time.” Spock himself (actor Leonard Nimoy) has made no secret of the fact that the gesture and phrase were his idea, and that he based them on Orthodox Jewish blessings he remembered from his childhood. In the Jewish blessing, the position of the fingers forms the Hebrew letter “Shin,” which represents the name “Shaddai” (Almighty God). Nimoy put his own spin on the traditional gesture by holding up just one hand (instead of both) and changing up the verbal blessing slightly.

2. "Highly Illogical..."

While Spock never shied away from questioning the logic of those around him—usually Kirk—it wasn't until the second season that he took things up a notch and deemed the actions of the native inhabitants of planet Omega IV “highly illogical” in the episode titled “The Omega Glory.” Previously, it had always just been “illogical” or, in rare cases, “most illogical,” but it took a pair of natives attacking Kirk in a jail cell for Spock to pair his trademark raised-eyebrow reaction with the term “highly illogical.” The phrase would then be repeated in several more episodes, as well as the subsequent films and J.J. Abrams' reboot of the franchise.

Bonus: “Highly Illogical” was also the name of Leonard Nimoy's 1993 music album featuring several songs he recorded in the 1960s (including “The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins”) as well as a few new tunes.

3. "Beam Me Up, Scotty"

One of the most interesting aspects of this phrase—a request directed at Chief Engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott for transport back to the USS Enterprise—is that it was never actually uttered in any of the Star Trek television series or movies. More often than not, the command was akin to “Three to beam up” or more directly, “Beam them up,” with the closest approximation being “Beam us up, Scotty” in a few episodes of the Star Trek animated series. However, William Shatner did say this line while reading the audio version of his novel Star Trek: The Ashes of Eden .

4. "I'm A Doctor, Not A..."

Everyone knows that Dr. Leonard McCoy is not an engineer, a coal miner, or an escalator, but that never stopped him from reminding his fellow crew members. The first time DeForest Kelley uttered his famous catchphrase as we know it was in a first-season episode titled “The Devil in the Dark.” In that episode, McCoy saw fit to let Kirk know that he was a doctor, not a brick-layer. It's worth noting that an earlier episode, “The Corbomite Maneuver," had him asking Capt. Kirk, “What am I, a doctor or a moon-shuttle conductor?” but it wasn't until much later in the season that we got the full line that would later be heard in just about every subsequent series, as well as the Star Trek films. The line even made it into J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot, with Karl Urban (as McCoy) exclaiming, “I'm a doctor, not a physicist!”

5. "Make It So"

Captain Jean-Luc Picard's signature line was a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation from the very start, with actor Patrick Stewart uttering what would become his character's most memorable catchphrase in the pilot episode, “Encounter at Farpoint.” The episode was written by Gene Roddenberry himself, so it's likely that he wrote the line for Picard, though the phrase has been in use for quite a while in military circles as a way to tell someone to proceed with a command.

6. "To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before..."

The infinitive-splitting opening narration for each episode of Star Trek: The Original Series (with the exception of the pilot episodes) was famously recited by William Shatner, but the actual origins of the line are uncertain at best. Some reports suggest that it was inspired by a 1958 White House press booklet promoting the space program, though some have speculated that it came from a statement made by explorer James Cook following an expedition to Newfoundland. Writer Samuel Peeples, who authored the pilot episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” is often credited with the decision to make the phrase such a significant part of the series. The line was eventually repeated—with a few minor tweaks—in each iteration of the series and films.

7. "Khaaannnn!"

Possibly the most meme-friendly line of dialogue ever to come out of the Star Trek universe, this scream of rage originated in (no surprise here) Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . Left marooned on a dead planet by the evil villain Khan then taunted about his predicament, Kirk let loose with a primal roar—and the rest was viral-video history.

8. "I'm Givin' Her All She's Got, Captain!"

Much like “Beam me up, Scotty,” this famous catchphrase often associated with USS Enterprise Chief Engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in Star Trek: The Original Series was never said in this exact form by actor James Doohan in the series or subsequent films. The closest approximation is a line in the second-season episode “The Changeling,” when Kirk asks Scotty to divert more power to the ship's shields. Scotty responds with, “Giving them all we got.” However, Doohan did utter every word of the famous line as part of a cameo in 1993's Loaded Weapon , in which he turns up as a panicky police officer trying to fix a coffee machine. Similarly, Simon Pegg used the same line “I'm givin' her all she's got, Captain!” in 2009's Star Trek reboot, in which he plays a young Montgomery Scott.

9. "Nuclear Wessels"

Russian crew member Pavel Andreievich Chekov's inability to pronounce the letter “V” became a recurring joke after the character was introduced in the second season of Star Trek: The Original Series as the ship's navigator. While it made for some funny moments throughout the series and subsequent movies, one of the most memorable pronunciation gaffes occurred during Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , when Chekov begins asking passers-by in 1980s San Francisco where he can find “nuclear wessels.” Even though Walter Koenig had been playing the character for almost 20 years before The Voyage Home hit theaters, the two-word line soon became indelibly connected with his portrayal of the character.

10. "Resistance Is Futile"

This famous line was first uttered by robotic aliens The Borg in the epic third-season finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation , titled “Best of Both Worlds, Part 1.” Not only did the 1990 episode offer up one of the greatest cliffhangers in television history, but it also coined a phrase that would live forever in the nightmares of fans—mainly because it was recycled for use in countless other series and films down the road.

11. "Set Phasers To Stun"

It was established early on in Star Trek: The Original Series that the phasers used by the crew of USS Enterprise had a “stun” setting (as mentioned in “The Man Trap” episode), and both Kirk and Spock often found themselves instructing their crewmates to use the non-lethal capabilities of their standard-issue weapons. However, it wasn't until the second season of Star Trek: The Animated Series that we first heard Kirk issue the command “Set phasers to stun.” The line eventually became an oft-repeated order in subsequent series, turning up in both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Next Generation , as well as many of the movies (including 2009's reboot).

Roddenberry was allegedly inspired by Gulliver's Travels and a TV series called Wagon Train to create Star Trek.  Each episode of the series is built as an incredible adventure, but also as a morality tale, considering that the episodes depict cultural realities and conflicts like war and peace, sexism, human rights, religion, economics, loyalty, racism and technology.

Mom Asks Woman To Give Up Her First-Class Seat For Her Child - People Are Applauding Her Response

Woman Refuses to Give Her First Class Seat to Mom and Child

Flying first-class is a luxury most of us will never get to experience. So when a woman's boyfriend surprised her with a ticket on a long-haul flight she was thrilled.

Legroom for days, next-level service, snuggling under a complimentary duvet with a down pillow on your LIE-FLAT seat, AND sipping champagne? Seriously, what's not to love?

Needless to say, it didn't disappoint. What did disappoint, however, was a mother and plane staff asking the woman to switch seats with a child in ECONOMY shortly before take-off. She politely declined. But now she's wondering, AITAH? The internet has thoughts.

Woman Takes To Reddit After Refusing to Give Up Seat to a Child

In a post on Reddit's popular AITAH (am I the a--hole) forum, the user, 21, shared that her boyfriend, 27, had been "doing well in his career" and surprised her with first-class tickets on two connecting 12-hour flights.

It was a dream come true for the woman who "grew up lower middle class" and "had never ever flown higher than the cheapest seats on a plane before."

However, her dream quickly turned into a nightmare when a flight attendant put her in the highly awkward position of requesting she switch to economy class so a mother and child could sit together.

"About 20 minutes before takeoff, a flight attendant approached me with a woman and a young kid (maybe around 6 years old)," the Redditor wrote.

"The woman explained that she had booked a first-class ticket for herself and her son, but due to a booking error, he ended up in economy. She asked if I would be willing to switch seats with her son so he could experience first class as well."

She "politely declined" the request explaining that it was a gift from her boyfriend and her first time in first class and she really wanted to experience it.

"The woman seemed pretty upset and tried to argue that her son would appreciate it more than me, and that it was unfair because I didn't even pay for the ticket myself," she wrote, adding, "The flight attendant seemed to be on the woman's side, subtly implying that I should consider being more understanding."

After an uncomfortable minute or so, the woman's boyfriend came to her defense, telling the flight attendant that "he had bought the tickets, that he was a platinum member of the airline, and that he tends to book all of his company's business trip flights with the airline, and if she booted me to the economy, he would take his business elsewhere."

Eventually, the mother and son "went back to business class." But it was too late, the magic was lost. The Redditor claimed that for the duration of the flight, she could "feel the flight attendant glaring at me every time she passed by."

Response To The Reddit Post

Despite her boyfriend's reassurance that she "did nothing wrong" and "it was disrespectful for her to even ask" for her seat in the first place, the woman still couldn't shake it off.

It didn't help that some of her friends questioned her choice "saying that it would have been the kind thing to do." Hence, going to the masses for popular opinion. The consensus was overwhelmingly in her favor.

" Nta. The mom can sit in the back and her kid can sit upfront. Problem solved. No one should ever ever be allowed to ask to switch seats."

"NTA?? I have no idea why they were so adamant about you moving, it was not YOUR fault that they had a BOOKING ERROR. Your boyfriend paid for that service for you to enjoy and you have every right to. That woman did not pay for your seat so if she has an issue, she needs to take it up to the airline instead of trying to guilt trip you into giving up your seat for a kid that is not your issue."

"NTA...I don't believe for one second there was a booking error. She was trying to scam a free 1st class flight. Also if it was so important for her kid to experience 1st class, she could switch seats with him."

"NTA. The flight attendant had no right insisting that you should switch seats if you don’t want to. They could have picked anyone else in first class to request a switch for, but they chose you. Why? Because you’re young and could be intimidated into doing it? Clearly not because you were traveling alone because you weren’t. I would have told them no too. That’s a good boyfriend you have there."

And this brings up an interesting point. According to the OP (original poster), there were eight seats in first class. Besides the woman and her boyfriend, there were "three guys in suits," "an older, married couple," and the mother. So why was the young woman targeted?

The Importance of Advocating For Yourself

If there was, in fact, a booking error it should have been the airline's responsibility to handle it. It should not have been placed on a fellow passenger to rectify the situation and she shouldn't have been made to feel guilty about saying no.

No one likes being put in the position of the "bad guy." But as popular opinion proves, standing up for yourself, especially in a situation where you have rightfully earned a privilege doesn't make you a bad guy. It makes you someone who understands that you are entitled to what you paid for and personal boundaries are a good thing.

The woman's experience serves as a good reminder that while kindness and empathy are vital, so too are personal rights.

Miss Kansas Publicly Calls Out Her Abuser In The Audience

25-year-old Alexis Smith was officially crowned Miss Kansas earlier this month. She beat out 25 contestants to become the third Black woman to ever win the title.

And while these accomplishments are to be admired, it's her empowering message to her abusive ex who had the gall to sit in the audience that makes her the real winner.

Beauty Pageant Participant Takes Down Her Abuser In Epic On-Stage Declaration

As a victim of domestic abuse, Alexis knows first-hand the devastating impact it can have on someone's life. Too often shrouded in secrecy and shame, the pageant contestant decided to use her platform to bring awareness to domestic violence.

Dubbing it her "Reclaimed Respect Initiative," she spoke about it during the interview phase of the competition.

It didn't go down as she expected.

Because as it turns out, the literal face of her trauma was sitting in the audience, obviously trying to intimidate her and cow her into silence.

But instead of letting her abusive ex silence her, she spoke out. And in doing so, reclaimed her voice and power in an incredible display of courage that has the world applauding.

"My vision as the next Miss Kansas is to eliminate unhealthy and abusive relationships," Smith boldly declared.

"Matter of fact, some of you out in this audience saw me very emotional because my abuser is here today, but that's not going to stop me from being on this Miss Kansas stage and from representing as the next Miss Kansas because I and my community deserve healthy relationships."

Not only did the cardiothoracic ICU nurse NOT let it stop her, but she WON! And she will be representing the sunflower state at next year's Miss America pageant.

Literal QUEEN.

Her Empowering Message Goes Viral

@lexlex_smith Respect Reclaimed is about reclaiming your power and standing firmly in it. On the night of Miss Kansas, my journey took an unexpected turn when someone I have been healing from tried to disrupt my peace. Instead of falling into silence, I chose to live out my vision for a better world. I took back my power—not just for myself, but for my dreams and everyone watching and listening. This isn't about shunning others; it's about turning our pain into purpose and channeling it in a way that unifies and uplifts. I'm ready to use my story, tools, and resources to end unhealthy relationships in all forms. My voice and advocacy will empower everyone to reclaim their own power in their own unique way. I might be small in stature, but I stand tall in strength, purpose, and power with hopes of inspiring others to do the same. #fyp #abuse #miss #misskansas #missamerica #pageant #awareness #me #relationship #respect #tiktok

Smith shared a video clip of her message across her social media channels where it has gone viral, gaining widespread support.

"On the night of Miss Kansas, my journey took an unexpected turn when someone I have been healing from tried to disrupt my peace," Smith wrote in the caption.

"Instead of falling into silence, I chose to live out my vision for a better world. I took back my power — not just for myself, but for my dreams and everyone watching and listening."

And while she didn't directly name her abuser, she did provide some insight into who it is in an interview with CBS affiliate, KSNW .

“My family, every single woman in my family, was impacted by domestic violence,” she said. “At the age of 14, I got in my first relationship, but it was also an abusive relationship that I was in until about 2018, 2019."

"It’s something that I’m still experiencing and dealing with today.”

Her journey with domestic violence has run the full gamut; from being a bystander, a victim, a survivor, and now an advocate who is "ready to use my story, tools, and resources to end unhealthy relationships in all forms."

"This isn't about shunning others; it's about turning our pain into purpose and channeling it in a way that unifies and uplifts," Smith continued. "I might be small in stature, but I stand tall in strength, purpose, and power with hopes of inspiring others to do the same."

She already is.

" As a survivor, this moved me. thank you for using your voice. you just gave strength to many you'll never meet 💜 ," wrote one commenter.

"YAS GIRL! As a fellow survivor, you are an inspiration and I’m so proud of you for using your voice and showing your strength," wrote another.

A third shared, "As a victim of domestic violence I applaud you for speaking out!! I watched this 10 times!! I'm still getting bullied by his parents even with a no contact order. I plan on helping women like us as well."

The Importance of Speaking Out Against Abuse

Domestic violence is shockingly prevalent. According to a report by the CDC , "about 41% of women and 26% of men experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime and reported a related impact."

Additionally, "over 61 million women and 53 million men have experienced psychological aggression by an intimate partner in their lifetime."

Speaking out against domestic abuse is a critical step in breaking the cycle of violence. By giving voice to their experiences, survivors not only reclaim their own power but also pave the way for other victims to stand up and do the same.

If you need help or need help supporting someone else, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or text START to 88788 or chat online at TheHotline.org.

Captain Picard About to "Engage" in Star Trek: The Next Generation

This Star Trek article contains spoilers for the ending of Discovery Season 3 .

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 may have taken place in a whole new future for our characters and for us, but it wasn’t afraid to call back to franchise history. One of the most delightful ways we saw this happen in Season 3 was in the discussion of the all important Star Trek captain catchphrase. In “Sanctuary,” Captain Saru and Tilly surreptitiously discuss “the other matter” of figuring out what he should say whenever it’s time to seem like a cool and in control Starfleet captain. This results in Saru hilariously trying to re-appropriate Captain Pike’s “Hit it,” followed by a fairly lukewarm reception of “Execute!”

The subject comes up again in the Discovery Season 3 finale when Michael Burnham takes the captain chair. Captain Burnham doesn’t seem to have the same level of existential crisis as Saru did figuring out what his captain catchphrase may be (either that or we just don’t get to see the workshop session she has with Tilly), landing on an all-new catchphrase for the episode’s final moments. Now that Burnham has just busted-out her own excellent tag line, it’s time to look best and worst Starfleet catchphrases. It’s warp time!

12. “Execute”

Saru tries this one out in “Sanctuary,” but Captain Kirk actually used “Execute” fairly well! In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Kirk says “execute” twice . The more famous version is when he says “Prepare to execute emergency landing plan…b,” which is just Kirk making shit up on the fly. But, in the same movie, he also, very slickly says “Mister Sulu…execute.” Which is some badass Captain Kirk action, even in a fairly underloved Trek movie.

11. “Get It Done”

Oh goody. Remember your favorite Captain of the USS Enterprise-D ; Edward Jellico? Played by RoboCop baddie Ronny Cox, Jellico liked to tell Riker and Troi to “Get It Done,” like that was something cool to say. In fairness, Jellico wasn’t a terrible Captain, and was partially responsible for Troi getting to wear a regular uniform for the rest of the series, so if he got one thing done , it was (arguably) getting Troi a little more respect.

10. “Take Us Out”

Can you think of one Starfleet order that elicited a standing ovation for no reason? Yep, it was in Star Trek Generations , when, surrounded by reporters, Kirk said “Take us out.” Everyone went wild and Chekov and Scotty made fun of Kirk when he sat down. The weird thing was, as a 12-year-old- in 1994, I actually kind of thought this might have been a legit catchphrase of Kirk’s, and was confused when I couldn’t find him saying it all the time in old TOS episodes. I mean, in “City on the Edge of Forever,” he does say “Let’s get the hell out of here,” but that hardly counts as a catchphrase. Sure, Kirk said variations of “Take us out of orbit,” or whatever in TOS , but come on.

9. “Just Do IT!”

No, this wasn’t a Star Trek/Nike crossover. Picard said this one time when he was really depressed. Weirdly, this one comes from Generations , too. Does that make Generations like a low-key workshop for new Star Trek catchphrases? Maybe.

8. “Go!”

This was Captain Lorca’s catchphrase in Star Trek: Discovery Season 1, and it mostly indicated the ship was about to use the Spore Drive. Interestingly, Saru did use “Go” in the Season 1 episode “Choose Your Pain,” the first time he was left in command of the Discovery . Is this really worse than “execute?”

7. “punch it”.

Remember when Star Trek ripped-off Han and Lando? In the first Star Trek reboot in 2009, that version of Captain Pike said “Punch it” twice . This was a clear Star Wars nod and, you know what? It worked.

6. “Warp me!” and “It’s Warp Time!”

In Star Trek: Lower Decks , Captain Freeman tries out the phrase “It’s warp time!” in the episode “Envoys.” Later, in a holographic simulation in “Crisis Point,” she says “Warp me!” This one isn’t bad, but considering Saru isn’t really using warp drive anymore, it’s suddenly…outdated!

5. “Hit It”

It’s weird that Anson Mount’s Captain Pike has only been around since 2019, and yet, “Hit It” has already become a huge part of the Trek fandom. Because Pike, Spock and Number One will all be in Strange New Worlds sometime in either 2021 or 2022, expect to be hearing “Hit It” a lot more in the coming years.

4. “Do It”

While Captain Sisko was never really given a catchphrase, his fellow late-’90s Star Trek star, Captain Janeway, did get one, kind of under the radar. Janeway says “Do it” in a very specific, almost angry way. When Janeway says “do it,” you kind of want to comply right away, but also, kind of figure out what you did wrong. Maybe she needs coffee?

3. “Let’s Fly!”

At the end of “That Hope Is You, Part 2,” Burnham busts-out her personal Starfleet captain catchphrase. Some fans have pointed out that in a sense, Burnham could be riffing on Captain Lorca in Discovery Season 1, when he said “We’re creating a new way to fly,” in reference to the Spore Drive. But, the stranger and extra-fictional deep-cut might have to do those killer Discovery Season 2 trailers that were set to the Lenny Kravitz rock classic, “Fly Away.” Yeah, remember that? I’m not saying “Fly Away” is an official anthem of Discovery , but I’m also not not saying that.

Regardless of the inspiration, Burnham’s “let’s fly” feels perfect for her captaincy, and it fits well with the mood of Discovery. Too soon to put it this high on the list? Maybe. But it feels right.

2. “Make It So”

It’s tempting to rank Picard’s “Make it so” ahead of “Engage,” but for some reason, the formality of it makes it closer to a “Manifest” or “Execute.” That said, it’s iconic for a reason. Just never forget that one time, Picard said “Step on it,” when he was still acting like Dixon HIll.

1. “Engage!”

While Picard certainly made “Engage” his own on S tar Trek: The Next Generation , the first Star Trek captain who said “Engage,” was Captain Pike! In the TOS pilot “The Cage,” Jeffrey Hunter’s Pike said “Engage,” which sort of means Anson Mount can bring it back at any time. (Can you imagine Hunter saying “Hit It” in 1964?) Captain Kirk also said “Engage” in the episode “The Corbomite Maneuver.”

Does this mean Saru can use “Engage?” Does he even know about Picard yet? Considering how much time has passed since the era of Picard, Saru could get away with “Enage” in the context of the 32nd Century, but certainly not in the context of fans in 2020. Maybe because the USS Discovery spins around before jumping, there’s an easy answer close at hand. How about Saru just says: “Spin me!”

Yeah, that one needs a workshop, too.

Star Trek: Discovery — It’s DISCO TIME! — is available to watch on CBS All-Access.

Did These Quotes Open Your Eyes to the World?

Venturing out into the unknown is not an easy feat. But, it is through this curiosity that we can grow and develop as individuals.

This is one of the main lessons that Star Trek wants to impart to its viewers. Life is not limited to what you can see, hear, and touch. Most of the time, there are countless amazing things that we are yet to experience.

As they went on their voyage, they learned many things about the world, their teammates, and themselves. In the same way, if we explore beyond our comfort zones, we’ll be able to open our eyes to the different realities that people go through every day.

These realities will then lead us to make choices that can impact ourselves and the world. It’s difficult, but thanks to Star Trek, we’re made aware that every decision should be made with logic and emotion. Listen to both your heart and your mind, find a balance, and we’re sure you’ll make the best choice possible.

No doubt, Star Trek is a show that entertains and shares pearls of wisdom we can never get from the usual shows. So, we hope that you were able to learn a thing or two through this collection. Feel free to reread the list and find more new lessons relevant to you!

Spock Quotes

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.

In critical moments, men sometimes see exactly what they wish to see.

Insufficient facts always invite danger.

It is curious how often you humans manage to obtain that which you do not want.

Without followers, evil cannot spread.

Change is the essential process of all existence.

The logical approach is usually the most reliable.

Without context, words and actions have no meaning.

Sometimes, having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting.

There is a difference between understanding the path and walking the path.

Live long and prosper.

Infinite diversity in infinite combinations.

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one.

Emotions are alien to me. I’m a scientist.

I find that insulting, and I’m a Vulcan.

Can an android write a symphony? Can a Vulcan pray?

I object to intellect without discipline. I object to power without constructive purpose.

The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.

It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more.

The appearance of a flaw is the beginning of wisdom.

One can begin to reshape the landscape with a single flower.

Captain, necessity is the mother of invention.

Spock Quotes part 2

I’m not so much interested in the metaphysical.

Bluffing is a primary skill of diplomacy.

Compassion: that’s the one thing no machine ever had. Maybe it’s the one thing that keeps men ahead of them.

An ancestor of mine maintained that if you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

May I say that I have not thoroughly enjoyed serving with humans? I find their illogic and foolish emotions a constant irritant.

May I point out that I had an opportunity to observe your counterparts here quite closely. They were brutal, savage, unprincipled, uncivilized, treacherous—in every way, splendid examples of homo sapiens, the very flower of humanity. I found them quite refreshing.

Evil does seek to maintain power by suppressing the truth.

That’s true. It’s definitely easier to have faith in one’s beliefs than to be in the uncertain position of not knowing.

Without those hours of patient, silent study, no one can become a scientist.

Our ancestors cast out their animal passions on this world.

When one is unsure of one’s own position, one becomes argumentative.

If you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

The complex systems of life depend upon each other. We would not exist without the microbes.

Emotion is the enemy of logic.

The prejudices people feel about each other disappear when they get to know each other.

It’s fascinating how much more work I can get done when someone else does it.

Sometimes, having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting. It is not logical, but it is often true.

Computers make excellent and efficient servants, but I have no wish to serve under them.

Instruments register only what is measurable. Quantum physics research deals with one reality of possibilities.

Our lives are a sum total of the choices we have made. We are what we repeatedly do.

Star Trek Quotes: Leonard Nimoy’s Best Spock Quotes

Kirk loses his son but regains his best friend in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . After being reborn, advancing to middle age and undergoing a Vulcan ceremony to retrieve his aura, Spock meets Kirk again, but doesn’t remember him. He asks why the admiral would risk the lives of his crew to save him, and Kirk turns Spock’s famous logic on its head: “The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.” There’s a pause, and Spock begins reciting lines from the end of Wrath of Khan before saying “Your name is Jim.” Cue one of the most endearing Trek moments ever as the rest of the crew runs to embrace Spock.

Leonard Nimoy died at 83 Friday , leaving behind a body of work spanning decades.

For nearly 50 years, Star Trek ’s Spock has been the most prominent philosopher in movies and television, mixing the logical mind of Sherlock Holmes and the inspirational messages of ancient proverbs.

In memory of Nimoy, let’s take a look back at 10 of Spock’s finest quotes.

10. “May I say that I have not thoroughly enjoyed serving with humans? I find their illogic and foolish emotions a constant irritant.” – Star Trek , season 3, episode 7 (“Day of the Dove,” 1968)

9. “Computers make excellent and efficient servants, but I have no wish to serve under them.” – Star Trek , season 2, episode 24 (“The Ultimate Computer,” 1968)

8. “Insufficient facts always invite danger.” – Star Trek , season 1, episode 24 (“Space Seed,” 1968)

7. “In critical moments, men sometimes see exactly what they wish to see.” – Star Trek , season 3, episode 9 (“The Tholian Web,” 1968)

6. “After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting. It is not logical, but is often true.” – Star Trek , season 2, episode 1 (“Amok Time,” 1968)

5. “Without followers, evil cannot spread.” – Star Trek , season 3, episode 5, (“And the Children Shall Lead,” 1968)

4. “When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” – Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , 1991

3. “I could not deprive you of the revelation of all that you could accomplish together, of a friendship that will define you both in ways you cannot yet realize.” – Star Trek , 2009

Nimoy’s Spock spoke these words to a younger version of himself ( Zachary Quinto ), explaining why he asked young Kirk ( Chris Pine ) not to reveal his existence. It is among the most poignant summaries of the Kirk-Spock relationship in Trek lore.

2. “Live long and prosper.” – First spoken in Star Trek , season 2, episode 1 (“Amok Time,” 1968)

In the interview above, Nimoy revealed his Jewish heritage influenced the famous Vulcan benediction.

1. “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” – Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , 1982

Spock shared this philosophy with Kirk earlier in the film, and later used it to explain why he sacrificed his own life to save the Enterprise. The line is possibly the most famous in Trek history.

There are two types of people in this world — those who love William Shatner as the “Priceline Negotiator,” and those who love him as space philosopher and Adonis Captain James Tiberius Kirk. Today is Shatner’s 84th birthday, so join us in remembering these philosophical musings from one of pop culture’s greatest characters.

Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek : The Original Series introduced excited science-fiction fans to the iconic duo Spock and Kirk . Often at odds with one another because of how vastly their point of view differed, Spock's logic paired well with Kirk's impetuous nature, provoking thoughtful commentary and hilarious banter. There was a definite sense of balance between them, with each man poised at opposite sides of the spectrum, but they almost always found common ground when necessary.

Leonard Nimoy's portrayal of the half-human, half-Vulcan was iconic. Spock paved the way for the creation of numerous characters as the Star Trek franchise began to expand. His influence over the development of the android artificial intelligence Data (Brent Spiner) in The Next Generation is clear in Data's curiosity about human nature. He can be seen also be seen in Voyager 's holo-physician, The Doctor (Robert Picardo), who employed an acerbic bedside manner and logic for problem-solving the crew sometimes lacked. Deep Space 9 's changeling Chief of Security, Odo (Rene Aubergenois), carried himself with a similar sense of rigidity. While each of them shared personality traits with Spock, one of the most prominent similarities they shared was the perspective of an outsider--always viewing humanity, judging and trying to understand its nature.

With Leonard Nimoy's passing, his legacy as Spock carries on through actors like Zachary Quinto and Ethan Peck. Quinto gave voice to Vulcan logic in the Star Trek reboot films directed by J.J. Abrams, while Peck portrays young Spock in Discovery and Strange New Worlds . Nimoy set the foundation, establishing an unforgettable character who spoke volumes on the nature of humanity over the years.

Spock's unique view on life, humanity, and most especially his fellow crew mates sometimes led to strained relationships. Therein lay his deepest observations and wittiest banter. Spock fought hard to deny the human side of his nature, and all too often his read on the people around him only furthered his desire to forget that despite being raised on Vulcan, he was still part-human himself.

15 "It is more rational to sacrifice one life than six, Doctor."

Logic and rationale were at the forefront of everything Spock adhered to, which often made it hard for the people around him to relate. It was easy for him to make judgment calls that would give others pause as they weighed it all out because in his mind the right answer was always the logical one. Even when it came to having to sacrifice lives, he was quick to point out something that would become a standard Star Trek philosophy: the needs of the many far outweigh the needs of the few or the one.

It is a logical observation, to be sure, but in the 1967 episode "The Galileo 7," Dr. McCoy can't wrap his head around Spock's rational response. What McCoy more than likely struggled with was how quick and easy it was for Spock to decide another's fate, even it was rational.

14 "I am frequently appalled by the low regard you Earthmen have for life."

In that same 1967 episode that provoked Spock's quick reaction to saving the many over the one, he also made note of how appalling he found the human disregard for life itself. This prompted an eventual debate about their responsibility to weigh all components before making rash judgments and decisions when his crewmates Gaetano and Boma suggest destroying the antropoids that have stranded them. This episode provided a lot of insight into how the people Spock worked with every day viewed him. They found his cold rationale to be unnerving, but in the end, he made the most sound decisions to display his respect for life as a whole.

13 "Evil does seem to maintain power by suppressing the truth."

When Spock and the crew bring a group of children suffering from amnesia aboard the Enterprise in Season 3, Episode 4, "And the Children Shall Lead," McCoy discovers that they've all blocked out the details of specific events, including what happened to their parents. While trying to make sense of not only what happened, but why those specific memories were wiped, Spock recognizes evil's inclination to avoid outright lying by withholding information entirely. So long as those they wish to control don't know all the facts, they will go on believing whatever they are told.

After the children become possessed by the dark spirit that destroyed their lives, Spock shows them footage of what really happened. Learning the truth broke the entity's hold over them, allowing them to finally grieve for what they'd lost. This is definitely a piece of wisdom that carries over into the world, encouraging everyone to seek the truth and find the facts before committing to another's beliefs or will.

12 "Vulcans never bluff."

In the 1966 episode " The Doomsday Machine ," Spock finds himself pushed out of the command position Kirk left him in when he refuses to attack a massive planet killer. Decker, the man who took over, eventually provoked Spock's ire after Kirk found out what was going on. Insisting that Decker step down, he challenges Spock's authority and accuses him of bluffing. Spock's claim that Vulcans don't bluff may be somewhat exaggerated, but their reputation for keeping a cool head in the face of adversity certainly makes his words believable. There's a chance he was bluffing, but how would one actually know?

11 "...The female capacity to avoid a direct answer to any question."

The 1960s were a much different time, but Star Trek did attempt to at least given women equal opportunities aboard the Enterprise. On the other hand, the show often portrayed them in a narrow minded light. Like Spock noting his failure to understand why it was so hard for women to directly answer a question when asked. At the time, a joke like that might be easily overlooked as just women and those pesky feminine wiles of theirs. Today it wouldn't stand. Spock may have been half-Vulcan, but his half-human side didn't always prevent him from adopting a poor view on females.

10 "Captain, you almost make me believe in luck."

Luck is entirely illogical, according to Spock. Those who put their stock in luck are asking to be let down, but Captain Kirk's quick wit and ability to find his way out of a tight spot are often inspired. Even Spock can't help but admire the captain, confessing that the ease with which he solves a major problem in Season 1, Episode 23, "A Taste of Armageddon," is almost enough to make him believe in the possibility of luck itself.

9 "If I were human, I believe my response would be 'Go to hell'."

In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , Spock finds himself questioning whether age has made him and Kirk too rigid and set in their ways to be useful. When Uhura tells him that they are to return the Enterprise to dock, so she can be decommissioned, he lets himself give in to his human side by telling authority to go to hell. Even after all those years out there among the stars, Spock still struggled to accept that a part of him was human, clinging almost desperately to his Vulcan half. This rare moment in which he relents is proof enough that neither he nor Kirk are too old to keep going as long as it takes.

8 "Logic is the beginning of wisdom. Not the end."

Another bit of wisdom from the 1991 film, The Undiscovered Country , Spock finds himself face to face with his own Vulcan apprentice, Valeris, who turns out to be an assassin working against the Enterprise. Much of the original Star Trek saw Starfleet in constant, tense negotiations with the Klingons. Given their nature, Valeris didn't believe peace with them to be logical, and given the Klingon nature, perhaps her viewpoint was logical. But as Spock pointed out, logic is just the beginning when it comes to making wise decisions. One can't rely on that alone to determine outcomes.

7 "It is the lot of man to strive, no matter how content he is."

Even in the proposed future, with humankind out gallivanting among the stars, Spock observes their ever-present sense of ambition. No matter how far humanity comes, or how much they achieve, there is a constant push to do more, receive more, and strive for more. Perhaps slowing down and taking stock in one's contentment would grant a new perspective, one in which they don't need to strive ever onward, but it's hard to imagine. Humanity reached for the stars and grasped onto them, but there must be more and they will find it.

6 "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."

As mentioned previously, this philosophy became a focal point for Star Trek as a whole. No matter where the journey takes a crew, they will always face situations that require this reminder. The number of people out there among the stars who are perfectly content to destroy an entire world or system to save just one person is greater than one might imagine. The idea of losing a single loved one is painful, but setting aside that pain and embracing logic has the power to preserve the continued growth and expansion of life overall.

5 "Insufficient facts always invite danger."

Kirk didn't become captain because he was impetuous, but he did have a tendency to charge in first and ask questions later. Fortunately, he had Spock by his side to remind him to take care. Charging into a situation without all the facts is dangerous. While Kirk may like to laugh in the face of danger, it's definitely been a source of trouble for him throughout his career. It likely would have been a lot worse if not for Spock.

4 "Men sometimes see exactly what they wish to see."

In the most critical moments, it's far too easy to overlook what's right there and see what one wants instead. How often did Spock see only what he wanted to see? Perhaps while looking in the mirror, seeing only the Vulcan side of himself, ignoring the human.

Despite his wise observations on human nature, Spock had flaws of his own. It would be easy for him to see his humanity reflected in his faults, but a good many of them boiled down to his Vulcan nature. It would be difficult, if not impossible, for him to ever admit that.

3 "It is curious how often you humans manage to obtain..."

Spock isn't the only living being to observe how often humans wind up getting exactly what they don't want. He noted how curious it seemed, "How often you humans manage to obtain that which you do not want." It goes hand in hand with humanity's lot in life to strive. In some ways, it's an afterthought on being "careful what you wish for," though it's likely Spock would note that wishes had nothing to do with the outcome.

2 "One man cannot summon the future..."

Mankind spends a lot of time thinking about the future, wishing it would hurry up and start happening now. But that's as illogical as it is impossible. While there are definitely some parallels between Vulcan logic and Zen philosophy, Spock's advice is about as Zen as it comes. "One man cannot summon the future, but one man can change the present." If things aren't going the way one wants, looking to the future won't make change happen. Focusing on the moment, the now, is the only way to provoke the changes one wants to see in their life.

1 "Live long and prosper."

Of the many logical and wise things Spock said over his many years in Starfleet, the one he remains most remembered for are the words spoken with the Vulcan salute. Hand raised, middle and ring fingers parted in a V, it almost always accompanied the words, "Live long and prosper." Translated into Vulcan, the phrase, " dif-tor heh smusma ," is often coupled with the words, "peace and long life".

It wasn't Spock, or even Leonard Nimoy, who originally coined the phrase. The inspiration came from a number of places, including an old Egyptian blessing, the Bible, William Shakespeare, and Stephen Crane. These days, when people hear those words the first person who comes to mind is Spock, and given the impact his character has had on generations of Trekkies, chances are that isn't going to change anytime soon.

Batman Gets a Hollywood Walk of Fame Star and Guinness World Records Title

Did bel-air kill off a major character in the season 3 finale, 'i wish i hadn't done it': beverly hills, 90210 star regrets returning for reboot.

Being a captain can't be easy. There are hundreds of people counting on them to make the right decisions that will keep them alive. Being the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise – the flagship of the United Federation of Planets – must come with even more stress. But fans of Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek would rarely see that pressure get to him.

Along with his decisive thinking, strategic planning, and sense of humor, Captain Kirk often kept his ship and his crew alive with nothing more than his words. The boy from Iowa lived by the ideals of the future, using his beliefs not only to navigate the universe but to deal with the dangers he and the crew faced. With his confidence and words, Captain Kirk showed us all just how great humanity could be.

Updated on September 13, 2023 by Joshua M. Patton: William Shatner is the iconic originator of Captain James Tiberius Kirk, the first captain of the USS Enterprise that Star Trek fans fell in love with. However, in the nearly 60 years of history behind Gene Roddenberry's created universe, he's not the only actor to portray the character. With Chris Pine donning the signature gold shirt in the film trilogy set in "the Kelvin Timeline," and Paul Welsey taking on the role in Strange New Worlds, Kirk's wit and wisdom continues to expand.

20 “Hang On Tight And Survive. Everybody Does.”

[T]here are a million things in this universe you can have and a million things you can't have. It's no fun facing that, but that's the way things are.... Hang on tight and survive. Everybody does.

The first season episode "Charlie X" saw the Enterprise welcome a young man named Charlie aboard the ship who had spent years surviving alone. Charlie had been modified by aliens to survive their harsh planet, which gave him incredible abilities like telepathy that he used to force the crew into uncomfortable situations.

Charlie struggled with acclimating to his new way of life onboard the Enterprise where he didn't get everything he wanted, and despaired about going on with his life. Kirk was able to make him see that he could push through, surviving one day at a time like the rest of humanity.

19 "Either We're Going Down or They Are"

Attention crew of the Enterprise, this is James Kirk. Mr. Spock has resigned commission and advanced me to acting captain. I know you are all expecting to regroup with the fleet, but I'm ordering a pursuit course of the enemy ship to Earth. I want all departments at battle stations and ready in ten minutes. Either we're going down... or they are. Kirk out.

The mission of Starfleet is one of peaceful exploration and curiosity, but no matter which actor is playing Captain James T. Kirk, he's always read to fight when its necessary. In 2009's Star Trek when Earth is threatened by the time-traveling Romulan villain Nero, he takes command of the USS Enterprise to save the planet.

The version of Kirk in this film is much different than the one fans know, yet even after living a life of loss and aimlessness, once Kirk ended up where he belonged -- in the Captain's chair -- he became the man fans know and love. He will avoid a fight whenever he can, but if he can't? No one can stop him from saving the day.

18 "Don't Skip Good Hot Dogs"

My advice? Don't skip good hot dogs when you can get them.

Strange New Worlds Season 2 featured another time-travel romp, this time offering an alternate future version of James T. Kirk who wasn't part of Starfleet or the Federation, but rather the United Earth Fleet. His timeline was one of devastation and war. While La'an Noonien Singh, Khan's descendant , and the Enterprise Chief of Security, is trying to puzzle out their mission in the past, Kirk reminds her to take advantage of the good things that come her way.

17 “What Is a Man?"

What is a man but that lofty spirit, that sense of enterprise, that devotion for something that cannot be sensed, cannot be realized, but only dreamed, the highest reality?

The crew of the Enterprise was faced with a heavy decision when they encountered a planet full of androids that wanted to serve humanity by replacing their bodies with artificial ones and granting them eternal life in the second season's "I, Mudd."

However, Kirk was able to talk some of the curious members of his crew out of the decision by pondering exactly what it is that makes them all human – listing many of the reasons that humanity ventured into space in search of the unknown in the first place, which could never be replicated by the artificial androids.

16 “I Need My Pain!”

You know that pain and guilt can’t be taken away with the wave of a magic wand! They’re the things we carry with us, the things that make us who we are. If we lose them, we lose ourselves. I don’t want my pain taken away, I need my pain!

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier explored the ongoing Star Trek search for God that made a number of crew members question their faith and the surrounding reality, especially when members of the crew were "cured" of negative emotions like pain and guilt.

However, Kirk refused to undergo the same process as he felt that those feelings helped shape who we are and who we become, which ultimately allows humanity to make the right decisions. He was right, as the God-like being was later revealed to be an evil being who was trapped and manipulating others to facilitate his escape.

15 "The Prejudices People Feel..."

The prejudices people feel about each other disappear when they get to know each other.

Tasked with ensuring that the arranged marriage of the leaders of two warring planets takes place without interference, Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise find themselves dealing with an angry bride, a nervous groom, and a group of Klingons who plan to sabotage the event.

Kirk's words come from a more mature and evolved version of mankind that has worked past its biases based on skin color, religion, or gender. He knows as all humans in Star Trek do, that the only way to move forward is to work together. To see the things we have in common and celebrate the things that make us different.

14 "Sometimes A Feeling Is All We Humans Have"

Sometimes a feeling is all we humans have to go on.

When the Enterprise finds itself caught up in a centuries-long planetary war where the casualties are decided by a computer program, Captain Kirk knows that the only way to bring about peace is to remind the people of the planet what war really is. By leaving the outcomes of battles to a computer, the people have done away with the lasting scars of war and come to accept the ritual deaths as something of a sacrifice that must be done.

Kirk risks everything by destroying the war computer, forcing the leaders of the world to decide if it is better to continue their war with actual destruction and devastation or if the time has come to talk peace. In his gut, Kirk knows they will make the right choice.

13 "His Was The Most... Human"

"We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. And yet it should be noted that in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most... human."

In all fiction, there are few friendships as iconic as that of Captain Kirk and Mister Spock. It is impossible not to think of one when you think of the other. These two men, one an emotional human the other a rational Vulcan, will always be the greatest duo in Star Trek .

When Spock gave his life for the crew of the Enterprise in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , Kirk was left to write a eulogy not only for his Science Officer but his closest friend in all the universe. His words ensured that there wasn't a dry eye in the theater.

12 "Believe In Yourself"

You either believe in yourself, or you don’t.

A captain needs confidence, and that's something Kirk has in spades. He knows that if he doesn't believe in the mission, then his crew won't believe in it either, and if he doesn't believe in himself, they won't be comfortable following him.

Even more important is the knowledge that without believing in oneself, there is no hope for improvement. And if a person can not improve, then what is the purpose of existence? To Captain Kirk, there is no more important thing for a person to have than faith in themself.

11 "If Man Was Meant To Fly, He'd Have Wings..."

They used to say that if man was meant to fly, he’d have wings. But he did fly. He discovered he had to.

From the story of Icarus to the stories of superheroes today, mankind has always been inspired by the idea of flight. The idea of a man soaring through the skies seemed like an impossible task, but in less than 60 decades, humanity went from a 12-second 120-foot flight to sending the first man into space.

What Captain Kirk is saying here is that humanity has always stepped up to the challenge, and we always will. It won't be easy, and we'll fall down often, but in the end, we will succeed because we must.

10 "There's No Such Thing As The Unknown..."

There's no such thing as the unknown, only things temporarily hidden.

The unknown can be scary. The idea that just out of sight, hiding in the darkness is something that can hurt us is what most horror is built around, and for good reason. Be it the monster in the closet or the alien from Venus, we fear that which we do not know.

But if we think like Captain Kirk, the unknown isn't something to be frightened by. The unknown becomes something exciting to discover. The unknown is out there, just waiting to be found. Suddenly, that fear becomes a feeling of optimism.

9 "Genius Doesn’t Work On An Assembly Line Basis."

Genius doesn't work on an assembly line basis. Did Einstein, Kazanga, or Sitar of Vulcan produce new and revolutionary theories on a regular schedule? You can't simply say, today I will be brilliant.

When Captain Kirk and the crew are sent to evaluate a supercomputer that could make their jobs redundant, he quickly sees the flaw in the plan. A computer may be able to react faster than a person, but it can never invent or show discretion.

It can never create or devise a plan that isn't preprogrammed, leaving it open to failure by a lack of improvisation. As Kirk sees it, all great things are created by those who think beyond what is and see what may be. It is the living being who can do this and no computer, no matter how great, will be able to replicate that.

8 "We're Human, And ... That Best Explains Us."

We prefer to help ourselves. We make mistakes, but we're human, and maybe that's the word that best explains us.

Star Trek captures the strength of the human race better than most other shows. As Kirk says, we make mistakes, but we don't just lay down and give up. We move forward even as we stumble, working to make things better. To make ourselves better, and in turn, make the world better.

Captain Kirk is no stranger to making mistakes, but he knows that each mistake must be learned from, and what was learned must be used to make improvements, all so new mistakes can be made, and new lessons learned.

7 "How We Deal With Life"

How we deal with death is at least as important as how we deal with life.

As the captain of the Enterprise, Kirk knows that he, and any other captain that is to follow him, will be forced to make life and death decisions on a regular basis. In his time, Kirk has seen more death than he would have preferred, and many of those deaths he holds himself responsible for. Still, Kirk knows that he can not let those deaths keep him from moving forward. He knows that if he and his crew were to give in, all those who died for them would have died in vain.

6 "That's What I Was Born Into"

Better to die saving lives... than to live with taking them. That's what I was born into.

This moment from Star Trek: Beyond was something of a full-circle moment for the Kelvin Timeline Captain Kirk. His father died saving his life and the lives of an entire starship crew. When facing off with Balthazar M. Edison, who was trying to destory a massive starbase, he truly became the kind of hero his father was.

Star Trek is about hope and optimism. The big-budget blockbuster needs of the 21st Century movies may have gotten in the way of that message, but in Star Trek: Beyond the audience finally gets to hear a Jim Kirk who sounds familiar.

5 "Sometimes You Can't Avoid a Fight"

Did it ever occur to you that sometimes you can't avoid a fight?

The Season 1 finale of Strange New Worlds was a time-travel adventure showcasing what would happen if Captain Pike stayed on the USS Enterprise. In trying to avoid a fight with the Romulan Star Empire, he ended up starting a devastating war.

This message from Kirk, played by Paul Wesley, shows that even the Prime Timeline version of the character knows when to seek peace and when to give villains the fight they are looking for. It's better to face an enemy than to leave them to harm others because one didn't.

4 “I Don't Believe In The No-Win Scenario.”

I don't believe in the no-win scenario.... I don't like to lose.

One of the best movies in the long-running franchise, 1982's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan introduced a number of oft-repeated quotes and inspired an altered take on the story in the modern reboot franchise. Kirk's ability to see every angle and find a way to win against all odds was best displayed by his quote about no-win scenarios, as well as the reveal that he was able to beat the training exercise known as the Kobayashi Maru – which was designed to be unbeatable in order to make cadets face their potential death in service to the Federation..

3 "You Can Let Death Win, Or You Can Fight Back"

Our job puts up against death more than is fair, and we may not like it, but we do have to face it. And right now, death is winning. It claimed your family. It claimed your friend. It convinced you to forget them because it is less painful than holding onto their memories. Now you can you let death win, or you can fight back. Hold onto them.

Another Season 2 episode of Strange New Worlds featured an adventure with James T. Kirk and Nyota Uhura , where the latter was experience visions and mental distress. He was the first person to believe what was happening to her was real.

When Uhura began to lose hope, because of the loss of her family a few years earlier, Kirk inspires her the way only the future captain could. Echoing Shatner's "I need my pain," line, he tells her that the memories of those we've lost are not burdens but blessings.

2 "Khaaaaaan!"

Khan, you have Genesis, but you don't have me! You were going to kill me, Khan, it was your sole purpose. You'll have to come down here to do it!

While it isn't the longest or most profound line that Captain Kirk ever delivered, his scream of rage and frustration in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is easily one of the character's most quoted and spoofed lines from Star Trek .

The line comes after Khan successfully takes the Genesis Device while also stranding Kirk and his crew inside a planetoid as revenge for Kirk doing the same to Khan and his crew. Kirk's protest is filled with such raw emotion that it quickly became one of the most memorable scenes from the Star Trek movie franchise and was even reimagined for the reboot trilogy.

1 "To Boldly Go"

This is the final cruise of the Starship Enterprise under my command. This ship and her history will shortly become the care of another crew. To them and their posterity will we commit our future. They will continue the voyages we have begun, and journey to all the undiscovered countries, boldly going where no man... where no one has gone before.

These words have been said by many a Star Trek captain, but Captain Kirk was the first. And while the exact words have changed over the years to be more inclusive, what Kirk said in the opening of every episode of Star Trek over fifty years ago still captures the hearts, minds, and imaginations of millions today.

The idea that humanity will one day travel among the stars, discovering new life and new civilizations, boldly going where no one has gone before is a concept that fills the world with the hope of a better tomorrow. The kind of tomorrow that Captain Kirk was a part of. The final time he said these words, in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country he changed things around, ditching both the gendered language and the idea that the Enterprise crew was Starfleet's only explorers.

Star Trek: Actors Who Could Have Played Benjamin Sisko Before Avery Brooks

Avery Brooks speaking

When it comes to ranking "Star Trek" captains,  Commander Benjamin Sisko of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" might not seem like the flashiest on paper. But because of his calm exterior, chill space dad energy, solid work-life balance, passion for baseball, and talent for serving up tasty Cajun cuisine, he's arguably one of the best commanding officers in the Star Trek franchise. And a big part of what makes Sisko tick is the actor behind him. In a science fiction franchise elevated by the performances of iconic stars like Patrick Stewart and Kate Mulgrew, Avery Brooks is considered by many fans to be one of the finest actors in the "Star Trek" universe.

But according to a set of casting notes released in 2018, Sisko might look very different in a parallel universe where another actor got the gig. Although "Doctor Who" actor Peter Capaldi, who also auditioned for Sisko, isn't on the list, the names that are might surprise you. Posted by X user  trekdocs,  an account that shares vintage Star Trek images and documents, the lengthy two-page document is a casting memo dated 7/22/92. Written up ahead of the "Deep Space Nine" pilot "Emissary" from the desk of casting director Junie Lowry-Johnson, this wish list of potential Siskos is full of interesting names that will be familiar to many science fiction fans, alongside some fairly big-name actors. The list, which includes more than 50 actors, includes names like Colin Firth, Tim Matheson, and Gary Busey.

Laurence Fishburne and Colin Firth weren't interested in doing television

Laurence Fishburne

One of the most interesting things about the "Deep Space Nine" casting notes for the role of Sisko is what they reveal about how attitudes toward television and sci-fi have changed through the years. While many TV productions are considered every bit as prestigious as film these days —  even the sci-fi gigs — this certainly wasn't the case in the 1990s. Because of this, we can hardly fault the actors who heard the words "'Star Trek' TV show" and took a hard pass, even if fans think the franchise is the next best thing to "Masterpiece Theatre." Several actors on the 1992 casting sheet were noted as having "No interest in TV Series." Included among them was Liam Neeson, who probably made the right decision; the actor was cast in his breakout role in the Oscar-winning film "Schindler's List" the same year.

Also listed as having no interest in a TV series is Bill Paxton of "Aliens" and "Twister" fame, an actor who would go on to star in the critically acclaimed HBO series "Big Love" 14 years later. Other stars who declined auditions based on their desire to stay out of television at the time include Jamey Sheridan (Randall Flagg from "The Stand"), Rubén Blades (Daniel from "Fear the Walking Dead"), Gary Busey, Pierce Brosnan (James Bond from 1995-2002), Chris Cooper ("Adaptation" and "American Beauty"), Mr. Darcy himself Colin Firth, and Laurence Fishburne (listed as Larry on the casting memo).

David Duchovny and Terry O'Quinn were busy elsewhere

David Duchovny waving

Although it's not specifically noted that the desire to stay out of television played a role in their decision, quite a few other now big-name actors are annotated with "not interested" or "passes." Included among them are David Beecroft ("Melrose Place"), Vondie Curtis-Hall ("Chicago Hope" and "Daredevil"), Gary Cole ("The Good Fight"), David Duchovny (Fox Mulder from "The X-Files"), Will Patton ("Falling Skies"), and Ray Wise ("Twin Peaks"). Terry O'Quinn, who later starred as John Locke in ABC's "Lost," passed specifically because he was not interested in working on sci-fi projects.

Several actors were listed as unavailable because they were already working on other projects. Joe Morton, who would go on to win an Emmy for his role on "Scandal" and star in the sci-fi hit "Eureka," was working on the short-lived Fox series "TriBeCa" at the time, and Jeff Perry ("Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal," "Nash Bridges") was involved in a Chicago stage production. James Avery was busy playing Uncle Phil on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," Tim Curry was working on "Loaded Weapon," and John Slattery ("Mad Men") was starring in the ABC period drama "Homefront." Tim Matheson ("The West Wing"), Carl Lumbly (MCU's Isaiah Bradley), and Keith David ("Platoon," "The Flash") were all also too busy to take on the role Avery Brooks would eventually fill as Benjamin Sisko.  And Richard Beymer, who had just finished playing Benjamin Horne for three seasons on "Twin Peaks," is listed as directing a feature.

Mr. Krabs actor Clancy Brown wasn't available

Clancy Brown smiling

Although there's no way to know for sure, several actors on the casting memo may simply have been out of the Paramount budget. Next to Stephen Collins's name, who would go on to star in "7th Heaven" from 1996 to 2007, a handwritten note reads "NY — lots of $$," indicating location and salary expectations worked against his casting. The name of BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning actor Tom Conti, who played Einstein in "Oppenheimer," appears next to the note "Interest Doubtful, lots of Money." Louis Gossett Jr., listed as Lou Gossett, Jr., is listed as "Tech Avail, Interest Questionable. Offer only." Gregory Harrison ("Trapper John, M.D.") is also listed as "Offer Only."

And then there were the actors who simply had something else going on in their lives at the time, like Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs on "Spongebob Squarepants," among other roles), who had back surgery scheduled at the time. Actor John Kani, who plays T'Chaka in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is listed as only working in South Africa at this point in his career, and eventual "Australia's Got Talent" judge Tom Burlinson is listed as working only in Australia.

Some would-be Sisko actors would end up in Star Trek

Lower deckers with Leonardo

Even though not everyone on Junie Lowry-Johnson's casting memo got a turn at Sisko, a few would eventually make it into "Star Trek," even if some of them were roles you may have forgotten about. In 2002, Clancy Brown played a welcoming alien leader who turns out to be a terrorist in the "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode, "Desert Crossing."

Ray Wise, who had already appeared in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Who Watches the Watchers" back in 1989, later returned to the franchise as a refugee from the Borg's assimilation of his people named Arturis on "Star Trek: Voyager" in 1998. He also appeared in the fan film "Star Trek: Captain Pike" in 2016 along with veteran Trek actors Chase Masterson (dabo girl Leeta on "Deep Space Nine") and Linda Park (Hoshi Sato on "Star Trek: Enterprise").

By 1994, it seems Terry O'Quinn had moved past his embargo against sci-fi enough to appear as Starfleet Rear Admiral Erik Pressman in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Pegasus." And Gary Cole would provide the voice acting for Leonardo da Vinci in the "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "Crisis Point."

Is Star Trek’s Scotty Really A Miracle Worker? How USS Enterprise’s Engineer Got His Famous Nickname

Star trek's upcoming prequel movie is pulling the same trick for the 4th time, star trek explains why it uses 'quadrants' despite the universe being infinite.

Star Trek 's Lt. Montgomery Scott (James Doohan) made a long-awaited confession about his engineering prowess in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . Throughout the three seasons of Star Trek: The Original Series , Scotty gained a reputation as a "miracle worker" for his ability to fix almost any engineering-related problem. As Chief Engineer on the USS Enterprise of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner), Scotty maintained the ship's engines, as well as the transporter. Scotty was more familiar with the Enterprise's engines than anyone else, and he was responsible for saving the ship and its crew on numerous occasions.

As the second officer on the Enterprise, Scotty took command when both Captain Kirk and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) were on an away mission or otherwise incapacitated. Despite being more than capable of taking on a command role, Scotty never sought out a command position, preferring to remain an engineer. He took great pride in his work and took personal offense when others insulted the Enterprise. Scotty became known for completing his work faster than most, and it was not entirely by accident that he earned the title of "miracle worker," as he revealed in a conversation with Admiral Kirk in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock .

Scotty’s Confession To Kirk In Star Trek III Explained

Scotty confessed that he padded the estimates about how long it would take him to fix things.

After the opening credits of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, the USS Enterprise prepares to return home to Earth. Admiral Kirk asks Scotty how long it will take to repair the ship after the damage it suffered in the battle against Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban) in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . Scotty answers: "Eight weeks, sir. But you don't have eight weeks, so I'll do it for ya in two." Kirk then asks Scotty if he "always multiplied [his] repair estimates by a factor of four," to which Scotty replies: "Certainly, sir. How else can I keep my reputation as a miracle worker?"

Montgomery “Scotty” Scott is known as Star Trek’s resident “miracle worker.” Here’s how the famous Scottish engineer got such an impressive title.

Kirk assures Scotty that his reputation remains intact, but it does raise the question of whether Scotty really is a "miracle worker." Still, the Enterprise would have been lost many times over if not for Scotty's quick thinking. Scotty proved himself yet again in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, helping Kirk steal the Enterprise by automating the ship so that a skeleton crew could pilot it. Scotty also sabotaged the experimental USS Excelsior to prevent it from following the Enterprise to the Genesis Planet. While Scott's status as a "miracle worker" may be up for debate, no one can doubt that he's an excellent engineer.

What Happened When Scotty Told Star Trek: TNG’s Geordi Why He’s A Miracle Worker

Geordi was not particularly impressed by scotty's secret.

Star Trek: The Next Generation 's "Relics" revealed that after his retirement from Starfleet, Scotty was traveling on the USS Jenolan when the ship crashed on a Dyson sphere, with Scotty and one other crewmate the only survivors. Knowing that they would not survive long enough to be rescued, Scotty rigged the transporter system to hold on to their signatures indefinitely. Seventy-five years later, the USS Enterprise-D picked up the Jenolan's distress signal and rescued Scotty from the transporter buffer. Scotty soon finds himself out of his depth on the new Enterprise, as most of his engineering knowledge is now outdated.

When Scotty tries to help Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) in Engineering, he is surprised when La Forge gives Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) an accurate estimate of how long a task will take. Scotty tells Geordi that he's "got a lot to learn if you want people to think of you as a miracle worker." Unfortunately, Geordi does not have time to learn these secrets and asks Scotty to leave him to his work. In the end, Scotty's knowledge of 23rd-century technology helps save the Enterprise-D, proving that he's still one of Star Trek's best engineers, "miracle worker" or not.
