Things to do on Quadra Island - A Paradise Island on Canada's West Coast

After our positive experience on Denman Island , we were excited to explore another of BC’s beautiful islands, Quadra Island, which is one of the Discovery Islands off Northern Vancouver Island.

I hadn’t heard much about Quadra Island – we were basically just going because we found a volunteering opportunity there through Help X . But I am so glad that we did visit, because Quadra Island is incredible, and it is pretty well under the radar for tourism.

I know the term ‘hidden gem’ is overused, but it really does describe Quadra so well.

Arriving on the Quadra Island Ferry

We took the short Quadra Island ferry ride from Campbell River to Quadra Island where our host, Linda, was waiting for us. The Quadra ferry comes into the community of Quathiaski Cove, one of the three main centers on the island, along with Heriot Bay and Cape Mudge.

We stopped to look around the small shopping center in Q Cove while Linda ran some errands. There was a fantastic bookshop specializing in British Columbia coastal books that I somehow managed not to buy, it always helps when you don’t actually have any money.

A Little Bit About Quadra Island

Quadra Island has 2700 year-round residents including the We Wai Kai band of the Laichwiltach People, part of the Kwa’ Kwa’ Ka’ Wa’Kw First Nation. It is the largest island in the Discovery Islands chain between Vancouver Island and the mainland.

There are a number of lakes on Quadra and over 200km of hiking trails through untouched forest – there are so many things to do on Quadra Island yet it is so relaxed as well. My kind of place.

Our Quadra Island Accommodation

Linda’s guesthouse was located on the other side of the island from Q Cove, in lovely Heriot Bay.

It is right on the water and offers a range of different accommodation choices including a float home (not in the water), a cottage, boathouse cabin, dorm rooms, apartments, and the main house with B&B rooms.

Linda has made it so cozy and I love that there are different types of accommodation at different prices. It is exactly the sort of place I would love to own myself one day.

Impossibly beautiful Quadra Island, BC

It really is incredibly scenic. The water is so still and clear and I wish it had been warm enough to swim.

The boathouse is along a beachside path and, although small, it is a completely self-contained studio-style apartment comprising a raised double bed, a cute little kitchen, and a dining table with an outdoor shower and outhouse toilet.

Trav was brave and showered outside every day but it was too cold for me! I used the shower in the main house and even had a couple of highly relaxing baths in one of the B&B rooms, what a treat!

We saw bald eagles and seals out the window, only meters away. Watching the sunrise through the morning mist was a great way to start each day.

She is a kayaking Quadra Island guide and cook in summer and is a cook at a ski lodge in winter. She is very good at what she does.

We had fresh salmon, homemade soups and salads, apple crumble, locally picked mushroom pasta, and slow-cooked stew.

If it started getting cold in Denman, then it really settled in on Quadra – Quadra Island weather is cold in October!

It was lucky I got warm clothes at the Free Store on Denman because I needed to wear pretty much all of them to keep warm on the frosty mornings and chilly nights as the season of crimson leaves and pumpkins gripped the island.

Despite the cold, it was sunny nearly every day that we were there, in stark contrast to our soggy sojourn on Denman.

Volunteering on Quadra Island, BC

As we were at the guesthouse in the offseason, there weren’t any guests staying for the week we were there. Because there were no rooms to clean, we did some odd jobs such as weeding, creating a rock garden, cooking, and cleaning, and Linda even took us mushroom picking.

Chanterelle mushrooms grow in the forests of Quadra in the fall. These unusual-looking, bright orange fungi grow in clusters amongst the moss at the base of trees. We went to an overgrown section of the forest that Linda had picked before.

There were so many large mushrooms and within half an hour of clambering over fallen, rotting trees and moss-covered undergrowth, we had filled a bucket each.

I lost the others and it was fun exploring the hidden forested world by myself. I wouldn’t have been surprised to bump into a fairy or a gnome, it was certainly a fairy tale setting.

Best Things To Do on Quadra Island

If you love the outdoors as we do, then there are so many things to do on Quadra Island!

Hang Out in Stunning Heriot Bay

Heriot Bay with its natural beauty just invited a stroll. On a few afternoons after finishing work for the day, we went for a wander around the streets and harbor of this tiny community.

Heriot Bay Inn and Pub on Quadra Island, BC

The Heriot Bay Inn and Pub is nestled in a prime position, perched above the branch-strewn and pebbled beach, awash with the colors of the season from the stately maple trees fringing the property.

We sat under the brilliant-colored trees and went for walks along the curved beach, checking out the weather-worn fishing boats in the harbor.

Hiking to the Top of Chinese Mountain

Hiking on Quadra Island was number one on our list so on our day off Linda dropped us at the Chinese Mountain trailhead, one of the most popular Quadra Island hikes.

The trail leads to the summit of the north and south peaks of Chinese Mountain, with beautiful ocean and mountain views.

It was a fairly easy hike past yellow-leaved trees and exposed moss-covered rock. We went up to the north peak first which was a bit of a detour off the main loop trail.

There is a beautiful view at the top of Discovery Passage and Vancouver Island. We didn’t see anyone else out walking despite it being a beautiful, sunny Thanksgiving Sunday. Once we got to the top of the south peak we finally saw a few people around.

The view from the top of the south peak was spectacular, looking out over the west coast of Quadra Island, Morte Lake, Rebecca Spit, Discovery Passage, and the Coast Mountains of Vancouver Island.

We ate our packed lunch at the top and checked out all of the viewpoints before starting the second half of the loop to hike back down.

We hitched once we got back on the road and scored a ride straight away with another couple that had also just finished the hike.

Explore Beautiful Rebecca Spit

Rebecca Spit is another definite highlight of Quadra Island. It is a narrow 2km sand spit with trails and driftwood-strewn beaches.

Walking Rebecca Spit on Quadra Island, Canada

Linda took us there on our first afternoon for a wander. More fantastic views of the snow-capped Coast Mountains, the Breton Islands, and Heriot Bay.

It was a fantastic introduction to the natural beauty of this island. We sat on the beach and watched the ferry silently round the tip of Rebecca Spit, making its trip to Cortes Island.

Kayaking Around Heriot Island

A fun afternoon was spent kayaking around Heriot Island using the kayaks from the guesthouse.

I am not a keen kayaker usually. It is an activity that I always think will be great fun but when it comes down to it, I haven’t enjoyed most of my kayaking experiences, mainly because I get seasick.

Yep, I get seasick from kayaking. Weird huh? I also get seasick when I (try to) surf. I really love the sea but it doesn’t like me.

Kayaking Quadra Island in Canada

The water is so calm in the bay so I decided to give it another try and I am so glad that I did. We only went out for an hour but it was such a beautiful experience.

We saw hundreds of jellyfish swimming at different depths in the inky black water and a great blue heron perched to dive for fish on the rocky island. I will definitely go kayaking again but perhaps only when the water is calm.

Attend a Community Event on Quadra Island

We like to attend community events when visiting small towns if possible, as it is a fun way to get more of a feel for what life is like for the people who live there.

Like on Denman, Heriot Bay is a small, close-knit community and there are a lot of fun activities held nearly every day of the week.

Heriot Bay on Quadra Island is a close-knit community

The movie was called ‘My Cousin Lived Next Door’ and it is about two cousins who grew up together with one ending up as a professional in Vancouver and the other as a drug addict.

It was well shot and interesting but I found it a bit hard to follow in regards to the same character being played by three different people at different ages. They gave awards to the cast and crew who attended after the film finished. It was a nice feeling to be a part of it.

Another local event, the ‘meat draw’, was a raffle held at the Canadian Legion every Saturday evening. Linda took us along with her for a drink and the chance to win some meat.

View over Rebecca Spit on Quadra Island Canada

The first couple of draws we didn’t win anything but on the last draw, we won a massive ham and some sausages. Trav thought that having a raffle for meat is pretty funny but as a New Zealander, this is pretty normal to me.

Linda’s friend Frank lives down the road and is a very talented Stonemason. As well as building the outdoor fireplace at Linda’s, he was building one in his own backyard along with a pizza oven and invited us all over for a drink by the fire one night.

It was a cold evening but after sitting by the roaring fire for a while we warmed up pretty fast. He had done an amazing job so far and it was nice to sit outside on a cold Fall night, kept warm and entranced by the orange flames against the black night sky.

Celebrating Thanksgiving on Quadra Island

When we were looking at flights back to New Zealand for October, I was adamant that we fly after Canadian Thanksgiving which is on the second Monday of the month.

Thanksgiving celebrates the harvest and blessings of the past year and is a time for family to come together to feast on turkey and pumpkin pie.

It is the favorite holiday of a lot of Canadians and I can see why, as it is a time to enjoy spending quality time and eating delicious food with family and friends, without the religious connotation and pressure/cost of gift-giving.

When we were living in Vancouver in 2009 we didn’t celebrate it, so I was so excited to be part of this fantastic celebration this time around. Linda invited Frank, her son with his girlfriend and their newborn baby, her niece and husband, her friend Leslie and Leslie’s woofer.

We had a really fun evening starting with some beers out by the outdoor fireplace that Frank had built, followed by a massive turkey, a baked ham (that Trav and I had won at the meat draw), lots of veggies, and two pumpkin pies.

Everyone was so nice and we felt so welcome. It felt special to be involved in this quintessential Canadian experience.

Final Thoughts on Quadra Island

I would like to come back and work for Linda again one summer to hopefully learn more about how the business is run and to get some hands-on experience. Any excuse really to get to return to Quadra Island.

One week on Quadra Island was definitely not enough time, especially as we only had one full day off. It is such a beautiful island with so much to explore.

Beautiful Heriot Bay on Quadra Island, Canada

I recommend to anyone that loves nature and hates crowds to make the time to visit gorgeous Quadra Island – you won’t regret it.

How To Plan Your Own Trip to Quadra Island

If, after reading this post, you are now itching to get to Quadra Island – I don’t blame you. I highly recommend doing a Help Exchange through Help X or Workaway to get a better feel for the community there.

If that is not up your alley, there are tons of gorgeous places to stay, delicious restaurants and cafes to eat at, and fun things to do on Quadra Island that you can arrange independently.

The Best Quadra Island Accommodation

I highly recommend staying around Heriot Bay, although Quathiaski Cove is a lovely village too .

A great option in Heriot Bay is the cozy Heriot Bay Inn . It has an excellent location, right on the water, and the pub is a great spot to meet locals and other visitors. There are standard hotel rooms as well as one and two-bedroom cottages to rent. The Inn also offers tent and RV camping.

Heriot Bay on Quadra Island, Canada

If you are wanting to stay in the other hub of the island, Quathiaski Cove, then High Point Resort is a fantastic choice. The property is oceanfront with a hot tub and jacuzzi.

For self-contained and affordable rental homes, these are the best choices on Quadra Island:

  • Forest Raven : An artistically crafted cabin located on a wooded property overlooking a stream. There is a sitting room, wood stove, and full kitchen as well as forest views.
  • Oceanfront Beach House: Watch whales and eagles right from the patio that has awesome ocean views. The Oceanfront Beach House is fully self-contained and is a peaceful getaway.
  • Patio Suite at Kingfisher Pond Guesthouse : This newly built one-bedroom suite is located on a forested property and has a private covered patio and full kitchen. There is also a lovely Veranda room available at the guesthouse.

The most affordable option is to camp, and there is a well-positioned campground, We Wai Kai Campsite , right by Rebecca Spit which offers tent and RV sites. There are showers and laundry facilities on site.

Getting to Quadra Island

It can be tricky to get to Quadra Island if you don’t have a car, but it is possible to catch a bus from Victoria or Nanaimo to Campbell River with Island Link – there are usually a couple of buses per day and you need to book online at least 24 hours in advance.

If you are coming from Vancouver, catch the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo , then either drive or catch the bus to Campbell River.

Once in Campbell River, you can catch the Quadra Island ferry the short distance to the island, either on foot on with your car. You can’t book this ferry online so just pay on arrival at the terminal.

Ferries go every hour or so from around 6.30 am till 10.30 pm and the crossing only takes ten minutes.

Getting Around Quadra Island

If you don’t have a car with you on the island then the best way to get around is to walk or to hitch – it’s very common on the Gulf Islands and I felt safe when I did it, although whether you are comfortable doing it or not is up to you.

The Best Travel and Health Insurance for Your Trip

Make sure you get travel and health insurance before your Quadra Island trip, just to be on the safe side. Safety Wing  is my go-to and they are cheap and easy to claim with.

Safety Wing also allows you to sign up when you are already traveling, unlike a lot of other travel insurance providers.

8 Fun Things to Do on Quadra Island, BC

8 Fun Things to Do on Quadra Island, BC

Quadra Island, part of the lesser-known Discovery Islands, is a peaceful destination located just east of Campbell River, Vancouver Island. Unlike the more popular Gulf Islands, Quadra offers a quiet escape with fewer tourists. It may not have the vibrant food and art scene some other islands do, but it shines with its friendly locals, unique activities and remote wilderness.

We set off in our Delica campervan for a laidback camping trip with friends, exploring forest roads, enjoying quaint eateries, playing mini golf and unwinding in a sauna.

We list 8 fun things to do on Quadra Island - they were our favourite things we did on the island.

8 Unique things to do in Quadra Island

1. Play mini golf at an enchanted woods-themed course

day trip to quadra island

Recently, a brand new 18-hole mini golf course opened at the Quadra Island Golf Course. Its fantasy theme, complete with whimsical driftwood creatures made by a local artist, is a visual treat in itself.

A round of mini golf costs $12 per adult. It was one of our favourite activities we did on the island.

The golf course also opened a restaurant called The Q this year. After your game, have a glass of BC wine or a bite to eat on the patio.

2. Explore the backcountry roads and find a serene spot to camp

day trip to quadra island

Car camping in the rugged north end of the island

As the largest of the Discovery Islands, Quadra Island offers excellent wilderness camping. Because of its forest service roads, it's easy to reach offbeat areas of the island. As you head north of Heriot Bay, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and remote with dense forests, lakes and rocky shorelines.

We recommend bringing a 4x4 vehicle for exploring . We found a nice oceanside spot for camping one night and another spot partly up a mountain with sweeping views.

🗺️ Select satellite mode on Google Maps so you can see the forest service roads - they won't show up in default mode.

✔️ Top Tip: pay special attention to roads that go up in elevation, this is how you can find nice spots to camp with views. Logging roads that lead to lakes or near the ocean can also have good places to camp.

3. Sauna on Heriot Bay

day trip to quadra island

Soak in the heat with a private 2-hour session with Embrace Sauna . Their handmade cedar barrel sauna is parked at Heriot Bay Inn with access to the water. It gets properly hot with its wood-fired stove and a water bucket is provided to pour water onto the rocks to create steam.

The 2-hour private session rate is $159 and the sauna can fit 4 people comfortably.

4. Walk along a 2km sandspit on the ocean

day trip to quadra island

Rebecca Spit Marine Provincial Park is a narrow sandspit extending out into the ocean with beaches on both sides. Enjoy views of the ocean, mountains and surrounding islands as you walk along the shoreline.

5. Eat fresh seafood with harbour views at Coveside Seafood Eatery

day trip to quadra island

Sit along the harbourfront at Coveside Seafood Eatery and enjoy fish & chips, fish tacos, or their specialty Coveside Poutine made with crab bisque, pico de gallo and cheese curds. Their sauces are made in house.

They only have outdoor seating, so go on a nice day and enjoy those views! Or, you can take away.

6. Enjoy a tasting at SouthEnd Farm Winery & Distillery

day trip to quadra island

SouthEnd Farm Winery & Distillery

Drive up the farm road to SouthEnd Farm, a family winery and distillery offering wine tastings and cocktail flights. We loved the vintage glassware they used to serve drinks. If you can only pick one tasting, we recommend the cocktail flight.

Pick a spot on their sunny patio overlooking the vineyard and enjoy the sun. They also offer some picnic snacks, like cheese, crackers, salmon pâté and charcuterie.

7. Eat delectable cronuts from Island Farm and Table

day trip to quadra island

Pop into Island Farm and Table and treat yourself to their cronuts - deep fried croissant pieces covered in cinnamon sugar. Mmm!

8. Enjoy patio drinks at the HBI Pub

day trip to quadra island

Grab a pint at the pub at Heriot Bay Inn and enjoy the marine views. It's a local favourite. The inn was first established in 1895 and rebuilt in 1912 after a fire.

The pub has a covered patio as well as picnic table seating on the grass in the front. It also hosts music events on some weekends - check out their event calendar to see what's on.

We were parched and sweaty, our skin on the cusp of sunburned and certainly damp. Inside Kameleon Food & Drink in Quathiaski Cove, the light was dim, a stark contrast to the last couple of hours we'd just spent easing our way down a root-gnarled hillside then gingerly picking our way across rock-studded shore to stand in the salty waters of Open Bay. We had whiled away our time approximating swimming as seals searched for their lunch nearby, as an anchored boat bobbed in the late morning sun.

After departing Quadra Island's only sandy beach and making the drive down a gravel roadway, then the forested and mountainous twists of Hyacinth Road,  we were back "in town," and ready for a quick lunch before heading back to our home base for the week at Taku Resort & Marina . It was a July Monday, and while there were only a handful of other diners in the restaurant, it soon became clear that lunch wasn't going to be quick.

Panic set in. What if we couldn't get out of there in the next 30 minutes? I flashed back to a parting conversation with the manager of Taku Resort as we'd headed out that morning, making a plan to meet up "after lunch" to collect the prawn traps we'd set the previous afternoon. What if "after lunch" crept into more "early afternoon" territory? I'd have to call to let him know we'd be late.

I glanced down at my phone. "No Service" read the top left corner, as it had for so much of our time so far on Quadra.

Then it dawned on me: He's not pacing, wondering where we are. No one expects a phone call when there's little to no cell service island-wide. I was being a true "city slicker," and it was time to let go and just be .

We were on "island time."

Island time is a state of mind, and for the most part, it's the governing mode for being on Quadra Island. Located just across the water from Campbell River (a brief 10-minute ferry ride gets you there, with ferries running hourly and the fee only charged from the Campbell River port), Quadra is the gateway to the Discovery Islands , popular with boaters, adventurers, off-the-grid-ers, and anyone looking for some serious decompression in a spectacularly and ruggedly beautiful place.

Outdoor adventures and other explorations

Quadra is a nature-lover's paradise. Boaters often drop anchor here as a necessary last stock-up spot before setting course north into the Discovery Islands, as the island boasts a grocery store and other vital businesses. Kayaking, hiking, canoeing, biking, paddleboarding, camping, fishing, golfing - pretty much you name it and you can enjoy it on Quadra .

That said, one doesn't have to be the full-on outdoorsy type to dip their toes into the natural wonders of Quadra. Novice kayakers can sign up for short outings and lessons, while there are plenty of scenic walks and hikes that aren't expert-level climbs and hauls. Lakes and ocean provide plenty of opportunities to take a dip, and it takes zero skills or fitness to sit and drink in Quadra's stunning sunrises and sunsets.

Sunset on Rebecca Spit. Photo by Lindsay William-Ross/Vancouver Is Awesome

Rebecca Spit is probably one of Quadra's most treasured outdoor spaces, and you can get to this wooded jut of land on Heriot Bay on the island's central east side via car, boat, or foot - the latter in particular if you've got your tent or RV set up there for a stay. Take a stroll around the spit, with or without your pup, throw some rocks, or check out the Trout and Trivet food truck parked on site when they're up and running. (Sadly they were closed up during our visit due to catering obligations.) The Spit is the spot to do some serious beachcombing while on Quadra.

When it comes to trails and places to cool off in the water, there are a number of options - there are 200 kilometres of hiking trails on the island. We opted to take the advice and directions of a blogger who enjoyed their visit to Open Bay, and likewise, we found ourselves basking in the sunshine and salty waters of the beautiful little spot, while tiny crabs passed by our toes and an eagle watched from its perch high, high above the serene zone.

A colourful sight along the path that leads you down to Open Bay. Photo by Lindsay William-Ross/Vancouver Is Awesome

Other worthwhile spots to check out include the Cape Mudge Lighthouse , at the southern tip of Quadra. The heritage lighthouse is just over a century old, but remains an active military location, so you'll have to check it out from the other side of the fence.

Here you can peer across the water at Campbell River (which looks dramatically urban compared to where you stand, I guarantee) and also enjoy the rocky shoreline and windy trail walks.

Cape Mudge is a part of the territory of the Kwa'Kwa'Ka' Wa'Kw Nation, whose history is there to discover at the Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre . Also in the region are some outdoor spaces, including a garden and gathering space across the street from the museum that also includes an interactive video display.

The Cape Mudge area features many petroglyphs - ancient rock carvings - from the First Nations people indigenous to the area. These can be photographed, however rubbings are not permitted. There are nearly 100 petroglyphs on Quadra Island, scattered on 13 various sites.

For a look at contemporary art and artisans, Quadra has a vivid community of painters, carvers, potters, and other visual artists and craftspeople. You can tour studios and workshops, many of which have beckoning roadside signs you'll pass as you wind your way through town. Some of the shops in the plaza at Quathiaski Cove also sell wares created by local artists, too.

Where to eat

There are a number of restaurants on Quadra, with the majority easily classified as casual, though if you're there more than a couple of days, you can expect to plan on bringing in supplies and/or hitting one of the two Tru Value Foods small grocery stores on the island - there's one each at Heriot Bay and Quathiaski Cove.

The busy kitchen at Java Bay Cafe. Photo by Lindsay William-Ross/Vancouver Is Awesome

Inside the Heriot Bay Tru Value Foods' building is a local gem for coffee and baked goods called the Java Bay Cafe . It's basically a one-woman show, as the owner moves about what's basically the equivalent of an apartment kitchen (with the regular ol' kitchen stove to match) whipping up sweet and savoury scones, fresh fruit crisps, and heaps of other goodies along with a plethora of coffee and tea drinks. This cash-only spot is one place you can sign on to wifi on Quadra, and it can get pretty busy in the morning - but remember, you're on "island time" so try not to sweat it.

Down in Quathiaski Cove, just up from where the ferry to and from Campbell River docks, there are a few eateries to check out. The aforementioned Kameleon Food & Drink is a great place for soups, sandwiches, and salads; their generous plates focus on fresh ingredients and global flavours.

A couple of doors down is The Clove , a popular spot for pizza and drinks. They've got an ever-changing specials board for entrees and appetizers using seasonal and special ingredients, as well as lots of great share plates.

Look for inventive items like BBQ Duck Wings to nibble on before you tuck into their pan pizzas. Hang out here and check out the local art on the walls and play some board games while you wait, or order your eats to go.

Without a doubt one of the busiest and most storied spots on Quadra is Herons at the Heriot Bay Inn . This ever-so-slightly more upscale spot (which is still pretty buttoned down, all things considered) is coveted for their ample patio overlooking Heriot Bay, and on weekends in peak season, reservations are absolutely necessary. There's a 19+ pub on site, too, at this haunted hotel where you can grab a drink and wait for a table, or get your bite to eat there.

You can get all sorts of bistro and west coast fare here, including dishes made with B.C. seafood - something that is ironically hard to get your hands on while on Quadra, so this is where you might want to get the seafood pasta or steamed clams or mussels, for sure.

While fishing and shellfish harvesting are abundant on Quadra, the product is all sent to the mainland for processing by law, which means you won't find a fish monger on the island that sells to the general public. Sawmill Bay , for example, harvests and sells oysters to restaurants and other clients, and while they have a storefront near Quathiaski Cove, it's rarely open.

If you want to do your own fishing, be sure to adhere to all local regulations; fishing excursions can be arranged with the resorts on the island, too.

One spot to enjoy Quadra eats and one other locally-made product is at Southend Farm Winery . The island's only winery is a very relaxed, no frills operation that produces small batches of a handful of varietals, sold in re-usable stopper bottles with paper tag labels.

You can try what's on tap in the casual tasting room, or order up wines by the glass or bottle along with some charcuterie and picnic-style eats to enjoy on the patio, which overlooks the vineyard.

There are a couple of other options for eats on Quadra, including Amped (a hybrid deli/juice bar/health food store); Q-Beans (for coffee and snacks at the ferry terminal); Coveside Seafood Eatery (fish & chips, chowder, and poutine at the ferry terminal); Yellow Dog (bulk food shop and ice cream scoop shop); and Café Aroma (a spot for coffee, baked goods, and breakfast).

Where to stay

You can set up camp at several spots on Quadra, or opt to stay at one of the island's resort sites. We were guests at Taku Resort , a recently renovated site on the Heriot Bay side with a private dock, ample grounds, and several options for stays. There are beachfront A-frame cabins that can fit up to eight people, terrace-level suites in a variety of configurations, a treehouse suite for two, camping and RV sites, and a two-suite beach house.

Breakfast on the balcony of the Upper Beach House at Taku Resort. Photo by Lindsay William-Ross/Vancouver Is Awesome

We stayed in the beach house in the upper suite, which is the property's prime spot (though we did get to check out the terrace suites and those are also very well-appointed and smartly laid-out, with everything you need for a few days by the shore in perfect creature comfort).

With two bedrooms each with its own en suite bathroom, a full open concept kitchen, dining, and living space, a side deck, and 180-degree waterfront views, this modern, airy suite is a real showstopper. Even though you're on vacation, you'll want to plan to be up to grab a cup of coffee and watch the sunrise from the deck or living room, and the kitchen is a dream for whipping up easy meals to enjoy in your own space and at your own pace.

Sunrise view from the Upper Beach House suite at Taku Resort & Marina. Photo by Lindsay William-Ross/Vancouver Is Awesome

On site you'll find amenities like a hot tub, tennis courts, basketball courts, a bocce ball court, playground, swimming area, and of course the dock. The staff can help you arrange anything you need for your stay, from tips on spots to hike or explore, to board games you can borrow for your cabin or suite, or to get you set up on an excursion or experience. They've got wifi, but they'll be the first to admit it is super spotty; that's really just how it is on all of Quadra - you come here to unplug.

Quadra is really a very special place, and Taku can easily become the spot to which you return time and time again. It's one that puts nature right up front, and relaxation and recreation a priority - both things that are the very essence of "island time." Disconnect from tech and city life, and connect with the outdoors and the people you're with.

Getting there

Quadra Island is easily accessed via BC Ferries , departing from Campbell River and in peak season running every hour during the day. This is a small ferry that you cannot reserve in advance, so be sure to factor in a likely one- to two- sailing wait to board for the 10-minute journey. Your fee is collected only from Campbell River; no fees are collected from Quadra Island. Once on island, you can get around easily via your car, by bicycle, or on foot, depending on the scope of your plans for the trip.

Surge Narrows Marine Park Kayak Day Trips

Sea kayak day trips exploring marine life and wild nature near quadra island in british columbia, canada..

Get a little further out on a Quadra Island kayak day tour! In the heart of British Columbia’s outer Discovery Islands, our kayak day trips offer a great opportunity to learn the basics of sea kayaking while exploring the natural beauty of a remote BC marine park and an area rich with cultural history.

Our kayak day trips begin at Discovery Islands Lodge near the end of Surge Narrows Road on northern Quadra Island — a beautiful 30-minute rainforest drive from the island community of Heriot Bay BC. By basing our tours from northern Quadra Island, we explore an area that is quieter and less populated than other day tour locations.

sea kayak day trips, bc, desolation sound, discovery islands

We’ll explore the Settlers Pass area where steamships used to provide regular service in a pioneer era and wonder at the much older native pictograph on a rocky outcrop in the pass. In our sea kayaks we’ll navigate through the small islets and tidal back-eddies of Surge Narrows Marine Park. Kayaking in the shallow waters of the tidal passage, we’ll have great opportunities to view the wonderful diversity of colourful marine life for which the area is famous.

Given the abundance of wildlife, you’re sure to see many shore and sea birds and likely to spy a host of seals and other wild creatures. There’s a chance that dolphins, porpoise, and if we’re very lucky whales will join us on our kayaking route. We’ll take breaks to explore points of interest, enjoy a little beachcombing and savour the ambience of the area. Mid-day we will pull out on a delightful beach to enjoy a delicious & wholesome lunch.

Throughout the route, our knowledgeable kayak guides will enhance your experience with colourful stories about local history, ecology, and island life. All of our kayak guides are certified by the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of BC, and are experienced and thoroughly familiar with the area. You can expect to learn a lot, and feel safe, secure and well looked-after!

Our guided kayak day trips are not difficult, and suitable for nearly everybody. Families are welcome, and our guides are also happy to add extra challenge and skill building opportunities for more experienced paddlers.

Kayak daytrips include a hearty lunch.

Our launching facility at Taku Resort is very comfortable and ideal…the docks have carpeted kayak ramps and all! We are pleased to offer this service to some of our guests who maybe are feeling a little unsure about getting into a kayak for their first time!

Quadra Island Classic

$140 for adults, $125 for kids 12 and under

Certified guide, lunch, PFD, kayak, paddle and all safety equipment

This is the ultimate Quadra Island kayaking experience! A full day of kayaking, beachcombing, swimming, and wildlife viewing makes this a must to do while visiting our island paradise. Don’t worry if you have never kayaked before. This tour is great for first-timers.

Each trip we offer includes a thorough kayaking lesson on the dock to make sure that everybody is comfortable and ready to go. Here you will learn the safety aspects of this activity, some of the gear considerations and proper paddling techniques. Your certified and knowledgeable guides will make sure that your kayak is fitted properly and that your sitting position is correct. After the orientation session we hit the water and practice our new skills!

There are several different route options available on the full day tour including: a white sand beach in Open Bay, an open water crossing out to the Breton Islands for a visit with the local seal colony, or perhaps meander along the shoreline towards Hyacinthe Bay to learn about a first nations village site and view an active salmon stream. There are plenty of options to interest all people! The full day tour gives you enough time to really get out there and explore the area. We stop on a beach or a remote island for our lunch break where people get the chance to rest, swim, stretch, beach comb or just relax and take in the views.

As for what wildlife you will see paddling around Quadra Island, there is never a dull moment. We see lots of soaring eagles, Oystercatchers, herons, cormorants, gulls, ducks, geese, harbour seals, sea lions, dolphins, porpoise and sometimes even whales! There is always a wide variety of inter-tidal life to learn about including sea stars, sea urchins, jellyfish, crabs etc. The mountain views are stunning and the guides have lots of interesting info to share. This full day tour is an experience that you won’t forget!

3-Hour Tours

Morning: 9am-12pm / Afternoon: 2pm-5pm

$100 for adults, $85 for kids 12 and under

This is an excellent option for people on limited time, or if you are not sure if the full day is for you. With morning/afternoon AND sunset departures it is easy to make arrangements to get out on the water. We start this tour with a short lesson on the dock to go over the elements of kayaking including safety issues, proper paddling techniques, steering and stability tips.

For the half-day paddle we usually head over to the Breton Islands to visit our local seal colony or we head out to Turtle Island and take the short hike to the top to enjoy the stunning view. We always take a short rest stop on shore to get out, stretch our legs and enjoy the hearty snack with spectacular views!

As for the wildlife – we love our friends the harbour seals and have a visit with them on just about every tour. In summer they are sunning themselves on the warm rocks and in July they are having their pups! Paddling around Quadra Island there is never a dull moment. We regularly see soaring eagles, red billed oystercatchers, majestic Great Blue Heron, cormorants, gulls, ducks and geese. Sandy collars of eggs from the Moon Snail are found on beaches in July. This is also a prime time to spot anemones and starfish, sea urchins, oysters and crabs. The seaweed is in full bloom. We always keep our eyes open for the chance of spotting dolphins, porpoise and sometimes even whales! The guides always have lots of interesting info to share. The mountain scenery is stunning. This is a wonderful time to be on the ocean.

This tour offers an opportunity to still get out and explore the area without spending the whole day on the water.

Sunset Kayaking Tour

Jun & Jul: 6pm–9pm / Aug 5pm–8pm

This paddle takes place in the calm of the early evening. Watch the wildlife come out to play in the ever changing evening sky. As the sun goes down, the mountains begin to glow and it truly is a magical paddle. This is an evening ritual not to be missed.

We start this tour with a lesson on the dock to go over the elements of kayaking including safety issues, proper paddling techniques, steering and balance tips. For the sunset paddle we usually head over to the Breton Islands to visit our local seal colony or we head to Turtle Island and take the five minute hike to the top for the stunning view. Either way we always take a nice rest stop on shore to get out, stretch our legs and enjoy the hearty snack with spectacular views!

In the evening there is a calm quiet on the water. We may see soaring eagles enjoying the night sky, oystercatchers relaxing on rocks, herons standing tall to take in the sunset, cormorants, gulls, ducks and geese flying by. We nearly always see seals hanging out on the rocks. And in July these harbour seals are having their pups! There is always the magical chance of spotting dolphins, porpoise and sometimes even whales! Of course our friends the sea stars, sea urchins, anemones, and jellyfish are always there to entertain us. The coastal mountains take on an impressive glow as the sun goes down over Vancouver Island. This tour is an excellent opportunity to have a magical end to a day here on Quadra Island.

Sea Kayaking around Quadra Island

The maze of protected channels, fjordal inlets, islands and the intricate shorelines of Quadra Island and the neighbouring Discovery Islands are a paddlers dream come true. The surrounding scenery of towering mountain spires of the mainland Coast Range, verdant forests and secluded beaches and coves are ideal for both the novice paddler looking for a quick introduction to this popular west coast activity and the experienced adventurer seeking to explore this beautiful and rugged part of the British Columbia Coast.

day trip to quadra island

If you are planning your own trip to paddle in the Discovery Islands you'll receive a warm welcome from the local tour guides who can help with that extra bit of local knowledge, charts, weather forecasts and tidal current charts. The map below shows some of the trips possible around Quadra Island highlighting Kayak put-ins, parking, camp sites and a few of the places to take extra care with currents and tidal rapids. Although the Discovery Islands are for the most part sheltered on the 'inside passage' the weather can blow up into serious storms and the narrow waterways create boiling tidal rapids and whirlpools which can create challenging paddling conditions for even the most experienced kayaker.

There are excellent day tours from Heriot Bay and Surge Narrows amongst the exquisite islands and channels surrounding Quadra Island. Highlight day-trip areas include the Breton Islands, Drew Harbour, Surge Narrows, Octopus Islands and Granite Bay.

Generally the sea conditions and weather, especially in summer are calm making for some perfect paddling. Of course conditions can change rapidly so for your early experiences joining a guided group is highly recommended. In places surging tidal rapids are an experienced paddlers playground.

Keep a look out for wildlife while on the water. Bald eagles, seals, sea lions, otters and great blue herons are all frequently sighted. It's a lucky day that see dolphins, orcas or whales pass by, and it could happen! There's much to see and explore while kayaking aroiund Quadra Island. So much that you may find yourself lingering for the magic hour of the day to watch the sunset from your kayak.
