travel quiz questions

I’ve always loved a good pub quiz, but recently I’ve been doing about 3 quizzes a week. Once thing I’ve quickly learned is I’m quite good at general knowledge but I really know my travel trivia questions. Whenever there’s a travel round my eyes light up.

I always feel that being a travel blogger I’ve got a bit of an unfair advantage when it comes to travel trivia, but hey, I’m not complaining. One of the reasons I love travelling so much is learning about different cultures and societies. I’ve always said travelling is the best education in the world because you just learn so much.

While I’ve been locked up inside I wanted to come up with these travel quiz questions and answers to test your world knowledge.

If you fancy hosting your own virtual quiz then hopefully you can use some of these questions. First of all, let’s see how many you can get right!

52 out of 55. Decent quiz, I enjoyed that. Thought the Hell pit was in Uzbekistan for some reason. I thought the island of spice was Cuba… Idiot Knew Callanish was Scottish but answered as Ireland when doing the quiz.

That’s a great effort Craig, well done!

I didn’t do too well, but enjoyed it a lot. Just one small point: Germany’s flag is made up of the colours red, black and gold, not yellow. It dates back to the Prussian resistance against Napoleonic rule. Volunteer soldiers wore black uniforms with red buttons and golden trimmings. The colours became a symbol of freedom and nation. Thanks for the great quiz.

Thanks for the comment Jean. I’m glad you enjoyed the quiz, and it’s always good to have a bit more background information on Germany!

@Jean, Good photograph took. Thank you.

That was really fun idea. Although I didn’t do well on your test but it was actually really fun to learn new things about the world.

Hope to see your coming blog. Thanks for the post.

@Pradip Karki, Send me more quizzes. Thank you.

Travel Quiz Questions: Ultimate Travel Trivia to Play With Friends

Posted on Published: February 9, 2021  - Last updated: July 6, 2024

Categories Blog , Resources

These travel quiz questions and answers will help you host the ultimate game of trivia. Whether it’s a house party or a Zoom party, I’m a massive fan of games nights with friends. Insert the topic of travel into the mix and I’m sold! While trivia might be a popular pub game, it’s really easy to take part at home, too. I’ve developed these fun travel trivia questions so you can play your own game of trivia with your friends no matter where you are in the world.

Travel Trivia Questions

I’m going to start by posting the full list of travel trivia questions. I’ll put them into three categories: easy, medium, and hard difficulty. Then, I’ll post the travel quiz questions and answers at the bottom of this blog post. If you’re interested in challenging yourself to this online travel quiz, you can see how many you got right.

Travel Trivia Questions for a Game With Friends

Tikal Guatemala

During these times where it isn’t possible to see friends in person, my group of friends took part in a weekly games night. We simply called it our “Friday Night Games Night” and met over Zoom or Discord to play some games together. We’ve played lots of games together, like Jackbox TV, virtual escape rooms, Among Us, and others.

We eventually got a bit tired of the games we continually played each week. So, the group decided to do a classic game of trivia. The best thing about quiz games? They’re not just for trivia night at the pub! You can easily come up with your own questions and categories, catered specifically to your interests and expertise.

It’s possible to host trivia nights when you gather with your friends, whether it’s over Zoom or in person. You can play this online travel quiz with your long distance pals, too.

Hosting a Trivia Game Night

Whether it’s in person or online, you’ll need to decide whether or not you want to play travel trivia games or a broader game of trivia with many categories. For us, we decided that each player would ask questions based on a topic.

For instance, I had the topic of travel and geography. All of the geography quiz questions that you’ll see below are the ones that I used in the game. Each person came up with their own trivia questions and answers. Some other fun categories could include: history, science, entertainment, food, music, sports, current events, pop culture, and more! Do you want to ask only travel trivia questions or expand to several categories? That’s all up to you.

One person will keep score throughout the game. In our game, we decided that the first person to correctly answer questions within each category would win. We each took turns requesting questions in our categories of choice.

We had three levels of difficulty: easy, medium, and hard. Our group started with the easy questions. Once we had a winner for the easy category overall, we moved on to the medium questions, and ended with the hard questions.

Travel Quiz Questions for Around the World Trivia

Quebec City in winter

Alright, let’s get to the game! Feel free to steal these questions for your own version of my “Friday Night Games Night”. If you plan to use these travel quiz questions with your friends, I suggest that only one person has access to the questions and answers to minimize access to the answer key.

Even if you don’t have a games night planned with your pals, feel free to challenge yourself with these travel quiz questions and answers. Try to answer all of the questions below and see how many you get right. You’ll likely learn some new and interesting geography facts along the way, too. Test yourself with these ultimate quiz on travel!

The Exact Right Moment to Make Small Talk on an Airplane

Do it too soon, and you’re stuck..

This is  One Thing , a column with tips on how to live.

I am a frequent traveler, and may be among the few who actually enjoy flying. The longer the flight, the better. Between the pretzels and peanuts and free movies, I appreciate the opportunity to put on headphones and lose myself in a book I don’t have time for. Or a podcast I haven’t gotten to. Or to sleep. I can be out before the plane leaves the ground.

I also relish the chance to interact with strangers I might never meet otherwise. Airports and airplanes are the great equalizer, where just about any member of any society can find themself thigh to thigh and shoulder to shoulder with any other ( yes, even in coach ). On the ground, I am far from an extrovert, but in the air, I will go out of my way to strike up a conversation with whoever is sitting next to me.

Still, a flight can provide a lot of hours to fill, and not all conversationalists are created equal.

So I have a rule that I use. I always wait until the pilot announces the plane’s descent before I chat up my seatmates. That 20 minutes is long enough to open up an array of intriguing doors, from restaurant recommendations in the destination city to business or even personal connections. You can meet some fascinating people in the time it takes a plane to descend. But if the exchange goes awry—if they seem weird, or in a worst-case-scenario are over-talkers—then it’s not too long before you can make a clean escape.

Using this guideline, I have met published writers and galleried artists, D1 basketball coaches and successful entrepreneurs, friends of friends and potential love interests, and a multitude of other individuals who were just enthralling to speak with. I have also happily packed up my bag and walked away from conversations that were less than on-the-level, whether conspiratorial, drama-ridden, or just plain boring. Sometimes they don’t want to talk at all, in which case there was no harm done. In every case, I rarely regret the interaction.

I live in a mountain town, and recently applied a variation of the rule to ski chairlifts. Six minutes in the snow can feel like forever, so I wait until we’re approaching the top of the peak. It also works on bus rides, and even in restaurants. Give yourself an out, and the risk is always worth the reward. Or as someone I once met in Row 26 put it: “The juice is worth the squeeze.”

19 Facts About Tim Walz, Harris’s Pick for Vice President

Mr. Walz, the governor of Minnesota, worked as a high school social studies teacher and football coach, served in the Army National Guard and chooses Diet Mountain Dew over alcohol.

  • Share full article

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, in a gray T-shirt and baseball cap, speaks at a Kamala Harris event in St. Paul, Minn., last month.

By Simon J. Levien and Maggie Astor

  • Published Aug. 6, 2024 Updated Aug. 9, 2024

Until recently, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota was a virtual unknown outside of the Midwest, even among Democrats. But his stock rose fast in the days after President Biden withdrew from the race, clearing a path for Ms. Harris to replace him and pick Mr. Walz as her No. 2.

Here’s a closer look at the Democrats’ new choice for vice president.

1. He is a (very recent) social media darling . Mr. Walz has enjoyed a groundswell of support online from users commenting on his Midwestern “dad vibes” and appealing ordinariness.

2. He started the whole “weird” thing. It was Mr. Walz who labeled former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, “weird” on cable television just a couple of weeks ago. The description soon became a Democratic talking point.

3. He named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. “I think we can lay to rest that this is the coolest bill signing we’ll ever do,” he said as he put his name on legislation declaring a stretch of Highway 5 the “Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway” after the musician who had lived in Minnesota.

4. He reminds you of your high school history teacher for a reason. Mr. Walz taught high school social studies and geography — first in Alliance, Neb., and then in Mankato, Minn. — before entering politics.

5. He taught in China in 1989 and speaks some Mandarin. He went to China for a year after graduating from college and taught English there through a program affiliated with Harvard University.

6. He is a veteran . Mr. Walz enlisted in the Army National Guard as a teenager and retired 24 years later in 2005. He deployed to Italy from 2003 to 2004 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and received the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service and two Army Achievement Medals.

7. He was a rare breed in Congress: a Democrat from the rural Midwest. For more than a decade, Mr. Walz represented Minnesota’s First District, in the southern part of the state. He was the top Democrat on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, supported funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, voted for the Affordable Care Act and voted against restricting federal funding for abortion.

8. He is a Nebraskan by birth. He was born in West Point, Neb., grew up in Valentine, Neb., attended high school in Butte, Neb., and graduated from Chadron State College before moving to earn a master’s degree in experiential education from Minnesota State University, Mankato.

9. He got involved in politics after being barred from a George W. Bush rally. In 2004, when he was still a teacher, he accompanied students to the rally and objected when, in his telling , they were denied entrance for having volunteered for Democrats.

10. The woman who trained him to run for office is now his lieutenant governor. Mr. Walz attended Camp Wellstone, a Democratic political training camp named after former Senator Paul Wellstone, before ousting a Republican incumbent to win his House seat in 2006. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan was a trainer there .

11. He was an early supporter of gay rights. At Mankato West High School in Minnesota in the 1990s, he sponsored a gay-straight alliance and has said it was important at that time for the sponsor to be “the football coach, who was the soldier and was straight and was married.” When he won his House seat in 2006 in a conservative district, he ran on support for same-sex marriage.

12. He has shifted politically on other issues. He was more moderate than many Democrats during his time in the House, voting for stricter vetting of refugees and receiving endorsements from the National Rifle Association. He shifted significantly to the left on guns and on other subjects when he ran for governor in 2018, and he and Minnesota’s Democratic legislature have enacted a sweeping progressive agenda.

13. He is a gun owner and hunts pheasants and turkeys. He introduced a “Governor’s Turkey Hunting Opener” to kick off the turkey-hunting season in Minnesota and runs a similar event for the pheasant-hunting season. “I guarantee you he can’t shoot pheasants like I can,” he said on CNN of Mr. Vance.

14. He would be the third vice president from Minnesota. Hubert Humphrey (who served under President Lyndon B. Johnson) and Walter Mondale (who served under President Jimmy Carter) were the first two.

15. He and his wife had their two children through in vitro fertilization. It took seven years of fertility treatments for them to have their daughter, whom they named Hope. Mr. Walz spoke about the experience publicly after an Alabama Supreme Court ruling this year upended I.V.F. treatment there.

16. He coached the 1999 football state champions. It was the first state championship title for Mankato West High School.

17. He is a Lutheran. More specifically, he sometimes describes himself as a “Minnesota Lutheran.” “Because we’re good Minnesota Lutherans, we have a rule: if you do something good and talk about it, it no longer counts,” Walz joked during a speech last spring. “So what you have to do is to get someone else to talk about you.”

18. He doesn’t drink after a D.W.I. in 1995. Mr. Walz has said he stopped drinking alcohol after he was pulled over for speeding in 1995 and failed a sobriety test . His wife told him at the time: “You have obligations to people. You can’t make dumb choices.”

19. He also does not drink coffee . He prefers Diet Mountain Dew. As does his Republican counterpart.

What is Jubilee 2025 and why you should reconsider going to Rome next year

Planning a trip to Rome next year? You might want to reconsider.

Jubilee 2025 is one of the biggest Catholic events on the global calendar next year.

With Rome being a bucket-list destination for many Catholics, the Holy Year is set to bring even bigger crowds to both Italy’s capital and Vatican City.

Celebrated every 25 years, the jubilee is a tradition in the Catholic Church that sees Catholics give time and dedication to a year of spiritual journey and reconciliation. It’s also a time when pilgrimage and good work allow previous sins to be revoked.

Pope Francis has chosen the theme “Pilgrims of Hope”, emphasising a focus on compassion, unity, and the spiritual journey.

The event is set to launch on December 24, this year, with the Pope leading the opening of the St Peter’s Basilica bronze Holy Door.

With this, Rome is bound to be a premier destination for Catholics in 2025, marked by religious ceremonies, cultural events, and community activities that celebrate faith and bring people together.

These religious events, along with the yearly influx of tourists travelling to Europe every summer are estimated to bring 32 million tourists to Rome.

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri told Reuters that 3200 public construction works, with 322 Jubilee-centred projects, are under way to prepare the city for the grand event.

Since early this year, the Italian capital has been preparing for the occasion, with billions of euros being invested to transform Rome and make structural changes to the city’s tourist sites, transport hubs, parks, and streets.

This includes a major renovation at Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano, which Gualtieri promises will be “one of the most beautiful squares in the world”.

According to Reuters, a state jubilee fund worth €1.3 billion ($2.3 billion), and about €3b post-pandemic European Union funds will be used for the projects.

The city council is also preparing to finance the completion of Rome’s third metro line, which will connect the St Peter’s and St John Lateran basilicas.

Gualtieri promises all of the construction projects will be worth doing, guaranteeing a better and safer city for visitors next year.

What can tourists expect at Jubilee 2025?

The jubilee year includes many traditions, but the main characteristics are relating to pilgrimage, reconciliation, liturgy, prayer, and a religious visit to the Holy Door.

Religious events around the city are expected to increase once the jubilee kicks off in December. Primarily, pilgrims from around the world will flock to Rome to pass through the Holy Doors of the city’s four major basilicas — St Peter’s, St John Lateran, St Paul Outside the Walls, and St Mary Major — a ritual believed to offer spiritual benefits.

Should you travel to Rome next year?

The jubilee is a sacred event for the Catholic Church, but casual visitors are also invited to participate in the holy festival occurring in the Eternal City.

If you’re keen to experience myriad grand events during the jubilee year, visiting Rome will be busy and most likely stressful, but also worthwhile.

For Catholics, the jubilee is a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual experience. However, it may not be the ideal time for casual tourists to visit Rome.

If your primary interests lie in exploring the city’s historical and cultural treasures, without the added pressure of large crowds and foot traffic, you might want to skip Rome off your European trip next year.

'We have the flight records': Trump insists that he was on helicopter with Willie Brown

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump doubled down on Friday evening that he had an emergency helicopter landing with Willie Brown, even as the former San Francisco mayor denied such an incident ever happened.

Trump told the New York Times he had records to back his claim , but he has not produced them.

On Thursday, it appeared Trump had confused Brown with the former California Governor Jerry Brown , during a press conference, including a bizarre and false story about a near-death experience in a helicopter.

Adding to the mystery, a former Los Angeles city council member, 95-year-old Nate Holden, told POLITICO  that it was, in fact, he who was with Trump aboard the helicopter.

“Willie is the short Black guy living in San Francisco,” Holden told POLITICO. “I’m a tall Black guy living in Los Angeles."

From Mar-a-Lago, the former president dramatically recalled a story about almost crashing on a flight while traveling with  Willie Brown, who briefly dated Vice President  Kamala Harris  several decades ago.

“I went down in a helicopter with him; we thought maybe this was the end,” Trump said. “We were in a helicopter going to a certain location together, and there was an emergency landing. This was not a pleasant landing.”

Trump claimed that Brown had made critical comments about Harris, but the former mayor refuted those remarks, stating that he was always on good terms with his former protégée, even after their breakup.

“And Willie was — he was a little concerned, Trump explained. “So, I know him, but I know him pretty well. I mean, I haven’t seen him in years. But he told me terrible things about her. But this is what you’re telling me, anyway, I guess. But he had a big part in what happened with Kamala. But he — he, I don’t know, maybe he’s changed his tune. But he — he was not a fan of hers very much, at that point.”

However, new details show that perhaps Trump confused the two California politicians.

Brown, a longtime Democratic power broker who also served as the California State Assembly speaker, told the San Francisco Chronicle after Trump’s press conference that he was never in a helicopter with the former president .

“You would have known if I had gone down on a helicopter with Trump,” he told the newspaper. He also denied that he had ever said anything disparaging about Harris to Trump.

The NYT reported that Willie Brown wasn’t on the helicopter flight at all , but Gov. Jerry Brown, the former governor of California. The current governor of California, Gavin Newsom , who was also on the flight, said there was no emergency landing, and the helicopter’s passengers were never in any danger.

“I call complete B.S.,” Newsom said.

So what did happen on the helicopter?

In 2018, then-President Trump toured fire-ravaged portions of California via helicopter alongside then-California Governor Jerry Brown.

Brown, who left office in January 2019, confirmed to CNN through a spokesperson, that there was no emergency landing and no discussion of Kamala Harris.

Trump’s campaign and the Harris campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday about the apparent mix-up.

When President Joe Biden , 81, was still running for reelection, Trump, 78, frequently challenged him to take a cognitive test, alleging he was unfit for office.

Biden has since been replaced atop the ticket by the 59-year-old Harris, forcing Trump to scramble to find new lines of attack.
