The Founder Is the Fast Food of Biopics

In a bland and forgettable new film, Michael Keaton plays Ray Kroc, the cut-throat businessman behind the McDonald’s franchise.

the founder kitchen tour

Ray Kroc’s story is a distinctly American one; it’s a tale of business success marked by corporate greed, dodgy backroom deals, and an overwhelming desire for sameness. Kroc was the salesman who took a small burger restaurant in San Bernardino, California, franchised it around the country, and turned it into the McDonald’s Corporation—and he only had to disrespect the wishes of the restaurant’s actual founders to do it. It’s a rather bleak rise to prosperity, but an interesting one nonetheless, since so much of Kroc’s skill at spreading McDonald’s around the country relied on his packaging of a fast-food restaurant as a plain, inoffensive monument to American family values.

Unfortunately, The Founder , John Lee Hancock’s new biopic about Kroc’s rise to power in the ’50s and ’60s, is as bland as the burgers the businessman hawked. The film had the chance to subvert the typical bootstrap tale of American triumph, but instead it plays right into that easy narrative, trying to celebrate his business acumen without skirting past his darker misdeeds. The Founder ends up feeling extremely wishy-washy, unable to scrub the nastiness of Kroc’s success but also incapable of confronting it. In the end, it feels too close to the movie you’d imagine Kroc approving of—not exactly a hagiography, but a Wikipedia entry in which all the controversial material is squeezed into one small section at the bottom.

Engineering the Perfect McDonalds Burger, and a Marketing Win

A person lifts a large barbell with smiley faces on either end.

Don’t Wish for Happiness. Work for It.

Tiger Woods stretches his neck as he plays during the final round of the 2009 HSBC Champions golf tournament.

Your Pillows Might Be Killing Your Neck

Kroc is played by Michael Keaton as half-huckster, half-social climber—a try-hard salesman who has a roving eye for business opportunities, much to the despair of his wife Ethel (Laura Dern). When selling milkshake makers to a burger joint in California, Kroc is amazed by the efficiency of their operation, getting a tour from the eponymous McDonald brothers Dick (Nick Offerman) and Mac (John Carroll Lynch). Kroc’s genius, such as it is, mostly lies in understanding how easily the restaurant can be replicated. His riskiest pitch is to the brothers, to allow him to run their franchising operation.

There’s one scene early on that sums up the strange, slightly terrifying appeal of the McDonald brothers’ operation. Before setting up their restaurant, they draw its kitchen, in chalk, on a tennis court and have their employees mimic preparing the meals for customers, acting out each step (ketchup, pickles, fries, milkshakes) with perfect automation, in an eerie factory-floor dance. It’s beautiful, and it’s unsettling—a vision of America’s fast-food future where speed and efficiency will trump restaurant quality. Kroc hears about this and envisions a formula he can plug people into—but Hancock films the whole chalk-drawing scene with airy delight, a light, lilting score accompanying his overhead shots of the restaurant rehearsals.

The Founder ’s script is by Robert D. Siegel, the former editor-in-chief of The Onion , whose previous films Big Fan and The Wrestler focused on the bleak lives of their subjects while never letting go of their core humanity. He never quite achieves this with Kroc—a man whose business canny is impossible to dismiss, but who otherwise is a bit of a blank slate, perhaps befitting a champion of mediocrity. He’s drawn to McDonald’s, as he tells Dick and Mac, because of the All-American quality of its name—free of the limiting gimmickry of a Burger King, easy to project one’s own values onto, a non-threatening place for families to congregate.

Hancock, in turn, has projected his own values onto Kroc, and has turned his subject into another of his dull biopic heroes. Hancock’s previous films include The Blind Side , The Rookie , and Saving Mr. Banks —“true-story” films about people who accomplished great things against all odds, works that declined to do anything more than celebrate their protagonists’ achievements. Hancock is a purveyor of easygoing Hollywood confections, which makes him an especially odd choice for Kroc’s story, the morals of which are anything but easygoing.

Kroc eventually pried the McDonald’s business away from its original founders, expanding it quickly around the country even as Dick, who designed the restaurant’s fast-food system, worried its quality would be diluted as the product got less and less centralized. Hancock plays their disputes like friendly disagreements—grumpy phone calls that eventually need to be sorted out by lawyers—and quickly skates by the more malicious aspects of the story, such as Kroc opening a McDonald’s franchise across the street from the original restaurant to put it out of business. The dissolution of Kroc’s marriage takes place off-screen, as does his affair with Joan (Linda Cardellini), the wife of franchise owner Rollie Smith (Patrick Wilson).

It’s hard to know what Hancock saw in Kroc outside of the roaring success of his business, and The Founder doesn’t give viewers more than that. What should be a terrifically complicated work ends up a neatly packaged, easily disposable piece of Oscar bait. It’s a thin gruel, best summed up by the milkshake substitute Kroc hits upon as a cost-cutting measure for his growing corporation. Just take water, add powdered milk, and stir: It looks like the real thing, and tastes near enough. The Founder is the fast-food dinner of biopics—20 minutes after you eat it, you’re already hungry again.

The Surprising Veggie Adam Levine Always Keeps in His Massive Walk-in Fridge

The former  The Voice  coach is an avid consumer of this healthy selection.

the founder kitchen tour

Adam Levine knows how to stay on top of his nutrition.

How to Watch

Watch  The Voice Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

In a recent interview with Men's Health , the former  The Voice   coach (Seasons 1-16) gave details about his diet. After walking us through his morning kitchen routine, Levine gave us a glimpse of his  massive  walk-in refrigerator.

"This is my favorite thing," he proudly told the camera, before the host said that it is "the biggest fridge that [they've] ever seen on the show."

What's in Adam Levine's massive walk-in fridge

Then, Levine showed us the specific item that he  always  has in his fridge: Peppers.

The singer proudly held up a package of bell peppers, noting their nutritious vitamin C value. "I think those are the best things you can put in your body everyday," he said.

RELATED: Adam Levine Actually Crashed Weddings for Maroon 5's "Sugar" Music Video (DETAILS)

Levine also talked about how his relationship with his beloved peppers has evolved.

"You can eat anything you want when you're younger, and then all of a sudden you can't. So I just kind of try to be conscious of things I put in my body, not overdo it, not overthink it, but be smart of it. Lots of veggies, things I didn't use to love, cause who likes veggies when they're young? But now I love veggies. It's funny."

He may have a song called "Sugar," but he sure is a fan of his veggies.

Adam Levine on  The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Aside from being a pepper enthusiast, Levine is of course known for being the frontman of the mega popular band Maroon 5 . When Levine appeared on  The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon  in April, he dropped exciting news: They're  working on new music .

"You've been hinting that you guys are in the studio working on something — and finally, this year you're releasing the new music," said Jimmy Fallon .

Adam Levine on the red carpet for the 10th Annual Breakthrough Prize Ceremony

"It's coming," Levine confirmed. "You know, I think that for the first time in about 13 years, I've decided to kind of take the reins back for the songwriting part of it, and make sure that all the ideas come from either myself or the band. So we're not going to have any real co-writes."

He described the upcoming music as a full circle moment for the group whose original members have been making music together since 1994, first rising to fame with their 2002 debut album,  Songs About Jane.

"And, you know, the ideas are coming straight from the nucleus of Maroon 5, which I think is going to make it sound a lot like it did in the very, very beginning," Levine continued. "So, I'm  so  excited about what's happening right now."

WASHINGTON — Their calling was to offer a beacon of humanity to people trapped in desperate conditions, bringing food to communities devastated by war and disaster. On Thursday, the World Central Kitchen community convened to celebrate the seven aid workers, three weeks after they were killed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza .

"They risked everything to feed people they did not know – and would never meet," said chef José Andrés, the founder of World Central Kitchen, as he addressed those gathered at the National Cathedral. "In the worst moments, the best of humanity shows up."

Andrés listed their names: Palestinian Saifeddin "Safi" Issam Ayad Abutaha; John Chapman of Britain; Jacob Flickinger of the U.S. and Canada; Lalzawmi "Zomi" Frankcom of Australia; Britons James Henderson and James Kirby; and Damian Sobol of Poland.

"They were the best of humanity," he said. "Their example should inspire us to do better – to be better."

The interfaith service wasn't open to the public, but video was streamed online . Organizers said 560 people attended — a mix of World Central Kitchen staff and workers from other humanitarian organizations, U.S. government officials and diplomats from more than 30 nations.

Each of the World Central Kitchen workers had been spurred to action in response to calamity — a volcanic eruption, a war, an earthquake, Andrés said.

His words faltered with emotion as he spoke of Frankcom.

"It always felt, from the start, that she embodied our spirit and purpose," he said. "She gave joy to others, even more than she gave food. Dancing, singing, playing with children. .... Her compassion and curiosity were infectious."

The service's officiants included the Very Rev. Randolph Marshall Hollerith, the cathedral's dean, and the Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. Also speaking: Rabbi Susan N. Shankman, senior rabbi of the Washington Hebrew Congregation, and Imam Talib M. Shareef, imam and president of Masjid Muhammad, the Nation's Mosque in Washington.

Behind the group stood the choir — and behind them, flags representing the seven aid workers' homelands.

World Central Kitchen Founder José Andrés speaks Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral during an interfaith memorial service for the seven workers from the group who were killed in Gaza.

The workers were heroes, Andrés said. He cited inspiration from John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath .

"Wherever there's a fight so hungry people can eat, I'll be there," he said, referring to the famous speech by the character Tom Joad. "The seven souls we mourn today were there, so that hungry people could eat."

Attendees filled the main section of the cathedral's nave and its side transepts for the service, which included remembrances of the slain humanitarians, readings from Jewish, Muslim and Christian traditions and prayers for peace. Musicians performing include cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

The gathering included second gentleman Doug Emhoff, the husband of Vice President Harris, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell.

As of early April, at least 224 humanitarian workers had been killed in the Israel-Hamas war that began last October. According to the U.N. Security Council , the figure is "more than three times as many humanitarian aid workers killed in any single conflict recorded in a single year."

"Our losses may seem small," Andrés said, compared to other workers killed, the more than 34,000 Palestinians that the Gaza Ministry of Health says have died, and and some 1,200 Israelis killed by Hamas.

"But each of these people leave behind loved ones, who will always have them in their hearts," he added.

Israel has apologized for the attack that killed the seven workers, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying his country "deeply regrets the tragic incident."

The Israeli military says the incident violated its protocols , punishing those responsible. But World Central Kitchen says that's not enough, calling for an independent investigation and noting Israel's acknowledgement that its aid team had followed established communications procedures.

"The root cause of the unjustified rocket fire on our convoy is the severe lack of food in Gaza," the charity said . "Israel needs to dramatically increase the volume of food and medicine traveling by land if it is serious about supporting humanitarian aid."

In his remarks at the remembrance service, Andrés said the world's leaders should be expected to live by the same standards set by the slain aid workers.

"When disaster strikes, it's easy to see the dark and never the light," he said. "But the reality is this: The light will always shine through."

In a powerful moment in his speech, Andrés asked all of the current and former World Central Kitchen workers at the service to stand up — and as they did so, other attendees broke into loud and sustained applause.

He praised the workers for refusing to be indifferent to suffering, and insisting on helping others, even if it places them in great peril.

"The dishes we cook and deliver are not just ingredients, or calories," he said. "A plate of food is a plate of hope. A message that someone, somewhere, cares for you."

Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City)

  • Guide to Russia

What can you do at Moscow City?

  • Dine in style: Moscow City is home to 100+ cafes and restaurants, including Europe’s highest restaurant and ice-cream shop
  • See Moscow like never before: Ascend to one of Moscow City’s observation decks for an unparalleled panorama of Moscow
  • Admire world-class architecture: Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers has distinctive architecture and design

Moscow City is a multifunctional complex in the west of Moscow, which has come to represent the booming business of Russia’s capital. Its skyscrapers enrich Moscow’s skyline, contrasting the medieval cupolas and Stalinist high-rises. Visitors to Moscow City can enjoy entertainment high in the sky, as the complex is home not just to offices, but to restaurants, cinemas, viewing platforms, and museums.

History of Moscow City

Moscow City was first conceived in 1991 by honoured Soviet architect Boris Tkhor, who proposed to construct a business center in Moscow. It would be complete with gleaming skyscrapers rivalling those of New York and London, to reflect the new life and growing ambitions of post-Soviet Russia.

The chosen site was a stone quarry and disused industrial zone in western Moscow, in between the Third Ring Road and Moskva River. Initially, the territory was divided into 20 sections arranged in a horseshoe shape around a central zone. The skyscrapers would increase in height as they spiralled around the central section, with shorter structures built on the waterfront to give the taller buildings behind a view of the river.

Architect Gennady Sirota, who contributed to iconic projects such as the Olympic Sports Complex on Prospekt Mira, was selected as the chief architect, and many other world-famous architects were attracted to Moscow to realise their visions in Moscow City.

What can you see and do at Moscow City?

Where Moscow’s cityscape was once dominated by Stalin’s Seven Sisters skyscrapers , this is no more. Moscow City is home to eight of Russia’s ten tallest buildings, six of which exceed 300 metres in height. More buildings are still under construction there today, including the One Tower (which will be Europe’s second-tallest building). Once completed, Moscow City will comprise more than 20 innovative structures.

Each of Moscow City’s skyscrapers was designed by its own architect, lending the cluster of skyscrapers a unique appearance. Aside from being a site of architectural wonder, Moscow City is a place for leisure and entertainment with over 100 cafes and restaurants, exhibition spaces, cinemas, viewing platforms, and more.

Federation Tower

  • East Tower: 374m, 97 floors; West Tower: 243m, 63 floors
  • Completed in 2017
  • Architects: Sergey Tchoban and Peter Schweger

The East Federation Tower is the tallest building in Moscow, and the second-tallest building in Europe after the Lakhta Centre in St Petersburg. Visitors can enjoy a luxurious meal of seafood, truffles or steak at restaurant ‘Sixty’ on the 62nd floor of the West Tower, or visit Europe’s highest observation deck, ‘Panorama 360’, on the 89th floor of the East Tower.

Did you know? The ice cream and chocolate shop on the 360 observation deck are the highest in the world!

  • South Tower: 354m, 85 floors; North Tower: 254m, 49 floors
  • Completed in 2015
  • Architect: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP

The South OKO Tower is the third-tallest building in Russia and Europe. Here, you can visit ‘Ruski’ to dine on hearty Russian cuisine cooked on a real Russian stove, and have a drink in the ice bar. Alternatively, visit restaurant, nightclub and performance space ‘Birds’; the restaurant is the highest in Europe, situated on the 86th floor roof terrace alongside an observation deck. The OKO Towers are also home to karaoke club ‘City Voice’.

Did you know? Underneath OKO Towers is the largest underground parking in Europe, with 16 levels and 3,400 parking spaces.

Mercury Tower

  • 339m tall, 75 floors
  • Architects : Mikhail Posokhin, Frank Williams, Gennady Sirota

Another multifunctional skyscraper, which was designed as the first truly ‘green’ building in Moscow. The Mercury Tower has a distinct geometric shape and copper-coloured glazing, and was the tallest building in Europe upon completion. Visit ‘More i myaso’ (Sea and meat) on the first floor of the tower to enjoy European and Mediterranean cuisine whilst surrounded by greenery. On the 2nd and 40th floors a modern art gallery, the ‘ILONA-K artspace’, has just opened.

City of Capitals

  • Moscow Tower: 302m, 76 floors; St Petersburg Tower: 257m, 65 floors
  • Completed in 2009
  • Architect: Bureau NBBJ

The unique geometric design of the City of Capitals towers resembles stacks of rotating blocks, and is rooted in Constructivism of the early Soviet period (many Soviet Constructivist buildings can be found in Moscow). Visitors to the Moscow Tower can enjoy a range of cuisines – traditional Italian dishes on the summer terrace of ‘Tutto Bene’, Panasian cuisine in the tropical luxury of the ‘Bamboo Bar’ on the 1st floor’, and poke or smoothie bowls at ‘Soul in the Bowl’ cafe on the 80th floor.

Tower on the Embankment

  • Tower A: 84m; Tower B:127m; Tower C: 268m, 61 floors
  • Completed in 2007
  • Architects: Vehbi Inan and Olcay Erturk

After completion, the Tower on the Embankment was the tallest building in Europe, and is now the 13th tallest. It houses the headquarters of several large Russian and international  companies, including IBM and KPMG. There are two cafes located on the 1st floor of Tower C – self-service café ‘Obed Bufet’ (Lunch Buffet) and Bakery Chain ‘Khleb Nasushchny’ (Daily Bread).

Evolution Tower

  • 255m tall, 54 floors
  • Architects: Philip Nikandrov and RMJM Scotland Ltd

Evolution is Moscow City’s most recognisable tower, and the 11th tallest building in Russia. Its façade is a true architectural marvel, comprising continuous strips of curved glazing spiralling high into  the sky. According to the architect, Philip Nikandrov, the spiral shape of the tower honours centuries of architectural design in Russia, from the onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral to Vladimir Shukhov’s Tatlin Tower, a masterpiece of Constructivist design. Outside the Evolution tower is a landscaped terrace and pedestrian zone descending to the Presnenskaya Embankment, which was also designed by Nikandrov.

Did you know? Moscow’s largest wedding palace was supposed to be built on the site of the Evolution tower, though the project was abandoned.

  • 239m tall, 60 floors
  • Completed in 2011

Imperia’s interesting design has a curved roof and an arched glass façade. Inside the tower are various cafes including ‘City Friends’ for all-day breakfasts and light lunches, ‘Mama in the City’ for simple meals of Russian cuisine, and ‘abc kitchen’ for European and Indian-inspired dishes. Alternatively, visit ‘High Bar’ on the 56th floor for cocktails with a view. In Imperia you’ll also find the Museum of High-Rise Construction in Moscow (suitably located on the 56th floor), and the Camera Immersive Theatre.

Did you know? Inside Vystavochnaya metro station is the Metro Museum , dedicated to the history of the beautiful Moscow Metro!

  • 130m tall, 26 floors
  • Completed in 2001
  • Architect: Boris Tkhor

Tower 2000 was Moscow City’s first tower. It stands on the opposite bank of the Moskva River, and houses a viewing platform from which visitors can admire an unparalleled panorama of Moscow City. The Bagration Bridge reaches across the river from the tower to Moscow City, and underneath are piers from where you can take boat trips.

Afimall is Moscow’s largest entertainment and shopping complex, home to 450 shops, cafes and restaurants, a cinema, and a virtual-reality game park. The shopping centre is located in the central section of Moscow City, and a cinema and concert hall are currently under construction there.

Park Krasnaya Presnya: This park belonged to the Studenets estate of the Gagarin princes. It is a monument of 18th and 19th century landscaping, with Dutch ponds, ornate bridges, and tree-lined alleys. There are also sports facilities, sports equipment rental, and cafes.

Alicia Keys Reacts to Her Broadway Musical 'Hell's Kitchen' Getting the Most Tony Nominations This Year!

Alicia Keys is speaking out after making Broadway history with her new musical Hell’s Kitchen .

The musical features a score written by Alicia , including many of her greatest hits and some new songs written for the show. The story is loosely based on the Grammy winner’s childhood growing up in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood in a building full of artists.

The 2024 Tony Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday (April 30) and Hell’s Kitchen is the most-nominated musical of the year with 13 nods.

Head inside to check out Alicia’s reaction to the nominations…

“I kind of lost it, kind of freaked out, and I was super excited, particularly that all of the collaborators on this project are seeing so much love and so much greatness for their brilliance. I’m so excited for everybody and for Hell’s Kitchen . It’s just like, ‘Whoa!,’” she told The Hollywood Reporter .

Nominations included Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, and four acting noms for the four main stars: newcomer Maleah Joi Moon , Shoshana Bean , Kecia Lewis , and Brandon Victor Dixon .

On the process of making a musical, Alicia said, “I’ve learned that the people that you collaborate with are so important and the way that each person brings something special to the process from sound design, set design, costume design, obviously, our magnificent director and the book writer, the stage manager and every single person that’s a part of this moving art installation is so important, and they all hold a piece of the energy that gets transferred to those who come and see it.”

She added, “And so I feel like what I’ve learned is that the energy around it, the energy around anything that one creates or is a part of is almost 90 percent part of why it resonates in the way that it does. And so I feel like that’s what I’m receiving. And also the love from the theater community. There’s something special about the veterans and us combining this new freshness with the veteran wisdom, that I think has created a very special way to express this.”
