West Virginia’s forests are one of the things that make West Virginia so special. This is the perfect adventure for those who want to feel the wind in their face, but who also enjoy learning about the flora of an area. Our knowledgeable guides will not only lead your adventure, but show you so much more about plants, wildlife, and more.

The TreeTops Canopy Tour gives you a taste of multiple adventures in three to four hours. After checking in with your guides, you’ll get outfitted with a harness, gloves, and helmet. A short walk will lead you to the entrance to our course, where you trip leader will conduct “Ground School” with a safety speech and demonstration of proper ziplining technique. Now, you’re ready to zip!

The tour starts on a ridge top, which gradually descends through a forest of oak, maple, and birch trees before settling at a beautiful stand of hemlock trees along Mill Creek. You’ll fly through the hemlocks on 11 different ziplines, make your way over 7 swinging sky bridges, air stairs, also you can admire Mother Nature during a couple of rigorous hikes on the forest floor. You’ll even zipline over Mill Creek, where you can admire this free flowing stream from above. This isn’t an ordinary zipline tour, however. Your guides will teach you about the flora of the region, while pointing out various trees and their attributes. It’s adventure, but with a twist!

As a bonus, you can feel good that a portion of your admission to TreeTops Zipline Canopy Tour helps fund protective treatments for the beautiful hemlocks you’ll see along the way, which are currently endangered by invasive insects that can kill these majestic trees.

Requirements and limits.

  • The minimum age for this adventure is 10 years old.
  • Participants must weigh 90-260 pounds.
  • Participants must be of sound mind and body to perform specific safety tasks independently.
  • All guests participating must fill out a waiver prior to your trip. Those under 18 will need assistance from a guardian when filling out their form.
  • No alcoholic beverages, illicit drugs, or tobacco products are allowed while in our gear on our courses.
  • We do not allow pregnant individuals on TreeTops Zipline Canopy Tour. Please consult your guide about any other medical conditions before you head out on the course. Few conditions ever keep individuals from going on this course, but it really helps the guides cater to specific needs.
  • A moderate level of physical mobility is required for this course. Participants will be required to extend their arms and actively use their hands when steering and in proper zipline position.
  • Individuals will also be required to perform their own hand braking on this course. Backup systems will be in place, but guests must prove a certain level of competence with hand braking to continue past our beginner zips.

What’s Included

We’ll provide expert safety instruction and all the necessary safety gear, including helmets, gloves, and harnesses.  Your guides will carry a liter of water to split throughout the group, but it's very important to hydrate ahead of time during the summer months.

What to Wear

Closed-toed shoes are required. The TreeTops harness has leg loops and shoulder straps, so wear comfortable clothes that you can easily move around in and would be comfortable under a harness. Skirts, dresses, and other loose-fitting clothing may get caught in our rigging and should not be worn for TreeTops. A rain jacket is a good idea if weather dictates. Tightly tie back long hair so it’s out of the way.

What to Bring

During hot summer months, you might want to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a full water bottle that can be safely clipped to your harness.  Let your guide know if any specialized medical supplies need to be brought out on course throughout the adventure. We will have a safe spot for car keys, but valuables are best left in your cabin or vehicles.

Where to Meet

Trips will start and end at building number 8 on the Mill Creek side of campus. Arriving 15 minutes prior to your trip time for check-in really helps the flow of the trip.

Inclement Weather

Trips will continue even during periods of heavy rain, but trips will be halted in the case of lightning or heavy sustained winds around our course.

Trip Length

It all depends on the size of your group, but the trip generally takes 2-3 hours. This includes gear-up time, ground school, and a bus ride back to base after completion of the course.

Hours and Reservations

Reservations are strongly encouraged for the TreeTops Canopy Tour. Tours depart morning to evening and run rain or shine, but we’ll temporarily close the course during lightning storms or high winds. If we know in advance that we will be closing TreeTops, we'll try to contact you. If your tour is cancelled, we’ll offer you the option to participate in another activity, rebook for a different day or time, or be issued a rain check.

There is inherent risk in anything you do, and we aim to mitigate any risk involved with ziplining. All TreeTops trips will have two guides - one lead, one sweep who are highly trained in both safety standards and rescues. Before the tour begins, your guides will review the procedures and explain the hazards during a practice, ground-level zip at Ground School. On course, you will be double clipped onto two steel cables, which are capable of supporting more than a ton of weight. TreeTops Zipline Canopy Tour was built by Bonsai Design, the premier zipline design and build company in America.

Can I watch my group zipline?

Onlookers will be able to observe participants at gear-up, ground school, and our first two ziplines.  After that, the tour will descend towards inaccessible areas within our hemlock preserve.

What is ground school?

Ground school is where participants will learn all the dos and don’ts of our zipline course. Guides will explain steering, braking (yes, you do this yourself), and any safety information to guests during this demonstration. Participants will be required to successfully demonstrate these skills before we begin the first zipline.

What if I am afraid of heights?

Once your tour begins you will be at heights of 30-100 feet for the entirety of the tour.  You will be required to perform physical tasks on course while also navigating any mental fears.  Our guides are highly trained in helping calm these fears and in most cases, participants are able to successfully complete course.

What if I decide if I do not want to continue the course?

There will be an option to exit the course after the second beginner zip via our escape zip.  This will require no effort on the guests' part besides a short hike out of the forest back to base.

Due to high traffic volume online booking is currently running slow. For booking help call (855) 379-8738 or see our Trip Planner .

Alpine Adventures

Tree Top Zipline Tour

tree top canopy tour

Perfect for families, beginners, and thrill-seekers alike. Our experienced guide staff will provide you with all the gear and information needed to give you the confidence to step out of your element while leading you and your crew on a variety of Ziplines ranging from 250 to 1,000 feet in length Also including two suspension bridges. This unique tour provides plenty of time, soaring with the birds, providing views that only a zipline tour can provide of the surrounding mountainscape. The zips get progressively faster and longer, and the complete tour is roughly 2 hours long.

The Treetop Tour   starts with a gentle ground take-off to put you in the trees. If you’ve never been with us before, we recommend this adventure. It’s a great introduction to ziplining, or for those looking to explore the forest canopy up close and personal. Perfect for families, beginners and thrillseekers alike. Ziplines range from 250 to 1,000 feet long with also 2 suspension bridge crossings. You’ll zip from tree to tree on 10′ platforms reaching heights of 60′ off the forest floor, and zip ground to ground. The Treetop Tour has 5 ziplines and takes about 2 hours to complete with a group of 13, including a shuttle from our office on Main Street and an exciting Off-Road ride up to the start of the course.

The Timberline Tour is a bit more of a thrill ride with longer, higher & faster lines than the Treetop Tour, along with extended lines and improvements in 2023. It’s recommended for guests who have ziplined before or enthusiastic first-timers and adrenaline junkies as it begins from Treewalk Village, 60′ off the ground! This first step can be intimidating for those who may be sensitive to heights. While the Treetop Tour zips you through the forest, the Timberline zips you over the forest and provides some spectacular views along the way. There are dual or side-by-side ziplines to race your friends, sky bridges, and extreme tree platforms. It includes 5 separate ziplines including 2 side-by-side ziplines, the longest being 1600′ long and 200′ off the ground, crossing valley after valley, with 4 suspended bridges. This course takes 2½ hours to complete with a group of 13, including a shuttle from our office on Main Street and an exciting Off-Road ride up to the start of the course.

SUPER SkyRider Tour is a bit more physically challenging. It includes faster, longer, and higher ziplines, a 25’ ladder climb to the next zipline departure, and various technical bridges. 7 ziplines, 9 suspension bridges, and 1 ladder climb. This is recommended for experienced zipliners only. This is our most EXTREME tour and will be physically demanding for some people.

If you’ve been with us before and are ready for the next step in the journey, the SUPER SkyRider is it! This tour takes approximately 3 hours with a group of 13 including a shuttle from our office on Main Street and an exciting Off-Road ride up to the start of the course.

Tours meet in our office at 41 Main Street in Lincoln where our staff will orient you to your equipment and accompany you to the trailhead in our shuttle. Alpine Adventure’s zipline tours are located on a 1700′ hilltop called Barron Mountain, consisting of 300 private acres just 10 minutes south of Loon Mountain and Franconia Notch in the White Mountains.

Alpine Adventures inspects its zipline courses and trucks daily. The facility is inspected by a 3rd party and ACCT regulations annually. Cables are ½” aircraft grade steel that will hold 23,000 lbs, attached to trees and poles that are guy-wired and cemented to the ground, “where they will turn into fossils in 3000 years,” one engineer stated, attesting to its strength and durability. Guests glide through the air using a pulley, climbing harness, and dual lanyards, conforming and exceeding ACCT standards for load capacity.

Tour duration depends on the course selected and how many are in your group, usually 2-3 hours from start to finish. See tour descriptions. All tours start with welcoming you at our office on Main Street, a gear up session & a short shuttle and Off-Road Adventure ride in our 6×6 Pinzgauers to the top of the course.

Click here  for group information.  Please call our reservations at 603-745-9911 to coordinate accommodations.

You can book online any time or call the reservation office at (603)745-9911 during business hours, 7 days per week. Reservations are pre-paid. Groups of 11 or more, click here  for group sales.

When you check in for your tour there is a formal weigh-in for every guest. Those guests that do not meet the tour requirements will not be refunded or receive a voucher. Space is limited and guests are being turned away for your tour, as well expenses have already been incurred in preparation for your tour.

We zip in most weather conditions. Dress for the elements. We have a limited amount of rain gear available to borrow in an emergency; however, it is best to come prepared with proper clothing, footwear, gloves and hats if necessary. Morning tours are better for summer, afternoon is warmer in the fall.

To avoid losing your valuable equipment we recommend renting a GoPro camera to capture your trip.

Space is limited and guests are being turned away for your tour, as well expenses have already been incurred in preparation for your tour.

We will not cancel due to rain or snow. Mountain weather is subject to change quickly and can be volatile. We will make every effort to complete your tour as planned; however, we will temporarily suspend a tour at our discretion, sometimes with very little notice, due to lightning, thunder, or high winds.  If we cancel a tour, we will work with guests on a case-by-case basis to determine the best resolution. If we delay a tour, our cancellation policy still applies, please plan your day accordingly.  It is your responsibility to provide us with the best mobile number, or email, to reach you the day of your tour.  We do our best, but weather cancellations have happened, so be advised.

Experience the Tree Top Canopy Tour at El Establo Mountain Hotel

One of the lines through the cloud forest at Tree Top Canopy at El Establo Mountain Hotel

You are flying through the cloud forest, with your arms outstretched, feeling the brisk air on your face, a bird’s eye view to the lush forest below.  You’re not dreaming, you’re doing the Superman cable, the last one of 16 zip lines at the Tree Top Canopy Tour inside El Establo Mountain Hotel.

During a recent visit to El Establo Mountain Hotel I was fortunate to experience their canopy tour.  ( Read more about Night Walk they also offer here. ) One of the hotel’s minivans picked us up outside our building and drove us inside the grounds to the start off point for the tour.  This is where we met our guides, two young Monteverde locals who displayed their playfulness and personality straightaway, making us feel at ease.  We started off at main building, where we were set up with all equipment, helmets and given some security tips.  It was just the four of us, so you couldn’t get more personalized than this.

Once the first couple of lines had been mastered, I felt more relaxed and able to enjoy the views and beauty below as well as focus on doing what I needed to do safely.  As we walked along the trails and hanging bridges from one tower and starting off point to another, I asked the guides what they loved most about their job.  The people for sure they said, they had been fortunate enough to provide this experience to children, elderly adventurers and people with disabilities.  They said the look of awe, joy and glee in their faces is tremendously rewarding.  They try to be as accommodating as possible, and depending on the situation, kids can be strapped in with their parents, disabled folks strapped in with guides, and they said they did have a 96-year-old lady do the entire zip line by herself and have a blast.

The tallest tower, standing over 150 feet tall, has an amazing 360-degree view of the cloud forest, the hillsides and the Gulf of Nicoya and its islands below.  Stand up tall and breathe in the air, observe and take in your surroundings.  The last line you can choose to do Superman style, so you’re strapped in and your feet lifted up so you feel like you’re flying.  The guide who always goes ahead is waiting for you at the end of the line and is responsible for slowing you down and braking you on the way.  This guide was also nice enough to snap photos and videos of us the entire way.  By this line I felt so safe and relaxed I was able to enjoy the flight thoroughly and visualize my entire surroundings, absolutely spectacular.  I thought this was the end of the adventure, but alas no, there was still the Tarzan Swing to enjoy.  After a few meters’ free drop you swing about reminiscing your childhood and laughing your head off.

Our guides were very attentive experienced and fun, and it is certainly an experience not to be missed while visiting the Monteverde area. What a luxury being able to have such an experience steps away from your lovely hotel room at El Establo Mountain Hotel.

A Beginner’s Guide to Treetop Adventures: What to Expect And How to Prepare

Raphael Dume

Are you ready to embark on an exhilarating journey through the treetops? Treetop adventures have gained immense popularity in recent years, offering an unforgettable blend of nature, adrenaline, and adventure. Whether you’re planning your first tree canopy experience or simply curious about what to expect, this comprehensive beginner’s guide will provide you with all the information you need to make your treetop adventure safe, enjoyable, and memorable.

Table of Contents

Introduction to Treetop Adventures

Treetop adventures, often referred to as “tree canopy tours” or “zipline adventures,” take participants high above the forest floor, allowing them to explore the natural beauty of the trees and the surrounding environment from a unique perspective. These adventures typically include activities such as ziplining, rope bridges, and treetop walks, all of which provide an up-close encounter with the canopy ecosystem.

Why Treetop Adventures?

Treetop Adventures offer a host of benefits for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Here are a few reasons why you might want to consider embarking on one:

  • Connect with Nature : Treetop adventures provide a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural world, high above the ground. You’ll get to see the forest from a bird’s-eye view, spot wildlife, and appreciate the beauty of the trees and foliage.
  • Adrenaline Rush : If you’re seeking an adrenaline rush, treetop adventures won’t disappoint. Ziplining, in particular, offers an exhilarating experience as you zip through the treetops at high speeds.
  • Challenge Yourself : Treetop courses often include various obstacles and challenges that require physical and mental dexterity. It’s a great way to push your limits and build self-confidence.
  • Educational : Many treetop adventure providers emphasize environmental education. You can learn about local flora and fauna, as well as the importance of forest conservation.

Now that you know why treetop adventures are so enticing, let’s delve into what you can expect from your experience and how to prepare for it.

What to Expect During a Treetop Adventure

Safety first.

Before we dive into the details of treetop adventures, it’s crucial to emphasize safety. Treetop adventure courses are designed with safety as a top priority, and you will receive thorough safety instructions and equipment. Here are some key safety aspects to expect:

  • Safety Briefing : Your adventure will begin with a comprehensive safety briefing. Pay close attention to these instructions as they are crucial for your well-being.
  • Safety Gear : You will be provided with safety gear, including a harness, helmet, and sometimes gloves. Ensure that all equipment fits properly and is securely fastened.
  • Professional Guides : Trained guides will accompany you throughout the adventure. They are knowledgeable about the course and can assist you in case of any concerns.
  • Age and Health Requirements : Most treetop adventures have age and health restrictions, so be sure to check these before booking. They are in place to ensure the safety of all participants.

The Adventure Begins: Ziplining and More

Now, let’s take a closer look at the thrilling activities you can expect during your treetop adventure:

  • Ziplining : Ziplining is the highlight of many treetop adventures. It involves gliding along a cable from one platform to another, often high above the ground. The feeling of soaring through the treetops is unparalleled.
  • Rope Bridges and Swinging Walkways : You may encounter rope bridges, swinging walkways, and suspended nets that challenge your balance and coordination. These elements add an exciting dimension to your adventure.
  • Tree-Based Platforms : Treetop courses are interconnected with a series of tree-based platforms. These platforms serve as resting points between activities, offering stunning views and a chance to catch your breath.
  • Obstacle Challenges : Some courses feature obstacle challenges like cargo nets, climbing walls, and Tarzan swings. These elements provide a physical challenge and add excitement to the adventure.
  • Educational Stops : Depending on the provider, you may have educational stops where guides share insights about the local ecosystem and wildlife.
  • Varied Difficulty Levels : Treetop adventure courses often have different routes with varying levels of difficulty. Beginners can start with easier courses and gradually progress to more challenging ones.

Environmental Awareness

Treetop adventure providers often emphasize the importance of environmental conservation and sustainability. During your adventure, you might learn about the trees and wildlife in the area, as well as the steps taken to minimize the impact of these activities on the ecosystem. It’s a great opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation for nature.

How to Prepare for Your Treetop Adventure

Now that you have a good idea of what to expect during your treetop adventure, it’s time to prepare for the experience. Proper preparation ensures a smoother and more enjoyable adventure.

1. Choose the Right Treetop Adventure Provider

Selecting a reputable and safety-conscious provider is paramount. Here’s what to consider when making your choice:

  • Research : Read reviews, check online ratings, and ask for recommendations from friends or family who have experienced treetop adventures. Look for providers with a strong safety record.
  • Certifications : Ensure that the provider and its guides have the necessary certifications and permits to operate treetop adventure courses.
  • Equipment : Check that the provider maintains its safety equipment and follows industry standards.
  • Age and Health Requirements : Verify that the provider’s age and health requirements align with your capabilities.

2. Dress Appropriately

Wearing the right clothing and footwear can significantly enhance your comfort and safety during the adventure:

  • Comfortable Clothing : Wear lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing suitable for the weather. Avoid loose clothing that could get caught in equipment.
  • Closed-Toe Shoes : Opt for closed-toe shoes with good grip. Avoid sandals or flip-flops.
  • Long Hair : If you have long hair, tie it back securely to prevent it from getting entangled.

3. Stay Hydrated and Energized

Treetop adventures can be physically demanding, so it’s essential to stay hydrated and fueled:

  • Water : Bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated. Many providers have water stations along the course.
  • Snacks : Pack some energy-boosting snacks like granola bars or nuts to keep your energy levels up.

4. Follow Safety Instructions

During the safety briefing, pay close attention to instructions from your guides:

  • Listen Carefully : Take in all safety information provided by your guides.
  • Ask Questions : If you’re unsure about anything, don’t hesitate to ask questions. Your safety is their priority.
  • Follow Rules : Abide by all rules and guidelines, including weight restrictions and age requirements.

5. Respect the Environment

Show respect for the natural environment by following these guidelines:

  • Leave No Trace : Carry out all trash and waste. Dispose of it properly in designated bins.
  • No Wildlife Interference : Avoid touching or disturbing wildlife. Keep a safe distance and observe them from afar.
  • Stay on Paths : Stick to designated paths and platforms to minimize damage to the forest floor.

6. Capture Memories

Don’t forget to bring a camera or smartphone to capture the breathtaking views and memorable moments. Many providers allow you to bring cameras as long as they can be securely attached to your person.

7. Overcome Fear

If you’re feeling nervous about the heights or the adventure in general, remember that it’s entirely normal. Trust the equipment, guides, and safety procedures in place. Most participants find their initial anxiety turns into exhilaration once they begin.

Overall rating

Thank you for the Fun time! Our guides helped to make our visit very enjoyable!

We have been ziplining in Mexico and Costa Rica. Maybe we were spoiled. The Maui runs were shorter. Still fun. But maybe better for people that haven't done it in other places.

Fun first time ziplining

We took our six year old and he had a blast (so did we). The guides were attentive and kind and overall amazing. Our group had at least 12 people so while the guides tried to minimize waiting times there inevitably wer ... e some periods where we waited around. Just something to be prepared for. We definitely want to do this again. The museum was pretty cool too!

15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in Moscow

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Dec 23, 2023

Moscow is one of Europe's most enigmatic destinations, home to a fascinating history and colorful, awe-inspiring architecture you won't find anywhere else in the world. Moscow might be one of the most populous cities in the world with over 11 million inhabitants, but this hasn't changed its strong cultural and social traditions.

Walk the cobblestone streets of the Red Square or the banks of the Moskva River early in the morning, and it's hard to tell what century you're in.

Tsarist architecture, must-see churches, and glamorous shopping opportunities blend together for a visual experience you won't forget. For ideas on what to see and do while visiting Russia, here's our list of top tourist attractions in Moscow.

Marvel at the Size of the Kremlin

Catch a performance at the bolshoi theatre, shop at the luxurious gum, make your way into lenin's mausoleum, spend an hour (or three) at red square, discover history at the museum of cosmonautics, ride the stunning moscow metro, explore the moscow state integrated museum-reserve, spend a rainy day at the tretyakov gallery, walk up and down arbat street, stop by the vdnkh all-russian exhibition centre, wander around gorky park, where to stay in moscow for sightseeing, map of tourist attractions & things to do in moscow.

Kremlin

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

GUM

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Komsomolskaya Station on the Moscow metro

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

Kolomenskoye Estate

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

Tretyakov Gallery

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Night view of Arbat Street decorated for the holidays

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

VDNKh All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Friendship of the Peoples Fountain

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Main entrance gate to Gorky Park

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. There's free Wi-Fi and sockets for charging your phone, as well as many food stands and plenty of wild animals, including deer, rabbits, and pheasants.

Visitors can rent paddle boats and bicycles to explore the park-and from May to October, there is also an open-air movie theater, as well as scheduled presentations by street performers, musicians, and artists. Gorky Park attracts the young and old, so don't be surprised to see a mix of people exercising, playing chess, and sunbathing.
