Graphite Designs Tour AD DI Shaft Review

50 Words or Less

The Graphite Designs Tour AD DI shaft feels great and put up some spectacular numbers.  Easy to see why it’s such a hit on the PGA Tour.

Check out the low launch, low spin Tour AD VF HERE

Introduction

The goal of any manufacturer is to build hype around their product organically.  Smothering the consumer with ads is fine, but it’s nothing compared to the consumer seeing all of their friends talking about and using a product.  That latter scenario is what seemed to happen overnight with the Graphite Designs Tour AD DI shaft.

From Charles Howell III to Tiger Woods to Adam Scott, it felt like every PGA Tour pro was playing the orange “Deep Impact,” and every forum was chattering about it.  The momentum continues to the 2016-2017 season as Hideki Matsuyama uses one in his driver to stack up wins.  We put this tour-proven shaft through the paces to see how it performs for those of us without PGA Tour swings.

Love the AD DI but want something new?  Check out the Graphite Design Tour AD UB HERE

Graphite Designs has a formula for the graphics of their Tour AD shafts, and the DI doesn’t vary from it.  It’s primarily one solid color with some rings in the mid-butt area and very simple graphics .  While some of the colors are bold, the graphics are no nonsense.

Unlike most of their line up, the AD DI does come in two flavors: black and the signature orange .  Go stealth or stand out, the choice is yours.

Somehow I missed out on the AD DI craze a couple years ago, but after one swing I immediately understood what all the fuss was about.  This shaft has a tremendous kick to it, but it never feels out of control.  The company’s description is “Medium” in the butt and mid and “Stiff” in the tip, which matches my assessment exactly.  You get a smooth, powerful kick through impact, but the tip doesn’t feel loose or torque-y, even on mishits.

As an aside, kudos to Graphite Designs for taking all the voodoo out of shaft descriptions.  For each of their shafts, they describe the butt, mid, and tip sections on a scale that ranges from “Very Stiff” to “Soft.”  This makes it easy to figure out what you might like and what you want to try next.

Performance

When I love the feel of a shaft, chances are its going to perform well for me.  That was certainly the case with the Graphite Designs AD DI.

I started my testing with the stiff flex version of the AD DI.  The smooth kick made me feel like I was delivering effortless power to the ball, and the results were very solid.  When I bumped up to the X flex, things got even better.  The kick was slightly less pronounced, as you’d expect, but the consistency of the results was through the roof.  Every shot was near the center of the face, and the monitor was showing the same push-draw time after time .

For players who haven’t hit Graphite Designs shafts and can’t make use of their feel chart, I would say that the AD DI is a mix of the Diamana Blue and White shafts.  It has the smooth feel and pronounced kick of the blue with the strong tip of the white.  For me, that adds up to great consistency with tremendous feel .

graphite-designs-ad-di_0033

Prior to this review, my experience with  Graphite Designs  shafts had been minimal, but now the AD DI is making a serious push to go in the bag.  It blends some of the best attributes of my favorite shafts, and the performance simply can’t be argued with.  Waiting to get this into play is just one more reason that this winter is going to feel really long.

First of all, I thank you for your website. Passionate about golf and about gear of golf , you are for me , the website number one on the subject .

I particularly appreciated your review of the ADDI shaft. GRAPHITE DESIGN being one of my favorite trademarks. I hope that others tests of the range are going to follow. Thank you again ! Excuse-me for my broken English. Patrick

' src=

Hey Matt, always enjoy reading your reviews. This GD Tour AD DI is a shaft I keep hearing about and seeing in clubs over the years. It was no surprise to hear you were impressed by it, but it was really interesting to see that you were concentrating on the proper flex for yourself(S vs. XS). With that said, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the Stiff shaft. I know you will ultimately fall back on getting fit….understood. But given what you experienced for yourself, which appeared to be that you need the XS shaft for your swing speed to maximize accuracy, what would you venture the S flex would be good for in terms of swing speed? Assuming a smooth swing and 102-103 mph….S flex? Once again, I know a fitting is absolutely a must, but what swing speed range do you think might benefit best from the S flex AD DI shaft?

' src=

The thing that impressed me about the AD DI is that I could have been very happy playing the S, I just preferred the shot shape with the X. The S is also so smooth, I think it could work all the way down to, perhaps 95 MPH. Around 100 MPH is probably the sweet spot.

' src=

Matt, surprised it has taken so long to try out this iconic shaft. I am 100 SS and the GD DI 60 Stiff is the shaft I keep coming back to. Best feel yet never seems overpowered. Also agreed with the comment that it sits between the Diamana Blue and White. More stable than the Blue and more feel than the White.

And if you want that next level of stiffness / low ball flight try the BB. I noticed Kaymer just moved from DI to BB in driver, but kept DI in other woods. It also comes in Black which I think was a special order/ request from Adam Scott a few years back.

First of all I thank you for your site !

For me you are the number one ! I particularly appreciated your review of the ADDI ; GD being one of my favorites trademarks I hope that others tests of the range are going to follow

thank you again Patrick ( paris)

We will have a review of the AD TP coming soon and hopefully more to follow after that. Any models in particular that you’re interested in?

Thank you Matt !

a review of the AD TP would be perfect ! AD MT too !

' src=

Thanks, Matt. As it is often said the shaft is the “engine” of the club and the key to proper fitting. For us mere mortals, may I presume that this shaft also comes in a “Regular” form for slower swing speeds? Thanks again. Steve

Yes, it’s available in R2 (senior) through X.

' src=

I have the AD DI-7s shaft in my TaylorMade 2017 M2 3 wood. It’s the best club I’ve ever owned. My swing speed is around 105mph, yet I feel as if however hard I swing with this shaft, it just copes and continues to deliver. The feel is exquisite. Now all I have to do is see if I can find a driver to put this shaft into!

' src=

Hi Matt, I have just purchased a Ping G400 Max Driver…Reg stock stand.shaft. I am 70 yo on 18 h/c. Would I benefit from fitting an Ad Di Shaft ? In a regular form. My swing speed is around 90 to100. Can I buy in Australia?

I’m not sure who distributes Graphite Design in Australia.

There’s no inherent reason why the AD DI would be better than the stock PING shaft. The only way it would be better is if it’s a better fit for your swing, which you could find out by working with a high quality club fitter.

' src=

Love the podcast!

Are these averages from the S or X flex?

This was a while back but I believe the X was the better fit.

' src=

What was your ball flight with the S?

I’m not going to be able to reliably tell you any more than is in the review, this was written quite a while back.

' src=

Great review. How would you compare this shaft to the Tensei series? Also, in the past have you ever put together a shaft comparison chart?

There are a lot of different profiles in the Tensei series, but overall both the Tensei and Graphite Designs shafts are consistent and high quality. I have not put together a shaft comparison chart because we encourage everyone to be fit.

' src=

Hi Matt, I have the choice of the Di 60g stiff or VENTUS Black 6 60g in New St200 G, VENTUS is newer to market, what do you think.?

I would suggest getting fit and finding the best option for your swing. If you want to know what fits my swing, you can see my WITB here: https://pluggedingolf.com/about/matt-saternus/matts-whats-in-the-bag/

' src=

Hey Matt, Hopefully you still remember the feel of this shaft since it was reviewed a number of years ago…. In the review you stated that the feel was somewhere between Diamana BF and DF. Now I am curious to know whether the feel of the AD DI is similar to the Diamana ZF in your experience since the ZF is considered to be in between DF and BF regarding feel. I know you did the review on the ZF already but maybe I am just looking for a confirmation. Hope you can answer my question, thanks!

Overall, yes, they’re somewhat similar.

' src=

would you recommend AD_D1 7x for a senior who’s swing speed is down?

A 70 gram X flex is not something I would recommend for someone whose speed is going down, unless it’s going down from a truly elite level.

' src=

Are you able to share what head(s) you had conducted this shaft review with? As always appreciate you and plugged in.

Thanks, Mike

I always test with my gamer, the PING G425 Max.

' src=

I demoed the DI-6s with a fitter a while back and he thought it was my best fit from what we had available. However my club head SS is only mid, maybe high 90s, which according to GD suggests a stiff- regular. The fitter doesn’t have a SR with a Ping tip to demo. I’m playing a Ping tour 65 stiff ok right now but the DI was better.

If anything, the DI-6 stiff plays smoother/less demanding than the Ping tour stiff, true? Apparently the DI-6s might play ok down to mid 90s as you mentioned? Otoh worst case, a stiff-regular wouldn’t be flimsy, true?

Thanks for any thoughts…$370 shaft, good grief:-)

Yes, I think the AD-DI will feel softer/smoother than the PING Tour in the same flex. Personally, I would be hesitant to buy anything I hadn’t tested, especially for $370. If you thought the stiff felt good and it worked well, I would stick with that rather than taking a chance on the SR.

' src=

Does anyone have experience with the 105x hybrid/driving iron shaft? Thoughts? Is it “too stiff”?

' src=

Good morning! I wanted to see if you could share a thought or two comparing the Tour AD DI vs the Ventus TR Red. Thanks

I have a full review of the Ventus TR Red here: https://pluggedingolf.com/fujikura-ventus-tr-red-shaft-review/

' src=

Matt I have these with my Itobori cavity back irons. When bought this set-up I wasn’t quite ready for the cavity back irons. After alot of practice and lessons… Great shaft they load up perfectly with my swing making me look better than I am…I have standards lofts not jack up.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Shaft

We usually try to reserve judgment of a shaft until later in the review.

But this time, we’re breaking character by claiming in the introduction that the Graphite Design Tour AD DI is a truly remarkable shaft.

We’ll reserve the details for later in the review but we will say that we can clearly see why some of the most prolific Tour Pros game these shafts.

If you haven’t considered the Graphite Design Tour AD DI shaft for your woods you need to read this review and then go get a fitting.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Shaft Overview

Let’s start with looks.

It appears as though Graphite design puts all their time and effort into engineering and saves money on their design department.

The shaft, which is available in a black or orange color scheme, looks busy. The midsection is lousy with logos and lettering.

We prefer the black and white finish to the gaudy orange and white color scheme.

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI is available in a dizzying array of weights and flexes.

The weight ranges from 54g to 97g. Graphite Design seemingly wanted to appeal to as many golfers as possible and they have succeeded.

No matter what your swing speed is, you can pick up a Graphite Design Tour AD DI shaft in a weight that works for you.

The feel of this shaft is definitely active. The kick point is advertised as mid; but we would actually say that it is a bit closer to the butt than true mid.

Why is the  Graphite Design Tour AD DI So Popular?

When a shaft is used by players like Tiger Woods, it’s going to get some attention.

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI has been used by some of the biggest names in golf; but there are weights and flexes for us mortals too.

How Does the Graphite Design Tour AD DI Perform?

Depending on which weight class you choose, you’re either going to get a high or mid launch from this shaft.

The amazing thing about it though is that even the lightest version of the Graphite Design Tour AD DI can produce low spin rates.

In our test session, we never saw the spin rates exceed 2000 RPM’s. For the most part, spin was relegated to the 1800-1900 RPM range.

The stiff tip section also kept dispersion very tight. Our offline divergence never drifted into the double-digit (yards) range.

Carry distance was good too. After three swings each, we were averaging 268.8 yards. The Graphite Design Tour AD DI ticked nearly all of the boxes for us.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Shaft Specs

What flexes are available what swing speeds do they suit.

Lite flex is suitable for 71-85 MPH swingers.

Regular flex is good for 86-95 MPH swingers. Players in the 92-98 MPH range should check out the Graphite Design Tour AD DI in stiff/regular flex.

Stiff flex may be suitable for players in the 96-105 MPH range. Extra stiff is for players in the 100-105 MPH range. Tour extra stiff should work for players swinging their driver 110+ MPH.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI is available in a wide variety of weights.

If you’re in the 70-85 MPH swing speed range, you’re probably going to want to stay between 54 and 64 grams.

86-95 MPH swingers will want to stay within the 75-85 gram weight class. For 96+ MPH swingers, there is the 86-97 gram weight class.

Why is it So Good?

Design Tour AD DI Shaft1

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI is a rare combination of active profile, long carry distance, low spin rates and tight dispersion.

This is a combination that works for almost every kind of player.

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI is an amazing shaft because it will improve your drive distance while delivering a very smooth, satisfying feel.

And while it makes it easy to take your most powerful swing, it keeps the ball on-line.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI First Impressions

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Shaft2

Our first impression of the Graphite Design Tour AD DI was that it felt very smooth.

While we wouldn’t say it is as smooth as the Mitsubishi Tensei shafts, it is still amazingly fluid for having such an active profile.

Key Features & Performance

The Graphite Design Tour AD DI utilizes aerospace-grade, high modulus 50-ton carbon fiber in order to stiffen the tip section.

While the mid and butt sections are of medium stiffness, the tip is stiff in order to promote acute club head control.

This is part of what produces such tight shot dispersion.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Driver Review

When plugged into our driver, the Graphite Design Tour AD DI felt incredibly easy and smooth to swing.

It can stand up to a really heavy load and the release feels phenomenally fluid. The dispersion is tight enough to keep you out of the trees but there is also some workability for better players.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Fairway Wood Review

When we plugged the Graphite Design Tour AD DI into a 3-wood, we still got tight dispersion whether we were swinging from the box or off the deck.

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Pros & Cons

  • Wide variety of weights
  • Good for fast or slow swingers
  • Tight dispersion
  • Mid/high launch
  • It’s very expensive

Graphite Design Tour AD DI Shaft

Overall Score: 98/100

Who Should Buy it?

Firstly, you’ll need deep pockets to score the Graphite Design Tour AD DI.

We’ve not seen it retail for any less than $200 (new). But in this case, you get what you pay for. The Graphite Design Tour AD DI is a phenomenal shaft that can work for all swing speeds and tempos.

Shaft Test: Graphite Design’s new Tour AD-TP versus the famous Tour AD-DI

tour ad di 5r

With a similar profile to the company’s famous Tour AD-DI shaft, and a few new technologies for a slightly different ball flight, Graphite Design’s new Tour AD-TP shaft will surely entice a legion of high-spin golfers.

The new shafts are made for a mid launch and low spin rates, according to Graphite Design’s website, while the Tour AD-DI shafts are made for mid/high to high launch angles and low to low/mid spin rates. Certainly, they are in the same wheelhouse, but for anyone looking to create a slightly more penetrating ball flight with lower launch and lower spin, the new shaft could be their winning ticket.

Tour_AD_TP_Hero

To accomplish its performance, the AD-TP shafts are made with a faster taper rate from the lower-mid section to the tip of the shaft, and use an all-new graphite material from Toray Industries called T1100G carbon fiber pre-preg. They also use Toray’s Nanoalloy technology in the tip section, which was first introduced in Graphite Design’s Tour AD-DI. It help golfers gain more control of the club face by resisting torque.  Read more about the Tour AD-TP shaft’s tech here .

Here’s the bend profile of the Tour AD-TP shafts, according to Graphite Design’s website:

GraphiteDesignTourADshafts

And here’s how the Tour AD-TP shafts stack up versus the other Tour AD shafts:

Screen Shot 2016-10-26 at 12.13.37 PM

As you can see, the Tour AD-TP (top row) compared to the Tour AD-DI (bottom row) will have a firmer mid and butt section, but will also have the familiar stiff tip section.

Personally, I’ve tested just about every new mainstream driver shaft that’s come out in the past three years, and I just haven’t been able to find something that matches my swing like the Tour AD-DI. As a golfer who fights a nasty hook and too much spin, it’s the stiffness and stability of the tip of the shaft that makes me comfortable enough to “go at it.” I’m also a Mets fan, so I like the orange color.

Tour_AD-DI_ORange

But for whatever reason, my golfing brain finds other shafts to load and unload way differently, either forcing me to flip or block drives, leading to tragic results. So although I often test the latest and greatest golf shafts for you, the GolfWRX readers, I’ve all but given up on other shafts making it into my gamer driver. Yes, other shafts have given me “more optimal” numbers in a Trackman environment, but there’s nothing optimal about feeling like you’re going to duck hook the ball off the planet with OB stakes left.

When Graphite Design announced a new shaft with a similar profile that’s made to create a slightly more penetrating trajectory, however, I’ll admit I was excited to try it. Let’s see how the numbers played out.

The Numbers

AD_TP_DI_7X

I tested my Tour AD-DI gamer shaft (45.5 inches, tipped 1 inch) against a Tour AD-TP shaft (45.5 inches, untipped) and a Tour AD-TP shaft (45.5 inches, tipped 1 inch) in a TaylorMade M1 460 head (10.5 degrees) set to neutral. Yes, I have a bit more swing speed in the tank than displayed below, but it’s also late October and I don’t want to have a blown out back all winter. I conducted my testing at the Launch Pad at Carl’s Golfland on TrackMan 4 using premium golf balls.

GDDriverShafts20162_arrows

Magenta = Tour AD-TP (tipped 1 inch)

Observations

— Shots with the un-tipped shaft trended to the right. It felt like the face was opening on the downswing and I couldn’t turn my shots over. The data solidifies for me that performance matches my feel, and that I do indeed need a tipped shaft.

— The AD-DI shaft had the highest spin (2953 rpm), highest landing angle, most height (122.1 feet) and launched the highest (13.7 degrees).

— The AD-TP (tipped 1 inch) carried 4.9 yards shorter than the Tour AD-DI, but went 3.7 yards longer in total. This shows how much more penetrating the ball flight with a AD-TP shaft can be.

— Spin rate dropped from 2953 rpm with the Tour AD-DI (tipped 1 inch) to 2460 rpm with the AD-TP (tipped 1 inch).

— With nearly identical clubhead speed, ball speed and smash factors, it’s clear the Tour AD-TP was offering better numbers and tighter dispersion for me.

The Takeaway

Accuracy_and_Distance

The Graphite Design Tour AD-TP shaft is currently selling for $500 at retail. Based on the improvement I saw in my numbers, I would say that the new shaft is worth the value for my swing. The profile and new materials are a match for me in regards to ball flight characteristics and feel. I would describe the feel as “smooth-stiff, with a stable tip.”

Of course, it’s important to undergo a proper fitting, as you saw that the un-tipped version of the Tour AD-GP shaft was giving me fits. But, if you’re like me and struggle with high spin rates and inconsistency, the Tour AD-TP shaft may help you find more accuracy… and a bit more distance, too.

Andrew, the author of this review, comments about hitting duck hooks because that is his miss when he uses a shaft that doesn’t “fit” his swing style. It is the same issue I fight. The fact he has peppered the right side of the grid would be comforting for him. All in all, Andrew fits the new TP shaft pretty well.

Some shafts get progressively weaker to the tip (Rogue, AD-DI), many increase stiffness into the tip (most other GD tour AD models, Kuro Kage) To assume all shafts need to be tipped just seems uninformed. Tipping off stiffness in a shaft like a AD-BB is just going to lower the kick point and give you a softer tip; exact opposite of tipping a AD-DI.

tour ad di 5r

Oct 30, 2016 at 11:05 pm

Wow the author tried really hard to say this is better. The chart looks pretty much the same for all three shafts as far as landing zone. Just one leftward (I’m guess more of a hook) shot skewed the oval left. Unless he’s a left hander, none of his shots were hooks, rather either push or slices. Strange for him to say that he’s fighting a hook when he didn’t hit any.

The real difference does seem to be one offering more roll and one more carry due to launch angle changes I’m guessing due to the stiffer mid and butt sections. Worth it? The argument seems a bit thin.

Clanton on his iron setup:  “I love the blades with the low irons because I can kind of feel a little more around the greens, and if I have a little feely shot from like 150 I can hit a 7 iron there,” Clanton said. “It’s one of those things where I like to feel a little more with the lower irons. Then with the upper irons I like a little bit more forgiveness, especially when you’re hitting it from 210. You don’t really want a blade looking down at the ground, so it’s been a great setup for awhile.”

Clanton on his TaylorMade BRNR Mini Driver:   “My favorite club in my bag is my BRNR Mini Driver. This club has been a life saver off the tee, and off the deck, as well…the first week I ever put it in was actually at Cherry Hills for the U.S. Am. I think it was literally right when they came out with the Mini Driver, and a bunch of my teammates said I never liked 3-wood because I never hit it, and it was true. I hit this [mini driver] off the deck a couple times and it flew perfect. Then I was like, ‘Let’s hit it off the tee,’ and it was flying 285-290 off the tee. I was like this thing is pretty sweet. I’ve kept it in the bag ever since then, and no matter if it’s off a tight lie out of the rough, anything, it’s been awesome. I think it’s probably one of the better clubs I’ve ever received from TaylorMade.

“…I could take out the driver and have the BRNR in and still play well all week. It’s just one of those golf clubs you can hit it off the tee and still hit it far, I can draw it, cut it, hit it low, hit it high. It’s definitely one of my favorites for sure… I don’t think it’ll ever come out of the bag. I really don’t. It’s one of those golf clubs that I absolutely love.”

REVIEW: Graphite Design Tour AD DI Shaft

tour ad di 5r

This shaft was available for some time, at least to tour players, but didn’t really makes its splash until TW put it in play for his first tournament back after his 5 month indiscretion induced vacation.  While Tiger didn’t win the tournament, he had decent driving statistics for that week.

But again, just because a big name player put this shaft in play, doesn’t mean the rest of us can hit it.  This shaft however will appeal to many players, both low handicaps and even higher handicaps.  It is not a super low launch, no spin shaft that most golfers can’t get off the ground, but this is a mid/high launch shaft with low spin.

So some of the basics; it is an orange and white shaft with just a touch of Irish green on the bands.  It comes in a number of different weight and flex options.  I did the DI-7s in an I-mix tip.  Now typically I play a stiff flex, but Graphite designs shafts always seem to run a touch soft, so I tipped mine an extra ½”.  It worked out very well.

One area that Graphite design has always been known for is their incredibly smooth feeling.  The DI was no different.  It has a great controlled smooth feeling from start to finish.  There was no whippy feeling or loose feeling, but not even a touch of boardiness.  It just felt like you knew where the shaft was and what it was doing for the entire swing.

On the course I found this to be long and straight with highball flight yet low spin for roll out.  I had great confidence in this shaft and it resulted in long accurate drives.

Graphite Design set the bar high with the name, and delivered excellent results.  This really does have deep impact on the ball and where it lands so far down the fairway.

Graphite Designs AD DI Shaft - Review

Matt Saternus

DI (1).JPG

Introduction

This is the shaft that Tiger Woods uses in his driver. What more introduction is necessary…it must be awesome, right? There's no question that the Graphite Designs AD-DI shaft has been among the most-hyped, most-loved shafts on the golf forums and blogs for the last year or so. But does it live up to the hype...and the sticker price? Read on to find out.

DI (2).JPG

Notes, Feel, and Miscellaneous

The AD-DI is billed as a mid-kick, high-launch, low-spin shaft. The feel is definitely stout. If you don't bring ample club head speed, or an aggressive transition, you probably won't feel a lot of kick. That stout feel is likely why it's such a hit among the faster swingers.

One thing I did really like about the AD-DI was the balance. The weight of the AD-DI is very evenly distributed so that it doesn't feel heavy in the hands or at the tip.

As usual, the test shaft here was a 70gram model in stiff flex. The AD-DI is offered in weights of 50, 60, 70, and 80 grams, with flexes anywhere from senior to X-Stiff.

Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't say something about the looks. While there really aren't any kind of graphics on the shaft, the orange color is an eye-catcher. If you play this shaft because you want people to know what it is, you will definitely get your money's worth.

DI (3).JPG

Performance

Since it's freezing here in Chicago, the Performance section only includes launch monitor testing for this review. For the launch monitor testing, I put the AD-DI up against my Matrix RUL, both in an R9 460 9.5 head. I hit 10 “good” shots with each shaft, changing frequently so that fatigue was not an issue, nor did I get grooved with one shaft to the detriment of fairness. I went through this process three times and averaged the sets of data. I did the testing of the AD-DI at the same time as the testing of the AD-DJ and G Series, so all three sets of data can be compared.

For anyone interested in the swing that produces these numbers: my clubhead speed is usually between 100MPH and 110MPH, my biggest problem is getting quick from the top.

One other note of importance: I have recently gained access to a much more accurate launch monitor. As a result, the “baseline” numbers of the RUL may be different than what you have seen before. Finally, while I believe that the new launch monitor is one of the best in the industry for accuracy, I do think that it gets a little crazy with the roll. As such, my low spinning shots result in really long total distances that I don't typically get here in the Midwest.

*Each metric shows low, average, and high.

RUL: Ball speed: 152 Distance: 267-291-327 Launch Angle: 10.3-12.5-15

Backspin: 1851-2651-3026 Sidespin: 100 Dispersion: 10L-5L-10R

AD-DI: Ball speed: 149 Distance: 268-295-318 Launch Angle: 12.3-15.5-16.7

Backspin: 1500-2152-2900 Sidespin : 300 Dispersion: 5L-10R-30R

Right off the bat I'll say that this shaft is probably a bit too stout for me. I don't consider myself a smooth swinger, but my transition isn't aggressive enough, nor my swing speed high enough, to consistently get a good load out of this shaft. That fact goes a long way towards explaining some of the numbers such as lower ball speed, higher side spin, and worse dispersion (the latter two being a result of over-swinging in an attempt to load the shaft). Frankly, the fact that the dispersion wasn't worse is a credit to the AD-DI.

Most importantly, the shaft does deliver on its promise of high-launch/low-spin: the average launch angle was higher than the RUL and the average backspin was significantly lower. The result was a longer average shot even though the ball speed was down.

Finally, it should always be considered that (until further notice) the RUL is going to make a lot of shafts look bad by comparison. The fact that the AD-DI did not perform as well for me does not mean it couldn't be a better shaft for someone else.

DI (4).JPG

At $380, the Graphite Designs AD-DI is at the very high end of shafts. While on one hand, I'm a bit aghast that shafts are now breaking through the $300 price barrier, there's a part of me that says, “In for a penny, in for a pound.” AS ALWAYS: go get fit. There's no value in a shaft that doesn't perform for you …even if Tiger plays it.

DI (5).JPG

Regardless of the sticker price, the Graphite Designs AD-DI does do what it claims to do: high launch with low spin. Furthermore, the dispersion was pretty darned impressive given that I was swinging from my heels trying to make it work for me. For those of you with super aggressive transitions or tons of swing speed, the AD-DI might be the cure for your high-spin blues.

Tour AD DI 6 - R or SR flex

Zerpersande.

Currently I'm using a Cobra Amp Cell set on 10.5* Draw with a NS Pro Regio Formula M Stiff flex. Nice feel to it, rather nice trajectory though I can balloon it at times. Usually hit it with a slight fade, but for some reason it will turn into a slice that can at least get me into trouble, and persist for the better part of a round. Swing speed of 93 mph. Will generally hit it about 230 or so. Long drives can push it out a bit, to quite a bit further. Hit one a bit over 300 yards on a hole that had a long run out.

Bought a Bio Cell+ with a stiff, Matrix Red Tie. Have The White Tie in a firm in my hybrids and am rather pleased, so was thinking the stiff would be okay in my driver. Dead as a board, very low trajectory, and definite slice. I had a Fujikura Fuel 65g shaft from my Amp Cell and that brought up the trajectory but there is still too much fade/slice. I thought about putting in a Regio just like my Amp Cell, but after reading about the Tour AD DI-6, perhaps for just a bit more, it might be an option.

I just hit a demo AD MT-6 in a stiff and that was too stiff. My swing speed of 93 would work for either the R or SR. At 61y.o. My swing speed isn't going to go up. And I'm using 950GH HT irons in regular flex that I hard-stepped once when installing them. Very happy with those. I just installed a SR flex Aldila shaft into a Cobra Baffler 6H and love the trajectory and feel, good for about 165 yards.

So there you go. That should be enough info. R or SR in the Tour AD DI-6?

Or, open the can of worms and give me other suggestions for a high trajectory, good feel, low spin, long hitting shaft.

Ahh, made an assumption that the DI-6 was available in R flex. Not the case. I would have to go with the DI-5 with an R1 flex. Rather big jump in the torque there, from 3.4 with the DI-6 SR to 4.7 with the DI-5 R1.

There is no thing as high launch with low spin as far as a shaft is concerned, it's not possible for a shaft to do that. That is an expensive experiment that will not do what you are looking for. Ball speed is a product of swing speed and contact. Any shaft can be a long hitting shaft if it compliments the golfer. Judging by your post, and the use of the word "slice", you have a swing issue or a face contact issue.
That is an expensive experiment that will not do what you are looking for. Judging by your post, and the use of the word "slice", you have a swing issue or a face contact issue.
There's no doubt I have a swing issue. At the same time, the difference in ball flight between the stock Matrix Red Tie and the substituted Fujikura Fuel was extremely noticeable. Additionally, at the range last night I hit an old Cobra L5V with a 50g Diamana R flex shaft. I slowed my swing down a bit and was hitting the ball extremely straight. I'm tempted to go with the DI-5R. It's a $200 risk, and as you said, an expensive experiment. Unfortunately, getting fit doesn't work the same here in Japan as the US. I have about zero chance of finding any place near me that will allow me to hit shafts side by side. I have to make do with what I can glean from this forum and other websites. It worked out well with the iron shafts, though I now have an extra set of almost new 950GH soft-stepoed shafts. But I do appreciate you taking the time to reply. If you would, what would be your advice...the DI-5R or the DI-6SR? Guess I could buy an extra adapter and buy both.

A lot of that will probably be dependent on the weight range that suites you, and your results may be different even with a 60 gram shaft vs a 65, or in your case a 5 vs a 6. Without trying and seeing results, that is going to be a crapshoot on the recommendation. The flex you choose is going to come down to feel. I currently play a DI 6s, tipped 3/8", and at a playing length of 44". Swing speed being right around the 97-98 range. Very happy with it, and it produces night and day contact differences compared to most of the other shafts I either have or have tried. Not quite sure why as all my other shafts are in the same range and close to the same bend profile, but that one just fits be well for some reason. But...with that being said, that is just something that works for me. I debated for a time trying the SR, but the S works so well for me, I didn't really see the benefit. There are cheaper alternatives depending on the marker near you. I don't find a lot of difference in the Kai' Li(weight range is in the middle, and bend profile is not that far off). The tip is a bit softer which may give you a little more feel if that is what suites you. With that being said, I have found that my swing really didn't like the Red Tie at all. Lots of people like it, but I was all over the place with it, and it never really felt good to me. Whatever you go with, I would highly advocate a shorter shaft length that most stock offerings come today. I first went to 44.5" and now at 44", and couldn't be happier. Comfort level is way better than it ever was with a longer length. I can still hit it crooked, but it's a flush crooked and the ball flight doesn't look like a banana.

To give you an idea of what sort of 'analysis' I get, I went to my local dealer, and found a SLDR with a MT-6S in in and compared it with a stock TM shaft in SR flex. Used to be I could easily look at the results of each shop. This time I was sort of pushed to just hit several shots with each. No chsnce to see my trajectory eadily, just the best three with each shaft. I felt as if there was an effort to sanitize and massage the data to a clear choice. So this idwa of tipped 3/8", well, I don't see it hapoening. Their 'fitting' involves using FitWay clubs with various shafts, I suppose just to check basic length/shaft combos. No actual club/shaft you are going to buy unless you buy FitWay. So I do it myself as a hobby. An expensive, far less than perfect, hobby. But one with which I have had some success. Finding shafts, other than through the internet, is basically hopeless. The place I got on the LM has NO bare shafts. The really big location of the same store has maybe 10 different shafts for drivers. That Regio Formula M is apparently not available in the US, so there is some advantage. At the same time, if I DO want a shaft from the US, that tacks on another $45 or so for shipping and maybe 10% on duties. So I do appreciate your feedback. I'm down to about 45.25" on my driver shaft, and given that I have some shaft extenders, maybe I'll try shortening one down to 44" or there about. And, yes, I do want more feel. That Red Tie is like a board. The Diamana 50g just FELTas if I was striking the ball, not hitting it with a coke bottle. The Kai' Li, well, I'll check it out. I'll post more once I do something. I'm sufficiently confused as to the best course of action as to need to step back and think for a couple of days.

Hehehe. Checked the Kai' Li. Slightly more expensive than the AD DI. $210 for the former, $180 for the latter.

I get what you are saying, tough situation when you don't have the availability to try shafts. To be honest, I took a leap when I went to the Di myself, as no one around had that shaft to test. Having dumped way more money than I have wanted trying different shafts, I at least have a general idea now of what I like to feel in a shaft and what feels wrong in my hands. If there are any shafts out there that you like, or remember liking, that may give some information to be able to help to find what you are looking for. What are you trying to descried with the "coke bottle" feel?
Hehehe. Checked the Kai' Li. Slightly more expensive than the AD DI. $210 for the former, $180 for the latter.
Bought mine from Callaway Preowned. One of the advantages to being able to do clubwork. Think I paid $70 or so and just swapped tips.
What are you trying to descried with the "coke bottle" feel?
Basically a dead feeling. For instance, on this one hole with slightly elevated tee and with a gentle runout after about 220 yards, I hit the Amp Cell/Regio Formula M 260 in total. A very nice looking shot and I knew it when it came off the face. The Bio Cell/Red Tie was a much lower trajectory, had strong fade to it, and yet managed to roll to almost 250. But I was amazed how far it had gone when I got out there. I just didn't feel anything, it was dead, I didn't feel it launch. This happened on a couple of holes where the Regio kept it in the fairway and the Red Tie would get about the same distance, be in the rough with a much worse lie, but still surprise me that it had gone as far gecause I really had no idea. Like you, I've tried quite a few shafts. My RBZ Rescues have firm White Ties. But they came with KBS shafts, I changed them to a NS Pro Zelos(??), then tried a UST Mamiya in one, and finally the White Tie. And hitting that 50g Diamana the other night, really feeling the launch, nice trajectory, I felt as if I had control. Maybe a good way of saying it is that I knew where the ball was going as I hit it. So I've got an extra head new that needs a shaft. As part of my on-going experiment I thought I would put something different. I'm leaning toward the DI-5 R1at the moment. Maybe take it down to 44.5" and see how it does.

You have any idea what Diamana version it was?

No, it was a stock Cobra L5V shaft . I tried Goggle but couldn't find anything about it. I also do my own work, but oddly enough, I just had my first 'downside'. Pulled that Diamana abd was going to see how it worked in the Bio Cell. I FLO my shafts, but didn't want to take off the grip. I'd read that you can use the ball-bearing race set flexing it from the tip. Maybe so, but I won't try THAT again. No more Diamana. Bought a non-plus Bio Cell on auction last night for $100. Regular Project X -PXv shaft in it. Going to see how that works in the Bio Cell+. Might even hit the Bio Cell in the wrapper a couple of times. I've used my Amp Cell for a year and the 'new' has worn off.

Okay, found some specs. It was a 50g Diamana Red Board.

Okay, that's a good start. These are the times I wish I owned Tom Wishon's profile software as it would make this easier. The Blue Board is a little closer to the AD DI in terms of bend profile. If I remember the profiles correctly, in comparison to those two shafts, the Diamana Red is softer in the butt section and softer in the tip...which honestly falls in right about where I expected you to want to be. The softer tip section probably gives you more feel and more liveliness than the Matrix Red Tie. If the 5 series weight is what you like, I would stick with that weight range. Comfort is the important thing, and no sense putting you into a weight that you feel is too heavy for you. The DI series could work for you, but I would definitely go with no tip trim, and probably the R series. Since we have something that you like to compare with, I am going to try and see if I can get some help from someone that has the profile software. Perhaps we can get you a few options.

A quick check while looking for info about the shaft indicated the 2015 models will have the M+, available in a 52g model. The link below says that they will retail for about $300, but I have found it available for $165, or slightly less than the DI model. http://www.golfwrx.com/220627/mitsubishi-unveils-2015-diamana-shaft-lineup/

Yes, from what I have seen, the M+ is supposed to be a new designed Red Board. Since they are new, time will tell what people think of them in comparison to the older line. The older Red Boards have been discontinued for a while now, but you still may be able to find them somewhere out there.

PL Blue 45 R is a good option to RED/Illima (48 grams) A few CPM stronger would be Boyaah as S flex (50 gram), the R version is very soft to flex and more like A, but (RED)/Illima is also "soft to flex" Both this options should be fine for a player at 90-95 with a medium swing I have Booyah X in one of my own drivers, but im brutal and might peek at 100 mph on a good day PS! the new RED has a higher TQ rating than most other shafts, and i have not seen any zone specs on it yet so i really dont know what they have changed from earlier versions. I put RED in () for that reason, since i really dont know where that shaft belong, but Illima was "soft to flex"
Yeah, I was going to post about those higher torque values. Significantly higher. Also found out that the supplier that has the M+ here in Japan only has the 60. But the torque is still higher in R flex than the DI-5R1. And that's very true about not knowing how they perform. I'd hate to shell out the cash for the shaft and be the one reporting that they don't suit my style.

Primarily consider torque for feel, at least I do anyway. If you like a shaft that has a little bit of softness to it, it's not necessarily a bad thing. IMO, that is one of the things that actually make the DI feel better to me over some other shafts in the same category. I used to look at high torque in a negative way, but not so much any more. Feel is subjective, and going to differ for everyone though. Never tied the PL shafts, but don't hear too many negative things on them. Most often, it's that people may feel they feel like noodles, but you'll get that from guys that really load shafts hard. Here the same thing about DI shafts from time to time, but that is about the only thing I hear bad about either of them. Always liked the feel of the YS series shafts, which are actually being brought back too this year. The older ones are hard to find now though. Being in Japan, I wonder if it's easier for you to source Graphite Design shafts over there?

And the recommended swing speeds, for what they are worth, are much lower than the DI shafts. 2- YS series shafts are new to me. Which manufacturer? 3- Lots of GD. Seem to perhaps be cheaper here. Would be glad to help anybody that wanted one, but an not sure of the shipping costs. The AD DI is starting to sound lime the way to go. Going to wait until I try the Project X -PXv that comes in the new Bio Cell. Hope it comes tomorrow so I can play it on Friday.

I would look at GD's G series in Red....there is a site that shows that the G. Series and DI are Very close in bend profile through out the range. 60R might be the ticket. Also, based on the Titleist Custom chart, the UST VTS series is very close to the DI.....suggest the Red in this one also. Last, when taking to a person who is a fitter and has this site that really breaks down shafts, he said that the Miyazaki JDL was the closes overall shaft to the DI If you must go DI and I would not blame you (my fav) I would look at the SR first before the R1

Primarily consider torque for feel, at least I do anyway. . Don't play too much into recommended speeds. That's why it is always better to go off of what you like, and then try to find something that is close to the profile. Shafts in the same swing speed category, can vary greatly in feel depending on the materials, how the bend profile is built, and how hoard/soft you load into the shaft. Many people do not fall well into those categories going off speed only when trying to find the correct shaft.

To all teh experts out there... How does the Kusala White stack up to these options? I've bounced around with a few of the shafts mentioned. The ADDI, Red Tie, and White Tie. I found the Kusala White to have the best results for my slow swing speed. But I know that everyone is different...

Callaway Rogue ST Max - Tensei AV White - 8* Taylormade M3 HL -  MFS5 White Tie 60S -0.75" (42.5")

Mizuno JPX 923 HMP - 4-G - Recoil 95 S - 2* upright

Callaway X-JAWS - 52/58*

Odyssey OWorks 2ball  -   34" - 1* loft - 71* lie Slighter Proto 1 #9/Del Mar design - High Toe - Long neck - Deep Milled face - 33", 370gr, lie 71*, loft 4*
PL Blue 45 R is a good option to RED/Illima (48 grams)
Hmmm, I found the PL Blue 65 R for $20. Says high launch. Think I will get one as a shaft to put into whatever head I decide to sell, most likely my old Amp Cell. But it seems to perhaps to be an older shaft. There is an identically named shaft for about twice as much. And they have both the 45/55g models. Confusing as hell trying to read this stuff with my minimal Japanese reading skills.
Also, based on the Titleist Custom chart, the UST VTS series is very close to the DI.....suggest the Red in this one also.
Found the VTS. The 55g will run me about $180, about the same price as the DI, whereas the 65g I can get for half of that. No idea. Crazy Japanese marketing idea. But looking at the torque, at 5.0 will that give me the desired 'feel' even with a 60/65g shaft? At half the price.......
How does the Kusala White stack up to these? I found the Kusala White to have the best results for my slow swing speed.
What's your swing speed and what weight/flex are you using. The Kusala is one of the shafts Zi can get. Same price range as the AD DI.

This is like pulling a loose string on a sweater. A real mix of availability, good prices, crazy prices, similar specs, etc. And no way to test them other than buy them and see. There's a VTS Silver 55R for about $85 that I think I will try. Also a PL Blue 65R for about $15. At least the VTS will give me a rough feel for a softer flex, light weight, high torque shaft, albeit a bit lower launch. Given the 35-40mh winds the day before yesterday, that can be a plus. Comments?

When I keep it between the navigational beacons, SS is 93 avg. I may have picked up a few MPH from my lessons this winter since my fitting. I have a "deliberate" (read:slow) tempo with a smooth transition. I have a Tour Issue (because... well... duh... why wouldn't you have TI?) Kusala White 61 stiff. Code is 4631.
SS is 93 avg "deliberate" tempo with a smooth transition Kusala White 61 stiff
Similar to my style except 93 is pretty much my top unless I really have a wide fairway. I've found a 61R for about $175-ish. I just want a shaft where I can slow my swing down just a tad and truly feel the shaft load/release. The NS Pro Regio stiff I have now gives me some feel when I hit it full on, but with slower swing speeds I just don't feel the load/release very much.

I'm sure that most WRXers would consider the Kusala White a wet noodle. Especially in R. However, I really like it. It's perfect for my swing.

Ball speed was a tick higher with Ventus Blue (175mph), but both were higher than any other shafts I hit. They both had slightly different feels, but they performed really well for me.

The Tour AD XC is designed to create a low/mid launch and low spin. It should create a lower ball flight but that can depend on how it compares to the shaft you currently have in this driver. Graphite Design recommend the R1 flex for driver swingspeeds in the 86 to 95 mph range and the SR for driver swingspeeds in the 92 to 98 mph range.

  22. Graphite Designs AD DI Shaft

The fact that the AD-DI did not perform as well for me does not mean it couldn't be a better shaft for someone else. Value. At $380, the Graphite Designs AD-DI is at the very high end of shafts. While on one hand, I'm a bit aghast that shafts are now breaking through the $300 price barrier, there's a part of me that says, “In for a penny ...

  23. Tour AD DI 6

Posted December 17, 2014. PL Blue 45 R is a good option to RED/Illima (48 grams) A few CPM stronger would be Boyaah as S flex (50 gram), the R version is very soft to flex and more like A, but (RED)/Illima is also "soft to flex". Both this options should be fine for a player at 90-95 with a medium swing.
