Carolina up close
With historic buildings and picturesque landscaping, Carolina's campus is iconic, and some of the University's most beautiful spots are worth a closer look.
Moving forward with boldness
More than 225 years ago, a radical idea took root in North Carolina: higher education, funded by the people, for the people. As we enter the third decade of this millennium, the challenges we face today are great, but, as we have demonstrated for more than two centuries, we are built to face great challenges.
Timeless traditions
Take a sip from the Old Well on your first day of classes to get good grades. Sign your name on the bricks inside the Bell Tower as a senior. Relax in the sun on Polk Place. Carolina is filled with traditions - some that date back for decades and others that are new - that students cherish today.
Always a great day to be a Tar Heel
“It’s a great day to be a Tar Heel” is a phrase you’ll often hear around Carolina, and for a good reason. Every day, Tar Heels create a positive impact on the world by improving their communities and inspiring change through their talents. They’re artists, scientists, humanitarians, researchers and innovators doing extraordinary things.

Self-Guided Tour
If you're in Chapel Hill, explore some of our outdoor spaces with a self-guided tour.
Coker Arboretum
What do you do if you’re Carolina’s first botany professor, Dr. William Coker? Create a campus oasis with hundreds of native North Carolina trees, shrubs, and vines.
Franklin Street
Franklin Street is home to everything you’ll need as a student: coffee shops, restaurants, a movie theater, and music venues.
The Old Well
Carolina’s most famous landmark was the original water source for the University. Tradition says a drink from the Old Well on the first day of class brings good luck and a perfect GPA. (We also recommend studying.)
Welcome to Carolina’s main academic quad, named after alumnus and U.S. President James K. Polk. These buildings house departments and schools from Chemistry to Journalism. Carolina students can choose from more than 70 majors.
Carolina Union
This is Carolina’s ‘living room’ where students come together for study groups, free movie nights, art installations, and holiday gingerbread house building.
In this brick courtyard, campus thrives – you might see students campaigning for Student Body President, dance performances, or a charity lunch to help combat poverty. They say that in a single day, every student at Carolina will pass through the Pit.

Schedule a Visit
We love welcoming prospective students to Carolina Law for a visit. During the fall (mid-September through mid-November) and spring (mid-January through mid-April) semesters, visitors have the opportunity to attend an admissions session led by an admissions team member; tour the building with current students; and possibly observe a first-year law class (space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis).
Self-guided tours are the primary means of seeing the school from late April into early September, or on weekdays when the building is open but scheduled visits are not available. However, a member of the admissions team is happy to meet with you during this time to answer any questions about Carolina Law, the admissions process, or law school in general. Please let us know when you plan to stop by so we can welcome you accordingly.
For Spring 2024, in-person visits will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays (for admitted students ONLY) starting at 10:00am with a class observation and immediately followed by a tour of the law school building given by current students. Visits will conclude around 1:00pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. In-person visits will also be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays (all are welcome) starting at 11:00am with an admissions session and immediately followed by a tour of the law school building given by current students. For visitors not registered for a class observation on Tuesdays or Thursdays, their visit will conclude around 1:00pm. For those visitors registered for a class observation, their visit will conclude at 2:15pm.
Class observation registration is limited and on a first-come, first served basis. Due to space limitations, only prospective students will be permitted to observe a class. Guests, however, are invited to participate in all other aspects of the visit.
You must provide at least two business days’ notice when scheduling your in-person visit.

UNC Basketball: Giant Transfer Announces Arrival in Chapel Hill
UNC basketball is currently courting arguably its last shot at a premier center for next season.
- Author: Matt Giles
In this story:
During transfer season, visits get called off all the time, often at the last second when a target suddenly decides to commit elsewhere or check out some other suitor instead. So, even though former Rutgers big man Clifford Omoruyi recently reiterated his plan to be in Chapel Hill beginning Thursday, the fact that he confirmed his arrival on social media is a positive sign for the UNC basketball staff's still-solid standing in the high-profile race.
Omoruyi, a former four-star prep at Roselle Catholic (N.J.), is a 6-foot-11, 240-pounder from Nigeria and two-time Big Ten All-Defensive Team selection who entered the portal on March 20 with one year of eligibility remaining.
Just before noon on Thursday, the 22-year-old posted a clip on Instagram of his view sitting inside the Raleigh-Durham International Airport, less than 20 miles from the Dean E. Smith Center.
Cliff has arrived 👀👏🔥 pic.twitter.com/91WJxmrtdp — The Tar Heel Story (@tarheelstory) May 2, 2024
Following previous trips to Alabama, Georgetown, and Kansas State, he has confirmed that his visit with the Tar Heels will be the last in his recruitment before deciding where to spend his graduate campaign.
This past season, Clifford Omoruyi averaged 10.5 points and 8.3 rebounds for the Scarlet Knights. And he led the Big Ten with his impressive 2.9 blocks per game.
There's no doubt he's the primary target right now for UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis and his staff as they seemingly hope to find a big man worthy of potentially serving as the program's next starting center in place of outbound Tar Heel legend Armando Bacot.

Top player in 2025 class could visit UNC basketball in Fall
N orth Carolina has yet to land a prospect in the 2025 recruiting class but there's a long way to go in that cycle still. Hubert Davis and his staff have identified some top targets, including the No. 1 overall player in the class, AJ Dybantsa.
The small forward out of Napa, California currently plays at Prolific Prep and has 22 offers in his recruitment. As his recruitment continues on, things are starting to progress which includes visits. And for North Carolina, they could be in line for a visit this Fall.
Dybantsa talked to Travis Branham of 247Sports about his recruitment and he mentioned that he could set up a visit this Fall:
North Carolina:"Heard from him, I got offered towards the beginning of my Prolific season, they stay in contact with my dad. I might take a visit this fall but I will have to set that up with UNC, definitely."
Other programs involved in his recruitment include Arkansas , Kentucky , Auburn, and USC . The 6-foot-8 small forward has already visited USC and Auburn in the process.
Dybantsa is a recruit to keep an eye on for the Tar Heels moving forward and it will be a big plus if they can get him on campus to make an impression.
