The best places to shop in Dunedin
The fashion scene in Dunedin is typically known for Nom*D’s dark aesthetic and Tanya Carlson’s runway gowns, but a host of stylish boutiques on the outskirts of The Octagon, on Moray Place, showcase a much wider eye for design.
At this year’s iD Fashion Show, Dada Boutique owner Marie Strauss sent models down the runway with balloon accessories. Not one to shy away from bold colours and a bit of quirk, her store in the Moray Arts Quarter, has a loyal following. She stocks her own Dada Collection label, with mostly one-off garments made from French and Italian fabrics, and the new Dada Knit label with 100 percent fine merino, as well as top-end Australian and New Zealand brands.
Over the road, not-for-profit design store Guild is run by a collective of designers, who take turns in running the store. Twelve labels are permanently in residence, including Melanie Child’s up-cycled denim and Chris Idour’s contemporary jewellery, with a revolving line-up of pop-up brands. If you are new to town, this should be your first stop to quickly acquaint yourself with local fashion.
Next to the thoughtfully curated Mint Gallery, Vull Design is a well-travelled interiors stockist, including Auckland’s charming Claybird Ceramics and Love Warriors of Sweden’s dreamy photo art.
After lunch at the local favourite, Dog With Two Tails Café, a must-visit store is Preservation Society . With a passion for natural fibres, owner Violet Faigan literally fills the store, floor-to-ceiling, on tiered racks, with vintage items mostly from the 1920s-1950s, including delicate tea dresses and velvet and silk garments.
Hand-crafted ceramics, glass and jewellery that show the fingerprint of the maker are found at Quadrant Gallery , which stocks a range of New Zealand artists, including owner David McLeod’s jewellery.
If you are wondering about the temperature during a winter shopping spree, Dunedin designer Jane Avery’s luxurious Lapin coats are made for you. Eco rabbit fur from Central Otago and vintage Kashmiri, Indian and Pakistani textiles are used in these exuberant jackets, made all the more special by a consultation with the designer.

Vintage Shopping, Dunedin
Shopping at Plume, Dunedin
Each of Dunedin's many precincts offers a different shopping flavour. Are you after trendy vintage stores, stocked with antique treasures, or would you prefer browsing more upmarket fashion boutiques and modern art galleries? Below is a brief guide to each of the city’s contrasting boroughs.
Edinburgh Way
Discover a designer shopper’s eden on Edinburgh Way, located on upper George Street. Here, the boutiques of iconic Dunedin designers rub shoulders with much-coveted New Zealand and international labels. Don’t miss trendy Bellebird Boutique , New Zealand label Ruby and the long-established Slick Willy’s , which was created as a necessary alternative to ‘the fashion crimes of 80’s department stores’. When you’re thirsty, stop for refreshments at Kiki Beware or the iconic Modaks . At the end of the day, visit the tiniest bar in the universe, Mou Very .
Vintage & Antiques
If eccentric vintage stores are up your alley, head to Lower Stuart Street and explore an eclectic mix of vintage boutiques and unique eateries. Pick up second hand jewellery, designer handbags, unique art & more at Finders Keepers , or head to Inside Out and Collectibles for high quality pre-loved fashion.
Octagon Entertainment Precinct
The heart of Dunedin; the Octagon is the social and entertainment district of the city. While shopping here is limited, it’s a great place for a pint or a glass of wine amidst striking heritage buildings at the end of the day.
Moray Place
A short stroll from the Octagon, discover a treasure trove of contemporary design stores, fashion boutiques, art galleries and jewellery workshops when you visit Moray Place. Bright and cheery vintage shop The Preservation Society is teeming with cool threads and glam dresses from the 1920’s, while Vull Design stocks beautiful interior goods. There are also many other hidden gems on this street.
Warehouse Precinct
Undergoing an exciting revitalisation project with restaurants and galleries unique to the city, this entire area is surrounded by the Street Art trail . The city embraces street art, with a growing number of blank walls being transformed into works of art by international artists like ROA (Belgium), Pixel Pancho (Italy), Natalia Rak (Poland) and Mica Still (NZ). View the street art map here. Explore the Chinese Garden or stop in for a Bookbinder’s workshop at Dutybound .
Port Chalmers
Rummage for vintage treasures by the seaside at Port Chalmers, a short drive from Dunedin City. Explore Ralph Hotere’s sculpture garden, art galleries, craft stores and plenty of vintage boutiques. When you need to rest your legs, kick back and enjoy the local flavours at one of the many great cafes in the port.

A weekender’s guide to Dunedin and its charming shops
Dunedin is cool both in temperature and style. The gothic little city, perched on a sweeping peninsula, feels the same as the city might have done 20 or 30 years ago.
That is to say, it’s near timeless, smattered with cafes where students loiter over a long black, shops sell the type of cushions you’ll want to own forever and the boutique Dunedin accommodation speaks of the city’s unique heritage.
The busman’s guide to Dunedin:
Moi on George, 317 George Street
On the main stretch of shops, you can’t miss Moi on George , a homewares store that stocks impressive international offerings and local goods. You’ll recognise the usual array of names here: Sage & Clare, Martino Gamper, Kip & Co, and Citta, which should entice you in with the contemporary designs and bright patterns.
Mum-and-daughter duo Sandy Cubitt and Courtney Henderson run the shop and their design expertise is worth the visit alone.
Adjo, 333 George Street
Nordic-style cuisine feels strangely at ease in this southern city. The hearty fare that Adjo serves up – sardines and goats’ cheese on house-made bread, stewed apples on crunchy chocolate muesli – is perfect to fuel you through the blustery winds that await you outside.
A trip to the cosy cafe (and gallery space) would be incomplete would checking out their extensive porridge menu. Choose from 10 porridge options, each more nourishing than the last.
Dunedin Art Gallery Shop, 30 Octagon
We’re suckers for a good art gallery and Dunedin Public Art Gallery is well-stocked with surprises (a nonchalant Monet tucked away in a corner, anyone?). But perhaps the biggest surprise is the magnificent gallery shop, which boasts an array of books, trinkets, and homewares.
Pick up a print of Robin White’s wonderful paintings of the local landscape, or a Mondrian-inspired vase.
Vull Design, 34 Moray Place
At Vull Design , owner Shiree Gwynne scours the globe for those magazine-worthy, hard-to-find objects. Her taste is impeccable and her lighting selection is second to none.
Nestled back from the Octagon, fit in a visit to the store on your way to the railway station. They’ve recently got in a crop of Alessi kettles that we’ve got our eyes on.
Slick Willy’s, 323A George Street
Tucked away up some century-old steps lies Slick Willy’s , which has been kicking around since 1983. Slick Willy’s is about as cool as the students who frequent it, which is very, judging from the nose piercings and Doc Martens.
The store primarily deals in fashion but fear not, there’s still a great selection of homewares to satisfy a casual browser. From checkered towels to 3D-printed stools, you’ll love the colourful and stylish ranges available in-store.
Also visit: Go surfing at the seaside suburb of St Clair and dig into a delicious halloumi wrap at Long Dog afterwards. You can’t beat the cafe for coffee or ocean views. Pequeno Lounge Bar is the best kind of hidden bar: a cosy historic building with an open fire and a penchant for live jazz. Enjoy a Negroni or three.

Coolest block in dunedin: walking main street, day and night.
Cyclists ride along the Pinellas Trail, which crosses Main Street in Dunedin.
- Scott Keeler for VISIT FLORIDA
By Janet K. Keeler
Dunedin, Fla., is some kind of wonderful.
Whether it’s by sheer happenstance or smart business design, Dunedin (pop. 36,000) has succeeded in maintaining its small-town charm while putting out the welcome mat for visitors.
Its walkable Main Street is a tangle of unique restaurants and watering holes (some dog friendly like Skip’s Bar & Grill ), interspersed with boutiques hawking jewelry, arts and crafts, plus tropical home décor that tells the world you’ve been to Florida. Yes, that’s means palm trees and flamingos. Park the car and spend the day, no reservations necessary.
Dunedin isn’t necessarily one of those places on a traveler’s bucket list, situated as it is in the middle of heavily populated Pinellas County and 25 miles from Tampa.
It’s on the Intracoastal Waterway, and boasts fabulous sunsets and an abundance of craft beer, with perhaps more breweries per capita that any other city in the state. It also offers a beach on fabulous, pristine Caledesi Island , accessible only by ferry or boat.
The explosion of artisan beer in Florida has rolled into Dunedin big time. Dunedin Brewery lays claim to being the oldest microbrewery in Florida and Caledonia Brewing on Main is among the newest. In between there is 7venth Sun Brewery , Woodwright Brewing Company , and Cueni Brewing Company .
An amble through Dunedin might start (and end) with a brew at Caledonia, housed in a 1925 building that is the former home of the Dunedin Times newspaper. Caledonia opens at noon and closes down at midnight. There’s no food but a shelf of board games keeps patrons and their underage kids occupied.
Casa Tina Mexican Restaurant, Main Street Dunedin, has been in business for 25 years.
As with most microbreweries, there are seasonal offerings but a taste of El Diablo Guapo Mexican Lager could put you in the mood for a meal at Casa Tina Mexican Restaurant , one of Dunedin’s most popular eateries a short stroll away. Inside, the bright pink walls are covered with Day of the Dead art in many forms, vintage photos of Mexican landscapes and people, plus lots of vestiges of Frida Kahlo, the iconic artist. There’s art on the plate, too, including mole poblano, one Casa Tina’s most popular dishes. The house margarita is a top-seller, too.
Visitors walk along Main Street in Dunedin, lined with shops and restaurants.
Lucky you’re walking. Fueled with a beer and a margarita, it’s time to hit some of the Main Street stores or the Dunedin Downtown Market in Pioneer Park if you are visiting on a Friday or Saturday. The pretty park turns outdoor bazaar then, and besides fresh produce and prepared food, be on the lookout for pottery, art, artisan dog treats, candles, and even orchids.
There are still plenty of places to browse even if you’ve hit Dunedin on another day of the week. The Pinellas Trail , a 38-mile jogging, biking, skating and walking trail that runs nearly the length of the county, cuts across Main Street. It’s not unusual to see people in their athletic clothes sitting in restaurants or walking through stores. There are places to lock up bicycles.
Near the Pinellas Trail is the Clay and Paper Gallery of Art , a wonderland of jewelry and pottery, plus wall and garden art in many mediums. A ceramic grouper swimming across your wall at home will broadcast that you’ve been to Florida, and that whirligig in the rose garden? A reminder of a happy vacation for sure. The gallery also hosts regular events including wine nights and artists’ receptions.
There are some fun vintage shops that will gobble up lots of your time as you ruffle through old clothes, linens, home décor and silverware. Amanda Austin and My Favorite Things have their own flavor and are easy walks from Pioneer Park.
Nancy’s Fancy shop back on Main Street is one of those places that gets a hold of a certain type of shopper and doesn’t let go. The baubles! The scarves and wraps! The oh-so-cute reading glasses that make getting older better! A serious saunter through this shop could net all the gifts you need to buy for the year.
All this shopping and lookie-looing should put any visitor in the mood for chocolate. (The effects of the beer and margarita are long gone by now.) You won’t have to go far from Nancy’s to the intersection of Broadway and Main where you can pick from a Salted Chocolate Carmel cone at Strachan’s Ice Cream or exquisite dark chocolate-covered hazelnuts (and more) at Viktoria Richards Chocolates . Dunedin Coffee Company & Bakery satisfy those chocolate cravings, too.
In many ways, Dunedin is not your typical small town, mostly because the businesses don’t go to sleep with the sun goes down. Two veteran Dunedin restaurants, the Crown and Bull (formerly Kelly's) and the Black Pearl, sit side by side. The Black Pearl is a fine dining dinner establishment; the Crown and Bull, open until the wee hours seven nights a week, features modern American dishes made from scratch with seasonal local ingredients. Offerings include prime rib, corned beef, sauerkraut, and purple kimchi. And make sure to sample their famous dill pickles!

We came across the Kiosk when downtown looking for place to eat. Wondered what happened to the cigar store on the spot. Grabbed some food to take home and was very glad we did. We had a couple different dishes plus side of meatballs. All were very good! Service was great! Nice to have Italian food right in downtown Dunedin! Sad to see the cigar store gone but very happy at the new great dining choice downtown.
We picked up fettuccine pomadoro and Margherita pinsa after an afternoon at the brewery. The food was great. The crust of the pinsa seemed like it was wood fired or something along those lines. It was really good. Excited to go back.
Not the best. The sauces are way too thin and watery. It's more of a soup than any pasta I've had before. The meat portions are so small that I wouldn't feel dishonest describing this as a de facto vegetarian restaurant. The chefs have talent, there's no obvious reason that pasta dishes in the $15-20 range shouldn't be better than what a rookie could make at home.
This is the best Italian food I've ever had!! So delicious. recommend for everyone visiting Dunedin. Great patio and outside eating experience. Fast service!! Very kind and considerate employees. They let our pup eat with us. Very pleased
The family all went to the kiosk tonight. Another great place in Dunedin and us doggos are welcome. Picnic table casual outside seating and the patio was open and very clean. Pops had a ravioli special and mom had their pizza. All told I think they liked it a lot. Pops said the food was very authentic and fresh and the owners seem to really care about the food. Stop by you'll like it!
Tomato and mozzarella salad, cheese (4 of them) pizza, and the ravioli special.
I've been to the kiosk a couple of times. Once for sit down order and the other a takeout Americana pinsa. Sit down was fine. The outdoor setting was shaded and picnic style tables were fine. Packing was excellent. I even ordered extra meatballs (very good) and 1lbs of pasta (very good) to take with me. The takeout of Americana pinsa was a disappointment. I asked for well done but it was doughy. Plus ingredients, mushrooms, black olives and pepperoni were bland. I wished they had used Kalamata olives instead of those tasteless black canned olives that you get at grocery stores. The mushrooms were also tasteless. The pepperoni seemed as generic as everything else. Not a great pinsa for sure. I'll be back because their pasta and meatballs are good.
We ordered from the kiosk tonight. It was absolutely delicious. The truffle pasta was filled with mushrooms and brought me back to one of the best meals I had in Florence Italy. It was that good. We also had a flatbread with prosciutto and arugula. Just great. Get out and support our local gem as soon as you can. Portions were generous too.
The Kiosk... a beautiful spot! Once again restaurateurs Nello and Natalya from Soul Sicilian Fusion are combining a relaxing atmosphere with food that taste delicious. Their high standard of ingredients and desire to share the best food possible means you enjoy the food and nourishing your body, easier said than done. Love it!
I have been there a few times .. everybody's very friendly and the food is delicious! I had lobster ravioli special... Which was out of this world delicious hope he makes it again soon! Also the rigatoni with meat sauce very very good! And the homemade tiramisu I highly recommend... He said it was his grandma's recipe thank you grandma!
