Even better, the icing on the cake would be to earn an income from your travels. The question everyone asks is whether this really is possible. The answer is yes – with a travel blog.

What is a   travel blogger?

A travel blogger is someone who travels to different places, writes about their experiences and publishes them onto an online blog. If you have enough money saved to live on, you could use your travel blog to share your journey without worrying about readership or making money.

If you’ve ever wondered how travel bloggers can make money on Instagram or other platforms, the answer is – by  monetizing their blogs  with the aim of either funding their travels or earning a professional income. With that view in mind, let’s look at how to start a travel blog.

The top 12 tips for starting a travel blog

What profitable travel bloggers do is create high quality content and remain consistent. Many new travel blogs will cease to exist early on, so if you want to be published for many years to come and make a decent income from your travels, you need to put some thought into your blog. Just because you build it does not mean that your audience will come. Instead, you need to work hard at creating a platform people want to visit time and again.

To help you get the most out of your travel blog, and become what is considered a successful travel blogger , check out our 12 top tips:

Treat it like a business

Although it may be tempting to head off on a plane and write your blog when you have a spare moment, doing this is unlikely to make you money. Treat it like a business and decide how much you want to earn in advance.

Decide to get paid

When you love something, it is easy to fall into the trap of just doing it because it's your passion. Unfortunately, that sentiment won’t earn you money, so you have to decide in advance you are going to be paid for your work. How the best travel bloggers make money on their blogs and other platforms like Instagram , is by upkeeping an attitude of viewing their blog as a business, rather than a hobby.

Plan ahead and be organized

An essential component of beinga travel blogger is organization. As part of your business plan, you need to decide in advance how you are going to run your blog. Know where you want to travel, how you are going to get there, where you are going to stay, etc. Devise a content calendar outlining the content you will be publishing each month, and decide the methods you will use to monetize each post accordingly. In real life, it is likely your plan will change and fluctuate, but having a guide provides you with focus.

Build an audience

Before you can earn any money from your blog, you need an audience. There are many methods to build readerships, from paid advertising to organic searches. Make sure you always have several methods in place at any one time to maintain consistency.

Do it for your readers

What great travel bloggers do is write with their readers in mind. Do your research and find out what questions your potential traffic wants answered, and then address those queries. If you base your blog around solving your audiences' problems, they will return again and again.

Be different

There are many travel bloggers, so to stand out from the crowd you need to be original and change the generic idea of what a travel blogger is . Use a different approach, or find an exclusive niche within travel blogging. Create a unique selling point that no one else has.

Be yourself

Discover a niche that works for you and your audience and give it your own voice. If you try and copy someone else, your authenticity will suffer.

Learn all you can

You can always be better, so commit to learning all you can. Whether you improve your writing skills, your search engine optimization techniques, or your knowledge of traveling, always look to learn all you can.

Invest in your blog

In the early days when your budget may be tight, you may not be able to invest in hiring professional designers or other help, so initially invest as much time as you possibly can. When you have more money, invest some of it back into your website to ensure it is as professional as possible.

Record everything

While you are traveling, make it a habit to record everything as you never know when it may come in handy. Take photos of everything, record where and when you visit different places, jot down your emotions and details about the people you meet. All these notes will help when your creative juices need a push to put words on the page.

Be consistent and persistent

Your blog needs time to build. Your audience will need to get to know you before they trust you, so be consistent and persistent with your entries. Write as much as you can, particularly in the early days.

Love your job

A travel blog is as much a job as it is a way of life. You must love your job. If you don’t, you may need to question if you are in the right industry.

How much do travel bloggers earn?

When embarking on a new career, it’s normal to want to know how much you can earn. However, with any freelance role, how much you earn is dependent on the amount of work you put in. As a rough guide, an established travel blog can expect to  make $3,000-5,000  a month, although some make much more.

Here are a few examples of some successful travel blogs:

Derek Earl Baron  of  Wandering Earl

Derek has been traveling since 1999, but originally he funded his travels by odd-jobbing while on the road. However, this all changed in 2008 when he published an eBook about his journeys, which earned him enough to carry on traveling without working on the road.

This led to the Wandering Earl blog launching in 2009, with the readers of his book becoming his first followers. The blog grew, and by 2011 he was earning $2, 500 a month from his book sales and affiliate marketing. His earnings are now reported to be  $12,000 a month .

Matt Kepnes  of  Nomadic Matt

Matt Kepnes earns a staggering  $50,000+ a month  from travel blogging. His blog grew from his desire to travel and make money on the way, but he started the site purely as a method of practicing his writing so he could work for  Lonely Planet . But the more he developed his blog, the more he realized there was a need for budget travel advice people could dip into online. So he changed his focus, and the rest is history.

Bethany Davies of  Flashpacker Family

Bethany has been traveling since her early 20’s. In 2014, she and her family left New Zealand and have been traveling ever since. They fund their travels and earn an income with various sources, including advertising on the website, consultancy work, web design and renting out their home. On average they earn about  $5,000-10,000 a month .

How do I make money as a travel blogger?

Most travel bloggers make money through a variety of different income streams, rather than relying on just one method. Many travel bloggers are content to fund their lifestyle, whereas others achieve incomes that far exceed their travel costs. However, it’s worth bearing in mind that lucrative travel blogs do not happen overnight. They take a lot of time and effort to become established and develop a large following.

Money making methods include:

Affiliate marketing

Promote and sell products on behalf of a third party. When one of your leads clicks on your affiliate links and makes a purchase, you will get paid a commission.  With no stock involved, it’s a perfect method for the travel blogger to utilize to earn money.

Selling products

Creating and selling your own related products can be a great money earner as all the profits go straight to you. However, making the products initially can take some time and effort.

Advertising

Allowing automatic ads on your website can earn some extra money each month. You could also consider charging companies to run permanent ads on your site.

Sponsored posts

Established blogs often get requests from companies asking them to write sponsored posts about their products. In return, the company pays the blogger or offers products as remuneration.

Public speaking

Speaking at conferences or at professional networking events can be quite lucrative, if you have the confidence to pursue this form of income. Top travel conferences and events you can find us speaking at include  Women In Travel Summit  and  TBEX .

Coaching

Teaching others how to run a travel blog, either through mentoring, consultations, online courses or lecturing at colleges, is not only a good way to increase your income but also builds your credibility.

Freelance writing

Getting paid by other businesses to write about your experiences and travel tips can provide a good income while fitting the lifestyle of the travel blogger.

Where do I find affiliate programs for my travel blog?

When it comes to finding affiliate programs that fit your travel blog, you can really think out of the box. Let’s say you are writing a blog about what insurance you should have as a travel blogger. You could discuss travel insurance and point to  affiliate programs  that match. Or perhaps you want to talk about how to find affordable  accommodation  while on the road. Whatever you want to write about, you can find a product or service to promote that will fit. Look to Awin’s  advertiser directory  for inspiration.

 A final word

Building a travel blog takes time and effort, but the rewards more than outweigh the hard work. For many, it is the dream job. However, to succeed you must stay focused and work at it. But most importantly, maintain the love for your job. Try to keep your knowledge fresh and this will come across in your blog. Your audience will feel your passion and buy into you. Following that, your blog will start paying dividends.

If this is your dream, follow it. You’ll never look back.

No matter what culture or country you’re from, or wherever you choose to travel, the one thing you and I have in common is that food is a huge part of our lives.

Migrationology.com is where people who travel for food  learn about authentic local food from around the world (or at least from the destinations I’ve personally visited – I keep this blog very personal).

What is Migrationology?

I’ve covered the definition of Migrationology much more on the Start Here page (I’d encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already).

But in short, Migrationology is about doing something you’re passionate about, and learning and growing in that passion.

For myself, and I think for you too, food and travel is that passion (and that’s what this blog is all about).

Along with delicious and authentic food and restaurant recommendations, my goal is also to inspire you to get out of your comfort zone, set goals, and pursue what you’re most passionate about.

Here’s My Personal Story:

The 10 Second Version :

Nice to meet you, my name is Mark Wiens. I’m a full time travel eater, and along with my wife, I’m based in Bangkok, but we travel frequently.

Along with eating, I also like to blog, make videos about local food, and I earn a living from ads on videos, and selling eBooks and t-shirts .

Check out my latest food adventures on Facebook and Instagram .

You can now either scroll down, or if you’re interested in longer story, keep reading…

I eat, blog, and make videos.

And that about sums it all up.

Well… ok, there’s a little more to it than that…

First off, I’m a Christian and give God the glory in everything I do.

My parents, both of whom also really enjoy food, are the ones responsible for my love for food.

I was born in Phoenix, Arizona, attended my first year of school in the tiny town of Albertville, France, was home-schooled for 3 years in the jungle of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and attended a Christian international school (Rosslyn Academy) in Nairobi, Kenya for 8 years.

After high school, I returned to the US, attended Arizona State University, and graduated in 2008 with a bachelors degree in Global Studies.

During university my hunger to learn more about the world and eat more delicious food grew.

In 2008, right after graduating, I set off to travel through South America on a solo trip with few plans. I ended up taking a TESOL certificate course to teach English, and hiking through the mountains of Patagonia.

travel blogger wikipedia

A few months later I returned to the US to attend my sisters wedding.

It was during that time, back in early 2009 when I decided to start a blog . With the help of about 10 cups of coffee per day, Migrationology.com was born.

I still wasn’t ready to get a job and stay put, so I caught a one way ticket to Bangkok, with no plans other than to eat as much as I could.

After traveling around Southeast Asia for about 6 months, I managed to spend nearly all my money.

I was in the Philippines at that time, and I caught a flight from Manila to Bangkok. At this point, I decided to get a job teaching English, and it didn’t take long before I signed a contract to teach English for a year.

However, English teaching was not for me (it was a great experience, but teaching English is just not my passion).

But during that year, I set a personal goal that I would never teach again, and that I would find a way to make a living on the internet, so I could travel (and eat) and earn money at the same time.

It wasn’t easy.

Every spare moment I would blog and sit glued in front of my laptop until my eyes went crazy.

At the beginning, when I made the decision to earn a living online, I’ll admit that I had to live on the cheap (really cheap).

One of the biggest turning points for me was when I published my first eBook, the Eating Thai Food Guide . I finally had my very first product to sell on my website.

It took about 3 years of online work and experimenting before I really started making enough to live fully and support anyone other than myself.

But when you have a goal you’re working towards, you’ll do what it takes to get there.

In Thailand I met Ying, the most amazing girl in the world. We got married in July 2013, and we’ve been traveling and eating together ever since.

Since I started blogging, I’ve loved taking photos (here’s the camera I use now ). But it was sometime randomly in 2012 when I said to myself, “photographs of food are great, but how can I share more of the atmosphere and the emotion of eating?”

At first I started making extremely simple street food videos and I really had no idea what I was doing. Years down the road, making food videos on YouTube is one of the main things I do.

Ying and I in Jordan

That brings us to where we are now:

My wife Ying and I are based in Bangkok , but we frequently travel for delicious food. We strive to provide authentic food and travel information, through blogs and videos, and to also connect with people through the food we eat.

I’m excited to announce that we now offer ultimate Bangkok food tour experiences .

And, along with some of my friends, we opened a Thai restaurant serving one of my favorite Thai dishes!

Thank you for reading my personal story, and I’m really happy to meet you,

– Mark Wiens

Hey! We’re Kara and Nate, a couple of high school sweethearts who have made our dream of long-term travel a reality. Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we’ve been traveling the world full-time for the last 4+ years and documenting our daily adventures on our YouTube channel . In December of 2019, we completed our goal of visiting 100 countries!

In January of 2016, we moved out of our apartment, sold our cars, put all of our stuff in storage, and boarded a one-way flight to Tokyo, Japan. The original plan was to spend one year seeing as much of the world as possible before we headed back to Nashville where we would settle down, get serious about our careers, and start a family…

Thankfully, things don’t always go as planned. Here we are 2.5 years later and still on the road. YouTube has turned into our “career,” and we’re living a life better than we could have ever imagined!

If you somehow stumbled upon this site without coming from our YouTube channel, this video will catch you up on our first two years of travel.

Not Your Average Travel Blog

We’ve chosen to document our daily travel adventures on YouTube and Instagram . So, instead of talking about our travels for a third time here on the blog, we’ve devoted it to creating useful resources around the three topics we’re most passionate about: travel hacking, YouTube, and entrepreneurship.

Travel Hacking

Before we left to travel we saved up over 2 million miles and points through travel hacking strategies that I’ll teach you here on the blog. We’ve used these miles and points to save well over $20,000+ in travel expenses over the last few years. I want to teach you how to do the same. If you want to learn how you can take your next trip for pennies on the dollar using miles and points, check out the resources below.

YouTube Resources

Before we started this YouTube channel in January of 2016, we knew very little about filming and editing videos. We knew even less about growing a YouTube channel. Here we are 2.5 years later, we’ve published over 500 videos, our channel has over 225,000 subscribers, we won a Shorty Award, and we’re making a full-time living creating travel videos. If you have a crazy dream (like we did) to create a business around sharing your passion through video, check out the resources below.

Income & Expense Reports

Before we left to travel we saved up $30,000 hoping that would cover the cost for 1 year of full-time travel. From the beginning, I (Nate) tracked our expenses religiously because I knew the more money we saved, the longer we could continue traveling.

Then, 6 months into traveling, we made the decision to attempt to turn our YouTube channel into a business that could make us enough money to continue traveling after the first year. Ever since, I’ve been publishing reports of our income and expenses here on the blog.

The first full report I posted was in July of 2016 . We made a grand total of $603.26 that first month, and we spent WAY more than we made. Click the link below to see how far we’ve come!

Travel with Us!

Last year we came up with a crazy idea to put together a one week Vespa tour through our favorite region in Italy. In just a few short weeks, 45 viewers from around the world will be joining us here in Le Marche, Italy for a week of eating delicious pasta, tasting the local wines, eating way too much gelato, and cruising around on Vespas. It’s going to be incredible, and we want to do more trips like this in the future. If you’re interested in joining us on a future trip, click the button below to let us know!

Every week we send out a newsletter with updates from the road. If you enter your email below, you’ll be the first to know exciting news like where we’re traveling next, stuff we’re giving away, new resources published on the blog, and opportunities to travel with us on future trips!

Hello! I’m Shivya Nath. In 2011, at age 23, I quit my corporate job with a dream of travelling the globe. Two years later, I packed up my life into a backpack and decided to hit the road indefinitely. I travel slow, seek offbeat and local experiences, stay in a place for a few months or as long as it inspires me, and move on.

I’ve done a solo land journey from Thailand to India via Myanmar, and travelled overland from the Persian Gulf via Iran to Armenia. I’ve lived with a Mayan community in Guatemala, volunteered at a coral reef restoration project in Cuba, lived in a nunnery in Ladakh, and shed my fears and clothes at onsens across Japan. I hope to inspire you to step out of your comfort zone and experience the world – slowly, meaningfully and consciously!

Travel stories, with their myriad trials, tribulations, and adventures, are made for sharing. Today, the best way to do this is by starting a travel blog. While writing your blog seems daunting, in reality, the sheer number of blogging platforms out there has made it easier than ever. With some patience and creativity, anyone can blog about their adventures with ease. This article will help you create your travel blog.

Building Your Blog

Step 1 Find a place to host your blog.

  • Each hosting site will offer a different strength. WordPress is quite user-friendly for beginners, while Substack allows your blog to function more as a newsletter. Even Tumblr remains a viable option, perhaps for writers who plan to emphasize pictures in their posts.
  • While almost all blogging sites offer a free version, some also offer paid versions that grant you access to a wider variety of features and customization options. Consult these options carefully when deciding what is best for your blog and its long-term ambitions.

Step 2 Purchase a domain name.

  • You can host your blog on any site and have it redirect to a URL that you own.

Step 3 Think of your unique angle while traveling.

  • Is your blog just meant to keep friends and family in the loop about your travels, or do you hope to reach a wider audience?
  • What kind of perspective do you bring to a new place or country? Are you a foodie looking to compare different recipes, or an expat adapting to a new culture? Perhaps a photographer looking to capture something new?
  • What can you teach people from your trip? Are you an inventive budgeter, a student of art and history, or a camping guru? [2] X Research source

Step 4 Think about your blog's angle when designing your page.

  • Pictures: If you plan on using a lot of photos, choose a layout that offers lots of pictures on the screen at once. Many layouts have a homepage or top bar with slideshows or a collage of your pictures, making them front and center for your viewers. Often, these templates show off big, high-quality photos.
  • Essays: Consider your margins and your font here. You want a layout that is easy to read and doesn't distract viewers from the words on the page.
  • Mixtures: If you plan on posting a bit of everything, consider a simple, scrolling design. These usually give small clips of pictures or text in chronological order, with the latest post up top, allowing your viewer to scroll through and get an idea of what each post is about. [3] X Research source

Step 5 Choose a short, memorable name.

  • Try to avoid hyphens, numbers, and odd symbols or spellings whenever possible.
  • Make sure your URL and blog name are the same. This will help people find your blog, and it'll make returning users less confused.
  • Avoid changing your domain name and/or blog name frequently, if at all. You should decide on one blog name in advance that you know you won't change later.
  • Try not to look like you're impersonating an existing blog or company. Search your blog name to see if there are companies with similar names, and try changing it.
  • If you plan on blogging from a single location, consider incorporating that new city or country into your title.

Step 6 Plan when and how you can post while abroad, and let your readers know.

  • Know when you will have time to write posts and let people know your "posting days."
  • When out of service, write multiple posts. You can then schedule them all when you're back in internet range. Learning how to use your site's "Schedule Post" allows you to write many posts at once, then put them up every few days. This is perfect if you'll be leaving service again. [5] X Research source

Step 7 Set up your blog's pages.

  • The "Contact" page can also be a good way to receive feedback on your writing, and to redirect readers to your social media pages.

Writing Great Content

Step 1 Make an enjoyable trip your first priority.

  • Oftentimes, writing is best at the very end of the day, right before bed, or right when you wake up. You'll be able to reflect on the day you just had, then move on to the next one. [6] X Research source
  • Be sure to take lots of pictures while you travel. Your readers will love to see lots of visuals related to your topic. And even if you choose not to include them in your work, they will act as helpful visual cues/reminders while writing!

Step 2 Brainstorm ideas for posts based on your experiences.

  • Dedicate posts to describing cultural differences, like a post on food, a post on public transportation, a post on morning rituals, etc.
  • Dive deeply into one specific area, like a neighborhood or a hidden location.
  • Teach your readers how to do something, like how to plan their own trip, how to dress like a native, how to order at a restaurant, etc.
  • Travel blogging should remain insightful and informative, but don't be afraid to add a personal touch! Making yourself familiar to your readers is what will keep them coming back for more.

Step 3 Write or post every few days.

  • Stick to the schedule you promised your readers as much as possible. If you promised three posts a week, try not to publish any more or any less. [7] X Research source

Step 4 Diversify your posts.

  • You may be writing a blog, but feel free to consult professional travel writing for inspiration as well. Publications like Outdoor Magazine and National Geographic may have covered similar topics or locations. [8] X Research source

Step 5 Add visuals, music, and imagery.

  • Take some videos of great events or post a link to a song you heard. Engage the reader as much as possible so that they feel like they're on your trip with you.
  • If you don't have any photos or videos of your own, you can still find high-resolution images online to complement your writing. Just don't pass such pictures off as your own!
  • If you need to edit your photos, there are several free and paid photo editors out there. Pixlr and VSCO are two user-friendly options, while Adobe Photoshop remains the industry standard for those more comfortable with their photo editing skills.

Monetizing Your Blog

Step 1 Build a media kit.

  • If you are interested in finding corporate sponsors, Instagram may be your best bet for self-promotion. Several companies scour Instagram for influencers to provide with online codes or product samples.

Step 3 Comment on...

  • Be sure to familiarize yourself with SEO so your own posts can be found as easily as possible online.

Step 4 Set up an affiliate marketing account.

  • With an affiliate program, you are given a personalized link. Simply distribute this link in your posts, and receive a kick-back when users click the link and make a purchase.
  • You are probably already recommending various services and attractions in your writing anyway, so why not monetize those recommendations?
  • While you may also consider contextual advertising through a service like Google Ads, or selling ad space the old-fashioned way, affiliate marketing strikes the best balance between proper payout and ease of use.
  • Once you have built a large enough of a following, you may find it quite easy to sell your own ads, maximizing your profits along the way.

Step 5 Set up a subscription model for your blog.

  • Because your blog would take the form of a newsletter, Substack might be the best service to use if you want to explore a subscription model.

The desire to travel has always been there, but the craving for making videos and sharing those on  YouTube became a natural development a few years later as I started going on more trips and felt it would be great to share my travel hacks and stories with the world. I recommend personal safety over anything, even if that means spending a little extra than usual at times. Travelling solo can teach you to be a better individual, become sociable, teach life hacks and make you more acceptable and responsible towards all cultures and folks. It’s a very inspirational experience, so it is important to make sure that you take care of yourself to experience it all.”
