18 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in the UAE

Written by Jess Lee Updated Jul 26, 2022

The iconic high-rise skylines of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, rimming long sandy shorelines, have made the United Arab Emirates a popular destination for anyone wanting to mix a city break with some beach time.

Landmark tourist attractions, such as Dubai's towering Burj Khalifa and Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Louvre museum offer sightseeing within easy reach of the city sand.

A host of massive malls have made both cities renowned among shoppers as the best places to visit, and both offer vacationing families plenty of purely fun things to do, with an impressive list of major theme parks.

There's more to the UAE than the contemporary glitz of its two major cities, though.

The country's interior of desert and Hajar Mountains are all about big-sky scenery and adventure activities, from 4WD trips across a landscape of rippling dunes to taking on the world's longest zipline over the jagged contours of Jebel Jais.

There's also much more history here than those modern skyscrapers would have you believe. Sharjah and Al Ain are two cities dedicated to promoting Emirati heritage.

For ideas on the best places to visit, see our list of the top attractions and things to do in the United Arab Emirates.

1. Take a Beach Break

2. zoom up dubai's burj khalifa, 3. admire abu dhabi's sheikh zayed mosque, 4. get active on jebel jais in ras al-khaimah, 5. visit the louvre abu dhabi, 6. experience the uae's desert landscapes, 7. family fun at the theme parks, 8. explore dubai's al fahidi quarter, 9. view sharjah art museum's renowned art collection, 10. take a road trip up jebel hafeet, 11. dhow rides on dubai creek, 12. head into the hajar mountains, 13. take the kids to dubai aquarium & underwater zoo, 14. shop in the souks, 15. get active in hatta, 16. skydive over the desert or the city, 17. relax in historic al ain, 18. visit the sharjah museum of islamic civilization.

Camel on a United Arab Emirates beach

For many visitors, a UAE vacation centers around the beach.

Late October to May, while temperatures plummet over Europe and North America, is high season here as the UAE's punishing summer heat gives way to winter's beach weather.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the more obvious beach choices, offering city sightseeing, shopping, and theme parks in easy reach of the sand.

For sun-and-sand vacations in Dubai, luxury resorts are focused along the coast west of the central city. In particular, the beaches around Jumeirah and Dubai Marina offer plenty of family-oriented, five star resorts dedicated to beach time.

Abu Dhabi's luxury resorts rim the shoreline of the city's various islands, so resort areas are more scattered across the city than in Dubai. Saadiyat Island, Marina Breakwater, and Khor Al Maqta are the areas offering some of the best beach-focused resorts in town.

Away from these two destinations, though, there are more beach options.

The beach resorts of Ras Al-Khaimah and Ajman in particular are favorite city getaways, while on the UAE's eastern coast, Al Aqah beach in the Emirate of Fujairah is a popular option for beachgoers who want to head away from the crowds.

Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa is one of the United Arab Emirates most famous buildings and the soaring sky-high landmark of Dubai.

Not only is it the world's tallest building (at 828 meters high) it also lays claim to the titles of tallest freestanding structure in the world, highest observation deck in the world, and elevator with the longest travel distance in the world.

A trip up to the observation deck with its panoramic views across Dubai, is on most visitor itineraries, both to marvel at this modern engineering and architectural feat and to admire the dizzying views of Dubai laid out below you.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a mammoth modern mosque of incredible beauty.

Fusing contemporary design with traditional craftsmanship, the mosque harmoniously blends modern and ancient styles and techniques to create a new interpretation of Islamic architecture.

Both its exterior and interior utilize lavish amounts of gold, mosaic tiles, and glasswork to decorate the mosque's white marble stonework, while the architecture itself blends the various mosque designs of multiple Islamic empires.

Inside, the prayer hall is laid with the world's largest hand-knotted carpet (5,700 square meters) and illuminated by chandeliers made from 24-karat gold and crystals. While outside, the vast marble courtyard incorporates a mammoth swirling floral floor mosaic of semi-precious stones.

Hiker enjoying the view from Jebel Jais

The highest peak in the United Arab Emirates, Jebel Jais in the emirate of Ras Al-Khaimah is a major activity center.

You could come here simply to admire the vista of rugged Hajar Mountain peaks rippling down to the coastline plateau from the viewing platform terrace near the summit, or you can choose to match those views with some adventure activities.

The most popular mountain experience here is the Jebel Jais Flight, the world's longest zipline, which runs down the side of the peak for over two kilometers, reaching speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour.

For less speed thrills and more mountain time, Jebel Jais's Via Ferrata climbing route offers guided tours during the cooler months, while independent hikers can choose from six marked trails on the lower reaches of the mountain.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

The newest and most spectacular museum in the United Arab Emirates, the Louvre Abu Dhabi takes visitors on a journey through human history.

The collection has been sourced from across the globe and through the ages, beginning from the earliest human settlements to works by the major names in today's contemporary art scene, to demonstrate the links between cultures and civilizations that has threaded through humanity's narrative.

Whether you're interested in world history or art, the museum is a major draw, while the stark and ultra-modern architecture of the complex, designed by prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, is an attraction in itself.

Tracks in the desert

For those with an adventurous streak, make a beeline for the UAE's desert reaches that stretch across the country's southern interior.

There are plenty of adventure activities on offer, from 4WD trips across the desert dunes to camel trekking, sandboarding, and dune buggy trips.

Popular desert day trips from Dubai or Abu Dhabi usually include dinner at a desert camp after a 4WD journey into the dunes, and offer time at camp for other activities such as sandboarding or short camel rides.

Other desert tours allow more scope for wildlife spotting and specialized desert operators also offer overnight camping amid the dunes.

The desert interiors of the emirates of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Ras Al-Khaimah are also home to a number of luxury desert resorts, where stays are all about soaking up the dune scenery and heading out on desert activities.

Entrance to Wild Wadi Park in Dubai

  • In Dubai, Dubai Parks & Resorts offers four major theme parks rolled into one: Motiongate, dedicated to rides themed around Hollywood films; Bollywood Parks; Legoland Dubai; and Legoland Water Park.
  • The city is also home to IMG Worlds of Adventure with rides, roller coasters, and experiences themed around both Marvel storylines and characters for older kids, and the Cartoon Network for little ones.
  • If you just want to splash about for the day, though, Dubai's Wild Wadi Water Park is your best bet in town.
  • The best water park for older kids and teenagers wanting something more than simply slides is Wadi Adventure in Al Ain .
  • Here, it's all about white water kayaking, surfing, and wakeboarding, though there are swimming pools here, too, for when you need a rest from all the activities.
  • Abu Dhabi is home to two of the country's most famous branded theme parks both on Yas Island.
  • Ferrari World is a thrill-seeker's dream come true, with the world's fastest roller coaster as its landmark ride, while Warner Bros World offers six worlds to explore, from Cartoon Junction for small children to Metropolis and Gotham City with rides and attractions themed around DC Comic storylines.

Bastakia

The Al Fahidi quater of Dubai (also known as Bastakia) is the last remaining fragment of Old Dubai and shouldn't be missed. This small heritage area really evokes the simpler, gentler past of the city before skyscrapers took over the skyline.

The narrow lanes within the neighborhood are lined with carefully restored traditional buildings in typical Arabian architectural styles, many with the wind tower features, which kept houses cool before air-conditioning became common.

Many of the buildings now house small museums, art galleries, and craft shops, allowing you to enter the houses and see typical Arabian interiors.

The Sheikh Mohammed Center for Cultural Understanding is also based within the quarter and offers walking tours focused on the Al Fahidi quarter along with on-site traditional meals for visitors who want to experience local culinary heritage.

Interior of the Sharjah Art Museum

Sharjah Art Museum is home to one of the world's most renowned collections of work by Arab artists and art hailing from the Middle East.

Its permanent collection includes both pieces by the biggest names in contemporary Arab art from throughout the 20th century to the present, displayed in the Barjeel Collection Wing, and art from the 18th and 19th century created by both Arab artists and the European artists who focused on the Middle East in their work.

The museum is noted for its program of temporary exhibitions, which bring exhibits from both prominent and up-and-coming artists to the museum's lower floor galleries throughout the year.

Jebel Hafeet

Jebel Hafeet, on the edge of the oasis city of Al Ain is one of the most popular destinations for a quick and easy nature break out of Abu Dhabi city.

The cool mountain air on the summit also offers a respite from the coastal heat during summer.

This is the second highest peak in the United Arab Emirates, and far-reaching, sumptuous panoramas across the mountain's reaches and down to Al Ain greet you all the way up to the top on the winding road.

At the top of the twisting switchback mountain road, you are rewarded with being able to see across the area's vast sweep of desert stretching out in all directions.

Dubai Creek Dhow Ride

The Burj Khalifa may give you that famous skyline view from up high, but the most iconic Dubai views are still taken from the water.

Dubai Creek slices through the city, and the best way to experience Dubai is from one of the beautiful dhows (traditional Arabic boats) that ply the creek.

Sunset cruises (which often come with entertainment and dinner) are particularly popular among visitors, as you get to watch the lights of the high-rises begin to twinkle in the dusk.

For a budget cruise, though, just hop on one of the ablas (local ferries), which ply the water between Bur Dubai and Deira.

Hajar Mountains

The Hajar Mountains scythe through the northern interior of the UAE.

For nature lovers, the wadis (dry riverbeds or valleys) hidden within this region are prime territory for hiking, climbing, and bird-watching. Specialized adventure tour companies in Dubai and Ras Al-Khaimah offer wadi tours focused on these activities.

The Hajar Mountains are also great for road trips simply to take in the scenery of rolling, barren mountains.

Some of the tiny Hajar Mountain villages in the emirates of Ras Al-Khaimah and Fujairah are topped by historic watchtowers and small forts, which make good stop-offs along the way.

One of the most popular Hajar Mountain bases is the town of Hatta, which has become a major activity center in recent years, with kayaking on Hatta Lake and mountain biking in the surrounding area.

Aquarium Tunnel at Dubai Aquarium

Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo is one of the city's best family experiences but also offers plenty of activities and things to do for the more adventurous.

The 48-meter-long Aquarium Tunnel, with 190-degree views into the aquarium, featuring over 300 sharks and rays among the 140 species living here, is a fascinating step into the underwater world.

But as well as the Aquarium Tunnel, there are opportunities to visit a penguin enclosure, a crocodile enclosure, and to witness the daily shark and ray feeding times.

For the more adventurous, Dubai Aquarium offers a variety of scuba diving experiences, including shark diving.

Shoes for sale in a Dubai souk

For many visitors to the United Arab Emirates, shopping is one of the main attractions.

There are megalithic, glitzy malls by the dozen, but for a more local approach to shopping jaunts, you can't beat the souks (bazaars) .

In Dubai, the Deira and Bur Dubai districts, facing each other across Dubai Creek, are where you head for traditional shopping, with the Bur Dubai Souk, the city's famed Gold Souk, and the Spice Souk all here.

In Sharjah, the Central Souk is one of the city's landmark buildings, while nearby Souk Al Jubail is a foodie traveler favorite destination.

Abu Dhabi has also got its souk areas. The most popular is the modern World Trade Center Souk, designed by architect Norman Foster, with its shops and stalls selling handicrafts from across the Arab world.

Hatta Dam

The Hajar Mountain village of Hatta is a prime base for travelers who want to experience a slice of the UAE's Hajar Mountain scenery.

While the coast swelters in summer, temperatures here in the mountains, although still hot, tend to be dry rather than humid, making Hatta a popular weekend getaway for Dubai locals.

The turquoise waters of the vast Hatta Dam, surrounded by jagged mountain slopes, is the main tourist attraction, and many people are here chiefly to kayak or boat on the lake.

If you're looking for more activities, Hatta is home to several hiking and mountain biking trails across the surrounding mountain wadis and slopes, many with phenomenal Hajar Mountain vistas along the way. Due to this, it's become a top destination in the UAE for adventure travel and nature-based journeys.

There's also horse riding amid the Hajar foothills and, if you want bird's-eye views of Hatta's mountain scenery, tandem-paragliding.

Dubai skydiving

For the ultimate aerial views on your UAE trip, take to the skies for a tandem sky dive.

Tandem sky diving experiences are offered at two very different locations in Dubai:

Either opt for the city site , where sky divers take in vistas over the Dubai coastline with bird's-eye panoramas of the Palm Jumeirah island complex below, or head out to the desert site for views of undulating desert dunes and arid plateau as you descend.

Whichever you choose, both experiences provide one of the most thrilling sightseeing opportunities in the country.

Sky diving is available throughout the year at the city site, and the desert site closes during the summer months. Be aware, though, that sky diving is a weather-dependent activity, so it can be called off due to wind and visibility issues. If this happens, you will be offered either a full refund or a rescheduled spot.

Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain's oasis

The old caravan route stop-off of Al Ain, with its sprawling date palm oasis, is today a favorite getaway destination from Abu Dhabi.

For families, the major attractions are Al Ain's vast zoo, acclaimed for its conservation work and home to a safari-style experience, and the Wadi Adventure water park , with its white water rafting facility, as well as a bundle of more typical water park rides.

Once home to the ruling Al Nayyan family, Al Ain is also one of the UAE's most important historic destinations, with the Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain Palace Museum, and Qasr Al Muwaiji, all well-preserved remnants from the era before the oil boom.

To peek into the deeper past, the 5,000-year-old Umm Al Nar tombs at Al Ain's Hili Archaeological Park are one of the country's UNESCO World Heritage sites .

Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation

Sharjah's Museum of Islamic Civilization is the only museum in the country to focus on the breadth of Islamic history.

The collection inside traces Islam's course from the very early years to the spread of the Islamic empires through Asia and Africa, and explores the vast diversity of culture and art throughout the Islamic world.

As well as a wealth of artifacts and art objects, certain displays focus on separate facets of the Islamic faith and specific eras in Islam's history. Some displays feature rare manuscripts and religious documents, and tourists will find them easy to understand thanks to excellent information boards throughout.

Dubai Summer Temperature – How Hot Does it Actually Get?

While summer averages are reported at 45°C (113°F), it is quite typical to experience daytime maximums up to 50°C (122°F). The hottest month of the year in Dubai is August .

When is summer in Dubai? “Summer” in Dubai realistically runs from May until October .

Exactly how hot is Dubai? Check out this chart for Dubai’s average reported monthly temperatures (1) .

Dubai Air Temperature Chart

What you feel in Dubai and what is actually reported in the peas of summer can also be two different things! You need to take into account not only the temperature but also the humidity. It helps if you have a weather app that gives you the “feels like” temperature as well!

The humidity in Dubai tends to be more noticeable in the latter half of summer, August to September.

It’s also important to note that although you don’t get the sun’s powerful heat overnight, the temperatures don’t drop below 30°C (86°F). You can certainly see and do much more after dark without the glaring sun and heat, but be realistic about what can be done at night, too.

Let’s just agree: Dubai in summer is hot.

You can learn more about Dubai’s weather patterns and the best time to visit here.

Also check out these posts to learn more about the Dubai Summer months in detail MAY | JUNE | JULY | AUGUST | SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER

Dealing with the summer heat in Dubai is not nearly as difficult for most tourists as it might seem. First, nearly everything is airconditioned to the max—even too cold. You will arrive in an airconditioned airport, transfer to an airconditioned car or Metro train, and arrive at an air-conditioned accommodation. Even bus stops are air-conditioned in many locations!

Dubai desert heat skyline

Whilst the outside air temperature is extreme, most hotels will chill their pools in the summer months to make them a refreshing retreat. Swimming is still best tackled in the early morning and late afternoon/evenings (or look for a hotel with an indoor pool if you’d still like to get your laps in!).

The same cannot be said for the ocean, however!  You must be mindful that the salty waters of the Gulf can be too hot for swimming in over the summer (32-35°C/90-95°F); it will feel more like spa water than a refreshing break.

And if it isn’t obvious, the sand becomes excruciatingly hot in the summer. It only takes burning sand to become trapped in your sandals or flip-flops once to work this out, let alone if you dare walk on it barefoot!

Hot Sand Warning sign in the UAE

You should always dress sensibly for the heat.  However, please don’t have any misconceptions that ladies need to be wearing a full head covering or burka! This means, ideally, wearing loose cotton clothing that is still respectable.

  • We have a full guide on what you should expect to wear in Dubai here.

A couple of important summer clothing observations:

  • Tourists must note the difference between “resort wear” and what you wear publicly.  Although this seems to have relaxed over the years (maybe too much?), as a sign of respect, keep the skimpy clothing and bathers only to the pool & beach.
  • When walking through hotel public areas, on public transport, in malls and restaurants , you should ALWAYS dress respectfully for the Muslim country you are in. At a minimum, think covered knees and shoulders for both sexes and nothing too clingy and revealing – yep, you will see many people flaunting this “rule”.
  • Stick with cotton/rayon and breathable materials. Man-made materials will make you even hotter and sweatier.
  • Temperature drops between outside and indoor air conditioning can be extreme. Make no mistake, you will still want to pack a wrap or cardigan for those indoor blasts of cold!

Dubai Summer Attractions to Try in 2024

Whilst many seasonal favourites may be closed, there’s still plenty happening indoors to enjoy in Dubai over the summer months.

If you are looking especially for family activities in Dubai head over to this post to learn about 90+ indoor activities for kids.

One of the world’s largest malls still has a huge amount going on over the summer. You could spend a few days here and not run out of things to do!

Sitting in the heart of “Downtown Dubai”, some of our favourites at Dubai Mall include:

  • Burj Khalifa Observation Deck – (Levels 124 & 125 “At The Top” advance booking essential). The entrance is through the Dubai Mall basement level.
  • Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo   – you can view the world’s largest suspended tank from within the Mall for free or come in for plenty of interactive water life experiences.
  • Kidzania Dubai – a real-to-life town where kids “work” to earn Kidzos to spend on fun activities.

The Waterfall inside Dubai Mall

Dubai Mall is certainly not the only shopping mall with a lot going on.  In fact, malls are where most summer life circulates during the day in Dubai.

You can also try a few more novel indoor ideas in Dubai, such as:

It is easy to reach on the Metro (the stop is aptly named Mall of the Emirates), about 30 minutes away from Dubai Mall. The Mall of the Emirates is fairly close to those staying at any of the Jumeirah Hotels and is only about 10 minutes from the Dubai Marina/JBR area.

  • Ski Dubai & penguin encounters – sub-zero temperatures in the peak of summer, yes please!!
  • Magic Planet – extensive family entertainment complex including Yalla! Bowling , Highway66 mini bowling and Gravity Air Park – think trampolines!
  • Catch the latest flix at the huge Vox Cinema complex
  • Dreamscape – VR Experience rooms

Ski Dubai inside mall of the emirates

Situated south of Dubai city, this great suburban mall has entertainment and dining options. It’s not on the Metro, so you’d need a taxi/Uber . Why not try

  • ifly indoor flying simulator gravity-defying indoor fun!
  • Sky Trails and Climbing Wall  – part of the Magic Planet kids entertainment centre.
  • Massive 20-screen Vox Cinema offers every type of movie screening you can imagine!

A smaller community Mall that’s got a few key fun entertainment attractions for summer! You’ll find it on the Red Metro line (Rostamani Tower is 300m away, a 4 min walk or Financial Centre Metro is about 350m away 5 min walk)

  • Adventure Zone by Adventure HQ – offering indoor climbing walls, obstacle courses and more
  • Chillout Ice Lounge – enjoy a desert drink in sub-zero temperatures!

One of the city’s newest mega malls has loads of fun new indoor instalments, including:

  • Storm Coaster – the world’s largest indoor rollercoaster.
  • Adventure Park – climbing walls to rope courses keeping kids active indoors, designed for kids 4+.
  • Play DXB – another instalment of the highly popular VR Park as found in Dubai Mall (but with fewer queues for attractions!)

These are the best ones for keeping cool inside, though you may still need to walk outside a little to get to them!

  • The Dubai Frame – superb views as well as interactive displays around Dubai’s past and present in Zabeel Park.
  • Etihad Museum – learn more about the country’s recent history and journey to unification.
  • The Green Planet Dubai – an entirely indoor biodome experience that transports you to a tropical rainforest (warm but much cooler than outside!!) at City Walk.
  • La Perle evening extravaganza by Dragone is one of the city’s most highly acclaimed stage shows, and it has a permanent home in Al Habtoor City.

The Dubai Frame

  • IMG Worlds of Adventure is the only entirely indoor theme park in Dubai.
  • Dubai Parks and Resorts is another favourite family offering, including Legoland Dubai , Motiongate , and the newly opened Real Madrid World (in place of Bollywood). As it’s partly outdoors, it may not suit everyone – though you can also retreat inside to the expansive indoor play space, Neon Galaxy .
There’s a good detailed review here what you should expect at Dubai Parks and Resorts in the summer so you are fully prepared for just how hot it can be and what remains open.

Legoland Dubai at Dubai Parks and Resorts

  • If time permits and you have access to a transfer, our favourite indoor theme park is actually Warner Bros World in Abu Dhabi – you can easily access Warner Bros on a day trip from Dubai . We’d add to this list SeaWorld Yas Island, too, which is entirely indoors and includes the frosty-cold Antarctica realm, kept at 1°C!

There are a tonne more fun indoor activities, from rock climbing to escape rooms, that can all be enjoyed entirely indoors over the summer in Dubai – check out our complete Dubai indoor entertainment guide here.

The water parks are the main outdoor attractions that are still in full operation over the hottest summer months in Dubai.

Dubai Waterparks

  • Atlantis Aquaventure Water Park (entry included if you stay at Atlantis the Palm).
  • Wild Wadi Water Park (Entry included if you stay at one of the Jumeirah hotels – currently not open for public ticket sales).
  • Legoland Water Park – best for your smaller kids, based out in Jebel Ali attached to the Dubai Parks & Resorts complex.
  • Yas Waterworld (ok this one is actually on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi but it is definitely worth considering as a day trip, alongside the entirely indoors Warner Bros World with a free shuttle service from Dubai)
REMEMBER: Even if you hire a cabana, wear sunscreen and stay in the shade, it can still be excruciatingly hot outside even at a water park. Be mindful of hot surfaces (wear flip-flops or non-slip pool shoes everywhere and be VERY careful of touching surfaces).

Outdoor evening activities to try in Dubai in Summer:

As long as you are prepared for it to still be quite sweaty, even after dark, you could try these evening activities in Dubai once the sun goes down.

  • Dubai Garden Glow & Dinosaur Park – previously a winter venue, this park stayed open over Eid evenings last year and looks like it may stick around for a much longer season to light up your balmy evenings.
  • Walk around the Al Fahidi neighbourhood , taking in many of the city’s museums and galleries and along the creekfront at Al Seef before catching a traditional abra across the gold and spice souks in Deira.
  • The Walk in JBR, a popular outdoor dining district alongside the beach, still has a vibrant nightlife, although outdoor dining is mostly removed in the peak of summer.
  • Souk Madinat Jumeirah – a much more modern souk experience. From here, you get the spectacular views back to Burj Al Arab. Mostly indoor and airconditioned, lots of dining options and picturesque waterways.
  • A traditional dhow boat around Dubai Fountain Lake – see the Dubai fountains up close in this spectacular evening sound and light show.

Should I do a Dubai desert safari in Summer?

Many desert safari companies do continue to run over the summer, albeit on a reduced program.

summer tourist places in uae

We think this depends on how you cope with the heat, but from many years of experience, anything from late May to early October starts to get really sticky outside.

If you are heat-lovers you may still enjoy it, but with young kids, I would be extremely cautious of recommending a desert safari in the summer. An option might be to take an early morning desert safari instead to beat the worst heat of the day.

Our favourite attractions in Dubai that are NOT operational in summer (see links to find out when they will re-open, it;s variably around the end of October/early November) include:

  • Dubai Miracle Garden
  • Global Village Dubai
  • Ripe outdoor markets
  • Many day safari and beach sporting operators

Many restaurants and attractions do now remain open throughout summer, albeit with significantly reduced programs or only opening in the evenings. Outdoor brunches stop in the summer, and rooftop decks will only open in the evenings, if at all.

It’s always best to check opening hours from Ramadan (April onwards) all the way through summer for anything with an outdoor element.

Where to Stay in Dubai Over the Summer

The good news is that the answer is almost anywhere. All Dubai hotels will be airconditioned, and it’s very uncommon to come across a hotel that does not chill their pool in summer.

If you stay in a hotel directly attached to one of the malls or souqs, you will have excellent access to leisure and dining facilities without having to put a foot outside. Why not try;

  • Sheraton  at Mall of the Emirates, or top-end hotel, even with a ski lodge suite, try the Kempinski
  • Address Dubai Mall and Address Downtown – attached to Dubai Mall
  • Armani Hotel Dubai in Burj Khalifa, attached to Dubai Mall
  • Address Dubai Marina attached to Dubai Marina Mall
  • Jumeirah Al Naseem attached to Souk Madinat Jumeirah
  • InterContinental at Dubai Festival City – very close to DXB airport too
  • Jumeirah Beach Hotel attached to Wild Wadi Water Park
  • Atlantis the Palm attached to Aquaventure
  • Lapita at Dubai Parks & Resorts and Legoland Water Park
See some of our favourite Dubai hotels that INCLUDE a waterpark or slides!

Many hotel resorts also include mini water parks, lazy rivers, and kids’ clubs within their grounds. The choices are almost endless, and the summer value can be fantastic. A few suggestions to try:

  • Dukes t he Palm – lazy river & Duksey kids club (and stunning infinity pool )
  • Le Meridien Mina Seyahi – kids pool & kids club, playground, extensive dining options
  • Habtoor Grand Resort – slides, kids pool & infinity pool, indoor playground

For a truly unique experience during your Dubai stopover – and if the budget will stretch – why not stay in a hotel with a private pool?

Aeriel view of Atlantis the Palm in Dubai

If you are only in Dubai for a very short stopover, you may opt to simply stay in the airport over the hottest time of the year. We have a complete guide to things to do in DXB Airport here.

Summer travellers may also be able to take advantage of the My Emirates Pass, which provides discounts on scores of restaurants, retail stores and attractions, simply by showing you have an Emirates boarding pass (we await details of the 2024 program).

More frequently asked questions about summer in Dubai

It really depends on what you feel is “hot”. Generally speaking, it starts to get too hot for outdoor activity by the end of May. Many seasonal and outdoor events will start to close at the end of April/start of May. You will find little reprieve from the Dubai heat until the end of October.

Dubai can still be really pleasant and enjoyable to visit in the summer if you’re prepared to limit the amount of time you spend outdoors and set your expectations of what is possible to do in the summer heat. If you have an interest in visiting many of the city’s indoor attractions and are happy to leave most of your outdoor activities until after dark , you can still have a great vacation in Dubai in the summer.

This really depends on your tolerance to heat and what you want to do in Dubai. If you’re looking for a beach vacation full of days on the beach and playing in the water with the kids, you may be better off waiting for the weather to cool a little from October through April. If, however, your plans see you flying through Dubai in the hottest months, you can still absolutely fill an itinerary with more indoor activities and stay up later in the evening when the air cools (a little). Life just changes around a little in Dubai to cope with the heat.

Both July and August are extremely hot in Dubai, though the increase in humidity makes August feel like the hottest month.

We keep a temperature chart on our website at all times to help you keep an eye on current conditions – on a desktop computer, just look to the sidebar on your right; on mobile, scroll to the end of this page.

Dubai

The innovative and unique Museum of the Future in Dubai is an exciting new addition to the Dubai skyline. Listed as one of the most innovative structures in the world, this futuristic museum is poised to become one of the most exciting tourist attractions in the city. It gives visitors valuable insight into the future of human technology and innovation with practical exhibits, amazing installations and unique inventions that are yet to be introduced to the world population. At the Museum of the Future, you can get a glimpse into the human potential – and what the world could look like a few decades down the line. Along with the exhibits, the very structure of the museum is reflective of its innovation – where a portion of the building was made by robots. The exterior is defined by massive steel panels with Arabic inscriptions, which makes the museum as distinctive as other iconic structures in Dubai including the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Frame. You can explore 7 floors of fantastic installations and exhibits that let you imagine a world several years in the future. Where to Stay in Dubai in July 2024

Finding the right place to stay is crucial, especially in Dubai during July when the heat can be intense. Here are some accommodation tips that will help you choose the perfect spot, ensuring comfort and convenience for your summer trip.

Choose Location Wisely

Staying in a central location can significantly enhance your Dubai experience, allowing easy access to major attractions and minimizing travel time in the heat. The Dubai Marina and Downtown Dubai are excellent choices as they offer proximity to malls, restaurants, and indoor attractions. Plus, these areas are well-serviced by public transportation, including the Dubai Metro and tram.

Opt for Hotels with Good Amenities

When visiting Dubai in July, it’s essential to pick a hotel that offers excellent amenities. Look for properties with good air conditioning, swimming pools, and indoor recreational facilities. Many hotels also offer summer discounts, so you can enjoy luxury at a fraction of the cost. Hotels like Atlantis The Palm and Jumeirah Beach Hotel not only provide luxury but also direct access to water activities and indoor attractions.

Consider Family-Friendly Hotels

If you’re traveling with children, consider staying at family-friendly hotels. These hotels offer amenities like kids’ clubs, children’s pools, and family suites. Many also provide additional services such as babysitting, which can be a boon for parents looking to enjoy an evening out in Dubai.

Look for Business Hotels Offering Summer Deals

Business hotels often offer attractive rates during the summer months when business travel slows down. These hotels are typically equipped with all the necessary amenities and can provide a more peaceful stay, away from the tourist crowds.

Short-Term Apartment Rentals

Travel tips and safety - navigating dubai in july 2024, stay hydrated and protected from the sun.

The summer heat in Dubai can be intense, with temperatures often soaring above 40°C (104°F). Always carry a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day. Additionally, apply a high SPF sunscreen regularly, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and use sunglasses to protect yourself from the harsh sun.

Dress Appropriately

While Dubai is a modern city, it is still important to respect local customs regarding dress. Lightweight and loose-fitting clothing that covers shoulders and knees is advisable, not only to adhere to local customs but also to protect from the sun. In air-conditioned places like malls and restaurants, you might also want to carry a light sweater or shawl.

Use Public Transportation

Dubai’s public transportation is both efficient and air-conditioned. The Dubai Metro and trams are great options to get around the city while escaping the heat. Taxis are also readily available; however, traveling by metro can be more cost-effective and often faster, considering the traffic.

Be Aware of Local Laws and Customs

Understanding local laws and customs is crucial in Dubai. This includes regulations on public behavior, dress codes, and cultural etiquette. For instance, public displays of affection are frowned upon, and during Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight hours is prohibited.

Health Precautions

If you’re visiting during the COVID-19 pandemic or any other health crisis, adhere to local health guidelines. This includes wearing masks if required, using hand sanitizers, and maintaining social distancing.

Emergency Numbers

Always have a list of emergency contacts, including the local emergency number (999 for police, fire, and medical emergencies) and the contact details of your home country’s embassy or consulate.

Here's your to-do list for an exotic summer vacation in Dubai

In Frame: Chaos Karts

If trips to Dubai mean only shopping in Gold Souk and eating out for you, then probably you haven’t been to the happening city recently. A holiday in Dubai had us gaping over the plethora of options that the city offers to a family crowd looking for an exotic summer vacation. From rolling over on the icy floors to having a laid-back day eating burger soaking in the night views of the city, we did it all!

Ski Dubai

The cold rush

To battle the dry heat, we headed straight over to Ski Dubai. This remarkable snow park in the Mall of the Emirates became the one-stop destination for living out our dreams of shooting snowballs and making snow angels. We even took the ropeway to the highest point and enjoyed an unforgettable view and a hot cup of tea apart from taking loads of photographs in the snow, with the penguins and the reindeer!

In Frame: Chaos Karts

Opting for some artistic wonders we made a leisurely stop at the Arte Museum inside the Dubai Mall. As an art lover, this museum with its 10+ display rooms appealing to one’s sensory organs was one of the best we had seen for a long time. From feeling like standing inside a waterfall to walking into a blooming garden or seemingly being caught amid wild waves, to opening a page from the Jungle Book, we could experience it all. What caught our attention was the activity corner where we painted animals in the wildest colours possible, scanned them, and saw them move around on–screen. We reminisced our colourful cheetah long after we returned.

A short walk from the Dubai Mall was another artistic wonder- the Dubai Fountain. Set against the backdrop of the city’s skyline, surrounded by the Burj Khalifa, and several other sky-scrapers, the fountain appeared every 30-40 minutes to mesmerised the audiences sitting on boats or the many pedestrians who stopped to take it in. With songs and light play, it was an unmissable part of the trip.

We also tried our hands at painting and headed to The Jamjar to attend an art workshop. Taking inspiration from the many works hanging on the walls, we took to the canvas, painting an abstract sequence and filling it with colours and textures. Of course, our workshop guide took us through each step making the end product look better.

Al Seef Heritage Souq

On a rush of Adrenaline

Coming to Dubai and not engaging in adrenaline-rushing activities would have made the trip incomplete. So we anchored ourselves on the Go Karts and raced our way through the trippy arena while collecting points throughout the way to aim for the winning position. We competed against others in the Karts for the best position and also made use of several point boosters, vehicle attacks, and more which made the race interactive and competitive in a thrilling way! At one point in time, we only triggered the accelerator while forgetting the brakes even existed! The arena of Chaos Karts also had other games like finding our way through the laser lights and we enjoyed each one of them thoroughly.

Moving on, we entered the fascinating world of football with the world’s only foot ball theme adventure park – The Real Madrid World. After a short tour of the place, we entered the various arenas to soak in the experience of stepping into the shoes of a professional football player. While the rides were extremely exciting to look at, here’s us giving people wearing spectacles a pro tip to wear contact lenses and go since the rides do not allow candidates to sit with them on. After the hearty visit to the theme park, we made sure to indulge in a softy, which was a must-try at the park.

a delicious fare at CLAP

Gift-wrapping the experience

When in Dubai, it is immposible to return home with empty suitcases, so a visit to the Al Seef Heritage Souq was a must. The narrow winding lanes of the souq with colourful displays of clothes and accessories on either side were a reflection of the vibrancy of the place. From long printed kaftans to aromatic oudhs, to intricate home décor pieces highlighting the local culture to bundles of carpets, from designer lampshades to small mementos like magnets and hampers of dry fruits, were all over the place to take our pick from. Spending a leisurely time at the souq going over the curios was a good way to spend a day.

Culinary bites

Dubai’s cosmopolitanism and indulgent luxuries in its options of food were well-reflected in the variety of culinary options available in the country. We took our picks from the home- g row n bu r g e r b r a n d , P i c k l w h i c h n o w boasts of several outlets across the city. We picked up t h e i r signature Chicken sando with customised spice and heat levels as per our taste buds. Made with fresh ingredients, the burgers were juicy, saucy, and meaty and yes the heat hit us right through!

The fine-diner, CLAP was not only extravagant in its look and décor but the food was equally delicious. We recommend aiming for their Sushi platter with a variety of tuna and salmon sushi, sashimi, pickled ginger and wasabi. Those with a sweet tooth must not give the dessert platter a pass which had ice cream sundaes, mud-pies, freshly cut fruits and more.

The Time Out Market outside the Dubai Mall can be best described as an assortment under the same roof. From Asian to Japanese, from Portuguese to Mexican, from Chinese to Lebanese, there was a variety to choose from. We settled for the Portuguese chicken roast which was perfectly cooked and succulent but we felt some spices would have elevated the taste.

Cassette Dubai had a completely easy-going and laidback café vibe. We saw several lunch meetings in progress and many who were co-working and gorging on the sumptuous meal. We opted for a range of burgers, salads, baked fish and French fries along with a minty mojito that we sipped while we watched the world go by.

We were floored by the Indian fusion spread at Revelry which took us back to our childhood. From the cocktail menu curated after the seasons of India to the food menu which had authentic Indian flavours but with a global twist, the nostalgia made our day.

With the most unusual name, Somewhere, boasted of a plethora of bohemian fare. From baos to corn salads, from crispy spring rolls to decadent desserts, the dishes with a Middle Eastern touch were truly appealing in presentation and flavour, both.

In Frame: Chaos Karts

To sum up, Dubai is just not a land of sand where one must visit the desert. While the desert activities can be accumulated for winter, there are a range of different activities that can be tried out with family during the summer vacations all within three to four days. From luxury shopping to indoor adventures, from delicious food on your plate to walking around the streets of Dubai soaking in the glamorous night scenes of the city, there’s a lot to do.

Some UAE residents who want to travel to the US for vacations or for business purposes have found a way to get quick visa appointments: they are going to neighbouring Gulf countries to apply for the same.

The residents in the country have to wait at least a year for US visa appointments owing to a large number of applications, travel agents in the UAE told Khaleej Times.

It was because of this inordinate delay that Indian expat Anshil Ponthuveetil Thekkumpurath chose to go to Saudi Arabia instead of applying for an US visa in the UAE.

“In UAE, it was taking 10-12 months – probably even more, but I wanted to get the US visa urgently. So I went to the US Consulate General Al Khobar in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, for a visa appointment. It took me just 7 days to complete the whole process. I got the passport after 7 days with the US stamped on it,” said the UAE resident.

“Interestingly, the US visa was the easiest visa I have obtained so far compared to Schengen or Canadian visas,” said Thekkumpurath.

Ron Packowitz, the country consular coordinator at the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi, had earlier told Khaleej Times that appointments for US visas could be obtained in any country and people could apply from wherever they like.

Shamsheed CV, senior consultant for outbound travel at Wisefox Tourism, too, said applicants had to wait as late as July 2025 for US visa appointments in the UAE.

“We are suggesting people travel to any nearby GCC country to apply to get a visa faster. In Oman, the current waiting time is only three months, 2-3 weeks in Bahrain, and around the same time in Saudi Arabia. If people clear the interview, they can get their passport back in five days and fly back to the UAE. People are going to neighbouring countries to apply for US visas, but a large number of people are still not aware of this option,” he said.

Shamsheed CV added that both individuals as well as families from the UAE are seeking US visas in other Gulf countries.

TP Sudheesh, general manager of Deira Travel and Tourist Agency, said earlier appointments are available in other parts of GCC like Muscat and Saudi Arabia. “A lot of people who want to travel to the US on an urgent basis are choosing this option.”

Mir Wasim Raja, manager for MICE and holidays at Galadari International Travel Services, also acknowledged that people who wish to fly to the US early are going to GCC countries to get visas quickly.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi has advised applicants to arrive at the Consular Section not more than 15 minutes before the scheduled appointment time. Children under 14 are not required to attend visa interviews unless parents or guardians have received explicit instructions to bring them.
