Day 1- Welcome to Iran

Upon your arrival at IKA airport, our guide will warmly welcome you and you will be transferred to your hotel. On this day, you will have the opportunity to rest and if you wish, have some leisure time to explore the beautiful city of Tehran. (depending on the time of arrival.)

Day 2- Arrival and Neor Lake Camp

Your journey commences with a direct transfer to Neor Lake , traversing the breathtaking Caspian Sea shore road. Neor Lake is nestled at the border of the majestic Alborz Mountains, approximately 48 km southeast of Ardabil city, at an elevation of 2,700 meters above sea level. Spanning over 220 hectares, the lake consists of smaller and larger basins, which merge during the rainy season to form a single expansive lake. With a maximum depth of 5.5 meters and an average depth of three meters, Neor Lake is a serene oasis amidst the rugged terrain.

Day 3- Exploring Subatan Village

All non-Iranian nationals older than 12 years, must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and present a valid vaccine certificate on arrival. The vaccination certificate must be in English, showing full vaccination of 2 doses. However, there are no obligations regarding the date of the vaccination. Or they should present a negative PCR test.

What are transportation like in this tour and what is their safety and comfort level?

Based on the group size or the road quality and the tour type, minibuses, vans or VIP buses will be used for the tour which are all private vehicles. All the vehicles are AC equipped and have the standard of EURO5 or EURO4.

What are accommodations like in this tour and what is their quality and comfort level?

Hotels are usually 4* or Traditional resorts with the same quality. Private or single rooms are not available in some traditional local houses. The basic price includes shared beds in double and twin rooms in hotels. Single rooms cost an extra fee.

Adventure through

Venture into the unknown and challenge everything you think you know about Iran. Completely misrepresented by world media, Iran is home to one of the friendliest, warmest and most welcome locals anywhere on the planet.

Social Cycles will take you on a journey to interact and connect with local grassroot Non Government Organizations (NGOs) and the beneficiaries of a funded project of your choosing. Research what really happens on the ground and out in the villages with Social Cycles in a tour that carefully balances ethical research and local impact with cycling and site seeing.

Our journey traces the magnificent legacies of the Persian Empires which will not fail to inspire, yet it is the snow clad mountains, vast deserts, oasis towns and spontaneous engagement with the locals that provide surprise at every turn. This adventure starts in the capital Tehran, slowly heading south towards Shiraz.

Features & Inclusions

Prices are based on sharing rooms, but a single room supplement can be arranged for an additional $490, however, it only applies to hotel nights.

Hamed has a heart of gold and a bend over backwards attitude towards tourists enjoying his home country. In addition, local Tehrani, Ali, will assist with all things cycling and Mr Qambadi is behind the wheel of the van.

If you’re a vegetarian, that’s no problem. There’s a huge variety of vegetarian local specialties available and there will always be vegetarian dishes on the table at every meal. Speak to Hamed if you have any concerns about any of the dishes.

You’re welcome to bring your own saddle if you’re slightly nervous about getting a bit sore, or haven’t had the chance to get a lot of saddle time before the ride. Another good option is to bring along a gel seat (cushion).  The bikes are fitted with standard pedals. Again, you’re welcome to bring clip ins should you want them. All bikes are fitted with a water cage. Bikes re fully serviced before and after every ride and we’ll have Ali, our trusty mechanic, with us at all times!

You will however, be required to bring your own helmet and water bottle(s). Feel free to bring your own saddle, gel seat, pedals or anything else from home that you would prefer to make your ride more comfortable.

The shortest day (#5) is only 25km, but it’s all uphill and not without it’s challenges, while the longest day (#8) is about anything up to 70km, but it’s all downhill (mostly). We can’t stress enough, it’s not about the distance, but the terrain and experience. We’ll stop for coffee and tea, local treats, lunch and of course, to take plenty of pictures. It is about the adventure that the slow road brings that makes travelling by bike so authentic.

We do not cycle along any highways. All routes are away from the main roads and traffic.

Alcohol is illegal. This doesn’t just apply to locals, it applies to everybody. There will be no alcohol on the Social Cycles tour. You must dress conservatively. Women must wear a hijab (head scarf) at all times when in public. Long sleeve shirts and trousers should also be worn. For men , full length shirts and trousers should also be worn in public. Cycling clothing is permitted but should be covered with loose fitted clothing over the top. Money. There is no Visa or Mastercard access from ATM’s as sanctions still limit financial access. As a result, you will need to bring in cash and exchange at the airport. The money that you bring into the country is the only money you will have access to whilst you are in Iran, so make sure you have enough for all your souvenirs!

In Tehran, we will visit Omid Foundation, who work towards empowering vulnerable young women through education and training. Hemayataz Koodak work with distressed families with young children, offering support and guidance. We are still working to increase our network of NGOs in Iran.

12 day Itinerary

Arrival day.

The concrete jungle of Tehran can seem a little daunting at first, but it doesn’t take long to get your bearings and feel right at home. We don’t have a lot of time scheduled in Iran, so we’d recommend you arrive a few days early to have a good look around. You can check out one of the many museums, mosques or markets.  Our first official activity for the evening is a welcome dinner at a ‘local’s favourite’ restaurant. This is arguably the best ‘dizi’ in Iran!

Our first NGO, ex-US embassy and Qom

We start the day with the wonderful people from Omid-e-Mehr foundation. Learn how this incredible NGO empowers local disadvantaged young women through three key areas: self empowerment, education and training. Starting in 2004, Omid-e-Mehr was set up to help victims of sexual, physical and mental abuse. Today, it has over 200 young women enrolled in it’s program. In the afternoon, we will start to make our way to Qom, the second holiest city in Iran.

Our first cycle day

We’ll take the van in the morning to get out of town into the foot of the mountains. This is where we start our first cycle day as we begin a gradual climb from 2000m to 2800m asl over the first 17km. After a bit of undulation, we finish the day at 1950m asl around the 31km mark, before getting into the van and driving to Kashan. The terrain is a mixture of sealed road (13km) and gravel (18km). We plan to arrive into Kashan in the comfort of a hotel to give you a chance to rest, relax and explore the incredible town of Kashan at your leisure.

Hammams, historical houses, ancient gardens

We’ll arrange the van to take us to Fin Gardens (about 10km out of town) for the morning, but the rest of the day is yours to explore. Kashan is a really interesting city that is rarely spoken of outside of the country, but is a common tourist destination for locals. And for good reason. The Agha Bozorg Mosque is an excellent example of 19th century architecture, the bazaar, Sultan Amir Ahmad Bathhouse and Bagh-e-Fin Garden are all easy to get camera crazy over. Of course, this is an opportunity to soak up the cultural surrounding by just taking rest.

Local villages and a 20km climb

We drive out of the traffic of Kashan and onto a quiet road, some 1400m asl. The 20km climb is broken up by exploring some of the local villages on the way. Don’t be surprised if the locals invite us in for tea, and if so, expect a feast of fruit, dates, home made sweets and of course, black tea. The day finishes at 2200m asl in the small historical village of Abyaneh. Make sure you take some time to go for a stroll and marvel at the wonderful red colours of the mud brick town.

Cycling to great heights through incredible mountains

From Abyaneh we tackle the mountain range to the West. A slow 13km climb will take us to new heights of 2800m above sea level into a land of complete remoteness and rural fascination. These are the roads less travelled, let alone cycled, and these are the roads that lead to great adventures and authentic experiences. We will arrive at a tiny village near some ancient ruins, before being picked up by the van to transit into Esfahan. It’s important to note that the majority of this ride is not supported by either vehicle as the terrain is not suitable. There is an alternate (sealed) route that riders can take that is supported.

Mosques, markets, city squares and an NGO

Esfahan is the number one tourist destination in Iran, and for good reason. Being one of the oldest cities in Iran, some 2500 years, Esfahan is famous for it’s tree lined boulevards, Life-Giving River, The Zayandeh-Rood, abundant and beautiful mosques, bazaars, bridges and city squares. Esfahan is an incredible city to explore and discover through the diverse food, cafes and teahouse’s. We will also dig a little deeper and meet another NGO, to learn a little more about the what happens beneath the surface of this friendly and welcoming community.

A 44km cycle day, with more down than up

As standard, we will drive out of the city of Esfahan to quieter roads. At a starting elevation of 2300m asl, we’ll make our way through remote outback Iran, via small villages to a small town, right in the middle of the Dena Protected Area. We’ll reach our highest elevation of 3200m asl. There are not a lot of kilometers to cycles, but don’t underestimate the challenge ahead. It’s all on sealed road, barely any traffic except for our trusty support van. We finish up in the tiny village of Sisakt, where we’ll stay in a local home, as there are no hotels.

More mountains, villages and cycling

We continue our journey on bike directly from the acommodation through the mountains for a further 30kmk to 45km, depending on how you’re feeling. The beauty of cycling out in these back end roads is that it is an opportunity to witness true Iranian hospitality. Tourists are covered with kindness and are considered by some to be ‘guests from God’. These off the beaten track roads will give us the opportunity to take our time and stroll through local villages on the way, whilst enjoying local foods and capturing that amazing photograph.

Cycling into a Persepolis sunset

Starting some 45km out in a tiny village, a relaxed cycle will take us all the way into Persepolis for a final leg on the bikes! On the way, we’ll stop off at Naqshe-e Rustam, colossal royal tombs carved in a stone cliff face. The biggest tourist attraction in all the land, Persepolis, is just a further 5km ride. This ancient empire was built in 518 BC by Darius the Great as the capital of the mighty Achaemenid Empire. Alexander the Great burnt the city to the ground in 330 BC, but many remnants of its former glory remain and Persepolis lives on as one of the greatest wonders of the ancient world. A short drive into Shiraz will take us to the hotel.

The city, the people, the monuments

We take a full day here to explore, relax and reflect on the experience over the previous couple of weeks. Shiraz is a photographers dream with highlights such as Eram Gardens, Nasir al-Mulk mosque, Vakil mosque and bazaar, Karim Khan citadel just to name a few.  Spend the day at leisure or follow Hamed and co to some of his favourite places. In the evening, the group will meet for our last local feast!

Goodbyes, a long drive via Izad Khast

Straight after breakfast, we’ll make our way towards Tehran with the van. Options are available for those who wish to spend more time in Shiraz, or make their way to Yazd. We’re happy to assist in getting you where you need to go for the remainder of your Iran experience. For those choosing to come back to Tehran, we’ll arrive around 10pm. On the way, we’ll stop for one of the greatest lunches in the tiny village of Izad Khast, home to an incredible attraction of ancient ruins and a caravanseri.

It was a typically hot July morning when I crossed the border from Armenia into Iran on my bicycle. I’d heard so many good things about cycle touring in the country but I was still nervous about my first foray into the Middle East. Iran never seemed to be on the news for anything other than bad reasons and I was unsure what awaited me in this desert land. A border guard with a thick moustache stamped me into the country and gave me a pat on the back. “Welcome to Iran!”

There are three roads to choose from at the border at Nordooz. One leads downstream towards Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea. The other is a highway into the desert. The final route is a minor road that snakes up into the dusty mountains. It is the shortest way to the city of Tabriz but involves a big climb up and over the mountains on bumpy back country roads.

The only ‘traffic jams’ to navigate were large flocks of sheep being led down the roads by shepherds. All day I sweated up hill under the burning sun until I reached the last village before the high mountain pass. I was already 2,000m above sea level and that was enough exercise for one day.

With a little sign language I asked some local guys for a place to put my tent. One of them, Ali, led me downhill and invited me to stay in his family’s home.

It was still Ramadan and the summer days were long. Despite my objections, Ali’s wife laid out food for me before darkness fell and I ate early with their daughter who was too young to fast. We all sat outside together after evening prayer and played charades over endless cups of tea. Mats were rolled out in the communal living room and we slept side by side in a room covered entirely in beautiful carpets.

It was a magical way to end my first day in the country but was by no means unusual. Everyday I was treated to the warmest hospitality in Iran. The next morning I conquered the mountain pass and soared down the far side into Tabriz.

I knew my love affair with the country had begun.

I spent one month cycling across the north of Iran that summer. By the time I left into Turkmenistan, Iran had cemented itself as one of my favourite places to ride.

The beauty of bike touring is the opportunities it offers for engaging with people in the places to you travel, and what better a place to experience that than in Iran, where the people are some of the loveliest in the world. Every single day I was given food by strangers and I was regularly invited into homes by people who welcomed me into their lives. I don’t think any other country does hospitality quite like the Iranians.

There is more to Iran than desert, however. As I cycled east the Alborz mountains loomed to my left, where there are dozens of peaks higher than 4,000m. I was amazed to discover there’s decent skiing up there and I found it hard to believe that I’d just missed the season as I plastered myself in factor 50 sun cream at the bottom of my hills.

Over on the on the other side of those mountains are the flashy resort towns lining the Caspian Sea; to the east there are vasts deserts stretching towards Afghanistan.

After Eid al-Fitr, the highlights of my day were cycling into the morning markets to load up on fruit for the ride. I suspect the highlight of the vendors’ day was serving a sunburnt Englishman wheeling a peculiar bicycle through the busy aisles. I’d fill a bag up of peaches, nectarines and cherries before heading back into the desert.

At the edges of towns, watermelon vendors would set up shop and sell giant melons for as little 5p a kilo. I often wondered if I could handle the extra weight of a huge watermelon on my bike but there was no point buying a whole one as the sellers would always flag me down and hand me slices for free.

But what made Iran a remarkable place to go cycling was not the ornate mosques, the rocky mountains or the empty desert. It was the people I got to meet and talk to as I slowly pedalled through dusty villages and hectic towns.

It’s just that special.

The Lar valley lies in the Northeast of Tehran on the western slopes of Damavand and is considered a heaven for a cycling tour to Iran. Its great biodiversity has made it one of the major national parks of Iran. It’s the habitat of many animals and plants, especially some rare and endemic species of Iran. The trail starts from the SW face of Damavand toward the north at 3000 m elevation.

By decreasing the elevation toward the west along a minor valley ending in Lar valley, the route comes alongside the Lar river. You will have to pass through the river several times. Spending two nights with nomads and exploring the Lar valley, we will return to the city after 2 days of being in Mother Earth’s wild from Garmabdar route.

Cycling is undoubtedly a lot of fun. Cycling has several advantages, whether you decide to go on it to embark on a new adventure, for health reasons, or just to take in the scenery. Additionally, you will experience twice as much delight if you decide to travel to a wonderful location like a stunning forest or a serene beach. Reconnecting with nature and letting go of care and stress can be accomplished by biking in the great outdoors. Any season is suitable for cycling in Iran; all you need to decide is when to go and which routes to take. Iran has the rare potentiality of a diversified climate that offers visitors the possibility to travel all year long in both high and low seasons due to the country’s size and extensiveness in both east-west and north-south coordinates. There are large regional differences in climate. The northwest of Iran is hilly, the north is subtropical and covered in dense woods, and the south is semiarid and tropical. Central Iran is fairly dry and desert-like.

The ideal seasons for avoiding temperature extremes across the whole nation are spring and fall. In central and southern Iran, November through April is the ideal cycling season. There is no better time of year to visit the Persian Gulf Islands than January and February. The most enjoyable riding will be found in the northwest’s cold mountain ranges throughout the summer.

There are four different seasons in the enormous nation of Iran. You may choose from a variety of riding times and routes if you are thinking of cycling in Iran. Each journey you travel may incorporate riding, historical discovery, and cultural immersion:

The lovely mountain town of Abyaneh is accessible to cyclists through the ancient Isfahan road. There are several hills just after you pass Kashan airport, despite the fact that the route doesn’t see much traffic.

Although the Abyaneh town is adjacent to the desert, which has such a diverse climate, it is situated in the mountains, where it may get cold in the spring and can get snowy in the winter. The ascent is enjoyable to the mountain settlement of Abyaneh. This route is bordered by lush meadows and a lot of trees, unlike the barren plains below. The settlement is located at 2200 m, thus the evenings are significantly colder than in Natanz. The town of Abyaneh is worth a visit and the Abyaneh Hotel has nice accommodations.

Natanz’s town center has a wide selection of stores where you can restock. Large fruit orchards may be seen outside of Natanz. The fences here might make it challenging to find a nice camping spot. Cycling is pleasant along the decent road to Murchenkort, where there isn’t much traffic. Despite the fact that several massive trucks may be constantly transporting enormous blocks from a nearby quarry. At the intersection of the very busy Highway 65 and Murchenkort. This route may be sometimes unpleasant to cycle on because it is used by hundreds of trucks.

Although there is crazy traffic in Isfahan’s city center, riding is considerably simpler once there. Trucks are seldom ever present, and vehicles move slowly due to the heavy traffic.

Cyclists can use the alternate route via Varzaneh to avoid the (likely congested) Highway 62 east to Na’an. Simply follow the park on the Zayandeh River’s south side to start. There are also some true bike paths on the route east, which makes cycling here extremely pleasant. The park comes to an end on the town’s extreme eastern edge. After a few kilometers, you may leave Isfahan city behind and travel to Ziar and Varzaneh on a rather peaceful two-lane route. Along this route that passes through an agricultural area, there are several communities. It takes some time to locate a nice camping area here.

The biggest town in this region is Varzaneh.  Camping is possible at a charming small park adjacent to the river.  Varzaneh’s northernmost section traverses a desert. There are hardly any services or communities. Once more, it is dry and dusty. There is only one lane on this route, although it doesn’t become very busy until you reach Highway 62.  From this intersection, it’s a leisurely 30 kilometers—most of them downhill—to lovely Nan. A modest tourist inn with reasonably priced split-level rooms is located in Na’n. Due to the numerous tour buses that stop there during lunch, the restaurant may get very busy.

The Na’n to Yazd route is one of those two-lane roads that are once more clogged with trucks. Thankfully, it has a shoulder the entire way. Up until you reach Aqda (70 kilometers south), which has a conventional hotel, it is entirely desert and without any facilities.  The highway drops toward Yazd fairly gradually.

Again, patience is needed while looking for a nice camping location. Small, recently-planted trees that are excellent for camping in the shadows surround several of the huge factories that line this route. The road is busy all night, so set up your tent as far from it as you can.

Due to the fact that all vehicles are routed around these cities, it is simple to cross Ardakan and Meybod thanks to their decent, broad highways and light traffic.

This is another great route while cycling in Iran. The two-lane roadway is somewhat congested with trucks and autos on its relatively small shoulders.  Taft is the following town.  On the Yazd side of the city, Taft features a hotel. Before Deshir, there is a long, slow ascent to a pass, followed by a swift, abrupt fall into the village’s few stores. Here the desert once more begins, and for the following 10 to 15 km the road continues to decline extremely slowly. There is no shoulder on this 2-lane roadway, yet it only carried a few automobiles. A store and restaurant are located 15 miles beyond Deshir. There is only a desert beyond that until Abarkuh.

It is a little town, Abarkuh. Although it appears there is a guest house, the hotel mentioned in several guidebooks has long since closed.

While exploring the diverse cycling routes in Iran, don’t miss the mesmerizing experience of Chalus Road in autumn , a scenic route that offers breathtaking views of the Alborz Mountains adorned with vivid fall colors.

About 40 miles of the moderately hilly road began the journey south of Surmaq. Although the trucks and automobiles on this important road are sometimes quite crowded, the shoulder is good. The steep ascent begins near the Red Crescent building and continues for 5 kilometers after the gradual ascent. The next 15 miles into Safashar are all downhill. Saadi Park, which has lush meadows and shaded trees, is a lovely feature of Safashar. Water for drinking and public bathrooms is available here. There is a turnoff to a preferred and much calmer route to Qaderabad 20 kilometers south of Safashar. Check your map or GPS because the turnoff is unclear or well-signposted. You may enjoy some lovely mountain views along the route as you travel the road to Qaderabad. You will return to the main roadway once again just north of the Pasargad archaeological site.

You’ll notice a “No Motorcycles” sign on the roadway farther south. This portends the approaching of a lengthy tunnel. Cycling through it is not advised, but fortunately, a great ancient road goes around it.  You will travel a few kilometers after re-joining the roadway before arriving at Sadatshar. A pleasant detour through the valley may be taken from here instead of continuing on the busy roadway. As you move closer to the Persepolis region, this ancient Shiraz road becomes more and crowded.

Would you want to go to the tombs north of Persepolis? Visitors coming from the north should turn right at the intersection just before Persepolis because these are not indicated there. At the crossroads itself are the smaller graves. One of the few locations that offer camping is the Persepolis Tourist Hotel, although you may prefer the reasonably priced bungalow-style accommodations in a lush garden.

The accommodations include a small kitchen, living area, and private bedroom. The settlement of Marvdasht is situated a few kilometers south of Persepolis. After passing it, continue on Highway 65 all the way toward Shiraz. It becomes more crowded as you approach closer to Shiraz. There is a decent shoulder where you may ride while admiring the stunning surroundings.

Cycling in Lavasanat

Tehran’s Lavasanat area is located 40 kilometers outside of the city. It is about 40 minutes away by car on a mountain route and is situated in the Central Alborz Mountains northeast of Tehran. The district of Lavasanat has the major town of Lavasan, which is today a rich neighborhood where residents prefer to live outside the city. With a population of more than 15 million, Tehran is a sizable capital city, thus many residents who can afford to do so opt to live elsewhere and travel to work.

In the past ten years, Lavasan, a rural and mountainous area of Tehran, has experienced rapid growth. There are various paths around the town of Lavasan that lead to a collection of villages. A dam and a small lake are nearby, and the summer is the best time to see them while cycling in Iran.

The ideal cycling months of the Lavasanat region are early spring to mid-autumn. However, there are no hotels seen nearby, but there are a few residents in the region who provide local homestays, fortunately.

Cycling from Tehran to the Caspian Sea

The Alborz Mountains with a length of 900 km serve as a barrier between central Iran and the Caspian Sea, meaning you must travel through the range from the southern slopes to the northern ones in order to get to the Caspian Sea, which makes the trip of cycling in Iran a bit more adventurous. The distance from Tehran to the Caspian Sea, which appears to be roughly 90 km in a straight line on the map, isn’t as large as it appears to be on the road. There are a variety of routes you can take to go from Tehran to the Caspian Sea if there isn’t an official bike path.

Cycling ranges from a moderate level to a tough Iran cycling adventure level, depending on when you choose to start your ride. To have a unique experience, you must spend a few nights traveling. You need a support truck for every route since each segment requires a few transfers. This route has three distinct seasons: spring, summer, and fall. You can encounter rain in the early spring and the end of the fall.  You must be ready for the unpredictable weather.

Is Iran secure ? The most frequent query bikers have is this one. Contrary to what the Western media would have you believe, Persians are among the world’s friendliest and most hospitable people. Locals are aware of how they are seen in Western media, but instead of being offended by it, they repeatedly disprove the stereotype with their overwhelmingly warm friendliness and compassion. Driving and traffic patterns are a hybrid of those in Asia and Europe. Sometimes it feels risky to cross the street, so do as the natives do. Start your bicycle journey on rural (and occasionally gravel/dirt roads) after leaving the larger cities and traveling to calm towns. According to the route they take, many people think cycling in Iran is much safer than cycling in Australia . Bicyclists should wear high-visibility clothing, and have reflectors and light because certain routes won’t be illuminated. The most effective way to see cars passing you is in your rearview mirror.

If you want to cover a large area, the distance forces you to take public transportation with your bike. It is feasible, but you will have to pay more, and it will depend on how long the trip will take and what kind of bus it will be. You must arrive at the railway station early to check your bike in as cargo if you intend to ride a cargo bike on the train.

Iran provides travelers with a selection of lodging choices, including five-star hotels, boutique hotels, hostels, homestays, and caravansaria. There aren’t many conventional campgrounds in Iran with hot showers and kitchens for cyclist visitors who enjoy camping. You will instead rely on rough camping in the spaces between towns and cities. There are many isolated locations where you may set up your tent, so this is never an issue.

In Iran, it is simple to camp next to the police stations, gas stations, and Red Crescent Rescue Stations that are dispersed along the major roadways. They normally welcome you to set up tent close by and will let you use their water and restrooms. You can even set up camp in municipal parks, where a guard is typically stationed inside a small house and on watch.

Generally, Iranians are caring and feel responsible for being by your side. When cycling in Iran, locals will pull over to offer you food and drinks, and invite you to their homes.

Some misconceptions about cycling in Iran may be that it’s impossible to escape Iran’s busy highways, most of Iran is a featureless desert, Iran’s climate is always hot and dry and Iranians are scary and hostile towards Americans and British citizens.
