Campervan North America offers 5 different camper van models to choose from, including a converted Dodge Promaster, Mercedes Sprinter, and Ford Transit. Many of their vans were purchased new and then converted so they’re peppier and have lower miles than some other options you might find.

Their vans sleep up to 5 people depending on the model. The interiors are clean and simple; some models have kitchens and baths and some don’t. During the high season, they have a 7-night minimum and a 4-night minimum rental for the rest of the year. Rates start at $100/night although they offer discounts for rental periods longer than 15 days.

VanCraft Sprinter Campervan Rentals

• Rental Locations: San Diego CA, Denver CO, and Salt Lake City UT
• Types of camper vans: Mercedes Sprinter camper vans
• Price: starting at $59/night

VanCraft offers 3 models of campervans for rent: long-wheelbase Sprinters, short-wheelbase Sprinters, and Micro Campervans. All of the vans include a full-sized bed, off-grid solar power, refrigerator, fully stocked kitchen, outdoor shower, and camping basics. You can also choose from add-ons like an optional toilet, bike rack, or rooftop tent

Boho Camper Vans has a fleet of Dodge Promaster vans that they built out themselves, each designed with their unique boho flare. These camper vans are equipped with running water, an outdoor shower, stove, privacy curtains, bedding, cookware, camping chairs, and a portable cooler. Just minutes away from the Phoenix airport, you can live your boho dreams for around $209/day.

They are also starting to offer van rentals by owner out of San Diego, CA.

Lost Camper Van Rentals

Lost Camper is all about comfort and affordability. They offer Ford Transit rentals and a variety of Dodge Minivan rentals starting at $39/day, making this a good budget camper van rental company. All their campervan rentals include unlimited miles in their daily rates, as well as bedding, kitchen kits, and basic camping equipment like a table and chairs. Most of their vans have sinks and awnings (be sure to check the specific model) and all have an inside double bed, dining table, privacy curtains, and a cooler at minimum (some have refrigerators).

Trekker Vans Ford Transit Rentals

Trekker Vans prides itself on being a bootstrapped, locally owned and operated business. The owners are avid outdoors people, so they’re always happy to help you plan your adventure. 

All their camper van rentals are Ford Transits equipped with bedding, curtains, cookware, stove, refrigerator, sink with running water, camping chairs, and a table. The dinette transforms into a queen-size bed that sleeps 2-3 people, and if you need room for more, they’ll add on a rooftop tent. Depending on your party size, you can customize your seating to accommodate 2 or 4 people.

Pricing starts at $99/night with a minimum of three nights. During the high season, the prices will be about twice as much. If you’re looking for a San Francisco camper van rental company right near the airport, this is a great choice.

Ondevan Campervan Rentals

Voyager Campervans is based in Minneapolis Minnesota making it a great camper van rental company option for outdoor adventures in the state including to the Boundary Waters . Their Dodge Promaster City camper van rentals are compact and equipped with linens, cooking utensils, and cooking fuel. The daily rental rates start at $59 per night for a 2-person campervan rental and $159 per night for a 4-person camper van rental. They have a 2-5 day minimum depending on the season.

Rocky Mountain Campervans Rentals

Another family-owned and operated business, Rocky Mountain Campervans rents luxury conversion vans and vintage Volkswagen vans. Tierra Traveler

Vander Outdoors

• Rental Locations:  Washington, DC and Alexandria, Virginia

Vander Outdoors , a locally owned campervan rental company in the DC area, includes a fleet of 2- and 4-passenger camper vans, all under 18 feet long for stress-free driving, easy parking, and great fuel economy over 25mpg.  All of their vans come fully equipped with a stove, sink, fridge, cookware, bedding, and basic camping gear. 

Prices start at $99 per night and they have a 2-night minimum in the low season and a 3-night minimum in the high season. These campervans are great for exploring out through the Shenandoah Valley, down the Blue Ridge Parkway, or along the Atlantic coast from Acadia National Park in Maine to the Outer Banks in North Carolina.

Vegas Campers

• Rental Locations: Las Vegas, NV
• Type of camper vans: Dodge Ram camper vans

Vegas Campers offers micro campers that sleep and seat up to two people that are perfect for Southwest road trips. Their vans get incredible gas mileage in comparison to larger RVs, are much easier to handle on the road, and come fully stocked with sleeping bags, linens, a stove, sink, refrigerator, couch/bed, outdoor shower, a solar powered electronics charging station, all sorts of lighting, dishes, cookware, and more.

The team provides online instructional videos which means you don’t waste time any time on the ground… you’ll be able to “grab the keys and go” because you will already know how everything works. They have a 3-night minimum (though they allow 2 nights at the same rate as 3) and prices start at $99 per night.

A great campervan alternative we found is Pacific Overlander (www.pacificoverlander.com). Their vehicles are totally tricked out and got us through the southwest without having to think about campsite reservations at all. Opened up a whole new way to do our road trips. Highly recommended!

I am looking to rent for a minimum of 6 months; do you know which companies may provide the best rates for More long term ventures? I am primarily concerned with finding comfort at a low price. LOst camper appears to Ben a good option. Was wondering if you knew of any companies specifically geared towards this end.

Many campervan and RV rental companies will offer discounts for long-term rentals. I recommend reaching out to some companies and asking what discounts they can offer you for a 6+ month rental.

Anything in colorado springs?

Not entirely sure – I’d recommend doing a google search or trying Outdoorsy. There are definitely campervan rental companies elsewhere in Colorado including Denver if you aren’t able to find anything in Colorado Springs. Good luck!

Looking for a Campervan like VW, Dodge or Chevy for 2 adults & 1 baby. Pick up and return should be Los Angeles. Any reccommandations?

Would it be cheapest to rent a cargo van from Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, or some other company for a few weeks and turn it into a temporary camper?

You can always buy an inflatable mattress, manual pump, camping stove, styrofoam cooler, cheap pillow, and maybe some cheap black out material that you can tape to the windows at night.

When done, you can mail the camping stove (minus the fuel), mattress, the pump, and tape back to your residence.

Hi Rob, I think many people like the ease & luxuries that come with renting an already built-out van, but your idea is definitely a possibility. Another option to save money is to look at one-way campervan relocations – they are usually last minute and you have to find your way home, but one of our team members has traveled this way before and loved it.

It’s nice to see these resources are available, but there are none for where I live. Not much in the way for Missouri I guess, and having lived here 95% of my life so far, I can say that the landscape is beautiful here (the people not so much lol). Maybe someday there will be a van rental place available here, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

I’d recommend checking out Outdoorsy, RV Share, or Campanda since those are all rentals by owner and can be located anywhere in the US (like Airbnb for van rentals). Best of luck!

6 Reasons to Rent a Minivan for your Next Road Trip

Minivans, Wagons, or also called Station Wagons are a great way to explore the USA.

Minivans are often underrated as they are not really a traditional car yet also are not a camper. But there are many benefits to renting a Minivan and hitting the road to see some of the best destinations America has to offer.

Minivans are a very cheap way to explore the US. Minivan rentals start from $25/day – that’s right – $25/day! And even in peak season – Christmas & New Years – you are looking at a maximum of around $55/day. You will not find a rental car at such a cheap rate. It costs less than a case of beer!!! And imagine you are traveling with a group of friends and can divide the costs…it’s a real bargain.

NUMBER OF PASSENGERS

Minivans can fit up to 5 people (depending on model sometimes more) – it is very roomy and is suitable for solo travelers, a couple, a group of friends, or a family! Dividing the costs among 2 to 5 people makes renting a Minivan one of the most economical ways to explore the United States.

Minivans offer a lot of space! You can fit a large number of suitcases, bags, and other luggage into the vehicle’s back. Again – depending on how many people will be traveling – you won’t be struggling with storage space compared to a campervan.

TRANSMISSION

All Minivans are automatic, which allows for a hassle-free ride around the US. Minivans are more compact than a campervan, allowing more people to rent a minivan as not everyone is comfortable driving the larget campervans.

OVERNIGHT OPTIONS

Minivans will give you plenty of overnight options:

Minivans are suitable for families with kids from the age of 6 months (some even from the age of 1 month) plus provide plenty of space for a baby stroller in the rear.

Campervans help bridge the gap between car camping and RVing, and rentals offer an easy introduction to the lifestyle

For Harley Sitner of Peace Vans , van travel means “optimizing magic over efficiency.” His advice? “The first day is going to be a (madhouse), where you don’t know what to do or how things operate. Just stick it out. The second day gets easier, and the third gets easier yet. After the fourth night, most people are already looking for their own van.”

If you’re renting a camper van for the first time, it can all be a bit overwhelming. Luckily, there are plenty of options and resources to help you get started.

What to expect

Gas prices might be rising , but the cost of renting vans has remained relatively stable, according to April Cumming, a public relations manager at the peer-to-peer RV rental platform Outdoorsy . Many renters try to stay somewhat local, maybe going to two or three different parks over the course of their vacation, and they may not even go through an entire tank of gas on their trip.  

You can generally expect to pay between $100 and $350 per night for a van rental, which includes 100 to 150 miles per day of driving. From there, fees typically run between 25 and 50 cents per mile. Most companies also charge a cleaning fee at the end of the trip. Most companies have a 3- to 5-night rental minimum.

Be sure to look for what accessories are included. Many van rental companies include basic essentials such as pots, pans, dishes, linens, and more, but others might charge an additional fee.

If you feel overwhelmed with the number of choices, Moterra Campervan s and some other companies will prepare your entire itinerary for you (for a fee, of course). Peace Vans offers deals with several local campgrounds that reserve spots just for customers.

Where to look

Renters can choose between standard rental outfitters like Moterra or Peace Vans, or peer-to-peer rental companies like Outdoorsy, RVshare , RVezy , or Vancation . 

Specialty van rental companies like Moterra, Voyager , Peace Vans, and others have newer, fairly standard vans. Voyager builds out each of its vans while Peace Vans offers a vintage VW fleet, so you know exactly what you’re getting. If you plan a long itinerary and rent from a company with multiple locations, you can save time by flying into and out of different airports.

Peer-to-peer rental companies give you more options, allowing you to rent a van as basic or as luxurious as you need, but the service you receive from the actual RV owners can vary. Ask the rental agent or owner to walk you through the features. Don’t assume you know how everything operates, especially if it’s your first time. Pay attention, but don’t stress over knowing how every little thing works. Nearly every van rental company has robust training materials online, and Voyager even places QR codes next to the van’s most confusing buttons and gadgets, allowing you to pull up a troubleshooting article or video immediately. If you need additional help, many companies have a 24/7 hotline.

While you’re there, don’t hesitate to ask the rental agent questions, not just about your van, but also about your destination(s). Moterra’s Trevor James says most employees love sharing their favorite destinations, and the company gives lists of campgrounds and outdoor activities to every renter. 

Driving a van

If renting a van and visiting a far-off destination is on your bucket list, Cumming suggests doing a shorter trip closer to home first to get a feel for the van and how to best travel in it.

Some travelers may be intimidated by driving a large Sprinter van, especially if they’ve never driven anything that big before, but James says the nerves usually go away after the first day. Modern vans have plenty of safety features, including blindspot alerts and backup cameras, that make piloting the van a piece of cake. 

If you’re driving a tall van, consider using an RV GPS (like Roadtrippers Premium ) that will navigate you away from low bridges and tight tunnels. Likewise, avoid parking garages and drive-throughs with low barriers. When it comes to driving speed, remember that a lead foot leads to buying more unleaded gas.

Getting to the campground

If you’re new to the outdoors, stick to established campgrounds until you feel more comfortable. Campground reservations tend to go fast these days, so book as early as possible. After you gain more experience, dispersed camping in national forests and Bureau of Land Management areas are a great way to save money and experience lesser-known parks.

Most renters fret about whether to splurge on a van with a toilet or shower. If you plan to stay at an established campground, both Voyager’s Grady Linder and Vancation’s Steve Dietrich suggest forgoing both . Dietrich says some owners on Vancation will include a disposable, portable toilet in case of emergencies. For those who are venturing off-grid, a toilet may be worth the splurge.

If you’re planning to stay at a campground with hookups, make sure you can plug your RV into the 50- or 30-volt outlet. If you’re planning to forgo hookups, look for a rental option with solar panels that will help keep your devices charged.

Overnighting in a van can take some getting used to. More compact than even the tiniest hotel room, it does take some adjustment, especially if you’re traveling with family or friends, but most of the kinks are usually worked out by the second or third day. Most renters spend the bulk of their time outside, not in the van.

When? What is your draft itinerary? How old are the kids? Do you have a lot of extra money for this expensive vacation style?

Do you mean the Grand Canyon in Arizona? Too far.

How about a mix of hotels & 'other' lodgings with a rental car ? LAX - L.A. (one night) - Monterey Peninsula - SF - Yosemite NP - Sequoia NP - L.A. I think SFO would work better for this loop.

Would you still be in the US over the busy Labor Day holiday weekend?

Du you have experience with driving and camping with an RV or Campervan? And with kids that old a camper-van would be too small, you'd need an RV, which is much more expensive.

With an RV you have to book your campsites far in advance. And as August is very high season, all campground are fully booked.

Are your flights still booked? If not, it could be better and time-saving, flying in to SF and out of LA.

Swimming in the ocean, here the Pacific Ocean, would not be much fun. The water is cold, only about 20 degrees celsius around LA.

Im afraid we do not hace experience… it was one of those things w’ve always wanted To do :(

We would like To spend as Little as possible staying ay a decent place..

ReiseBeate is right in that a campervan is too small for your family. There's barely room for 2 people in a campervan, let alone 4.

August is high season, so you need to see what, if anything, in the places you want to visit have availability for your dates. Like NOW. If you can't string an RV trip together, then plan on a rental vehicle and booking hotel rooms, but those need to be booked ASAP, as well. Thousands of locals who live in the hotter areas of the state flock to the cooler coastal areas for relief, so you and the thousands of other visitors to California are competing for the few lodgings available with state residents. Our coastline is not littered with high rise hotels like you see in Florida and Hawaii, so options are limited.

Roadsurfer Camper Van: A Road Trip Companion Families Will Love

I t has long been a dream of mine to hit the road and head off into the sunset in my very own campervan. Sadly, I still don’t own one. Instead, I am relegated to renting them when I can. One of the best rental companies Los Angeles has to offer in this realm is RoadSurfer Camper Vans. 

I have tried various other companies in California and even though they all have good qualities, the number one thing that sold me on the RoadSurfer camper is their beautiful vans with no mileage limits. Often campervans have limited mileage, which means that you can’t go very far, or if you do, you then have to stay put once you have reached your destination. For me, this defeats the purpose of having a campervan as I want to explore and be able to come and go as I please without constantly worrying about mileage. 

On our recent Redwoods Road Trip up the coast of California, we put the RoadSurfer van to the test! Below is our review of the van and why your family will love this road trip companion!

What is a Roadsurfer Camper?

Roadsurfer is a German company with an extensive network of campervan rentals throughout Europe. In 2022, Roadsurfer opened its first US location in Los Angeles, bringing their much loved vibe across the pond. Their near to LAX based hub makes it super easy for both locals and out of town visitors to rent a van for their California adventure. 

And of course, we might be a bit biased, but California is one of the best locations for road tripping as you can find somewhere to go all year long! From desert escapes in Joshua Tree to a variety of beautiful California ocean getaways along the Pacific Coast Highway . 

Roadsurfer offers 2 models of camper vans in the Los Angeles location.  The Couple Condo or the Roadhouse XL. For our adventure, even though we are only 2 people and could have used the Couple Condo, we decided to check out the XL version as it is the best option for most families. 

This XL camper was still only 22 feet long making it super easy to drive and park in most places. This van is considered to be a Class B RV, but rest assured you do not need a special license to drive a Class B RV rental vehicle. 

For me, the van drove much like my regular SUV, just a bit higher off the ground. I could occasionally feel the wind a bit more than I might have in my car, but it handled the curvy roads up and down the coast like a dream. It comes with all the perks you might be used to in your own car or other rentals like a backup camera, bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and many places to charge your devices including wireless charging! 

Ins & Outs of Renting a Roadsurfer Camper

Additionally, we loved having the the ability to be flexible traveling where we wanted with no set plans. We stayed at a HipCamp spot, regular state park campgrounds as well as tried our hand at wild camping off the roadside!

Having the campervan really offered such a unique camping experience that now we are spoiled and want one even more!

Roadsurfer camper van prices fluctuate throughout the year based on the demand. Rates for the Couple Condo start at $159 per night while the Roadhouse XL starts at $169 per night. During peak summer or high demand days, you can expect to pay around $250 a night.

In addition to the nightly rate, there is a service fee of $149 charged per rental which is added to the total price.

What this includes is unlimited mileage, space for 2 (Couple Condo) or 4 (Roadhouse XL), camping gear such as table and camp chairs, and a kitchen box with cups, plates and cookware needed during your adventure.

As they are a new company still, you can often find a discount code on their website that will help reduce the cost. Definitely sign up to their newsletter so you can keep up with any specials they are running. (Right now, they have  a summer deal for both their US rentals and their European rentals).

Extras Available for Rent

There are a few extras also available for rent with your campervan hire if needed. These include bedding for each person on your trip. This includes a flat sheet, duvet and duvet cover and pillow.

Each rental comes with 2 camping chairs and a camp table to sit outside, however you can rent additional chairs and a table if needed.

Lastly, you can also hire a bike rack to add to the back of the van so that you can bring your bikes with you for the journey. 

Additional Costs Apart from Rental Fees

In addition to the cost of the van itself, it is important to know that you will incur a few other additional costs during your rental. This includes things like refilling the propane tank and emptying the dirty water and wastewater. All of these things must be done before returning your van or else you will be fined a lot more than the cost to do this on your own!

From our experience, refilling the propane can cost anywhere from $15-25 dollars depending where you go. Additionally, you will need to visit a dump station to dump the grey water tank and toilet waste. Some places are free, but more often than not you will be required to pay. This can run up to $40 per dump station. 

Rental Days & Customer Support

Currently Roadsurfer is closed on Sundays and holidays which means vans cannot be rented or returned on these days. This is important to be aware of when planning your camping holiday. 

Additionally, at the time of our rental, there was not a convenient system of customer support in place as they are still working out the kinks on being based on two continents. The station team where we picked up the van were great, but unfortunately there is no way to contact them while on the road. Instead, you are directed to email the main account. When we emailed, we received a response saying it could take several days to get back to us – which on the road, in a non-emergency, but still time variable matter, this isn’t useful. There is an emergency roadside assistance number, but for the non emergencies, there isn’t a clear way to contact people in real time.

While we did not have any problems ourselves while out on the road, in returning the vehicle we had an issue refilling the propane tank and could not get in touch with anyone to discuss what we should do. I have great hope that this will work itself out quickly as they establish their US team further. 

Let’s Look Inside a Roadsurfer Camper Van

Ok, now that we have gone through the nitty gritty of how to rent a van, how much it will cost and what extras you should budget for, we want to share the super fun bit.. the inside of the van!

What to Expect Inside a Roadsurfer Camper Van

A Roadsurfer camper van is only around 22 feet long, but they sure pack in the features. In our campervan, we had a large bed that could be folded up in the day to provide more inside space to get into the cabinets, or you could leave it folded out if you didn’t need much space or access to the things below. 

We also had a small, but functional kitchen space with a 2 burner stovetop, a mini fridge and a microwave. Across from the kitchen is the small bathroom with shower and toilet. I will admit it isn’t always pleasant to have the bathroom door closed while going to the restroom as the space is tiny, the door does close and you have space to still sit comfortably. And how amazing to not have to go outside in the middle of the night!

Across from the kitchen is a small table with a 2 seater bench. The front seats can also turn around to face and use this small table as a dining area. Since we were just two people, we often only swiveled one chair and left the driver’s seat in driving position. 

Apart from the “household” functions that we needed each day there was also a TV (which we never even turned on!) and a ton of storage. We managed to fill it up with food, pots and pans, clothes and more, but we brought a lot since we are locals and could drive it all to the rental pickup.

There is also a manual pop up roof on top that sleeps two more people. My son loved climbing up to that area to have his own personal space at camp. 

List of Amenities

There are so many amazing amenities and various features to these RV campervans. I thought I would list them out for ease with a few notes as well.

• Toilet and shower (both indoor and an outdoor shower – great for beach camping to wash off the sand)
• Mosquito nets for the back door and the side door (you can leave these on for your whole trip which makes it easy to stay bug free!)
• Magnetic and/or velcro window coverings for the night
• Electric powered sun awning 
• Manual pop-up roof sleeping area on the Road House XL van
• Off grid power supply plus hookups (we never used the hookups and never ran out of power in a week)
• Solar panels
• Tons of electrical outlets throughout the van
• Decent space in the kitchen to prep and cook meals
• Included Kitchen box (small pots/pans, mixing bowl, dishes for 4, plus plastics for kids)
• Extra rental options – Bedding, Bike rack
• Many vans come with a hitch if you have your own bike rack
• Camping table plus 2 camping chairs are also included
• Van is equipped with both air conditioners and heaters

Being Off-grid in the Roadsurfer Campervan

The water refill is super easy and we did it at the local campground using the included water storage bucket. We also emptied our waste at a campground pit toilet when we were not near to any dump stations. Being able to just pull out the ‘cassette’ and dump was super convenient. 

Note: we did not use the air conditioner during our trip as it was nice and cool out at night. If  you have electrical hookups at your campsite, you can run the AC all night long. However, if you are like us and off grid, you can use the generator for about 2 hours of cooling. 

Tips to Enhance Your RV Camper Van Trip

1. limit driving distances.

If we were to rent another Roadsurfer camper van, I think that I would not drive as far as we did in the short amount of time that we had. I wanted to maximize our time and the free mileage, but we drove way too much. It would have been better to just stay put in places longer.

2. Bring Your Own Bedding

During our trip, we rented our bedding from Roadsurfer, which was great. But to save money, I would bring our own bedding next time. While their bedding was comfortable, I could have easily just bought a queen sheet and our duvet and pillows from home to save money. If I were flying in, I would consider bringing (or buying) a fitted sheet and using our sleeping bag/quilts which fold up small.

3. Bring Lightweight Camping Chairs

During our trip, it rained almost every night so we didn’t get to utilize the included camping chairs like we had envisioned. Even though they were super comfortable, during the day they were a bit cumbersome in the back of the van. While our backpacking chairs are not as comfortable, I would probably bring my own smaller lightweight chairs and leave the bulky ones behind if given the option to save space in the van.  Again this is me, coming as a local. When flying in, you will be happy to have the included chairs!

4. Bring Kitchen Supplies

One of the things I did do and would repeat was bringing my own kitchen supplies. Obviously if you are flying from out of town, this is not a good option, but for locals who have specific pans they know and love, you might consider bringing it! While the kitchen box is quite inclusive of items you would most likely need, I am glad I brought my  large pan (which granted was probably too large for the tiny stove top) and my favorite egg pan. I also brought a cheese grater, peeler, spatula and tupperware bowls for extras. Many people may not cook as much as we did, but we were trying to save money where we could and that meant eating at “home” as much as we could. We made breakfast and dinner every day and usually made lunch in the van as well. 

5.Bring Cleaning Supplies

One of the things I was glad that we brought and that I would recommend to others is to bring a few kitchen size garbage bags . We hung ours on the side of the kitchen with our dish towels. It was so helpful to have a few of these to collect our trash and food waste every day. Additionally having a roll of paper towels and a few hand towels was great. We used them to clean up spilled water when we left a pot on the stove and took off driving (oops! lesson learned), used them to dry our hands and to clean up the kitchen as needed. Additionally, our van did not have a small hand broom . We were told they normally do come with one, but I would bring one just in case next time as we really needed it to get out the miscellaneous dirt and sand that followed us in. 

Road Trip Routes to Consider While one of the only restrictions is that you cannot take the vans to Death Valley in the summer, you are free to explore as your heart desire. Our dream route is driving up the California PCH like we did on our adventure. Another great road trip route to consider would be to the area around Zion , where there are so many cool and unusual camping spots to explore. You could also recreate our favorite Arizona-Utah road trip in the campervan. You can have so much fun researching the best places to stay or wing it until you roll up on the perfect spot!

Concluding Thoughts

We have looked at so many companies that rent campervans, but what sold us on Roadsurfer was that they allow unlimited mileage. This meant that we could plan the trip we wanted to take without worrying about extras such as daily mileage limits. We cannot wait until we can hit the road again in another Roadsurfer camper van.
